Health Dept. to offer COVID vaccines at senior events The Westchester County Department of Health will be offering the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at all upcoming Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS) Salute to Seniors events. Residents 50 years of age and older are eligible to receive the vaccine. In order to receive a shot, you must provide verification that four months has passed since your last COVID-19 vaccination. If you are receiving your first vaccination you will need to get your second at a local pharmacy or clinic near you. Seniors must bring their vaccination cards to the event if they are
interested in receiving the vaccine. Free COVID-19 test kits and hand sanitizers will also be distributed on a first come, first serve basis. “If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, we have learned the best way to protect ourselves and our families is through vaccinations,” County Executive George Latimer said. “We also know that our seniors are among the most vulnerable populations for this virus, and getting your vaccine can prevent serious illness or even death. I encourage all of our seniors to take advantage of this great opportunity and get vaccinated by one of our medical professionals at a
Salute to Seniors event.” “I want everyone to understand, especially our senior community, that getting your vaccine is just as important now as it ever was,” said Dr. Sherlita Amler, county Health Department commissioner. “We have watched thousands of our loved ones suffer from this disease since the onset of the pandemic, and getting your vaccine is the best way for us to address this virus head on. Please remember your vaccine card, and consider getting your vaccine with the Health Department at a Salute to Seniors event in May.” (Submitted)

report marks the beginning of ongoing and important work in charting an anti-racist path forward. NPW is committed to leading the charge,” she said. Dr. Alexandria Connally, a race equity consultant, was hired in August 2021 to continue the work of charting an anti-racist path forward at the board of directors level. “We know from data and the lived experiences of people who are BIPOC, that societal injustices have encroached on nonprofit agencies,” Connally said. “It is important to address these injustices at the structural level to ensure these agencies serve their constituents without bias.” The report is the result of a series of initiatives, programs, panel discussions, expertise and lived experiences of presenters and community input over a multi-year period in the racial equity space in Westchester. It reflects the incredible partnerships, people and organizations that have contributed to the work that will continue beyond today. (Submitted)

Nonprofit Westchester has released a report “Taking Action: Charting an Anti-Racist Path Forward in Westchester’s Nonprofit Sector”. The groundbreaking report provides the framework for nonprofits to create organizations that are structured to view all decisions from a racial lens. It is not about simply having a diverse staff. The report provides four key recommendations with a focus on designing the infrastructure within organizations to have ongoing, lasting progress toward being anti-racist. Supported by the Nonprofit Westchester Board of Directors, Jan Fisher, the executive director of Nonprofit Westchester has taken the lead, working with the YWCA of White Plains and Central Westchester among other key partners, to guide the redesign of the internal structure of nonprofit organizations. “While Nonprofit Westchester along with our partners have been working on this initiative for more than two years, the release of the

Latimer launches new child care scholarship Recognizing that affordable child care is essential for children, families and the economy to thrive, Westchester County has partnered with the Child Care Council of Westchester to create the Westchester Works Scholarship for resident families who have not previously qualified for child care financial assistance. Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “I know all too well the struggles and hard decisions families face when they have to answer the age old question, ‘who is going to watch the children when we go to work?’ Increasing the eligibility will allow more parents to go to work with peace of mind knowing their children are safe and in good hands,” Latimer said. “These parents will better be able to provide for their children and themselves. Supporting and increasing funding for childcare is the right thing to do for working families – period.” Latimer’s 2022 budget contains a total of $38.9 million for child-
care subsidies. An increase of $10.2 million from 2021 levels of $28.7 million. “I began my career in politics advocating for affordable child care when I first became a mother,” said Board of Legislators Chairwoman Catherine Borgia. “Adding this funding to the 2022 budget was a high point of my career. I am overjoyed today to see this program coming to fruition, knowing that it will make a huge difference in the lives of so many families across Westchester. We know that early child care leads to lifelong positive outcomes in behavior, education, and functionality. Instituting programs like this is a true example of a legacy that outlives you. This will improve the lives and futures of Westchester residents.” For many families, child care is often the biggest bill in the household – but this new scholarship provides relief. • A family of two was previously ineligible if household income was $34,841.
• Now, that same family can have a gross income of up to $60,674 and qualify for the Westchester Works Child Care Scholarship. • A family of three can earn up to $74,950, and a family of four, up to $89,226. “These funds have immediately increased access to safe, quality child care,” said Kathy Halas, Child Care Council of Westchester executive director. “Long term, fewer Westchester families will struggle to meet basic needs, more children will reach their potential, and Westchester will be safer and healthier.” Scholarship applications are being accepted as of April 1. To qualify for the scholarship or a child care subsidy, parents/guardians must be working and meet income eligibility. Questions? Email scholarships@ cccwny.org, or call 761-3456 x140. Employers are also encouraged to reach out to the Council to obtain information and resources to distribute to employees (Submitted)

Savvy Senior How to Get Help as an Elder Orphan Dear Savvy Senior, I need to find someone honest and reliable to look after my estate, health and long-term care when I’m no longer able to do it myself. I’m a 67-year-old recent widow with no children and one sibling I rarely talk to. Any suggestions? Solo Ager Dear Solo, This is big concern for millions of older Americans who don’t have a spouse, children or other family they can depend on to watch out for their well-being. While there’s no one solution to this issue, here are some tips and resources that can help you plan ahead. Essential Documents If you haven’t already done so, your first step, before choosing a reliable decision maker, is to prepare a basic estate plan of at least four essential legal documents. This will protect yourself and make sure you’re wishes are carried out if you become seriously ill or when you die. These essential documents include: a “durable power of attorney” that allows you to designate someone to handle your financial matters if you become incapacitated; an “advanced health care directive” that includes a “living will” that tells your doctor what kind of care you
want to receive if you become incapacitated, and a “health care power of attorney,” which names a person you authorize to make medical decisions on your behalf if you’re unable to; and a “will” that spells out how you’d like your property and assets distributed after you die. It also requires you to designate an “executor” to ensure your wishes are carried out. To prepare these documents your best option is to hire an attorney, which can cost anywhere between $500 and $2,000. Or, if you are interested in a do-it-yourself plan, Quicken WillMaker & Trust 2022 ($199, Nolo.com) and LegalZoom. com ($179) are some top options. Choosing Decision Makers & Helpers Most people think first of naming a family member as their power of attorney for finances and health care, or executor of their will. If, however, you don’t have someone to fill those roles, you may want to ask a trusted friend or associate but be sure to choose someone that’s organized and younger than you who will likely be around after you’re gone. Also be aware that if your choice of power of attorney or executor lives in another state, you’ll need to check your state’s law to see if it imposes any special requirements.
If, however, you don’t have a friend or relative you feel comfortable with, you’ll need to hire someone who has experience with such matters. To find a qualified power of attorney or executor for your will, contact your bank, a local trust company or an estate planning attorney. If you need help locating a pro, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA.org) is a great resource that provides online directory to help you find someone in your area. Another resource that can help you manage and oversee your health and long-term care needs as they arise, and even act as your health care power of attorney, is an aging life care manager. These are trained professionals in the area of geriatric care who often have backgrounds in nursing or social work. To search for an expert near you, visit AgingLifeCare.org. Or, if you need help with bill paying and other financial/insurance/tax chores there are professional daily money managers (see AADMM. com) that can help. Aging life care managers typically charge between $75 and $200 per hour, while hourly rates for daily money managers range between $75 and $150. It’s also important to note that if
you don’t complete the aforementioned legal documents and you become incapacitated, a court judge may appoint a guardian to make decisions on your behalf. That means
the care you receive may be totally different from what you would have chosen for yourself. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Nor-
man, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book. (Submitted)

Emerson students participate in theater production Halle Hart, of Larchmont, and Madeline Hanley, of Bronxville, participated in Emerson Stage’s production of “Three Romances for the Unwell and Otherwise.” Written by Elena Freck, BFA ‘22 and directed by Joe Antoun, it was performed March 24-27, in the Greene Theater at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Each year, students submit original written plays to be selected for its NewFest Rod Parker Fellowship Award, and the recipient receives a fellowship and stipend. This original play is loosely based on the relationships between four 19th-century German composers, and explores the struggles of indie musicians in modern day Los Angeles, finding their way in their career, as well as
their relationships. Hart is majoring in Stage and Production Management and is a member of the Class of 2025. Emerson Stage and the Department of Performing Arts are where the next generation of actors, designers, stage managers, technicians, administrators, and educators work alongside distinguished faculty, professional staff, and visiting artists to bring skills learned in the classroom to vibrant life on stage. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, opposite the historic Boston Common and in the heart of the city’s Theatre District, Emerson College educates individuals who will solve problems and change the world through engaged leadership in communication and the arts, a mission
informed by liberal learning. The college has 3,780 undergraduates and 670 graduate students from across the U.S. and 50 countries. Supported by state-of-the-art facilities and a renowned faculty, students participate in more than 90 student organizations and performance groups. New Rochelle launches ARPA website To increase public awareness of and engagement in the process through which the city of New Rochelle will utilize American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, the city has created a dedicated website www.newrochellearpa.org. The site will be used for information and serve as a portal for funding applications. The $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, signed into law on March 11, 2021, provided $350 billion in emergency funding for state, local, territorial and tribal governments for economic relief and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. New Rochelle will re-
ceive $37 million in two tranches. New Rochelle’s website, created by the city’s consultant, provides detailed information on the ARPA as well as planned uses of the local funds available. “The ARPA provides unprecedented support to communities like New Rochelle, and we are determined to utilize this valuable funding to achieve a comprehensive recovery, with a special focus on strengthening our social, physical, and economic infrastructure,” said Mayor Noam Bramson. “This new website offers detailed information to the public and a user-friendly access point for stakeholders and part-
ners seeking grants. We encourage eligible agencies and businesses to participate in this important opportunity.” As part of the first tranche, city businesses and institutions with a current tax-exempt status as a public charity under section 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) or (19) of the Internal Revenue Code, listed on the IRS Master File are invited to apply for funding. Public informational meetings on the process for submitting an application will be held on two dates this month: April 18 at 6 p.m. and April 21 at 2 p.m. at New Rochelle City Hall, 515 North Ave., New Rochelle. Larchmont Avenue Church holds rummage sale Larchmont Avenue Church is excited to announce that after a 2-year hiatus due to COVID, their rummage sale is back. The sale is scheduled for April 28-30 at Larchmont Avenue Church, located at 60 Forest Park Ave. The LAC Rummage Sale is well known for its selection of clothing, linens, housewares, furniture, jewelry and collectibles. Shopping hours are Thursday, April 28 from 4 p.m.-8 p.m., Friday, April 29 from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. The rummage sale is important to both the church and the local community in many ways. It provides low-income families and those impacted by last year’s flooding, an opportunity to purchase quality items at low prices. It also supports the church’s mission as a newly certified “Earth Care Congregation” to care for the earth by facilitating
ways to reuse and repurpose items that might otherwise be thrown away. And, most importantly, the funds raised support grants that the church’s Church and Community Committee make to local mission partners, including: • The Larchmont-Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force (Food Pantry) • The Community Resource CenterHOPE Community Services • The Sharing Shelf • The Larchmont Mamaroneck Community Counseling Center • At Home on the Sound • STEM Alliance Summer Co-Op Enrichment • Meals on Wheels • Washingtonville Housing Alliance • The Bridge Fund • Bridges to Community Over the past two months, these community partners have participated in the church’s worship services and shared information about their work with the congregation,
which led up to a Day of Service on March 12. Fifty Larchmont Avenue Church members participated in the Day of Service by volunteering with various projects to support these organizations. Projects included activities such as sorting clothing at The Sharing Shelf, packing spice bags for the Larchmont Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force, making welcome signs for the Co-Op Camp and cleaning and organizing at both HOPE and the Community Resource Center. Larchmont Avenue Church is dedicated to serving the community and specifically their mission partners and encourages everyone to join their efforts by coming to the rummage sale. Hard to stay mad LIVE MIKE Mike Smith
Maybe I’m a soft touch, but I just can’t stay mad at baseball. Sure, Major League Baseball, as an entity, gives us plenty of reasons to be sore; and during off-seasons—especially like the ones we just had—it’s nearly impossible for even the most ardent fan to begin to rethink his or her relationship to the game. From the rampant greed on display—not only in the lockout discussions, but in the rank opportunism shown by teams in movie large swaths of games from free television to pay-to-play streaming sites—it becomes tough to defend a sport that has shown its fans time and again that they are replaceable. I can rant and rave about all the problems facing the game until I’m blue in the face, but ultimately, it doesn’t matter. Once opening day rolls around, I’m hooked again. For a baseball fan, even an in-
creasingly cynical one like me, it’s nearly impossible not to get sucked back into the swing of things once that first pitch of the season is thrown. The familiar rhythms of the game are the ultimate balm, a cure-all for the sports’ many warts. Tuning in last week to watch Shohei Ohtani pull double-duty or Albert Pujols don his Cardinals’ uniform for one last go-around, all of my criticisms of the game fell by the wayside. I was just happy to have baseball back. There’s something comforting about having the sport back; For the next six months, I know that I can turn on the television on any random night and catch a game and fall into the patter of the announcers punctuated by the —increasingly rare—crack of the ball off the bat. I don’t even need to be paying attention seventy percent of the time, just having a game on in the background has become a nightly tradition for me over the years. It’s always a welcome addition to my routine. But I worry that my inability to hold Major League Baseball accountable for its faults is exactly
what Commissioner Rob Manfred is relying on. There are numerous problems with the game, both on and off the field—notably pace of play—but league executives know that they’ve got what amounts to a captive audience. They can institute as many changes as they want and they know that, for better or worse, a still demographic will still be tuning in—at least until we run out of cash ponying up for the various streaming services carrying the games. I wish I was a more discerning fan, but alas, I’m trapped. So take my money, MLB. Make me sign up for Peacock and AppleTV, make me reach into my pocket to make sure I can watch my Red Sox blow lead after lead in games that last upwards of four hours. You’ve got a fan for for life and that’s probably not changing anytime soon. But once my ilk is gone, you’ve got a lot of things to figure out. But for your sake and mine, lets hope that’s not for a while.

In a battle between two teams who came into Wednesday’s game with perfect records, the Quakers managed to best the Garnets, utilizing a late surge to pull away and get a 13-8 victory. With the score tied at 7-7 midway through the second half, Greeley closed the game out with a blistering 6-1 surge to remain unbeaten. Rye’s balanced attack was led by three players—Maren Wydra, Ellie Hedges and Mackenzie Chimento— who all tallied two goals on the day.

Rye’s bats came to life on Friday, as the Garnets put up 23 runs against the Wolves in just five innings of play. Millie Brooks led the offensive explosion, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and a stolen base. Aside from Brooks, the Garnets had four other players record multi-hit days. In the circle, Erin Ball and Zoe Lien, collaborated on the shutout, combining for nine strikeouts on the afternoon.

The Garnets continued their winning ways on Friday, topping Nyack 8-2 to pick up their sixth victory of the season. Derek Woods’ terrific performance on the mound kept Nyack’s bats at bay, as Woods went six innings, scattering three hits, and striking out eight batters. Tillman Ball collected two hits on the day and drove in two runs. Rye has jumped out to a 6-0 record thus far, outscoring its opponents 47-13 in that span. They will face Lakeland on April 18 in a rematch of the season opener, which the Garnets won 7-2. -Reporting by Mike Smith

Taking on White Plains in a rainsoaked affair on Thursday, the Garnets gutted out a tough win, topping the Tigers 7-2. Rye’s defense was stellar on the afternoon, as they held the visitors scoreless through the first 27 minutes of regulation. Offensively, the Garnets were paced by Brendan O’Bryne, who found the net three times to record a hat trick.

After flooding from Thursday’s storm caused flooding on the Rye campus, Saturday’s tilt between Rye and Connecticut power Ridgefield was moved to the Tigers’ home stadium. The Tigers demonstrated why they are among the top teams in the nation, topping Rye 15-4. Rye mustered 25 shots on goal, but Ridgefield goalie Matthew Shepard proved tough to beat, recording 21 saves on the afternoon. Rye’s offense was led by Kian McCarthy, who managed two of the Garnets’ four goals. Tanner Howson and Andrew Keller supplied the other scores for the visitors. Rye (2-2) will look to bounce back this weekend, when they travel up to Yorktown to take on the Huskers in a rematch of the 2021 Section I finals. The Garnets are hoping that the imminent return of attacker
Maren Wydra brings the ball up the field against Horace Greeley. Wydra was one of three Garnets to find the net twice.
