The power of the story

Welcome to the new catalogue for The Salariya Book Company imprints: Scribblers, Book House and Scribo. Our new books for 2020 are set to be our most wide ranging and innovative in thirty-one years of publishing. Scribblers highlights include the launch of the Scribble Monsters series of activity books, themed around copying, colouring, tracing, painting, sticking and printing. Pre-school children can learn from the Scribble Monster characters: Inky, Blot, H.B., Pablo, Nibs and their pet Smudge – to complete a range of drawing-inspired activities that will aid in the development of a range of vital skills from manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to foundational writing skills. We also have the new Creature Features board books that use touch and trace (ideal for developing early writing skills) and lift-the-flap elements to bring the animal world to life. There are a range of excellent new picture book titles also, such as Look, Daddy, Look! – the winner of the 2020 Stratford-Salariya Children’s Picture Book Prize – by debut author-illustrator Manlu Tu, which tells the story of a daddy hedgehog searching for his lost daughter. Billy and the Balloons by the award-winning authorillustrator pairing of Elizabeth Dale and Patrick Corrigan, is about a boy lifted into the sky by a large bunch of balloons who ends up helping Santa to deliver his presents on Christmas Eve. There’s also a brand-new Christmas adventure starring Old Bear and friends from BAFTA award-winning author-illustrator, Jane Hissey: Little Bear and the Silver Star. The much-anticipated latest entry in the beloved Old Bear series, it is sure to become a future classic. In Book House, alongside You Wouldn’t Want To Sail on the Mary Rose! in partnership with the Mary Rose Trust, we are launching the Live from the Crypt series of non-fiction history books with a ghoulish twist. Each volume features the cast and crew of an undead talk show interviewing the ghosts of famous historical figures like Tutankhamun and King Henry VIII about their lives, with comic strips dramatising episodes from their stories. For those of a more scientific persuasion, the Books with X-Ray Vision series features frightening creatures such as dinosaurs and sharks, with pictures of the animals that can be held up to the light to reveal their skeletons. There are also new A Very Peculiar History titles on topical issues like the Olympic Games and climate change for readers aged 8 to 80. There are plenty of guides for the artistically-inclined, including two new Draw Kawaii titles about drawing cute food and cute magical creatures, and two titles in the Draw 1001 series, featuring 1,001 images each of animal species and aircraft and bite-sized advice on technique that can be used as inspiration. For Scribo we’re adding more titles to the best-selling Long-Lost Secret Diary of the World’s Worst… series – Hollywood Director and Samurai – both foregrounding strong female characters, as well as Classic Comix, eight fast-paced graphic novel retellings of literary classics, including Frankenstein. You can also check out children’s entertainer and educator Mr Dilly performing a stage show based on You Wouldn’t Want To Be An Egyptian Mummy! from the global bestselling You Wouldn’t Want To… series at four literary festivals across the UK. With more than 500 titles to choose from in the Salariya imprints, we have books for all ages and interests that will appeal to both avid and reluctant readers. I hope you will enjoy our books as much as we have enjoyed working on them.

Cleaning station

Pavla Hanáčková / Linh Dao

Even though fish live in water, they still need a wash and brush up! They don’t need any soap though – just a bunch of cleaners! All they have to do is swim by a cleaning station, get in line, and wait their turn. Little fish soon take charge of them, cleaning parasites from the surface of their body, gills, and oral cavity. About 45 species of fish and many shrimps provide this cleaning service.

We l c o m e ! Th i s i s m y n e w cleaning station.

If there’s any place that the fish’s tiny mouths can’t reach, shrimps come to the rescue. Their long legs and claws provide an excellent tool. Shrimps use them to cut away pieces of protruding skin, or to pick leftover food from teeth.

Competition is stiff, so the cleaners have to know how to best attract customers. Wrasses rely on their striking colouration to instantly catch the attention of potential clients. They also move their body so that the sunlight will reflect on it. Shrimps, meanwhile, wave their claws and sometimes even add showy dance moves!

Shrimps – cleaning specialists

So, why is this process mutually beneficial? Well, the fish end up amazingly clean, while the cleaners have a welcome feast. Even sharks, rays, cephalopods, and turtles enjoy this good service.

There are long queues, but all the customers wait in an orderly fashion – except for one predator. The Barracuda is attended to as a matter of priority and never has to wait. There are no objections as none of the queue wants to end up as a convenient snack!

‘ The whole series supports the curriculums of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, but even if you don’t follow a curriculum at all there is guaranteed to be something in the range that will inform and delight your children... As well as being excellent, informative books, these would be invaluable to anyone who has a reluctant reader because the kids were desperate to know what the funny pictures were about.’ Maz, acornstem.co.uk

his narrative non-fiction series tells the stories of great moments in science as if through the eyes of the scientists and inventors themselves. The stories are told like an adventure, with all the dramas, missteps, and struggles along the way, ultimately leading to the ‘Eureka’ moment of triumph. The books use all the tropes of fiction – dialogue, action, suspense – to tell true-life tales of human discovery and achievement.

THROUGH THE WALL

T

his powerful graphic novel tells the story of a giant wall separating two civilisations: one of blue people and one of yellow. Each side is forbidden to speak to the other, because they are sworn enemies. One day, a boy and a girl from opposite sides of the wall meet and decide to break down the boundaries that divide their peoples forever. The debut graphic novel from Jonathan Standing, this is a stunningly-illustrated story with an important message about overcoming prejudice and fear of the other. Jonathan Standing
