Still Time Left: Input is Needed for the Westchester County Youth Bureau’s Community Youth Needs Assessment

The Westchester County Youth Bureau is seeking input from residents ages 12 and up on a Community Youth Needs Assessment, available online now through March 3. The purpose of the assessment is to identify current strengths, needs and ideas for future services for children and youth in our community.

As part of this assessment, there are three short surveys that are anonymous and confidential. Each survey takes approximately two to five minutes to complete. Surveys include one for youth ages 12-21, one for parents/ caregivers and lastly one for youth service providers (people who work with

youth at schools, nonprofits, religious organizations, community centers, etc.). The youth and parent surveys are in both English and Spanish.

The Arts Organization Award goes to a Westchester County non-profit arts organization that has made important contributions to the growth of Westchester’s cultural life over a significant period of time and has had an impact beyond its immediate community. The Picture House Regional Film Center is being recognized this year for “a visionary organization bringing the best of filmmaking to the community at two locations.”

ArtsWestchester CEO, Janet Langsam, said “One of the real treasures in the Westchester cultural scene is The Picture House Regional Film Center where they are growing by leaps and bounds, spreading their wonderful programs to Bronxville and beyond.”

Like many arts organizations in Westchester, The Picture House suffered a tremendous setback due to the pandemic. Despite the many challenges along the way to recovery, there were also surprising silver linings, including a unique opportunity to expand TPH’s film and education programs to the historic movie theater in Bronxville. For The Picture House, a nonprofit that was formed in 2003 when the Pelham theater was scheduled for demolition, it made complete sense to expand to Bronxville, rescuing another 1920s theater

and furthering the organization’s mission at the same time.

The Bronxville theater opened its doors to the public in February 2022. The expansion has strengthened the impact of The Picture House across the region through amplified access to the best available cinema, conversations, arts education, and live performances.

President and Executive Director of The Picture House, Laura deBuys said “Westchester is rich with arts organizations welcoming audiences once again. The creativity and leadership of this arts community is extraordinary. To be part of this notable group of award-winners means the world to us.”

TSA PreCheck Enrollment Coming to HPN

TSA PreCheck is the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) expedited security screening program for airline passengers who are considered low-risk and who qualify for the program. From Monday, March 27 through Friday, March 31, Westchester County Airport (HPN) will be working with the TSA in collaboration with IDEMIA to offer travelers the opportunity to enroll in the TSA PreCheck program here in Westchester. This special five-day enrollment period will be available daily at Westchester County Airport at 240 Airport Road in White Plains from 9 a.m.–noon and 1-5 p.m. in the terminal arrivals area near the baggage claim carousel.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “Bringing the PreCheck enrollment process up here to local residents is a benefit to all Westchester travelers who don’t have the time or extra resources to go down to JFK and back just to go through the enrollment process. I encourage all residents to consider taking advantage of this great limited-time opportunity to save time and stress.”

The TSA PreCheck program helps travelers save time through a smarter travel experience that expedites the checkpoint screening process and cuts down on the stress of travel. Those enrolled do not need to remove their shoes, laptops, 3-1-1 liquids, belts and light jackets when going through designated TSA PreCheck security lanes. In January 2023, 92% of the nation’s TSA PreCheck

passengers waited less than five minutes waiting to be screened.

Westch ester County Airport Manager April Gasparri said: “Westchester County Airport is excited to work with the TSA to expand enrollment of its TSA PreCheck program right here in Westchester. This is a win for local travelers and community members whether they fly through White Plains or elsewhere.”

Enrollment Process

The enrollment process is quick, convenient and even faster when the application is completed online beforehand. The in-person enrollment requires that applicants provide proof of identity, proof of citizenship, fingerprints and a photo. IDEMIA offers TSA PreCheck enrollment for $78 and if approved, travelers get a five-year membership with the program.

With a theme of Be the Beat, this year’s luncheon will feature tools and information to help Westchester County improve training and bystander CPR rates for women, who are still less likely to receive bystander CPR than men. The American Heart Association notes nearly three out of every four cardiac arrests happen in homes and is calling for at least one person in every household to learn Hands-Only CPR this February. The two simple steps of Hands-Only CPR are to call 911 and to push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives.

County celebrates March as National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month, and the theme for this year is “Fuel for the Future.” National Nutrition Month is an annual education campaign sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about all food choices, and to develop sound eating and physical activity habits.

This year’s theme, “Fuel for the Future,” encourages us to keep sustainability in mind when making healthy food choices throughout all stages of life. Sustainable nutrition fuels our bodies while protecting the environment. Some examples of sustainable nutrition are: choosing foods that are more plant based, have minimal packaging, shopping locally, buying foods in season and growing your own garden. The Academy reminds us that we can chose healthful foods that we enjoy, celebrate our culture and are budget friendly all with a little planning ahead.

Celebrated on the second Wednesday of March, during National Nutrition Month, is Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day. This year March 8 marks the day where we recognize registered dietitian nutritionists as the indispensable providers of food and nutrition services, and their commitment to helping people enjoy healthy lives.

The Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) at Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS) are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of older adults. They are tasked with the monitoring and safe operation of local senior nutrition programs, ensuring compliance of all state and federal regulations. They are responsible for menu development, and making sure the meals meet the 1/3 daily nutrient intake for the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI). They develop nutrition education presentations in various settings and provide individualized nutrition counseling to high-risk older adults.

A grand homecoming

personnel scurried about with clipboards, and a pandemic-weary populace queued around the building in order to get our shots.

Just because it’s an oft-repeated cliche doesn’t mean it’s untrue; there really is no place like home. On Monday, Feb. 27, Section 1 basketball finally went home, returning to the Westchester County Center for the first Championship Week since March of 2020.

And boy, was it glorious.

When I stepped back into the venue on Monday night to catch the second half of the Ardsley/ Hendrick Hudson Girls Class B semifinals, it was the first time I had set foot in the Westchester County Center since receiving my first COVID-19 vaccination back in March of 2021. Back then, the place was unsurprisingly unrecognizable—the arena floor had been partitioned into makeshift examination rooms, masked medical

It’s not a stretch to say the place had been robbed of some of the mirth and energy that makes it such a desirable venue for hosting high school sports.

But fast forward to Monday night, the place was rocking like we hadn’t missed a beat; the emotion on the court was palpable, exuberant student sections were packed into the balcony, DJ Diz was spinning the tunes from the scorer’s table, and Nathan’s hot dogs were selling like hot . . . cakes in the concession stands.

I might have been back in 2010 for all I knew.

There were some notable differences, however; The most glaring was the fact that Keith Yizar wasn’t there in his courtside seats to cheer on the action.

Yizar—a longtime Mamaroneck resident and educator who was a

basketball standout for Rye Neck High School—was a fixture of championship week, a man whose enthusiasm for the sport and support for student-athletes was positively infectious.

Yizar passed away in December of 2020, but his warm presence loomed large over the proceedings this week. The Westchester County Center honored Yizar’s contributions in a ceremony last week and his family was on hand to continue his legacy, all helping to bolster that sense of community that makes Championship Week about much more than final scores and Gold Balls.

Now that things are finally underway, it’s almost as if we never left; teams will battle all week long, champions will eventually be crowned and countless more Mecca memories will be made.

If absence makes the heart grow fonder, I can’t be the only one whose chest cavity is bursting at the thought of spending

more days watching Section 1’s top teams duke it out on the biggest stage possible.

The championships are home,

and that’s good for everyone.

It may come as no great surprise to fans that a championship hockey game between two top-ranked teams would come down to the wire, but that was the expectation—and the case—when No. 1 Rye took on No. 2 Pelham for the Section I Division 2 title on Sunday at SportO-Rama. For three periods two perennial powerhouse exchanged body blows in a back-and-forth slugfest, but by the time the final whistle sounded, it was the Pelicans who would claim the Section 1 crown with a 6-4 win. Trading leads throughout the game, Pelham went up by a goal early in the third period and seemed to be in control of the game before Tommy Broderick knotted the score at 4-4 with just under five minutes to play. Less than a minute later however, Pelham answered back as Griffin

Evans found a loose puck in the slot and buried the shot to put the Pelicans on top for good.

Despite a desperate Rye efforts to tie the game again, Pelham would add an empty netter seal their second-straight Section I title.

Rye coach Peter Thomas said that Pelham was able to perfectly execute its game plan, which allowed the reign-

ing New York State Champs to come out on top.

“We really played into their hands,” he said. “We knew what we needed to do. We talked about picking up guys in the slot. They like to throw pucks into the slot and just scramble. They’re very comfortable playing that way and we kind of let them play that game.”

Evans had two goals for

the Pelicans, who also got scores from Santino Esposito, Angus Deeney, Chris Franchini and Reed Finster. Luke Green had three assists in the win.

Tommy Broderick and Jack Broderick each scored for Rye, which was led by a two-goal day from Tommy Richardson.

Thomas said that, even though his team played

well on the penalty kill, taking inopportune penalties helped to rob the Garnets of them of one of their greatest strengths—their depth.

“Pelham was basically rolling two lines and spotting with a third and we were going with four and I thought that was going to help us in the long run,” said Thomas.

“But that gets negated when

you’re taking penalties.”

Rye finishes the season with a 15-7 record, while Pelham (15-7-1)—which lost its first two games of the year, including one to Rye—will now be in contention for their second straight state title. They will play the winner of Section 7 on March 4.
