July is National Vehicle The Protection Month During National Vehicle The Protection Month, the Michigan Automobile The Prevention Authority (ATPA) is seeking to educate the public and raise awareness on auto the and carjackings. “July and August are the top months of the year for vehicle the in Michigan and throughout the country,” said Mr. Dan Vartanian, executive director of ATPA. “Motorists can avoid becoming victims by taking some simple precautions.” The ATPA suggests the following tips: • Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. • Keep your keys with you at all times. Never leave your keys in or on your vehicle. • Close and lock all windows and doors when you park your vehicle. • Always park in well-lit areas or in a garage, if possible. • Never leave valuables in

your vehicle, especially in view. Additional information on how to prevent becoming a victim can be found by visiting the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Diplomatic Security at hp://www.state.gov/m/ds/rls/ rpt/19782.htm. Since the inception of the ATPA in 1986, auto thes in Michigan have decreased by over 65 percent. The authority is governed by a seven-member board of

directors appointed by the Governor, which includes representatives of law enforcement, automobile insurers and consumers of automobile insurance. Each year the board awards grants to law enforcement agencies, prosecutors’ offices and nonprofit community organizations to prevent auto the, catch auto thieves and put the thieves in jail. For mpore information, visit www. michigan.gov/atpa.

The west Michigan-based gospel/bluegrass band Calabogie Road will appear Friday, Aug. 1, as part of the free evening concert series at Walker Tavern Historic Site near Brooklyn. The concert starts at 6 p.m., weather permiing. “Band members have been playing for more than 30 years, and we are delighted to include their lively humor and great music in our summer evening concert series,” said Walker Tavern site historian Laurie Perkins. Guests are encouraged to

bring a picnic, a lawn chair and a friend, and enjoy some toe-tapping music. The performance is the second in a series of three concerts. The final concert is set for Thursday, Aug. 28, featuring the Old Tyme Millers String Band, a local gospel/bluegrass group. A Recreation Passport is now required for entry to Cambridge Junction Historic State Park, the home of Walker Tavern. For more information on the Recreation Passport, go to www.michigan.gov/recreationpassport.

The Department of Natural Resources reminds the public that importing certain baitfish species is prohibited. The DNR has recently received numerous questions regarding the importation of baitfish into Michigan and points these inquiries to the Susceptible Fish Species list in Fish Disease Control Order 245. The release – both intentional and unintentional – of live baitfish is one of the best ways to spread fish diseases. To protect Michigan’s world-class fisheries, imported baitfish should be inspected and certified that they are free of diseases, such as viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus.

Popular baitfish species on the Susceptible Fish Species list include, but are not limited to: bluntnose minnow, emerald shiner, Pacific herring, spoail shiner and white sucker. It is unlawful to bring any of these species into Michigan unless they have been approved by the DNR for importation, which requires being certified by approved laboratories as disease-free. This includes bringing baitfish into Michigan for commercial, recreation or personal use. For more information, review Fish Order 245 at www. michigan.gov/documents/dnr/ FO_245.10_317517_7.pdf.
