County promotes flu vaccine and COVID booster

Flu season is officially upon us, and County Executive George Latimer and Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Am ler are encouraging residents to get vaccinated to remain healthy and safe.

The Westchester County Health Department will of fer both the flu vaccine and COVID-19 bivalent booster by appointment. Every Monday and Friday in October from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 134 Court St. in White Plains.

The Arc Westchester raises more than $300K

The Arc Westchester Foundation, which is dedicated to increasing public awareness and raising financial resources to support The Arc Westchester’s programs and services for chil dren, teens, and adults with developmental disabilities, recently hosted its 22nd Annual Golfing for Kids Outing and Tennis Mixer at Knollwood CC, Elmsford, NY. One hundred and fifty golfers and tennis players and 230 reception attendees partici pated in the event, which raised more than $300,000 to benefit children with autism, Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities supported by The Arc Westchester’s Children’s School for Early Development (Children’s School). Since its inception, Golfing for Kids has raised more than $3 million for the Children’s School.

This year’s event honored Polly and Ric Peace and the Country Children’s Center (CCC) with the Community Partner Award for their longstanding partnership with the Children’s School and shared commitment to supporting children with developmental disabilities, and their families.

The CCC, founded in 1967, is an independent, 501(c)(3) licensed day care center, providing affordable childcare to all families through a substantial scholarship program. Executive Director, Polly Peace, strongly believes in offering every child the opportunity to experience an environment that is safe and

nurturing, with an academic basis of educational fun. Her com mitment to quality daycare and her desire to create innovative program sites has been a team effort alongside her husband, Ric.

The Arc Westchester’s Children’s School partnership with Ric and Polly began in 1998 when the CCC opened their first site with an inclusion curriculum for children with develop mental disabilities. This innovative model has made a differ ence in the educational and developmental trajectory of many children. By providing a special education preschool program at a critical period of their development, the students have been able to achieve a level of learning and academic success that would not have been possible without their participation in the inclusion program. Together, the Children’s School and the CCC have bettered the lives of countless families and made a lasting impact on their children.

“The Arc Westchester is thankful for its long and success ful partnership with Polly, Ric and the CCC for everything they do to support the children with developmental disabilities enrolled in the Children’s School program,” said Nancy Patota, executive director, The Arc Westchester Foundation. “And, we are so very grateful to all of our sponsors, golfers, tennis play ers and reception attendees who came out today to celebrate our honorees and generously support our mission.”

“As we have seen since over the past two years, COVID-19 infection rates tend to rise during the fall and winter months, and the same goes for transmission of the flu,” Latimer said. “We should all be taking careful precautions to prevent the spread of COVID and the flu, and getting your vaccines will help us do that. It is strong ly recommended to get both the bivalent COVID booster and the flu shot at the same time, to better protect yourself from both illnesses.”

Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler, added, “Com bining vaccines is safe, and it is much more convenient to schedule both at the same time. Children often receive multiple shots at once, and you are much less likely to skip a vaccine if both are given together. Vaccines for flu and COVID-19 offer the best pro tection we have to fight these diseases, so the sooner you get vaccinated, the better.”

Children may receive a COVID-19 vaccine at the same time as they get a flu shot on Friday mornings this month. Bivalent COVID-19 boosters are available for adults and children ages 12 and up who received their most recent COVID-19 vaccine at least two months ago.

Westchester Philharmonic opens for 40th season

After a pandemic-induced two-year hiatus, the Westchester Philharmonic joyfully returns to live performances at the Purchase Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. Conductor Jayce Ogren leads the Phil with guest pianist Ran Dank in works of Beethoven, Mozart, and award-winning composer Jessie Montgomery.

Montgomery’s works have been described as “turbulent, wildly colorful and exploding with life” (The Washington Post), with “...a voice as refreshing as it is, inexplicably, recognizable.” (Chicago Tribune). Commissions and com poser-in-residence appointments with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Orpheus Chamber Ensem ble, St. Paul Chamber Ensemble, and many others have solidified Montgom ery’s standing the in contemporary composing world.

Ogren is the former Assistant Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra and has conducted many of the world’s most prominent orchestras, including the BBC Symphony, Boston Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, the Dallas and San Francisco Symphonies. He conducted New York premieres of Leonard Bernstein’s only opera, A Quiet Place, puppeteer Basil Twist’s The Rite of Spring, both at Lincoln Center;

the world premiere of David Lang’s symphony for a broken orchestra, and is a longtime collaborator of singer/songwriter/composer Rufus Wainwright, conducting the 2012 U.S. premiere of Wainwright’s opera Prima Donna at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Israeli pianist Ran Dank has appeared with virtually ever major orchestra and esteemed conductors throughout the world. Winner of the Naumberg Competition, the New York Times wrote that “Mr. Dank played brilliantly, giving a muscular and virtuosic performance that highlighted the varied

sonic palette of the piece, with its Brahmsian sweep, fiendish octaves and serial techniques.”

Performance takes place in The Recital Hall at The Performing Arts Center, Purchase College, 735 Anderson Hill Road.

Westchester Children’s Association’s Home Visiting Awareness Campaign Quilts Revealed

Last week, the Westchester Children’s Association, WCA, unveiled five quilts from their Hope Quilt Project at the Westchester Children’s Museum at Playland Park in Rye. The year-long project was developed to raise awareness of the importance of early childhood supports.

“Early childhood home visiting programs provide essential services to families to foster the healthy development of babies,” says WCA Executive Director Allison Lake. “But because of the lack of funding, only four percent of new parents and their infants who need the support of trained professionals can partic ipate in these programs. The Hope Quilt Project was created to enlist the community in creating quilt patches with messages and pictures of hope and engaged volunteers and sponsors to support the funding and WCA’s advocacy work.”

“This was a win-win partnership with WCA,” says Nicole Lotto, su pervisor of the Westchester Chil dren’s Museum. “We are delighted to have five of the quilts on display as a testament to the communal effort made to provide extra support to help infants and young parents in the County.”

Donna Green, of the Village Squares Quilters in Scarsdale who completed the quilts, presented them at the event. Speakers includ ed Jewel Williams-Johnson of the Westchester County Board of Leg islators, chair of the health commit tee, John Befus Deputy Commissioner at DSS who spoke on the benefits of home visiting, Cara Stanley from Andrus/Healthy Families, Shannon Von Loon from WJCS and WCA’s Angel Gray.

“Regardless of their Zip codes it’s time to commit and increase access to these programs for both maternal and infant/ child wellbeing, while also ensuring that Westchester youth are healthy, safe and prepared for all of life’s obstacles regard less of their Zip codes or background,” stated Angel Gray Program and Policy Manager of the Westchester Children’s Association.

The quilts will hang in the Children’s Museum at Rye Playland for a few months.

Members of the Village Squares Quil ters include people at all quilting levels who come together to learn from each other via lectures, workshops, and one-on-

one guidance. The organization also distributes hundreds of quilts yearly to nursing homes, vet erans, children, and residents of shel ters, and teaches quilt-making to new mothers at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. For more in formation visit www. villagesquaresquil ters.com.

The Mamaroneck Historical Society is taking a look back at Mamaroneck Village’s downtown shopping district with current and vintage photographs in a new, free online project, the Mamaroneck Avenue Nostalgia Tour.

The air up there

were easy to shake off. Someone was pulling my leg, I thought, there’s no way that this sort of stunt would be pulled out for a high school football contest, even for a celebrated rivalry game.

Whenever Rye and Harrison square off on the football field, there’s never any shortage of pomp and circumstance. As far as regular season contests go, nothing else in Section I can compare to the pageantry of ‘The Game,’ and it’s been that way for decades.

But on Saturday, during the 95th Edition of ‘The Game.’ I got to see something I’d never seen before—something that defied even my lofty expectations—when Rye alumnus Jeff Provenzano hurled himself out of a helicopter and delivered the game ball to officials with a pregame skydive.

But minutes before kickoff, I noticed a chopper hovering high over the field, seemingly con firming those initial rumors that something big was happening.

Now, full disclosure here; when it comes to aerial shows, I’ve always been a “who cares” kinda guy. I’ve seen the Blue Angels in person and while others might be awed by the majesty of these powerful precision flyers, it really did nothing for me.

But on Saturday, watching Provenzano hurl himself from 3,000 feet, was absolutely thrilling, if I’m being perfectly honest.

Obviously, the Rye grad is a pro—a Hollywood stunt coordi

nator, a member of the Red Bull Air Force—so a jump like this is old hat to him. But watching him twist in the air, controlling his dive with short “rocket” bursts that accentuated the drama of the performance, I was complete ly hooked.

And when he touched down on the turf and jogged the game-ball over to the officials, I—like the rest of those in attendance—was ready to applaud.

It was so weird, so dramat ic-yet-silly, you couldn’t help but get sucked in by the moment.

Does this mean I expect more from next year’s game? Maybe someone in a wing-suit gliding down from a suborbital space station to present a game MVP award? Of course not; this was a one-off event that added a smidge more drama to a contest already loaded with it.

But as far as one-off stunts go,

you can’t ask for one much better than this. So here’s to seeing what they come up with next.

Huskies stop streak, rip Rye

All good things must eventually come to an end. That’s something that Rye’s football team found out the hard way on Oct. 8, as they saw a lengthy wining streak against old foe Harrison snapped. On Saturday after noon—in the 95th playing of the ‘The Game’—the Huskies got back in the win column, topping the Garnets 22-7 to earn their first victory since 2012.

Senior Dylan Haines, basking in the glow of Har rison’s win said that Satur day’s victory was built on a deep level of trust between the players and a laser-like focus on the task at hand.

“It means the world to me, but I’m especially glad that I got to do it all with my broth ers,” said Haines. “Everyone here came in with one goal.”

Harrison wasted little time

putting their mark on the game, scoring on the open ing drive as Christian Barchella broke loose for a fourth-down, 42-yard scamper. Though the Garnets would respond in kind, finding the end-zone on a dive by Tommy Richard son, it was all Harrison from thereon out, as the Huskies rattled off 15 unanswered points—with nine points com ing on field goals from Nick Reed—to down their longtime

foes.

Solid play up front was key to the Huskies ability to control the line of scrimmage, and Haines wasted little time praising his line mates for their gritty, physical perfor mance against Rye.

“Our O-line is big, we’re bad, and we want everyone to know it in Section I,” said Haines.

Defensively, Gianlucca Santarelli spearheaded a tre mendous performance that

kept Rye’s explosive offense led by quarterback AJ Miller in check.

The offense was buoyed by the return of starting quarterback Marco Citro, who was cleared to play after suffering a broken collarbone a few weeks ago. Citro and Niko Marinelli both took snaps on the day, with Marinelli finding the end zone on a second half rush of 52 yards.

“Once Marco got that

clearance, you could tell the team was excited and they wanted to back him up,” said head coach Jay Ciraco. “He’s a big asset for us, but we’ve had a next-man-up mentality which has helped.”

After Saturday’s contest, the Huskies and Garnets both find themselves at 5-1 on the year. The Huskies will take on Nyack this Friday while the Garnets will have to contend with undefeated Clarkstown South. For the

Huskies, said Ciraco, the key is just to continue to attack the week the same way the team has been attacking everything this year; with confidence.

“This was the message from day one, we have to start believing in each other,” said Ciraco. “This is a close group and they beat a really good Rye football team today.”
