Readers!
Well Summer is officially here, and while I hope you all had an absolutely amazing Memorial Weekend, I want talk more about what to do these next few months! Summer is and always has been one of my favorite seasons, and for one very simple, completely irresistible reason, it fills me with an overwhelming feeling of freedom, and joy. It might be the high temperatures, it might be the bathing suits and cocktails on the beach, but I truly think it is the sense of adventure and youth that this time of year awakens in us all. Let's be honest, half of the things that we do during the summer, we really could do any time of year, but there is something about this specific season that makes everything feel better. Summer is a time for romance and laughter, so don't forget to stop and just have a little fun this season. I know that many of us, myself included, will still be working our regular 9 to 5 while the days of summer get longer and the nights get warmer, but always remember, don't get so busy making a living, that you forget to make a life! The Best Places to Live in the United States Big cities offer a lot -- plenty to do, culture, public transportation -- but they also have their downfalls, like noise, pollution, higher expenses and, of course, a lot less space. And small towns can have all of the perks of metropolitan areas, plus that great "small town" feeling. You know the one we're talking about. Plus, they often have a really strong sense of community. We have looked at a survey done in 2013 focusing on the best places to live and have come up with the following:

You may have read about what I have created in Reality Rally and now produce with over 400 volunteers in the past few editions of this wonderful magazine, SA Expat USA Edition. As you might know I am an ExPat from South Africa and I do believe that the success of my amazing event is due to my South African upbringing which instilled in me drive, perseverance, creativeness and my "Can Do" attitude. My leadership skills comes from being Head Girl and being the Captain of several sports teams in that training ground we called South African schooling. My need to make a difference in my world and my spirit of caring came from my African soul and my adopting the philosophy of Ubuntu at an early age. The platform I was given to be able to use all of who I became growing up in South Africa was the American stage where YOU can do anything you want to do if you only believe in yourself and what you are capable of doing. This truly is the land of the free and I have taken it and run with it. The creators of this publication have taken it and run with it. Think what YOU can do too. Use who you are, an ExPat living in this wonderful country. We have it all. From a seed of an idea in Gabon Africa after I played on the TV show Survivor, this is what I led in 2014 with a dedicated Production Team of 50. We have a whole lot of "Fun for Funds" for Michelle's Place, Breast Cancer Resource Center during a 3 day event. We took it and ran with it all over the world.

We have 2 parties at Wineries, over 120 Reality TV Stars to meet the public, an Amazing Race type game all over Old Town Temecula and a Celebrity Chefs Showcase just like you see on TV.
We will line up our Reality Stars starting in October. Sponsor outreach stars in June, volunteers call out in January. I want a big South African presence so I am looking for an African performance group who would like to sponsor a performance at our opening Celebrity Reception evening at Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula for about 1000 people. I would also love to see many South Africans who care about charity and making a difference where they can and want to cheer on a fellow South African. Talking Dog For Sale A man sees a sign in front of a house: “Talking Dog for Sale.” He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard. He goes into the backyard and sees a black mutt just sitting there. “You talk?” he asks. “Yep,” the mutt replies. “So, what’s your story?” The mutt looks up and says, “Well, I discovered this gift pretty young and I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.” “I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. But, the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger and I wanted to settle down.” “So, I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals.” “Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.” The man is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. The owner says, “Ten dollars.” The guy says, “This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?” The owner replies, “He’s such a liar. He didn’t do any of that stuff.”

Eben Venter Biographical info Eben Venter was raised on a sheep farm in Eastern Cape, South Africa. He read philosophy at university and migrated to Australia in 1986 when a State of Emergency was declared. Venter has published nine works of fiction (six novels, two short story collections and a column & recipe book.) His last novel, Santa Gamka (2009), was awarded three South African literary awards: the W.A. Hofmeyr prize (for the fourth time), the M-Net and the ATKV prize. His work has been translated in English, Dutch and German. His last English novel, Trencherman, was long listed for the Sunday Times (South Africa) prize, 2009.
He presses the button to activate the screen of the CCTV system: two sharply pointed dog's ears. A wolfhound; except that a wolfhound can't reach that high. He keeps the button pressed in and peers at the bluegrey night scene of the pavement and the section of the road covered by the cameras at the gate. The dog's head, abnormally large, stares back at him. There's something about the hairiness of the dog hairs and the oddly impassive gaze of the dark pin-hole eyes that doesn't seem quite right. And where's the rest of the dog-creature's body? He knows who it is even before the deliberately-gruffened voice comes over the intercom. 'Matt,' says the dog-muzzle, 'it's me. Please open up.' Mattheus Duiker, the only son of Benjamin Duiker, the former owner of Duiker's Motors, opens the gate of their Cape Town mansion to his lover, Jack. Disguised as a wolf, Jack invades the intimate darkness in which Matt is waiting for his father to die and for his own life to take off. Shiny-eyed at the prospect, the two young men sneak past the study where the old blind man, dwelling on melancholy attachments and sombre suspicions, sits listening for the footfall of death. Eben Venter's novel is an unsparing investigation into the relation between a father and his son, into the disenfranchisement of a man who can glean scant wisdom from the past to equip him for life in a rapidly changing dispensation. Passionate. Disturbing. A masterly unravelling of the fragile thread of feeling - Eben Venter at the top of his game. http://bookslive.co.za/bookfinder/ean/9780624055341

ZAUSA Shorts Project
Calling all writers! ZAUSA is proud to announce that the organization will be commissioning a series of short films to be workshopped and produced entirely by its members. PART 1: Writing the script As South African’s we all have the passion to share our stories and perspectives with others. This is the call to action for our writers and storytellers to put their creative powers to work and write a short film. Each short will be workshopped at a writers brunch with the help and guidance of industry pros. The ZaUSA board will then vote on the first script to be produced entirely by its members. Those scripts not selected for the first production will be further workshopped for consideration for the following shorts. Our goal is to keep our members actively working together, networking, and creating. Through this venture we’ll be able to promote ZaUSA as an organization, and you as credited collaborators, whilst building a home for our filmmaking community. PART 2: Producing the short Once the script is locked the writer will select a director from within ZaUSA. We’ll source the producing team, headed by Brent Rumble, and the production crew tasked with bringing the story to life. The scripts will be produced on a shoestring budget with financing coming from a social fundraiser. WHAT TO WRITE? The themes and possibilities are endless! The one unifying element we all share in ZaUSA is our identity. It is for this reason alone that the first script should in some way explore the theme of Identity. What does is mean to be me? you? us? African? American? Gay? Straight? WHATEVER! Identity should be used only as a point of departure, let your story evolve any way you want, just remember, we’re working on a tiny budget – so keep the script under 10 pages – and keep explosions and aliens for your Warner Brothers blockbuster ;) Rough draft deadline: Saturday June 14, 2014 Please send a PDF of your script to brentrumble@gmail.com http://zausa.co/
It's amazing how much talent South Africa has been exporting internationally over the years. Many a talented artist is yet to be discovered but we are fortunate to have discovered a rising star, Zarni, now residing in the US. Zarni has received a number of awards and recognition from celebrity perfomars such as John Mayer Through the wonders of technology we managed to get hold of Zarni to ask her a few questions about her roots, her life and her art. We asked her about her childhood and how she ended up loving music as much as she does and ultimately ending up in the US
I was born in Springs, but I spent most of my time in Centurion- where I attended Hennopspark Laerskool . My dad, stepmom and step siblings lived in Midrand so I spent every other weekend there with them. Music was always a part of my life and I started piano lessons at 6 and was doing all of the music talent shows and choirs at school. We moved away from South Africa when I was 10 and I was very sad to leave my wonderful family behind as well as beautiful South Africa. I've returned once a year for the last 14 years and want to make it more regular in the future As I said, music has always been in my life. My mom, Zelda de Wet, was a fairly active singer/songwriter many years ago and she always inspired me to write, sing and play so from a very young age, I was trying my luck with all of those. My step dad got a job offer here in the States and my mom and step dad felt that the US would open many doors for us as a family and for me with my music
John Mayer says “I just want to hear it again" of
this 25 year old Singer/Songwriter originally from South Africa. Currently Im working on an EP (6 song CD) with a wonderful producer in Vancouver Canada. Tyler Johnson has been working with artists for a long time, developing them and helping them to the next level. He works with a few artist that are signed to Nettwerk Records (that released Sarah McLachlan, fun. and many more) so his speciality is taking artists like myself and helping to develop their sound. After we release the EP, I will most likely do a tour in the US. I would also like to get more involved in the South African music scene. I've done a handful of shows there but I will be working on promoting the EP there and eventually touring as well. We believe that Zarni is going to go all the way and will become a world famous super star (with South African roots natuurlik) B.T.W she's enaged guys !!

Ways to Make Balloon Animals Balloons are a great idea for decorating party venues. Especially if it is your toddler's birthday, having inflated balloons in the shape of animals at the venue will just take the party to a whole different level of fun and excitement
Making Tip While making balloon animals, preferably use new instead of old, stored ones. Older balloons have the probability to pop when you inflate or twist them. DOG The number one favorite among kids, the party won't get started without the dog. This is a very popular shape and one of the easiest to make. Once you get this shape right, a foundation for making the rest of the animals of the jungle is laid. You will just need a #260 balloon to create this fun piece of art.
Instructions 1.Take a #260 balloon and inflate it. At the tail end, leave 4 inches uninflated. 2. Now, from the nozzle end, twist the balloon for about six inches. 3. Now, squeeze the two parts of the folded balloon about 2 inches from the fold. 4.Twist the squeezed portion further; two or three twists should do the trick. These are the ears of the doggy, and the knot is its nose. 5.Now, for the front and back legs. They are made in the same way as the ears. 6.Fold the balloon an inch below the twist that formed the ears. Twist the balloon to form the front legs of the dog. 7.Last but not the least, fold the balloon 2 inches away from the twist that formed the front legs. Now, twist. Your happy helper doggy is ready. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/free-balloon-twisting-instructions.html

Seasonal Employment / Part-Time Information For many retailers, the holiday shopping season is a “make or break” period which can define their bottom lines for the entire year. Temporary and part-time employment spikes as retailers and other businesses increase staffing to accommodate their seasonal increase in business. Workers not familiar with this sort of employment, and employers unaccustomed to hiring part-time and/or seasonal employees, may not be fully aware of the regulations surrounding such employment. We offer the following information to help guide both employers and employees through this busy season in an informed manner. The mission of the DOL’s Wage & Hour Division (WHD) is to promote and to achieve compliance with labor standards to protect and enhance the welfare of the nation’s workforce. To that end, WHD is responsible for enforcing some of the nation’s most comprehensive federal labor laws on topics including the minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and child labor. Collectively, the laws enforced by Wage and Hour cover most private, state and local government employment throughout the United States and its territories, and protect over 135 million workers in more than 7.3 million establishments nationwide. One of the laws enforced by Wage and Hour is the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which requires employers to pay covered non-exempt employees at least the federal minimum wage for all hours worked, and overtime pay for all hours worked over 40 in a work week. For general information about the FLSA, including its application to tipped employees, please see WHD’s web page at http://www.dol.gov/whd/flsa/,and Fact Sheet #15: Tipped Employees Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) at http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs15.pdf

The Texas Potjie Festival – An Annual Cultural Celebration Every Labor Day weekend there is a big stirring amongst South Africans in Texas… well… to be honest, it’s much wider than Texas… it’s all over the United States, and in some cases even around the world! Why? It’s the annual Texas Potjie Festival!
Preparations for this annual “potjiekos” festival begin weeks in advance. Some people make biltong, droëwors, boerewors, bake rusks, koeksisters, and many other traditional goodies in the weeks leading up to it. People start arriving at the campground on the Friday. Some stay in cabins, others in RVs, and the rest in tents. Then the braai fires are lit and the party is on! Most people “kuier” (visit) around the braai until the early morning hours on Saturday, catching up on news with all the friends they made at the previous Potjie. Saturday is the boerewors competition, and Saturday evening is the big “sokkie”. Sunday is the day all the potjiekos competitors have been waiting for! The food preparation starts after church and by the afternoon the whole campground is filled with the wonderful aroma of the various potjies, carefully nursed by their expert creators. After the judging is over, everyone shares in all the potjies to get real taste of all the hard work of the afternoon. Don’t miss out on the annual Texas Potjie Festival. It is a blast that you won’t forget anytime soon! http://texaspotjie.com/

New Study: Does Sugar Cause Heart Disease?
Are today’s high rates of overconsumption of sodas and other sugar sources a direct cause of heart disease? It’s possible, more and more people think so, and a new study gives this idea further support. * CBS News: Too much sugar linked to fatal heart disease, even in those who are not obese * BBC News: Sweet tooth linked to heart attacks Of course, today’s study only shows statistical associations. In this study, people who consumed large amounts of sugar, for example sodas, got heart disease more often. Correlation doesn’t prove causation, so this doesn’t mean that this study has proven what is cause and effect. However, this study did demonstrate a linear association: the more sugar the greater the risk. This study is just another piece of the puzzle, and more and more people are starting to see a clear picture, and taking the health hazards stemming from excessive sugar consumption seriously. Prof. Laura Schmidt at University of California San Francisco writes in a commentary in JAMA: We are in the midst of a paradigm shift in research on the health effects of sugar, one fueled by extremely high rates of added sugar overconsumption in the American public. Past concerns revolved around obesity and dental caries as the main health hazards. Overconsumption of added sugars has long been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, under the old paradigm, it was assumed to be a marker for unhealthy diet or obesity. The new paradigm views sugar overconsumption as an independent risk factor in CVD as well as many other chronic diseases, including diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis, and dementia—all linked to metabolic perturbations involving dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance. The new paradigm hypothesizes that sugar has adverse health effects above any purported role as “empty calories” promoting obesity. Too much sugar does not just make us fat; it can also make us sick. The fight against cigarettes has almost been won in the West. Now the fight against sugar is starting to get serious. The health benefits may be at least as great.
