Mock Trial Team Not an Idea, but Reality

By JACKSON WANG Executive Editor The idea of starting a Saint Rose mock trial team has been in the air for a few years now. But no student or professor actually went through with it until this year.

With the idea of actually wanting to be the first to start a mock trial team, Kim Hansen, co-captain of the team, and a professor went to the dean with the idea and turned it into reality.

“We’re a group of students who have an interest in criminal justice,” said Hansen, a junior here at Saint Rose.

Hansen, who had prior experience of being on a mock trial team back in high school, wanted something like that here at The College.

Currently, the team is working on their first trial, which is a civil case. Each week, Hansen and the rest of her team members practice examinations, opening statements, and cross examinations as they prepare for their first mock trial, which is scheduled for the beginning of next semester.

“There has been a lot of pro-

gression with the team,” said Rayanne Geleta, captain of the team.

The mock trial team is being coached by two professors, Alfred Chapleau, who helped start the team, and Anthony Rossi.

“We’re a group of students who have an interest in criminal justice.”

“It’s good prep for law school,” said Hansen. “You’ll gain experience to feel what it is like to be a law school student.”

Hansen also said this team will help her make great connections, especially when they go watch and be part of mock trials, which uses real court judges.

Currently, the team is not part of Student Association so they’re getting money from a fund set up by Loretta Preska, the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

“It’s keeping the team going for now,” said Hansen, who added The College has been a big help and continues to support the team.

The mock trial team is opened to all students on campus. The team meets every Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Back on the morning of November 26th, Zwack was driving recklessly at an excessive speed on Quail Street when he hit Etemowei James Oki. Oki was then taken to Albany Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 5 a.m. due to massive head trauma.

Accompanied by an attorney,

Zwack turned himself authorities two days after the incident.

“This case should serve as a reminder to all those in our community, particularly the young adults of our community, operating a motor vehicle is a privilege, not a right. If you choose to recklessly abuse this privilege, you can expect to face similar consequences as Mr. Zwack,” said Soares.

Oki was laid to rest on December 2nd at Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

Social Work Sponsored Diversity Workshop to Take Place on Campus

On Thursday, November 15 and Tuesday, November 20 the SWK 375 class will be hosting a diversity workshop. The campus conversations, entitled “What Works…What Hurts”, are being held in the Hubbard Interfaith Sanctuary from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Students, faculty & staff are invited to take part in these campus conversations facilitated by students in the Diversity Workshop course.

The purpose of the project is to talk about diversity-related experiences on campus. The discussion will specifically focus on what we as individuals find helpful and what we as individuals find hurtful.

Albany Man Sentenced to Prison For Fatal Hit and Run An Albany man was sentenced 3 1/2 to 10 years in state prison on October 30th for a hit and run that took the life of a 29-year-old Saint Rose student in 2011.

Alfred Zwack, 20, pleaded guilty back in September to manslaughter and leaving the scene of an incident without reporting before Supreme Court Justice Thomas Breslin in Albany County Court.

“It was one of the coldest days of my life,” said Hyman. “I remember lots people waving flags as they passed by and people at the Wall finding someone’s name and breaking down and crying, even veterans. It was very emotional and unforgettable.”

At this year’s event he will also be singing the song “50,000 Names” about The Wall at the Vietnam Memorial. “50,000 Names,” although written by Jamie O’Hara, is a song is about what Hyman experienced at the ceremony on 1982.

This performance of “The Dedication” and “50,000 Names” also aired on television, on Hyman’s show Albany Tempo Spectrum on Channel Albany 18. The program is taped biweekly and often features special guests from different creative fields, who he interviews on the show. Albany Tempo Spectrum airs at 8 p.m. on Saturday, 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Monday.

Hyman was recently in Boston this October to perform in the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival, where he won a silver medal for his vocal solo with dance, and a gold for his freestyle dance performance. The festivals are telecast each Veterans Day on PBS stations around the nation, showcasing veterans’ talents.

An impressive total of seven times Hyman has won first and second prize medals at the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival for singing, dancing, and drama.

“Involvement in the creative arts gives me a positive outlet for my creative expression in music and dance,” he said.

Thanks to the opportunities the veterans festival has given him, “I’ve found new ways to dream,” Hyman said. A spiritual man, he says that he believes that God gave him chance and gift to do this.

A life-long music lover, Hyman described Brooklyn in the 60’s to be “an exciting time to be a young person.” Hyman recalls that when The Motortown Revue, the package concert tours of popular Motown artists such as The Supremes and The Temptations, came to Brooklyn when we was younger, he attended for a ticket price of $2.50. That $2.50 he spent decades ago to see this show helped him in realizing his ultimate dream of being a performer, which he is still pursuing today.

“After that, I knew I didn’t want to be a cowboy or an astronaut,” said Hyman.

Hyman idolizes soulful performers such as James Brown, Percy Sledge, Ben E. King, and Engelbert Humperdinck, whose songs he is known to cover in his own shows. “I’m a soul preservationist,” Hyman stated, noting that soul artists and music are often forgotten about.

For the past four years, each first Sunday of the month, Hyman performs a different themed show at the Veterans Hospital for the Patients Brunch. His favorite solo show to perform is one that he calls “The Motown Story.” This past Sunday, Hyman performed a “Salute to Veterans” including the anthems of each military service branch.

Also an experienced actor, Hyman can be seen in the History Channel’s “The Revolution,” a 13 part mini-series filmed in New York about the American Revolutionary War. Hyman reported that he sometimes shows this movie to his classes without admitting his role.

In local productions, Hyman has performed at notable local venues such as Proctor’s Theatre in Schenectady, The Palace, and the Hilton Center.

Hyman’s acting résumé also includes historical reenactments at the Schuyler Mansion and Cherry Hill Mansion.

has written several plays himself over the years, some of which have been performed at the Albany Civic Theater such as “Freedom Summer.” Hyman has also worked with the Schenectady Light Opera Company, and Sand Lake Theater.

Much of Hyman’s writing sparks from his time spent traveling and his experiences in the military. As Brooklyn college student in the seventies “I decided to join the military to see the world,” said Hyman, and that he did.

Donald Hyman is an American Studies professor at Saint Rose. base as an administrative clerk, where he spent two years embracing the Texan and MexicanAmerican culture.

After his time in Texas, Hyman was then stationed at “the top of the world,” as Hyman called it, otherwise known as Alaska.

Alaska was on his “dream sheet” of locations to be stationed, along with Hawaii and the Philippines.

Hyman worked in Special Services at the Fairbanks Air Force base, where he experienced 24 hours of sunlight, and encountered his first moose. Hyman also studied at the University of Alaska during this time.

At this time, 1976, the TransAlaska Pipeline System was being constructed, which was going through the base where Hyman worked.

Once returning to school in Brooklyn to finish his degree,

Hyman became involved in the Brooklyn College Veterans Organization, where he could talk to fellow veterans who had lived through similar experiences in their military lingo he treasures so much. It was through the veterans center on campus that Hyman made what he calls his “veteran buddies.” “[Veterans Day] means to me that I belong to a brotherhood for life and that each veteran means something to another,” said Hyman. “The great thing about being a vet is you belong to this brotherhood that accepts you unconditionally that you belong to the rest of your life.”

After the ceremonies, dedications and moments of silence, Hyman says that the “heart and soul of it” is going to the Golden Corral, which gives free meals to all military personnel, past or

present on Veterans Day. “It unifies us.” Hyman says that lining up again at the buffet style dinner and eating together is like being on base again in “the chow hall.” Hyman says the being able to share stories at this annual occasion is “like hitting the lottery.”

“Other people don’t understand us the way we understand each other,” Hyman says of his relationships with fellow veterans.

A well-accomplished man, Hyman recognizes that the “new veterans” have all fought in undeclared wars, and are sometimes less celebrated that veterans of the two World Wars, but that “a veteran still carries scars.”

Among his many other life endeavors, Hyman believes strongly in speaking out for other veterans and “sharing the wealth.”

News Mayor of Hillsboro Beach November 13, 2012

Continued From Page A1 Saint Rose alumna Carmen McGarry, 70, grew up in Champlain, New York and graduated from Saint Mary’s Academy at age 16, where several of the nuns encouraged her to attend Saint Rose. Now almost 50 years after graduating from college in 1962, McGarry lives in Hillsboro Beach, Florida, where she is slowly trying to retire from her position as Mayor of Hillsboro Beach.

McGarry, who graduated from Saint Rose at 20, was elected mayor in 2007, soon after she first started going to town hall meetings. She first ran for commissioner and took that position for four years; and then took the position as mayor and has been busy with the job ever since. Being mayor required numerous responsibilities, some of which included meeting the engineers who were involved in projects to re-nourish Hillsboro Beach as well as to replace the water plant, both of which combined cost the town around $10 million.

“It was a full time job and was quite an experience. Every day you learn something new,” said McGarry.

As mayor, McGarry also worked with the Hillsboro Beach Police Department. One of her responsibilities was to help appoint titles to the people of the police department. She also watched over the department and helped approve any necessary decisions being made.

One particular chief that worked with McGarry for more than 18 years was Tom Nagy.

Nagy enjoyed working with McGarry and said that she always had both the town’s and the employees’ best interests at heart.

“She was an extremely good mentor and she had a lot of wisdom to guide me with,” said Nagy.

On top of organizing several town projects and working with the police department, McGarry was also in charge of administration, hiring and firing

employees, writing letters, and other daily routines. There were very few members on the staff, so it was a big position to fill.

One particular member that McGarry worked with on the board was Deputy Town Clerk, Irene George. George enjoyed working under McGarry’s leadership and felt that she had done a lot for the town. George also said that McGarry did a wonderful job as both mayor and town historian.

“I looked up to her; she was very well liked and respected,” said George.

One of McGarry’s biggest accomplishments was becoming town historian. McGarry had always heard stories about some of the residents of Hillsboro Beach including some about the founder of AVON and GMAC, and even the secretary of state for Roosevelt. She found all of these stories intriguing and wanted to find out more about Hillsboro Beach, which is what inspired her to become town historian. McGarry eventually wrote an entire book on the town’s history called The Magnificent Mile, which is nearly 300 pages long, and was published first in 2000 and reprinted twice since. Writing the book took almost three years to complete and required lots of research since the town was so small and there had been almost nothing recorded about its history except the handwritten minutes from town meetings. Some of the best sources were funeral homes, which is how she found out about one of the first founders of Hillsboro Beach, Ernest Woller. McGarry even received the Cooper Kirk Award for Historical Research and Preservation for all of the research that she did on Hillsboro Beach.

McGarry stated that her other greatest accomplishment is her children, all of whom are successful. Her oldest daughter is the CEO of Grands Hospital in Cincinnati. McGarry’s other two daughters are attorneys and her son, John, played for the Green Bay Packers for a short time as an

offensive lineman and now works in real estate. She also has eight grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren, all of whom live in Chicago.

McGarry has also won several awards over the past 10 years.

She has been recognized in the Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame, as well as the Broward County Senior Hall of Fame in 2004. She was also acknowledged by the Broward Board of Education as the most talked about woman in a women’s contribution class offered by the school district. McGarry has even won Volunteer of the Year for the Area Agency on Aging in 2007.

McGarry is currently involved in a lot of volunteer work and is on several other boards as well.

She was one of the founders for the Lighthouse Board in Florida and has been involved for 15 years. She is also the President of the Condo Board and has been a member for 21 years. In addition, McGarry also takes part on several boards for the Broward Health

The Chronicle hospital including the Cancer Board and the Community Relations Board.

When McGarry is not busy volunteering and working, or visiting her children, she likes to create art. She used to design and make stained glass windows for many people’s homes. She even created an entire window for Saint Anne’s Chapel in Vermont.

However, her arthritis prevented her from continuing this hobby and instead she likes to paint and make jewelry. McGarry also enjoys traveling in her spare time.

She has visited 85 countries including Jordan, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

Before moving to Florida and becoming mayor, town historian, and a member of several boards, McGarry lived in Chicago for several years. After graduating from Saint Rose, she got married and moved to Chicago where she began graduate school at the University of Chicago for her masters in French. However, she was only able to complete nine months of school since she was pregnant with her first child. McGarry then became a member of Chicago

Education and taught French for a few years. She also taught archeology at the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago for five years. On top of this, she worked in one of several of her husband’s attorney offices everyday. Eventually this all stopped when she divorced in 1990 and moved to Florida.

McGarry went to Saint Rose back when it was an all-girls Catholic school. She suggested that the current women of Saint Rose who are looking to be successful should follow a few pieces of advice. McGarry said that most women do not prepare to be in a leadership position however, more and more are finding themselves in that situation. Therefore, McGarry suggested it would be wise for students to include a management, administration, and business aspect in their studies.

She also feels that setbacks in life are all part of the learning experience and that most people do not reach success unless they aim high to begin with.

“Hard work and belief in your goals are needed to achieve,” said McGarry in an e-mail.

MacDonald’s Mean Girls: the Musical a Crowd-Pleasing Production

The line started from inside the entrance of Saint Joseph’s Hall and piled outside onto the sidewalk. This was an unfamiliar barrier for the crowd waiting to be seated for John MacDonald’s production of Mean Girls: the Musical. I caught the afternoon show on Saturday, November 10.

It was rumored that you needed to reserve seats before hand, because the show was going to sell out. Never in my three years at the college have I attended a sold-out production, but I did as I was told and reserved two tickets the night before. Good thing that I did.

There was not an empty seat in the house. Grandparents, parents, and students silenced their cell-phones and turned the flash off their cameras as the actor’s instructed. At 2:00 pm exactly, the curtains opened and the audience was immediately thrown into Cady Heron’s first day at North Shore High School.

The show began very similarly to the movie. Cady Heron, played by Liz Tryon, acts naively about her first real day of school after being home-schooled in Africa for 17 years of her life. She scuffles through the crowded hallways, is ignored, judged and hit-on all within the same five minutes of her arrival. It doesn’t take long before she realizes that high-school is much like the jungle she left in Africa, ruthless and wild.

clique “The Plastics.” However, Cady makes the mistake of falling for the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic member, Regina George, and the drama, girl-fights, cheating and lying begins.

Mean Girls: the Musical was inspired by the motion picture Mean Girls, which was originally written by comedic genius Tina Fey. Much of MacDonald’s musical paralleled the popular movie, but it also had a few plot twists.

One of the biggest differences was that Janis Ian, played by Jessica Lamoureaux, turned out to be an actual lesbian, instead of a “rumored” one.

Also, Regina George, played

by Mikaela Holmes, did not spread the “Burn Book” pages around the school, it was Janis.

For anyone familiar with the movie (and what 18-22 year old in the 21st century isn’t?) these “twists” either excited or hindered their overall experience.

“I thought that the changes made to the storyline kept the musical interesting and the dance numbers were great. All of the Plastics, especially Mikaela Holmes as Regina, were perfectly cast. And Jessica Lamoureaux as Janice Ian stole the show,” said Breanna Robinson, a junior and business major at Saint Rose.

In the middle of the show, I feared that a lot of the “older” audience members were getting lost in the plot of high school pettiness and promiscuity, but as I glanced around, it appeared as if they were following along like the rest of us. Only once did I catch an older gentleman checking his iPhone and I felt it was quite the ironic sight. However,

he could not keep his eyes on the screen for too long, because the action taking place on stage was far too interesting.

Between Damien’s over-thetop performance of Janice’s gay best-friend, which actor Jake Dietrich pulled off perfectly, and Tori Casciaro’s performance of the dumbest “Plastic” Karen Smith that was ingeniously close to the movie, MacDonald definitely captured the comedy and awkwardness of the original film.

The show did not go without recognition either. Only after I saw the production, did I learn that MacDonald was entered into the New York Musical Theatre Festival's Blockbuster to Broadway competition.

“John had decided to do Mean Girls: the Musical back in May and a representative from the contest approached us on our Facebook fan page in late September.

We had no idea this contest existed,” said Susan Walensky, stage manager and choral actor in the production.

A representative from the competition came to one of the performances, but neither MacDonald nor Walensky knew which one he/she attended. Walensky mentioned that a few hours after their final performance they received the results.

Amongst many of the awards, Regina, Janice and Karen were recognized as the best actresses in the competition.

“We were up against three other Mean Girls productions and eight other shows [in] total. The show did not win the best overall.

We also won best script, which was written by John!”

I Can’t Believe You Watched That:

Rat Race (2001)

By RACHEL M. BOLTON Managing Editor If could get your hands on two million dollars, what would you do to get it?

Seven strangers in a Las Vegas casino find themselves invited to a special brunch, only to find the owner of the casino, Donald P. Sinclair (Monty Python’s John Cleese) waiting for them with a special proposal. Sinclair tells them that he has put a suitcase filled with two million dollars into a locker at a train station 500 miles away in Silver City, New Mexico. The first person there gets to keep the money.

Little do they know that the whole race is an elaborate gambling scheme for millionaires.

Sinclair believes that he can get away with it because he is “eccentric.” He gathered his fellow rich men together to bet on who would get there first. The contestants first think that this is just a big scam and they are going to go back to their lives and forget about the whole thing. But soon they talk about how they could team up and share the money.

However, that does not last long as greed kicks in and the race begins. They all try to get on an airplane to get there quickly, but two

members of the contestants make sure that no airplanes will be going anywhere.

The cast is filled with actors known for their comedic chops, and the strength of the film is the chemistry between them. Whoopi Goldberg is a woman who is meeting the daughter she gave up for adoption for the first time.

They bond over their adventure and even steal a rocket car.

Amy Smart is a helicopter pilot, with a very wild side, and is not happy to see her boyfriend cheating on her. Cuba Gooding Jr. is an NFL referee who has become infamous due to him making a bad call during a tense game. He gets stuck on a bus full of I Love Lucy impersonators. Seth Green plays your standard ‘90s slacker, whose dimwit brother pierced his own tongue. Best of all, Mr. Bean himself (Rowan Atkinson) plays a foppish Italian who has narcolepsy.

Rat Race takes the time to develop the relationships between the protagonists and even with the secondary and minor characters, because in a film like this, everyone is memorable.

The film is also an educational experience. You will learn that there are different types of Barbies and to always take a squirrel from the squirrel lady. On the analytical level, Race Rat passes the Bechdel test, a rare thing for a comedy film.

If you enjoy Rat Race, I recommend It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, the 1963 film that it was based on. Like the latter, Mad World is just as hilarious. It has more cameos from famous comedians, including the Three Stooges and Mr. Howell from Gilligan’s Island. However, I think that the ending of Rat Race is far more satisfactory that its predecessor. If you need a break from the stresses of the winding semester, Rat Race is the cure.

Skyfall Marks the Satisfying Return of James Bond in One of His Finest Films

WILLIAM SMITH Staff Writer It was 1962 when Sean Connery first graced the screen as James Bond for the first time in Dr. No. Fifty years later, Bond is back in his 23rd film, Skyfall, with Daniel Craig stepping back into the role, his third time doing so. The film is entertaining, with propulsive action, dry British wit, and memorable characters: exactly what a Bond film should be. It should be a wholly satisfying experience for anyone who’s been a fan of Bond, whether they were there for the earliest days of Connery, the goofiest days of Roger Moore, or just joined in for the grittier days of Craig.

and Hannibal Lector, suave and sophisticated with a hint of insanity. Javier Bardem gives a suitably intense performance as Silva, and he proves to be one of the most memorable and interesting villains the franchise has had over the course of its 50 year run.

Judi Dench’s M has always been a reliable presence, as nobody can really express exasperation with Bond quite like Dench.

The character Q returns in Skyfall as well, after being absent from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, played by Ben Whishaw.

Whishaw quickly revitalizes the character and makes it his own (and he gets the single funniest line in the film, as well).

Ralph Fiennes portrays a former colonel working with MI6, and his presence is fun, though CESAR/WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

it would have been nice to see more of him. Naomie Harris as fellow field agent Eve provides Bond with a nice counterpoint, and her exchanges with Craig provide some of the best dialogue exchanges in the film.

And then there’s Craig himself, who manages to continue bringing gravitas to the role of James Bond as he has been doing since 2006. Every actor portraying James Bond has brought something different to the character, and each has their own strengths, but Craig has been knocking it out of the ballpark since day one, and his final scene in Casino Royale cemented him as my favorite Bond in the franchise’s history.

Director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) gives the film a different sensibility than the other films in the franchise, while still making it fit in well with the other films, a task that is no small feat. Coupled with the stunning cinematography of Roger Deakins (best known for his work with the Coen brothers),

Skyfall is easily the best-looking film James Bond has ever been a part of. The introduction of Silva alone is a masterful work of staging, framing, and acting that instantly becomes one of the finest moments the franchise has ever seen.

In the end, Skyfall could be a bit shorter; the film occasionally feels bloated, and losing 10-15 minutes would have helped it rise above some of the best entries in the franchise. Otherwise, though, the film works amazingly well and continues the tradition of Craig’s James Bond as a more realistic, complex agent than we had seen up to this point. Skyfall should be a well-remembered film in the James Bond canon, and will hopefully be looked back on with reverence by the time the 100 year anniversary of Bond comes around. See you in 2062, everybody!

The Unsettling Problem with American Horror Story’s Second Season

When the first season of American Horror Story premiered last fall, I was ecstatic. It was a show that encompassed a dozen different whacked-out elements of a severely messed up family into a nicely delivered, eccentric and terrifying package. I couldn’t wait for the second season, subtitled Asylum, which would deal more with “workplace drama” in an institution for the criminally insane.

Though only four episodes in, the “workplace drama” seems to be only a backdrop for a typhoon of mismatched, disconnected sadists with little motivation.

Taking place at Briarcliff Manor in 1964, Asylum hopes to give viewers a glimpse into the harsh conditions of mental institutions of the time period where people would be kept for a variety of rea-

sons, including the then “crime” of homosexuality. Series creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have a plethora of material for “workplace drama” that would expose the terrors of the time period, including issues of race, sexual orientation, religious tensions, and general “treatment” of patients in mental institutions.

Instead of taking a tactful, thought-provoking look at the questions raised by the time period, the show has now taken to valuing shock over sense, forcing otherwise interesting characters into situations that are difficult for viewers to stomach. The first season of Horror Story offered plenty of uncomfortable situations, but they were in service to the overarching theme of psychological struggles within each character. Asylum hopes to do the same thing, but ends up exploiting its already unfortunate char-

acters.

For instance, the character of Lana Winters (Sarah Paulson), a lesbian journalist, is committed to Briarcliff Manor under false pretenses concocted by the sadistic Sister Jude (Jessica Lange).

Once there, she witnesses the cruelty of the institution and the backwards manner in which patients are treated. The only way Lana can escape the walls of the asylum is to be “cured” of her homosexuality.

In last week’s episode, she was subjected to “aversion therapy” in a particularly graphic, uncomfortable scene. While such instance might have happened, the scene was not used to further Lana’s struggle, but rather to shock viewers to the point of looking away from their TV sets. It could be argued that such discomfort is the point the show is trying to convey, I would have to disagree.

To use someone’s most personal struggle as a form of entertainment strikes me as wrong.

Continuing the senseless acts of discomfort is Lange’s Sister Jude.

The show tries to make her character incredibly complex, giving her a troubled, sinful past, only to be redeemed by God. However, the show seems to delight in giving her sadistic, sexual fantasies, such as beating the inmates with canes and wearing lacy red lingerie beneath her habit. Sure, Asylum plays on common tropes of nuns and even ventures into an unspoken territory about them, but such hefty material should be well-addressed with ample screen time. The failure here lies in the fact that too many stories are happening all at once, and none of them seem wholly connected.

I’d like to give you every plotline so far this year, but it would fill an entire issue. Instead, I’ll list some of the big ones: Adam Levine, alien abduction, serial killers, homosexuality, sadistic clergy, nymphomaniacs, child

abuse, self-defense, interracial marriage, possession, Nazi doctors, sexual fetishes, the undead…oh, and Anne Frank.

Sound like a lot to handle? You bet. Pick a few, and there are certainly at least two others tied into the same story. While it might sound interesting, the show is too ambitious. The storylines just melt together into one mass of angry confusion. They are so loosely connected that it’s easy to forget what you’re watching. It’s just one shock after another without much substance.

While I will continue to watch Asylum, I can only hope that the characters are given a bit more depth to underscore their reasons for being locked in such an awful place. Sometimes, truth can be more terrifying than reality, and if that’s what Murphy and Falchuk are hoping for, then they’ve got a lot of work to do. If Asylum continues down this path of psychotic disconnect, I might have to be committed.

Rejoice for Four More Years

Rejoice for four more years!

Rejoice as Mitt Romney is not our new leader! And best of all, rejoice because the campaign ads are over! With Florida now in, it is 332 Obama, 206 Romney in the Electoral College. Now, I know the rich, white, straight man has not had a chance to run things yet, but we are a much different America than we were in the past, and it is time to move forward.

Personally, I would have loved to see an independent (NOT Gary Johnson) win the presidential race—like the two-party system will ever be broken in the near future. Nonetheless, I was very relieved (along with the majority of others) when Diane Sawyer on ABC announced Obama’s victory in Ohio and in the election.

Of course, there still remains the other side, the side that wanted Romney to win. Republican

supporters gathered in their large room where they hoped Romney would make his victory speech, but instead delivered a concession speech. Not only was the hall of Romney supporters silent when Obama’s win was announced, but FOX News (Faux News) was completely lost. Right wing extremists and religious conservatives were outraged at Romney’s loss.

Donald Trump on Twitter was completely unrelenting in his attacks on the election results. For the most part, he was in complete disbelief with the rest of the conservative community. “The electoral college is a disaster for a democracy,” and that’s why we are a Republic and not a pure Democracy. “This election is a total sham and a travesty. We are not a democracy!”; “Our country is now in serious and unprecedented trouble...like never before.”; “Let’s fight like hell and stop this great and disgusting injustice!

The world is laughing at us, — Actually Obama won by a landslide in a BBC international poll in 22 countries. He even said that

Seventeen... states legalized [marijuana] for medical purposes, and two...votes to have it for recreational purposes.

“He lost the popular vote by a lot and lost the election. We should have a revolution in this country!” There are several reasons as to this statement makes no sense: Obama won the popular vote in the end, Bush and Gore 2000—I bet you were not saying that back then because the winner was a Republican, and revolutions throughout history have been against the “fat cat” rich societies, just ask the Russians and French (France being a country where Obama saw the highest numbers in the BBC poll). Trump might want to re-think that statement because we would be coming after him in the event of another revolution and it seems he did because that tweet was deleted.

Actually, Trump only calls for revolution to protect his own assets and wealth because without Obama in the White House, he would not be taxed even more and will hold more power with a conservative president. Yeah, it sounds like you are only thinking of the “good of America.” Also, he added that the “Romney cam-

paign used me in 6 primary states and won every one—they should have used me in Florida and Ohio & he would be President.” Get over yourself, Trump. I could not help but notice that we “average folk” rejoiced more at Obama’s triumph than the millionaires and billionaires, I wonder why that is.

This election no doubt resulted in a more liberal United States.

The legalization of marijuana was on the ballot for a few states (no, not New York). Seventeen of these states legalized it for medical purposes, and two of them (Washington and Colorado) now voted to have it for recreational purposes. Also, for the first time, two openly gay politicians were voted into Congress, a milestone for the United States. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Sean Patrick Maloney of New York celebrated not only their election victories, but contributing greatly to a new, open-minded America.

Maryland, Maine, Washington, and Minnesota. Democrat, Elizabeth Warren, an American bankruptcy law expert and Harvard Law School professor, has been elected to be the first woman senator of Massachusetts. Keep a close eye on Warren because her

name could end up on the 2016 presidential ballot (or Hillary Clinton, pay attention to her, too).

Unfortunately, not all the outcomes of the election were progressive. A small business owner from Georgia fired some employees and cut back hours for the others because of Barack Obama’s re-election. He stated that he could not keep business running under Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Before he fired two full-time employees, he made sure that they voted for Obama. Weeks before the election, some business owners and employers sent out a notice telling their employees to vote for Romney, and if Obama won there could be potential problems. Voter intimidation is very illegal and federal law offers fines and imprisonment for anyone who “intimidates, threatens, and/or coerces someone for the purpose of interfering with the right of such other person to vote or to vote as they may choose.”

Now that Obama has won his second term, and that his grace period is long behind him, American’s are going to be much tougher on him, and now he needs to deliver everything he said he would. With the Republicans still in control of the House, legislation might be a little difficult for Obama, but if they all work together and set the “left-wing,” “right-wing,” and parties aside, almost anything can be accomplished. Honestly, I am going to miss all the presidential race drama, but certain politicians will always find ways to entertain the U.S. and the rest of the world.

But, we are all safe until the 2014 midterm elections begin!

forcing so many shots, and is playing not only on the offensive side of the ball, but on the defensive side as well.

However, the biggest hurdle for this team is still on the horizon. Two of the team’s most valuable players, Amar’e Stoudemire, and Iman Shumpert, are out with injuries. When those two come back and are inserted into the rotation, it will be very interesting to see if the chemistry of the team is affected. Stoudemire, like An-

thony, wants the ball in his hands, and there are only so many shots to go around. Stoudemire also is not known for playing defense.

The key to the Knicks season will be continuing to play tough defense, and for the team to continue to play unselfishly. It is easy to win in the NBA when your team is shooting a high percentage. Knicks fans will know if this team is for real, or not, when they can win consistently without scoring 90 points.

Are The Knicks Back For Good?

By SAM MAXWELL Staff Writer While it may only be four games into the regular season, the New York Knicks are looking like a team that may contend for the Eastern Conference next spring.

Yes, I am a Knicks fan. And yes, I obviously hold onto every last glimpse of greatness I see with this team given their track record over the last decade. However, this is not a typical overreaction to a hot start by a Knicks fan that is wearing orange and blue colored glasses. This team is different from years past, and it is because of two words: defense, and unselfishness.

Through the first four games of the regular season, the Knicks are scoring an average of 104 points per game and only giving up 87 ppg. In years past, the Knicks would usually be close to the top

of the league in scoring, but usually giving up just as many points.

While the NBA has become point frenzy, with points racking up faster than the national debt, the teams that win the championship make the stops when they count. That is why Mike D’Antoni teams will never win a championship. In the NBA, offense wins games, defense wins championships.

Along with the Knicks putting defense a priority, the Knicks made some key additions in the offseason that compliment superstar Carmelo Anthony nicely.

Two of the additions were guards Jason Kidd, and Raymond Felton. So far this season, Woodson has been starting Kidd and Felton together in the backcourt.

Kidd has been averaging nine ppg in only 22 minutes, while Felton has been averaging 13.7 ppg and six assists per game. Both Kidd and Felton are outstanding in get-

ting shots to open players, and are unselfish with the ball in their hands. This unselfishness has been contagious as the Knicks are averaging 21 assists per game.

The Knicks also added “bigmen” Kurt Thomas, Rasheed Wallace, and Marcus Camby. All three add veteran leadership, and know their roles.

Golden Knights Fall to UMass Lowell, Beat Merrimack

By SHAWN BERMAN Staff Writer Last Friday night, The College of Saint Rose Women’s Volleyball team hosted Northeast-10 Conference opponent, The Riverhawks of UMass Lowell.

In a match that went four sets (22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 13-25), The Golden Knights had their seven game win streak snapped at the hands of the Riverhawks.

Saint Rose freshman outside hitter Kelsey Lace led all attackers with 18 kills on a .256 hitting percentage. The Golden Knights also tallied up eight service aces.

Sophomore setter Tori Daniels racked up 24 assists to lead Saint Rose, while sophomore setter Ariana Wilson generated 19 assists for The Golden Knights.

This game was highlighted by numerous attacking and serving

errors by The Golden Knights, and The Riverhawks took advantage of this. UMass Lowell had to manufacture a comeback in the first set on their way to winning it. Three attacking errors

by Saint Rose, and a 5-0 run in the middle of the match that was led by junior setter Olivia Parkins highlighted the Riverhawks first set comeback. Parkins produced 16 assists to help The Riverhawks obtain a .412 hitting percentage.

The Golden Knights seemed to be on their way to a second set victory, but another timely 7-0 run by The Riverhawks separated them enough from Saint Rose to take a 2-0 lead, despite the effort from Lace and junior middle hitter Alex Gagliano, who each had four kills.

control of the set for The Golden Knights and tallied up five kills on a .833 hitting percentage.

Senior outside hitter Kayleigh Quinn marked up four kills for Saint Rose, with the fourth one proving to be a set winner. Tori Daniels and Wilson also had a collective 13 assists in the game.

However, The Golden Knights ended their own comeback hopes in the fourth set, dropping the match as a whole, 3-1. This set seemed to be the theme of the night for Saint Rose as they forced ten attacking errors along with three service errors on a -.028 attacking percentage, dropping the set 13-25.

The Golden Knights had a quick turn around and jumped right back into action Saturday afternoon against The Warriors of Merrimack.

In their final home game of the regular season, Saint Rose came

out looking strong and swept the warriors in three sets (25-20, 2523, 25-20). Defense was a key component to their victory, as The Golden Knights recorded 13 blocks. Junior middle hitter Alex Gagliano was the driving force for Saint Rose, as she generated ten of the 13 blocks.

The first set was back-andforth early on. After being tied at 8-8, The Golden Knights went on a dominating 11-3 run. Gagliano was involved early on in the first set as she recorded six kills to go along with four blocks. The College of Saint Rose clinched the first set on a kill from Ariana Wilson.

The Warriors jumped out to an early lead in the second set.

with the help of Wilson, who recorded three straight service aces.

Lace then closed out the set for Saint Rose, scoring two of the final three points for them, to give The Golden Knights a 2-0 lead.

In the third set, Saint Rose came up with a total of 19 digs and four blocks to give The Warriors a -.056 hitting percentage.

Kayleigh Quinn had a set high eight digs to go along with her three kills. Carissa Dube was also a big factor in the final set, as she tallied up six kills for The Golden Knights.

With this win, The College of Saint Rose is now 17-9, and a collective 10-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Looking ahead, The Golden Knights now await to see their opponent for the Northeast-10 Tournament. Saint Rose will find out whom they play this Tuesday night.

By JOSHUA NATOLI Sports Editor The Nolan Gymnasium was the location of the matchup this past Friday night between The College of Saint Rose Golden Knights and Mercy College Mavericks. The matchup was the first game for the Golden Knights as they look to rebound off of their disappointing 2011-2012 season in the Saint Rose Tip-off Tournament The Golden Knights came out of the gate strong after a mid-range jumper fell from junior guard Kareem Thomas. The Golden Knights swiftly fell into a full-court press defense. Both teams kept up the intense defensive pressure, allowing for only nine total points to be scored through the first four minutes of play.

the Golden Knights favor until an alley-oop by the Mavericks sparked a 7-0 run with 13 minutes left to play in the first half.

With ten minutes left in the first half both teams looked stagnant offensively, with Mercy in the lead 14-10.

Numerous turnovers by the Mustangs allowed Saint Rose to go on an 18-2 run. After landing in the bonus, the Golden Knights finally evened the score at 16 apiece when freshman Tyler Sayre made two free throws with six minutes to go in the first half.

Not long after, junior Dan Mundweiler also made two free throws to take a two point lead.

goal during the last ten minutes of the first half. The Golden Knights retaliated with a hard drive to the basket by senior Andre Pope, which led to a foul and two made free throws to put the Golden Knights up 30-18 at halftime.

The Golden Knights came out of the halftime gate strong with Andre Pope driving to the basket for a lay-up on an assist from junior Dominykas Milka.

Mercy also decided to end their offensive woes by scoring three straight buckets, one being a fast break dunk.

Both defenses seemed much more lethargic in the second half allowing both teams to crank up the offensive intensity. The Golden Knights were able to maintain their double-digit lead through the first five minutes of the half

with two fast break lay-ups by Dan Mundweiler and Kareem Thomas, along with two threepoint field goals by Andre Pope, who finished with a game-high 21 points Saint Rose opened up a 20 point lead over Mercy when a pair of free throws from Thomas found the bottom of the net with ten minutes left to go. Foul trouble began to affect the Golden Knights with five minutes left to play, but pushed through to maintain a 15 point lead.

Through the final minutes the Golden Knights stayed focused on running the clock out as much as possible, while avoiding a pestilent Mercy full-court defense.

The Golden Knights were able to stay relatively unchallenged until the of the game, upending the

Mustangs 69-53.

Although his team came out on top in its first contest, coach Brian Beaury thinks his team could have played better, “Sloppy, that’s my initial response to that game, I thought we were a little casual with the basketball.” Even though he thought his Golden Knights could have made better decisions, Beaury thinks that his team played their hearts out, “One thing I’m thrilled about is I thought our effort was absolutely incredible.”

The Golden Knights rode their momentum into the second game of the tournament, knocking off Concordia in an 85-56 rout.

The Golden Knights next contest is a Northeast-10 Conference home matchup against New Haven this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
