How to register and vote abroad The Electoral Amendment Act 2013 (see Electoral Act 73 of 1998 including Regulations) gives all South African citizens the right to register and vote abroad in national elections. Can I vote abroad? If you are a registered voter and either live abroad or will be abroad on election day in South Africa (7 May 2014), and you have valid South African ID and a valid South African passport, you are eligible to vote abroad. How do I vote abroad? Step 1: Confirm registration The voters' roll for the 2014 National and Provincial Elections has now closed. Confirm your registration status online at www.elections.org.za/content/Forvoters/My-voter-registration-details. If you live abroad, but previously registered in South Africa, you are still registered. When checking your registration details, you may see a message that indicates that you're required to re-register due to changes to your voting district boundaries, but this message only applies to voters living in South Africa. Registered voters now living abroad are not required to re-register. Step 2: Notify us of your intention to vote abroad You must notify us of your intention to vote abroad, and select the foreign mission at which you intend to vote by submitting a VEC10. The VEC10 can be submitted from 25 February until midnight (UTC+02:00) on 12 March 2014. If you do not submit a VEC10 to notify us of your intention to vote abroad, you will not be able to vote. Go to www.elections.org.za/content/For-Voters/Notify-the-IEC-of-yourintention-to-vote-outside-South-Africa-(VEC-10)/ and complete the notification online. Once we have confirmed that you are eligible to vote, we will send you an email or text message to let you know if and when you can vote at the foreign mission you selected.
Step 3: Vote If you submitted your VEC10 and received an email or text message from us indicating that you qualify to vote abroad, you will be able to vote at the foreign mission you selected. * Take your green, bar-coded South African ID book; smartcard ID; or valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC) AND your valid South African passport or temporary passport to the foreign mission indicated on the confirmation we sent you via email or text. You can only cast your vote on the specific date (usually 7 days before election day in South Africa) indicated on your confirmation and during the selected mission's normal working hours (please phone them to confirm). Important: Under no circumstances can votes be cast on any other date. * Your thumbnail is marked with indelible ink. * Your ID book is stamped. * You receive the national ballot paper. * You mark the ballot in secret, place and seal the ballot in the unmarked envelope given to you. * The unmarked envelope is placed in another envelope that is marked with your name and ID number. The use of two envelopes is to ensure the secrecy of your ballot (the outer envelope Is discarded before counting). * The envelope is placed in a secure ballot box for special votes. Can I vote before I leave South Africa? If you live in South Africa and are a registered voter, but will be abroad on the day that voting takes place in South Africa, you can either vote abroad on the date specified in the timetable (usually a week before election day in SA), or you can apply for a special vote. A special vote allows you to vote at your voting station in South Africa on the date/s stipulated in the election timetable (published after the President has proclaimed the election date) for special voting in SA (likely to be a day or two before election day). To apply for a special vote, you can make an appointment at your local IEC office. Special votes applications are only accepted during the period specified in the election timetable (published after the President has proclaimed the election date). Why I Fired My Secretary! Last week was my birthday and I didn't feel very well waking up that morning. I went downstairs for breakfast hoping my wife would be pleasant and say "Happy Birthday", and possibly have a present for me. As it turned out, she barely said good morning, let alone, "Happy Birthday". I thought....well, that's marriage for you, but maybe the kids will remember. My kids came down for breakfast and didn't say a word. So, when I left for the office, I was feeling pretty low and somewhat despondent. As I walked into my office, my secretary Jane said, "Good morning, Boss, Happy Birthday". It felt a little better that at least someone had remembered. I worked until one o'clock and then Jane knocked on my door and said, "You know, it's such a beautiful day outside, and it's your birthday, let's go out to lunch, just you and me". I said, "Thanks, Jane, that's the greatest thing I've heard all day. Let's go". We went to lunch. but we didn't go where we normally would go. We dined instead at a little place with a private table. We had two martinis each and I enjoyed the meal tremendously. On the way back to the office Jane said, "You know, it's such a beautiful day....we don't need to go back to the office, do we?" I responded, "I guess not. What do you have in mind?" She said, "Let's go to my apartment". After arriving at her apartment Jane turned to me and said, "Boss, if you don't mind, I'm going to step into the bedroom for a moment. I'll be right back." "OK", I nervously replied. She went into the bedroom and after a couple of minutes, she came out carrying a huge birthday cake......followed by my wife, kids and dozens of my friends and co-workers, all singing "Happy Birthday". The Georgia Aquarium and Downtown Atlanta Rarely has the opening of an aquarium elicited such excitement and intrigue as the new one in Atlanta did in 2006. The $250 million (£162 million) gift of Bernard Marcus to the city where his company, Home Depot, began, it is the world’s largest aquarium. Located in downtown Atlanta, traditionally the domain of office workers, not tourists, it is a nine-acre state-of-the-art facility with a staggering eight million gallons of both fresh and salt water that contains more than 100,000 different animals, representing over 500 of the planet’s marine species. The aquarium is divided into several marine-life areas. One of the most popular, perhaps owing to its appearance in sultry Georgia, is the Cold Water Quest, a habitat for creatures that thrive in the world’s icier seas. Here, you’ll see beluga whales, California sea lions, African black-footed penguins, a giant Pacific octopus and Japanese spider crabs. The Ocean Voyager is another crowd pleaser, where stingrays, whale sharks (the largest species of fish in the world) and groupers swim gracefully through a 100-foot-long saltwater tunnel. Next to the aquarium is the brand-new World of Coca-Cola Pavilion, an exuberant tribute to the world’s most popular soft drink. Investigate the roots of the civil rights movement The mile-and-a-half stretch of downtown Atlanta’s Auburn Avenue, known as Sweet Auburn, is the birthplace of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and where the city’s vibrant African American community came into its own during the 1890s. During the years of enforced racial segregation in the early 20th century, Auburn Avenue was so prosperous that local civic leader John Wesley Dobbs declared it the “richest Negro street in the World”, and the nickname Sweet Auburn stuck. The neighbourhood fell into decline following World War II and slid into an especially bad state by the 1970s, the victim of depopulation, crime and the construction of Interstate 75/85, which crudely split the district in two. It earned its National Historic Landmark designation in 1976 and the Historic District Development Corporation soon formed to reverse its fortunes. Since then, residents have started moving back into the neighbourhood, and a number of businesses are following. Today, many of Sweet Auburn’s most significant buildings are open for tours. Start off at the African American Panoramic Experience, an engaging, highly interactive museum with a re-creation of the Yates & Milton Drug Store, opened in 1923 as one of the city’s first prominent black-owned businesses. At the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, park rangers lead tours of the King Birth Home as well as the Ebenezer Baptist Church Museum, where three generations of the King family preached—it continues to serve a large congregation today. Another important site is the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, which his widow, the late Coretta Scott King, established to help spread her husband’s teachings. Freedom Plaza, across the street, is the site of King’s white-marble tomb, inscribed with his words “Free at last. Free at last. Thank God Almighty I’m free at last.” His wife was interred here following her death in February, 2006.

A pretty ribbon added to a simple chain of links, topped off with a well-crafted bow brings together this unique bracelet. If you can't get your hands on one of these link chains, you can go ahead and make a similar one with a twist and tie rope. Take two of them; gold and silver usually make a great combination, and make knots at small intervals (say around one or one and a half inches apart). As of the rings, you don't need classy or beautiful ones; instead you need to look out for an assortment of simple and more colorful ones. Loop all of them in the elastic and secure it well!

For this, you will need four to five chunky stonefinish beads and two strings (ideally brown or black). Start with knotting the two strings and slipping a bead into one of them. Once the bead is tightly in place, knot the strings together and once again, put a bead in one of the strings. Continue this process till you finish the entire length of the bracelet. This is an easy, creative, and economic option for a friendship bracelet. If you don't have stone-finish beads, you can always use the same concept with different materials. It's more of a vague idea; you can find many ways to better it or work your way around it!
✦ To make a three-color braid, take three thick strings of three different colors. ✦ Tie these three strings together on one end with the help of a knot. ✦ Place this knot on a work surface; something which will hold it firm, giving you grip to tie it with the correct pressure -- clipboards work well for this purpose. ✦ Once you have the knot fixed to a surface, you can start braiding your bracelet, like a simple hair braid. Those who aren't aware of the exact steps for hair braiding can follow the instructions mentioned below. ✦ After clamping the knot somewhere, you will have three strings; let's call them A, B and C from left to right. ✦ You can begin by taking A over B; the resulting order is then BAC. ✦ Next, place C over A; the order then becomes BCA. ✦ Once again, place B over C; making the order CBA. ✦ Take A over B; the order should be CAB. ✦ Complete the entire braid in a similar fashion. ✦ Note: Keep cross-checking with the mentioned order at every step, so you can rectify your mistakes, if any, at that particular stage itself.

South African Chutney Chicken Ingredients: 12 chicken thighs 1 (12 ounce) jar hot chutney 1 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). 2. In a medium bowl, combine chutney and dry soup mix. Mix together. Season chicken pieces with salt and pepper to taste. 3 . Place seasoned chicken pieces in a 9x13 inch baking dish and pour chutney mixture over chicken. 4 . Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 60 minutes, or until chutney sauce has turned brown and crunchy.
Traditional South African Milk Tart Ingredients: Crust 5 ounces butter, room temperature 1/2 cup sugar 2 eggs 2 1/4 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 pinch salt
Filling
4 1/2 cups milk 3 tablespoons butter 3 tablespoons flour 3 tablespoons cornstarch 3/4 cup sugar 3 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons sugar
Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. 2. For crust: Cream butter and sugar. 3. Add eggs, then flour, salt and baking powder. 4. Using ½ of dough, press into pie plate. 5. Repeat with other half of dough in other pie plate. 6. Prick all over with fork and bake for 10 minutes. 7. No further baking is required. 8. For filling: Boil milk and butter, add remaining ingredients (thin flour and cornstarch out with milk first). 9. Mix well. 10. Whisk until custard thickens. 11. Pour into baked shells and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.

5 Tips to Building an Employee Referral Program As a business owner, your employees are your most important customers. Without engaged, passionate staffers, a business will struggle to succeed. Therefore, it is vitally important to attract only the best when it comes to talent. Any efforts you put in to assemble an effective team will pay off in returning customers later on. The best way to build a stable of rock star employees is with a strategic employee referral program, or ERP. Below are a few things to consider when building your initiative.
Building an Employee Referral Program
Offer a Juicy Incentive By participating in a referral program, your employees are basically recruiting for you. Make this effort worth the time by offering incentives. Money is always appreciated (maybe $500 for an entry-level hire that stays at least six months; $1,000 for a senior-level hire). If you are low on funds, consider offering paid days off, free lunches or even work-related rewards visible to other employees. For example, if the referrer has long complained about feeling uncomfortable in his or her desk chair, spring for a new one of the Herman Miller variety. Not only will your referring employee feel pampered, but the daily presence of the swanky chair will entice other employees to bring their best talent forward, too. Another idea is to offer raffle prizes. Maybe compile the names of all referring employees and pull out one name per quarter. Offer that person a huge prize (maybe a trip to Vegas, if your budget allows) and watch as you receive an influx of referrals the following quarter. Build a Sense of Urgency If more than 50 percent of your business happens around the holidays, convey to your best employees a sense of urgency in connecting with seasonal hires and offer an incentive with an expiration date. Make it Easy to Refer The easier it is for an employee to refer, the more referrals you’re going to get. Forget written referral forms. Instead, create an email address specific to referrals to help you keep track of them. Take Every Referral Seriously It’s easy to empathize with the employee who refers his or her best friend only to never hear back about the status of the application. Don’t do this to your employees. Regardless if you hire the candidate or not, take every referral seriously and, at the very least, follow-up with your employee on why you did or did not feel that the referral was a good fit for the company. Promote Your ERP Make it fun. Pass out t-shirts with your company logo and “We’re hiring!” printed on the back. Host an ERP launch party in your office, or better yet, in a local bar and tell your employees to invite their friends (ahem, future candidates). Hang posters on the walls of your office that promote the program. Now watch the referrals roll in.

A Traveller’s Guide to South African Slang (Part 1) Every country has its peculiar turns of phrase – quirks that give local languages flavour, colour and character. But unless you’re a native speaker, local slang can be a tricky to grasp, let alone use. South Africa, with its 11 official languages, is blessed with a rich slang culture that can be quite daunting for foreign visitors – heck, even some residents flounder when faced with some of the more obscure lingo. To help out travellers from foreign climes (as well as the odd sheltered South African) here’s a directory of common, and not so common, South Africanisms. A. Ag (the g is guttural, so pronounce it in the back of your throat): Oh, as in “Oh no” or “Oh man” or “Oh bloody hell”. Ag man: Oh man, with more than a hint of frustration, irritation or annoyance; e.g. Ag man, what did you go and do that for? Ag shame: Shame is a South Africanism for pity or sympathy, but it can also be used to indicate cuteness. E.g., Ag shame, did you hurt yourself? And, Ag shame, he got his exam results today and they weren’t good. And, Ag shame, did you see that fluffy puppy? Arvie: Afternoon, e.g., We’ll pop round for tea sometime this arvie.
B. Babelas – bubba-luss: Hangover, often the consequence of a really good braai. Bakkie – buck-key: South African version of the pickup truck. Also used to refer to plastic containers like Tupperware, e.g., What must I do with the leftovers? Sommer stick them in a bakkie. Befok: Cool, exciting, wild, crazy, e.g., That motorcycle stunt was befok. And, Steve has had too much sign, it’s made him befok. Given its origins (fok – English fuck), it’s not used in polite company. Biltong: Spiced, cured and dehydrated meat, similar to (but much tastier than) beef jerky. It’s usually made from beef, game and ostrich. A favourite TV snack, and almost essential for any rugby match. Bladdy: Damn, e.g., I can’t believe the bladdy referee gave that penalty. Bliksem – blik-sim: To hit or punch, e.g., I’ll bliksem you if you eat my biltong. Also used derogatively, like bastard; e.g., that bliksem stole my bakkie. It can also be used for emphasis, e.g., a bliksems high building. Boet: Brother, usually used in reference to friends, or any male companion. E.g., Hey boet, did you bring the biltong for the big game tonight? Boerewors – boo-rah-vors (roll the r) (wors for short): South African farm-style sausage commonly braaied and eaten on a roll with tomato sauce and mustard. Bosbefok (or bossies or bos): Nuts, crazy, insane, usually used to refer to someone who has gone nuts or lost the plot. E.g., She went bos when she saw what the muddy dog did to her white sofa. Braai – brr-rye (roll that r): Barbecue, when women spend hours in the kitchen preparing salads, meat and puddings and men spend hours getting a fire just right so that they can cook the meat and give the women a “day off”. Alcohol is usually in abundant supply, especially beer. Bru - brew: Similar to boet. C. Café – pronounced the French way, but completely different: “Corner” shop or superette where you can buy absolutely anything, except alcohol. Charf: Flirt, e.g., Check that china charfing my chick. China: (Alternate spelling Chyna) Friend, pal, buddy. Considered outdated in some circles where bru is more common. Check: See, look, pay attention. E.g., Check here my china, this is my chick, so back off. And, Check this weird looking butterfly.
ADHD or Too Much Sugar?
Could unruly kids with ADHD-like problems be hypersensitive to sugar and wheat? Here’s yet another story about what can happen when parents try to exclude such foods: “OK, let’s try this. We’ll skip wheat and sugar. We started at the beginning of the school year. No wheat flour and no sugar (either at school or at home). Three days later we already noticed a significant difference and now, 4 weeks later, we’re not the only ones cheering… The original story here: ADHD or Too Much Sugar? (Google translated from Swedish) Many experts have previously dismissed the association between sugar and ADHD. Studies designed to give children small amounts of sugar (up to a pint – half a liter – of soda) have not shown any significant short-term effect. But the effect of long-term use of large amounts of bad carbohydrates is unknown. And there’s a high-quality study that demonstrated a significant improvement from avoiding, among other things, sugar and wheat flour. There are scientists who believe that ADHD symptoms are similar to withdrawal symptoms from drugs and thus may present because the child is addicted to junk food/sugar. Route 66 It’s a route so legendary that celebrated author John Steinbeck named it The Mother Road in his novel The Grapes of Wrath. The highway built in the 1920s that once served as a main thoroughfare from east to west, still beckons travelers seeking a classic piece of Americana. The historic Route 66 runs from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California and crosses the states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Spanning a distance of more than 2,000 miles, Route 66 passes through a cross section of the USA that lets you see the country’s heart and soul. Traverse the urban streets of Chicago and St. Louis, take in the expansive Grand Canyon, experience the Southwest’s Native American communities, and hit the beach in Santa Monica without leaving the route. This well-worn, fabled road has a history worth noting. In the mid-1940s, Route 66 wound through small towns across the Midwest and Southwest. It was often called the “Main Street of America” with its mom-and-pop shops, cafes, motels and gas stations. In the late 1950s, the old Route 66 was bypassed as high-speed interstate highways were built. Still, pop culture pumped more life into the road with Nat King Cole’s song, “Route 66” and the 1960s “Route 66” TV show starring a Chevrolet Corvette. The Pixar movie Cars was inspired by a road trip on Route 66, and was almost named “Route 66.” In 1984, Route 66 was decommissioned and the old route, now designated as Historic Route 66, still maintains its original charisma. Roadside attractions include a treasure trove of 1950s nostalgia from general stores to diners to quirky motels equipped with neon signs—all capturing the glory days like a weathered Polaroid snapshot. Lodging in these kitschy motels is a memorable way to experience the nostalgia. The Munger Moss Hotel in Lebanon, Missouri is quintessential Route 66 stop, while the novelty-laced Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, Arizona lets you “sleep in a Wigwam.” El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, New Mexico, also known as “Home of the Movie Stars” catered to the likes of celebrities like John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart.
Landmarks include the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago, Illinois, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri and the Mojave National Preserve in Nipton, California. On the novelty side, you can see the “World’s Largest Concrete Totem Pole” near Foyil, Oklahoma and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The Ariston Café is a member of the Route 66 Hall of Fame and a popular stop for food in Litchfield, Illinois. Further down the road in Amarillo, Texas, a famous spot called Big Texan serves massive 72 oz. Steaks. Once you reach the California coast, the Santa Monica Pier marks the original end of the route. However, traveling to Los Angeles and Sunset Boulevard through the oldest part of the city, the Spanish colonial Olvera Street is a particularly wonderful add-on. What to bring: an appetite for the eclectic, an open mind and a travel journal to record your chance encounters, hidden gems and favorite stops.

State-by-state guide to motorcycle helmet laws Before you head out on the highway looking for adventure make sure it isn’t a ticket that comes your way. This guide details the helmet laws state by state to help riders follow the rules. Of course, the safest choice is to always wear a traditional (non-novelty) helmet that complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218. Besides getting a ticket for not wearing a helmet in certain states, there is even more incentive—not properly protecting yourself could increase your risk of injury or even death. Just 20 states, plus the District of Columbia, have universal motorcycle helmet laws requiring usage despite the fact that studies show that helmets can help reduce your injury risk in a crash. In 2008, helmets are estimated to have saved over 1,800 lives. Another 800 more lives could’ve been saved if helmets had been worn. (See our 10 safety tips for new riders.) In states that institute laws, deaths and injuries from motorcycle accidents typically drop. Unfortunately, the opposite also proves true when such laws are repealed. In 2010, 98 percent of motorcyclists riding in states with helmet laws were wearing them. In states without the laws, helmet use was just 48 percent. Getting more riders to wear helmets is important: As more motorcyclists have taken to the road over the last few years, rider fatalities have grown even more rapidly.
