Message from the Editor

First and foremost I would like to thank all our

readers for the overwhelming response received with our first issue launched in June. Its always difficult to please everyone with a new publication but, besides a couple of spelling mistakes, which I don’t want to go into at this point in time,we believe that we delivered a quality product and hope that we will be able to maintain the standard set with our first issue. We are trying to be representative of the whole of the UK and would therefore like to request participation from all over the UK with regards to anything of interest happening in your area. Let us know and we will publish the relevant information for everyone to enjoy. What an eventful month June has been. The most important one has obviously been the 2010 Fifa World Cup and we have to congratulate Spain on their win. We also have to mention the fantastic performance from Bafana Bafana. We believe that they can take there performance to any international field without having to doubt their own abilities. Looking ahead to the month of July,Nelson Mandela Day is celebrated on the 18th of July and we are featuring an article on the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund in the UK. Growing up in South Africa in the eighties, music played an important role in our growing years during that period. We were listening to Depeche Mode,Yazoo and many other famous UK based bands and artists. We have decided to run a monthly feature on some of those artists that made us look at life in a different manner. In our July issue we will be featuring Boy George. On the sporting front we will be kicking of the Tri Nations between South Africa,New Zealand and Australia. It should be a tough one as South Africa will be playing their first three opening games away. We hope that the parents with kids enjoyed our Kids Club section. This will be a on going monthly feature and we would request that parents get involved and let us know what they would like to see in the “Kids Club” section. We have created a Expat TV channel on our new website so please pop in and enjoy some of the videos that we are featuring. This is also a great medium to promote your business, product or service if you do have a promotional video available. Advertising rates in our magazine and on our website is extremely competitive so give us a call to discuss your advertising requirements. Well,I suppose that’s all, hope I haven’t left anything out. Have a fantastic July and lets hope the good weather prevails !

“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.”

Nelson Mandela’s vision for the future of South Africa, his personal commitment and sacrifice, his

role in leading his country into a new democratic era are recognised the world over, and have made him an iconic world leader. One of his first actions on becoming President of the newly democratic South Africa in 1994 was to establish the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. He pledged one third of his salary for his five years as President during which time the Fund rapidly developed its work. The Vision for the NMCF

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund works to give children a better life and better future. It fundamentally believes that you cannot separate the well being of children from the communities in which they live. Taking a long term view, NMCF works closely with community partners, aiming to develop and strengthen them so that they can continue the work for children into the future. In this way NMCF’s work ensures a better, more stable future for children and young people The Well Being of the Child programme is NMCF’s largest and focuses on the difficult areas of child abuse, child refugees and street children. Innovative witness support programmes like the Teddy Bear Clinics help to prepare children to give evidence in court and shelters for street children offer health care and protection while seeking to re-unite children with a family member. Child headed households and children who are caring for sick parents as a result of the HIV Aids pandemic are also offered support through the Goelama programme. Communities have developed their own responses to ensure that children are financially and emotionally supported, and wherever possible maintain access to education, despite the responsibilities they are bearing.

Skills training aims to equip young people with appropriate skills to take their place in the workforce and contribute to the economic future of the country. NMCF encourages programme leaders to work with businesses to ensure that young people are offered work experience and real opportunity, as well as developing entrepreneurial skills. Leadership and Excellence is a schools based programme, building confidence and self-esteem in young people and encouraging them to make the most of their talents and abilities through volunteering and other activities. NMCF recognise clearly that they are the next generation of leaders in all aspects of South African society, and need to be developed and nurtured accordingly. The Children with Disabilities programme combines practical interventions of training and rehabilitation with awareness raising and research. The emphasis is on the integration of disabled young people into their communities and mainstream education to ensure that they have the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers. In the words of Nelson Mandela; “In the light of the complex challenges facing humankind…it has become imperative that the Children’s Fund should, and must, outlive future generations and ourselves” The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund UK is a registered charity, working with individual supporters, volunteers, charitable trust and companies to raise awareness of its work, and the funds necessary to support it. We are very grateful to all those who continue to demonstrate their support for our work, and in doing so help to carry forward Mr Mandela’s vision for a better future for South Africa.

Six Mandela Day ideas

One: Create safe and cheery schools

Many crèches and schools are not happy, safe and warm. Taking some time to help clean the classrooms or work in the garden will create an exciting and inspirational space for pupils.

Two: Make and donate educational toys

Many crèches and classrooms don’t have basic educational toys like puzzles and blocks, but these tools allow children to have fun while they learn.

Three: Give a fun book

Give a favourite book or write a story, one that a child is sure to enjoy. Many children don’t have access to books written in their mother tongue, but often it is in this way that they form a lasting connection with books.

Four: Read together

Reading to children, and with them, will allow them to experience the joy of books.

Five: Tell a story

Story-telling is a way of passing on history, and teaching children about life, especially when the story is told by a person who has experienced the events they are relating.

Six: Support children at play

Children learn through both independent and organised play, but many don’t get the chance because they don’t have suitable supervision and guidance at break times, or after school. First published by MediaClubSouthAfrica.com

Who doesn’t remember hits like “Karma Chameleon” and “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me”? Many of us either grew up with Boy George or know and appreciate his music even today. He has managed to become an icon for not only the eighties generation, but also struck a cord with the new generation.

Boy George (born George Alan O’Dowd; 14 June 1961) is a British singer-songwriter who was part of the English ‘New Romantic’ movement which emerged in the early 1980s. He helped give androgyny an international stage with the success of ‘Culture Club’ during the 1980s. His music is often classified as ‘blue-eyed soul’, which is influenced by rhythm and blues and reggae. His 1990s and 2000s-era solo music has glam influences such as David Bowie and Iggy Pop. He also founded and was lead singer of Jesus Loves You during the period 1989–1992. Being involved in many activities (among them songwriting, DJ, writing books, designing clothes and photography) Q: You were part of the music scene in the 1980’s, a very special moment in pop music. After 30 years, what do you think was the most important lesson that you learnt during that time? A: Like many people who seek fame, I believed that fame or success would create a problem free life for me, that it would remove my insecurities. I have more realistic expectations from fame these days. I have learnt to be in the moment and enjoy what I do without worrying too much about the past or the future. I am lucky to do something I love and make a living from it and so I try now to really focus on how fortunate I am. My music has always been a kind of personal diary and I write about how I feel and how I see the world around me. If you can touch another soul or reach into people’s heart and make them feel I believe that is true success. In the 80s much of south America was restricted to me as an artist and many of my fans lived under a dictatorship. To those who felt like outsiders my message was very powerful and I

still believe it to be so. Q: How has music evolved since you first started? A: I have always tried to be true to myself and to express as honestly as possible what I feel in my heart. right now I seem to be consumed with the desire to convey a more spiritual vibe. I’ve just written a new song called ‘yes we can’ which was inspired by the Barak Obama speech which I have used as a metaphor for personal change. I’ve also recorded a version of ‘down by the riverside’ which has long been a personal favourite. I guess honesty or the desire to as honest as possible has been the major evolution. To stay true to whatever emotion I am feeling even if in hindsight it turns out to be the wrong emotion. Q: Who in your opinion is the most important pop star (of band) of all time? A: You make it sound like a competition. who can answer such a question, there are so many great bands and artists. Bowie, Joni Mitchell, the Beatles,

Bob Dylan, Nina Simone.......the list goes on and on for me. I love all kinds of music as long as it has heart and honesty. Q: What advice would you give to someone starting out in the music business today? A: I’d say that you should always remain true to your ideals and vision. The most revolutionary thing you can do is respect and love yourself. Q: What is the one thing that no-one knows about you? A: That despite my many mistakes and the wealth of disturbing headlines I am very upbeat and I know the difference between right and wrong and I am much more than a sound bite. There have been monumental changes in my life in the past year or so and I am keen to remind people that I am first and foremost a musician and artist and that however bad things may get the human spirit is remarkable and it is possible to change. I feel more like myself every day! Q: What three things are essential to you? ge Pa 13 The SA Expat - July 2010

A: Qualities rather than items are important. firstly, humour, without my sense of humour I think I would have gone insane because whatever doesn’t kill you will make you stronger! My tenacity is also vital because at times you need to have it in abundance just to make it through one single day but I would say that more important than all of that would be my mobile phone because it contains the numbers of all the folk I love and who love me and being able to talk with someone who cares is priceless! Q: What is the best advice you were ever given? A: I was once told to ‘shut up’ by a speaker at a self awareness convention I was attending. At the time I reacted quite badly to the comment but after I calmed down and spoke calmly with the person in question I was quite relieved to learn that I didn’t have to always be the centre of attention. I was actually been asked to listen before I just blurted out the first thing on my mind and it was advice that took years to register but it turned out to be good advice and a bit of a relief. The other thing was ‘you teach best that hich you need to learn’. Q: Has it come to the point where your infamy has overshadowed your music? A: I believe that happened past tense but I am operating with greater integrity and I intend to remind people that I am not only a great artist but a serious one too! Q:Did your autobiographies drive away a lot of your friends? A: it got rid of the fair-weather variety and that’s no bad thing. I am very lucky that my good friends know me well enough to read between the bitchy lines. I love the first book but the second one was ill informed and I am no

Pa g 14 e

longer mindlessly bitchy about people. They say ‘people don’t change’ but I feel more like myself every day! Q: Who are your musical influences? A: I have numerous musical influences. I was a teenager in the 70’s and it was a very eclectic period for music. The most obvious influence would be David Bowie, both his sound and appearance. also, Marc Bolan & T-Rex, the stylistics, Gladys Knight & the pips, Donnie Hathaway. My dad was a builder and often cleared houses and brought home records, one such record was ‘applause’ by pearl bailey which got me hooked on the great jazz singers, Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington. I aspire to write lyrics as well as Joni Mitchell and I’m a huge fan of the likes of Bob Dylan, johnny cash. I enjoy anything with heart and passion but for me a smart lyric, a strong melody and overwhelming melancholy always saves the day. Q: Describe the song writing process? A: I have mostly always written my own songs, working from instinct and writing in my head. I then sit with my guitarist John Themis and bass player Kevan frost, and develop my song ideas. I never write alone because I don’t play an instrument but I create melodies and lyrics in my head and together with John or Kevan I put them to music. song writing is quite a personal process for me and my favourite artists have always been those who write from an honest point of view, Joni Mitchell is a big hero of mine. Q: Singer or a DJ? which role do you prefer? A: It’s wonderful to have the choice but my first passion is

Feature

creating my own music, it gives me a voice and I have so much I need to express and share with all those people who feel they are different. my message was always very powerful to gay people who lived in prejudiced dictatorships and much of Latin America was trapped in dictatorships when I first started culture club. There are still battles to be fought and too many people around the world suffer inequality because of their sexual preferences so I still feel my message is as important as it was in the 80s. Q: Do you think that your experience as a DJ has had an effect on your music? A: Yes, the music I’m making has a strong rhythmic sound and that is certainly because of my love of the dance scene. I try to blend pop and dance together. for me the lyrics, message and melody still remain the most aspect of song-writing. my songs are like a diary of what I feel and how I see the world and my place in it. When I started to DJ the British dance scene was exploding and dance music felt more vibrant and exciting then what was in the pop charts. I love the freedom I have as a DJ, anyone can give me a record they have created in their bedroom or wherever and I can play it. it doesn’t matter if it’s signed to a record label or if other DJ ‘s are playing it or not. if I like it I play it, it’s quite punk and you no longer has such freedom in the commercial music scene. dance is also constantly evolving and the music I’m currently creating has both a dance and a pop edge. Q: How have you changed in the last 10 years? A: I have become a beacon of sanity! For more information go to: boygeorgeuk.com

As much as we share the human resistance to it, change (and at a fairly rapid pace) is something we are good at. A love-hate relationship Can you remember the first time you where introduced to Facebook. What an amazing experience that first friend’s request either received or sent was. Catching up with old friends and colleagues that you haven't seen for years, or coming across that first true love. Having a browse through some of their photos posted on their profiles and realising how most of them had changed since school days. Then after a while more and more people that you had never met in your life started to send you friends requests - ignore ,ignore and ignore. Then it was the turn of games, gifts, funny this and funny that - accept ignore, accept, ignore, etc. So just how has Facebook shaped the world we are living in and how dependent have we become on Facebook as a communication or networking tool. To try and come to some sort of a conclusion, we thought it best to take it right back to the beginning where it all started. Mark Zuckerberg wrote Facemash on October 28, 2003, while attending Harvard as a sophomore. The site represented a Harvard University version of “Hot or Not”, according to the Harvard Crimson. That night, Zuckerberg was blogging about a girl who had dumped him and trying to think of something to do to get her off his mind: I’m a little intoxicated, not gonna lie. So what if it’s not even 10 p.m. and it’s a Tuesday night? What? The Kirkland [dorm] facebook is open on my desktop and some of these people have pretty horrendous facebook pics. I almost want to put some of these faces next to pictures of farm animals and have people vote on which is more attractive.

—9:48 pm Yea, it's on. I'm not exactly sure how the farm animals are going to fit into this whole thing (you can't really ever be sure with farm animals...), but I like the idea of comparing two people together. —11:09 pm Let the hacking begin. —12:58 am According to The Harvard Crimson, Facemash “used photos compiled from the online facebooks of nine Houses, placing two next to each other at a time and asking users to choose the ‘hotter’ person”. To accomplish this, Zuckerberg hacked into the protected areas of Harvard’s computer network and copied the houses’ private dormitory ID images. Harvard at that time did not have a student directory with photos, and basic information and the initial site generated 450 visitors and 22,000 photo-views in its first four hours online. That the initial site mirrored people’s physical community—with their real identities—represented the key aspects of what later became Facebook. “Perhaps Harvard will squelch it for legal reasons without realizing its value as a venture that could possibly be expanded to other schools (maybe even ones with good-looking people...),” Zuckerberg wrote in his personal blog. “But one thing is certain, and it’s that I’m a jerk for making this site. Oh well. Someone had to do it eventually...”The site was quickly forwarded to several campus

group list-servers but was shut down a few days later by the Harvard administration. Zuckerberg was charged by the administration with breach of security, violating copyrights, and violating individual privacy, and faced expulsion, but ultimately the charges were dropped. Zuckerberg expanded on this initial project that semester by creating a social study tool ahead of an art history final by uploading 500 Augustan images to a website, with one image per page along with a comment section. He opened the site up to his classmates and people started sharing their notes. “The professor said it had the best grades of any final he’d ever given. This was my first social hack. With Facebook, I wanted to make something that would make Harvard more open,” Zuckerberg said in a TechCrunch interview. The following semester, Zuckerberg began writing code for a new website in January 2004. He was inspired, he said, by an editorial in The Harvard Crimson about the Facemash incident. “It is clear that the technology needed to create a centralized website is readily available,” the paper observed. “The benefits are many.” On February 4, 2004, Zuckerberg launched “Thefacebook”, originally located at thefacebook. com. “Everyone’s been talking a lot about a universal face book within Harvard,” Zuckerberg told The Harvard Crimson. “I think it’s kind of silly that it would take the University a couple of years to get around to it. I can do it better than they can, and I can do it in a week.” “When Mark finished the ge Pa 19 The SA Expat - July 2010

As of April 2010, according to The New York Times, countries with most Facebook users are the United States, the United Kingdom andIndonesia. Also in early 2010, Openbook was established, an avowed parody website (and privacy advocacy website)which enables text-based searches of those Wall posts which are available to “Everyone,” i.e. to everyone on the Internet. In December 2008, the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory ruled that Facebook is a valid protocol to serve court notices to defendants. It is believed to be the world’s first legal judgement that defines a summons posted on Facebook as legally binding. In March 2009, the New Zealand High Court associate justice David Glendall allowed for the serving of legal papers on Craig Axe by the company Axe Market Garden via Facebook.[ Employers (such as Virgin Atlantic Airways) have also used Facebook as a means to keep tabs on their employees and have even been known to fire them over posts they’ve made. Facebook has drawn criticism from a number of groups and has been banned by certain organizations or entire governments.[citation

needed]Criticism often centers around the privacy of members or third parties, the way in which Facebook uses members’ information and controversial content posted by members. In 2004, ConnectU, a company founded by classmates of Zuckerberg, filed a lawsuit against Facebook. They claimed that Zuckerberg had broken an oral contract for them to build the Facebook site, copied their idea, and used source code that belonged to them. The parties reached a confidential settlement agreement in February 2008. In 2008, they attempted unsuccessfully to rescind the settlement, claiming that Facebook had understated its valuation in connection with its settlement negotiations.Despite the confidentiality agreement, a law firm that represented ConnectU inadvertently disclosed the $65 million settlement amount. [ On July 18, 2008, Facebook sued StudiVZ in a California federal court, alleging that StudiVZ copied its look, feel, features, and services. StudiVZ denied the claims, and asked for declaratory judgment at the District Court in Stuttgart, Germany. On September 10, 2009, a settlement was reached, resulting in StudiVZ paying an undisclosed sum to Facebook and both companies continuing business as usual

On July 24, 2008, the High Court in London ordered British freelance cameraman Grant Raphael to pay £22,000 (then about US$43,700) for breach of privacy and libel. Raphael had posted a fake Facebook page purporting to be that of a former schoolfriend and business colleague, Mathew Firsht, with whom Raphael had fallen out in 2000. The fake page claimed that Firsht was homosexual and untrustworthy. The case is believed to be the first successful invasion of privacy and defamation verdict against someone over an entry on a social networking site Facebook won a lawsuit against Canadian Adam Guerbuez, of Montreal, and his business, Atlantis Blue Capital. Guerbuez had spammed the website with over 4 million messages containing various advertisements including penis enlargement products and marijuana. The judgement awarded Facebook US$873 million. So,based on the history of Facebook and ,irrespective of your own personal opinion of Facebook, what is clear is that Facebook is here to stay and the current active user figures(in excess of 400 milj) is a clear indication of where it is heading,to infinity and beyond.

It

is that time of the year again when people get all their information ready to submit there South African income tax returns. Persons who are not “residents” as defined are subject to South African normal tax on their income that is derived from a source within or deemed to be within South Africa. Someone that went to the UK to work there will most probably after a year fall in this category (you will be still a South African resident, but not anymore a “tax resident” in South Africa.) If a South African is for 183 days in any 365 day period out of South Africa (and that include one continuous period of 61 days) then he will not be liable for tax in South Africa on the foreign income earned in this period. Please take note that if you are since 1February 2010 working in London, that you do not submit your 2010 tax return before you have passed the 184 day and the 61 day test. If you do, then you will be taxed in South Africa on February’s 2010 UK income!

Pa g 24 e

You will however still have to pay tax in South Africa on South African sourced income, for example rental income from a South African property and have to pay capital gains tax on selling South African property. South Africans that are working abroad will not pay much, if any capital gains tax on the selling of property or shares if they have no other South African sourced income. If they have no other South African income then they will pay no tax in South Africa on any capital gains in South Africa that is less than R245,500!

TIME FOR

Tax Returns

Business If you have not received taxable income in South Africa, then you need to submit a Rnil return on receiving a SA tax return (or are still tax registered in South Africa). If you do not submit a return, then you will not be later able to sell your SA property if any income tax returns are in arrears. If you are still contributing to a Retirement Annuity fund in South Africa, then it is important to show this expense on your SA income tax return, even if you have not received any SA sourced income. The reason is that you will be able to claim the deduction as soon as you are back in SA and earning money in SA. People are often unsure if they need to register for tax in South Africa, while abroad. A person will need to register if he/she is going to sell a fixed property in South Africa. The sale will not take place if the seller is not tax registered in South Africa. People that need to register for tax purposes in South Africa are people whom: a. Receives income from a business in South Africa (irrespective of what the taxable income or assessed loss is.) b. Receives rental income in South Africa that is more than R15,000 per year.

c. Receives capital gains in South Africa. d. Receives income, other than remuneration. One need to register as a provisional taxpayer if your income is going to be more than the tax threshold (R57,000 for individuals younger than 65 years and R78,000 if you are 65 years and older.) Provisional tax is collected on a six-monthly basis. People often forget or are not aware that they need to register as provisional taxpayers if they receive income that is more than the tax threshold or on returning to SA and starting their own practice. Interest, penalties and additional taxes become payable, where: - estimates of taxable income or payments of provisional tax are incorrect or - estimates of taxable income or payments of provisional are not made by the last day of the period prescribed for payment. Anyone that receives a provisional return need to complete it and return it to the South African Revenue Services, even if you have not received income in South Africa! If you do not, then you will not be able to sell your fixed property in SA in the future or to get a tax clearance (to take out some money). South

Africans are allowed to take R4 million per person out of South Africa with a foreign investment tax clearance certificate. To do this they need to show proof to the South African Revenue Services of the source where the money is coming from (i.e. bank account, loan account, property sale, etc.) and to complete a FIA001. If you are working in the UK for a company and are later to work for that same company in SA, you should check that you are not taxed in SA on the pension for the years spend in the other country. If you are for example working 20 years for Shell and 5 years were abroad, then you will only be taxed in SA on 75% of your pension income after retirement. If you are coming back after a few years and you are going to keep an UK property, get yourself a valuation on leaving the UK. The reason is that if you are selling that property 10 years later, you are then taxable in South Africa on the capital gain from the date that you left the UK till the date of sale! You might benefit by contacting Fanus Jonck (tax@jonck) before you sell a South African property for a few tax tips regarding the contract, time of sale, etc. and you could also contact him for assistance with submission of tax returns.

Food for thought: Travel photography is a hot topic at the moment, after all its summer time and most of us will be travelling to some exotic places or at least venture outside the M25! So the question is: “what do you take with you on holiday with the current weight restrictions and high airport security?” If you have anything more than a compact camera you will have some headaches so the first thing to do is to figure out what you will need. This is not a wish list (Christmas is a few months away) but a list of what you expect to photograph and what you will need to achieve this. It will naturally vary depending on the kind of holiday / destination you are going to. I generally pack a few key items: compact camera, my DSLR, a wide lens, a zoom lens, a flash and a Joby Gorillapod Pa g 28 e

(a funky tripod that is small and you can twist and turn it to make anything a useful base to mount the camera – see more here). With this basic kit I feel comfortable to be able to photograph 90% of the situations I will find myself in. Obviously your holiday can be very different, and I would recommend a bit of research into your destination to find out what you can expect. For those of you who are planning a diving holiday you should consult the professionals at Ocean Optics (http://www.oceanoptics.com) to find out how to take care of your camera underwater. How to: Workflow Now that you have downloaded the image files to your computer (see last months article) you should ideally organise them so that they are easy to reference when you need to find that one

photo you want to send in for a competition onto grandma! What I use (and I got this from a Pro!) is a very logical, straightforward simple way to organise my images. I simply name them according to date and a short description like this: yymmdd_ eventname This way you can search for the date of that trip or event or by name, whichever one you remember. I know that we are going over some very basic things in the early articles of “how to” but if you do the basics right you can reach great heights. If you have any “requests” of topics you would like included in the “how to” section, please let me know. News: In the previous article I mentioned the new Adobe Lightroom 3 (LR3) that was free to download in its beta form and

Pearl Jam

Music Review Hard Rock Calling, Hyde Park, London, 25 June 2010 last year, Pearl Jam proved It was a warm overcast once more that they are up Friday night when Seattle veterans Pearl Jam took over Hyde Park without much in the way of grand gestures . Eddie Vedder, unassuming in a check rollup shirt over a black Devo tank top, his grunge locks long since cropped and nowadays sporting a dishevelled goatee has no need for fibre-optic fancy tricks. His band, who still retain all the original members after all this time has always stayed true to a kind of rootsy nonimage which arguably few of today’s clutch of so-called ‘indie-rockers’ would be able to pull off, let alone few other super groups which have sold well over 60 million records. There are those who still lamentably class Pearl Jam as nemeses to the ill-fated Nirvana, arguing that grunge is just ‘oh so 90s’ but there couldn’t be a bigger misconception. Pearl Jam might have been figureheads of that era in a way that, say, Blur were media darlings in the Britpop years, but their music has evolved and changed constantly. Whilst newer rock acts come to the stage with laptops and visual diversions, the pyrotechnics involved with Pearl jam are simply the band themselves. Resurgent after excellent top ten album Backspacer

there with the all time greats delivering a live set of unrelenting energy and spellbinding virtuosity. Theirs was a big concert alright, Vedder’s voice in all its rip-roaring ragged glory tearing through the grey skyline, and given extra rocket booster fuel some truly inventive guitar playing by Mike McCready in particular who should not go past unsung. There was no slip in energy levels from these 40-somethings who played for what would could have easily been 3 hours, taking in all the classics like Black, Porch, Nothingman, State of Love and Trust, Alive, Not for You (which featured Ben Harper on slide guitar), a cover of the late Joe Strummer’s Arms Aloft In Aberdeen and, as is the way with this most-fan loving bunch, a never-recordedbefore track. It wasn’t all just loud psychedelic rock of course. There were a few quieter moments of acoustic which were affecting too, proving that Pearl jam are far from one-dimensional. The newer material fitted in seamlessly with the rest of their enormous repertoire, which further denotes a band in complete mastery of their sound. And the way they make it all look so easy was simply explosive.

Johnny Clegg, Arno Carstens and Trenton And Free Radical HMV Forum, Kentish Town London, 19 June 2010 The South African music scene has never had it so good. With the eyes of the world fixed firmly on the country’s every move, football notwithstanding, the interest in music from this vibrant country is at an all-time high with many artists both established and upcoming getting unprecedented levels of exposure. Despite all the World Cup goings-on in South Africa, there were still nearly 2000 - predominantly South African - London-based punters who came, vuvezela-in-tow, to see Johnny Clegg celebrate 30 years in the music industry. He was playing to an adoring crowd and still showed no signs of age upsetting his white Zulu dance routine. He was introduced by South Africa’s new high commissioner Dr Zola Skweyiya, which underpins just how much Clegg has done to break down musical barriers in the country, especially in the turbulent 1980s. His songs still sparkle and their tales seemingly ageless. He played Osiyeza, Asimbonanga, Great Heart and Cruel Crazy Beautiful World which all sounded fresh after all these years despite the erratic sound quality in the beginning. Of course it was Scatterlings of Africa which struck the biggest chord, the audience finally showing some swagger in this nonseated venue.

Pa g 32 e

Clegg was also supported by a short acoustic set by Arno Carstens. He was greeted by some degree of stiffness by the crowd it seemed. Maybe it was just due to timing as he was put on first on the bill but there could have been little arguments against him not

putting in a fine voice. It was a very short set which ended with a moving stripped down version of his hit Another Universe. The event was the brainchild of Breathe Sunshine, and between these two stalwarts were fresh afro-beat/reggae group Trenton and Free Radical who filled the other support act slot. Front man and songwriter, Trenton leads this diverse group of predominantly African musicians. They had the crowd jumping to their blend of socially aware yet funny lyrics done in a laid-back hip-hop flow by Trenton, a danceable bass groove and tasteful electronic flourishes. Highlights included the track Tomorrow’s Day, an uplifting tune about how every day presents with it a new opportunity so there is no time to gloat; Mr Mandela whose catchy chorus praises the great one as being “a helluva fella”. The group proved more than able to hold their own being slotted between SA heavyweights who so often have keep on plugging the nostalgia. Trenton has collaborated with Maxi Jazz of Faithless fame and their soon-to-be-released debut is being produced by Dean James (Nitin Sawhney) and Craigie Dodds (Sugababes, Natty). This kind of eclecticism is sure to conjure up an interesting listen.

T

his month I am dying to share with you the secret of hydration and the amazing results that can be achieved. As a skin care professional in London I have found that the importance of Hydration is so often over looked. Living and working in this climate we are always either under air conditioners or surrounded by heating, not to mention the general build up of dirt and pollution. Summer is party season, alcohol and smoking dehydrate your skin the worst, but all these elements dehydrate the skin badly every day. If dehydration is not treated it can lead to premature ageing. Most people have severely dehydrated skin without even knowing it. The good news is dehydration is a skin condition, not a skin type, so it can easily be treated. .

Summer Radiance

So, its summer and you want to look your best! The secret to radiant skin is a good exfoliation and deep hydration. Dehydration leaves your skin feeling tight after cleansing and looking older. The skin is made up of tiny cells which contain 70% water. When these cells lack in water they have a shrivelled appearance therefore making slight fine lines appear on the skins surface. Those fine lines you often find on the sides of your face, across your forehead and even around the eyes, which people often mistake for ageing. When the skin is rehydrated – its plumps those cells up again. This leaves the skin looking younger and more radiant. Most people mistake these fine lines for dryness or ageing and put nourishing creams or

Unique Physique

Hi there and welcome back to my second round of getting you into shape. I hope that you have started following my basic advise that I recommended in the June Issue. For this month I will be focusing on more hints and tips with regards to eating and drinking habits as well as adding more basic exercise to improve you’re core and basic fitness. Focusing on Eating Habits. As in my previous advise and recommendations, stick to as much organic fresh fruits, salads and vegetables as is possible. Meats should be free range and organic. Meal portions should be smaller and more frequent, even up to as many as 5-6 meals per day, depending on the exercise regime that you are following. Meal contents should be more protein based such as fish, chicken and lean meat, preferably organic. A combination of steamed, raw or boiled vegetables and fresh salad and fruits can be added. The importance of the intake of sufficient water is underestimated and crucial. The average person should drink approximately 2 litres of water per day. Try drinking chilled water as it is taken in by your body much more rapidly. Basic exercise – Stomach-Tri Ceps-Fore Arm To add to my previous basic press-ups and sit-ups, which should be done daily, and increased as you’re abilities improve,I want to add the following three minor exercises.

1 Stomach exercise (Plank) Hold you’re self in a pressup position on you’re elbows for 30 seconds. Try to pull you’re belly button to your spinal cord(tighten you’re stomach mussels properly) Repeat this 5 times per session.

2

Triceps Dip Place body in a almost sitting position with you’re knees together at a 90 degree angle. You’re stomach should tense throughout this exercise to improve you’re core stability. Lower you’re body in the position as low as possible without touching the floor and raise up fully to exercise the triceps fully. Repeat this movement 2 x 20 sets.

3

Forearms Flick fingers forward times 50,sides times 50,up times 50.Repeat this exercise twice. Cool down by crossing the arms side to side whilst flicking the fingers as if playing piano. Repeat this action 30 times

Saturday 28th March 2009 My journey started on a Saturday morning at 05h00 am, yes I know what you are thinking, you are going to an island and that is the time that you have to get up! Well, it was absolutely worth it.

We took a short 3 hour flight from Johannesburg directly to Zanzibar Airport where we were met on arrival by loads of smiling faces and some local entertainers.

After a quick refreshing drink we were off to visit Planhotel Dream of Zanzibar. This hotel is not finished yet so we were very lucky to get a sneak preview. Once finished, I think this will be an absolutely stunning hotel with the most beautiful beach.

From there we proceeded to Mapenzi Beach Club. Situated about 45 km’s from the airport this hotel blends into the natural environment of the surrounding landscape covering an area of 4 hectares blessed with a long white sandy beach and a tropical garden of palms and colourful bougainvillea. This resort included everything you could possibly think of to eat and drink. You have to try the local SERENGETI beer but be careful of the KILIMANJARO beer!! Water sports are offered, however I would suggest that you take your own snorkelling equipment with you. Some of the water sports on offer (are at an additional cost) which include: Windsurfing, Blokart, Wakeboard, Waterski, Banana and Tube Riding, Bicycle hire and a floodlit Tennis Courts. They also offer tours and excursions like snorkelling trips to Mnemba Island, swimming with dolphins and turtles and of course a trip to Stone Town.

I think that it is really worth your while going with a local guide to Stone Town, you can go on your own but there is so much history you would not get to know if you go by yourself. This three & a half-hour tour starts with a visit to Zanzibar’s colourful market. Alive with the buzz of locals bartering fresh vegetables and baskets of tropical fruit, amongst the heady smell of Jack Fruit (and many other exotic fruits). We continued on to the site of the Cathedral built in 1874. The Cathedral signifies an important time in Zanzibar’s history and stands on the site of a past slave market. Its high altar stands on the exact site of the whipping post. Slavery was abolished in 1873 through a decree passed by the, then current Sultan

of Zanzibar. From here we visited the residence of the late Sultans of Zanzibar, Tip Tip House, the Old Fort, Peoples Palace and the House of Wonders, full of intrigue and vivid history from a bygone era. The tour ends with a stroll through the narrow streets of the old Stone Town, the heart of Zanzibar’s vivacious history.

Some tips: On arrival you have to pay US$50 in cash for your entry visa, this must be the exact amount as the airport officials will not give change. On departure you have to have US$30 once again in cash the exact amount for airport departure tax. Do not take photographs of the local women if you have not asked for their permission, they do get very offended. Women are frowned upon for wearing revealing clothes; try to keep the shoulders and knees covered when walking in towns and villages. Remember to get your Yellow Fever certificate at least 10 days prior to departure. Do not drink the tap water!

Zanzibar is a colourful place filled with the most amazing sounds, sights and smells. You cannot help but fall in love with it. Will I go back? Most definitely!

If you need any more information or would like to make a booking please contact me and I will gladly assist you.

Tri Nations Rugby 2010

The Tri Nations is an international rugby union competition that is contested annually by Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The competition is organized by SANZAR, a consortium formed by the three countries’ rugby governing bodies – the Australian Rugby Union, the New Zealand Rugby Union and the South African Rugby Union. These three teams have dominated international rankings in recent years and some consider the Tri Nations to be the toughest competition in international rugby. The Tri Nations will become the Four Nations in 2012 should the inclusion of Argentina as the fourth team go ahead. Argentina has been invited to join but there are a number of conditions that they have to fulfil. The series is played on a home-and-away basis. From the first tournament in 1996 through 2005, the three teams played each other twice. Since then, each team has played the others three times, except in the Rugby World Cup year of 2007 when the series reverted to a double round-robin. Since the inception of the series the games played between Australia and New Zealand also go toward determining the winner of the Bledisloe Cup each year. The Freedom Cup is contested between New Zealand and South Africa, and the Mandela Challenge Plate between Australia and South Africa.
