Lifting Up Westchester announces 2023 student essay winners

Lifting Up Westchester, a non-profit agency committed to helping individuals experiencing homelessness and hunger achieve self-sufficiency, announces the winners of their sixth annual student essay contest. Open to all students attending school in Westchester in the 7th to 12th grades, this year students were invited to think about the connections between, and misperceptions about, mental health and homelessness and how we might end the stigmas attached to both.

The essay contest was established in 2017 in memory of Beth Massey Rubens, a 40-year resident of Scarsdale and a lifelong teacher, tutor, and mentor who had a love for language arts.

Students were asked to consider that mental health impacts how we think, feel and act and how we cope with life. Mental health also influences how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Family illness, job loss, divorce, not doing well in school, being bullied, hunger, poor housing and becoming unhoused are just some of the things that can trigger mental health issues. This can result in emotions such as anxiety, depression, or loneliness. “With a nationally increased focus on the importance of mental health, this year’s topic clearly struck a chord

County urges residents to testify over Con Ed rate hike

On Monday, the Board’s Legislation and Environment Committees unanimously passed a Resolution in opposition to ConEdison’s proposed rate increase. The full Board will vote on this resolution at their meeting next Monday, and this resolution will be submitted to the PSC as part of their comment period. It will also be presented to the PSC at their public hearings later this week.

Con Ed proposes to raise electric rates over a three-year period by an average of 20% for electric rates and 31% for gas rates and the board feels strongly that hardworking New Yorkers laboring to meet compounding financial demands should not be forced to shoulder these rate increases.

Residents, organizations and municipalities can additionally raise their voices at the virtual PSC public hearing. These hearings are scheduled for March 29 and March 30, with two sessions on each day: 1 p.m. and again at 5 p.m. Registration can still be made for the March 30 hearings, but you must register by 3pm tomorrow. The DPS must first approve the rates before they go into effect.

for students,” said Anahaita Kotval, CEO of Lifting Up Westchester. “Students shared deeply personal stories about their own challenges with mental health. But as they researched the underlying causes of homelessness, they learned that mental health issues are not the primary cause of individuals becoming homeless. With this knowledge, many of them suggested ways to help end the stigmas attached to both mental health and homelessness so that we can all work toward a better future for everyone.”

A panel of 49 judges reviewed the essays to select the ultimate winners. First, second

and third place and honorable mention cash prizes will be awarded in each of the three grade groups: 7th and 8th grades, 9th and 10th grades, and 11th and 12th grades. An ESL category was also established for any student from grades 7 through 12 for whom English is a second language.

The Osborn receives highest accreditation

The Osborn continuum of care community in Rye has been awarded its fifth consecutive five-year accreditation by CARF International. Widely recognized as the highest standard in senior living excellence, CARF accreditation attests to a community’s resident-centered focus, sound governance, and fiscal strengths. Finances are reviewed in such areas as policies, evaluation of market trends, and financial ratios.

The Osborn is one of only two ‘Continuing Care Retirement Communities’ in Westchester County and six in New York State to currently hold the CARF accreditation distinction.

“We are proud to have again earned CARF’s prestigious reaccreditation which demonstrates our high standards in all aspects of senior living,” said Osborn President and CEO Matthew G. Anderson. “Further, it reflects our commitment to person-centered services that enhance the lives of those we serve.”

The mission of CARF International, formed in 1966, is to promote the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process and continuous improvements that center on enhancing the lives of persons served. Continuing care communities that achieve CARF’s stringent standards are among the finest in the country.

The CARF report stated: “The Osborn

has a dedicated and talented staff and board that are knowledgeable and passionate about offering person-centered services. Staff and residents noted the high level of communication, which positively impacts the operation. Residents are proud of their personal involvement in and commitment to The Osborn. The transparency of the board and leadership has

built a level of trust among staff, residents, and families. The organization shows great financial strength.”

CARF accreditations for Continuing Care Retirement Communities are for five years. The Osborn received its first fiveyear CARF accreditation in 2002 and has been reaccredited for successive five-year terms.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced this week that customers registering a vehicle at a DMV office will now be asked to consider joining the organ donor registry. The question will be displayed on the transaction screen before the customer completes their registration. If they enter yes, they will be able to quickly and easily submit their application to join the registry. When a customer agrees to join the Donate Life registry, “Organ Donor” will be printed on the front of their DMV photo document when they request a new document.

“There is no greater gift than the gift of life, and DMV is glad to be the number one way New Yorkers register to be potential life savers,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “We are proud to take every opportunity to remind our customers of the great need for organ donors. So many families and individuals have been impacted by this life-saving step, and others are anxiously waiting for a donor organ to be available.”

Increasing Donor Enrollment

DMV has been working with the Department of Health and Donate Life NYS to explore different avenues to increase organ donor registration throughout the state. Together, they developed a new training curriculum for DMV staff to better understand the importance of organ donation and the significant role they plan in supporting the organ donor registry. In New York, 84 percent of current registrants joined the registry through the DMV.

DMV offices also display Donate Life NYS’ awareness materials year-round, and offer a Donate Life custom license plate to raise awareness and support critical research. When a consumer orders the plate, $20 of the annual fee is directed to the “Life Pass It On Trust Fund,” which is used for organ donation and transplant research and educational programs. Plates can be ordered on the DMV website. In addition, since 2020, New Yorkers have had the opportunity to contribute to the Fund when filing their income taxes.

With only 46 percent of its population registered, New York’s registry lags behind other states. The national average is 62 percent. Donate Life NYS suggests that for New York to reach the national average of registered organ donors, 2.7 million new donors need to be added to the registry.

How to Enroll

There are several ways New Yorkers can enroll.

New Yorkers can also enroll in the NYS Donate Life Registry today through the following online options:

• The NYS Donate Life Registry website - www.donatelife.ny.gov

• The NYS Department of Motor Vehicles website - dmv.ny.gov

Under “Lauren’s Law,” DMV customers can also register as an organ donor by completing the donation section of their driver license or non-driver ID renewal application. The law is named for Lauren Shields, a Rockland County resident who received a life-saving heart transplant at age 9.

New Yorkers registering to vote can join the Registry by completing that section of the voter registration paper or online form. New Yorkers also have the option of becoming an organ donor when applying for various licenses or certifications from the Department of State, as well as through the New York State of Health Official Health Plan Marketplace when applying for health insurance.

Organ Donation Stats

As of today, 8,074 New Yorkers are candidates on the national transplant wait list. Many of those people have been on that list for years. In fact, 1,124 of them have been waiting more than five years for an organ transplant, and 412 New Yorkers died last year because they did not receive an organ in time.

One organ donor has the potential to save eight lives and heal 75 more through eye and tissue donations.

Aisha M. Tator, executive director of Donate Life New York State (NYS), said: “We commend NYS DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder for his innovative leadership in further identifying solutions for New Yorkers to register their decision to be organ, eye, and tissue donors. We’re thrilled that the Donate Life Registry enrollment opportunity is being integrated into the customer-facing devices (CFDs) as part of the vehicle registration process at DMV offices statewide providing yet another opportunity for New Yorkers to answer this lifesaving question. This joint effort will only continue to save and heal lives and move us closer toward Donate Life NYS’ vision of ensuring a life-changing transplant for every New Yorker in need.”

Why you need dental insurance in retirement.

Many Americans are fortunate to have dental coverage for their entire working life, throughemployer-provided benefits. When those benefits end with retirement, paying dental bills out-of-pocket can come as a shock, leading people to put off or even go without care. Simply put — without dental insurance, there may be an important gap in your healthcare coverage.

Medicare doesn’t pay for dental care.1

 Look for coverage that helps pay for major services. Some plans may limit the number of procedures — or pay for preventive care only.

 Look for coverage with no deductibles. Some plans may require you to pay hundreds out of pocket before benefits are paid.

 Shop for coverage with no annual maximum on cash benefits. Some plans have annual maximums of $1,000.

That’s right. As good as Medicare is, it was never meant to cover everything. That means if you want protection, you need to purchase individual insurance.

Early detection can prevent small problems from becoming expensive ones.

The best way to prevent large dental bills is preventive care. The American Dental Association recommends checkups twice a year.

Previous dental work can wear out. Even if you’ve had quality dental work in the past, you shouldn’t take your dental health for granted. In fact, your odds of having a dental problem only go up as you age.2

Treatment is expensive — especially the services people over 50 often need. Consider these national average costs of treatment ... $217 for a checkup ... $189 for a filling ... $1,219 for a crown.3 Unexpected bills like this can be a real burden, especially if you’re on a fixed income.

“I don’t worry”

“Now that I have your dental policy, I don’t worry about going to the dentist. I love your plan — you pay what you say!”

Battling the March elements

I’ve spent a lot of time and space ranting about the weather recently, but boy, are my complaints warranted.

We’re only a week into the spring season and my overall experience has been downright dreadful. In the span of just four days this week, I’ve been frozen, drenched, windburned and—perhaps most importantly—concerned that the new camera I purchased a few months ago wouldn’t survive the storms.

But what stuck out to me, even more than the discomfort I felt patrolling the sidelines this week, was the fact that braving a little inclement weather is a lot tougher as an adult that it was as a student athlete.

When I was playing high

school football, there was nothing I loved more than a good-old-fashioned rain game. A soggy, muddy, slog, your equipment taking on pounds and pounds of water-weight, there was nothing better. We adored those games—even if our mothers didn’t went faced with the after effects of our rain-soaked gear and uniforms.

Likewise, I could tell that the student-athletes taking the field on Saturday and Monday relished the opportunity to be out there. They were playing with the joy and exuberance of youth, which is more than I can say for myself.

It didn’t matter how good the games I was covering were, I was grumpy, wet and cold—and more than feeling my age.

And honestly, that’s a real shame.

I don’t know what it is about the weather that thrilled us

as kids—thunderstorms and blizzards in particular—that puts adults out. I used to gladly sacrifice my comfort for an “event,” whereas now, even having to go outside during a slight drizzle really rubs me the wrong way. But it’s not just me; over the last week nearly everyone I’ve spoken with—from parents to referees and coaches—seemed less than thrilled with the opportunity to spend two-plus hours getting hammered by the elements, even if it’s all for a great cause, which watching our student-athletes compete certainly is. But in the end, what else can I do but complain? The weather is the weather—especially in New York in lateMarch—and there’s nothing to be done about it. So I’ll bundle up, keep my rain gear close and pray that this last gasp of winter soon makes way for the glorious mid 70s climes of April.

It’s either that or find a way to have one of these local team take

me down to Florida next week; but that may ultimately be a stretch.

Garnets look to defend crown in 2023

Game Notes

In their final tuneup before the start of the regular season, Rye’s lacrosse team found themselves matched up against Connecticut powerhouse New Canaan. And while the Garnets might not have come away with a pre-season win, one thing was clear; even though there may be some new faces on the Rye roster this year, the expectations remain as high as always.

After graduating several key contributors from last season’s Section I title team, the Garnets have retool with a strong returning class and some promising youngsters, something that head coach Steve Lennon said is going to serve his team well this year.

The Garnets have no shortage of upperclassman talent, led by Kian McCarthy, who Lennon feels comes into the season as one of

the top players in Section 1.

Along with McCarthy, veterans like Tanner Howson, Will Bainbridge, Chris Guazzo and Andrew Keller form a nucleus that the team’s emerging stars will take their cues from.

“We have some really good veteran guys who are bringing everything from the past few years,” said Lennon.

“And we have some really talented younger guys who

everyone is going to know pretty soon.”

Against the Rams on Monday, Lennon saw his team working to figure out its identity. Although New Canaan was able to edge the Garnets with a late flurry of goals, Lennon said there were plenty of teachable moments that will only serve to make his team ready for the task at hand.

“We’re just trying to iron

out some of the stuff we’ve been working on, and I think the film from this game is going to be telling about what we need to get better at,” he said. “We have guys still fighting for spots to see where they’re going to fit in.” That group will be thrown into the fire early on, as the Garnets’ early-season schedule pits them against some of the top teams from Section I and beyond. Rye

opens up with Mahopac on March 29, after press time, before taking on Scarsdale, Mamaroneck, Ridgefield (CT) and last year’s state champions from North Shore.

That grueling stretch should prepare the Garnets for a deep playoff run, said the head coach.

“This is why we play those schedules; we really have a gauntlet for our first

five, six games where it’s just team after team that are not going to let you make mistakes without paying for it,” said Lennon. “So we’re going to figure out where we need to get better, hopefully get some wins in the process, and even if we don’t, the aim is always to be there in June.”
