Hudson Valley Honor Flight seeks local veterans Hudson Valley Honor Flight is seeking veterans for its two spring flights taking place on Saturday, May 2 and Saturday, May 30. The May 2 flight will depart from New York Stewart International Airport and the May 30 flight will depart from Westchester County Airport. Flights take veterans on an all-expenses paid trip to visit our nation’s war memorials in Washington D.C. Veterans will travel in comfort and safety aboard a fleet of chartered deluxe buses while in D.C. for the daylong tour and fly back to New York

that evening. All area World War II, Korean War, Cold War and Vietnam veterans from the following counties who have not previously taken part in a Hudson Valley Honor Flight are eligible to participate: Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, Westchester, Rockland, Sullivan, Putnam, Pike, Pennsylvania, Bergen, New Jersey, and Fairfield, Connecticut. In addition, veterans who served in the time between World War II and the Korean War are eligible to participate. Currently, Vietnam veteran applicants will be placed on a waiting list. Ap-

plications can be found online at hvhonorflight.com. “We are looking forward to a busy spring of honoring our American heroes and excited to fill seats for both of our upcoming flights,” Chairman Frank Kimler said. “We’re seeking veterans to join us for a wonderful day of honor, reflection, thanks, lots of laughs and maybe a few surprises along the way. With ShopRite’s generous support, we are hoping to fill every seat of these two planes and are currently planning our itinerary.” Hudson Valley Honor Flight, HVHF, is a local nonprofit based

in Walden which honors Hudson Valley area veterans for all their sacrifices by bringing them to Washington, D.C. to visit their respective war memorials at no cost to them. HVHF is also the local hub of the National Honor Flight Network, which has more than 100 independent non-profit “hubs” nationwide. HVHF is currently seeking sponsorship for future missions, as there are many worthy and eligible veterans and HVHF wants to continue honoring them. Furthering the county’s mission to provide comprehensive legal and social services to families struggling with child welfare issues, the Westchester County Department of Social Services, DSS, will partner with Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, LSHV, to create the Family Defense Unit, FDU. The New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services issued a $2.61 million grant to the county for this three-year project. This model unit, to be based in LSHV’s White Plains office, will also serve families in Yonkers and other communities as needed and will be staffed with attorneys, social workers and parent advocates who will provide assistance to families with child protective and family court matters. Families will also have access to a range of other LSHV legal support to address loss of health insurance and other benefits, eviction, homelessness, consumer debt and domestic violence. Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “Our Department of Social Services, along with the expertise of Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, will ultimately help to produce stronger, more stable families in Westchester through the creation of this program. We have a long history of successful collaborations with LSHV, and I am thrilled that Westchester has been selected to operate this first-of-its-kind program upstate, which will address both the legal and social service issues confronting parents who are affected by the child welfare system.” Commissioner of DSS Kevin

McGuire said: “We are appreciative of New York State’s commitment to full representation and support of families engaged in the child welfare system, and are dedicated to this partnership with LSHV to achieve even better outcomes for the children and families we serve throughout Westchester County.” LSHV’s Chief Executive Officer Barbara Finkelstein said: “At Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, we advocate for individuals and families who cannot afford legal representation when their basic needs are at stake. This important collaboration with Westchester County will advance our clients’ due process rights while also helping them get the benefits and services they need. We could not do this important work without the support of our partners in government and because of this pilot program, hundreds of Westchester County families will receive critical legal assistance to ensure that they have a fair chance in the justice system.” The Family Defense Unit attorneys will be tasked with providing the appropriate legal and support services necessary for the clients, social workers will assess the needs of each family to provide case and crisis management, and parent advocates will provide peer-to-peer support to families on a weekly basis. LSHV, Westchester’s lead agency in domestic violence legal services, already has four community-based offices located in Mount Vernon, Peekskill, White Plains and Yonkers. The county Family Defense Unit is set to open in 2020. (Submitted)

Westchester County is launching a new tourism campaign aimed at differentiating Westchester by showing the true range of unique experiences available here to all types of potential visitors—both business and leisure. Contributed photo

Not just a place to go for a hike, a meal or a concert, Westchester is a place to become immersed in memorable activities, culture and surroundings. It’s an ideal getaway, a departure from the everyday. It’s beyond expectations. “Westchester County is the heart of the Hudson Valley and is a destination that generates billions of dollars in tourism revenue for the region,” Westchester County Executive George Latimer said. “Today’s launch of our new tourism campaign—“Beyond”—showcases the County to attract new visitors for a getaway—a departure from the everyday.” In 2019, the county Department of Film & Tourism’s marketing firm Mower conducted qualitative and quantitative research with leisure travelers, and meeting and event planners to gain insight on how those outside Westchester viewed the county’s strengths and appeal. This data helped the firm evolve tourism’s creative approach into a new campaign aimed at differentiating Westchester by showing the true range of unique experiences available here to all types of potential visitors—both business and leisure.

The focus groups included leisure travelers from Stamford, Connecticut, New York City and Marlton, New Jersey and meeting and event planners within the county and beyond. The data from these focus groups showed that the interest is there—with nearly 70 percent of survey takers said that they are likely to visit Westchester County in the future. “Mower is committed to our partnership with Westchester County Tourism & Film. Getting to this “Beyond” campaign creative has been collaborative and rewarding,” said Mary Gendron, Mower senior vice president and managing director. “That we were able to develop it based on solid, current market research has given it a strong foundation. We look forward to deploying the campaign with the goal of stimulating additional tourism, and tourism dollars, for the County.” Westchester County selected Mower in late 2018 based on a formalized search. Mower is one of the nation’s top independent marketing, advertising and public relations firm and a specialist in travel and tourism marketing. The new marketing campaign,

entitled “BEYOND,” showcases striking photography—done by local Westchester Photographer Rob D’Angelo—of destinations that delight visitors and exceed traveler expectations. Advertising is anchored in the tagline “Beyond expectations.” According to New York: Economic Impact of Tourism, Hudson Valley/Westchester report, Tourism Economics and supplied by NYSDED; hotel statistics: Smith Travel Research: • Visitor spending in Westchester supported 24,360 jobs directly and indirectly in 2018—5 percent of all jobs in Westchester County. Westchester comprises 39 percent of all Hudson valley Region Visitor Supported Jobs • In total, visitor spending grew 5 percent in 2018, representing 45 percent of all visitor spending in the Hudson Valley region. This ranks Westchester third in visitor spending in New York State—behind only New York City and Long Island. • Tourism activity benefits many industry sectors in Westchester with all visitor spending categories growing in 2018 to make up that nearly $2 billion record. Spending on lodg-

ing jumped 8 percent, followed by food & beverage and retail & service stations, up 5 percent. Recreation, transportation and spending on second homes also rose 4 percent each. • Travel and tourism continues to be a significant driver of the county’s economy, providing revenue to support vital county services that residents rely on. Local taxes and state taxes generated $233 million in 2018 from the travel and tourism industry alone. “This new tourism campaign is a commitment to make the industry stronger and boost tourism in Westchester County, said Natasha Caputo, director of the county office of Film and Tourism. “Travelers have many getaway options and see lots of messages, Beyond inspires and breaks through the noise—it’s true to what we have to offer as a destination.” The brand launch took place at a “Dinner & Dialogue” event hosted by Latimer. This reoccurring, open and free flowing discussion between Latimer and various business leaders gives the county executive an opportunity to hear directly from them on how to further bolster Westchester’s economy. By Andy Landorf & John Colquhoun

The New 60 is a weekly look about what it’s like to be in your 60’s in today’s world: adult children living at home, downsizing (jobs and houses), finding old friends on Facebook and deciphering text-speak. It’s a Brave New World of second homes, second careers and second marriages…and finding out after a lifetime of milkshakes and ice cream that you’re suddenly lactose-intolerant. The New 60 is created by two local 60-plus Westchester residents, John Colquhoun of Bronxville and Andy Landorf, who hails from Tarrytown. The duo are long-time advertising creatives and this, as the saying goes, is their Act II. Even though it features folks in their 60’s, if you know someone who is 60, have a parent who’s 60 or just generally enjoy watching funny things happen to other people, you’ll find something to relate to here—you may even find yourself saying, “Hey, that happened to me!” To read more of the New 60, visit their website at thenew60comic.com.

A vote of outrage LIVE MIKE Mike Smith

The results of the Baseball Hall of Fame votes were announced on Tuesday night, and as is to be expected whenever the crop of inductees is revealed, there was a quick and sudden backlash to the results. But it wasn’t fans groaning about the movement—or lack thereof—of the “steroid guys” in the polls or consternation about a hometown fan favorite getting the shaft yet again. This year, all the howling was about one vote in particular. This year’s inductees, predictably, will be former Yankee great Derek Jeter—an obvious first-ballot Hall-of-Famer—and longtime Rockies’ slugger Larry Walker, who finally broke the 75 percent barrier on his 10th and final try. But most of the news coverage surrounding the newest selections to the Hall didn’t focus on the wonderful career accom-

plishments of these two baseball legends. It all seemed to be about that one pesky vote, and even today, it baffles me. I mean, what writer in his right mind could possibly have voted for Brad Penny’s inclusion to the Hall? Of course, I kid. Tuesday’s outcry was really about the fact that Derek Sanderson Jeter, the captain himself, received only 396 out of a possible 397 votes, as one stubborn scribe blocked No. 2’s unanimous induction into Cooperstown. I get the fact that Yankee fans are upset. Jeter was undeniably one of the best players in the storied history of both the franchise and the sport. In addition to his numerous on-field triumphs, he deftly navigated his public life with nary a hint of scandal or impropriety. He was the face of baseball for the better part of his 19-year career and certainly earned the right to be the second-ever player to receive 100 percent of the Hall-of-Fame vote. But for fans to get worked up

over the fact that he’ll have to live with a paltry 99.7 percent vote percentage is preposterous. Fans took to social media in droves yesterday, complaining about the anonymous vote, claiming that the writer in question must have been from Boston or must have some longstanding grudge against the former Yankee shortstop. People called for this writer to be identified, shamed and publicly stripped of his vote for future Hall of Fame classes. Overall, I’m pretty sure that fans took the slight an awful lot harder than Derek Jeter, who will be enshrined in Cooperstown this summer regardless of the mystery voter’s ballot. Heck, this won’t even be news by the time Jeter gets inducted in July. The outrage cycle will move on and nobody in his right mind will remember what percentage of the vote that Jeter—or anyone else in Cooperstown for that matter—received. He’ll be just another legend enshrined among his peers, another piece of history for a sport that thrives on its connec-

Huskies top rival Rye girls basketball

league

HARRISON 56 RYE 52 RYE HS

1/17/20

Game Notes: • Harrison held a 36-17 lead at halftime • Amanda Latkany led all scorers with 18 points • The two teams will play again on 2/10 By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor Over the last few years, more than a few of the numerous showdowns between Harrison and Rye on the basketball court have turned out to be classic affairs. The two foes have squared off countless times in recent memory, from the regular season league contests to high-profile playoff showdowns, such as

Ashley Stagg goes up for a layup against Rye on Jan. 17. Stagg scored 16 points in Harrison’s 56-52 win.

the 2018 Class A finals. On Jan. 17, however, it was the Huskies who wrote the next chapter in the storied rivalry, earning a hardfought 56-52 road win over the Garnets. The Huskies came roaring out of the gate on Friday, stunning Rye with a barrage of points early on and jumping out to a 36-17 halftime lead. According to head coach Louis Kail, a few quick buckets helped Harrison play with more confidence against an otherwise explosive Rye team. “We came out and made some shots, and all year we’ve talked about sharing the basketball, moving the basketball, playing together and being connected,” said Kail. “They came out and did a great job, offensively, but more importantly on defense.”

Harrison’s defensive pressure paid dividends early on, especially evidenced by their ability to contain two of Section I’s top scorers in Amanda Latkany and Teaghan Flaherty. The Huskies held the duo to just five combined points in the first half, no small feat given their ability to score in multiple ways. “They are two of the best players in the section, and players of that quality, the best you can do is slow them down because you’re never going to stop them completely,” Kail said. “We said coming in that we didn’t want those two to beat us.” Latkany would finish with a game-high 18 points as the Garnets battled back in the second half, closing the deficit to as few as three points, but Harrison was

able to prevail, thanks in part to Ashley Stagg’s 16 points and double-digit scoring nights from Gabby Marraccini and Victoria Lendino. The win helped Harrison to improve to 7-3 on the season, while Rye dropped to 10-3 with the loss. The two teams will square off again on Feb. 10 at Harrison. “I give Rye a lot of credit, they’re a hell of a team and they came back in that fourth quarter,” said Kail. “But we’ve said it in practice, the only thing that’s going to beat us is if we’re not mentally tough. If we’re mentally tough, we know we’re going to be in a good place at the end of the game.” CONTACT: sports@hometwn.com
