HOURS OF OPERATION
Roundhouse Vision & Mission
In September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood representatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions: The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECT
All of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASIS
The Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, transforming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTION
The Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partnerships, and our own productions.

President's message
WElcome Having assumed the position of President of the Roundhouse Community Arts and Rec-
reation Society, I would like to acknowledge all the hard work and professionalism of past president, Dr.V.Setty Pendakur. He has dedicated many years to leading the Association and has contributed significantly to the growth and development of this centre. Dr. Pendakur has played a major role in consulting and advising staff and volunteers in the progress of this unique Arts and Recreation Community Centre, which has led it to be named, for the third year running, the best community centre in Vancouver. Dr. V. Setty Pendakur is a hard act to follow. There are many programs and activities that should appeal to all age groups, backgrounds and interests. Programs that, we hope, will help and improve, not only physical health but mental stimulation and well-being. We are working on expanding our children’s art programs as well as offering a variety of different afterschool and weekend programming for the coming seasons. Our arts programmers are working with artists in three underutilized park field houses (Hadden Park, Slocan Park and Burrard Marina) as part of the Park Board initiative to engage community members in creative community building as part of our everyday lives. Major events occurred at the Roundhouse during the summer period. We finally completed the renovation of the outdoor Turntable Plaza and are looking forward to exciting and innovative programming that could take place on this site, which should appeal to all members of the community. Our new Community Recreation Supervisor, Daisy Chin, with her many years of experience, has taken up the challenge of leading an extremely efficient and capable staff in providing a fulfilling and enjoyable environment at the Roundhouse. In addition, under the capable and friendly coordination of Michele Mateus, a host of enthusiastic volunteers help to enhance the centre and its programs. Over the coming season, we hope to continue to seek your advice and suggestions as we proceed to improve our services and facilities for you. The Roundhouse is your Community Arts and Recreation Centre, and it is a privilege to be part of the team that makes it happen. Michael Noon President, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Association
Best Community Centre — three years in a row! For the third year in a row (2010 -2012), the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre was voted Best Community Centre in the Georgia Straight's annual Best of Vancouver issue. Thank you to all the patrons, staff, instructors, and volunteers who make the Roundhouse the unique and special place it is.

COMMUNITY-BASED YOUTH WORK AT THE ROUNDHOUSE Our philosophy is based on offering universal access programs, activities and drop-ins for youth while paying special attention to marginalized youth. This mix has proven to be a good fit for this neighborhood. The Roundhouse believes in providing a child- and youth-friendly community environment. Many of our youth programs are subsidized, free or low-cost. These programs are primarily staffed by qualified youth workers and community artists. Youth work differs from other leisure-time opportunities because of its specific intention to create a setting in which young people can learn and develop. The aim of youth work is to encourage young people to understand and act on the personal, social, intellectual, political, moral, emotional and physical issues which affect their lives, the lives of others, and the community of which they are a part. Our youth programs range from recreation-based free drop-ins/open gym (Thursday, Friday) to arts programs (Hip Hop culture program) to programs targeting marginalized youth (Street Youth Arts Drop-in, sports activities for youth with concurrent disorders—partnership program with VCH etc.). We also offer low-cost programs such as skateboarding and skimboarding and special events for youth. Youth have input into the program design, as do our partners and other community stakeholders. Our programs change to reflect the interest of youth. New ideas are always welcome. Check our Facebook page Youth @ Roundhouse for updates on current programs and events. The youth work team is looking forward to meeting you. Artists' Residencies
Artist Field House Residencies A Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation Artist-in-Residence Project
Ongoing at Vancouver parks around Vancouver www.vancouver.ca
In the fall of 2012, The Park Board Office of Arts, Culture and Environment announced a new project to transform underutilized field houses in city parks into studio space for artists engaged in community-based arts practices. This project supports artists who create work in the heart of communities, developing community-based projects that engage with neighbourhoods and surrounding parks, and connecting with other artists to grow this form of participatory arts. More than 30 artists are in field houses at Elm, Falaise, Hadden, Strathcona, Slocan, Memorial South parks and the Burrard Marina. The Roundhouse will be working with artists and arts collectives in 3 field houses: Burrard Marina Field House The Contemporary Art Gallery welcomes Raymond Boisjoly to the Burrard Marina fieldhouse. A Vancouver based Aboriginal artist of Haida and Québécois descent, Boisjoly thinks about the places where history, technology, and cultural practices meet; he combines contemporary craft, pop references and street art with traditional Northwest Coast imagery to explore ideas of ‘Aboriginality’. www.contemporaryartgallery.ca Hadden Park Field House Artists Rebecca Bayer, Justine A Chambers, Josh Hite, Billy Marchenski and Kristen Roos will collaborate with the community on interdisciplinary works exploring relationships between local histories and forms of mapping through sound, collective recordings, temporary installations, performances, screenings, workshops, conversations and dinners. www.tenfifteenmaple.org Slocan Park Field House The Art House In The Field Collective joins Renfrew/Collingwood-based arts groups to build community through cultural, artistic and inclusive experiences. Some art will include; lantern art; felting; visual art classes; costume design; music; photography; displays; carving and more.

Art in Wild New Territories Stanley Park January – April
Coal Harbour seawall into Stanley Park www.vancouver.ca
Wild New Territories is an extraordinary public art exhibition that explores the relationship between the urban and the wild. Between January and April, work by internationally renowned artists will be exhibited outdoors along the Coal Harbour seawall and into Stanley Park. The exhibition looks at the complex interconnectedness of living things, linking cultural and environmental ecologies and questioning our assumptions about wild spaces in urban environments. Locating art in some of the world’s most creative urban natural habitats, this exhibition enters “wild new territories,” both physically and metaphorically, generating new ideas about culture and nature. Curated by Vancouver artists Kathy Kenny and Ron den Daas, the exhibition will occupy gallery spaces as well as outdoor spaces in restored or protected wild lands in London, Berlin and Vancouver. Artwork will be exhibited outdoors all along the seawall and in the park, and in addition Coal Harbour Community Centre is pleased to host work by Canadian First Nations artist Dana Claxton on the outside of their building, and a video work by Vancouver artist Glenn Lewis in their lobby. Watch for programs and performances at Coal harbor Community Centre and in the Stanley Park Ecology Society pavilion as well. Presentation partners include: Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, Simon Fraser University Tek Gallery, and Stanley Park Ecology Society.

VOLUNTEER AT THE Roundhouse Volunteers at the Roundhouse are an essential part of our thriving community. Without the endless hours of volunteer service offered to the Roundhouse by our community members, we would not be able to do the wonderful work that we do. Volunteers contribute to our programs, special events, board and committees, and to various environmental and cultural events. Currently, over 150 volunteers continue to give their time and commitment to the Roundhouse, and these volunteers are as varied as the programs we offer. From Engine 374 to pottery studio volunteers, volunteers play an active role at the Roundhouse, and we truly could not do the work we do without their support.

Profile: BARB PESNER Barb Pesner has been volunteering at the Roundhouse since 2009. “The Roundhouse attracted me because it is a community-based organization and as I get older I appreciate the value of bringing people together and creating a community spirit,” says Barb. Barb told us that she actually feels like she is receiving more from volunteering than she is giving. “At times I feel it’s a real privilege to be part of the volunteer group. I can’t leave out the benefits of volunteering – snack card, free membership and discounts to Roundhouse programs as well as an evening of appreciation – catered with entertainment – lots of fun and nice to reconnect with volunteers and meet others. Volunteers are very much appreciated and this appreciation is gratefully expressed.” We are so lucky to have such wonderful volunteers like Barb here at the Roundhouse.
