LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear RCDS Community,

As we reflect on the extraordinary moments of the 2022-23 school year, we are filled with gratitude for the unwavering support of our remarkable community. The achievements of our students in the classroom, the echoes of applause in our auditorium, the enriching off-campus excursions, the shared meals fostering bonds in our historic Dining Room, the visual and performing artistic marvels at the Arts Festival, the resounding cheers at athletic contests – all these moments were made possible by the collective strength of all of you, who sustain our beloved School.

We are honored to share with you the 2022-2023 Annual Philanthropy Report, a testament to the immeasurable impact of your generosity. The success of the ’22-’23 Annual Giving Campaign underscores the spirit of giving that defines our community. With 485 donors contributing a total of $879,812, we exceeded our goals for the fiscal year. Your support enabled us to deliver unparalleled programming and experiences, to the benefit of all of our students.

To our faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, past parents, alumni, trustees, former trustees, and friends – thank you. Your commitment to The Rumson Country Day School is felt in every accomplishment, every smile, and every shared moment. I am always impressed by and grateful for your loyalty to RCDS, and your generosity has made a lasting impact on the lives of our students and our School.

As we express our deepest gratitude, we look forward to the continued journey ahead, guided by the spirit of giving that defines The Rumson Country Day School.

Respectfully,

CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2023

It was a beautiful, sunny day on Friday, June 9, when RCDS’s Class of 2023 accepted their diplomas. Faculty, family, and friends gathered on the athletic fields to celebrate the forty-one graduates who sported traditional RCDS commencement attire - white gowns, white slacks, and navy blazers. Commencement speaker and long-time RCDS pre-k teacher Lucy Bogdon shared words of wisdom with the graduates, some of which she taught when they were four years old. Keeping with RCDS tradition several graduates were honored with awards to acknowledge their achievements.

RCDS FINANCIALS

Dear RCDS Community,

The 2022-2023 school year marked a significant milestone as it was our first full “normal” school year without the constraints of pandemic-related restrictions. As we reflect on the conclusion of the fiscal year, I would like to express our gratitude for the support we have received from our dedicated donors. Despite facing challenges posed by rising interest rates, your generosity played a pivotal role in navigating these financial hurdles and ensuring the seamless operation of The Rumson Country Day School. I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to our Board of Trustees and the Finance Committee for their invaluable aid and expertise which has contributed to maintaining a sound financial structure for the School and secured the current and long-term fiscal health of RCDS. On behalf of the faculty, staff, and trustees, thank you for your partnership.

OF ANNUAL GIVING

Like all independent schools, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of a Rumson Country Day School education. Voluntary giving from the entire Gator community ensures our school is fully funded, allowing you to make a 100% charitable tax deduction for your investment in your child’s education.

Annual Giving impacts every part of the student experience at RCDS. Small classes, phenomenal faculty, and Signature Traditions like Family Style Dining are all made possible by voluntary gifts that supplement tuition and fees. Like many independent schools, Annual Giving covers a percentage of annual operating expenses, which helps keep tuition lower than it might otherwise be. Your participation signifies your belief in RCDS’s commitment to providing a formative education that sets students up for a lifetime of success. We are grateful for every contribution.

Participating in Annual Giving is the most meaningful way to support the school and the people who make a difference in our students’ lives each day.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES PRESIDENT

Dear RCDS Community,

On behalf of The Rumson Country Day School’s Board of Trustees, I am writing to express our gratitude for your generous support during the ’22-’23 fiscal year. Your commitment to our school reinforces the belief that education is a cornerstone of a brighter future, and your contributions empower us to provide an enriching educational experience for every student. It is with great appreciation that we acknowledge the impact you’ve made on the vibrant community we have cultivated at RCDS.

RCDS holds a special place in my heart, not only as the President of the Board of Trustees but also as a parent who has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education within its halls. The dedication of our teachers, the enthusiasm of our students, and the sense of camaraderie among parents create an environment that fosters growth, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Your support plays a pivotal role in ensuring that RCDS continues to thrive as a nurturing and inspiring educational institution. The funds you have generously provided contribute to maintaining the exceptional standards of our programs, enhancing our facilities, and offering invaluable opportunities for our students. It is through the collective effort of individuals like you that RCDS can fulfill its mission.

Once again, thank you for your invaluable support. We are truly blessed to have individuals like you who share our vision and are dedicated to the success of RCDS. Your generosity strengthens the foundation upon which our school stands, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.

Set the Stage: THE RCDS AUDITORIUM

The RCDS auditorium is a crucial space in the School that serves every member of our community. Students from nursery through grade 8, parents, faculty, and guests gather there for assemblies, class plays, award ceremonies, band performances, academic competitions, professional development, guest speaker events, and more. Everyone at RCDS has the opportunity to assume a role on the auditorium stage and in the spring of 2023 we asked you to play your part in helping us elevate the space so that we could set the stage for success.

Thanks to our generous donors we raised a total of $73,825 which allowed us to create a back-of-house sound and lighting booth, enhance the sound equipment with added microphones and technology, install a new AV projector and screen, purchase a new electronic piano, and replace all the theater curtains.

One of the greatest things about RCDS is that we are a family, so to have that shared space where we can be one community supporting our students, our teachers, and the mission of the School is so important.”

FROM THE PARENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT

A heartfelt message of gratitude to all of our parents who volunteer their time, talents and efforts to support the RCDS Parent Council. Whether acting as a class parent, chair or co-chair of an event, or committee member and volunteer, it truly takes a village, and we are very lucky to have you a part of ours.

The 2022-2023 school year kicked off with lots of hope, and smiles, as we returned to school with the mask mandate lifted. Our second annual sports outing, Gator Cup, was yet again another huge success and brought the entire parent community together for a fun day of golf, tennis, and paddle at Navesink Country Club. In November, we hosted the second annual Chili Cook-Off, one of the most favorited family-friendly, free events amongst our community. Some of our faculty members even participated in the friendly competition, creating more excitement for our children! In December, Riker Hall was filled with amazing new book titles during our Scholastic’s Book Fair. The halls were beaming with joy, spirit, and enthusiasm from the entire community, but especially from our children. In January, we hosted Parent Council’s largest “friendraiser” with a high stakes Casino Royale-themed Gator Bash. An unforgettable evening, Blake Gymnasium was transformed into an eye-popping casino, complete with real gaming tables and dealers!

In April, the school’s time-honored tradition Whale of a Sale, popularly known as Rummage, returned from a pandemic hiatus and proved to be a record-breaking success! The entire parent body and many of the students, faculty, administration, staff, alumni, and friends worked together to collect, sort, and display a collection of items – from unique treasures to household necessities – in Blake Gymnasium. A truly special time in the RCDS calendar, the entire school community came together, rolled up its collective sleeves, got down to work, and made this tremendous undertaking a success for everyone it touched: the families who rely on financial aid, thousands of neighbors who depend on the affordable shopping opportunity, and local charities where unsold items from the sale were donated. A true group effort embedded with tradition that dates all the way back to 1926!

Parent Council also hosted Welcome Back and Holiday Breakfasts for our beloved Faculty & Staff, as well as a full week of Appreciation events in the spring to support and champion their hard work and dedication. Our Kindness Committee also coordinated numerous “Gators Give Back” initiatives throughout the year; Chalk the Walk, Thanksgiving meals to Horizon families, Holiday Giving Tree, LEGO Drive, and Clean Ocean Action Beach Clean-ups, are just a few examples of the generosity and community service in our amazing little school. Parent Council then sent the children off for a fun-filled summer with a surprise visit from the ice cream truck, applauding them for yet another, spectacular year at RCDS.

Thank you to our committed Board of Trustees, our inspiring faculty and staff, our generous parent population, and especially, our impressive children. I am so grateful to be a Gator!

The Four Pillars of our school — Kind, Honest, Responsible, and Respectful — were on full display. The impact that Rummage has on local families, our students, and the camaraderie between members of our community lasts far beyond sale weekend. Leading the charge of the revival of this time-honored tradition has been one of my proudest volunteer moments.”

I watched students push themselves to new levels. At the ropes course, I saw students step up as leaders and guide their peers. On the hike, I saw students persevere through feelings of doubt and exhaustion. While they were required to work physically to overcome these challenges, the mental growth they experienced set the foundation for success in their eighth-grade year and beyond.”

Our role is to help students learn to become creative, collaborative, and critical thinkers.”

—Director of Library, Research & Media Learning, Lisa Fallon

Literature and language arts are two distinct classes in Upper School. We are fortunate to be able to separate the two because there is just so much to interpret in Literature. Likewise, it’s important to have a class just for the grammatical and mechanical aspects of English. The fact that we have time dedicated just to the mechanics of writing and the synthesis of reading, and students are able to put them together…it’s a fabulous aspect of RCDS that is just a pleasure.”

LEGACY SOCIETY

The Legacy Society honors those supporters who have designated a portion of their assets in their will or through their estate planning to benefit The Rumson Country Day School. Individuals who include the School in their estate plans become members of The Rumson Country Day School Legacy Society. All names are recognized in our annual Philanthropy Report. You can have a lasting impact on the people and organization that mean so much to you! One of the easiest gifts you can make is to name The Rumson Country Day School as a beneficiary of one of your assets, such as your retirement plan or life insurance policy.

Below is an example of the language you may use in your will.

I give, devise, and bequeath to The Rumson Country Day School, a not-for-profit organization located in Rumson, NJ, $ or percent (%) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate as an unrestricted gift to be used at the discretion of the Board of Directors of The Rumson Country Day School to help the School continue its long standing tradition of educational programming designed to nurture the entire child.

StoneX Voya Investment Management

The Rumson Country Day School’s Endowment Funds can be compared to an individual’s savings account and investments. A strong endowment endeavors to provide a permanent source of annual revenue providing support for teachers, students, and programs. Continuing to grow our endowment affords RCDS the opportunity to both plan and fulfill strategic, long-term decisions on a solid financial foundation. Above all, perhaps, endowment means long-term security, protecting the School’s quality if enrollments temporarily decline or the economy hits a rough spot.
