On April 22, the Jackson County Intermediate School District’s Math and Science Center will host a presentation of Official Michigan Green School flags and pins to 26 local schools. Each school earned the distinction through the completion of environmentally-friendly activities. The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. at the Kra Education Center, located at 6700 Browns Lake Rd. This year, eight Jackson County schools have reached Green School status, seven have earned Emerald status, and 11 earned the highest-level Evergreen Award. “We are so excited to see this many schools in our county commied to supporting environmental health,” said Kristie Morris, director of the Math and Science Center at the JCISD. “To see 11 of our schools reach Evergreen status is incredible.” Consumers Energy, sponsor of the event, will make the presentations of the flags and pins, along with a certificate and an Eastern Redbud tree, to school officials.

Changes we make at home can make a huge difference. If every home in the United States replaced existing showerheads with WaterSense labeled models, we could conserve more than 260 billion gallons of water and save nearly $5.1 billion in water and energy costs across the country annually

Rachel Kurtz Experience to come to Jackson area

The Rachel Kurtz Experience is coming to the Jackson area. Rachel Kurtz is a Minnesota-based singer/songwriter with a distinctive voice and amazing stories and testimonies to tell. Her subtle blend of folk pop, with a healthy dose of soul, washes over and through the listener. Audiences across the country resonate with Rachel’s music. She has performed at several ELCA Youth Gatherings and has traveled to Africa and India with her music ministry. Kurtz, hosted by Christ Lutheran Church, will perform a family concert Saturday, April 26, at 7 p.m. at Michigan Center High School auditorium,

400 S. State St. The proceeds of a free will offering will go to the Michigan Center Food Pantry. For more information, visit www.clcmc.org/events.

A Car & Tractor Show is set to take place from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 at Tractor Supply Company, 1448 N. Eaton St., in Albion. In addition to a free car and

points allowing citizens a safe and confidential way to dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs,” said Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP. “The Michigan State Police is pleased to yet again partner with the DEA to prevent pill abuse and the by helping residents rid their homes of potentially dangerous pre-

scription drugs.” This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
