coursework at Jackson Community College. At an early age, Linnea attended ballet classes at Susan Vaughn’s School of Dance. She later became a student and instructor at Lori Ladwig’s Academy of Dance. In 2011, Linnea opened her own studio - Grace School of Dance in downtown Jackson. She and her instructors – Faith Dever, Katrina Meyers and Lindsay Walsh – taught dance with the assistance of long-time friend and associate Janet Coponen. On March 3, 2001, Linnea married her high school sweetheart, Zachary Strauss. They have loved each other “in sickness and in health, ‘til death do us part.” Their final test came in her breast cancer diagnosis in late December, 2012, complicated by a pregnancy. During a long ba le with cancer, Linnea was sustained by the love and prayers of many. In her final days, that included the staff and volunteers at Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice Home of Jackson. To all who entered into her journey in whatever way, her family thanks you. We are grateful for Linnea’s life, for her privilege of sharing the light she received from the Father of all lights. We grieve her loss deeply. If you would honor her memory, please continue to pray for Zach and their children. Linnea has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at Bethel Baptist Church in Jackson on Saturday, Feb. 17. Details will be forthcoming.

(Family Features) Making sure your kids are ready to take on the world as adults is arguably one of the most important roles of a parent. Now, more than ever, education is the foundation of that preparation. As technology continues to evolve, it’s important that kids are learning, and also developing skills in highdemand areas, such as science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). A strong foundation of STEM learning is an important tool for the future, no matter the career path. The experts at the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, are aiming to raise awareness of the benefits for today’s students, and partnering with farmers to award STEM grants that enhance programming at rural public school districts. While nearly everyone has heard about STEM education in one way or another, some people don’t understand its true value in school and in the workplace. It’s cu ing edge. When it comes to innovation, there’s no disputing that STEM is progressing changes
throughout society. STEM fields are at the forefront of nearly all of the exciting modern developments, from the latest digital gadgets enabled by technology to ground-breaking scientific research. Another benefit of this progressive environment is the financial and social impact on the community. Skilled STEM workers are driving trends and innovations, which can create jobs and boost the economy. All of these a ributes appeal to eager, young graduates looking to make their mark. It’s where the jobs are. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics published a report on the 10 fastest-growing occupations through 2026. In the report, 100 percent of the jobs fall into STEM categories, from the No. 1 growth career - solar photovoltaic installers - to a handful of medical field jobs to statisticians, software developers and mathematicians. It’s a chance to make a real difference. STEM fields can drive true social change. Researching and uncovering new treatments, or even the cure, for a debilitating disease is only possible with skills gained through STEM learning. However, science
isn’t the only STEM field that brings opportunities to make a difference in others’ lives. A career in technology could mean helping a child hear or see for the first time using a specially constructed device, for example. It’s a stepping stone to dozens of industries. While STEM learning lends itself well to a fairly large scope of career choices, that list is ever-expanding. In fact, most of today’s graduates find themselves hardpressed to secure a position without some STEM training. Consider a seemingly distant field such as fashion, for example, where digital technologies enable design sketching, mathematic skills factor into creating patterns and some engineering knowledge is necessary for designing a runway show. One school district in Royal, Washington, is utilizing the program to raise academic achievement for students in the classroom and on statemandated math tests. The America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education grant allows teachers to extend learning for students, especially those who are learning English as a second language, who need intervention but lack the technology
at home. It’s helpful in developing additional skills. The specific training involved in STEM education can help lead to certain career paths that will be available in the future. However, it can also help with more general skills. Students typically follow processes in STEM programming and training, such as the scientific method, that give them a chance to work with other students, test hypotheses and find solutions. These challenges can often help in developing teamwork, leadership and other collaborative life skills. Learn more about the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education program at GrowRuralEducation.com. #14057 Source: Monsanto Fund

ANTIQUES by Rick Day “The Clock Doctor” Checking Time.com Matchbooks, like stamps and coins and many other things are of collectible interest. I once bought a matchbook collection at an auction that was in a special binder made for matchbooks. It contains over a hundred matchbooks all from Jackson and the surrounding areas. Most date back to before we got full phone numbers so I’m thinking 1950s. Matchbooks generally are pre y cheap to collect if you are picking them up one at a time, but once you have a few hundred you realize you have a good bit of money into them. There are always exceptions, which I have included here. Pictured at right is a graded matchbook cover with Katharine Hepburn on it and dates to 1934. Now this is a rare piece and like most anything truly rare, this one piece will set you back about $800! Now, granted not everyone is collecting this level of matchbook and as such you can start off by buying a pound of them on eBay for like $12 and have a bunch of fun.

Healthier Baking with Olive Oil (Family Features) Olive oil is a flavorful and versatile cooking oil that is often trusted in popular cooking methods such as sauteing, stir-frying, dressing, marinating and grilling. It can also earn your trust when it comes to baking. With seven olive oil varieties to fit almost any need,
each Filippo Berio olive oil has its own distinct color, aroma and flavor characteristics. Among those seven, the Extra Light Olive Oil offers a delicate aroma and subtle flavor that can complement your favorite baked goods. Its high smoke point helps keep those goodies moist, and with strong flavors like

levels of saturated fat (“bad” fat), making it a more nutritional choice when compared to bu er or margarine. Because you need less olive oil
than bu er in baking, you’ll save calories as well. One easy way to incorporate olive oil in your baked goods is during the prep

HISTORICAL NOTEBOOK by Frank Passic Albion Historian
MAITLAND NAMEPLATE DATES BACK TO ALBION PIONEER DAYS This Tuesday, February 6, at 7:00 pm, yours truly will be giving a presentation entitled, “Albion Numismatics, Part 2” at the Stirling Books & Brew bookstore, 119 N. Superior St. I will continue my talk about Albion numismatic items, focusing on paper money this time. As part of the presentation, Kerry Schaller and Rob Knolle, two metal detectorists, will come and reveal what they found under North Superior St. during “Phase 2” of the brick reconstruction project in October and November. This will be extremely interesting and IINTRO know you will enjoy 5 it. We’ll also $ have a9couple OFFER! of door prizes at the end, so be sure to come. I’ll see you there!

One item found by metal detectorist Kerry Schaller in late 2017 is an oval brass nameplate measuring 1.75” long, and 1.4375” wide. It has four knobs on the back indicating this was attached to something, such as a wooden travel trunk for identification. The name engraved on this nameplate is “I. MAITLAND.” This was found on October 19 on the east side of N. Superior St. in front of the car wash under about two inches of dirt. That name would be IsaTom Coffey’s bella (Galloway) Maitland Soft Water (1819-1881), wife of John M. Maitland (1811-1878). The couple were natives of England and were married there in Manchester on August 1, 1834. They eventually came

to the U.S. to New York, and se led in Albion. The couple had four children: Juliet, Flora, Emily, and John O. If the name Emily Maitland sounds familiar, we wrote about her as the Albion native (Emily Maitland Fish) who operated a lighthouse in California, in the February 20, 2011 edition of this column. The Maitlands operated a general store here in Albion. John is listed as a merchant in the 1850 U.S. Census for Albion. Their store was one of the original five buildings in Albion standing here in 1837 when Juliet Calhoun Blakeley moved to Albion, as she recalled in a 1918 interview celebrating her 100th birthday. She stated, “Maitland’s General Store was generally out of everything anyone wanted.” Where was Maitland’s store? I suspect it was the successor to Philo Taylor’s store, Albion’s first merchant in 1837. It was located in the northeast corner of Superior and Erie streets. Years later the building was moved a blockINTRO away to where the old $ 95 Methodist OFFER! Church use to sit on E. Erie. Anyway, Philo sold his store to Isaac Johnson in the late 1830s, but he

daughter Flora and husband Charles Thielke had moved to Florence and were living there. Probably Isabella went to live with her daughter after her husband John passed away a few years earlier. From our Historical Notebook this week we present a photograph of that nameplate, courtesy of Kerry Schaller whom we thank for Tom Coffey’s finding this special pioneer Soft Water Albion item. Come this Tuesday evening when it will be on display. Special thanks also to Kathryn Keller for her genealogical research about the Maitland’s.

condolences to the family of their long-time and active member. Later that same year the couple’s only son, John Oliver Maitland, passed away on December 2, and is also interred in St. Joseph. died in 1840. Jesse Crowell then came in with other partners and the store continued in existence until January, 1853. I surmise that it was the Maitland’s who partnered with Crowell and operated the store. When Mrs. Blakeley came in 1837 it would still have been Philo Taylor’s store. In 1855 however, the Maitland’s are mentioned as living in Chicago, Illinois as they appear in the Illinois 1855 Census. So, they operated their general store in Albion for about 13 years. The Maitland’s also appear in the U.S. Census of 1860 in Chicago. They became quite well-to- do. In his will, John states that he was a produce merchant who owned $31,000 worth of real estate, and had $100,000 in his personal estate. John died of a sun stroke in St. Joseph, Michigan on July 22, 1878 and was interred in Saint Joseph City Cemetery. At the time of his death, the Maitland’s son John Oliver, Tom Coffey’s daughter Flora and her husSoft Water band Charles Thielke were also living with the couple in Chicago, as well as two live-in servants. Bear
OK. Who wants a puppy? This guy is full of puppy energy--and full of love to give to his very own family. Buddy is 5 months old. He’s a Pit Bull mix, already neutered, brought up-to-date on shots and is mi-
crochipped. He loves to play and has a heart of gold. Being a puppy he still needs lots of training, but he just loves people. Stop in the Cascades Humane Society and visit with Buddy. See if he’s a good fit for
your family. Bear is a 2 1/2 year old solid black male cat. Bear is a very friendly cat that gets along with other cats and with kids. It can take him a li le bit of time to warm up, but once he does he loves to give you a ention and get the same in return. Bear has never been around dogs. He is neutered, li er box trained and he is front declawed. Bear is current on all of his vaccines. Stop in at Pet Supply Plus to visit with Bear. Drop in at the Cascades Humane Society anytime Tuesday through Saturday, noon-to-6 p.m. to meet Buddy and Bear. Cascades Humane Society is located at 1515 Carmen Drive in Jackson. 517-787-7387.

Buddy Bear officially begins Income tax filing season LANSING, Mich. – Michigan’s individual income tax filing season officially begins today, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury. Michiganders can start filing their 2017 tax year state individual income tax returns online or through the U.S. Postal Service. All individual income tax returns must be e-filed or postmarked by Tuesday, April 17, 2018. “The easiest and quickest way for Michigan taxpayers to get their refund is to file electronically,” said Deputy State Treasurer Glenn White, head of Treasury’s Tax Administration Group. “This helps ensure tax returns are accurate and improves tax refund turnaround times.” Choosing electronic filing and direct deposit is convenient, safe and secure. Last year, more than 4.1 million Michigan taxpayers e-filed, which is nearly 83 percent of state income tax filers. After Feb. 5, limited quantities of printed tax forms will be available at public libraries, northern Michigan post offices, Michigan Department of Health and Hu-
man Services county offices and Treasury Field Offices. For the benefit and convenience of taxpayers, both the beginning and end of the individual income tax filing season are the same as the Internal Revenue Service. In an effort to protect Michigan taxpayers, the state Treasury Department continues to implement security measures to stop tax-related identity theft. As a result, some individual income tax returns may be selected for identity confirmation. If an individual income tax return has been selected for identity confirmation, the taxpayer will receive a le er from Treasury asking them to confirm their identity by completing a short online quiz or submi ing paperwork. A phone option is available for those with functional needs or are not computer savvy. After a taxpayer confirms his or her identity, their tax refund will be issued in about a month. “Don’t wait to file your tax return,” White said. “By filing early, taxpayers can prevent cybercriminals from stealing their refunds.”
A QUALITY CONTRACTOR
Taxpayers who have been recent victims of identity theft are asked to report their circumstances to the state Treasury Department. Reporting identity theft helps thwart cybercriminals who a empt to file returns and steal state tax refunds. In 2017, increased security measures protected more than 4,000 taxpayers who confirmed their identity was stolen and used to request state of Michigan refunds. This prevented more than $16 million from being distributed to scammers. To learn more about identity theft, go to www.michigangov/identitytheft. Seniors and individuals with functional needs may qualify for free tax preparation help from IRS-trained volunteers or Tax Counseling for the Elderly preparers. For information about free tax help, go to www.michiganfreetaxhelp.org or dial 2-1-1. To learn more about Michigan’s individual income tax or to download forms, go to www.michigan.gov/incometax. For more information about e-filing, go to www. mifastfile.org.
