• The CDC no longer recom mends quarantine except in highrisk congregate settings. The CDC recommends that all people with a known or suspected COVID-19 exposure regardless of vaccination status or history of prior COVID-19 infection follow current CDC exposure recommendations which include wearing a well-fitting mask or respirator for a full 10-day period and getting tested at least 5 days after close contact or sooner if symptoms develop.

On Monday, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced updated COVID-19 guidance that aligns with new CDC recommendations as chil dren, teachers and faculty across the state prepare to head back to school in the coming weeks. With increased access to COVID-19 information, vaccination, testing and treatment, New York state is updating its response to ensure all students, teachers and faculty can make a safe return to the classroom next“Sincemonth.the early, uncertain days of the pandemic, New York schools, teachers and parents stepped up to ensure continued learning and a safe return to the classroom,” Hochul said. “Today, we are making sure that state and federal guidance is aligned so that students and edu cators can enter the classroom with confidence and have a safe, healthy school year. We’re getting this infor mation out to parents, into schools, and making sure that our children are where they need to be this fall. We know there’s no replacement for in-classroom learning, and we’re going to make sure that this year is a very different year.” New York has made signifi cant progress in the fight against COVID-19. It is through these ongo ing efforts that schools can provide safe instructional environments, increase access to COVID-19 test ing and ensure that staff, students and their families have access to the resources they need to safely remain in COVIDschool.Mitigation Strategies for the 2022-2023 School Year

• The CDC continues to recom mend that people stay home when sick. Any student or staff member who has symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal infections, such as cough, fever, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea, should stay home.

“Parents should schedule vaccine visits with their health care provider as soon as possible to be sure their children have the vaccines they need to stay in school. For those without insurance, or who have ChildHealth Plus or Medicaid, the County Health Department can help,” county Health Commis sioner Dr. Sherlita Amler. Besides school vaccines, the county also offers influenza and COVID-19 vaccines for children ages six months and older. Children must have their first dose of all required vacci nations within 14 days from the first day of school. Parents and guardians of children must show they have made appointments for all required follow-up doses within 30 days of the start of school. New York state eliminated religious exemptions for vaccinations as of the 2019 school year. Families with no insurance, ChildHealth Plus or Medic aid, should call the county Health Department to schedule an appointment for vaccines at no charge. Call 995-5800 to find out if you qualify, and to make an appointment.

State releases guidance for back to school

The Rolling Stones. Jerry Garcia called it one of his two favorite venues in the USA. In 2012, The Capitol Theatre underwent a major renovation under the guidance of music entrepreneur Peter Shapiro. Since then, it has hosted major per formers including Bob Dylan, Phil Lesh, Ringo Starr, Joan Baez, Skrillex, Bonnie Raitt, Snoop Dogg, Kacey Musgraves, The Strokes, Tom Petty, Cyndi Lauper, and Willie Nelson, as well as comedians like Kevin Hart and Amy Schum er. For as long as I can remember, the rhythm of the football preseason has been a familiar one. You report to camp towards the end of August, start in helmets, work your way through to “uppers,” finally work your way towards full-padded prac tices, have one scrimmage and hit the ground running once the regular season starts. Last year, however, the NYSPHSAA ruled that teams that had completed the requisite num ber of pre-season practices were able to schedule an optional regular season game the week before the season’s “official” opening day.

While only a handful of teams took advantage of this new rule last year, there are currently 18 Section I games for the weekend of Sept. 2 this year, a noticeable increase of teams looking to start their season a week earlier. And really, doesn’t it make sense?Scrimmages can be a valuable tool in preparing a team for a season, but is there anything that can compares in terms of gaining in-game experience than . . . playing in games?Iguess that all depends. Some coaches who have opted not to participate in Week Zero games might tell you that it’s easier to instruct on the field—not to mention get more players more reps—in a scrimmage-type scenario. Others might argue that the intensity and speed of a regular season game is a tough thing to replicate in a scrimmage format. It’s really a “six of one, half-a-doz en of the other” dilemma, but I can tell you one thing; as a former high school football player myself, the preseason could be torturous when you looked at that first game circled on the schedule and realized you were still three weeks away from taking the field.

Last year, Rye quarterback Owen Kovacs laid things out pretty plainly after his Garnet team’s “Week Zero” win over Our Lady of Lourdes.“Coach [Garr] said we could have just had a scrimmage and played tiddlywinks,” said Kovacs. But it’s better to get a real game in, and now we’re a step ahead of everyone else.”

With more and more teams availing themselves of an early start, “Week Zero” games may very well become the norm as opposed to theWilloutlier.that fact inspire more coach es to schedule earlier games next year? It’s honestly tough to say at thisButpoint.one thing is for sure; I’m al ways up for covering some football, so in my estimation, the earlier, the better. Follow Mike on @LiveMike_SportsTwitter

Week Zero games more popular in 2022

The 2022-23 Fall Sports season officially kicked off this week, as student-athletes across New York State finally got back on the field— and the court—to write the next chapter in their athletic careers. But as much as the unspoken sentiment of the upcoming school year, is as nice as it is going to be to (hopefully) be getting back to some sense of normalcy after Covid-19—and the specter of its resurgence—certainly played a large part in the sports landscape over the last few years, there are some things that are going to look a little bit Ondifferent.thefootball front, the rapid rise of the “Week Zero” game is the most notable change gaining traction this year.

Two Eastchester High School quarterbacks drop back to pass on the first day of preseason camp on Aug. 22. Many Section I football teams will be playing “Week Zero” games to get an early start on the Fall campaign.

sports@hometwn.comContact: Mike Drost hauls in a catch on Aug. 20 against the DC Breeze. Ethan Fortin defends a DC player in Saturday’s Divisional Championship game.

“It’s a really good matchup, skill-wise,” said Jagt. “Anytime you have that equal skill and play a lot of games against each other, you start to learn each other’s tendencies and bring out the best in one another.”Withthe win, the Empire (13-0) is one of four teams that will move on to AUDL’s Championship Weekend, which is held in Madison, Wisconsin. On Aug. 26, they will take on the South Division Champion Carolina Flyers (12-1) who topped the Austin Sol 22-20 on Saturday. As his team gears up for its semifi nal-round game, Jagt said the Empire will need to build on the lessons they learned from their nail-biter against the Breeze.“It’spossible to have an emotional victory and then coast, but I don’t think that’s the emotional makeup of our team,” he said. “I think we’re not going to be resting on our laurels because we almost lost that game and we had a five-goal victory that we blew and I think it’s more of a wakeup call than anything.”

Sometimes, there’s just no substitute for height. The DC Breeze learned that lesson the hard way in the AUDL Eastern Conference Finals on Saturday night, as the New York Empire edged their vis itors 19-18 on a last-second goal from Jack Williams to 6-foot-6 standout Ben Jagt. With the score knotted and time running out on Aug. 20, Williams let loose a 35-yard heave from the right hashmark, hitting Jagt for the game-winner in traffic to send the Empire to their fourth straight AUDL Championship Weekend.Jagt, whose game-winning grab helped keep the Em pire’s season alive—and their perfect record intact—said knowing the situation and his teammates tendencies, allow him to be in position to make the“Weplay.knew that when it goes to one side with the clock winding down, we’re going to want to attack oppo site side, so when I saw Jack catch it on the right, I went to the left,” he said. “I’m tall, but I’m not trying to get in the middle of everything, so Jeff [Babbitt], my other big-bod ied teammate, got the crowd to go up and I just slipped to Empire

stun Breeze in AUDL Divisional Championship game the back and caught it.” New York (13-0) hasn’t been tested much this season, but their closest games have all come against the Breeze. The two teams met twice during the regu lar season, with the Empire topping DC by three and four goals respectively. Saturday’s Divisional Championship Ben Jagt is congratulated by teammates after getting the game-winning goal on Aug. 20 against the DC Breeze. Jagt’s score came with no time left on the clock and lifted the Empire to the divisional championship. game proved to be the tight est contest between the two teams yet, with the Breeze and Empire trading scores down the stretch to set up the decisive score.
