When it comes to education,

MORE matters. Sage’s motto since 1916 “esse. scire. facere.” expresses three timeless imperatives: “to be. to know. to do.” To celebrate our centennial, we ambitiously celebrate MORE: MORE excellence, MORE opportunity, MORE innovation, MORE of the forward thinking that has brought us to this moment —the perfect “now” for you to join a new generation of Sage students. Get ready to:

Be MORE. Know MORE. Do MORE.

In 1949, Russell Sage College in Troy opened a co-ed division in downtown Albany to serve veterans returning from World War II, state workers, and others seeking an education related to workplace needs. In 1957, the “Albany Division” officially became a private junior college of its own named Sage Junior College of Albany. Two years later, the college relocated to its present charming campus, graduating 49 students and establishing its reputation as student-centered and responsive to the changing workplace. Sage grew rapidly, adding its signature art and design program in the 1970s. As the new millennium brought new educational and

workforce needs, and in response to students who wished to “go farther” at Sage, the junior college expanded to become the fouryear degree granting Sage College of Albany in 2002. Today, SCA remains steadfast in its commitment to practical learning through the full involvement of our students. MISSION Sage College of Albany is an undergraduate college of applied studies that prepares men and women for life’s commitments and for work in a constantly changing world.

“As an artist my goal is to never be silent. I want to use my voice to illustrate, through my work, the struggles of today and spark change to improve the condition of this world.” KHIDR JOSEPH SCA ’17 B.F.A. in Photography Activist, artist, documentary filmmaker

BE MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED Visionary leader, intrepid entrepreneur, prolific artist, respected scientist—whoever you dream to be, get ready to design your future at the Sage College of Albany. Why Sage? Some say it’s our student-centered faculty and staff. Others point to our strong multidisciplinary core curriculum—one that gives students the essential competencies they need to succeed in the 21st century. Still others insist that it’s our hands-on, learn-by-doing approach—and that this commitment lies at the heart of our students’ success. Above all, showing our students how they can “Be MORE” drives all that we do.

“As a two-season athlete pursuing a 3+2 program in Occupational Therapy, Sage has helped push me to see how much I am truly capable of accomplishing both physically and academically. Attending Sage has inspired me to never give up my dreams, to strive to succeed, and to try new things.”

After the internship, they offered me a parttime job while I finished my degree, and then a full-time job at graduation!”

“Sage continues to inspire me both academically and socially. I am encouraged to push myself, try new things, and

step out of my comfort zone with the guidance of my professors and teachers. They are incredible individuals who know my name and truly care about my well-being in and out of school which makes my experience at Sage warm and welcoming.” KIMBERLY CRAFT SCA ’17 B.S. in Physical Education

BE MORE YOU.

ACHIEVE MORE + BE INSPIRED From the moment you step on campus to the moment you walk across the stage in cap and gown, you’ll be surrounded by people who care. Professors really do give MORE of themselves here. Staff too. In fact, the entire campus—from its green space crisscrossed by walkways to its charming brick cottage-style buildings to its modern, top-notch facilities—is designed to give you the right space to become MORE YOU.

MORE student-centered.

“Students are at the heart of my work and have been for the past 34 years. For me, teaching means creating a course experience that provides students an opportunity to express their interest in the material in such a way that the benefits are shared with other students, the professor and, in many cases, the community.” -EILEEN BROWNELL, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MANAGEMENT

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

MORE collaborative.

“I love the small size of our studio classes and their great collaborative energy. I regularly share what I’m working on with my students, and in turn I get ideas that I incorporate into my books. It’s a very inspirational atmosphere.” -MATTHEW MCELLIGOTT, PROFESSOR OF GRAPHIC DESIGN

personalized. Sage faculty advisors are full-time professors in your department. Yours will work closely with you in planning your course schedule, navigating online registration, and finding opportunities such as internships that strengthen your academic and career prospects.

The Academic Support Center, located on the top floor of the library, is also “tops” in the hearts of students. It’s where you’ll find academic coaches who help guide you and ensure your academic success. You’ll also find private tutors, who just love to see you excel at their (and now your) favorite subject, and a host of other services to support you from start to successful finish.

BE MORE SUCCESSFUL Sage alumni have found success in many fields, across the country and internationally. They love their careers and love to share, opening to you a whole network of possible connections to successful professionals who want to help you join their ranks.

Agnes Recato SCA ’13

Zach Sullivan SCA ’14

Carmen Duncan SCA ’08

Agnes may have graduated three years ago, but she is still learning – only now her classroom is the Big Apple, working for a world-class architectural firm helping to design “curtain walls” for landmark buildings such as the Freedom Tower. Curtain walls are what architects call non-load-bearing walls, and they are constantly testing new materials and designs. This Interior Design grad’s current project is a 14-story building for Columbia University with all the cutting-edge bells and whistles.

Perhaps it’s no surprise that the most decorated golfer in Sage’s history is now working at the New York State Golf Association, but Zach sees much more than golf in the game. “You can learn so many valuable life lessons while playing this game,” said Zach, citing etiquette, integrity and commitment. In his new role, Zach works on member recruitment and helps run the association’s 11 amateur championships and several series events statewide.

Executive coaching is common among CEOs, which got Carmen Duncan wondering during a class project as a psychology major at Sage: Why not coaching for young adults? Isn’t that a critical time to receive support in setting personal and professional goals? Thus, Mission Accomplished Transition Services was born. Today, Carmen’s nonprofit serves more than 400 participants, ages 13 to 24, with coaching, job training and professional development.

“Sage instilled in me a curiosity for more knowledge. It supplied me with a compass and as I have traveled the world, it has been a faithful and good friend, that Sage compass.”

THOMAS MAGGS, JCA ’67 President of Maggs & Zack Schenectady, NY

99% of Sage graduates surveyed are employed within six months of graduation or continuing their education.

KNOW MORE ABOUT THE WORLD Sage College of Albany subscribes to the principle that to know more, you must do more. You learn by practicing the knowledge you gain. During your Sage experience, your learning happens everywhere: on your peer team tasked with a problem to solve, at the library where you investigate issues, in your neighborhood where you make connections, on the studio drawing board where you create solutions, in the classroom where you collaborate and refine ideas, and at the community meeting where you present them. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

MORE connections.

In a world that is increasingly complex and interconnected, Sage’s general education curriculum fits the bill. Literacies of Connection helps you grasp not only diverse fields of knowledge but how these fields are connected. You’ll work on teams and independently on topics ranging from ethics and finances to technology and visual graphics. You’ll collaborate, innovate and tackle the very challenges facing you and your peers as citizens and professionals in a rapidly changing world.

MORE WAYS TO GET AHEAD MORE hands-on experience.

At Sage College of Albany, internships aren’t just recommended, they are required (you’ll thank us later). Faculty and staff are adept at connecting students to valuable placements that give you the experience you want and need. And students also gain plenty of hands-on experience in the science labs, art studios and clinical settings right on Sage’s two campuses.

MORE pathways to higher degrees.

Sage offers dual and accelerated programs with our graduate schools – the Esteves School of Education, School of Health Sciences, and School of Management. Pair your undergraduate degree with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in just 5 years, or combine a degree in Accounting with the MBA option that prepares students for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. In addition, SCA shares 31 acres in the University Heights neighborhood with Albany Law School, Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, and Albany Medical College. Partnerships with these prestigious institutions provide opportunities for students interested in Pre-Med, Pre-Physician Assistant, and Pre-Law programs.

MORE research opportunities.

Know MORE by taking a deep dive into your field of interest. Sage strongly encourages student research even at the undergraduate level. The Kathleen A. Donnelly Center for Undergraduate Research, based on the Troy campus, sponsors Undergraduate Research Day every year at which student projects are presented and highlighted. In addition, each year Sage students are selected to travel to present their research at the prestigious National Collegiate Undergraduate Research (NCUR) Conference.

SAGE ENGAGED

MORE kinds of “smart.”

Sage has a long tradition of balancing scholarship and service to our community. The Sage Engaged Community Service Projects start off each academic year with a day of helping in our communities. The Scholars Program at Sage is open to all freshman seeking scholarly and community-oriented activities. And National Honor Societies at Sage open avenues for like-minded peers to participate in faculty-led research and service projects and gain pre-professional development.

“Smart” has more than 40 synonyms.

95% of faculty hold terminal degrees.

“My favorite teaching moments are when I witness my students making connections between what they are learning in class and what they are seeing and experiencing in “the real world.” I teach a course that focuses on women in the criminal justice system, which is my area of research. I recently took my class on a field trip to one of our local correctional facilities, and this experience was transformative for my students. Many of them left the facility with much more passion for the course content and a desire to promote system’s change. This is what teaching is all about.” MARISA BEEBLE, PH.D.

A professor of psychology who has graduated with several degrees from The Sage Colleges, Professor Beeble regularly publishes, presents and conducts research on the topic of incarcerated women and domestic violence. She and Law & Society Professor Janel Leone, Ph.D. often provide Sage students with undergraduate research opportunities in this subject area.

//

MORE TO GAIN FROM YOUR PROFESSORS Sage College of Albany professors are distinguished researchers, published authors, Fulbright scholars, business and government professionals, and community leaders. MORE significantly, they love to teach, help students explore, and share their curiosity with others. They are the heart of our small college community.

“When I think about what I enjoy about teaching, it is when a student e-mails me an article (or a cartoon) and states, ‘Remember what we discussed in class yesterday? I thought you might find this interesting (or funny).’ Not only does this demonstrate that the class discussion “connected” with the student, but it demonstrates just how at ease Sage students feel in their interactions with faculty.”

“One of the best parts of teaching is seeing the changes in students over time. As they progress through their coursework, they are no longer daunted by challenges, but rise to them. They no longer expect to simply be told information, but rather ask questions and apply their knowledge. They move beyond memorizing facts to making connections between those facts and what they encounter in the real world.”

STACIE KUTZ, PH.D. ROBERTA (BOBBI) GABRENYA, J.D.

Professor Gabrenya teaches a variety of classes in law and psychology, infusing her coursework with experiential and service learning opportunities, such as in child advocacy. She is also chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies.

Associate Professor Kutz is the Biology program director at SCA and an avid scientific researcher in the areas of wound repair mechanisms and cancer research at Albany Medical Center.

DO MORE THAN YOU THOUGHT POSSIBLE One of the most vibrant aspects of life at Sage College of Albany, in fact, is all there is to do! Sage students participate in clubs, sports, art exhibitions, and community service projects. With more than 60 clubs and organizations between the two campuses, there’s something for everyone. Become a class officer, go rafting with the Outdoor Adventure Club, organize campus events as a member of ACE, submit your best works of art, fiction or poetry to the Vernacular, or deepen your involvement in your major through a subject-area group such as Biology or Math Club.

“Sage’s small size has allowed me to do more than ever before. In just a year, I have served as a Student Ambassador in the Office of Admission and secured a Resident Assistant position. Both roles equip me with organizational and interpersonal communication skills that are transferable to the workplace.” TOMMIE PEARSON SCA ’18 B.S. in Public Affairs & Public Policy

“Sage has many clubs I have been lucky to be involved in, helping me meet new people and pursue my interests. There are athletic teams such as women’s soccer and co-ed club sports like flag football that are a blast, as well as academic societies, such as The Dean’s Scholars program, plus a multitude of social organizations.” JENNIFER LITTLE SCA ’17 3+3 B.S. DO MORE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM Internships are an integral part of your education at Sage, and the placement options are terrific, in part because the college is located in New York State’s capital city—where positions in government, higher education, and NGOs are abundant. Albany is also at the heart of Tech Valley, presenting exciting opportunities for students seeking experience in high-tech fields. For those interested in medical or health-related academic programs, know that Albany Med, a Level-1 Trauma Center serving more than 3 million residents in 25 counties, is just down the street, as well as St. Peter’s Hospital, a highly ranked general medical and surgical hospital.

Coming up with creative ways to attract new supporters was just one contribution Barrington made as an intern at the Mohawk-Hudson Land Conservancy. He also conducted competitive market research, planned events and created databases to aid in the everyday operations of this nonprofit dedicated to protecting valuable natural areas in the region.

Shalley Drine SCA ’13 |

Shalley thought she wanted an internship in marketing. “However, I stepped out of my comfort zone and explored the export business.” The result was global; Shalley gained an appreciation for the level of cultural fluency needed for business success today—especially in an export services firm. She grew both personally and professionally, networking with a range of experts who gave her key insights into how business is conducted on a global scale.

Allexis got to see all aspects of how a small, busy law practice operates at her internship with a sole proprietor in law. Whether it was listening to a client’s story or conducting research to support the case, she found the work engaging, and is now considering taking the LSAT exam and studying law. “I would recommend that any business or law student work for an attorney.”

MORE cultural events.

SCA is home to a highly respected art gallery right on campus. Voted the “Best Gallery” in the Capital Region by Metroland, the Opalka Gallery focuses on modern and contemporary art and design from nationally recognized artists. The gallery features multi-disciplinary projects and hosts lectures, films, performances, and other events in conjunction with its exhibitions. A second exhibition space on campus, the Little Gallery, features work by student, faculty and alumni artists. The College welcomes major speakers such as New York Times bestselling authors each fall, joins together for an International Food Festival each winter, and holds many other cultural events throughout the year.
