Landowners can support local hunting traditions and economy, improve their land, and get paid to do it by enrolling their lands in the Hunting Access Program. Landowners with at least 40 acres are eligible to enroll. HAP was created in 1977 to increase public hunting opportunities in southern Michigan where 97 percent of the land base is privately owned. Landowners enrolled in HAP receive an annual payment, up to $25 an acre, for allowing hunters to access their lands. Using funds from the new hunting license package and a new United States Department of Agriculture grant, the DNR plans to continue ex-

panding the program over the next three years. According to DNR Wildlife Biologist, Mike Parker, “Providing access to hunting lands that are close to home is critical for supporting Michigan’s strong hunting heritage. Our commitment to providing access has more than tripled the number of farms enrolled in HAP the past three years. We now have over 140 farms and nearly 16,000 acres available for public hunting. Parker continued, “HAP is also good for the economy. Hunters taking trips to HAP lands contribute 1.7 million dollars annually to Michigan’s economy. The majority of the HAP hunter trips are only 25

miles from the hunter’s home, making HAP lands extremely accessible and close to home.” Landowners have the ability to choose which types of hunting are allowed on their lands. Hunting options include: - All Hunting - Youth & Apprentice Hunting Only - Small Game Only - Deer Only - Sharptail Grouse Only Maximum payments will be given for All Hunting or Youth & Apprentice Hunting options. In order to control the number of hunters using HAP lands at any one time, hunters are required to register to hunt each time they visit the property. The landowner can select

either a mandatory registration at their home or a hunter self-registration box, which the DNR will provide and install. The maximum number of hunters allowed on the property is determined by the total acreage, as well as the habitat type. Leases are on a two year period, with annual payments made each spring. Visit www.michigan.gov/ hap to learn more about the program and to see a current list of private lands available for hunting in Michigan. For more information about enrolling your property contact Kandice Karll of the Jackson County Conservation District, 517-784-2800 ext. 208, Kandice. karll@macd.org.

The Center for Family Health was recently named by a national institute as an approved site for its innovative approach to delivering prenatal care. The designation makes Jackson one of three approved sites in Michigan for the Centering/ Pregnancy model developed by the Centering Healthcare Institute in Boston. “It means we meet all the essential elements that are critical for making this model successful,” said Sara Benedeo, vice president and COO of the CFH. “We are already seeing positive outcomes and look forward to growing the model to reach more pregnant women.” Centering/Pregnancy delivers medical care to pregnant women in groups of eight to 12 instead of traditional visits to a doctor’s office. The group approach produces beer care, beer results, and lower costs. “The outcomes are amazing,” said Molly Kaser, president and CEO of the CFH. “It’s really changing the way we

provide care, which is no easy task.” Centering/Pregnancy was launched at the CFH two years ago, and the first babies whose mothers participated were born in December. Women at the same stage of pregnancy meet for two-hour sessions scheduled along the normal course of prenatal medical check-ups. Fathers and other caregivers are also encouraged to aend. Expectant mothers receive medical examinations at the group sessions, as well as educational information on subjects such as nutrition. Compared to traditional doctor visits, pregnant women in Centering/Pregnancy groups have more face-to-face time with medical providers and they meet other women who share similar experiences and concerns. “A lot of these women become support for each other,” Kaser said. Evidence shows group care promotes greater selfconfidence and beer self-help

skills for expectant moms, which leads to beer medical outcomes and fewer birth complications. Site approval is recognition by the Centering Healthcare Institute that the CFH meets standards and 13 essential elements of Centering/Pregnancy. Representatives of the Institute visited Jackson to observe the program and examine data. The CFH joins programs in Flint and Muskegon as the only approved sites in Michigan. This month, the CFH also launched Centering/Parenting, a similar group-based approach to pediatric care for infants. It is the first and only Centering/Parenting site in Michigan. The CFH is an independent, Federally Qualified Health Center that never turns patients away because of inability to pay. It provides quality primary health care and behavioral health services to more than 27,000 patients at its main location in Jackson, four school health centers, and a satellite clinic at LifeWays.

Miss Jackson Crossroads 2015, Emily Sioma and Miss Jackson Crossroads Outstanding Teen 2015, Alaina Cook both finished in the top five at the Miss Michigan and Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageant held in Muskegon June 15-20. Both were awarded scholarships as part of the Miss America Organization. Tuesday evening, Cook, a Lumen Christi sophomore, won the Preliminary Talent Award and a $200 cash scholarship for her lyrical dance and acrobatic routine to “Warrior.” During the finals on Wednesday evening, she was announced into the Top Ten from a field of 26 contestants. Later that evening, the Top Ten was narrowed to a Top Five and Cook was announced as the Third Runner-Up earning an additional

$300.00 cash scholarship. This was her first aempt at a state competition after winning the local title of Miss Jackson Crossroads Outstanding Teen in January of this year. Her personal platform is “Empowering Youth Through Physical Fitness.” Friday evening Sioma, a graduate of Grass Lake High School and a senior at The University of Michigan, won the Kirsten Haglund Swimsuit Award during Friday evening’s preliminary competition, earning a $250.00 educational scholarship. Saturday night, she was announced into the top eleven among a field of 34 contestants from across Michigan. The eleven was narrowed to five and Sioma claimed Second Runner-Up and an additional $4,000.00 in educational scholarships. This was her first aempt at

a state competition after winning the title of Miss Jackson Crossroads in January of this year. Her personal platform is “Organ Donation: Let Your Legacy Live On.” “We are so proud of our titleholders and their representation of Jackson County at the Miss Michigan and Outstanding Teen Pageant” said Lisa Schweizer, president of the Miss Jackson Crossroads and Outstanding Teen Board of Directors. “It is exciting to have both our Miss and Teen in the Top Five, especially as first time contestants. They were prepared and determined to do their best.” Established in 2013, the Miss Jackson Crossroads and Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageant is the local pathway to Miss America as an official affiliate of the Miss America Organization.
