CPW receives grant from Christopher Reeve Foundation

Cerebral Palsy of Westchester (CPW) is proud to announce that it has been awarded $12,579 as part of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation National Paralysis Resource Center (NPRC) 2022 2nd Cycle Direct Effect Quality of Life grants. CPW’s grant is one of fifty-seven grants totaling $1,122,501 that were awarded through the program, supporting nonprofit organizations that empower individuals living with paralysis. According to the Reeve Foundation, more than 3,600 grants totaling over $37 million have been awarded since the Quality of Life Grants Program’s inception. Funding for this program was made possible through a cooperative agreement with the Administration for Community Living (ACL grant #90PRRC0006-02-00).

“These awarded projects are addressing some of the most dire needs of our community. Organizations are still reeling from the effects of the pandemic and are now bracing for a possible recession while facing inflation and ever-rising costs,” said Mark Bogosian, Director, Quality of

Life Grants Program, Reeve Foundation.

“The Reeve Foundation is proud to partner with these organizations and support their initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the community we serve.”

CPW will use the grant to purchase and install a special adaptable and accessible wheelchair-to-water pool lift, allowing for a greater number of program participants living with severe disabilities the ability to enjoy the therapeutic effects of CPW’s swimming pool. Annually, over

150 child and adult program participants use the pool – it is a sought-after destination during the summer months, especially during the Jimmy Vejar Summer Fun program that runs each July and August. The pool is used for a variety of functions including swimming lessons, recreational swim, and swim therapy.

According to Linda Kuck, CPW’s Executive Director, “Water gives the person a higher range of motion capabilities, and, for many of our clients, is the only way they can exercise or move independently. We would like to thank the Reeve Foun-

dation for this wonderful gift!”

About the Reeve Foundation: The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research and improving the quality of life for individuals and families impacted by paralysis. By uniting the brightest minds in the field, the foundation works tirelessly to accelerate scientific discovery across the field of spinal cord research by investing in labs across the globe. Additionally, through a cooperative agreement with the Administration for Community Living, the Reeve Foundation’s National Paralysis Resource Center (NPRC) promotes the health, well-being, and independence of people living with paralysis, providing comprehensive information, resources, and referral services assisting over 100,000 individuals and families since its launch in 2002. The Reeve Foundation is committed to elevating our community’s voices and needs to achieve greater representation and independence. For more, visit christopherreeve.org.

The Board unanimously approved a three-year contract with Dr. Reynolds during a meeting last night at Jefferson Elementary School. Dr. Reynolds is currently the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources/Chief Human Resources Officer. He will start in his role on July 1, 2023, after the departure of current Superintendent Jonathan Raymond. Raymond is leaving the school district at the end of the school year due to family considerations.

“We are excited about Dr. Reynolds’ vision for collaborating with our children, community and talented teachers and staff to ensure every student is nurtured and supported,” said Board of Education President William Iannuzzi.

“The promotion of Dr. Reynolds enables our school district to maintain continuity and stability, and it provides ample time for Dr. Reynolds to be introduced into the role by current Superintendent Jonathan Raymond.”

Reynolds was gratified by the opportunity to serve New Rochelle and thanked the Board of Education for its faith in his abilities to support students, families, and community.

“We will make every decision with the best interests of our children in mind,” Dr. Reynolds said.

“I am committed to supporting the whole child to ensure readiness

Dr. Reynolds will continue his Human Resources responsibilities in upcoming months, but also will be a vital voice in school district strategies as he welcomes a transfer of knowledge from Raymond. Dr. Reynolds also will allocate time to meet with stakeholders and community leaders. When Dr. Reynolds becomes Superintendent on July 1, 2023, his salary will be $290,000.

Reynolds offers well-rounded experience working in Westchester County school districts. He started as an elementary school teacher in the Mount Vernon and Greenburgh Central School District schools, and then rose through administrative ranks with the goal of helping students beyond the walls of his own classroom. Before joining the City School District of New Rochelle, he served as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Personnel in Greenburgh. He also has held the position of Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources in the White Plains School District; was Assistant Superintendent for Supervision, Curriculum and Instruction for Elementary Administration in the Yonkers Public Schools; and was an Assistant Principal and Principal for a decade in the Ossining Union Free School District.

Why you need dental insurance in retirement.

Many Americans are fortunate to have dental coverage for their entire working life, throughemployer-provided benefits. When those benefits end with retirement, paying dental bills out-of-pocket can come as a shock, leading people to put off or even go without care. Simply put — without dental insurance, there may be an important gap in your healthcare coverage.

Medicare doesn’t pay for dental care.1

 Look for coverage that helps pay for major services. Some plans may limit the number of procedures — or pay for preventive care only.

 Look for coverage with no deductibles. Some plans may require you to pay hundreds out of pocket before benefits are paid.

 Shop for coverage with no annual maximum on cash benefits. Some plans have annual maximums of $1,000.

That’s right. As good as Medicare is, it was never meant to cover everything. That means if you want protection, you need to purchase individual insurance.

Early detection can prevent small problems from becoming expensive ones.

The best way to prevent large dental bills is preventive care. The American Dental Association recommends checkups twice a year.

Previous dental work can wear out. Even if you’ve had quality dental work in the past, you shouldn’t take your dental health for granted. In fact, your odds of having a dental problem only go up as you age.2

Treatment is expensive — especially the services people over 50 often need. Consider these national average costs of treatment ... $217 for a checkup ... $189 for a filling ... $1,219 for a crown.3 Unexpected bills like this can be a real burden, especially if you’re on a fixed income.

“I don’t worry”

“Now that I have your dental policy, I don’t worry about going to the dentist. I love your plan — you pay what you say!”

Colleen W., MO

Prepare to be hungry! It’s time to make your reservations for Spring 2023 Hudson Valley Restaurant Week. From Pelham to Peekskill, 68 Westchester restaurants from all over the County are participating in this bi-annual celebration of the local culinary scene.

The Spring kickoff was held at Maria Restaurant in New Rochelle, the three-time Michelin Guide “Bib Gourmand” Award winner. Maria is a restaurant everyone is talking about, with new Italian cuisine in a trendy bistro setting. Signatures include baked clams, chianti braised pork shank, mushroom risotto, and the “Yo Maria,” the blue-hued house cocktail. Maria features specialty pasta dishes using mushrooms from Westchester Mushroom Company, the County’s first indoor mushroom farm, where hand-picked mushrooms are grown locally and harvested just hours before reaching the table.

County Executive George Latimer said: “Hudson Valley Restaurant Week is a favorite for both residents and visitors of the County. It is a fun way to get out and try a new Westchester restaurant or revisit a favorite. Many participating restaurants are close to train stations which makes it easy to hop on the train from the city or nearby town to try a new spot.”

Today Media’s Hudson Valley Group Publisher Mike Martinelli said: “New this year is an exciting partnership with the MTA called, Train to Table. There are many fabulous restaurants participating in Hudson Valley Restaurant Week that are so close to our train stations, that it makes for a con-

venient way to experience a wonderful culinary event. It’s perfect for daily commuters, weekend travelers, or day-trippers alike.”

Metro-North President and Long Island Rail Road Interim President Catherine Rinaldi said: “Whether you’re visiting a restaurant near your home station or planning a weekend getaway, the MTA can take you there. Metro-North is not just a commuter railroad – it is also the best way to experience all the Hudson Valley has to offer.”

Director of Westchester County’s Office of Tourism and Film Office Natasha Caputo said: “Spring is such a wonderful time to explore Westchester and experience a delicious meal. We encourage both residents and visitors to make their reservations and get out and dine.”

Maria Restaurant Owner/Chef Giovanni Cucullo said: “Westchester is fast becoming a food destination and Maria is happy to be a part of the

vibrant culinary scene here in New Rochelle and the region. At Maria, we really value the importance of fresh ingredients and strive to support local purveyors as much as possible.”

For two delicious weeks, from March 20-April 2, the Hudson Valley will be celebrating restaurant dining with delicious, creative dishes featuring locally sourced ingredients. Prix-fixe lunches and dinners will be offered at $24.95, $29.95, $39.95 or $44.95. (Pricing does not include tax, beverages, or gratuity.) Prix-fixe menus may be offered for both dine-in and takeout. Diners should also be sure to check out HVRW newcomers including Freddy’s in Pleasantville, The Tasty Table in Ossining, and Harbour Fish Restaurant in Mamaroneck.

Newsweek ranks White Plains Hospital one of world’s best

White Plains Hospital has been named as one of the world’s best hospitals by Newsweek for the second year in a row. It is one of just 10 hospitals in the state, and the only one in Westchester County, to be included on the prestigious list. The World’s Best Hospitals 2023 list recognizes the best medical institutions across 28 countries, with 414 based in the United States.

Newsweek global editor-in-chief Nancy Cooper said the list is meant to “be useful to patients and families seeking the best care for themselves and loved ones, as well as to hospitals as they benchmark themselves against their peers.”

Newsweek teamed with market data research firm Statista to develop a rigorous methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the rankings. Four data sources were used for the evaluation, including an international online survey of more than 80,000 doctors, hospital managers and health care professionals; patient experience surveys measuring patient satisfaction with hospitals; hospital quality metrics on outcomes, hygiene measures, patient safety, and staffing; and patient-reported outcome measures.

“Being recognized as one of the world’s best hospitals serves as further evidence that we continue to make a real difference in the lives of patients through the exceptional care we provide,” said Dr. Michael Palumbo, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at White Plains Hospital, not-

ing the impressive number of accolades the Hospital has received over the past couple of years.

White Plains Hospital is a proud member of the Montefiore Health System, serving as its tertiary hub of advanced care in the Hudson Valley. The Hospital is a 292-bed not-for-profit health care organization with the primary mission of providing exceptional acute and preventive medical care to all people who live in, work in or visit Westchester County and its surrounding areas. White Plains Hospital has outpatient medical facilities across Westchester, including multispecialty practices in Armonk, Larchmont, New Rochelle, Rye Brook, Somers and Yorktown Heights; and Scarsdale Medical Group locations in Harrison and Scarsdale.

The Hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission and in 2022, White Plains Hospital received a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) — the highest distinction offered by that federal agency. In addition, the Hospital received its third Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a distinction held by only two percent of hospitals in the country. White Plains Hospital has consistently received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades®, and in 2022 became the only Hospital in Westchester to be awarded with an A Safety Grade from the Leapfrog Group for the 8th time.

Not psyched about the Madness

Call me a downer, but I’m just having a hard time getting wild about March Madness.

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tourney—maybe the biggest collegiate event of the year–kicks off this week, and while I’ve treated past tournaments as an excuse to binge on hoops for eight or more hours a day, this year, I’m filled with an overwhelming sense of “meh.” There might be a few reasons for my nonchalance this year; the main one being that, the only collegiate sports team I root for, Villanova, will not be “dancing” this month after an underwhelming season following the departure of surefire Hall-of-Fame coach Jay Wright.

And while I’d normally be happy to throw my fandom

behind an upstart local team like No. 13 Iona who drew No. 4 UConn in the first round, I’ve had a hard time getting invested in the Gaels after all the uncertainty about Rick Pitino’s future with the program began to dominate local sports chatter.

But most of all, I came to realize that I’ve just done a terrible job following college sports this year. Ordinarily, I’ll start to really get zeroed in on the rankings—both national and Big East–around Jan. 10, so when the tourney rolls around, I’ve got at least a passable knowledge about the teams and players to watch. But my attention this winter has been stolen by the Knicks and the Rangers, meaning I was barely even paying attention to the conference tournaments last week.

Heck, I can only name a handful of college stars right

now, and the first guy that comes to mind is Alabama’s All-American Brandon Miller, a terrific player who has been all over the news for all the wrong reasons.

Does that mean I won’t be tuning in this month? Of course not. March Madness is tradition and I’m sure I’ll find some sort of hook to the narrative, be it this year’s Cinderella team or a double-overtime first-round scare for a favorite. But outside of my own personal brackets— which were basically filled out by flipping a coin—I just don’t feel invested at the tournament’s start.

But who knows; maybe Friday afternoon, Iona will be putting a second-half scare into the Huskies and I’ll forget about the fact that Pitino will soon be leaving these kids for the greener pastures of Jamaica, Queen snd really buy in.

Or maybe this is one year I

just admit the the college game has—at least for now—gotten a bit away from me.

Just like those teams who were relegated to an appearance in the NIT, there’s always next

year.

March Madness tips off this week, but Sports Editor Mike Smith is having trouble mustering much enthusiasm for an event he once looked forward to.

Students, Coaches Take Part in Leadership Summit

The Section 1 high school sports season won’t officially kick off until Monday, March 13, but Eastchester’s coaches and athletes were hard at work this week, preparing for the tests that lay ahead. But this training wasn’t taking place in the gyms or on the fields, and it didn’t involve watching game tape or hitting personal bests in the weightroom. The work done this week was centered around improving communication and leadership skills

On March 8 and 9, student-athletes and coaches took part in an Athletic Leadership Summit run by the Janssen Sports Leadership Center (JSLC). The goal of the symposium was to bring together a broad cross-section of those affiliated with Eastchester’s sports teams in order to define the leadership qualities that make individuals, teams, and athletic programs successful.

Eastchester Athletic Director Brad Gitlin said holding an event like this can help set the tone of the athletic culture in the school and also serve to put in place clear standards of leadership and accountability.

“We say that athletics provides X,Y,Z in terms of character traits, but we know now more about these characteristics, we know the science, theory and philosophy

behind leadership,” he said. “So the question becomes, how do we take the time to be very intentional about that work?” Over the course of two nights, students and coaches heard from a JSLC representative and also took part in a series of exercises that helped them to define that characteristics of programs that enjoy periods of sustained success marked by personal growth.

“I think it definitely opened my eyes as to what it entails to be a better leader,” said Fred DiCarlo, who has coached basketball and

football at Eastchester for the last 32 years. ”I think we have a tendency to take things like leadership for granted, but now we’re able to focus steps we can take to build that.”

Junior Adriana Correa, a three-sport athlete, said the workshop helped her to examine her own leadership style and believes that some of the exercises will help her set a better example for her teammates both on and off the field.

“I think it definitely helped in terms of communication,” said Correa. “It showed that

you don’t have to be the best player to be a captain or a leader, you can still make a difference in the way you talk to your teammates.”

Some coaches admitted that the summit also caused them to reassess what qualities of leadership are most important to building a successful program. Catherine Manning, who took over as the girls varsity volleyball coach at the beginning of the year, explained that being more cognizant of how leadership can shape a team will help her to become a more effective coach.

“It made me think about how I, as a coach, can have a more positive impact on the team,” she said. “I think everyone really bought in which is important.”

Gitlin said it was important for both students and coaches to take part in this training, as it will help build a more unified culture moving forward and give everyone the tools they will need to continue to strengthen Eastchester’s athletic programs.

“One of the things we wanted to do was make sure we were doing this in parallel,” said Gitlin. “We wanted

to make sure students and coaches were speaking the same language so we can all move in the same direction.”

Junior Aidan Schultz agreed with Gitlin’s assessment and believes that a continued focus on leadership will be beneficial to the school, both in the long and short term.

“I think if you look at Eastchester sports, they’re trending up right now,” said Schultz. “And I think we can take those expectations even higher.”

Photos/Mike Smith For two days last week, Eastchester coaches and athletes were asked to reflect on the qualities that define a leader. Athletic Director Brad Gitlin believes that introspective thinking will ultimately help student-athletes get more out of their participation in interscholastic sports.
