Welcome to The Salariya Book Company’s new catalogue featuring its imprints: Scribblers, Book House and Scribo. Scribblers Scribblers highlights include Trixie The Witch’s Cat, a classic story from picture book genius and best-selling author/ illustrator Nick Butterworth, and Edmund The Elephant Who Forgot – a humorous, detail‑packed book from debut author Kate Dalgleish. We also have two new beautifully-illustrated volumes in the Myths series, this time retelling tales from ancient Egypt, featuring gods, monsters and pharaohs. In an early festive mood? The Christmas Chronicles is a magical collection of 24 short Christmas stories set in the North Pole as Santa and his elves prepare for Christmas. The book is designed as an advent calendar in the build-up to Christmas with one story being read every night from the 1st to the 24th December. Touch and Trace ABC and 123 use wacky artwork to familiarise very young readers with basic numbers and the letters of the alphabet. 2021 sees the launch of our early learning series – Scribble Monsters’ Guide To Modern Manners. The inquisitive Scribble Monsters playfully help young children get to grips with the ins and outs of good manners, good hygiene and good behaviour. Sweet Dreamzzz and Magical Pets are adorable board books that teach young children about the importance of a good night’s sleep – making them ideal bedtime reading. Book House We have a new addition to the Adventures in the Real World series: AD79 The Destruction of Pompeii. This title explores the famous Roman town of Pompeii in the years before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the timeline of its destruction and its subsequent rediscovery hundreds of years later. It uses a mix of easy-to-read text, fact boxes providing historical context, and comic strips to dramatise significant episodes of Pompeii’s fascinating history. We also have a range of new titles in the Live from the Crypt series – information books with a chat show approach where the ghosts of famous pirates, scientific pioneers, Roman and Chinese emperors and other historical figures discuss their eventful lives. The use of comic strips and script-style text bring history hilariously to life. We also have a new series called Draw 1001 by award-winning artist Mark Bergin showing how to deconstruct and recognise the simple shapes that go into constructing a detailed drawing. Of a more literary bent? What Shall We Write? is an informative and interactive guide to creative writing in its many forms for budding young authors. It contains introductory information on the building blocks of writing a story, as well as enjoyable writing exercises, top tips and advice on getting your work published or self-publishing. The reassuring tone and hands-on approach will help to build the confidence of new writers. The Scribo imprint has two new titles in acclaimed author Tim Collins’ bestselling series The Long-Lost Secret Diary of the World’s Worst… The first is about a Viking boy who gets caught up in disastrous raids and voyages to the New World, the other features twin apprentices who help Gustave Eiffel in the construction of the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. With more than 500 titles to choose from in Salariya’s wide-ranging imprints, we have innovative books which will appeal to both avid and reluctant readers. It explores the weird and wonderful symbiotic relationships between animal species, from sharks and cleaner fish to zebras and birds. The spreads feature clear, bite-sized text and quirky illustrations. Wrasses & large fish

Hmm, cuttlefish fo r l u n c h a g a i n , I see...

Cleaning station Even though fish live in water, they still need a wash and brush up! They don’t need any soap though – just a bunch of cleaners! All they have to do is swim by a cleaning station, get in line, and wait their turn. Little fish soon take charge of them, cleaning parasites from the surface of their body, gills, and oral cavity. About 45 species of fish and many shrimps provide this cleaning service.

We l c o m e ! Th i s i s m y n e w cleaning station.

If there’s any place that the fish’s tiny mouths can’t reach, shrimps come to the rescue. Their long legs and claws provide an excellent tool. Shrimps use them to cut away pieces of protruding skin, or to pick leftover food from teeth.

Wrasses Pavla Hanáčková / Linh Dao

Wrasses run their cleaning stations in coral reefs around the world’s seas and oceans. There’s no shortage of clients as wrasses are indispensable in this regard. They remove not only parasites and bacteria from their customers’ skin, but also damaged or dead skin cells.

Oh, oh, that tickles!

Competitors Competition is stiff, so the cleaners have to know how to best attract customers. Wrasses rely on their striking colouration to instantly catch the attention of potential clients. They also move their body so that the sunlight will reflect on it. Shrimps, meanwhile, wave their claws and sometimes even add showy dance moves!

Shrimps – cleaning specialists

There are long queues, but all the customers wait in an orderly fashion – except for one predator. The Barracuda is attended to as a matter of priority and never has to wait. There are no objections as none of the queue wants to end up as a convenient snack!

Fish pedicure People decided to employ these services, too. Little fish quickly and efficiently remove dead skin from people’s feet.

Advantageous for both sides So, why is this process mutually beneficial? Well, the fish end up amazingly clean, while the cleaners have a welcome feast. Even sharks, rays, cephalopods, and turtles enjoy this good service.

THROUGH THE WALL

T

Jonathan Standing

hrough The Wall is the winner of the 2020 English 4-11 Picture Book Awards (Fiction 7–11 category). This powerful graphic novel tells the story of a giant wall separating two civilisations: one of blue people and one of yellow. Each side is forbidden to speak to the other, because they are sworn enemies. One day, a boy and a girl from opposite sides of the wall meet and decide to break down the boundaries that divide their peoples forever. The debut book from the hugely talented Jonathan Standing, this is a stunningly-illustrated story with an important message about overcoming prejudice and fear of the other. He felt shy and nervous. He didn’t know what to say. But before long the boy and the girl from the other side were chatting to each other like old friends.
