By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor Just over one year ago, former Immaculate Heart of Mary teacher and coach Edwin “Ted” Gaynor confessed to sexually assaulting two former students in the 1960s, a bombshell admission he made to lawyers while being sued under the Child Victims Act. Those confessions, made public in court documents filed last February, served as a flashpoint for what is now 32 cases filed against the former teacher and his employers, which—despite coronavirus-triggered delays and Gaynor’s reluctance to participate in court proceedings—have widened greatly in scope since the initial claims were made in 2019. California resident David B. Fox was the first to come forward with claims against Gaynor, filing a lawsuit with the Supreme Court of the State of New York on Nov.

7, 2019. In his suit, Fox alleged that Gaynor had used his position as a physical education teacher and coach at IHM in Scarsdale to molest him between the years of 1962 and 1965, the abuse beginning when Fox was just eight years old. Over the course of the next month, 12 more former students filed suits with similar claims against Gaynor, prompting the former teacher to send a Dec. 12 handwritten response to Lowey Dannenberg P.C., the law firm representing the accusers. In the letter, he denied many of the accusations but appeared to admit to molesting two of the plaintiffs, David Pisula and “R.L”, who filed his suit under a pseudonym to protect his anonymity. These early lawsuits were filed predominantly by men who had attended IHM school in the 1960s and allege that Gaynor’s actions were an “open secret” among school-aged children at the time.

Several of the accusers claim to have informed church officials—including then-Monsignor William Little—about Gaynor’s misconduct, only to have their complaints ignored until 1967, when Gaynor was suddenly fired from his post. He would be hired as the youth basketball coach at the Holy Rosary School in Hawthorne shortly thereafter. Gaynor would continue at Holy Rosary throughout the 1970s, during which time he operated several youth sports camps in the area. He returned to coach CYO basketball at IHM in the early 1980s. To date, three accusers have alleged abuse against Gaynor stemming from his time at Holy Rosary while two more claim that Gaynor molested them during his second stint at IHM. Gaynor’s longtime affiliation with area parishes is an integral component of the 32 lawsuits that

have been filed, which allege that the Archdiocese of New York, as well as IHM, Holy Rosary, St. Bernard’s in White Plains and the Sisters of Charity—a Catholic organization that was in charge of staffing at IHM during the 1960s—were negligent in their failure to act on the allegations against Gaynor. Dan O’Hare, a former colleague of Gaynor who took over as IHM’s basketball coach following his dismissal, testified on June 25 that a parish priest had informed him that Gaynor had been let go after admitting to “an incident of impropriety” with a student in 1967. Neither O’Hare nor IHM administrators voiced any concerns when Gaynor was then hired by Holy Rosary and continued to return regularly to the IHM campus as a youth basketball coach. “I didn’t think it was my business,” he said. “No one ever asked me.” As co-defendants in the case, both IHM and the Archdiocese

have sought to distance themselves from Gaynor. In July, both parties filed cross claims against Gaynor, contending that any financial penalties imposed as a result of the court’s decision should fall solely upon the 85-year-old Ossining resident. In August, they also sought to have Gaynor’s written confessions stricken from the record on the grounds that they would prove prejudicial. The motion was denied by New York Supreme Court Associate Justice Hon. Steven M. Jaeger. Gaynor himself has been reluctant to speak to the court under oath, a matter complicated by shutdowns caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Initially, Gaynor was scheduled to be deposed by March 27, but the pandemic prompted a two-month adjournment beginning on March 16. When the trial resumed, Gaynor refused to appear—either in person or remotely—for a deposition. He ignored a July 2 subpoena compelling him to testify on Aug. 7 and another, delivered

on Nov. 23, that ordered him to appear by Dec. 3. The judge has twice found Gaynor to be in contempt of court for his refusal to appear. On Nov. 20, he levied a $250 a day fine against the defendant until Gaynor agrees to be deposed. Retired Mount Vernon Detective Paul Puccini, who served Gaynor with the subpoenas, wrote in an Oct. 12 affidavit that Gaynor declared that he would refuse to comply with the court order. “Mr. Gaynor stated to me that ‘they can put me in a dungeon or whatever,’” Puccini’s affidavit read. “I can’t be there on any date and I can’t show up.” Counsel for the plaintiffs have filed a motion with Jaeger requesting that, should Gaynor continue to ignore the court order, he be placed under civil arrest by the Westchester County Sherriff’s office on Jan. 14 and be held in custody until the deposition is completed. Healthfirst donates 150K meals to Feeding Westchester

Healthfirst, one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit health insurers, has made a generous donation to Feeding Westchester. The funds will help Westchester County’s largest nonprofit hunger relief organization provide nutritious meals for nearly 40,000 families (or 150,000 people) this holiday season by stocking their Mobile Food Pantry and Fresh Market Program with more than 88,000 pounds of food. “The economic crisis caused by the pandemic has led to devastating consequences for those who were already struggling,” said Pat Wang, president and chief executive officer of Healthfirst. “For many of our members, including one million Medicaid clients, food insecurity has always been an issue. COVID-19 has dramatically worsened the situation and laid bare how many of our neighbors lack the basic necessities to sustain a healthy life.” Errol Pierre, senior vice president of State Programs at Healthfirst, said, “Facing hunger is very stressful. It impacts a person’s emotional and mental well-being

and can weaken the body making it more vulnerable to illness and worsen chronic conditions. We felt it was important to support Feeding Westchester to help address this fundamental need because it is more important than ever that people stay strong. No one should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.” Healthfirst is committed to reducing health disparities across its membership and member communities through the work it does every day. This holiday season, the company is also supporting healthy communities by helping those struggling to put food on the table. “Healthfirst will continue its commitment to addressing the nutrition needs of New Yorkers as part of our ongoing efforts to battle disparities and to help improve health outcomes in the communities we serve,” Wang said. “We enthusiastically support the efforts of Feeding Westchester, which is dedicated to combating food insecurity where many of our members live and work.”

Feeding Westchester’s network of nearly 300 partner agen-

cies and programs throughout the county are serving between

260,000-300,000 residents who are hungry each month—more than twice as many as preCOVID-19. The nonprofit has distributed nearly 20.4 million pounds of food, or 17 million meals, in the last year compared to 10.1 million pounds in 2019. “Many families and individuals right here in Westchester County are facing unprecedented challenges this holiday season,” said Karen C. Erren, president & CEO of Feeding Westchester. “From those who are struggling to make the holidays special for their children, to seniors who are spending the holidays alone, the impact of hunger is pervasive in our community. This generous donation from Healthfirst will help provide 150,000 nutritious meals to those in need throughout our communities.” Feeding Westchester is located at 200 Clearbrook Road, Elmsford, NY 10523. Consumer Protection warns against Covid-19 vaccine scams

The Westchester County Department of Consumer Protection is warning all Westchester residents to be vigilant for Covid-19 vaccine scams as we enter the next phase of the pandemic. “There are vaccine scams out there,” Westchester County Executive George Latimer said. “People may solicit you, may sound professional and look for money and information from

you to get a vaccine. Don’t fall for it and don’t pay attention to it.” “If you get a call, text, email or even someone knocking on door claiming they can get you early access to the vaccine, hang up, delete or close the door—stop all communication immediately,” Consumer Protection Director Jim Maisano said. “It’s a scam every time.”

“Also, beware of scammers or even salespeople offering to sell you unnecessary products, treatments or medicines to prevent the virus—always check with your doctor first,” Maisano said. If you are contacted by someone looking to sell you early access to the vaccine, contact Westchester Consumer Protection at 995-2155 or at ConPro@westchestergov.com. (Submitted)

Tips for Westchester residents tricks scammers are using

• Vaccine is expected to be free. • There are no sign-up lists for vaccine. • You can’t pay to get your vaccine earlier. • Medicare or Social Security won’t be calling you about getting your vaccine (scammers often act like they are calling from government agencies). • You don’t need to give out SSN, credit card or bank info before you are able to get vaccine.

The Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions continued their holiday tradition of bell ringing for the Salvation Army. On Saturday, Dec. 19, eight Lions rang bells on Mamaroneck Avenue in Mamaroneck and on Palmer Ave-

nue in Larchmont. The latter location was adjacent to the Lions Holiday Christmas Tree, which was part of the Village and Chamber of Commerce tree decorating competition (won rightfully by the Girl Scouts.

In a year of hardship and our communities coming together in response, the number of donors and the amount increased significantly. Thank you Larchmont and Mamaroneck. (Submitted)

Women’s Advisory Board holds first virtual town hall The Westchester County Women’s Advisory Board, WAB, held its first ever virtual town hall event—entitled “Staying Sane in a Pandemic”—aimed at providing helpful answers and resources to Westchester’s women during these unprecedented times. The session began with a welcome by County Executive George Latimer, who thanked the WAB for hosting the important event. “This event is another example of the innovative work being done by Westchester County to reach residents with the vital information they need during a

time when traditional ways of reaching residents are not accessible,” Latimer said. “Congratulations to the WAB on their successful first event.” The event was moderated by Nicole Benjamin JD, LMSW and included presentations by Larchmont Mamaroneck Counseling Center Clinical Director Alan Dienstag, Director of the Office for the Aging in the City of Yonkers Kelly Chiarella and Soledad Soriano-Kaplan, a certified stress management specialist, certified yoga instructor and certified aromatherapist. The presenters focused on topics including self-care, under-

standing that it’s “okay not to be okay” and resources for parents of children also struggling to cope with the changes this pandemic had brought. Robi Schlaff, county Office for Women, OFW, director, said, “The OFW and WAB are committed to providing women resources they need—especially in these tumultuous times. This is the first in a series of town halls hosted by the WAB and we hope you will join us for the rest of these important meetings.” More information on the OFW can be found on the links below or by calling 995-5972. Eight new police officers were sworn into the ranks of the Westchester County Police ON Dec. 14 by County Executive George Latimer and Public Safety Commissioner Thomas A. Gleason.

Eight new police officers were sworn into the ranks of the Westchester County Police last week by County Executive George Latimer and Public Safety Commissioner Thomas A. Gleason. The eight officers have previous police experience and transferred to the Department of Public Safety from three municipal police departments in Westchester. The new officers are: Clinton Boxhill, Abdu Lawrence, Conrado Builes Ramirez, Alberto Ramos, Rasau Romeo, Nicholas Smith, Thomas Hagan and Kristin Reilly. “This is a diverse group of officers who bring significant experience and talents to the Westchester County Police,” Latimer said. “We are pleased to have them in our ranks and I wish them much success in their careers with the County Police.” Latimer also noted that a civil service exam for police officer positions is tentatively planned for May 2021, but might have to be delayed because of Covid-19 concerns. He encouraged those who are interested in a police career to watch for announcements from the county early next year. The civil service exam, administered by the Westchester

County Department of Human Resources, is used for hiring new police officers for the county police, the police departments in the cities of Rye and Peekskill, and all town and village departments in Westchester. “You must take the civil service exam to become eligible to be hired as a police officer and be admitted to the Westchester County Police Academy,” Latimer said. We will be working hard to publicize this opportunity and will hold recruitment events across Westchester to try to ensure that a diverse group of people take the exam. We want our local police departments to reflect the entire Westchester community—and that begins by having a diverse group of applicants take the test.” When exam details are finalized, the county will post the information on westchestergov.com and its social media channels. To receive notifications of all upcoming civil service exams, people can sign up to receive email notifications at https://exams.westchestergov.com/webexam/emailSubscription/subscribe.htm. As for the county’s newest officers, Gleason said they have been assigned to the uniformed

Patrol Services Division and will begin field training immediately. During field training, each officer is teamed up with a Field Training Officer to become familiar with county police policies, procedures and all patrol posts, including parkway patrols, County parks and facilities, the Westchester County Airport and municipal precincts in Mount Kisco and Cortlandt. The new officers will be given a permanent patrol assignment upon completion of their field training, Gleason said. The eight new officers were sworn in Monday, Dec. 14, following a promotion ceremony at the Westchester County Police Academy attended by Latimer and Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins. Promoted from sergeant to lieutenant were Vincent Antonecchia, Robert Ess and Anthony Morizio. Promoted from police officer to sergeant were Kyle McCarrick, Isai Moreira, Francis Pagliuca and Mark Shkreli. “I welcome our newest officers to the WCPD and congratulate those we have promoted,” Gleason said. “We are expecting great things from all of them.” (Submitted)

23 firefighters graduate from county fire academy Twenty-three recruits from seven Westchester fire departments graduated on Dec. 19 from the Westchester County Career Chiefs Fire Academy. The new firefighters were awarded their certificates during a graduation ceremony held at the Department of Emergency Services, DES. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, a scaled-down ceremony was conducted and

streamed live for family members and others to observe. The ceremony itself was limited to the recruits, chiefs or commissioners from the seven departments, a few dignitaries and members of the Fire Training Division at DES. County Executive George Latimer addressed the graduates and noted that they were first fire recruits to contend with the

Covid-19 pandemic during their training. Two weeks of their 17-week training were conducted virtually and other protocols were put in place to ensure social distancing and safety. He told the graduates that they reminded him of his late fatherin-law, who had had been a career firefighter. “I see in you what I saw in him—a certain discipline and a certain ability to put yourself out

there physically, mentally, emotionally to deal with things that the rest of us don’t deal with and aren’t trained to do,” Latimer said. “We turn to you for those things.” Latimer noted that the graduates all successfully passed the National Certification exams for Firefighter I, Firefighter II and Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations. They also all successfully completed the required Candidate Physical Agility Test. “Firefighter training is both

academically and physically demanding,” Latimer said. “I congratulate the graduates for all they accomplished at the Career Chiefs Fire Academy.” Chief James Seymour of the Scarsdale Fire Department also addressed the graduates and congratulated them for persevering in a unique training environment. “On behalf of the Westchester County Career Fire Chiefs Association, I would like to first thank all of the staff for another successful academy especially during these unprecedented times. I would like to congratulation the class 01-2020 and wish them a long, successful, healthy career,” Seymour said. Richard G. Wishnie, acting commissioner at DES, thanked DES staff and the instructors from numerous fire departments who trained the new firefighters during the 17-week Fire Academy program. “The fire service and the staff here at DES are committed to providing the most rigorous training possible to prepare firefighters for the job that is ahead. We know these probationary firefighters are prepared to meet the challenges that come with being a firefighter today,” Wishnie said. (Submitted)

A year to forget LIVE MIKE Mike Smith

By just about any metric you want to use, 2020 was an unbelievably tough year. Between the political strife that threatened to tear our nation apart at the seams and the global pandemic that claimed millions of lives and revealed the fragility of the institutions we’ve long taken for granted, there haven’t been a whole lot of bright spots for us over the last 12 months. Even outlets that we normally use to escape the realities of everyday life—including sports—were impacted, shut down for months at a time as we attempted to ride out this coronavirus storm. But just because this wasn’t the easiest year for us doesn’t mean there weren’t plenty of highlights in the high school sports world. 2020 started promising enough; high school athletics were humming along and some of our local athletes were starting to distinguish themselves on the area’s biggest stage. On the ice, we saw two of our own in Rye and ETBE hockey teams blaze their way to the Section I finals on the hard work of two outstanding netminders, the

Garnets’ Anabelle Thomas and the Eagles’ JP Rosabella. The Garnets were able to win their championship tilt against John Jay, while ETBE fell to Suffern in a game that saw Rosabella make an astounding 53 saves. It didn’t matter what teams you were rooting for during the playoffs, if you were a fan of topnotch goaltending, these games were can’t-miss affairs. Over on the basketball side of things, the Westchester County Center once again served as the host for Section I’s prestigious Championship Week. After a brief hiatus during which games were played elsewhere, going back to the County Center— and seeing Rye’s boys win their first section championship since 1989—just had a feeling of normalcy to it. Of course, that sense of normalcy was soon to be interrupted. Championship Week coincided with the first cluster of Covid-19 cases popping up in Westchester. We had no way of knowing just how impactful this virus would be, but there were already grumblings of potential shutdowns and quarantines, and by the next weekend our worst fears were realized. This virus was deadlier than anything we had previously dealt with in our lifetimes and we’d spend the

next few months largely confined to our houses, no in-person schooling, no spring sports season, no end in sight. High School athletes never gave up hope, however. Over the summer we saw our youths participate in zoom workouts with teammates, petition state officials to allow a fall season and feverishly follow any news about what their sports futures would look like. And while we didn’t get a full slate of fall athletics—football being an obvious casualty of pandemic guidelines—we got a memorable one, as masked teams took the field for a tumultuous, yet ultimately successful campaign. But now as the year is about to end, we’re right back where we started. Cases are spiking, states are shutting down, and the future of winter sports like basketball and hockey are up in the air once again. The vaccines are being administered but we still have a few more hurdles to clear before everything is back to normal. So let’s hang in there, keep the faith, and hope that 2021 is a little bit sunnier than the year we just had. Because, quite frankly, I don’t see how it could be worse.
