Oaklawn events to focus on prevention of type 2 diabetes Two area events in November will be of interest to those with diabetes and their families and friends, according to Timira Perry, Oaklawn’s diabetes education coordinator. A presentation about specific types of foods that can help prevent type 2 diabetes will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at Homer United Methodist Church, 101 E. Adams St., Homer. That presentation will be offered by Perry, who is a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator since 2003 and coordinator of Oaklawn’s program, and Mary Jo Lakatos, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at Oaklawn Hospital. Their talk will focus on cer-
tain key recommended plants, Perry said. “We call them ‘The Three Sisters,’” she said. “They’re some main agricultural crops of Native American groups, specifically winter squash, maize – which most people call corn – and climbing beans. They’re three inseparable plants that grow and thrive together.” The same topic will be discussed at a gathering of the Marshall Diabetes Support Group, to be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in Oaklawn Hospital’s main lobby at 200 N. Madison St., Marshall. Both events are open to the public without charge, and it is not necessary to be a member of the support group to aend.
For additional information about the November events, contact Perry at (269) 789-8972 or tperry@oaklawnhospital. com. “I’ve seen how diabetes education provided through our program has helped improve the lives of people dealing with this disease,” said Perry, who described diabetes as “a growing epidemic.” Diabetes affects 30 million Americans, she said. Since the program began in 2010, about 1,650 people – most of them adults – have been helped through Oaklawn’s program, Perry estimated. The program grew out of a series of instructional classes offered by the hospital since 1999, she added.
Enrollment for 2016 health insurance subsidized through the Affordable Care Act begins Nov. 1, and the Center for Family Health is ready to help families and individuals sign up. For the third year since the federal government’s Health Insurance Marketplace began, expert navigators at the Center for Family Health will offer assistance throughout the three-month sign-up period. Navigators can answer questions about insurance choices and tax credits, and they can work side-by-side with enrollees through each step. It’s free help available by appointment to everyone who needs health insurance,
regardless of whether they are Center for Family Health patients. To make an appointment, call 517-748-5500 and ask for Marketplace enrollment. Open enrollment begins Nov. 1 and lasts until Jan. 31. Enrollment must be completed by Dec. 15 for health coverage beginning on Jan. 1. Americans without health insurance in 2016 will face tax penalties of at least $695 for each adult and $347.50 for children, up to a maximum $2,085 for a family. Health insurance purchased through the Marketplace can be affordable even for households with limited income, because tax credits can pay most of the cost of
monthly premiums. The tax credit amount can vary depending on income, family size, and insurance coverage purchased. The Center for Family Health advises everyone without health insurance to go online at healthcare.gov and use the government’s eligibility tool for an estimate of eligibility and costs. People already covered through the Affordable Care Act, also called Obamacare, are advised to go online to check for changes in price and coverage options for 2016. For expert help, call 517748-5500 for an appointment at the Center for Family Health, located at 505 N. Jackson St., in Jackson.

a second single deer license or the deer combo license. - Deer combo license, which includes two kill tags, one regular and one restricted. Hunters who want two deer licenses must buy the deer combo license instead of the single deer license. The deer combo license is valid for use during the archery, firearm and muzzleloader seasons. A hunter can use both kill tags in the firearm seasons, both in the archery season or one in each season. - Antlerless deer license, available based on license quo-
tas set for each Deer Management Unit (DMU). To see how the single deer and deer combo licenses may be used in each deer season, based on which DMU a hunter wishes to hunt, see the 2015 Hunting and Trapping Digest. A base license now is required for all hunters. The base license provides critical funding for habitat and conservation work on both public and private land and supports the work of conservation officers and field staff to ensure safe, legal hunting practices are fol-
lowed. The purchase of a base license includes small game hunting. More information about Michigan’s hunting license structure – including license prices, frequently asked questions and details about how license dollars will be invested – is available at www.michigan. gov/dnr under “In the Know.” For more details about hunting seasons, licenses and regulations, see the Hunting and Trapping Digest and Antlerless Deer Digest at www.mi.gov/ dnrdigests.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters, and everyone else outside enjoying the fall weather, to be cautious while lighting campfires and using woodstoves this season. A warm beginning to autumn has increased the chances of a wildfire. In fact, the DNR recently responded to several fires, both in the Upper and Lower peninsulas; the largest of those was a 17-acre fire in Sanilac County.
Dan Laux, DNR fire prevention specialist, said remembering the basics of fire safety will help ensure that this hunting season isn’t ruined by a wildfire. “Our main concerns have to do with falling leaves and dry grass, combined with embers from woodstoves and campfires,” Laux said. “The beginning of the hunting season has been a bit warmer and dryer this year, so that causes a lile concern. If folks take
a few extra minutes to keep fire safety in mind, it’ll help ensure that the only blaze in this woods this hunting season will be the blaze orange on our hunters.” The DNR recommends following a few general precautions to ensure fire safety: - Never leave a campfire or woodstove unaended. - Clear the area of leaves and dry fuel before lighting a campfire. - Don’t park a vehicle in dry
grass. - If a campfire gets out of control, call 911 immediately. - Avoid outdoor burning when it is windy to prevent escape and spread of a fire. So far this year, the DNR has responded to a total of 341 wildfires, which have burned 2,920 acres. To learn more about the DNR’s firefighting efforts, and how to prevent wildfires, visit www.michigan.gov/preventwildfires.

Applications available for MHSAA 2015-16 Scholar-Athlete Awards One of the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s most popular programs, the Scholar-Athlete Award, will again present 32 $1,000 scholarships to top student-athletes at member high schools during the 2015-16 school year. The MHSAA-Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award highlights the value extracurricular activities play in the total education of high school students, often improving their academic achievements in the process. The
Scholar-Athlete Award is in its 27th year. Since the award’s inception in 1988-89, Farm Bureau Insurance has presented more than $670,000 in scholarships through this program. The first 30 scholarships will be presented on a graduated basis across the MHSAA’s traditional class structure. From Class A schools, six boys and six girls will receive scholarships; from Class B schools, four boys and four girls; from Class C schools, three boys and three girls; and from Class D
schools, two boys and two girls will be honored. The final two scholarships will be awarded at-large to minority recipients, regardless of school size. The scholarships may be used at the institution of higher learning the recipients aend during the first year at those colleges. Applications from individual schools will be limited to the number of available scholarships in their enrollment class. Students applying for Scholar-Athlete Awards must
be graduating during the 201516 school year, be carrying an unrounded 3.5 (on a 4.0) gradepoint average and have won a varsity leer prior to senior year in a sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament. Applicants will be required to show involvement in other school and community activities and submit an essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics. Applications are available only in digital format. The
Comfort Foods Get a Boost with Superfruit
downloadable forms on the MHSAA Website need only be saved to a computer, filled out in nearly any word processing program – in Windows or Macintosh platforms – and then printed to be aached to the required essay and leers of recommendation. Students must submit their applications to their school athletic director, principal or guidance counselor by Dec. 4, 2015. Schools have additional materials to submit with student applications, and each school must submit all of
its applications at one time. Individually mailed applications to the MHSAA office will not be accepted. The application materials are available online on the Scholar-Athlete Award page of the MHSAA Website at hp:// www.mhsaa.com/schools/ students/scholarathleteaward. aspx. A commiee composed of school administrators from across the state will select finalists and winners in early February.

Research has found that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables may provide protection against cardiovascular disease, several cancers and other chronic diseases. Several of the micronutrients associated with diets high in fruit and vegetables, such as vitamin C, have also been shown to support immune function. Mangos, which are bursting with antioxidants and more than 20 different vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and vitamin B6, can help support immune function as part of a healthy diet. A diet poor in nutrients can reduce immunity and your body’s ability to fight off illness, mixing up some of those go-to comfort foods when you’re not feeling well and replacing them with healthier options can be both comforting and nutritious. Since mangos are a superfruit, try switching out that bowl of chicken noodle
soup for a bowl of Gingered Mango Soup, or soothe that sore throat with a Tropical Mango Sorbet instead of that big scoop of ice cream. Find more healthful comfort food recipes and other ways to help boost your immunity at Mango.org. Few Americans know warning signs of a stroke
Song can help people recall symptoms and act quickly if one occurs, experts say (HealthDay News) -- One in three people can’t list any warning signs of stroke, research from the American Stroke Association shows. However, the association added that puing common stroke symptoms into the lyrics of a song could help more people recognize when someone is having a stroke. And that could save lives. In honor of World Stroke Day on Oct. 29, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association urges people to learn the “F.A.S.T. Song,” to help remember how
to spot common signs of a brain aack and what to do if one occurs. If someone has a stroke near you, the F.A.S.T. song tells you what to do. - The leer F stands for face, if one half droops, no time to waste. - The leer A means an arm that’s weak. - The leer S means it’s hard to speak. - The leer T means it’s time to dial 9-1-1. Call right away so help will come. Learn the song to show you care, and help end stroke each
time you share. “Most of us can recall using song to memorize something in history class like U.S. states in alphabetical order or the Preamble to the Constitution. It’s fun and it really works. The same principle works for learning stroke signs,” said Dr. Rani Whitfield, an American Stroke Association volunteer. Stroke is the world’s second-leading cause of death and the number one cause of long-term disability. Strokes require immediate medical attention. The sooner a stroke is identified and treated, the bet-
ter, the association says. “Recognizing a stroke right away and calling 9-1-1 is the key when it comes to stroke,” Dr. Jeffrey Saver, director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in a news release from the American Stroke Association. “We have many effective therapies to treat stroke, but there is a short window for the patient to be evaluated at a hospital and receive treatment like a clot-busting drug or clot-removal device,” Saver stressed.
