“Children were eating and snacking on food when stressed, often mindlessly eating when bored and watching TV,” said Joseph. “If parents make poor eat ing habits, it’s passed through the family. Obesity doesn’t run in families, but poor eating habits do. Now is the time to change this.”

However, pizza.itwas the pandemic that caused many of their young patients to take a further step back in the fight against“Manyobesity.ofour kids sat at home, eating out of boredom or stress, and not exercising while they were cooped up at home,” she said.

The consequences are more than cosmetic: Children with obesity are more likely to have type 2 diabetes, risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and muscle and joint problems. Furthermore, obese children are far more likely to become adults with chronic illnesses.

A CDC study of children 2 to 19 years of age found that during the pandemic the percentage of obese chil dren and teens increased to 22 percent. Another study by the University of Michigan and Kaiser Permanente found that among obese kids, expected annual weight gain increased from 8.8 pounds before the pandemic to 14.6 pounds. Even those children who had a healthy weight prior to the pandemic saw their annual rate of weight gain increase, from 3.4 pounds to 5.4 pounds.

Unlike children in more affluent families, where families could afford buying a bike or a dog to keep their chil dren active, these were luxuries many Open Door patients couldn’t fathom.

With indications that Americans have largely returned to their pre-pan demic lives, Puthiyamadam calls now a “critical time” to educate families on the importance of a healthy lifestyle for their children. This includes stressing the dan gers of additives and the addictive nature of sugar, eating a more balanced diet, and getting regular exercise. Not getting them headed in the right direction, she said, can be particularly serious at a time when, “We are seeing children as young as nine with type 2 diabetes and many children at 10 weighing as much as 140 pounds.”Sheteaches “mindful eating” to help children develop a deeper connection with food in order to create lifelong, healthy habits. She also espouses a weight-neutral approach, with the goal to cultivate healthy habits—eating healthy, getting regular exercise—rather than us ing weight loss as an indicator of health. This may include changing what their meal plate looks like by adding more vegetables and plant-based foods and reducing starches, while at the same time remaining culturally sensitive. “We can change how their plate looks and we’re trying to get them to see this,” said Joseph, adding that many immigrant families, who comprise a large share of Open Door’s patients, soon pick up on the unhealthy aspects of the American diet—one that is rife with foods like hamburgers, French fries, soft drinks and

Among many of our families, parents couldn’t just say to their kids ‘go out to the backyard and burn off steam.’ They may not have had that option and their only exercise was walking to school or being in gym class, neither of which, for the most part, existed.”

Childhood obesity has become increasingly prevalent. And evidence shows that the pandemic only made it worse—with pediatricians saying now is a critical time for Americans, who seem to be emerging from the far-reaching effects of COVID-19, to make changes in their family’s lives. This is particularly relevant during September, National Childhood Obesity Month. The issue of childhood obesity is one that pediatricians like Dr. Sharon Joseph and Dr. Mary Rose Puthiyamadam, who work at Open Door Family Medical Center sites in Port Chester and Sleepy Hollow, respectively, address frequently with patients and their families during office visits and in the supermarket tours they lead to educate and encourage parents and children on making healthy eating choices. Studies on Obesity Studies conducted prior to the pan demic, according to the CDC, showed that obesity was already a major problem in America, affecting 19.3 percent of children ages 2 to 19 years. (Compare this to the period between 1976-80, when just 7 percent of children 6 to 11 and 5 percent of adolescents were considered obese.) For children of color, the news was even worse: 25.6 percent of Hispanic children, and 24.2 percent of non-Hispanic Black children were considered obese.

“We were isolated and needed some help,” Lisa recalled. “I called Joan, and she said they were doing some caregiver support groups online. One was the AlzWell Social Club, and a caregiver support group, which got me through the pandemic and created a community around my mom and myself.” Lisa credits the online support programs with helping she and her mother get through the pandemic.

“It was probably 2006,” Lisa LoCascio recalled. “There was some stress going on in the family, and I just noticed some irrational behavior that wasn’t in her usual responses — it did not fit her personality. Then things calmed down, but she did not react well to pressure or stress any longer, while she had always been the rock for our family before.” Problems with paperwork and bill paying eventually made it apparent her mother needed help. “At first, she began to forget where she left things, like her house keys or her pocketbook. Then she would repeat what she had just said. Eventually, mom needed my help with everyday tasks such as remem bering ingredients for cooking her family’s favorite meals or balancing herCarolinecheckbook.”LoCascio said she also knew something was wrong, but initially tried to keep it a secret.

“As a former boutique owner, I was proud of my accomplishments in life when I retired at age 70. But deep down, I knew something was wrong,” she recalled. While Lisa LoCascio said her mother initially re sisted her intervention, she secretly had herself checked and received a clinical diagnosis of “progressive dementia.”Afterthe diagnosis, Lisa turned to the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter for help and had a Care Consultation with Joan Nimmo, one of the licensed social workers on “Joanstaff recommended some wonderful caregiver support groups and social programs that mom and I could sign up for that very same day,” Lisa said. “That was back in early January of 2020. A time when nobody could have predicted the loneliness and isolation of the impending dark season about to envelop all of our lives.” When Caroline’s day care program shut down as a result of COVID, the impact was tough.

“Because of The Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chap ter, I never once felt overwhelmed or alone on my caregiving journey with mom despite the isolation of the pandemic,” she said. “Although we could not meet in person, the support groups I had joined became my lifelines via our Zoom sessions. Mom had fun activities, and I had heart-to-heart phone calls with my fellow caregivers. As an additional benefit, I believe the empowerment my mother gained through the AlzWell Social Club online led her to agree to volunteer to participate in a clinicalCarolinetrial.”agreed that she was grateful for the help they received from the “Thankfully,Association.mydaughter and I turned to the Alzheimer’s Associ ation Hudson Valley Chapter for guidance. Now, I no longer feel ashamed. I’ve even volunteered to try new treatment methods with the hope that it will help uncover the cure of the future. I wish to inspire everyone with Alzheimer’s to ask for help so they, too, may live fully and cherish each moment just like me.”

The ceremony features four flower holders, with each flower’s color representing a different relationship to the disease.

“My mom says as long as we continue to help the Alzheimer’s Association support new research, the future looks bright. As we step closer towards Westchester Coun ty’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, my fellow caregivers and I on team Dare to Care totally agree,” Lisa said. Chairwoman of the Westchester County Board of Legislators Catherine Borgia said: “We as a society are still learning how to speak openly about suicide and the preven tative measures we can take to help those battling depression. Let this memorial be a beacon of hope for those struggling and a place of remembrance for those whom we’ve lost. It will be a physical reminder that no one should suffer alone, grieve alone, or feel alone because in a County like Westchester, you will never truly be alone.”

Westchester holds groundbreaking for The Healing Garden

Commissioner of the Department of Parks, Recreation & Conservation Kathy O’Connor said: “Ridge Road Park in Hartsdale is the perfect setting for The Healing Garden, as it is centrally located in Westchester and free to access all year round. The 236-acre park in our beautiful parks system is ideal for visits by families and friends, and is also the site of NAMI’s annual mental health walk. We hope it will be utilized by anyone who is grieving, and needs a tranquil place to heal from loss.”

Executive Director of NAMI Westchester Marie Considine said: “Family members and friends who mourn and miss a loved one who has died by suicide often have nowhere to go to express their feelings of loss and love. Dedicating a Healing Garden at Ridge Road Park to honor those Westchester residents who have lost their lives to suicide will provide a public outdoor space for people to remember and reflect, while it will provide support, hope and awareness.”

8 THE REVIEW • September 09, 2022 This September, Westchester County is recognizing National Suicide Prevention Month with the creation of a memorial for those who have ended their lives by suicide in Westchester County. By symbolically placing the first plant in the ground, County Executive George Latimer broke ground for The Healing Garden at Ridge Road Park. The tranquil site in Hartsdale will help build awareness of suicide prevention, and create a permanent place for reflection for family members and loved ones of those who ended their lives by suicide. The Healing Garden is the result of a planning committee Latimer appointed in 2021 to provide him with recommendations for memorial site, and is introduced in part nership with the Westchester County Depart ments of Community Mental Health, DCMH, Parks, Recreation and Conservation, NAMI Westchester, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, AFSP. Latimer said: “I am very proud that we will soon be placing the first plant in the ground for The Healing Garden at Ridge Road Park— the result of a promise we made to people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. We wanted to create a peaceful site for reflection for family members and friends, and help address the stigma that is often attached to suicide. I hope that when a survivor of suicide is having a difficult day, they come to this beautiful space at Ridge Road Park and seek comfort and solace in their surroundings. Let this garden help people to ‘heal,’ and rekindle happy memories while they are here.”

Marcus Bertoldo catches a pass during Harrison’s 47-0 win over Cardinal Spellman on Sept. 3. Sports Editor Mike Smith admits the game might not have been an instant classic, but then again, most games aren’t.

A storybook beginning?

Photo/Mike Smith tition—and the energy—is going to be raised when they take on Clarkstown South this week. Every season—regardless of sport—is going to have its ebbs and flows. Learning how to ride those emo tional waves is as an important a lesson as our student athletes are going to learn.

So Week Zero is in the books; let’s move onto the next challenge. Because every game is it’s own story with it’s own narrative. And you never know when you’re going to be in for a surprise. Follow Mike on @LiveMike_SportsTwitter

Sometimes you forget just how many things need to come together to make a sporting event truly engaging. As both a fan and a sports reporter, I’ve attended and covered countless games over the years. The vast majority of these have been forgettable affairs, either due to mismatches or any other number of factors that can rob an event of its excitement. But sometimes, regardless of a final score, an event just has juice. I was reminded of that this past weekend, when I took in two Week Zero varsity football games. By the time the final whistles had sounded, neither game ended up being all that close. But the energy and the atmosphere made for two disparate experiences. On Friday night, I headed across the Hudson River to watch Rye open its season against Corn wall. On paper, it was a compelling enough matchup; Cornwall, long a sectional powerhouse, had lost its crown to Minisink Valley last fall—a Minisink team that was, coinciden tally, beaten by Rye in the state playoffs. Rye, coming off a solid years-long run as one of the top teams in Section I, was coming into the season as a relative un known given the graduation its a talented senior class. The game itself was never as close as it seemed; Rye quieted any doubters with a convincing 43-22 win and there wasn’t much doubt to the outcome early in the second half. But Cornwall did just enough offensively—even in a losing effort— to ensure that even as the Garnets were pulling away, this one still had the electrical charge and the feel of a big Sometimes, game. you aren’t quite as lucky. On Saturday, I caught Rye’s rival—Harrison— in their Week Zero game and the results were, well . . . different. The Huskies hosted a CHSAA team from Cardinal Spellman and it was clear from the outset that this one wasn’t going to be much of a contest. When the dust had finally settled and the game had—merci fully—ended, the Huskies held their opponents to negative offensive yardage as they strolled to a 47-0 victory that somehow wasn’t as close as the score might indicate. You could even sense that the enthusiasm Harrison’s kids came into their season-opener with start to wane as they realize that this Week Zero game wasn’t going to be a test at all. It’s not Harrison’s fault; it’s not Spellman’s fault. Sometimes, that stuff just happens. You hang around sports long enough, sometimes you’re gonna be in for a real clunker. But that’s the great thing about sports too. No matter what happens one day—you’ve gotta be ready and willing to turn the page. While Rye got an early taste of a big-game atmosphere, Harrison knows that the level of compe

Rye tops Dragons in Week Zero game ney, proved that the Garnets have plenty of playmakers who can break a game open.

Miller—making his first varsity start—finished with 336 passing yards and four touchdowns on the night including two connections with Shepherd. Richardson carried the ball 15 times for 159 yards and two scores as Accordingwell. to Miller, while this current group of Garnets is still looking to make a name for itself on the Section I scene, he and his teammates came into Friday night’s game supremely con fident in their abilities. “Although we’re a very new group, we worked well together all summer,” he said. “These are some of my closest friends and I think that shows on the field.”Miller added that the Garnets have been aware that some around Section I questioned how the gradua tion losses would effect the Garnets—who reached the state semifinals in 2021—this year, but that Rye did its best to tune out any noise heading into the season opener.“Ofcourse we hear it, but at the same time, we know that Cornwall is a really good football team and they win every year,’ he said. “So today it was just two teams coming out and playing football.”Ryecoach Dino Garr commended his players for their execution in Week Zero, noting that taking an early September game greatly“Thesechangesyoung men worked very hard to prepare for the game and I think that showed,” said Garr. “You’re losing practice time so you have to work extra hard to get ready and I think they did a tremendous job to get themselves ready.” Rye (1-0) will get its first taste of Section I competi tion next week, when they travel to Brewster to take on the Bears on Sept. 9. Brew ster did not play a Week Zero game last week. “Obviously there are things we can work on; from a personal standpoint, I need to limit the turnovers,” said Miller. “Our defense did a great job getting the ball back in those situations, but I don’t want to put the team in a tough spot.” sports@hometwn.comContact:

By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor

The names and faces may be a little different this year, but one thing that remains constant at Rye is a winning culture. On Sep. 2, a new-look Garnets football team traveled to Cornwall for a Week Zero game against the Section IX Dragons. Despite being hit hard by graduations, Rye doesn’t seem to have lost a step, as they put together a tremendous effort to earn a decisive 43-22 victory in the season-opener.Fromtheoutset, it was clear that Rye will not lack for firepower this year, as the Garnets took an early 14-0 lead over the Dragons with long scoring plays. The first—an 80-yard touchdown run by Tommy Richard son—and the second, a long completion from junior AJ Miller to Rafferty McSwee
