e live on the surface of the Earth, which is called the crust. Every continent and ocean lies on the Earth’s crust. Beneath the crust is a layer of rock called the mantle. Parts of the mantle are hot and molten (liquid) and can break through the crust to form a volcano.

The equator is an imaginary line dividing the world in half. It is positioned at latitude 0˚ (zero degrees). The northern hemisphere is above the equator and the southern hemisphere is below it.
