Season 2015 - Vol.27 – No. 15 – St Patrick’s Athletic Vs Derry City

A word from our President Good evening and welcome to Richmond Park, Inchicore, for this evening’s SSE Airtricity League Premier Division game against Derry City. I would like to especially welcome the management, players, officials and supporters of Derry City. Games between St Pat’s and Derry City have been nothing but competitive affairs since the two clubs met for the first time back in the 1987/88 League of Ireland season. We have shared FAI Cup finals on three occasions since then, with our visitors winning two and our never to be forgotten hoodoo-ending win over the Candystripes in last year’s FAI Cup final at the Aviva Stadium. There has also been recent player transactions between the clubs with Conor McCormack ending a fruitful association with us by joining Derry City and Shane McEleney coming the opposite way to Richmond Park. I’m sure both signings will be beneficial to Peter Hutton and Liam Buckley respectively.

With plenty still to play for this season, I expect an exciting run-in to the end of the season and both sides will be going all out for the valuable three points tonight. It should make for a cracking contest. Enjoy the match

A word from our manager Liam Buckley

WELCOME We are pleased to welcome the management, players and supporters of Derry City Football Club to Richmond Park tonight. I’d like to welcome Peter Hutton, his players, the directors, supporters and everyone connected with Derry City to Richmond Park for this evening’s Premier Division encounter. Matches between ourselves and The Candystripes are always hard-fought and we are expecting a stern challenge this evening. Peter enjoyed an outstanding playing career with Derry City, winning plenty of honours along the way, and he is now building a strong squad that will give any team a tough game. Last week was disappointing in terms of the defeats to Dundalk and Cork City. We have been working hard this week and are determined to bounce back in the best possible way. Prior to the match against Dundalk, we had accumulated a club-record nine consecutive league wins on the trot. So the quality of our panel was very much illustrated by that sequence of results and I have every hope that we can get back to winning ways this evening. The travelling support in Oriel Park and Turner’s Cross was very pleasing and I want to thank everyone that made the journeys and paid into the matches. I’m very well aware that it’s

FÁILTE Tá áthas orainn fáilte a chur roimh mbainistíocht, fuireann agus lucht tacaíochta Chlub Peile Cathair Doire go Phairc Richmond anocht. not cheap supporting a football club the length and breadth of the county, but it is very much appreciated. There is still an awful lot to play for between now and the rest of the season and I am determined that we finish as high as possible, with the objective of securing a place in next season’s Europa League. It is hard to see past Dundalk for the league title, but second and third place are very much up for grabs and we won’t be losing sight of that. There is also the significant matter of an EA Sports Cup final in a few weeks. So the message is clear: we have an awful lot to play for, starting from tonight. I hope you can help us along the way by keeping it loud and proud in the stands and terraces. Yours in sport

Under Age Team Off To A Flyer In what has been a tough past week for Liam and the squad, there has been much brighter news on other fronts for the club. The newly formed Under-17 league structure is a welcome development in most circles, and seen as an ideal platform for young players to play at a higher standard and receive arguably a better standard of training and coaching. The launch was given a fairly good media coverage, with FAI officer Ruud Dokter joined by Senior Assistant Manager Roy Keane in unveiling the SSE Airtricity sponsored competition. Our own under-17 team have started the season in blistering form, winning three out of three and notching eleven goals in the process, conceding only one. The management team of Jamie Moore and Darragh O’Reilly will no doubt be pleased with the start their players have made. Speaking after the launch, Moore summed up the role himself and O’Reilly will provide, “We are providing a very professional environment for the players in terms of coaching, facilities, gym, strength and condition, and nutrition but the main work is on the pitch. The lads are training well and the real positive for me is that the things we have been trying to help them with tactically and how we want to play have been transferred onto the pitch and improved every game.” Notable performances from Captain Conor Fowler have helped, while Evan Casey and Neil

Byrne have been on the score line on more than one occasion. The development of the league now maps a deliberate path for a young player to progress through the ranks at a club playing at a consistent standard throughout. The middle ground between 17s and Senior football is of course the Under 19s, and first team members like Sam Verdon, Jack Bayly, Darragh Markey, Paul Rooney and last but not least Jamie McGrath have made the most of that path. Next up for the under 17 team is a trip to the City Calling Stadium in Longford, whilst the Under 19s at the time of writing were due to play Bohemians on Tuesday 25th August. All support at these games is welcome as the club look to be successful at all age groups.

Derry City

Derry City are bogged down in a relegation scrap once again yet somehow doing well in the FAI Cup. Last season’s FAI Cup runner’s up sit only 6 points off the last automatic relegation spot currently occupied by Limerick. The second lowest scorers in the league, with only 21 goals for, they have struggled to carve out goal scoring opportunities despite playing some nice football at times. Peter Hutton, the Candystripes’ manager, has his work cut out with a stringent budget and a very youthful squad (average age of 22.9 years old). Derry play 3 teams from the top 4 in the next four games as they look to secure their top flight status. Following that they play 3 teams from the relegation battle in their last four games, with an FAI Cup quarter-final at home to Cork City in between. Mark Timlin provides the main goal threat on

8 goals whilst Barry McNamee looks to pull the strings going from midfield. Ex-Super Saint Mark Quigley is also a member of the squad but has mainly been coming off the bench. Conor McCormack has also transferred north this summer. The Brandywell club will be disappointed that they haven’t been able to progress from last season. They are in an almost identical situation. On that basis they will be again looking to the cup for such much needed cheer. They have eased through to the quarter-final stage with two 3-0 victories against Edenderry Town and Drogheda United. Whilst they still have to beat Cork in that quarter-final, you could forgive Derry fans for thinking a favourable semi-final draw might see them reach the final again this year, and, thus an opportunity to avenge last season’s disappointment. Even though the Candystripes have struggled this year they should be commended for giving a youthful side (only 3 players in the squad are over 25) a chance. Whether through necessity or choice, it is always a brave decision to have so many players in a squad under the age of 25, and start so many of them on a weekly basis. Derry are similar to our last opponents Bray in many ways. They again are struggling provincial team who are vital to a vibrant League of Ireland Premier Division. I wish them the best of luck with their admirable player development and cup run.

Candystripes are crucial

There were recent rumblings in the Northern Irish media about the possibility of Derry City quitting the League of Ireland and entering the Irish League. It came at a time when Derry were on a losing streak and faring badly in the Premier Division. The response from the Brandywell, however, was clear. The club is happy to stay in the League of Ireland and have no intention of jumping ship. It was good news for our league. Since their arrival in the League of Ireland, Derry City have enhanced the profile of an entity that has, more often than not, failed to grab the attention of the so-called Great Irish Sporting Public. Actually, their arrival into the League, firstly in the First Division back in the 1986-87 season, was one of those phenomena that did grab the attention of the wider sporting public, namely due to the numbers that travelled to Derry’s away games and the professional set-up on Foyleside. Promotion from the First Division was a given, and the Candystripes once again brought these huge crowds to Premier Division grounds the length and breadth of the country.

12

No doubt the respective chairmen of these clubs, include St Pats, would have been rubbing their hands at the prospect of a big away crowd arriving at their ground. I remember the first time this happened in Richmond Park – the result, however, didn’t go to plan for the Derry hoardes as a Paddy Dillon-led Saints handsomely beat the visitors 3-0. The one thing that stuck out was the atmosphere. It was electric, primarily due to the boisterous Candystriped collective in The Shed. Pats had a bit of a hoodoo over Derry in the early days, and perhaps the turning point of the club’s successful 1989-90 Premier Division campaign was the 1-0 win up in the Brandywell, courtesy of a Paul Osam header. My first trip to the Brandywell came in the 198889 season with my Dad, and like most Pats fans on the trip we looked forward to seeing the stadium and the special atmosphere. My Dad called it a ‘Mecca’ and it was in a way, because there was nothing like it in the League at the time. After a stop-off in Castleblayney, our coach arrived in Derry a couple of hours before the Sunday afternoon kick-off. We decided to take a stroll into the city centre which was eerily empty. With nothing doing, we decided to make our way back through the city walls.

Season 2015 - Vol.27 – No. 15 – St Patrick’s Athletic Vs Derry City

To have such a big club as part of its league is always a huge asset.

Ryan McBride, Derry City, in action against Ciaran Kilduff But just before that we met a British soldier, hunkered down at one of the points on the diamond. Noticing my scarf, he asked me “Oo’s Derry playin’ today mate?” He was a football fan, from London, and probably would love to have been in our shoes going to a game. We had a chat for a few minutes before he had to change his position on the diamond. He was a Norwich City fan. It gave the whole trip a different slant. It wasn’t a war zone, and yet, there, in the city centre, was a soldier in full fatigues with a machine gun in hand, talking to us. Thankfully, times have changed since and the North is a more hospitable place, which brings into focus Derry City’s possible involvement in the North’s League. The now defunct Setanta Sports Cup would have gone some way to healing old wounds and allowing

games between the likes of Linfield, Glentoran and Derry City to go ahead, it remains that Derry City simply have no appetite to play under the auspices of the Irish Football Association. The FAI should be delighted with this. To have such a big club as part of its league is always a huge asset. Hopefully it will stay this way. Unless the unthinkable happens and we’re all part of an AllIreland League. We can only wait and wonder. Enjoy the game.

Season 2015 - Vol.27 – No. 15 – St Patrick’s Athletic Vs Derry City

Oh My Word LAST week was a tough one. In the space of four days, our league and cup hopes evaporated. All is not lost though. Far from it. Tonight, against Derry City, the process of securing European football for next season - by finishing second or third - begins in earnest. A swift glance at the current league standings confirms that this is a very achievable goal. On September 19, we will journey into the west in search of silverware. Any Saints fan who thinks the season is all but over mustn’t have been around during the lean years, of which there have been plenty. Since entering the League of Ireland 64 years ago, this club has won a major trophy in 14 of those years. For the purposes of clarity, a major trophy is the league title (nine), FAI Cup (three) and League Cup (two). So that means 50 trophyless campaigns have been endured by the Richmond Park faithful. With the aforementioned facts in mind, it is time for all Supersaints to approach the remaining ten weeks of the season with renewed vigour as the team goes in search of a trophy and a lofty league placing. The support in Dundalk last Monday week was particularly good. I, for one, was delighted to avail of a bus that was booked and organised by the brilliant Aaron Dunne. Aaron has organised supporters’ buses time and again and, no doubt, he has had to tolerate plenty of hassle along the way. Last Thursday he was let down by a bus company ahead of the Cork match the following day but, in reality, when supporters are so important to the team, it is disappointing that the club can’t take more of an active involvement in the booking and promotion of bus services. The away section in Turner’s Cross last Friday was

James Chambers, St Patrick’s Athletic, in action against Andy Boyle, Dundalk.

very sparsely populated and it should not fall on the shoulders of one fan to bolster our support base on away days. The first 45 minutes in Dundalk 11 days ago proved to be something of an exercise in restraint for the travelling Pat’s fans. On an evening when we were well beaten, the last thing we needed was salt rubbed into our wounds from an official source. Following Dundalk’s first goal, the gentleman tasked with providing public announcements gleefully proclaimed the scorer, Brian Gartland as “the man for the big occasion”. That, I could live with. However, his proclamation that “sexy football is back” after the second goal was irritating. Similar comments greeted Dundalk’s third and fourth goals. For a club making great strides on and off the pitch, they need to rethink their announcing situation. Not all fanbases are as polite as ours and it’s only a matter of time before the PA gloat gets on someone’s goat. Come on you Supersaints!

Pensive Points Good evening all, Welcome to Richmond Park for our SSE Airtricity match versus Derry City, about which more anon. The first thing to be done is to congratulate everybody connected with the marvellous run of nine successive wins in the league, surpassing the great eight win run by our League Champions side in the late 1990’s. Manager Liam Buckley, his coaching staff, and of course the players all take a bow. It was a job well done, not only that, it was done by playing open, attacking football which was easy on the eye and a joy to watch. Once again, thank you all and well done. But all good things must come to an end and so it did at Oriel Park. A totally forgettable game (a 4-1 loss) from a Saints perspective was further spoiled by an ugly kick to the face of our 19 year old centre forward as he lay on the ground. The guilty party, a Dundalk midfielder, received a yellow card for the act, but there is no place for this in the game and if a player is not sent off for a kick like that, what will he do next? However, I believe an apology was tendered to the player directly, so let that be the end of it in this case. Later the same week, our reign as cupholders came to an end, as a strong Cork City

side rediscovered their lost form to run out 4-0 winners at Turner’s Cross and knock us out of the cup. It was a strange game, Pats could have been several goals to the good by the interval but that’s what can happen if chances aren’t taken. But let’s be positive. We still have eight league games ahead, plus Leinster Senior Cup games and the EA Sports Cup Finals to look forward to, the latter a day out in Galway. So there’s no way we can fold up our tents just yet. Finally I’d like to welcome Derry City to Richmond Park this evening. Pat’s fans have huge respect for the Foylesiders, and they are recently beginning to play like we know they can. Manager Peter Hutton was a great player and has been a loyal servant to Derry down the years, I wish him every success with the ‘Candystripes’. See you soon,

Jimmy Edwards
