‘Reading age’ in this catalogue refers to the reading level of the text. ‘Interest age’ refers to the appeal of the content of the books and gives consideration to both unenthusiastic and able readers. We see books as an invaluable learning and development aid, especially in the first few years of life, so our books are not only entertaining and stimulating, but also highly engaging and interactive. Our books meet European Safety Standards (CE mark) and all our board books are sturdy and have rounded edges. The virgin paper fibre used in the production of our books, catalogues and office supplies is sourced from sustainable forests. Sustainable forests are ecologically managed to ensure a healthy balance between the demands for paper today and the forests’ natural ecosystem, and to ensure that the needs of our readers and their children and grandchildren can continue to be met in the future.

The power of the story
Welcome to the new catalogue for The Salariya Book Company and its three imprints, Scribblers, Book House and Scribo. This catalogue is viewable online at www.salariya.com In our Scribblers imprint we’re adding a new arts and crafts series called Quick Start for ages 5+. Other imprint highlights include the winner of the 2018 StratfordSalariya Children’s Picture Book Prize, Luna and the Moon Rabbit, an enchanting and beautifully-illustrated story inspired by Asian folklore. We also have a range of canvas bound and die-cut picture books such as Sleepyhead, Incy Wincy Spider and Farm Friends which use mirrors and pictures of faces to stimulate young readers’ mental development. Our Book House imprint has lots of wonderful titles offering an engaging introduction to STEAM subjects. Our two new Beastly Science information books explore how today’s scientists are using the process of ‘biomimicry’ to apply the amazing abilities of different animal species to the human world. The bestselling Whiz Kids titles are being reissued in two volumes, introducing children to concepts like measurements, gravity and the Moon. Also in Book House, we’re adding the fun arts and crafts title Fashion Drawing. Another exciting release is Scarlet Hood, a heart-warming graphic novel about a girl who uses a magic hoodie to travel back to the age of the Vikings. We are adding two new titles to our family-oriented Very Peculiar History series, on the ever-popular topics of Winston Churchill and the Thames river, and the Top 10 Worst titles are being reissued in a bumper 208-page anthology entitled The Big Scream. For Scribo we’re publishing The Curse of the Speckled Monster, a two-volume Dickensian mystery-adventure about an orphan boy drawn into a murky world of bodysnatching in 19th century England. New titles will be added to our bestselling Long-Lost Secret Diary of the World’s Worst... series: Dinosaur Hunter and Astronaut. With over 500 titles to choose from, Salariya’s unique and engaging books will appeal to even the most reluctant of readers. I do hope you will enjoy our books.

astles were very difficult to attack, and once they were built of stone, it was hard to burn them down. The longer a castle held out against a siege, the worse it would be for its inhabitants if they were captured. Attacking armies often sent messengers into castles to urge them to surrender, or with threats of a dreadful death if they refused to give in.
pLadders
uFoot-soldiers
Soldiers attacking on foot. They were easy targets for archers. How many foot-soldiers can you count?
Attacking soldiers would also try to climb castle walls using ladders. How many ladders can you see?

Cleaning station
Pavla Hanáčková / Linh Dao
Even though fish live in water, they still need a wash and brush up! They don’t need any soap though – just a bunch of cleaners! All they have to do is swim by a cleaning station, get in line, and wait their turn. Little fish soon take charge of them, cleaning parasites from the surface of their body, gills, and oral cavity. About 45 species of fish and many shrimps provide this cleaning service.
We l c o m e ! Th i s i s m y n e w cleaning station.
If there’s any place that the fish’s tiny mouths can’t reach, shrimps come to the rescue. Their long legs and claws provide an excellent tool. Shrimps use them to cut away pieces of protruding skin, or to pick leftover food from teeth.
Wrasses Wrasses run their cleaning stations in coral reefs around the world’s seas and oceans. There’s no shortage of clients as wrasses are indispensable in this regard. They remove not only parasites and bacteria from their customers’ skin, but also damaged or dead skin cells.
Oh, oh, that tickles!

Competition is stiff, so the cleaners have to know how to best attract customers. Wrasses rely on their striking colouration to instantly catch the attention of potential clients. They also move their body so that the sunlight will reflect on it. Shrimps, meanwhile, wave their claws and sometimes even add showy dance moves!

Shrimps – cleaning specialists
So, why is this process mutually beneficial? Well, the fish end up amazingly clean, while the cleaners have a welcome feast. Even sharks, rays, cephalopods, and turtles enjoy this good service.
There are long queues, but all the customers wait in an orderly fashion – except for one predator. The Barracuda is attended to as a matter of priority and never has to wait. There are no objections as none of the queue wants to end up as a convenient snack!

•
Dolphins and whales are similar as they are both intelligent marine mammals that use sounds underwater to communicate and navigate.
•
Both whales and dolphins need to breathe fresh air, which they do through blowholes in the top of their head. Many whales have two blowholes, while dolphins have only one.
•
Dolphins are toothed whales and the largest dolphin is the Orca (often mistaken for a whale because of its more common name: killer whale).
A whale makes sounds and songs...
J
ust like bats, whales and dolphins use sound to find their way around. They make a range of clicks and ‘songs’ to send soundwaves far underwater. Those waves bounce off objects and other creatures, to give whales and dolphins information of whatever is around them. The range of their low-frequency sonar is amazing, as they can find tiny objects in total darkness many metres away. They use sonar much more than sight to find their food, families and direction. This echolocation deep underwater is incredible ‘sound science’.
The sound waves bounce off nearby fish and the whale uses these reflected sound waves to locate its prey.
bowhead whale
Scientists are very interested in the Arctic bowhead whale, which can reach 18 metres long. It can live for over 200 years, without getting age-related disease. With over 1000 times more cells than humans, bowhead whales still don’t seem to have an increased risk of cancer cells. By studying this whale’s DNA, scientists hope to discover its healthy secrets and maybe apply them to human genes. That might just help you to live to 200 years old, too!
sound in water
Sound travels 4 times faster in water than it does on land, so whales and dolphins can react quickly. Dolphins are so intelligent that some species have been used by the military to find underwater mines and look for
passengers lost at sea. Some whales migrate thousands of miles across the oceans and return to the same place each year.

Your sense of taste lets you savour delicious tastes such as chocolate, and not-sodelicious ones such as sprouts.
You may have noticed your mouth and nose are close together.Your senses of taste and smell work as a team. Together they vet all the food that is about to enter your body, to make sure it is safe and good to eat (though you may think this doesn’t apply to sprouts).
Gulp!
1 Scents such as the creamy whiff of ice-cream enter your nostrils and waft to a cave-like space called the nasal cavity. 2 The roof of this cave has a scentsensing patch that sends messages to the brain, which identifies the smell. 3 Teeth chop and mash your food. The tongue then pushes the food to the back of your mouth, ready to swallow. 4 Taste buds on your tongue and the roof of your mouth pick up the scrummy taste of ice-cream and send taste signals to the brain. 5 Saliva wets your food, which helps you to taste it. Saliva also makes food soggy so it slips down your throat.

How do you do your research?
I
There are numerous online resources that I use for inspiration, however, I often get ideas from dress fabrics, vintage clothing, nature, and animals.
How would you describe your style?
Crisp, fresh, and multi-textural. I like to create the ‘unexpected’ through happy accidents and unusual combinations.
The iconic striped top
n 1913 Coco Chanel opened her first boutique in the chic seaside town of Deauville, France. When Chanel launched her innovative collection, she included a redesigned version of a fisherman’s sweater called a chandail. The popularity of Chanel’s nautical-inspired clothes spread and three years later they featured in both the American and British editions of Vogue magazine. Throughout the 20th century fashion designers from Mary Quant to Yohji Yamamoto to Jean Paul Gaultier to Alexander McQueen, have been inspired by naval uniforms, fishermen’s workwear, and pirate style clothes.
Use black fineliner pen to ink in the pencil drawing of the model, porthole and decking. Use paper glue to stick the skirt and top on the model. When dry stick the ships wheel and flower design on the model’s skirt.
This striking design contrasts a nautical look long-sleeved top with a gathered anklelength skirt in vibrant crimson decorated with a riot of fuchsia pink flowers and a ship’s wheel.

8 Key 1 Square-rigged masts allow the hoisting of numerous small sails that are more efficient than a single large sail. Fore-and-aft sails can be flown with a reduced crew and are efficient when working to windward. 2 A cannonball hole in a small sail affects only one sail. A hole in a large sail would eventually tear a larger area and reduce further the vessel’s flying power. 3 Four rotating Michaux cannon based on the Gribeauval system.
