Saint Pio Foundation embarks on national pizza campaign The People of Hope, operated by the not-for-profit Saint Pio Foundation in Tuckahoe, announced an exciting new initiative called “Pizza for a Smile.”

The inspiration for “Pizza for a Smile” arose in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when then five-year-old Sebastian Lamonarca from Scarsdale, and his father Luciano, Founder and CEO of the Saint Pio Foundation, were waiting in line to get pizza. Ahead of them was a crying little girl and her mother, who was trying to gather the money needed to buy a pizza. Sebastian approached the girl, like a child would, to say that he would happily share his pizza

The law prohibits the sale, lease or rental of a wide variety of products, devices and equipment unless it utilizes a properly graded, factory-installed battery.

Damaged or unstable batteries and improper charging, storage or disposal can cause the batteries to overheat, lead-

ing to an explosive, aggressive fire that spreads rapidly, and is challenging to extinguish.

Educating the public to the potential hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries, as well as providing the appropriate safety measures will mitigate those risks. The requirement of signage will allow consumers to make smarter and safer buying choices.

County hosts its first Youth Medtech Conference

On Saturday, Oct.28, the Westchester County Youth Bureau hosted the inaugural Youth MedTech Conference with over 250 middle school and high school students at Mercy University’s Westchester campus in Dobbs Ferry.

On Saturday, Oct.28, the Westchester County Youth Bureau hosted the inaugural Youth MedTech Conference with over 250 middle school and high school students at Mercy University’s Westchester campus in Dobbs Ferry. This event, held in partnership with Sister to Sister International and Mercy University STEP Program, was designed to encourage the exploration of high growth industries that combine medicine and technology.

Students participated in workshops and heard from a panel of diverse professionals, some of which are key in top institutions within Westchester - Regeneron, St. John’s Riverside Hospital, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, Aetna (A CVS Company), Westchester County Community College, Jack and Jill of America - Mid Hudson Valley Chapter and more.

County Executive George Latimer said: “Technology is a driving force for much of what we do today. We are grateful to the Westchester County Youth Bureau and its partners for thinking about the futures of our youth and preparing them for careers that go beyond what we all know concerning Medicine and Technology. Youth are incredibly innovative and inquisitive and programs like what we have seen today support their interests and capabilities.”

Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins attended the event and gave opening greetings to those in attendance.

Youth Bureau Executive Director Dr. DaMia Harris-Madden said: “I am constantly inspired by today’s youth and their desire to solve complex problems. The concept of the Youth MedTech Conference came out of my travels throughout the County, talking to future leaders about their interests in bioengineering, research and development, software designs, along with many other healthcare and technology careers. The intersection of technology and medicine, also known as MedTech, is exciting and this event had excellent presenters who have brought their expertise and passion out on a Saturday to encourage students to remain steadfast to their future aspirations. The

Bureau enlisted partnership with many, the main being the Mercy University STEP program and Sister to Sister International, as both organizations have supported hundreds youths in their interests in STEM careers.”

In the opening portion of the program, students were addressed by elected officials and specialists who spoke to the economic opportunities within Med-tech career pathways. Amongst the opening panelists were Orane Barrett, CEO of Kool Nerd Connect, Bridget Gibbons, Westchester County Director of Economic Development and Dr. Chiatogu Onyewu, Sr. Director of Genetics Medicine and operations at Regeneron. The two young children sat next to each other on a park bench, enjoying their pizza together, giving the pizza maker the biggest smiles anyone has ever seen.

As the story goes, Sebastian and his father happened to watch the popular Netflix series called “Chef Table: Pizza,” presenting six of the most famous pizza chefs.

The headliner of the program was Chris Bianco, widely recognized as owning one of the best pizzerias in the United States, and winner of the coveted James Beard Award.

With the naïveté that only a child could have, Sebastian asked his father if he could meet Chris. Thanks to mutual friends, Sebastian and his father were finally able to meet the legendary Chris Bianco, who welcomed them to “Pizzeria Bianco” his famous pizzeria in Phoenix. After Chris heard their vision for the project, he readily agreed to become its spokesperson, and it was on that day that the initiative finally had its name changed, on the suggestion of Chef Bianco, from “A Margherita for a Smile” to “Pizza for a Smile.”

On Nov. 1, the initiative will be launched in a press conference nationwide from Los

Angeles, where American film, theater and television personality Joe Mantegna and James Beard Foundation Award winner, chef, and restaurateur Chris Bianco (headliner of the popular NETFLIX TV Series “Chef Table: Pizza”) will be in attendance to show their support.

To put it in Sebastian’s own words. inspirator and initiative’s ambassador: “When I encounter pizza, I always smile. There is always a story, and that is that pizza always makes you smile. We want to make people happy and receive a smile in exchange!’

“By launching this initiative, The People of Hope (Saint Pio Foundation) intends to change the way we bring nourishment to those in need,” said Founder and CEO Luciano Lamonarca. “We strive to feed not only the body but also the soul of those who are hungry. A pizza delivers both experiences perfectly, and we could not be prouder to borrow from our Italian culture and cuisine to help those that face significant health and spiritual challenges.”

Lamonarca noted that the initiative will soon launch in Dallas, Philadelphia, and New York, with more cities to be announced in the future. The charitable program was established on May 25, 2023, at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers, where more than 500 pizzas were prepared for those in need.

Historical society, Jay Center host program on the Lemmon Slave Case Graphic Designer | Design2pro

On Sunday, Oct. 29, the Historical Society of the New York Courts in conjunction with the Jay Heritage Center conducted a compelling program entitled: The Legacy of the Lemmon Slave Case and the Contribution of John Jay II. The event featured a conversation with author and retired Court of Appeals Judge Albert M. Rosenblatt. Rosenblatt authored the book, “The Eight: The Lemmon Slave Case and the Fight for Freedom.”

The program was moderated by Judge Philippe Solages of the Nassau County Supreme Court. A special guest appearance was made by Luanne Wills-Merrell, who is a descendant of two of the formerly enslaved people. The event was co-sponsored by the Westchester Bar Association and the Westchester Black Bar Association.

The conversation between Rosenblatt and Solages focused on a variety of historical issues including slavery in U.S. and in New York, freedom suits, the Underground Railroad and the abolition movement.

The Jay Heritage Center was a perfect venue for the event because of the Jay family’s legacy of abolitionism. John Jay II represented the eight enslaved women and children in 1852. Now known as the Lemmon Slave Case, the court ruled that the eight were free upon arriving on New York’s free soil, and the case became a battle cry for secession when appeals defied the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Dred Scott v. Sandford. The program also comprehensively addressed the

Westchester shines in season 2 of ‘The Gilded Age’ In the much-anticipated second season of the award-winning historical drama, “The Gilded Age,” Westchester once again takes centerstage. Beginning at Lyndhurst in the opening shot of season one, the HBO series returned to film several episodes in Westchester locations that help to tell the story of the historic period the show depicts.

County Executive George Latimer said: “Having ‘The Gilded Age’ film its second season in Westchester not only shines a spotlight on our County’s rich history and stunning landscapes, but it demonstrates that we are a prime destination for top-tier film projects.

Our diverse locations and spaces are a huge draw for the industry, which bring $1.1 billion in economic activity to Westchester.”

Set in 1880s New York City, the eight-episode season delves into the opulent, old-money lifestyles of high-society New York, exploring themes of ambition and societal change, interwoven with several storylines: Bertha Russell’s attempts to force her way into elite social circles; her husband, George Russell’s union troubles at his Pittsburgh steel plant; Marian’s foray into teaching, and Peggy Scott’s activism, among others.

Historically authentic locations are key

The intricate plot details unfold against a glamorous backdrop of historical estates.

When scouting for film locations, the production team found much of what they needed in Westchester County according to Executive Producer David Crockett and Director Michael Engler.

Engler said: “It’s all about location, location, location. These magnificent homes and estates, now repurposed for public and civic use, still bear the unmistakable imprint of the Gilded Age. Look no further than Manhattanville College and Lyndhurst Castle for proof.

It was invaluable to have those resources available to us — you just can’t fake that.”

The production filmed in Westchester over a two-week period in summer 2022. Discovering “hidden gems” such as the Jacob Purdy House in White Plains added to the appeal of filming in the County, adds Crockett. The 1720 farmhouse stood in for the Tuskegee classroom where Marion secretly teaches.

Crockett said: “It’s when you start to dive into the area and look for what else is from that era that you find these gems. The Jacob Purdy House was a literal diamond in the rough. It’s a perfect example of something unexpected that added a unique touch to the series.”

Another new location for the production team included Reid Castle at Manhattanville College, which served as office and art gallery interiors for the show. Crockett added: “We shot there for several days in multiple locations, taking advantage of the period nature and the great look of the area.”

Returning to Lyndhurst, which featured prominently in season one, offered fresh opportunities. as well. Engler added: “We knew we had more stories, so, we used more rooms, more entrances, more of the grounds, and the service parts of the grounds. It was really just the fact that there was a lot there to work with, and we could expand on that.”

The production team also revisited Glenview Mansion at Hudson River Museum, which served as the interior for Mrs. Astor’s house, and Pace University in Pleasantville, which served as a restaurant interior and provided space for base camp.

Film-friendly communities enhance Westchester’s appeal

A warm reception from the surround-

ing community made an impression on the production team, according to Engler. “We all love shooting in Westchester. Most of what we film up there is because of the space—the land, big parking lots, parks, and pathways.

When we go, it’s almost like we’re in our own little world; everyone enjoys it and stays for a few days.”

Crockett also highlighted the sense of community and relaxation that Westchester offers to the crew. Crockett added: “The crew scatters to the wind during lunch, going for walks through the park and enjoying the best of the area. The days can be long and hard, so we get to really savor the surroundings.”

With over 300 people involved, the production is sizeable. Westchester welcomed them with open arms, noted Crockett.

Engler concluded: “Some locations, such as the Jacob Purdy House, are in residential neighborhoods. Everyone was incredibly welcoming. There was an appreciation for what we were doing. People were extremely friendly and gracious. Kids would come by and interact with the crew, creating a sense of community.”

Westchester’s resources help recreate the Gilded Age

The production team made full use of Westchester’s resources, according to Crockett, sourcing construction crews and materials needed to transform historical locations into sets. Collaborating with local historians, they meticulously ensure every detail captured the essence of the time period. “They are so well-versed and we relied on them quite a bit,” he said.

Westchester County Tourism and Film director Natasha Caputo said: “We’re thrilled to host the production team for a second time, as it brings economic benefits to our communities and signals Westchester is a preferred filming location for the industry. We’re also proud to showcase our cultural assets, many of which are open to the public. We couldn’t be prouder to see Westchester featured in the show.”

Season two of The Gilded Age premiered on Oct. 29 at 9 pm on HBO with streaming on HBO Max.

Lead Safe Westchester commits $4.1M to safeguard homes In recognition of National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week which runs through Oct. 28, the Westchester County Department of Planning is reminding residents about the Department’s Lead Safe Westchester (LSW) $4.1-million-dollar grant program.

The program is aimed at enhancing the safety of paint hazards in homes built before 1978, a silent threat that continues to affect households across the county.

The program offers grants to address and repair lead-based paint hazards, ensuring that homes meet modern safety standards. To qualify for these critical grants, households occupying the assisted units must have an annual income at or below 50-80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) for Westchester County.

By targeting this income bracket, LSW extends a helping hand to those who may face financial barriers to addressing lead hazards in their homes. Priority consideration will be given to households with young children under six years old and pregnant women, acknowledging the heightened risk of lead exposure for these individuals.

Our comprehensive Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Program, featuring safe disposal options, point-of-sale warnings, firefighter training and robust education efforts, demonstrates our commitment to public safety. We’re dedicated to ensuring that these batteries are used responsibly, safeguarding the lives and property of Westchester County residents.”

Westchester’s new comprehensive Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Program includes: • Legislation requiring point of sale warnings and safety information, • Requirements that devices meet UL safety standards, and • Prohibition on the sale of re-assembled or damaged batteries.

The Program also includes public education, Firefighter training, and disposal options for damaged and old batteries.

Residents can bring lithium-ion batteries, damaged or otherwise ready for disposal to the H-MRF in Valhalla. Residents outside the Refuse Disposal District (Bedford, Lewisboro, New Castle, North Castle, North Salem, Pound Ridge and Somers), may incur a fee associated with handling and/or disposal. New York State also offers an extended producer responsibility program for non-mobility batteries under 25 pounds. administered by Call2Recycle.

Battling the elements We’re reaching the point in the fall season—the final two weeks—where historically the weather begins to turn, making covering outdoor activities a less than desirable way to spend one’s afternoons or evenings.

But as much as I dread the inevitable winter chill, after the last few months, I have to ask myself; could it really get much worse?

As far as sports seasons go, I’d be hard pressed to find one that has been marred by bad weather quite like this one. Seven weekends in a row, we were treated to rainy weekends that made covering—and photographing—sporting events a unique challenge.

And now as it gets colder, I’d have to say I’d gladly welcome the winter air if it keeps some of the moisture away.

Of course, it didn’t really, at least this past weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, I was up at Lakeland High School to cover both the boys soccer and field hockey championship rounds.

And the fickle nature of the weather was never more on display; Saturday was a gorgeous one; nearly 80 degrees and sunny-ish—a bit of cloud cover never hurts in a photography sense—the kind of day where shorts and sandals are a definite option for spectators and reporters alike.

Sunday, however, was a different story entirely.

Blustery, cold and rainy, the day was no picnic for those in attendance, no matter

how thrilling the championship contests. As a reporter, feverishly trying to keep his extremities warm on the sidelines, it was the kind of day that made me long for the start of the winter season, where cozy gyms— rather than frostbitten fields—were the norm.

But as unpleasant as it may have been for those in attendance, what is always remarkable to me is how little of an impact the elements have on those tasked with the most important job of the day—the players.

Even at their worst, the elements never seemed to deter the players on the field in the slightest; girls were still full-on sprinting for loose balls and gamely shaking off contact with balls and sticks that made me shudder from my vantage point. In the heat of the

moment, you don’t worry about the periphery, and that that was evident from the outset on Sunday.

So while the rest of us complainers continue to bemoan the bad weath-

er, know that’s it’s simply not affecting our student athletes—not in this stage of the game.

They’ve come too far to get to this point and they’ll be out there competing at

100%, come hell, high-water, or anything else Mother Nature decides to throw at us this weekend.

On Sunday afternoon, the upstart Garnets earned perhaps the biggest victory in program history, unseating long-dominant Albertus Magnus as the Class A Section 1 champion with a decisive 2-0 victory at Nyack High School.

Coming into the game, the nationally-ranked Falcons had not lost a game to Section 1 opposition and were most pundits’ clear pick to win another Class A title. But after a scoreless first-half, the Garnets broke through in the second, netting their first goal off the foot of Isabelle Harvey with 25 minutes left to play.

Shortly thereafter, Paige Vanneck padded the lead off an assist from Maddy Walsh, giving the Garnets a 2-0 cushion that they would not relinquish.

For Rye, which finished the regular season at 14-2—good enough for a No. 2 seed—the win was an instant classic, as it came against the defending state champs who seemed likely to repeat in that department.

Now, the Garnets will head to the state tournament, where their first opponent will Section 4’s Owego Free Academy. The Garnets will take on the River Hawks Boys Soccer

In the semifinals, the Bobcats knocked off unbeaten No. 1 seed Tappan Zee by a wild 4-0

margin, giving them plenty of momentum heading into Saturday’s championship showdown.

With the win, they will move on to the New York State subregional round,

where they will play Section 4 champion Owego Free Academy on Nov. 1 at Hendrick Hudson High School.
