Springport football has season close; penalties the main culprit Aer slow, slow start, Homer football team rolls to 28-0 victory in playoff opener By MIKE MOORE Staff Writer
Lawton – Facing a team this good, self-inflicted wounds would have to be limited. Nine penalties and a couple turnovers surely wouldn’t cut it. And last weekend for the Springport High School football team, well, it didn’t. “We came out and were able to move the ball really well,” coach Ma Schwartzkopf said. “I think the main thing, that doesn’t show in the stats, is we had nine penalties. You can’t do that. I think that cost us this one.” Schwartzkopf spoke a day aer Springport was ousted from the Division 7 playoffs in a 21-6 setback to Lawton. It was a lile bit of everything,” he said of the nine fouls. “False starts. Holding. Guys lining up offside. I mean, it’s stuff that kind of hurt us this season. It hurt us again in this one.” When Logan Browning scored on a 14-yard run late in the first quarter, Springport trailed just 7-6. The score held strong into the third when Lawton (9-1) went up 14-6, and then put the game away with another score in the fourth. “They basically were just able to move the ball a lile bit, had some good field position thanks to their punter,” Schwartzkopf said. “And we never really had that big play.” Browning was the main source of offense in the game, rushing for 138 yards on 19 carries. Casey Stowell added 84 yards on 14 carries. Brandon Tanner led the defense with six tackles. Springport ends the season 6-4 and will have to look to next year to try and earn the program its first playoff victory. “I’ve used this phrase a few times, but I think this was a roller-coaster season,” Schwartzkopf said. “We started out with some high hopes, and some of those we missed out on.
By MIKE MOORE Staff Writer Logan Browning tries to break free Kyle Frizzell runs the ball from Lawton defense Photos by Kathryn Palon I think the injuries really set us back, but the guys had to adjust, and they moved into new positions and made the most of it.” “To play the teams we did, and take some bad losses down the stretch, but still come out and play a good Lawton team the way we did says a lot about these guys,” Schwartzkopf added. “I think we had some downs this year, but the guys baled back, and I think this is a team that ended on a solid note.” As for next season, Schwartzkopf said it will be a work in progress “It’s tough to gauge just what we will be,” he said. “This will be the first time in a while we won’t have a starting quarterback with a ton of experience. We’re losing some good guys on defense, but will return the core of the group. I think it will take some work, but the future looks prey bright here. That’s how I see it now. Check back in August and we’ll have a beer feel for it.”

Homer – Three turnovers and 89 total yards of offense. That, literally, summed up the first half of last weekend’s playoff opener for the Homer High School football team. The third quarter was a different story, and because of it, the Trojans are moving on. Aer an anemic start to the Division 7 opener against Reading, Homer exploded for 28 points in the third quarter and rolled to a 28-0 victory. Alex White scored twice in the third and also tossed a touchdown pass. Chaz Hopkins scored once and Brock Ridgeway hauled in the pass to pile on the 28 points, pushing Homer to the second round for the first time since 2005. White completed 9-of-20 passes for 144 yards and the touchdown. He completed passes to six different receivers. Hopkins led the rushing aack with 174 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown. White also rushed for 47 yards on 10 carries and one score. Homer, 9-1, faced Lawton High (91) Friday night for the district title. Lawton beat Springport 21-6 in its opener.

In the D-4 boys race, Concord’s bid for a third title in a row came up short as the Jackets ďŹ nished third with a score of 134. Jesse Hersha claimed the top spot in the race, ďŹ nishing in 15:49.2. He was ďŹ rst out of 243 runners, claiming his second state title. Jacob Hall was ďŹ ďż˝h overall, ďŹ nishing in 16:51.8, while Josiah

Michigan conservation oďŹƒcers oer top 10 tips for a safe hunting experience
With Michigan’s rich tradition of fall hunting geďż˝ing under way, conservation oďŹƒcers at the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) have offered their top 10 tips for a safe outdoor experience. “Hunting in Michigan is a time-honored activity, rich in tradition, when families and friends come together to enjoy our great outdoors,â€? said Lt. Andrew Turner, who leads the DNR’s Recreation, Safety and Enforcement Section for the Law Enforcement Division. “Making your hunt a safe and responsible experience is key to having an enjoyable and memorable time. By following these safety tips, hunters can help us all have a good season.â€? Turner said the top 10 safety tips for hunters to remember are: • Treat every ďŹ rearm as if it is loaded. • Always point the muzzle in a safe direction. • Be certain of your target, and what’s beyond it, before ďŹ ring. Know the identifying features of the game you hunt. Make sure you have an adequate backstop; don’t shoot at a at, hard surface or water. • Keep your ďŹ nger outside the trigger guard and o the trigger until ready to shoot. • Don’t run, jump or climb with a loaded ďŹ rearm. Unload a ďŹ rearm before you climb a fence or tree, or jump a ditch. Pull a ďŹ rearm toward you by the buďż˝, not the muzzle. • Avoid alcoholic beverages before or during hunting. Also avoid mind- or behavior-altering medicines or drugs. • All ďŹ rearm deer hunters on any land during daylight hunting hours must wear a hat, cap, vest, jacket, rainwear or other outer garment of “hunter orangeâ€? visible from all sides. All hunters, including archers, must comply during gun season. • Camouage hunter orange is legal, provided 50 percent of the surface area is solid hunter orange. (Exceptions: waterfowl, crow and wild turkey hunters, and bow hunters for deer during bow season). • Always let someone know where you are hunting and when you plan on returning. This information helps conservation oďŹƒcers and others locate you if you get lost.
• Carry your cellphone into the woods. Remember to turn your ringer o or set your phone to vibrate rather than ring. Your cellphone emits a signal that can help rescuers locate you when you are lost.
If you have a smartphone, go to the seďż˝ings and enable your GPS to help searchers ďŹ nd you if you get lost. Make sure before you leave for the woods each day that your phone is fully charged. If you have a smartphone, download a compass and ashlight app – there are many versions of these apps that are free to download in the iPhone App Store or on Google Play for Android. “These simple, common sense tips can prevent hunting accidents and save lives,â€? said Turner. “We encourage all sportsmen and women to follow these guidelines when enjoying the great outdoors in our state.â€? Michigan’s regular deer ďŹ rearm season starts Nov. 15. For more information about hunting in Michigan, visit the DNR website www.michigan.gov/hunting.

shutdown many numbers were thrown around. But there is one number that stands out and it has nothing to do with the debate over the federal budget. More than one a day. That is how many members of our activeduty military, National Guard and Reserve forces have commied suicide over the last year. Simply put, we are losing more service members by their own hands than we are by the enemy in Afghanistan. Only those who experienced firsthand the horrors of combat can understand why most of these young men and women feel compelled to take such drastic and permanent measures. As Veterans Day ceremonies and parades occur throughout the country, it is important that we

commit ourselves to do everything possible to prevent these needless and tragic deaths. We are their friends, their family, their co-workers and their neighbors. It is up to us to ensure that every veteran feels that his or her service to this country is appreciated by their fellow Americans. There are many tangible ways that we can acknowledge their sacrifice, but the easiest is to simply say, “Thank you for what you have done for our country.” If he is showing signs of unhappiness or depression, encourage him to seek help through the VA immediately. If she has had difficulty obtaining the benefits that she is entitled to, let her know that The American Legion has thousands of trained service officers nationwide that will help her
navigate the bureaucracy free of charge. And if that veteran has made the Supreme Sacrifice, remember the price that has been paid for our freedom and offer your support to the loved ones le behind. But Veterans Day is a time to honor not just those who have fought for us in bale, but, in fact, all of the outstanding men and women who served in our nation’s Armed Forces since our founding more than 237 years ago. Not all veterans have seen war, but a common bond that they share is an oath in which they expressed their willingness to die defending this nation. Perhaps most significant in preserving our way of life are the bales that America does not have to fight because those who wish

their lives in the War on Terrorism. The American Legion recently issued a report calling upon VA to improve its response to the unique needs of women veterans. The VA and military health systems need to adequately treat breast and cervical cancer as well as trauma that resulted from domestic violence, sexual harassment and assault. America is home to more than 1.2 million women veterans and they deserve our support. In the poem “Tommy,” the great writer Rudyard Kipling lamented over the rude treatment a British soldier received at a pub. Writing in classical old English, Kipling compared the abuse with the more favorable treatment that “Tommy” receives by the public during war. “For it’s Tommy this, an ‘ Tommy that, an’ ‘Chuck him out, the brute!’ But it’s ‘Savior of ‘is country’ when the guns begin to shoot; An’ it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ anything you please; An’ Tommy ain’t a bloomin’ fool – you bet that Tommy sees!”
us harm slink away in fear of the Navy aircra carrier, the Coast Guard cuer, the Air Force fighter squadron or the Army soldier on patrol. Or they have heard the words that recently retired General James Mais shared with his Marines: “Be polite. Be professional. But have a plan to kill everybody you meet.” While we should all be grateful for the remarkable advancements made in military medicine and prosthetics, the fighting spirit and inspirational stories of our veterans are not due to technology. These traits come from the heart. And many of these veterans are women, such as Army Chief Warrant Officer Lori Hill. While piloting her helicopter over Iraq in 2006, she maneuvered her chopper to draw enemy gunfire away from another helicopter and provide suppressive fire for troops on the ground. Despite flying a damaged aircra and suffering injuries, she landed the helicopter safely, saving her crew. For her actions, she became the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross. Women are major contributors to our military presence in Afghanistan and many have given
