COVID-19 now linked to concerning child illnesses New York State is notifying 49 other states across the country of emerging cases of COVID-related illness in children. The state is currently investigating more than 80 reported cases in New York where children—predominantly school-aged—are experiencing symptoms similar to an atypical Kawasaki disease or a toxic shock-like syndrome possibly due to COVID-19. The state Department of Health has issued an advisory about this serious inflammatory disease, called «Pediatric Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome Associated with COVID-19,» to inform healthcare providers of the condition, as well as to provide guidance for testing and reporting. State searches for volunteer contact tracers Would you like to become a part of the COVID-19 Contact Tracing Initiative? New York State is now searching for volunteers to fill three types of jobs: Contact Tracers, Team Supervisors and Community Support Specialists. Contact Tracers are responsible for reaching out to the contacts of anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 to assess symptoms, ensure quarantine compliance and determine social support needs.
Team Supervisors lead a team of 20 Contact Tracers, and one Community Support Specialist who are working remotely, using digital tools. Community Support Specialists work with the team and the local health departments to address the physical/mental health, and social/human service needs of each family, especially for those who are in isolation or under quarantine. New York State plans to hire a team of 6,400 to 17,000 staff,
to support the state Department of Health and local health departments in performing contact tracing in communities across the state. The final number of staff will also depend on the projected total number of COVID-19 cases. More information about how to apply to be a part of the state Contact Tracing Team can be found on the Westchester County Health Department Coronavirus Page. Visit the New York State website to find out more about how you can help. (Submitted)

County cancels several Cultural Heritage Celebrations As Westchester residents deal with the new normal we all face, several events in Westchester County Parks’ annual Cultural Heritage Celebrations series have been cancelled due to the ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “These are some of my favorite events to attend, but right now, we all must put safety first,” County Executive George Latimer said. “The Cultural Heritage series is something many of us look forward to, both to celebrate our own personal heritage or to enjoy learning about the food, music, dance and heritage of other cultures that contribute to the great mosaic of Westchester’s population—things that cannot be done while keeping a safe
distance.” Each year, thousands of Westchester residents gather at these colorful and lively festivals at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla and Ridge Road Park in Hartsdale. These celebrations, of all heritages, attract far too many residents to abide by safety guidelines handed down the National Centers for Disease Control and New York State. Festivals cancelled so far: • Polish Heritage Festival-Kensico Dam Plaza, Sunday, May 17 • Asian Heritage Festival-Kensico Dam Plaza, Saturday, June 6 • Albanian Heritage Festival-Kensico Dam Plaza, Sunday, June 7
• Portuguese Heritage Festival-Ridge Road Park, Sunday, June 7 • Irish Heritage Festival-Ridge Road Park, Saturday, June 27 • African American Heritage Festival-Kensico Dam Plaza, Sunday, June 28 • Hispanic Heritage Festival-Kensico Dam Plaza, Sunday, July 12 Festivals on hold are: • Italian Heritage Festival-Kensico Dam Plaza, Sunday, July 19 • Heritage of India Festival-Kensico Dam Plaza, Sunday, Aug. 2 • Ecuadorian Festival-Croton Point Park, Sunday, Aug. 9 • Jewish Heritage Festi-
val-Kensico Dam Plaza, Sunday, Aug. 16 • Muslim Heritage Festival-Kensico Dam Plaza, Sunday Aug. 23 “With thousands of people coming to a festival at a park, we simply don’t have a way to assure proper social distancing, especially with the nature of these events that involve food and craft sales, gathering to enjoy performances and other actions that cause closer contact,” Latimer said. The Parks Department will evaluate the scheduling of all community events throughout the summer and into the fall. Any additional cancellations, postponements or rescheduling will be posted at parks.westchestergov.com. (Submitted)

Rye Neck High School seniors Grace West and Heonjae Lee have earned the school’s top honors. They were named the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the Class of 2020. Having put time and effort into their schoolwork, both accomplished students said it was rewarding to receive the recognition. West attributed her success to the support of her teachers and the close-knit Rye Neck school community. “The fact that I was supported by people who really cared about me individually gave me the tools to be successful,” West said. “I spent essentially my entire life at Rye Neck, so it is very special to me. It is where I was able to grow and find some of my favorite people. Being able to get to know people on a personal level and feel supported by so many is something very special and
very unique to Rye Neck.” Over her high school career, West has been member of the Student-Athletic Cabinet, Mock Trial and Model United Nations teams. She also served as captain of the varsity volleyball team and was a member of the varsity track team. Outside of school, she has served as a debate instructor, youth deacon at her church, research assistant at NYU Langone Health and intern at a digital startup. Having moved to Rye Neck from South Korea and overcoming numerous challenges, Lee said the recognition is especially meaningful to him. He attributed his success to his self-motivation. “It truly gives me confidence to further challenge myself in the future,” he said. “Rye Neck helped me find out my field of interest, which is developmental and urban economics. I will
miss my supportive teachers and friends, who were easy to reach out to and willing to collaborate and help.” Over his high school career, Lee has been a member of the Rye Neck Science Olympiad team. He also founded the Sustainable Development Society and was a research intern at Hunter College, where he organized socioeconomic data of New York City. In addition, he has written reports on housing affordability and gentrification for the city of New Rochelle and Mamaroneck. The soon-to-be graduates said if they could give any piece of advice to the incoming freshmen, it would be to set their own goals and values, discover their passions and stay committed to them. Lee will attend Columbia University, and West will attend Vanderbilt University. (Submitted)

Westchester County police arrested a Massachusetts man on the evening of May 11 after he was found in possession of large quantities of cocaine and marijuana as well as counterfeit prescription pills. The incident began about 5:30 p.m. when an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Central Park Avenue near the Cross County Parkway in Yonkers. The officer detected an odor of burnt marijuana in the vehicle and also observed a shopping bag on the rear seat containing what appeared to be marijuana in vacuum-sealed
bags. The driver was taken into custody. A satchel bag that he was wearing around his person was seized and found to contain a quantity of fraudulent Oxycodone pills. The vehicle, a Nissan Maxima, was impounded and towed to Westchester County police headquarters. A search warrant was obtained and more than four pounds of cocaine, or approximately two kilos, was recovered along with almost 22 pounds of marijuana. In addition, a loaded magazine for a 9 mm handgun was found in the car.
Victor Ramos, 32, of Holyoke, Massachusetts, was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 1st Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of Marijuana and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree. The reasons for Hollywood’s success during this period are intriguing. Despite the economic problems posed by the Depression, the studios became virtual entertainment factories, with each studio producing more than 50 movies a year. The legacy of these years of frenzied activity are among the best-loved, and most significant films, ever made. This presentation will examine the forces that made Hollywood the giant of global film-making and the special nature of its achievements during its Golden Age, including discussions of studio politics and economics, the star system, and the nature of the movie-going experience. They are not appointment times. You may be asked to wait in line. Please maintain 6 feet of distance between you and the people around you. Please wear a mask. No dogs in the market area. Unless a shopper requires physical assistance only one person should come to pick up the orders to avoid crowding.
