County will offer free back-to-school vaccines The Westchester County Department of Health will book appointments now for its free backto-school vaccine clinics to assure children have the vaccines they need for school. On June 13, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation removing non-medical exemptions from school vaccine requirements for children who attend childcare programs or public, private or parochial schools through 12th grade. “This will be the first school year for which there will be no religious exemptions to vaccinations in New York State,” Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler said. “Parents should schedule vaccine visits with their healthcare provider as soon as possible to be sure their children have the vaccines they need to stay in school.”

All children who do not have their required immunizations must have their first dose of vaccinations within 14 days from the first day of school. Parents and guardians of these children must show that they have made appointments for all required follow-up doses within 30 days of the start of school. The county Health Department can help. Families with no insurance, ChildHealth Plus or Medicaid should call the county Health Department to schedule an appointment for vaccines at no charge. Call 995-5800 to find out if you qualify and to make an appointment for one of the four special back-to-school clinics: • Friday, Aug. 30, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in White Plains • Tuesday, Sept. 3, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Yonkers

• Saturday, Sept. 7, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Yonkers • Tuesday, Sept. 10, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in White Plains In addition to these special clinics, the Westchester County Department of Health provides free immunizations by appointment in its White Plains and Yonkers clinics to eligible children and students of all ages who are uninsured or whose insurance does not cover vaccines. Vaccine visits can be scheduled on the first and third Fridays in White Plains or on the second and fourth Fridays in Yonkers, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Health Department clinics are located at 20 S. Broadway in Yonkers and at 134 Court St. in White Plains. Ask your healthcare provider which vaccines your children need. All 7th and 12th grad-

ers must get the meningococcal vaccine, and all students must be vaccinated against whooping cough, measles and mumps. Health Navigators available through the Health Department can help families and individuals sign up for the health insurance they need. Those without a regular doctor can learn where to go for ongoing primary care. For more information, call 995-6350. (Submitted)

Westchester County Police arrested five persons Wednesday and charged them with stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise from TJ Maxx and other retail stores in recent months. Investigators estimate the loss of goods to be valued at more than $500,000. The five suspects are accused of engaging in identity theft and credit card fraud to commit multiple larcenies over the past five months. The suspects obtained numerous credit cards through fraudulent means and used the cards to purchase merchandise before the fraudulent cards were discovered and shut down. The ring would purchase several thousand dollars in merchandise a day, including high-end pocketbooks and clothing, televisions and furniture, the investigation revealed. The suspects are preliminarily charged with multiple counts of grand larceny and other offenses. The investigation into the scheme is continuing and additional charges are anticipated. Westchester County police detectives, assisted by members of the county Police Special Response Team and investigators from the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, executed search warrants on Aug. 14 at one residence in Mount Vernon, three in the Bronx and one in Queens. The suspects were taken into custody at those locations and numerous items of stolen property, valued at more than $100,000, were seized. Several vans and a U-Haul truck were needed to haul away the seized stolen goods, and a complete inventory of the recovered items is still under way. In addition, devices used to make fraudulent credit cards and fraudulent identification were also seized. “I would like to commend the General Investigations Unit for the painstaking investigation it conducted in recent months to identify these thieves and bring them to

justice,” Police Commissioner Thomas A. Gleason said. “I am grateful to the prosecutors and investigators at the Westchester District Attorney’s Office for their invaluable assistance throughout this lengthy and complex investigation.” Gleason also thanked TJX Companies, the parent company of TJ Maxx, for its assistance and cooperation during the investigation. “This was a lucrative criminal enterprise that victimized numerous retail establishments in Westchester and beyond,” Gleason said. “We have evidence that this scheme was also utilized outside of Westchester and we will be sharing information and evidence with other jurisdictions.” Arrested in Mount Vernon were Hassan Miller, 46, of Chester Street, Mount Vernon, and Dawn Anderson, 48, of E. 143rd St., Bronx. They were each charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 2nd Degree, three counts of Criminal Possession of a Forgery Device and 76 counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, felonies. Miller and Anderson were arraigned Wednesday in Mount Vernon City Court and were remanded to the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla. The remaining three suspects were held overnight at county police headquarters in Hawthorne and will be arraigned today in Yonkers City Court. They are: Stanley Awala, 45, of 200th St., St. Albans, Queens, charged with Grand Larceny 4th Degree and Identity Theft 2nd Degree; Asanimo Riesa, 37, of East 146th St., Bronx, charged with Grand Larceny 3rd Degree and 4th Degree and Identity Theft 2nd Degree; Peter Onogwu, 63, of N. Oak Drive, Bronx, charged with Grand Larceny 4th Degree and Identity Theft 2nd Degree. The case is being prosecuted by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Investigations Division Identity Theft Unit. (Submitted)

Temps are warming up so use energy wisely and save Con Edison reminds customers to use energy wisely, as temperatures climb into the 90s. The company recommends that customers take these steps to save money, reduce impact to the environment, and help keep service reliable: • Turn off air conditioners, lights and other appliances when not at home and use a timer to turn on your air conditioner about a half-hour before arriving home • Make sure air conditioner filters are clean so the units will run at peak efficiency • Set thermostats to the highest comfortable temperature. Each degree lower increases cooling costs by 6 percent • If you have a room air-conditioning unit, close off the rooms not being used; if you have central air, block the vents in un-used or vacant rooms • To reduce heat and moisture in your apartment or home, run appliances such as ovens, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers in the early morning or late at night when it’s generally cooler outside. Use a microwave

to cook, or barbecue outside, if possible • Keep shades, blinds and curtains closed. About 40 percent of unwanted heat comes through windows. Simply drawing blinds and curtains, which act as a layer of insulation, can reduce heat in your apartment or home • Try using fans instead of air conditioners, but be sure to leave your windows open for ventilation. Fans use as little as one-tenth the energy as air conditioners Electric supplies are sufficient to meet the projected demand for electricity and company crews are ready to respond to any outages that occur. Con Edison offers numerous programs to help customers save money and stay comfortable during the summer months. Con Edison offers $25 rebates to customers who purchase an approved ENERGY STAR-rated air conditioner. Also, the Smart AC program lets customers with room air conditioners control their air conditioners remotely and

earn rewards. Customers with central air conditioning can get a $50 rebate for purchasing an approved smart thermostat. Customers who have a Con Edison electric account

and central air conditioning or a Con Edison gas account and gas heating, a WiFi network, and an eligible Nest or Honeywell Home smart thermostat, can receive an additional $85 by signing up for the smart thermostat Smart Usage Rewards program. Customers can report out-

ages and check service restoration status at conEd.com/reportoutage, with our mobile app for iOS or Android devices, or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1800-752-6633). When calling, customers should report whether their neighbors also have lost power.

Customers who report outages will receive updates with their estimated restoration times as they become available. Customers can follow Con Edison on Twitter or like us on Facebook for general outage updates, safety tips and storm preparation information. (Submitted)

By Andy Landorf & John Colquhoun

The New 60 is a weekly look about what it’s like to be in your 60’s in today’s world: adult children living at home, downsizing (jobs and houses), finding old friends on Facebook and deciphering text-speak. It’s a Brave New World of second homes, second careers and second marriages…and finding out after a lifetime of milkshakes and ice cream that you’re suddenly lactose-intolerant. The New 60 is created by two local 60-plus Westchester residents, John Colquhoun of Bronxville and Andy Landorf, who hails from Tarrytown. The duo are long-time advertising creatives and this, as the saying goes, is their Act II. Even though it features folks in their 60’s, if you know someone who is 60, have a parent who’s 60 or just generally enjoy watching funny things happen to other people, you’ll find something to relate to here—you may even find yourself saying, “Hey, that happened to me!” To read more of the New 60, visit their website at thenew60comic.com.

W. Harrison Bridge renamed in honor of NYPD’s Lemm NYPD Detective and Air Force Technical Sgt. Joseph G. Lemm’s service to his country will be memorialized by renaming in his honor the White Plains Avenue bridge that crosses over Interstate 287 and connects White Plains Avenue and Westchester Avenue in the town of Harrison to North Street in the city of White Plains. Legislation sponsored by state Assemblyman David Buchwald and state Sen. Shelley Mayer to rename the bridge was signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo this past week. Lemm was a 15-year NYPD veteran and technical sergeant in the U.S. Air Force after having been activated from the Air Force Reserves and New York Air National Guard. He was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan in 2015 when his convoy was attacked by a suicide bomber before Christmas. Lemm was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for valor by his commanding officers for putting himself in front of the bomber to protect his comrades. Lemm was serving his third tour of duty overseas, two in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. He also worked tirelessly as a first responder during 9/11.

“I am pleased to honor the commitment and sacrifice of NYPD Detective and Air Force Technical Sergeant Joseph G. Lemm by sponsoring legislation to rename a West Harrison bridge over I-287 in his honor,” said Mayer. «Det./ TSgt. Lemm served our community and our nation in numerous ways with pride and courage.” Everyone knew him as “Superman,” not because of his size, but for how big his heart was. He never said “no” when someone asked him for help. “The legislation now signed into law honors an American hero and reminds us of his sacrifice, and that of all our men and women in uniform who are committed to protecting our freedom and security,” said Buchwald. “The bridge dedication will commemorate Det./Sgt. Lemm’s commitment and the strong civic bond that he had for West Harrison, the people of New York, and his country.” Lemm’s family resides in West Harrison and he is survived by his widow, a son in elementary school, a daughter in college and mother. His widow, Christine said,

County now accepting applications for lead safe program Alzheimer’s to be discussed at next Mall Walk

Do you have chipped and peeling paint? Was your home built before 1978? Is your home in need of repairs? Do children under six years old or pregnant women live in the home? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be eligible for the Lead Safe Westchester, LSW, Program. Applicants must provide proof that they earn at or below 80 percent of the Area Median Income, AMI, for Westchester County. If lead is inhaled, swallowed or absorbed into the body, it affects the brain and developing nervous systems of young children and fetuses, which can lead to learning disabilities and behavioral problems. Westchester County received a $4.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to reduce exposure to lead-based paint, dust and other safety hazards for low and moderate income households. Westchester County provides project management services and improvements at no cost to the property owner or tenant. Apply today! come, first-served basis. Priority consideration will be given to units housing children under the age of six and/or units where a pregnant woman resides. LSW funds are awarded based on the household income of the resident. After the applications are processed, the county will inspect each unit, develop the scope of work and assist the property owner to solicit bids from licensed and certified lead abatement contractors to complete improvements that may include:

paint stabilization, door and window replacements, minor electrical repairs, installation of smoke detectors and other safety repairs. If you are a property owner or a tenant and you live in a property that was built before 1978, you may have lead-based paint in your home. “Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research” will be the title of the talk at the Mall Walk program on Friday, Sept. 6, at 9 a.m. at The Westchester’s Level 4 Food Court in White Plains. The dialogue will be part of the Healthy Living Program from the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter. Jessica Flores and Abby Salzman will be the speakers. This talk will cover lifestyle habits associated with healthy aging: cognitive activity, exercise, diet/nutrition and social engagement. Flores and Salzman will draw on current research, and discuss steps to take now to improve or maintain overall health in each area. The premise is that at any age, we can adopt lifestyle habits to help maintain or even potentially improve our health. These habits may also help to keep our brains healthy as we age and possibly delay the onset of cognitive decline. Hot Dog Eating Contest Highlights Walter’s 100th Anniversary Celebration

Nationally known Walter’s Hot Dogs is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a hot dog eating contest at its original location. The centennial is being marked with $1 hot dogs and will take place on Aug. 26, coinciding with customer appreciation day at all three of the Walter’s locations, in

Mamaroneck, White Plains and Stamford, Connecticut. The contest is at 3 p.m. on Aug. 25 in Mamaroneck. There will be live music and all age fun activities. Walter’s Hot Dogs opened in 1919 on Palmer Avenue. The building itself was established in 1928. It is a copper-roofed Chi-

nese pagoda and a National Register of Historic Places designated landmark. Their hot dogs are a blend of beef, pork, and veal and come split down the middle, grilled in housemade secret sauce and served on a toasted bun with Walter’s signature mustard. (Submitted)
