White Plains Hospital named a ‘Best Hospital in America’ White Plains Hospital has been named one of the country’s Best Hospitals in the inaugural Money (formerly Money Magazine) national rankings. The hospital is one of just 148 in the nation—as well as one of only four in New York state, and the only hospital in Westchester County—to be included. “It is an honor to be listed among the best hospitals in the country,” said White Plains Hospital President and CEO Susan Fox. “At White Plains Hospital, quality has always been our North Star and patient safety is paramount to everything we do. In addition to our focus on quality, we are committed to providing advanced programs and services to the community, such as our new cardiac surgery and neurointerventional surgery programs.” Money partnered with the Leapfrog Group, a health care nonprofit that has been vetting hospitals for more than 20

years, to evaluate more than 2,200 hospitals for inclusion in the inaugural Best Hospitals List. Data from 39 performance measures reported in Leapfrog’s 2021 hospital survey was reviewed across seven different categories, including inpatient care management, adult and pediatric complex surgeries, pediatric care, medication safety, maternity care, outpatient procedures and infections. In addition, hospitals included in the Money Best Hospitals in America List must have earned an “A” letter grade on the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assessment for fall 2021. In May, White Plains Hospital received its 7th consecutive “A” from the Leapfrog Group for patient safety. The hospital remains the only health care facility in Westchester County, and one of only 19 hospitals in New York state, to receive the highest possible rating of “A.”

In what is an innovative public-private partnership, developers Wilder Balter Partners and LMXD and the city of New Rochelle begun construction on a $4 million transformation of Anderson Plaza and Anderson Street in downtown New Rochelle that is expected to be a bellwether for the city’s continued evolution as an inclusive, forward-thinking walkable city. Anderson Street is a one-way thoroughfare between North Avenue and LeCount Place in New Rochelle’s Downtown Overlay Zone, and Anderson Plaza is an adjoining, underutilized public open space. The renovated plaza will provide a versatile public retail corridor with bubbler play fountains, new seating options, refreshed landscaping, and a café building to help activate the space with complementary retail or local services. Roadway reconfigurations and regrading will allow traffic on Anderson Street to be controlled so the plaza and roadway can be temporarily pedestrianized and used as a welcoming outdoor event space for farmers’ markets, festivals, and live performances. With this project underway, and after three years of comprehensive planning with the renowned design firm Starr Whitehouse, the transformative project will enrich the public realm, enhance walkability and neighborhood vibrancy, and improve the quality-of-life of residents, while increasing foot traffic and activity. By creating a neighborhood focal point and adding value for the community, downtown residents, shoppers, and workers, this project will create an increasingly attractive environment for transit-oriented development in New

Rochelle. At the ceremonial groundbreaking on July 21, visitors were able to catch an early glimpse of what the plaza will look like through VR technology using NRVR, the city’s community engagement platform. The construction on Anderson Plaza is expected to be completed in early 2023. “The new Anderson Plaza renovation illustrates New Rochelle’s commitment to pedestrian-friendly urban design and to ensuring that economic development results in a stronger community with a higher quality of life for all of us.” said Mayor Noam Bramson. “I look forward to this enhanced space becoming a hub of positive activity that contributes to the health and vitality of our central business district and of our city as a whole.” Anderson Plaza is a product of extensive public-private negotiations as a result of the Downtown’s revitalization efforts. Other notable community amenities that have resulted from public-private partnerships include the Black Box Theater space at 595 Main St., and a community and gallery space to be operated by The Lincoln Park Conservancy, Inc. at 393 Huguenot St. “New Rochelle is a prime example of what busy New Yorkers dream of—everything young professionals or a growing family could want, just outside of New York City,” said Adam Salgado, Development Commissioner for the City of New Rochelle. “The redevelopment of Anderson Plaza is just one example of how we invest in our community and offer a welcoming, engaging, quality space for our neighbors.”

Extreme heat posts risks for people with dementia

THE REVIEW • July 29, 2022 • 3

Today, there are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, including approximately 40,000 people in the Hudson Valley.

As the temperatures rise, extreme heat can have a significant impact on everyone’s safety, but they can be especially stressful and confusing for individuals with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Alzheimer’s disease causes a number of changes in the brain and body that may affect their safety, including changes in sensitivity to temperatures. Today, there are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, including approximately 40,000 people in the Hudson Valley. Taking measures to plan ahead for weather changes, like extreme heat, can prevent injuries and help a person with dementia feel more relaxed and less overwhelmed. “People living with Alzheimer’s and other dementia can be vulnerable during extreme weather because their judgment may be impaired and they may be unable to communicate discomfort,” said Meg Boyce, vice president of Programs and Services for the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter. “It’s really important to take extra precautions with these individuals when there is extreme heat or other excessive weather conditions.” The Alzheimer’s Association is offering important safety tips for caregivers and families facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias to prepare for the hot summer months ahead: • Make a plan. Family and friends should prepare accordingly and make plans to regularly check-in on a person living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias during extreme heat. Arrange alternative plans for cooler spaces, if air conditioning is unavailable, and dress in loose, light clothing. • Pay attention at night. Keep people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias cool by using fans and keeping the air conditioning on. At night, low temperatures can still exceed 75 degrees with little fluctuation in humidity levels, making for difficult and

exacerbating sleeping conditions, heightened anxiety and increased agitation. • Prepare for behavioral challenges. Research shows that heat can increase agitation and confusion in people. Try to remove behavioral triggers by addressing the person’s physical needs related to the heat, then tending to their emotional needs. • Stay hydrated. Increased water intake is essential to maintaining good hydration and health during extreme heat. Know the signs of heat exhaustion to avoid heat stroke. Dehydration may be difficult to notice in a person living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, as signs like increased fatigue, dry mouth and headache may be difficult to detect. People taking diuretics, sedatives, or certain heart medication may not sweat as much as others, but this does not mean that they are not hot. • Stay indoors and out of the sun. Heat stroke and heat exhaustion may occur in extreme heat conditions but symptoms may be difficult to detect in people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Keep individuals cool by using air conditioning at home or move to a public place, such as a senior center or shopping mall. If you must go outside, be sure to dress appropriately, loose, light clothing, wear a hat, and apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 or higher. • Stay informed. Keep an eye on local weather forecasts. High temperatures are not the only cause for concern. Humidity and air pollution indices can cause breathing difficulties. The person should be monitored regularly and seek medical attention if symptoms arise of dehydration, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke. The Alzheimer’s Association is here to help families take measures to prepare for and cope with such extraordinary circumstances. Health department promotes National Breastfeeding Month During World Breastfeeding Week, which runs from Aug. 1-7, and National Breastfeeding Month, in August, the Westchester County Department of Health is recognizing the public health contribution of breastfeeding mothers. “I encourage all new mothers to give breastfeeding a chance because breast milk is best for baby,” said county Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler. “It provides antibodies that can protect infants from diseases before they are fully vaccinated. It can reduce their risk of Sudden Infant Death and their risk of obesity later in life, and it also benefits mothers.” The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends infants breastfeed exclusively until they are six months old. In June, the Academy also issued new guidance urging pediatricians to support parents who continue to breastfeed after solid foods are introduced at six months, and up until the child is two or older. Through its Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, WIC, the Health Department supports mothers who breastfeed by providing them with breast pumps, additional nourishing food and the help of certified lactation counselors and peer counselors. Currently, 117 WIC moms are exclusively breastfeeding and 470 are partially breastfeeding. To promote the important benefits of breastfeeding and to honor exclusively breastfeeding WIC moms, the Westchester County Health Department WIC program has launched a virtual game they can play to compete for prizes based on their breastfeeding know-how. Participants will use clues to complete a crossword puzzle, then text or email their results to the WIC Program. Chosen via raffle on Aug. 1 to kick off World Breastfeeding Week and National Breastfeeding Month, winners will receive baby-re-

lated gifts donated by community partners and will be featured on the Health Department Facebook Page. Westchester WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator Angela Ngowi said: “This contest is a show of appreciation to breastfeeding mothers for giving their babies the best start in life. We introduce breastfeeding basics to pregnant WIC clients through our virtual breastfeeding classes, and help new mothers learn what to expect during delivery and beyond.” The crosswords are due July 29, and winners will be selected Aug. 1. Moms who are selected will be asked to take a selfie with their baby and send it in along with a few sentences about why breastfeeding their baby is important to them. Test your breastfeeding IQ* with these clues: 1. What is the healthiest way to feed your baby? 2. What protective substance found in breast milk can help build your baby’s immune system? 3. Name one thing a mom can do to maintain her milk supply when away from her baby? Amler also thanked local hospitals for helping new mothers as they start breastfeeding, and encouraged residents and businesses to support the efforts of mothers to continue breastfeeding as their babies grow. Benefits to babies who receive their mother’s milk: • fewer ear infections, respiratory infections and digestive infection; • lower risk of developing diabetes or cancer; • lower risk of developing asthma and allergies; • less likely to be obese later in life; and • less likely to die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, SIDS. Benefits to women who breastfeed their infants: • recover faster after birth and tend to lose preg-

In recognition of the anniversary of ADA, county highlights the Office for People with Disabilities In honor of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, ADA, of 1990, Westchester County Executive George Latimer is highlighting the critical services provided by the Office for People with Disabilities. The Office for People with Disabilities, which acts as a clearinghouse of information for people with disabilities, their families and advocates, places a special focus on connecting residents with the services they need. Through educational programs and awareness efforts, resource guides, and employment and transportation assistance, the Office for People with Disabilities is ensuring all residents have full and equal access to everything in Westchester County. “The ADA is one of our nation’s most crucial pieces of legislation that prohibits discrimination, and guarantees people with disabilities have equal access to all opportunities in life,” Latimer said. “Our Office for People with Disabilities ensures all entities in Westchester maintain compliance with our State and Federal laws that prohibit discrimination based on disability. We want everyone in Westchester to know they are welcome here – they will not be defined by their disability. I thank the Office for People with Disabilities for their efforts today, and every day, in working to make sure Westchester County is a safe and accessible place for all.” One of the keystone programs for the Office for People with Disabilities is the Disability Awareness Program, which has been provided

for 16 years. The Disability Awareness Program details a day in the life of an individual with disabilities, and is available to all school districts, colleges, graduate schools and camps in Westchester County. Other areas of focus for the Office for People with Disabilities include: · ADA Coordinator – The Westchester County Office for People with Disabilities works directly with residents to ensure they have full equal access to all businesses and facilities, accessible parking, access to fair housing and reasonable accommodations in an employment. Disability Resource Guide – The Disability Resource Guide is a one-stop-shop of services and programs available in Westchester County, categorized by disability or disability service that align with your needs. Westchester Employment Network – The Westchester Employment Network is a connective service between employers and people with disabilities providing them vocational services and employment opportunities. Bee-Line ParaTransit – Bee-Line ParaTransit is a shared transportation, curb-to-curb, origin-to-destination service available to people with disabilities in Westchester County. B.E.A.T. Plus “Be Educated About Transit” – This program brings hands-on travel skills into special education life skills classrooms. It teaches students the skills needed to ride public transportation in a safe and responsible manner.

· Reduced Fare Service for the Bee-Line Bus – People with disabilities may travel the BeeLine Bus system at a reduced fare in conjunction with the Metro Card Reduced Fare System. Sign Language Interpreting - Those in need of a sign language interpreter can call the Westchester County Office for People with Disabilities for referral and advocacy services. Annual events for the Office for People with Disabilities include: · National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) – October celebrates the many successes of people with disabilities who are employed. · The Miracle League of Westchester – A baseball league for children and adults with disabilities located at Miracle League Field at Ridge Road Park in Hartsdale. · A Day at Playland for People with Disabilities – A special day in July for individuals with disabilities and their families to enjoy free rides and entertainment at Playland. “Our mission is to represent the disabled community here in Westchester County ensuring that they receive the services they all are entitled to,” said Evan Latainer, director of the Office for People with Disabilities. “We look forward to advocating for the disabled in Westchester.” For more information and a complete list of resources please visit https://disabled. westchestergov.com/

Children are determined Other Source Categorically Eligible if they are Homeless, Migrant, Runaway, A foster child, or Enrolled in Head Start or an eligible pre-kindergarten program. If children or households receive benefits under Assistance Programs or Other Source Categorically Eligible Programs and are not listed on the notice of eligibility and are not notified by the School Food Authority of their free meal benefits, the parent or guardian should contact the school or should submit an income application. Other Households: Households with income the same or below the amounts listed above for family size may be eligible for and are urged to apply for free and/or reduced price meals (or free milk). Foster children are eligible for free meal benefits. A separate application for a foster child is no longer necessary. Foster children may be listed on the application as a member of the family where they reside. Applications must include the foster child’s name and personal use income. Locals hoop it up at Hudson Park By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor

On a sweltering night in July, scenic Hudson Park in Irvington was abuzz with local hoopers testing their mettle under the lights in the long-running O’Hara Summer Basketball League. For decades now, ‘The O’Hara’ has served not only as a staple summer activity but also a place for high school teams to get valuable off-season work in. Even though the varsity season might be months away, programs have been using the summer league to evaluate talent and foster a sense of on-court chemistry between players. On July 25, the Rye Neck basketball team was one of several clubs in action, taking on host Irvington in the first round of the playoff tournament that concludes the months-long summer season. And while the Panthers were pleased with a 46-45 that helped them keep their run alive, the focus is more on building for the winter season. Rising Rye Neck senior RJ Hutt—who led the Panthers in scoring for the 2021-22 season— noted that the success Rye Neck had last year seems to have lit a fire under the team’s returning players. Rye Neck finished last season with an 18-4 record in a stacked Class B and are hoping to improve upon the strides the team made last year. Though the team graduated a few important cogs on last years team, they are working on retooling for the upcoming campaign with a few new faces, including younger players looking to break into the varsity ranks and transfers like senior point guard Ethan Lithgow, who is returning to Rye Neck from a year at Monsignor Scanlan High School. “We are missing some guys, we lost some guys who graduated, but we’re working hard to get better,” said Hutt. “We’re working to get better every day.” The Panthers aren’t the only ones who

have had that idea either; the O’Hara Summer Basketball league features 16 teams total—eight boys teams and eight girls teams— including squads from Rye and Eastchester High School. The chance to compete against other high school programs—and work on ingame scenarios that will likely pop up during the year—has been invaluable, explained Hutt. On Monday night, the Panthers found themselves defending a small lead with time running out, allowing them to work on lategame strategy against motivated opponents. “It’s important to work on those situations because we’re going to see them during the year,” said Hutt. “It’s just preparation for what we’re trying to do.” CONACT: sports@hometwn.com

Champs Boxers take center stage in Ring Masters Tournament By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor

On July 23, two local fighters saw their campaigns for a Ring Masters championship come up just short, as Rafael Castillo and Cat Martinez—both representing Champs Boxing Club—fell in the double-elimination finals held at John’s Boxing Gym in the Bronx. Despite their eventual defeats in the finals, however, both Martinez and Castillo believes that they learned valuable lessons competing in the months-long tournament. On Saturday, Martinez and Castillo—competing in the 125 Elite Female and 139 Elite Male divisions respectively—took part in the Ring Masters Remix Double Elimination Finals, the final leg of a National Golden Gloves qualifier tournament that began in March. The competition, which was presented by USA Boxing Metro, featured some of the top amateur boxers from the area and played out in venues across Westchester, New York City and Long Island. The finals offered the Champs Boxing Club duo one more chance against opponents they had become quite familiar with during the tournament, they both faced their finals foes for a third and decisive rubber match with the crown on the line. Martinez dropped a unanimous decision to Gleason Athletic Club’s Jaclyn McAl-

lister in a spirited bout, while Castillo found himself on the short end of a split decision against Antonino Tantillo should be fighting out of NYC Cops and Kids Boxing Club. Martinez said that coming into Saturday’s bout, she was well aware of her opponent’s power, and even though she hoped to use her speed to her advantage, she found herself drawn into an electric slugfest that ultimately ended up benefitting the Gleason’s product. “She’s a big, strong girl, so my plan was to outbox her,” said Martinez. “But I think I got caught up and brawled with her.” Castillo and Tantillo’s third fight was no less exciting, as the two spent the better part of three rounds exchanging blistering combinations. “That second fight was where [Tantillo] made his adjustments so I switched some things up this time around, tried to get him to chase me a little bit and meet him in the middle,” said Castillo. “I think it worked out for me a little bit better.” Both Champs boxers said that the event truly tested their mettle and helped them find out more about who they were, both as fighters and individuals. Martinez, who started boxing in 2019, said that her showing in the tournament reaffirmed her faith in her abilities. “I learned that I have a lot of heart and I can take a

big punch,” said Martinez. “I fight against people with a lot more experience than me, I spar with people who have a lot more experience than me, and I feel like I can go out and compete against anybody.” Castillo added that he welcomed the chance to square off against some of the top fighters in the area and that the experience he gained during the tournament should serve him well in the future. “It was a great tournament, it was long, but it was a lot of fun,” added Castillo. “I got experience against some of the best amateurs in New York City, so that only makes you better.” Contact: sports@hometwn.com
