A word from our President Good evening all, Welcome to Richmond Park for our midweek encounter with Derry City. I would like to extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters from Derry and hope they have a safe return journey. Of course, our last encounter with Derry City was in the environs of the Aviva Stadium last November in the FAI Cup Final, an afternoon which of course was written into the history books of this football club. As was the case that day, the team know they are in for a difficult task this evening against Peter Hutton’s team, which always carries a goalscoring threat. Last Friday’s result in Dundalk was of course very disappointing, but it is early in the season and there is still so much to play for and I know we have a squad
and management team that we will be doing their level best to get some points on the board this evening. All that remains is for me to thank you for coming along to Richmond Park this evening and I hope you enjoy the game.

A word from our manager Liam Buckley
WELCOME We are pleased to welcome the management, players and supporters of Derry City Football Club to Richmond Park tonight. I’d like to welcome Peter Hutton, his players, the directors, supporters and everybody connected with Derry City to Richmond Park for this evening’s Premier Division match. Games between Pat’s and Derry are always hard-fought and there’s normally very little, if anything, between the teams at the end of the ninety minutes. Peter has done an excellent job since taking charge of the Candystripes last season and the locally-based nature of the squad always guarantees plenty of pride in the jersey. Due to printing deadlines, these notes were written just a few short hours before our trip to Dundalk last Friday, so I am not in a position to talk about the key points of that match. The previous Friday, though, we entertained Bray Wanderers here at Richmond Park and I was very pleased with how the match panned out. Despite taking an early two-goal lead, the players’ intensity levels didn’t diminish and it was very satisfying to witness Christy Fagan add the third goal. We perhaps could have scored another but 3-0 was a great result. Cyril Guedje is one of our new arrivals and I was delighted with the big Inchicore welcome he received after coming on as a second-half substitute. Cyril acquitted himself particularly
FÁILTE Tá áthas orainn fáilte a chur roimh mbainistíocht, fuireann agus lucht tacaíochta Chlub Peile Cathair Doire go Phairc Richmond anocht. well during those minutes on the field and that was pleasing to see. Aaron Greene and Ciaran Kilduff were also introduced as second-half replacements and they acquitted themselves well. It’s nice to be able to call upon such undoubted talent from the bench. Ireland take on Poland this Sunday in a crucial Euro 2016 qualifier and, while it’s going to be a tough task, I believe Martin O’Neill’s men can pull off a favourable result. The narrow defeat away to Scotland last November was disappointing, but Ireland showed in the 1-1 draw with Germany that impressive results can be achieved. Back to business at hand. Tonight’s match is our third competitive match in a relatively short space of time and your support at every match is much appreciated. Keep it loud and enthusiastic tonight, and hopefully the result will follow. Yours in sport,
Liam Buckley

‘Tis the season to be jolly! The winter months are a cold dark and dangerous place for any League of Ireland fan. The lure of the floodlights, beers, scarves and hats can get so much that you may even end up travelling the breadth of the country for a preseason friendly. There isn’t a league that can produce quite the rollercoaster of emotion, bizarre goings on and range of characters we have in our league, which is so often referred to as the #GreatestLeagueInTheWorld on Twitter and other social media outlets by its admirers. Over the past week or so I’ve seen articles which have criticised our league, criticised the products of our league that have gone across the water and a criticism of our club from a past player. So my agenda in this piece is to challenge Pat’s fans to take three positives from each game and carry into the next. I’ll start us off with some positives for the season ahead. For the first time in probably ten or more years if my memory serves me correctly, there is a great sense of continuity within the club, especially the playing staff. This is really something that cannot be underestimated in the league. From the first league game of the current Liam Buckley era in 2012, coincidentally also against Bray, there are no fewer than eight senior players still involved in the squad. Ian Bermingham is entering his sixth successive season as a Saint and Brendan Clarke, Ger O’Brien, Kenny Browne, Greg Bolger, Chris Forrester, Chris Fagan and Greg Bolger are all entering their fourth season in a row with St Pat’s. James Chambers is entering his third in
Peter McGlynn, Bray Wanderers, in action against Conan Byrne, St Patrick’s Athletic.
four years. From the opening game of 2013 enter a certain Killian Brennan. This is a strong core of players who know Bucko’s ways of playing, and are supported by other key long serving staff members like Dave Campbell and Christy O’Neill. In terms of our first home game of this season, it was great to begin with three home goals and a clean sheet against Bray last Friday. Although the performance wasn’t quite at the levels of our blistering start in that game, exemplary home form will be needed if we are to challenge again this year. Much to the enjoyment of everyone in the ground last Friday, and those who couldn’t make it, Christy has notched his first of the season. Last season’s PFAI player of the Year, Golden Boot, Team of the Year member, Cup winner and Club Player of the Year will again need to be as sharp as he was last season and no better way to get moving then getting on the board as early as possible. Finally if you’re all not excited enough, see you all in Europe ;)

Sean Hoare Saints defender looking forward to another stellar season Sean Hoare, St. Patrick’s Athletic. Perhaps the best Sean Hoare fact amidst the plethora of #SeanHoareFacts on Twitter is the fact that the young Saints defender became the first player to lift a Collingwood Cup (with NUI Maynooth) and FAI Cup (with St Pat’s) in the same year. It bears testament to a fine year for the Castleknock man, capped off by international recognition in the form of a call-up to the Ireland Under-21 squad, where he also got to captain a home-based Under-21 Ireland side and interest from Premier League outfit Hull City. But Sean’s only focus now remains on cementing his position in the heart of the St Patrick’s Athletic defence and seeking to help to Saints to more silverware this season. Sean points to the hard graft done in pre-season by all the players as the reason why Liam Buckley’s side is in such fine condition for 2015. “I was very happy with how pre-season went and the addition of the new coaching staff has a big effect on this. Alan Reynolds joined us halfway through last season so obviously it was great to get a pre-season in with him, and Paul Stewart, our strength and conditioning coach, has had a big effect as well,” he says. “Obviously Darius Kerins, with his vast experience, has been great as well. So all of them combined have made sure we’re in great shape now for the season ahead.” Sean was pleased with his first outing of the
12
League season – a comprehensive 3-0 win over Bray Wanderers, but miffed that he had to miss the opener against Shamrock Rovers due to a carry-over suspension from last season. “It was hard, in many ways, preparing for the season ahead knowing that you’re suspended for the first game. I don’t know what that rule is about to be honest, but I was just delighted to get back into the action against Bray,” he said. “We started really well and took a two-goal lead after only five minutes, so we were in control from then on.” As this interview took place before Friday’s game in Dundalk, Sean referred to the fact that Pats only played in Oriel Park three weeks ago as a reason to be hopeful going to the home of the reigning champions. But in general, he believes that the race for the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division title will be wide open this year. “It was good to play them recently as we’d be a little bit better prepared for the surface in Oriel Park, where you need to concentrate on your touch a little bit more as the pitch can be a bit bobbly, but it’s the same for every team going up there so we won’t be making any excuses,” he said. “I think there are probably five or six teams that can challenge for the title this year. Dundalk will be strong again. Cork had a great season last year and they have strengthened, as well as ourselves and Shamrock Rovers. Derry too will be up there.” Sean insists games against tonight’s opponents Derry

Whatever Derry team you come up against it’s always going to be tough, We really had to work hard for that Cup win last November. Sean Hoare, St. Patrick’s Athletic, in action against David McMillan, Dundalk. Presidents Cup Final City are never easy and points to last year’s FAI Cup final as a case in point. “Whatever Derry team you come up against it’s always going to be tough. We really had to work hard for that Cup win last November and that shows in the fact that I picked up a yellow card only five minutes into the game,” he says. When asked what kind of effect a booking so early in a game of such high importance had on him, Sean insists it eventually had a calming influence. “I was worried for about five minutes after it, but it kind of settled me down a bit. I had a lot of the ball in that game so there wasn’t as many tackles to make, but it still a tough game and we’ll be expecting another difficult game tonight,” he said. Sean’s off-season included a stint with Steve Bruce’s Hull City and it’s a place that the 20-year-old would like to re-visit some day. “It was a real eye-opener to see what things were like. It’s obviously on a bigger scale and their facilities are top class. As a footballer, you’d be mad not to want that,” he said.
“It didn’t work out, but I wasn’t too disappointed. I’m just happy now to focus on doing well again with St Pat’s.” And there’s plenty for the defender to look forward to this season, not least another adventure into Europe. “European football is something I’m really looking forward to this season. The first leg against Legia Warsaw came a bit too early for me last year as I was injured, and I got on towards the end of the second leg, but it was great to be involved in,” he said. “Although we played our ‘home’ game in Tallaght Stadium, it felt like Richmond Park as there was such a great atmosphere there. But we’re all looking forward to getting a big crowd into Richmond and they’re special nights for the club,” he added.

St Patrick’s Athletic Launch the
2015 Dublin Schools Penalty King Competition Schools competition to find the best penalty taker in Dublin School champions to battle it out in Richmond Park, home of the Saints, to win great prizes for them and their school Thousands of fans will watch penalty shootout at St Pat’s home league games in April and May St Patrick’s Athletic recently announced the inaugural Penalty King competition for Dublin Schools. The competition is designed to find the best penalty taker among the secondary schools soccer players in Dublin. The first competition will involve six invited schools (names to be announced very soon), and is open to all secondary level pupils to enter. Each school will first run its own internal Penalty King competition. Then the six school champions will advance to the semifinals which will take place at the half-time interval of an important league game at Richmond Park in front of thousands of fans. “Who can keep their nerve?” comments midfielder Killian Brennan, the official penalty taker for St Patrick’s Athletic. “It’s a free kick from 12 yards out, how hard can it be?” The winners of the semifinals will advance to the
Killian Brennan final which will be hosted at another league game in Richmond Park. The winner will receive two season tickets for St Pat’s plus the opportunity for their school team to play any of their own league or cup games at the home of the Saints. “We’ve had a great reaction to the competition from the initial contact made with local schools – places are limited with the amount of home fixtures that we have, so we would encourage schools to get in contact with us as soon as possible,” commented Ger Sweeney, Project Officer for the schools’ competitions. “We at St Patrick’s Athletic want to give as many local supporters and football fans the opportunity to get that match day feeling, take in the atmosphere the player’s experience on a Friday night and face that pressurised situation of taking a penalty – we want to find a real Penalty King champion!” To get involved in schools activities please contact Geraldine Sweeney at admin@ stpatsfc.com or press@stpatsfc.com or visit www.stpatsfc.com/penalty_king.php

Oh My Word It only feels like yesterday that Ger O’Brien was climbing the steps at the Aviva Stadium to become acquainted with the FAI Cup. It wasn’t yesterday, though, and tonight’s meeting of the Saints and Derry City marks the first clash between the sides since the blue riband decider in early November. I don’t make these mentions in an attempt to wind Derry City fans up. Many Candystripes fans I spoke to after the match were positively happy for Pat’s, and that speaks volumes for sports fans from the Oak Leaf County. Pat’s and Derry have, as we all know, taken part in their share of classics - most notably in the FAI Cup. When both teams took the field at the old Lansdowne Road in Devember 2006, for the last football match at the famous venue, nobody could have ever predicted what would lie ahead. To take the lead three times and lose 4-3 was heartbreaking. But, as we found out at the tail end of last year, it was all part of the footballing gods’ plan. The 2012 decider wreaked havoc upon the heart strings again. Sean O’Connor repeated his feat of four years earlier when he fired the Saints ahead. But, once again, our rivals in red and white stripes got the job done and the cup was heading Foyleside once again. There’s no silverware at stake tonight, but another three-point haul at this early stage of the campaign would be very welcome.
Liam Buckley
Last Friday’s trip to Oriel Park was made after the print deadline of this publication, so the most recent match at the time of writing was the 3-0 home victory against Bray Wanderers. When all was said and done and everybody departed for home, one of the big bonuses from the night was Cyril Guedje’s brief substitute appearance. His ability to keep the ball and then release it at the perfect moment left the Richmond Park faithful wanting more. Maybe we’ll get it tonight, along with an appearance from Morgan Langley. There’s an international look to the squad now, and the standard of football is equally as cultured. As has been the case right through Liam Buckley’s tenure, these are exciting times. Come on you Supersaints!

Season 2015 - Vol.27 – No. 02 – St Patrick’s Athletic Vs Derry City FC
Pats from the past Irish Independent: Monday, January 13, 1975 Premier Division
ST. PATRICK’S ATH 0 WATERFORD 1 By Kieran Rooney WITH TWO TEAMS well out of the running in the League race playing on a pitch which resembled a bog, no one could have been over-optimistic before the start of the game between St Patrick’s Athletic and Waterford at Richmond Park yesterday. However, the fans who braved the wet conditions were rewarded with one of the most entertaining matches I have seen all season. It was a game which could have ended 4-4, but instead the only goal was scored by St Pat’s defender Paul Smith. That winning goal came just a minute before the interval when a harmless-looking shot from Davy Power — deputising for the injured Frank O’Neill — was deflected past Lally in the St Patrick’s goal by the unfortunate Smith. Up to this Pats had done most of the attacking. In the very first minute a poor back pass by Jimmy House nearly allowed Bobby Baker put the home side in front. Baker, in fact rounded Thomas but shot over. With ]ack Burkett showing up particularly well in the middle of the field, Pats continued to have the better of the exchange. Still, when Waterford broke they were always likely to score, and this was typified by a move which ended with Mick Leech heading against the crossbar from a Johnny Matthews’ cross seven minutes before half-time. As the conditions worsened the
entertainment surprisingly grew. Smith’s o.g. gave Waterford a half-time lead, and seven minutes after the break man-of-the-match Matthews beat two men brilliantly on the left to provide Leech with a simple chance from which he should have wrapped up the game for the Blues. Incredibly, Leech again hit the woodwork, and from that moment on it was all St. Patricks. In the 62nd minute “Mo’ Shields sent new signing Matt Whelan away on the right to send over a cross which was scrambled from Burkett’s foot by Dunphy. An indication of the pressure Pats were applying is that they forced seven corners in the halt hour following the interval, while Waterford could not manage any. Still, no one seemed able to get the ball past Waterford ‘keeper Peter Thomas, and when they finally did 16 minutes from time, Al Finucane was placed on the goalline to boot clear. Four minutes earlier Johnny Matthews had made his one real error of the game. The little Waterford winger dispossessed Smith at halfway, but with only Lally to beat, took too much time and the chance was lost. Lucky as they were to gain both of the points, there were definite signs yesterday of the old Waterford. Jimmy McGeough at midfield showed much of the composure we used to see from him before leaving for Lincoln, while Johnny Matthews and Mick Leech looked extremely sharp up from. Matthews gave Sean Byrne a nightmare of an afternoon, beating him at will and causing havoc in the Pat’s defence almost every time he touched the ball. St. Patricks will play a lot worse than this and win. Burkett, who, like Leech, was returning after injury, was outstanding at midfield, and despite the result, the playermanager can take satisfaction from this performance, especially with the FAI Cup approaching. St Patrick’s Athletic: Lally; Byrne, Smith, Doyle, Myles; Burkett, Flanagan, Whelan; Shields, Baker, Devlin. Waterford: Thomas; Bryan, Finucane, Buck, Dunphy; McGeough, House, Power; Doran. M Leech, Matthews. Referee: D V Byrne (Dublin).

Season 2015 - Vol.27 – No. 02 – St Patrick’s Athletic Vs Derry City FC
Pensive Points Welcome to Richmond Park for this evenings SSE Airtricity Premier League game between “The Saints” and Derry City. So welcome to Derry City, their Chairman and management Committee, their supporters and last but not least – Peter Hutton their Manager. He has been around a few clubs in his time but the one most people would associate him with is Derry City and I wish him all then best for the future. He has been an excellent player, Captain and Manager for this club for so many years. They reached the F.A.I. Cup Final for the umpteenth time again last season. Their opponents were of course our own Club, St Patrick’s Athletic.. This was the third time in the F.A.I. Cup that the Saints and Derry have met in the final and it was also our third F.A.I. Cup win after a long long wait. We were hanging onto a 1-0 lead courtesy of a Christy Fagen goal.
Back to the League Championship and back down to earth with a bang. We havn’t had the best of starts, but of the five teams mentioned as potential winners, ourselves, Dundalk, Cork City, Sligo Rovers and Shamrock Rovers – the happiest two clubs going into another series of matches are Dundalk who look very strong and Cork City who certainly won’t be heartbroken with the draw in Tallaght last Friday. See you soon,
Jimmy Edwards
Then as the clock moved towards the 90th minute, Christy got away from his marker again and slipped in what we now know would be the winner. It’s a very long time since 1961 and this was a great to the players and of course the fans to get our hands on the coveted trophy once more. The parties went on ion Inchicore and elsewhere for quite some time, and why not.
