was how it all began, one man, and one woman, obedient to a call, providing spiritual support to the homeless. They play riveting music and offer encouragement and prayer support everywhere they go. Many homeless shelters are founded on Christian principles. They make a huge difference breaking the cycle of poverty, but there are still many needs left unmet due to the sheer gravity of the homeless situation. This is where Facing Goliath shines, because Dave and Amber Paulsen help daily on the streets to meet those unseen emotional and spiritual needs. Music, prayer, and being real friends who visit regularly are the main staples of this unique ministry. They even hand out bibles, CDs, and other resources to leave a lasting impact.

How did Facing Goliath begin?
I was playing music and just sharing the songs God had given, and trying to bless people. As I was working, I would walk by in the freezing cold and see someone sleeping in a bus stop, and I wondered how he could survive there. God wants those people to know how He loves them. He desires to have a relationship with them. I was 24 when I first came to know Christ, and even since the 1990’s I felt a strong calling to help the hopeless and homeless. I was so amazed by His love that I wanted to give away that love to the next person I came across on the streets. On Valentines Day 2007, Amber and Dave played music at a homeless shelter for the first time, and they have never been the same since. On that fateful Valentines day, as Dave sang, the strongest and most masculine man at the shelter began to weep, his large tears forming a small puddle on the floor. He was led to show his vulnerability by the depth of Dave’s anointed music.
What is the story behind the name?
The name reminds you that there is still hope in the Lord, that God still conquers giants like he did through a small shepherd boy called David. What are the needs met by Facing Goliath?
Spiritual needs are what we focus on. Christ said, “Man does not live by bread alone, but by the very word of God.” He also wants people to be fed, clothed, and sheltered, and so we partner with shelters. I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing what we do if their need for food, shelter, and other physical needs weren’t being met. But, as shelters do that, they also need to be shown that they have value and that they are loved, not by what any man says but by the Lord. Through our testimonies and through the stories we share in the bible, we share that no problem is too great, no giant is too big for the Lord to overcome, and that they can overcome them with the Lord.
This music has realism, with stories that touch even the hardest of hearts.

give thanks;
for this is God’s will for you in Chris Jesus What is a typical week like with your ministry?
A typical week with Facing Goliath involves visiting homeless shelters and making a difference on the streets. The ministry includes myself and Amber, volunteers, musicians, a prayer team, and financial supporters. Three days a week, we visit various shelters and ministries in Omaha and Lincoln, according to a regular schedule. Some of the places we visit are: Sienna Francis House Open Door Mission Starfish Ministries Lydia House Mohm’s Place Concerts at The Hub Lincoln People's City Mission Last Sunday Dinner (at 14th and Farnam) InCommon Community Development Commontable
A message is also presented with the music. The remainder of the week is spent raising funds. We update our website and facebook, as well as email newsletters to share how we are reaching the homeless and being Jesus’ hands and feet.

What are your favorite bible verses? ig
hl i 2 Timothy 2:20-22 (NLT): “In a wealthy home, some ght utensils are made of gold and silver, and some are made of wood and clay. The expensive utensils are used for special occasions, and the cheap ones are for everyday use. If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NASB) : "In everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." I use it when I do not feel thankful. The Lord is changing my heart more and more to be thankful in all things, even things I wouldn't normally feel thankful for in my own strength. What do I really need to know?
I fell away quickly from the Lord after I came to Him the first time because I thought it would be easier to not be a Christian and live in the world. My advice is to remember that we don’t live in the world anymore but live for a greater kingdom. We should be living for eternal rewards, not for this world. I wish I would have known the power of God’s word, prayer, having a strong community of believers around you, and going to church weekly. Stay faithful to the Lord as He leads us down a long journey, because He is faithful and never gives up on us. Remain faithful, and through our obedience, it opens the door for Him to work. Confession of sin and the power of God’s word sets people free. For more information please visit www.facingGoliath.org.
What will take your ministry to the next level?
I work outside of the non-profit, which is a full-time endeavor in itself. Please pray for the finances of this ministry so we can concentrate more on ministering rather than fundraising. We are so appreciative of the current donors and praise God for what He has done! Prayer itself is a major need. We are always looking for recommendations for places to serve, especially if you have a connection there somehow.

Making an impact for Wherever He leads. Al Greco is a Christian musician, songwriter, performer, and evangelist. He has recorded 20 albums since 1995, under the Christian music label Incubator Records. He is passionate about performing music for the Lord and going wherever God leads.

Al was born in Omaha, Nebraska to a Sicilian family. It was his mother who led him to accept Jesus as his Savior at age seven. His parents divorced when Al was eleven. Although he knew the Lord, the divorce left Al without any positive male influence. When Al’s mother remarried, they moved to Los Angeles, California. Growing up in the 1960’s, Al was profoundly influenced by the music around him. It was not long before he got his feet wet in the LA rock and roll scene and became a musician himself.

Feeling homesick for Omaha, he ran away at fourteen. He lived on the streets until the police brought him home. In response to this crisis, Al’s mother agreed to let him move back to Omaha and live with his real father.
Al told God he wanted to go home to Omaha, but he would stay in Chicago instead if God wanted—it was His choice. Al applied to both Moody Bible College in Chicago and Grace University in Omaha.

Al strives “to be caught being busy for the Kingdom… I’m most at peace when I’m doing God’s work. When I’m not doing His work, and I’m idle, I’m a miserable wretch.” His favorite bible verse is Joshua 1:8-9, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (NIV) Twenty albums later, Al is still going strong. To purchase CDs, email him at algreco1@hotmail.com. Al’s prayer requests include finances, continuation of his music ministry, and the ability travel to the mission field with his music. I used to think, ‘Wouldn’t it be awesome to go and tour around the country and just sing about Jesus,’ and, I got to thinking… I don’t need to travel all over the country, all over the world, unless the Lord wants me to do that… And I’ve prayed about that with the Lord, and the Lord knows my heart… So that’s where I’m at, and I’m just having the time of my life—singing every week, just ministering through music, and if God opens the door for me to travel, we’re out of here.”

Then and Now
Camp Rivercrest was founded in the 1950’s, when the Christian Missionary Alliance purchased the property. Originally, the sleeping quarters and all the services were held in tents. When the chapel was first built, 95% of the labor was donated! In fact, nearly every building or construction project since then has been the result of God inspiring people to give individual donations. His hand is evident throughout the efforts of every capital campaign. The camp has recently undergone $1.5 million in major improvements, including a newly expanded dining hall. The camp has two fully furnished lodges with bathrooms and showers, each of which accommodates 50 people to sleep, and a meeting space for many more. There are also 14 cabins that hold 10 people each. Both the cabins and lodges are even heated and air-conditioned! Healing an Orphan Heart
The Omaha-based organization Child Caring Institute House of Prayer Philippines (CCIHOPP) outlines how their ministry and sponsorship is transforming the life of a young Filipino orphan, Kirvy Sanchez. Hello, reading audience. It is our pleasure to introduce you to Kirvy Sanchez! This young man has experienced the heart of Jesus Christ through the ministry Child Caring Institute House of Prayer Philippines (CCIHOPP). CCIHOPP is focused on teaching how to live a dynamic, constant lifestyle of prayer and on healing the hearts of orphans in the Philippines.
Email us: info@thesaltmag.com
Who is Kirvy? Kirvy (pronounced like "Kirby") is 12 years old and lives in the town of Dau. His mother died in a car accident, and his father was never in the picture. Kirvy lives with an aunt; however, his aunt has six children of her own to care for, and the family is very poor, so it is difficult for her to provide all that this precious boy needs. Through the amazing love of a local church that partners with CCIHOPP, The First Baptist Church of Dau, Kirvy does NOT live like an orphan anymore! First Baptist provides a meal for Kirvy every day, thanks to CCIHOPP's sponsorship. Church leader Robert Tiglao and his family reach out to Kirvy on a regular basis, acting as the hands and feet of Jesus. They recently took him to buy new sandals, a small thing many of us in America would take for granted. They also do things like take him out to get a snack. Even the Senior Pastor of the church, Jimmy Fundar, reaches out to Kirvy.
www.thesaltmag.com | Page 17
Pastor Jimmy says, “At first, when CCIHOPP began to help Kirvy, he was very shy. He didn’t know who was helping him; he only knew he could go to school and eat every day now. We had to pick him up for church, and he would not talk to anyone at all. Now, he comes to church on his own, and he is bringing his cousins, his neighbors, and anyone he meets on the way to church! "He also stays after the service and helps to clean the pews and different areas of the building. It is such a blessing to watch the Lord work though CCIHOPP.”
What’s Next for Kirvy? CCIHOPP has successfully funded two years of "Complete Sponsorship" for Kirvy. He just entered into 2nd grade (he is 12, so he is behind overall scholastically, but catching up quickly). CCIHOPP is continuing its effort to finish fundraising for three more years. This should allow Kirvy to finish a major educational step-graduating from primary school. After Kirvy graduates from primary school, CCIHOPP will likely assist him to transition into the workforce or provide seed money for a business that utilizes his strengths. Another option may be for Kirvy to begin secondary school or even college to study for a specific professional career. CCIHOPP hopes to invest spiritually in Kirvy’s life over the next few years to find out where God is leading him, and what God’s life purpose and assignment is for him. In addition to the love he receives at his new home church, First Baptist, Kirvy will eventually be introduced to key evangelistic programs of CCIHOPP. Fresh Start (see cover story on page 20), the Clifton Strength Finders, several life-purpose exercises, and personal one-on-one mentoring are some of the main tools and ministries he will experience. All of these heart-healing ministry tools, and especially the introduction to a lifestyle of prayer, are all on the near horizon for Kirvy in the Lord’s timing, when he is ready to receive more.
After Kirvy? CCIHOPP is on fire to provide sponsorship for more orphans than just Kirvy. They have a vision to reach
Page 18 | www.thesaltmag.com
a whole generation of orphans, one soul at a time. The immediate goal is to raise money in advance for three more years of sponsorship. Once funds are in place to provide for Kirvy, funds will be raised to sponsor other orphans as well.
Allan Pettit believes that in the Lord’s timing, CCIHOPP will plant orphanages (referred to as "child caring institutes" in the Philippines) in several key areas of the country where orphanism is prominent (See page 41 for more details on the orphan epidemic in the Philippines).
Kirvy lives in Dau, which
He also believes that the capital o someday, God will even use CCIHOPP to help broker adoptions for American couples in America, and possibly other countries.
Now What? The small staff of CCIHOPP does their best to hear the heart of God and respond. Kirvy Sanchez is this faith in action. CCIHOPP currently raises just $770 per year to provide what they call "Complete Sponsorship" for Kirvy. Complete sponsorship includes: $50 - Annual school tuition and books, plus one uniform $720 – A daily meal for 365 days a year (about $2 per day).
Want to support Salt Magazine?
What is the Value of your Money? What do you spend $50 on? A tank of gas? A new outfit? For the price of little more than going out to eat at a steak house, a complete year of schooling is provided, an investment with lasting impact in the life of an orphan like Kirvy. That is an investment that will last for eternity where no rust can destroy or moth can eat! (See Matthew 6:19-21.)
Why $2/Day? The Philippines is a Third World nation, so the American dollar goes five times* farther than in the United States. In the town of Dau, where Kirvy lives, $2 can purchase a full meal that includes a plate of rice, delicious meat, a side, and even a drink.
h is a few hours north of Manila, of the Philippines.
CCIHOPP provides only one meal daily because Kirvy lives with family that takes care of his other needs. As Kirvy grows older, he will be encouraged to work to provide for his other daily meals and transition into self-sufficiency.
The truth is, however, many of us here in Renewal America (or anywhere in the world) have orphan hearts as well, even though we have living parents. “Our life purpose, as I see it, is to love Father God, live with Jesus, and watch Him work the Holy Spirit,” says CCIHOPP founder, Allan Pettit. “God created us to enter into relationship with Him. If we live our own lives, we forfeit that purpose and wonder why we are left feeling empty. After I finally implemented and maintained a real lifestyle of simply talking to God without stopping, my life has never been the same." This is a taste of what Jesus said: "The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)." - John 10:10 (Amplified Bible) Are you a spiritual orphan? To learn more about what it means to be a spiritual orphan, be sure to read the future issues of Salt Magazine!
*- estimated value based on 2012 conversion rates.
If orphans are sponsored in the future with a different living situation, then they may receive a different number of meals. For more information about CCIHOPP (including how to donate), email allan@ccihopp.org.

Fresh Start ~ It's NEVER too late! Everyone, at some point in their lives, experiences some sort of offense, hurt, or loss. Steve Peterson, founder of Fresh Start for All Nations, met with Salt Magazine to share with us how this ministry provides people with tools to deal with those issues of our heart that affect us daily. "We love to help men, women, and young people become free from the effects of offense, hurt, and loss. When you think about it, who hasn't been hurt? Who hasn't been offended? Who hasn't experienced a loss? It might be relational, financial, environmental, in their home, family, a tsunami —any number of things. A lifestyle of forgiven and forgiving—that is what is powerful, and the resulting freedom in Jesus Christ that follows," says Steve. Page 20 | www.thesaltmag.com
What happens at Fresh Start? What clearly makes Fresh Start unique is that the ministry focuses on your heart rather than your circumstances or the effects of your loss changing. This is a very effective focus, because it makes it about your heart, something you CAN influence or change. Fresh Start meets every Tuesday night at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 150th and Blondo, from 7 pm to 9 pm. The environment is safe and caring. The first hour is a group experience split into two expressions: the main gathering and Fresh Start NOW. The main gathering features a person's Fresh Start "story" or a unique message on some aspect of forgiveness. The Fresh Start NOW group is focused on high school and college, young people ages 14-25. It is high energy and interactive, with group dramas, games, and also
opportunity to discover issues of offense, hurt, and loss. The second hour of the main Fresh Start gathering is focused on the Freedom Series —more truth and perspective, examples on forgiving one another, and identifying other hindrances to relational wholeness. "Fresh Start is a purposeful path, as well as a process," says Steve Peterson. There are actually six parts to this purposeful path.
Want to support Salt Magazine?
How do I get a Fresh First, you identify who or what has hurt you, or offended you, or what loss you've experienced. Secondly, you discover how you have been affected by the offense, hurt or loss. Third, you consider how you have responded—what you have said, done, or decided. The fourth part on this path is to pour out your heart to God. This could include really getting REAL with God, even pouring out your complaint.
Start?
You don't want to stay in the fourth part, of course. During this part of the process, you also learn how to actually give thanks, no matter what the circumstances or prospect for change. The fifth part is, finally, when you actually FORGIVE the person who has hurt, offended, or wronged you. Finally, in the sixth part you conclude the process by releasing that person to Jesus and choosing to pray for and bless them. You "CANCEL THE DEBT" they owe you.
The forgiver

If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, and are tired of living a life less than God's design for you, Page 22 | www.thesaltmag.com

Silas West - The member care catalyst
Salt Magazine was blessed with an opportunity to interview Silas West from Waypoint Church. When we conducted the interview in 2011, he was transitioning from a leadership position in the ministry Word Made Flesh into an Associate Pastor role for Waypoint Church, so we are excited to share about BOTH ministries. Word Made Flesh is a mission organization that serves the poorest of the poor, striving to serve them and point them to Jesus while building community and reconciliation. Waypoint Church focuses on living life “Up, In, and Out.” “Up” means loving Father God with all of your heart, mind, and soul (see Deuteronomy 6:4), receiving God’s love into your heart, and trusting Jesus to heal you from all of your sin and hurts. “In” means loving the church as the body of Christ. “Out” means loving those who do not know God, as guided by the Holy Spirit. Tell us your story
My name is Silas West. I have a wife, Kimberly, and my four kids are ages 10, 9, 7, and 5. My wife and I met at Asbury College in Wilmer, Kentucky (a Christian liberal arts college), and both of us have a heart for missions. I grew up as a missionary kid in Kenya, Africa, and I thought I was going to go back and do community development work in Africa. I enjoyed the bush and the rural atmosphere. I always said I would NEVER work in a slum, NEVER work in a city among Page 26 | www.thesaltmag.com
the poor, among street children particularly, and another funny one was that I would NEVER work in Asia. God used a circumstance in my life where I was back visiting my parents who had been relocated to the outskirts of Nairobi—a place I really didn’t want them to be—to expose me to an associate pastor who spent his days living and working in a slum nearby. I started spending some time with him and met God in a way that I had not experienced Him before. God broke my heart for the poor around the world, but particularly, He used that time to lead me to Asia. That is how I got involved with Word Made Flesh, which was just getting started at the time and needed staff. I ended up fulfilling all those “Nevers” in the opposite way—I worked in Asia, worked among street children in a slum, and lived in a slum (not just worked in one!) from 1997 to 2008 in the inner city of Katmandu, Nepal.

What is Word ade Flesh?
It comes directly from John 1:14 where the bible says, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”— the idea being that we are an incarnational ministry serving Jesus among the poor. Plus, when Jesus first spoke openly in public about who He was, He said, “I come to bring good news to the poor, bring sight to the blind, and make the lame walk.” We must recognize that His kingdom is one that brings freedom to those that are living in oppression, who are marginalized, and who are outcasts. He seeks to bring wholeness to His people by bringing those who are on the outskirts of society back into the

That is what Word Made Flesh is all about: building communities and nurturing those communities in these places of poverty, so that those who are poor become a vital, integral part of the life of the community. The poor are not just being served. The truth is that we are serving AMONG the poor, not just providing service TO the poor. As their needs are being met by the community, they are also invited into mutual relationships where they can also meet the needs of those who are serving beside them. Synopsis of WMF
The founder of Word Made Flesh, Shane Clark, spent a year traveling the world with the vice president of World Vision at the time, Dr. Samuel Kamaleson. Experts say Dr. Kamaleson had more face-to-face encounters with pastors than anyone else in the history of the church. God used that time to really break Shane’s heart for the poor. Shane went to Chennai, India and put together a board of directors and got Chris Heuertz, fresh out of college, to help him start the first children’s home for AIDS patients.

This was the first care home that focused on the AIDS epidemic and how it was making orphans due to the many children who were born

Journey
I came back to college from the trip to Africa where I was in the slum with a pastor. I was praying in my apartment by myself when I stumbled upon a passage in a book by Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest. It said, “We slander God by our eagerness to serve Him without knowing Him.” I felt like He was using that to speak to me. I was in college at the time, and I hadn’t yet had a lot of one-onone experiences where I heard God’s voice, but that was the first time I very clearly heard His voice saying “Go to India.” I asked Him, “What does that mean? I don’t know you? I grew up in a church, my grandfather was a pastor, and my dad was a missionary! I went to a Christian school, a Christian missionary boarding school in Africa, and a Christian college. I spend time praying and reading my bible every day. What else can I do to know you more?” My first reaction was revulsion; I did not want to go India. Asia was not on my to-do list, but I knew that I had to do it. I looked around campus for what mission organizations were sending people to India, and that is when I first came across Word Made Flesh. The director, Chris, was taking students to intern at the children’s home.
www.thesaltmag.com | Page 27
So, I went and spent 6 months in India, in that children’s home. They would send the interns up to one of Mother Theresa’s homes in Calcutta to experience working among the poor there, the destitute, and one of the homes for the dying. I had the experience of meeting with Mother Theresa the year before she passed away. I had a couple times to just sit and talk with her. It was pretty amazing—I felt like when I was with her, I was in the presence of Christ; you could sense her dependency on His spiritual leadership. She said, “You are here to serve the poor right? So what are you doing here talking to me? Get out there and find Jesus among the poor.” She was very humble that way, like “I really don’t have anything to say to you; just do what God called me to do—serve and encounter the face of Christ in that way.” That was how I really got shaped and mentored in my early involvement in Word Made Flesh. When I moved back to the United States, Word Made Flesh was not asking for people to join, but they took me anyway. I had done my internship with my best friend, Seth, from college. I didn’t know it, but God was doing the same thing in his heart as in mine. Seth went to the Word Made Flesh office the day before I did and said he wanted to go to Calcutta, and the director, Chris, agreed that it sounded great. The next day, I showed up and asked to go to Calcutta also (and at the time, Word Made Flesh had no concept of sending people in teams yet, like we would now). They did not want to put all their effort in one place, so they asked me to go somewhere else in South Asia. I did not even know where South Asia was, so I looked on a map and saw Calcutta, and really close to it was Katmandu, Nepal. I thought, “Oh, I like mountains!" so I
Page 28 | www.thesaltmag.com
suggested Katmandu. Chris then asked me to pray about it for a week for a confirmation. After I finished praying for that week, I was feeling even stronger to go to Katmandu. I told Chris, and he responded that he had always prayed that Word Made Flesh would someday have a presence in Katmandu—he didn’t want to mention that earlier and influence my decision to go there. So, my love for mountains was my calling. I became the regional coordinator for all of South Asia.
I came on staff in 1997 with Word Made Flesh, and at the time it just had a children’s home in southern India, and it wasn’t a sending organization like it is now. The director who had started the children’s home, Chris Heuertz, and his wife, Phileena, had moved back to the United States. They felt God opening doors of Word Made Flesh to use the way God has transformed their lives to do service among the poor. They wanted to replicate that in the lives of other young people who were looking for a similar way to launch into the calling God had on their lives. Your role in WMF involves member care. What is member care?
In 2003, our Community Care (member care) Department first got started, and it has been growing ever since. Our department is key in the selection/candidacy stage of someone applying to join the mission, and then as they are accepted by the interview committee. It was a result of people burning out and large-scale attrition happening, and we did not want to see that happen anymore. Our department (me and one or two others) does the training, gets them ready to go, and makes sure they have their support in (part of that is the administrative department). We also equip them with tools they need to raise their funds and to get them into the field. We realized that some of our new staff were just sinking or swimming, so we really needed to accompany them well. We developed a new staff process for the first three years where they
Want to support Salt Magazine?
are walked through the field with a veteran staff member and accompanied really well in areas of spiritual formation as well as personal development. Of course they are called to serve here, but what are their values and true calling? At the end of that threeyear period, they are asked to make a more long-term commitment to the community or go back to the States. It is sad but no surprise that the leading cause of missionary attrition is that missionaries cannot get along with one another. We look at marriages, and we see the same thing in our society. Marriages within the church as well as outside the church are falling apart. A lot of it comes down to a break down in communication. People join Word Made Flesh because they are drawn to our value of community. There can be disillusionment for awhile because people think that the community of Word Made Flesh will be great, but community is only as great as those who are a part of it; we all come to community with our own brokenness. Our own dysfunction can come from family dysfunction or not ever being taught how to relate to one another in a healthy, whole way. It’s not going to be a magic fix if I join a community —I am going to bring that same brokenness into it. Some things we do that are fairly new for us are mediation of conflict, when one of our areas/fields has a conflict that has escalated to a place where it is becoming dysfunctional. I’ve had to come into the field a couple times to work through conflict resolutions skills and basic communication skills— the same kind of thing I would do for marriage counseling, but on a team scale. After those times, I would develop ways to get the information used to bring resolution out to our entire staff and also tools and resources that can equip them to better deal with conflict. How did you transition into the staff at your church, Waypoint?
I had been with Word Made Flesh for 14 years; I loved it there and had no intention of leaving. In April of 2011, I did a one-month visit to the Asia fields. I was also invited to speak at a conference in Malaysia on member care. It was a really good time for me to reconnect with the communities I had been a part of
Email us: info@thesaltmag.com
when I left Asia in 2008. I got back and met with Matthew and Josh, the Pastor and Associate Pastor of Waypoint, but I thought they just wanted to catch up on how my trip went. I caught them up on my travels, and then Matthew said, “Let’s get to what we really want to talk about.” I had a sense of immediate panic thinking, “Did one of my kids do something bad in Sunday school?” Everything happens when I am gone. They outlined how Josh was planning to leave the following year (in 2012) because he and his wife were called to plant a church in Sicily. He had been developing this new Waypoint drive for church planting on an international basis. They needed somebody to replace him, but also somebody who had experience in caring for, sending out, and training missionaries, and that is what I do with Word Made Flesh. They also knew it would be a long shot because of my commitment to Word Made Flesh. Originally I said, “I don’t think so… It sounds great, but I feel really committed to Word Made Flesh, but I am taking the offer seriously, so I’ll pray about it for a few weeks.” It was a rough month, but ultimately I heard from God that Word Made Flesh could go on without me, and I had this strong desire to step into this role at the church. What are your prayer points?
For Word Made Flesh: We have done very well over the years developing a network where we individually raise support, but when we leave the organization our supporters go with us, so people are not supporting Word Made Flesh, they are supporting the person. It is good, and I think we need to continue with that, but we need a base of people who are just giving to the mission. We are entering a phase of development as an organization, as a mission, as a movement, where we are seeking out a new model of fundraising that does not just rely on individuals raising money, but people are giving gifts for the mission itself. In the future, we would love to hire more minority staff, but their communities are not always able to help them raise the support they need to maintain salary. We are limited to bringing on people that have funds www.thesaltmag.com | Page 29
or churches that can support them. That is hurtful for us, because we are missing out on a huge part of the body of Christ within our own country. We would love to see African-American or LatinAmerican missionaries sent into the world, but they both lack access to funding. If we could build a bigger support base within Word Made Flesh itself, where we have funds that are freed up, we could bring people into the mission who have a vision and a calling but do not have access to funds. How can a person give to Word Made Flesh? The simplest and preferred way is to visit our website: www.wordmadeflesh.com. There is a link to give to Word Made Flesh. You can also call the Word Made Flesh office at 1-800-CRY4KIDS. For Waypoint: As I transitioned in, we were beginning this new phase of sending people out. We have a team in Scotland under Pastor Tom Fraley. They have been really gracious with us as we try to figure out how to send people out and to support them well in both care and infrastructure. As we get ready to send out these next few teams to Afghanistan, Thailand, and Sicily, it is on me in this new phase to really develop the support structure that these teams and the future teams will depend on. A big prayer request for me is that I could quickly get my head around what is already in place and all the work that Josh has done, and that I would be able to honor what he has done and then also take it to the level that it needs to be. Overall, we are also praying into getting a piece of property so that we could have our own building and not be mobile anymore like we are now. As we look at becoming this hub of sending people out into the world, we really want a home base of operations where these missionaries and church planters that we are sending out could also have a sense of having a place to come home to. They will be nomadic in some ways and not have a sense of home. Many will be selling their homes and becoming “homeless” when they come back to the States. We want to be the support bases for all these people, but we don’t have a home base ourselves. We are just praying that the prayer strings of heaven are loosed, so please join us!
me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me (NIV).” I love that one, because it speaks to the unity and community of being in the Trinity and that in that moment, Christ invites us all to participate in that same form of unity with Him and the Father. Through that, the world knows that we belong to Him and that He sent us. John 1:14: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth (NIV).” What do you wish you knew as a
new believer?
I think that it sounds contradictory to your question, but what I would like to tell myself is, “Take in all of this new, exciting faith that you have now as a child in God, and pay attention to it. When you get older and a little more cynical, you will need that child-like faith.” I love being a father and looking at the simple faith of my children, who know nothing else but a faithful God. They have seen His provision. They have been friends with children who have eaten out of the garbage, but they know that our home is one where needy kids and adults are welcome. They think that is what it means to be a Christian. Their faith is simple, and they know that if they have a need, they pray to God. He may or may not meet the need, but the first place you go is to pray—not to depend on yourself. I think that even as a 38-year-old Christian, who has been a believer for most of those years, I tend to depend on myself a lot because “I know how to do it.” Then I look at my kids and I remember, “I need to be SO dependent on God.”

Whether it is in their marriage or ministering the gospel in a cross-cultural setting, they are burnt out. I love the idea of caring for them and being a counselor. I am earning my master’s degree in counseling right now because I am drawn to be a spiritual director or counselor to those people. I would love to see a ministry center here in Omaha developed, where—maybe it would be just a home with an apartment in it—where people can come and find restoration. That is something maybe 10 or 15 years down the road.

At the end of my life, I would like to look back and see a life of one who took the experiences I have had, and then used them to walk with people and give them an opportunity to find restoration in the places where they are broken so that they can be restored and sent back out into the harvest field. I have seen a lot of fathers who are pastors or missionaries sacrifice their families, their children, or even their marriages for the sake of the ministry. I pray that my family always comes first, that whatever my kids see me doing, they see me first and foremost being a present father to them—one who is attentive, one who teaches sacrifice and that sometimes we make sacrifices for each other, for the sake of others, but never at their expense. I want them to always know a father who cares for them and points to the true Father.

Cover Story
ed from p.23
"We're trying to transform people; we're not trying to make people go through an anger management class." Fresh Start NOW allows young adults to have deep conversations about their hurts, offenses, or losses (in groups of all guys or all girls) and to go through the Fresh Start process. Coaching is common, but not counseling; the goal is not to provide an immediate "answer" to your situation, but rather to dig deep into how your heart was affected by your hurt or loss. While disclosing a story from his childhood, Joe explained the swimming concept of “bobbing.” This swimming exercise is a way of practicing holding your breath by slowly exhaling until you reach the bottom of a pool and pushing off of it to reach the surface again. It might be fun, but you never really go anywhere. Many of us are going through life this way, just surviving breath by breath, whether it is at a job, in school, with friends or parents, etc. "I believe the youth of America are powerful, passionate, motivated, energetic, and excited, but we don't know where we're going." says Joe. Joe's goal at Fresh Start NOW is to provide that purpose and direction for this youthful generation—to help bobbers become swimmers, purposely going in a direction, using the water of their circumstances to fulfill their purpose and go somewhere in life. Page 32 | www.thesaltmag.com
A bible verse dear to Joe's heart is Proverbs 4:23 (NIV): “Above all else guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Corresponding with this verse, Joe has come to realize that everyone, especially today’s youth, are in a deadly war for their hearts, making the concept of guarding one’s heart essential to life. Fresh Start NOW gives youth the tools necessary to experience freedom while they are young, and not wait to realize it until they are much older (i.e., in their 50’s or 60's). That's why it's called Fresh Start NOW! Joe's heart is focused on saving youth from experiencing a “mid-life crisis” due to misplaced career efforts and hard hearts they could have been freed from when they were a teenager. Fresh Start NOW stays relevant to this generation because the leaders are authentic and have personally experienced true forgiveness for themselves. There’s no awkward hug or fake "I forgive you" statements with Fresh Start NOW; instead, they patiently work through multiple levels of forgiveness, making the transition real and permanent. This allows each participant an opportunity to experience unparalleled freedom from any hurt and become emotionally whole to reconcile, with long lasting results. You can have this too!
heart. Finally, there is an opportunity to break into small groups to discuss the message and be encouraged to live a lifestyle of forgiveness. There are sermons in audio and video format, MP3s to download, PDFs to read, and so much more in the resource section! No matter where you are in life, no matter how bad the decisions you have made, or no matter how long you’ve been living in pain, it’s never too late for a Fresh Start. Your Fresh Start may be only a click, a phone call, or a Tuesday night away, so don’t wait. Your Fresh Start can begin NOW!

Ephesians 6:18 Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints. Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. James 5:14-16 (ESV) Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
