ACADEMICS: TRULY GREAT LEARNING NEVER HITS A CEILING 12. PARENT GIVING Dear RCDS Community, I am consistently and thoroughly impressed by the dedication of the parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends of The Rumson Country Day School, and that commitment to our School is evident throughout the pages of this 2020-2021 Annual Report. We are grateful that our parent participation was a robust 86% and that we set a new standard for Annual Giving at RCDS this past year. We reached these milestones due to both long-time, loyal RCDS donors and to new families, parents, and friends, who joined our Annual Giving campaign at a remarkable rate. Thanks to every member of our community, we met and exceeded all of our fundraising goals. Of course, our school year was a success in countless other ways as well. While we began the year uncertain about what school might look like and encountered some challenges along the way, we ended the year with a wonderful, celebratory Class Day, followed by an in-person commencement ceremony, where we were joined by parents, grandparents, and family members. Along the way, many other beloved traditions returned, including class plays, Model United Nations, various class trips, interscholastic athletic contests, and others. The reintroduction of these activities and customs led to a greater sense of normality as the year progressed and allowed us to begin the current school year with even more optimism and excitement than usual. These accomplishments would be impossible without each of you. I am deeply appreciative of your support. Thank you. Respectfully,

SOURCES OF REVENUE

Nikki Alpert Secretary Todd Whitenack Treasurer Dear RCDS Community, As I think about the unpredictable journey that all of us have been on since March of 2020, I am inspired by the strength and commitment of our community. Through this entire pandemic, consistent leadership, communication, and solidarity have persevered. With its community joined together, and with Carson Smith at the helm, The Rumson Country Day School has navigated unthinkable challenges and built upon a legacy of excellence in education that continues to grow. While most schools in our area were teaching students online, we were able to safely stay in school 158 out of 167 possible days. Each of these days, students were smiling and running into school because, even through a pandemic, our dedicated faculty created a warm, nurturing, and fun learning environment. RCDS continued to fulfill its mission to deliver a premiere academic program, inspire lifelong learning, and nourish character and critical life skills. I have watched my daughters blossom throughout their years at RCDS and feel fortunate to have found a school built on a mission and pillars that are in line with our family values. Since the School’s inception, the generous support of our faculty, staff, parents, past parents, grandparents, alumni, trustees, and former trustees has made the RCDS mission possible. Thanks to you, the 2020-21 Annual Campaign raised more than any in recent history. I invite you to take a moment to reflect upon all that we accomplished together. Thank you for your continued support of RCDS, for making our successes possible, and for continuing to foster a community that I am proud to be a part of. Sincerely, Kristen Masserio, P’21, ’24, ’27 Board of Trustees President 4

Dear RCDS Community, The 2020-2021 school year mirrored much of how we ended 2019-2020. We continued to navigate our “new normal” and had great success keeping the School open and operating. We invested heavily in mechanical upgrades to improve the building’s air quality. We also expanded our custodial staff to keep up with new cleaning protocols. The Rumson Country Day School continues to operate within a sound financial structure. The Board of Trustees and the Finance Committee are judicious in their budget governance, continuing to ensure the School’s fiscal health and long-term prosperity. On behalf of the faculty, staff, and trustees, thank you for your partnership. Michael J. Mannino Director of Finance and Operations

ENDOWMENT Valued at $16,111,318 as of June 30, 2021, the Rumson Country Day School’s endowment is an investment in the future that is intended to ensure the School can continue to pursue its mission in perpetuity with palpable momentum and a remarkable trajectory forward.

THE IMPACT OF ANNUAL GIVING & “THE GAP”

Because RCDS is a relatively small community, we have fewer supporters to ask for contributions. This makes every gift we receive from our alumni families, grandparents, parents, staff, and faculty that much more meaningful and impactful to the School. Your gift to Annual Giving — the School’s most important fundraising priority — is necessary because each year there is a “gap” between the cost of tuition and the true cost of an RCDS education. In FY 2020-21, the “gap” amount we needed to raise per student was $5,650. Your contribution to Annual Giving supports every aspect of our students’ lives — from early childhood education through graduation day and future endeavors. THE CLASS OF

MAKES ITS

Few classes have had to withstand the kind of challenges that the graduating Class of 2021 has. On Friday, June 11, The Rumson Country Day School celebrated 46 resilient graduates with a commencement ceremony—one of the first opportunities for parents and friends to gather as a community in-person on campus since the start of the pandemic.

6

Guided by The Four Pillars and the unwavering sense of community that is unique to RCDS, the Class of 2021 embraced the extraordinary circumstances of the school year

with grace and tenacity. They naturally accepted their role as leaders of the school. They set an example for younger students through their commitment in the classroom, their determination on the athletic field, their confidence on stage, and their manners in the halls, all while smiling behind their masks. These demonstrations of leadership are the mark of an RCDS graduate and a reason why they stand out in the community and succeed at some of the most selective high schools and colleges in the country.

We have grown to be kind, honest, responsible, and respectful. As we begin the next chapter in our lives we will carry these virtues with us and will always hold our memories of the brownstone church on the corner.” — Emma Alpert ’21

Project-Based Learning: Inspire Curiosity & Problem Solving

Fourth graders apply math lessons in measurement, data collection, converting, and problem solving to create, test, and fly paper airplanes.

Sixth graders participate in the egg drop experiment—a popular STEAM activity that allows students to explore the concepts of mass and gravity by designing a system to protect an egg from a high fall.

It might take a student three, four, or five tries to get it right. That can be frustrating, but we work through it. The process instills persistence. Students learn how to assess what’s working, what’s not working, and how to make improvements to better their idea. The bigger lesson is sticking with your idea until you get it right.” — Jennifer Grolemund, LS Science Teacher

The adage, ‘The Show Must Go On(line)’ has never been more true! When life throws you challenges, you must adapt, change, and thrive as a community. For decades, Lower School class plays have been a source of creativity, engagement, and community building. We were lucky to reinvent one of our cornerstones to continue its existence amidst some of the most challenging circumstances. Sometimes difficult times can provide some of our most cherished moments.” First graders create beautiful prints on paper using shaving cream and vibrant watercolors while learning all about viscosity, color mixing, and marbling.

Athletics: Student-Athletes Win On & Off the Field Eighth grade athletes celebrate their last year in Gator green before they head off to play high school sports.

Spring sports season is a home run for RCDS Gators!

I just want our students to say, ‘I got a chance to play. This was great. This was pretty special.’” — Paul Campanella, RCDS Athletic Director

Jumping for joy because RCDS’s no-cut policy creates an inclusive environment where students with varying degrees of athletic talent can all succeed. 17

Service Learning: Guided by The Four Pillars Students create new, meaningful ways to connect with and serve local organizations we love.

Seventh and eighth graders present a story time series with our friends at the Harbor School Special Needs School in Eatontown via Zoom.

Of course it’s important to provide our community with things they need, but building empathy in our students is also important. That’s our job – to grow good people. When you think about others instead of yourself, you become a more fulfilled person. That is a soft skill that is essential to having success no matter what you grow up to be.” — Amy Clark, RCDS Service Learning Coordinator

The RCDS community continues to lead the fight against hunger in Monmouth County, contributing the most rice and beans to the Red Bank Crop Walk for nearly 40 years. 19

Your Gifts at Work Signature Traditions: Strengthen Community & Create Lasting Memories

Sporting green and white, Beginners through fourth grade participate in reimagined field day for some friendly competition, dancing, and a whole lot of fun.

Students ventured off campus for class trips to places like Thompson Park, Camp Ockanickon, and Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, offering additional opportunities for experiential learning and class bonding.

RCDS traditions end up being the moments that students remember and look forward to most. When they come back to visit, they talk about the plays they were in, the trips they took, and the special events they experienced. These moments allow for success outside of the classroom. They give students an opportunity to shine in new ways, bond with their classmates, and create memories.” — Tom Scott, Upper School Teacher

Eighth graders are all smiles as they return to the historic Dining Room to share a meal for the first time in many months. 21

SAYING GOODBYE TO GINGER KOLB: PLANT A SEED, GROW A LEGACY RCDS’s beloved Beginners teacher, Mrs. Ginger Kolb, is a gardener, both literally and metaphorically. For 45 years she nurtured the mind of every child she encountered at RCDS, empowering them to grow and flourish just like her plants in the School garden. On Friday, June 11, at Class Day, Mrs. Kolb was presented with a plaque officially dedicating the original Beginners wing of the School in honor of the incredible dedication and spirit that she has given to RCDS and her students. To further celebrate her retirement, the RCDS community raised $18,200 in her honor and gifted her with a memory book filled with photos and personal notes from those whom she touched. “RCDS has always been this nurturing environment that, for me personally gave me a sense of belonging,” said Jesse Spector ’95, a current RCDS parent. “How do we create that

environment? What are the elements of that? It’s our faculty, our staff, our history, our campus, our academic programs, our sports...but to me, Mrs. Kolb embodies the spirit that makes our school so special. So much so that now, 35 years after I’ve finished Beginners, whenever I see her I still feel that spirit.”

FROM THE PARENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT While the 2020-2021 school year started to look a little more familiar with the return of in-person learning and modified extracurricular activities and Parent Council events, the year continued to throw us some curve balls. Despite these challenges, our community rallied together to keep our children safe while honoring the curriculum and traditions that make our school such a special place. Parent Council again had to forego the planning of our large-scale celebratory events like Gator Bash, Casino Night, and Whale of a Sale, and concentrate on events that we could safely stage. Our calendar was composed of virtual cooking sessions and exercise classes, outdoor play events, food and coat drives, and faculty and staff appreciation days. While the scope and size of these events were ever-changing, there were many constants. The positive attitude of our faculty and staff, the willing and animated participation of our parent population, and the resiliency of our students constantly reminded us that our vibrant and committed community was intact and thriving. With each passing hurdle that our little school overcomes, I am reminded of how lucky I am to be a part of a community that is so focused on the well-being of our children. Thank you to our committed Board of Trustees, our inspiring faculty and staff, our generous parent population, and especially, our impressive children. I am so grateful to be a Gator! LEGACY SOCIETY The Legacy Society honors those supporters who have designated a portion of their assets in their will or through their estate planning to benefit The Rumson Country Day School. Individuals who include the School in their estate plans become members of The Rumson Country Day School Legacy Society. All names are recognized in our annual Philanthropy Report. You can have a lasting impact on the people and organization that mean so much to you! One of the easiest gifts you can make is to name The Rumson Country Day School as a beneficiary of one of your assets, such as your retirement plan or life insurance policy. Below is an example of the language you may use in your will. I give, devise, and bequeath to The Rumson Country Day School, a not-for-profit organization located in Rumson, NJ, $ or percent (%) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate as an unrestricted gift to be used at the discretion of the Board of Directors of The Rumson Country Day School to help the School continue its long standing tradition of educational programming designed to nurture the entire child. GIFTS TO THE ENDOWMENT The Rumson Country Day School’s Endowment Funds can be compared to an individual’s savings account and investments. A strong endowment endeavors to provide a permanent source of annual revenue providing support for teachers, students, and programs. Continuing to grow our endowment affords RCDS the opportunity to both plan and fulfill strategic, long-term decisions on a solid financial foundation. Above all, perhaps, endowment means long-term security, protecting the School’s quality if enrollments temporarily decline or the economy hits a rough spot. Mr. David Haven Blake ’53
