he judge overseeing Puerto Rico’s bankruptcy cases, U.S. District Court Judge Laura Taylor Swain, recently dismissed a suit brought by six island credit unions accusing the government of leading them into buying Puerto Rico bonds, knowing it was not going to pay the debt.

Swain said the evidence provided was not strong enough to support the claims.

The six state-chartered credit unions are part of a financial cooperative system that provides banking and financial services to U.S. District Court Judge Laura Taylor Swain communities in Puerto Rico. They hold certain debt instruments issued by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, other ment bonds.

When the government filed for bankruptcy in commonwealth instrumentalities, and the Government 2017, the cooperative system had to engage in a plan Development Bank (GDB). to avoid a collapse of that banking system.

Health authorities to augment COVID death info in effort to encourage vaccination

ealth Secretary Carlos Mellado López announced Thursday that authorities will include additional information on deaths in their COVID-19 data reports.

“We are providing the information necessary for

the population to make decisions based on scientific evidence and feel confident that the data provided is recent, objective and meaningful for the person who reads it,” Mellado López said in a written statement.

“Unfortunately, most of the people who have passed away are people with pre-existing conditions and who either were not vaccinated or had been vaccinated but had not received the booster dose, despite being eligible for it. We believe that this information will once again demonstrate the value of the vaccine and the booster dose.”

“The report on deceased people shows some days that the number of deaths is higher in vaccinated people than in non-vaccinated ones; the explanation for this is that 74 percent of the population is vaccinated, so proportionally, the number will be higher,” the Health chief added. “We understand that this can create confusion. We want to clarify it with this new way of sharing data with citizens.”

Mellado López said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that unvaccinated people have a five times greater risk of contracting COVID-19 and 14 times greater risk of dying from the disease when compared to fully vaccinated people.

“If we compare it with vaccinated people who received the booster dose or booster, that risk increases the possibility of [an unvaccinated person] contracting the virus to 10 times and 20 times more in the possibility of deaths from COVID-19,” he said.

“Fully vaccinated people have a much lower risk of COVID-19 virus infection and of dying from virus complications compared to unvaccinated people,” Mellado López said. “This risk is further reduced in people fully vaccinated with a booster dose when compared to those who do not have the additional dose. It has been shown that the effectiveness of the vaccine diminishes over time. That is why it is necessary for eligible people to go to a vaccination center to receive their booster dose.”

At this time, those eligible to receive the booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine are: people 12 years of age and older who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and people 18 years of age and older who received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine.

You are eligible for a booster if five months have passed since you completed your main Pfizer vaccination series, six months in the case of Moderna, or two months after receiving the Johnson & Johnson single dose.

ov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia said earlier this week that the reason for a negative COVID-19 test requirement mandated by Executive Order 2021-80 for those who intend to attend a mass event is to discourage the holding of such events.

“I have kept that in the executive order, precisely because it is working as a deterrent for these activities to take place,” said the governor at a press conference late Wednesday. “I have to admit it.”

“I have not changed that order to say proof of vaccination or negative test in part because I know that it serves as a deterrent, because I know that it is not easy to obtain proof, I admit it,” Pierluisi added.

“They may have to stand in line for quite some time, and meanwhile, they may have to pay for it.”

The governor did not rule out amending that language in upcoming executive orders, depending on the behavior of positivity levels.

The suspect, Carlos Julián Maldonado, the director of the Tourism Office of the Municipality of Barceloneta, has been suspended from his job.

“The person who was in possession of the vehicle was summoned by the Police,” Díaz said in a televised interview. “We have a lot of information, we have strong evidence. Time will prove us right. We are corroborating the information in relation to this accident. The vehicle we have seized has impacts practically according to the scene we are investigating.”

“We have witnesses, we have information, we have the vehicle to analyze and that is why we are going to keep going slowly and seek information to take it to the Department of Justice,” he added.

Díaz also indicated that a rear-view mirror was obtained at the scene that will be used as evidence.

Meanwhile, the blue BMW car was to be taken to the Institute of Forensic Sciences for analysis, he said.

After being summoned by the police, Maldonado did not want to cooperate with the authorities and requested a lawyer.

Barceloneta Mayor Wanda Soler said she regretted the situation and reported that the official was suspended from his post pending an administrative investigation.

Tropical forestry pioneer, conservationist Wadsworth is mourned

he International Institute of Tropical Forestry (IITF) of the U.S. Forest Service and the El Yunque National Forest on Thursday mourned the death of Frank H. Wadsworth, an American ranger, forest conservationist and scientist based in Puerto Rico since 1942.

“Dr. Wadsworth was a pioneer in the study, conservation and management of forests in Puerto Rico.

He humbly and compassionately shared his knowledge for the benefit of all,” said Grizelle González, IITF research leader. “His quality of person and his gift of service to the public will continue as a model for us and future generations.”

“Frank H. Wadsworth was not only the most important conservationist in Puerto Rico during his tenure, he was also able to forecast the problems facing El Yunque today,” added Keenan Adams, an El Yunque forestry supervisor. “Our success today builds on the work he put in place years ago. Frank was the personification of a public servant. We extend our condolences and solidarity hugs to his family at this time.”

Ariel Lugo, former director and emeritus scientist of the IITF, joined the statements of mourning by highlighting that “Dr. Wadsworth arrived in Puerto Rico by boat without knowing anything about the island.”

Frank H. Wadsworth “humbly and compassionately shared his knowledge for the benefit of all,” said Grizelle González, research leader at the International Institute of Tropical Forestry.

Wadsworth chose to come to work on the island, even though it was presented as a joint option to relocate to Alaska.

“Puerto Rico was the winner, since for the next 80 years Dr. Wadsworth focused his enormous energy, talent and discipline in the development of tropical forestry, which did not exist at that time,” Lugo said.

Wadsworth, born in Chicago and a graduate of the University of Michigan with a doctorate in forestry, was considered an authority on the forests of Puerto Rico.

He worked at the Tropical Forests Experimental Station in Río Piedras as a research officer, and was director of the International Institute of Tropical Forestry in the United States from 1956 to 1978. After his retirement from the Forest Service, he continued to work as a researcher and consultant in several tropical countries, many of them in Latin America.

Likewise, he published 100 books and scientific articles, among them “Common Trees of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands” (1964-1989), in co-authorship with Elbert Little, and “Flora of Virgin Gorda” (1976), with Little and R.O. Woodbury.

He was also a mainstay in the management of El Yunque and the development of the recreational offering in the 1960s, including the construction of the Yokahu Tower, one of the forest’s iconic monuments.

Throughout his career, Wadsworth fostered the education of Puerto Rican youth through his involvement with Listening Children of America and was a mentor to countless young people, students, and researchers.

The activity was coordinated by the Youth Mission group of the Santo Cristo de la Salud Parish.

“Every year we want to create awareness in our children and young people about the witness and legacy from what we call ‘social holiness’ as an expression of the path to which we Christians are called,” said Father Pedro Ortiz, parish priest of the town, in a written statement. “And, obviously Bishop Parrilla, who was Auxiliary Bishop of our diocese of Caguas and co-founder of the cooperative project in Puerto Rico, was a great witness of the path of holiness and is a reference of transcendental importance when referring to the pastors of the Puerto Rican Church.”

The liturgical celebration was full of significant liturgical signs and symbols applied to the reality of the times.

Among those that stand out was the offering of the boys and girls at the beginning of the Mass to adore the Child Jesus. They came with three gifts signified in the key values that Bishop Parrilla practiced: Humility, Compassion, and Kindness.

Likewise, social worker Nelson Cotto said, “they played a ‘cooperative’ game to convey the message that in the life project ‘everyone can participate,’ no one should

be excluded from the great social table.”

“And immediately, they recognized the great importance of intergenerational dialogue and support by presenting their elders as living examples of integral education and faith,” he added.

The act was attended by a representation of the Commission for the Beatification of Bishop Parrilla Bonilla, which is preparing to soon provide reports to the Puerto Rican Episcopal Conference to request that the beatification process be opened in the future.

IVU exemption period for school supplies is this weekend

reasury Secretary Francisco Parés Alicea announced Thursday that the second period in fiscal year 2021-2022 for which sales of school uniforms and supplies are free of the sales and use tax (IVU by its Spanish

acronym) will take place this weekend.

“The second period of school sales without the IVU will begin at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7, 2022 and will conclude at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022,” the Treasury secretary said via Twitter.

Also included are poster cards, boxes for storing poster cards, lunch boxes, loose paper, lined paper for ring binders, copy paper, graph paper, tracing paper, manila paper, colored paper, cardstock and other paper supplies, pencil boxes and other boxes for school supplies, pencils, pens, protractors, rulers and scissors.

Likewise, school uniforms, which according to Section 4030.20 (c) (1) of the Puerto Rico Internal Revenue Code are classified as the clothing that is specifically required by the educational institution and that may not have a general or continuous use outside the school to replace ordinary clothing, are exempt from the IVU. Also considered a school uniform are those pieces of clothing and footwear that complement one or more pieces of the uniform, as specifically required by the educational entity.

Bodies in slaying, drowning cases found

sland police on Thursday investigated the discovery of bodies of two individuals who had been shot in the PR-771, Barrio Barranca, La Vega sector of Barranquitas.

According to the police, a 9-1-1 emergency call alerted the authorities about a suspicious situation in the aforementioned location. When the agents arrived at the scene, they found the bodies of a man and a woman estimated to be between 20 and 25 years old, with gunshot wounds, in circumstances that are under investigation.

The bodies were found in the room of a residence and as of press time they had not been identified, nor was a motive behind the event known.

Officers attached to the Homicide Division of the Aibonito Criminal Investigation Corps, along with the prosecutor on duty, will proceed to take charge of the corresponding investigation.

Separately, the director of the Institute of Forensic Sciences on Wednesday night provided the identity of human remains found on a beach in Manatí.

“The Institute of Forensic Sciences

confirmed through DNA analysis and comparison that the human remains found on a beach in Manatí correspond to Elías Espino Rosado,” María Conte Miller said.

“Rapid DNA was used for the analysis and comparison of the genetic material.

The young man’s family was notified of the result.

Espino Rosado, 21, disappeared Sunday night when he was swept away by the current at Los Tubos de Manatí Beach.

Police, Fire, Emergency Management and Coast Guard personnel conducted the search, but were unable to find him.

Parés noted that the applicability of the IVU exemption extends, for the return to classes, to notebooks and electronic books that are required in an official list of school and university books.

Term or layaway sales of uniforms or school supplies will qualify for the IVU exemption when the final payment is made during the exemption period.

Similarly, items purchased with vouchers or “rain checks” will qualify on those days, regardless of the date of issue.

Regarding purchases through the mail, by phone, email or internet, Parés said the purchase will qualify for the IVU exemption when the item is paid for and delivered to the buyer during the established exemption period.

Therefore, items that are pre-ordered and delivered to the buyer during the exemption period qualify for the exemption.

Biden accuses Trump and his allies of holding ‘a dagger at the throat of America’

resident Joe Biden forcefully denounced former President Donald Trump for promoting lies and tearing down democracy because he could not stand the fact that he lost a free and fair election, accusing his predecessor and his allies of holding “a dagger at the throat of America.”

In his most sustained and scathing attack on the former president since taking office, Biden used the anniversary of the Jan. 6 mob assault on the Capitol to condemn Trump for waging an “undemocratic” and “un-American” campaign against the legitimacy of the election system that he likened to the actions of autocrats and dictators in faraway countries.

“The former president of the United States of America has created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election,” Biden said, standing in the same National Statuary Hall invaded by throngs of Trump supporters a year ago.

“He’s done so because he values power over principle, because he sees his own interest as more important than his country’s interest and America’s interest, and because his bruised ego matters more to him than our democracy or our Constitution. He can’t accept he lost.”

Without using Trump’s name, the president assailed the “defeated former president” for trying to rewrite history and for casting the attackers of a year ago as patriots. “Is that what you thought when you looked at the mob ransacking the Capitol, destroying property, literally defecating in the hallways, rifling through the desks of senators and representatives, hunting down members of Congress?”

Biden asked. “Patriots? Not in my view.”

“Those who stormed this Capitol and those who instigated and incited and those who called on them to do so held a dagger at the throat of America and American democracy.”

Trump fired back moments later with a written statement issued from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

“This political theater is all just a distraction for the fact Biden has completely and totally failed,” Trump wrote. “The Democrats want to own this day of January 6th so they can stoke fears and divide America,” he added. “I say, let them have it because America sees through theirs [sic] lies and polarizations.”

Biden and Democratic leaders have scripted a day of addresses, discussions and a candlelight vigil while Republican leaders largely stayed away, with many GOP senators heading to Georgia for the funeral of their former colleague, Johnny Isakson. Trump originally planned a news conference at Mar-a-Lago to rail against the investigation into the attack but canceled to the relief of Republicans who considered it counterproductive.

The disparate approaches to the day reflect how much Jan. 6 has become interpreted through a political lens. Democrats view the storming of the Capitol as an existential threat to constitutional democracy unlike any in modern times. Most Republicans would rather focus on anything else, with some convinced that it is being used as a partisan weapon against them and others fearful of crossing Trump, who continues to wield outsize power within the party.

Feelings remain raw on Capitol Hill, a place of post-traumatic stress that has yet to fully recover from the psychological and political scars of an assault that led to at least seven deaths and hundreds of injuries. More than the

usual acrimony over legislative differences, the legacy of Jan. 6 has exacerbated the toxic rift between members and staff aides on opposite sides of the aisle.

While Biden has hesitated to engage in a back-and-forth with his predecessor, he used his 20-minute speech to more directly blame Trump for encouraging the violence a year ago than ever before and then sitting in his private White House dining room watching television and “doing nothing for hours as police were assaulted, lives were at risk, the nation’s Capitol under siege.”

He offered his most extended rebuttal of the false claims that the 2020 election was somehow stolen, noting that repeated recounts, court battles and inquiries had turned up no meaningful fraud. He pointed out that Republicans did not challenge Republican victories for Congress and governor’s mansions based on the same ballots they claim were illegitimate in the presidential race.

Biden took on efforts to recast the narrative of what happened Jan. 6, which some Republicans have dismissed as little more than a protest that got out of hand. “This wasn’t a group of tourists,” Biden said. “This was an armed insurrection. They weren’t looking to uphold the will of he people, they were looking to deny the will of the people.”

Biden also touched on voting rights legislation stalled in the Senate, although he has a separate speech on the subject scheduled for next week.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who spoke before Biden, said, “We must pass voting rights bills that are now before the Senate.”

Republicans accused the White House and Democrats of politicizing the attack to promote legislation meant to benefit their own party and rejected Biden’s indictment of Trump.

“What brazen politicization of January 6 by President Biden,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., wrote on Twitter following the speech.

Graham himself broke with Trump on that day a year ago, saying, “All I can say is count me out, enough is enough.” But it did not take long for him, like most Republicans, to fall in line behind the former president again.

These are the people who died in connection with the Capitol riot

s a pro-Trump protest turned into a violent attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6 last year, four people in the crowd died.

— Ashli Babbitt, an Air Force veteran, was fatally shot by a Capitol Police officer as rioters tried to breach the House chamber.

— Kevin D. Greeson died of a heart attack, collapsing on the sidewalk west of the Capitol on Jan. 6.

— Rosanne Boyland appeared to have been crushed in a stampede of fellow rioters as they surged against the police.

— Benjamin Philips, the founder of a pro-Trump website called Trumparoo, died of a stroke.

Greeson and Philips died of natural causes, the Washington medical examiner said in April. He added that Boyland’s death was caused by an accidental overdose.

In the days and weeks after the riot, five police officers who had served at the Capitol on Jan. 6 died.

— Officer Brian D. Sicknick of the Capitol Police, who was attacked by the mob, died on Jan. 7.

— Officer Jeffrey Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department killed himself after the attack.

— Officer Howard S. Liebengood of the Capitol Police

also died by suicide four days afterward.

The Capitol Police had previously said that Sicknick died from injuries sustained “while physically engaging with protesters.” The Washington medical examiner later ruled that he had died of natural causes: multiple strokes that occurred hours after Sicknick’s confrontation with the mob. The medical examiner added, however, that “all that transpired played a role in his condition.”

A bipartisan Senate report, released in June, found that the seven deaths were connected to the Capitol attack. But the report was issued a month before two Metropolitan Police officers — Gunther Hashida and Kyle DeFreytag — died by suicide in July.

The police agencies have not classified the four total suicides as “line of duty” deaths that would provide the victims’ families with enhanced benefits. Washington law excludes suicide deaths from the line-of-duty designation.

About 150 officers from the Capitol Police, the Metropolitan Police Department and local agencies were injured, and hundreds of workers were traumatized by the mob.

In its final report, the House select committee investigating Jan. 6 could mention an official death toll from the violence.

Democratic lawmakers have sought to include the police suicides as deaths that occurred in connection with Jan. 6. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said on Twitter in October that the Capitol riot was “a terror attack” that left “almost 10 dead,” a toll that apparently included the four suicides.

Other Democratic members of Congress have lobbied for the police suicides to be designated as line-of-duty deaths.

Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, and Reps. Jennifer Wexton and Donald S. Beyer Jr., all Democrats of Virginia, wrote to Mayor Muriel E. Bowser of Washington in October asking that Smith be granted a line-of-duty death designation.

“Officer Jeffrey Smith was a mentally healthy person who received a blow to the head, began to exhibit symptoms he had never exhibited before, and nine days later died by suicide,” the lawmakers’ letter said. “The explanation for this tragedy seems clear.”

US Postal Service wants waiver from federal vaccine requirement

he U.S. Postal Service says it wants an exemption to the federal vaccine-or-test mandate because it could hinder its ability to deliver the mail.

“The Postal Service is seeking temporary relief because it wants to ensure that its ability to deliver mail and packages is not hindered amid the current disruptions in the nation’s supply chain,” Darlene Casey, an agency spokesperson, said in a statement Wednesday.

In November, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued an emergency order requiring that organizations with more than 100 employees require their workers to either be vaccinated against COVID-19 or be tested weekly and subjected to stricter face covering requirements.

The Postal Service formally requested a variance from that order in a letter to OSHA dated Tuesday.

“We are now in the middle of our peak season (mid-October through January), which is our busiest and most challenging time of year,” Deputy Postmaster General Doug A. Tulino wrote in the letter, a copy of which was provided to The New York Times.

“The American people are relying on us to timely deliver their mail and packages throughout the holiday season — which aren’t limited to holiday packages but include critical items like Treasury checks, COVID-19 tests and pharmaceuticals.”

He added that the mandate was “likely to result in the loss of many employees” just when they are needed most. Such a loss “would have a potentially catastrophic impact on our ability to provide service to the American public when demand is at its

highest,” Tulino wrote.

The Postal Service requires all employees and contractors “who interact with the public” to wear face coverings “when there is a state, local or tribal directive in place that requires face coverings to be worn,” Tulino wrote. Face coverings are also required for employees and contractors who cannot maintain social distancing, he wrote.

Those policies apply regardless of a person’s vaccination status, he said.

In the past 18 months, the Postal Service has received “only a handful of citations” related to pandemic restrictions, which, Tulino wrote, “illustrates that the Postal Service’s established COVID-19 mitigation measures have been extremely successful to date.”

CDC endorses Pfizer boosters for children ages 12 and older

he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this week endorsed booster shots of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine for children ages 12 to 17, citing rising infections in teens and young adults and a troubling increase in pediatric hospitalizations.

As the contagious omicron variant spreads through the country, public health officials have seized on extra vaccine doses as a first line of defense. Pfizer boosters are now authorized for any American older than 12 who is five months past his or her second dose of the vaccine.

An advisory committee recommended the changes after a meeting Wednesday. They were endorsed by Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the CDC director, on Wednesday night.

Adolescents ages 12 to 15 may begin to receive boosters immediately. Adolescents ages 16 and older were already permitted to receive booster shots, but on Wednesday the CDC panel strengthened the recommendation.

The advisory panel followed a similar move earlier this week by the Food and Drug Administration, which authorized Pfizer boosters for adolescents and shortened the recommended time interval between the initial vaccine regimen and the booster.

The FDA also endorsed “an additional primary dose” of the Pfizer vaccine for moderately or severely immunocompromised children ages 5 to 11, to be given 28 days after their second shots.

Studies suggest that vaccine side effects are minimal in children, although there is lingering concern about a link to myocarditis, a rare inflammation of the heart muscle that occurs more frequently in young men, after vaccination.

In Israel, which started administering boosters to adolescents ages 12 to 15 in June and rigorously tracks side effects, the Health Ministry identified two cases of myocarditis among some 41,600 adolescents in this age group who

received the booster.

Both children were hospitalized briefly and have fully recovered, said Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis, an Israeli health official who addressed the committee.

The booster dramatically reduced infection rates among children ages 12 to 15, Alroy-Preis said. Although most infected youngsters generally did not experience severe COVID-19 that required hospitalization, two children — one boy and one girl — have died, she said.

But while much of the committee’s discussion focused on the risks of the vaccine and its side effects, Dr. Camille Kotton, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School who specializes in transplant and immunocompromised patients, said the focus should be on the disease itself, which is having a devastating effect on vulnerable and immunocompromised patients.

“This is an important thing to think about — the risk of myocarditis from the disease itself,” Kotton said.

life support. Some have died.

“It’s a horrible state of affairs,” Kotton said. “The highly infectious nature of omicron is such that patients who have been incredibly careful the last two years have been getting infected with awful outcomes.”

Dr. Katherine Poehling, director of pediatric population health at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, expressed similar sentiments.

“There are children waiting in the emergency department 18 hours and longer to get into the hospital because we’re so full,” she said. “We have parents asking us can their children get a booster dose, like older children.”

But several committee members said they were increasingly disturbed that only a minority of younger children are getting vaccinated at all, and said it is critical to increase the rates and adhere to other prevention strategies, like masking.

“We can’t put all of the burden on the people who are willing to get vaccinated,” said Lynn Bahta, a committee member who is a registered nurse with the Minnesota Department of Health. “When we have only half our adolescents vaccinated, that adds more burden as well. I am so concerned that the burden of disease prevention is all falling on the vaccinated and them getting the boosters.”

More than 70% of people 12 and older in the United States are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Children younger than 5 are still not eligible for vaccination.

Americans 18 and older who received Moderna’s vaccine can get a booster of any available coronavirus vaccine six months after the second shot. Those who received Johnson & Johnson’s single-shot vaccine may get a booster dose of any available vaccine two months after their first shot.

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are both strongly preferred over the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the CDC has said. Only the Pfizer vaccine is authorized for children ages 5 to 11; boosters are not yet recommended for this group.

In milestone, Toyota surpasses GM in US car sales

oyota Motor unseated General Motors as the top-selling automaker in the United States last year, becoming the first manufacturer based outside the country to achieve that feat in the industry’s nearly 120-year history.

That milestone underlines the changes shaking automakers, which face strong competition and external forces as they move into electric vehicles. And it came in a tumultuous and strange year in which automakers contended with an accelerating shift to electric vehicles and struggled with profound manufacturing challenges. New car sales have been damped by a severe shortage of computer chips that forced automakers to idle plants even though demand for cars has been incredibly robust.

GM, Ford Motor and Stellantis, the automaker created by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot, produced and sold fewer cars than they had hoped to in 2021 because they were hit hard by the chip shortage. Toyota was not hurt as much.

In addition to that shortage, the coronavirus pandemic and related supply-chain problems depressed sales while driving up the prices of new and used cars, sometimes to dizzying heights. Auto manufacturers sold just under 15 million new vehicles in 2021, according to estimates by Cox Automotive, which tracks the industry. That is 2.5% more than in 2020 but well short of the 17 million vehicles the industry usually sold in a year before the pandemic took hold.

GM said Tuesday that its U.S. sales slumped 13% in 2021, to 2.2 million trucks and cars. Toyota had access to more chips because it set aside larger stockpiles of parts after an earthquake and tsunami in Japan knocked out production of several key components in 2011. Its 2021 sales rose more than 10%, to 2.3 million.

“The dominance of the U.S. automakers of the U.S. market is just over,” said Erik Gordon, a business professor at the University of Michigan who follows the auto industry.

“Toyota might not beat GM again this year, but the fact that they did it is symbolic of how the industry changed. No U.S.

automaker can think of themselves as entitled to market share just because they’re American.”

Ford, which released its sales data on Wednesday, finished third.

The shortage of chips stems from the beginning of the pandemic when auto plants around the world closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. At the same time, sales of computers and other consumer electronics took off. When automakers resumed production, they found fewer chips available to them.

Despite weak new-vehicle sales, automakers and dealers alike have been ringing up hefty profits because they have been able to raise prices.

“Sales volumes are down but our margins are up and expenses are down,” said Rick Ricart, whose family owns Ford, Hyundai, Kia and other dealerships around Columbus, Ohio. “We barely had any inventory cost now. Cars arrive on the truck and they’re already sold. They’re gone within 24 to 48 hours.”

Automakers are also contending with the transition to electric cars and trucks. Many companies are spending tens of billions of dollars designing battery-powered models and building plants to produce them. They are racing to catch up to Tesla, which sells a large majority of electric vehicles now.

But most established automakers are unlikely to gain ground in U.S. electric vehicle sales this year because they are not in a position to produce many tens of thousands of such cars for at least another year or two.

And Tesla, which was founded in 2003, is not standing still. After reporting a nearly 90% jump in global sales last year, to just shy of 1 million, the company plans to start mass production at two new factories this year, near Austin, Texas, and Berlin. It has been less affected by the chip shortage because it was able to switch to types of chips that are more readily available.

The electric-car maker does not break out sales by country, but Cox Automotive estimated that it sold more than 330,000 in the United States, or roughly as many vehi-

cles as Mercedes-Benz and BMW each sold here.

Ford is perhaps the only major automaker that could pose a serious competitive threat to Tesla this year. This spring, Ford plans to start selling an electric version of its F-150 pickup truck, the top-selling vehicle in the United States. The company has taken more than 200,000 reservations for that truck, the F-150 Lightning, and hopes to produce more than 50,000 this year. It is increasing production at a plant near Detroit to build 80,000 in 2023 and up to 150,000 in 2024.

“The F-150 is the most important franchise in our company,” Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford’s Americas and international markets group, said in an interview. “The F-150 Lightning shows how serious our commitment is to the EV market.”

Ford has been selling a popular electric sport utility vehicle, the Mustang Mach E, for nearly a year. It said Tuesday that it aimed to increase production of the Mach E to 200,000 vehicles a year by 2023.

Toyota said it sold 2.3 million trucks and cars in the United States in 2021.

S&P 500, Nasdaq gain in choppy trading; cyclicals rise

U

.S. stock indexes swung between gains and losses on Thursday after minutes from the Federal Reserve’s last meeting struck a hawkish note, buoying cyclical sectors, while technology shares were mixed after suffering big losses this week.

Seven of the 11 major S&P sectors fell. Economysensitive energy (.SPNY), financials (.SPSY) and industrials (.SPLRCI) rose.

The communication services sector (.SPLRCL) recouped early losses to move 1.2% higher as Meta Platforms (FB.O) jumped 4.1%, also providing the biggest boost to the S&P 500 <.SPX> and the Nasdaq (.IXIC) indexes.

The banking sub-index (.SPXBK) rose 1.8%, tracking the benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yield , which touched its highest level since April 2021 on Thursday.

So far this week, market participants have rotated out of technology-heavy growth shares and into cyclicals that stand to benefit the most in a high interest rate environment.

The S&P 500 value index (.IVX) is set for its third straight weekly gain, while its growth counterpart (.IGX), down 3.1%, tracked its worst week since early October.

“People now are recognizing that rate hikes are coming and the question is just the timing of that,” said David Keller, chief market strategist at StockCharts.com.

“What we’re seeing so far in early 2022 is a similar sort of environment of elevated volatility, elevated uncertainty, and elevated interest rates, and the reality of what higher rates are going to mean for different sectors.”

The S&P 500 energy sector (.SPNY) has jumped nearly 8.5% so far this week, its best weekly performance in nearly eight months.

Minutes from the Fed’s December meeting signaled the possibility of sooner-than-expected rate hikes and stimulus withdrawal to curb inflation.

“The hawkish tone of the FOMC (the Federal Open Market Committee) minutes suggests that the central bank is concerned about inflation,” said Nancy Davis, founder of Quadratic Capital Management.

“We believe the Fed is likely to be more prudent and take longer than the market expects to evaluate the economy before embarking on a swift rate hiking cycle and balance sheet reduction plan.”

At 12:30 p.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) was down 41.99 points, or 0.12%, at 36,365.12, the S&P 500 (.SPX) was up 11.66 points, or 0.25%, at 4,712.24, and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) was up 40.87 points, or 0.27%, at 15,141.04.

Mega-cap stocks including Google owner Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O), Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), Amazon. com Inc , Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and Apple Inc (AAPL.O) were mixed in early afternoon trading.

Netflix Inc slipped 1.9% after J.P. Morgan cut its price target on the movie streaming platform’s stock.

Leftists are ascendant in Latin America as key elections loom

I

n the final weeks of 2021, Chile and Honduras voted decisively for leftist presidents to replace leaders on the right, extending a significant, multiyear shift across Latin America.

This year, leftist politicians are the favorites to win presidential elections in Colombia and Brazil, taking over from right-wing incumbents, which would put the left and center-left in power in the six largest economies in the region, stretching from Tijuana to Tierra del Fuego.

Economic suffering, widening inequality, fervent anti-incumbent sentiment and mismanagement of COVID-19 have all fueled a pendulum swing away from the center-right and right-wing leaders who were dominant a few years ago.

The left has promised more equitable distribution of wealth, better public services and vastly expanded social safety nets. But the region’s new leaders face serious economic constraints and legislative opposition that could restrict their ambitions — and restive voters who have been willing to punish whoever fails to deliver.

The left’s gains could buoy China and undermine the United States as they compete for regional influence, analysts say, with a new crop of Latin American leaders who are desperate for economic development and more open to Beijing’s global strategy of offering loans and infrastructure investment. The change could also make it harder for the United States to continue isolating authoritarian leftist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba.

With rising inflation and stagnant economies, Latin America’s new leaders will find it hard to deliver real change on profound problems, said Pedro Mendes Loureiro, a professor of Latin American studies at the University of Cambridge. To some extent, he said, voters are “electing the left simply because it is the opposition at the moment.”

Poverty is at a 20-year high in a region where a short-lived commodities boom had enabled millions to ascend into the middle class after the turn of the century. Several nations now face double-digit unemployment, and more than 50% of workers in the region are employed in the informal sector.

Corruption scandals, dilapidated infrastructure and chronically underfunded health and education systems have eroded faith in leaders and public institutions.

Unlike the early 2000s, when leftists won critical presidencies in Latin America, the new officeholders are saddled by debt, lean budgets, scant access to credit and, in many cases, vociferous opposition.

Eric Hershberg, director of the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies at American University, said the left’s winning streak is born out of widespread indignation.

“This is really about lower-middle-class and working-class sectors saying, ‘Thirty years into democracy, and we still have to ride a decrepit bus for two hours to get to a bad health clinic,’” Hershberg said. He cited frustration, anger and “a generalized sense that elites have enriched themselves, been corrupt, have not been operating in the public interest.”

COVID has ravaged Latin America and devastated economies that were already precarious, but the region’s political tilt started before the pandemic.

The first milestone was the election in Mexico of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who won the presidency by a landslide in July 2018.

He declared during his election night address, “The state will cease being a committee at the service of a minority, and it will represent all Mexicans, poor and rich.”

The next year, voters in Panama elected a left-of-center government, and Argentina’s Peronist movement made a stunning comeback despite its leaders’ legacy of corruption and economic mismanagement. President Alberto Fernández, a university professor, celebrated his triumph over a conservative incumbent by promising “to build the Argentina we deserve.”

In 2020, Luis Arce trounced conservative rivals to become president of Bolivia. He vowed to build on the legacy of former leader Evo Morales, a socialist whose ouster the year before had briefly left the nation in the hands of a right-wing president.

Last April, Pedro Castillo, a provincial schoolteacher, shocked Peru’s political establishment by narrowly defeating right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori for the presidency. Castillo, a political newcomer, railed against elites and presented his life story — an educator who worked in a rural school without running water or a sewage system — as an embodiment of their failings.

In Honduras, Xiomara Castro, a socialist who proposed a system of universal basic income for poor families, handily beat a conservative rival in November to become president-elect.

The most recent win for the left came last month in Chile, where Gabriel Boric, a 35-year-

The trend has not been universal. In the past three years, voters in El Salvador, Uruguay and Ecuador have moved their governments rightward. And in Mexico and Argentina last year, left-of-center parties lost ground in legislative elections, undercutting their presidents.

But on the whole, Evan Ellis, a professor of Latin American studies at the U.S. Army War College, said that in his memory, there had never been a Latin America “as dominated by a combination of leftists and anti-U.S. populist leaders.”

“Across the region, leftist governments

will be particularly willing to work with the Chinese on government-to-government contracts,” he said, and possibly “with respect to security collaboration as well as technology collaboration.”

Jennifer Pribble, a political science professor at the University of Richmond who studies Latin America, said the brutal toll of the pandemic in the region made leftist initiatives such as cash transfers and universal health care increasingly popular.

“Latin American voters now have a keener sense of what the state can do and of the importance of the state engaging in a redistributive effort and in providing public services,” she said.

“That shapes these elections, and clearly the left can speak more directly to that than the right.”

Rio cancels its Carnival street parties

W

hile Rio de Janeiro’s renowned Carnival parade will go on, the city will cancel its street parties, the mayor said Tuesday, to the dismay of millions of revelers who pour into the city’s public spaces every year to celebrate and wash away any sorrows in samba, sweat and beer.

The freewheeling public parties “won’t be possible,” Mayor Eduardo Paes said at a news conference Tuesday. “It’s been decided: There won’t be street Carnival in the tradition of the past.”

Paes said the official parade, in which samba groups put on elaborately choreographed shows in an area flanked by bleachers

that seat 56,000 people, would be held, but with some health precautions.

But Cariocas, as Rio residents are known, were devastated.

“I was very excited, very hopeful, for the 2022 Carnival, even more so after a year without Carnival,” said João Victor Ramos, 26.

Ramos, a designer, said that as soon as he read the news on his phone, he shared it with friends, who were already having a good time deciding what costumes to wear.

“It poured cold water on us, everyone was so sad,” he said, before adding reluctantly that the decision was understandable, as the effect of year-end celebrations on Brazil’s coronavirus caseload was already noticeable. The number of cases is ticking up again, after plunging for months.

Many in the city had begun cautiously rehearsing for the festivities, planning for the citywide outburst of joy. After two years of a pandemic, they said, it was sorely needed.

“There was a twist that we were not expecting,” said Tatiana Paz, organizer of one of Rio’s hundreds of street performance groups known as “blocos,” which play music and lead throngs of dancers through the streets for days.

“With most Brazilians fully immunized, we thought it was happening. But then the situation worsened again, and there is nothing we can do about it.”

Other major cities such as Olinda, São Luís and Florianópolis have also canceled their Carnival events in the last 24 hours.

Rio canceled both the parade and the street parties in 2021, when Brazil’s death toll surged as its vaccination campaign was off to a slow start. But toward the end of the year, as shots became more widely available, Brazilians embraced them: About 68% of the country’s population is fully vaccinated, and the country’s caseload and death toll plunged.

The period of relative calm that followed allowed the population to begin socializing again. Streets, beaches and bars became packed as summer set in. On Copacabana Beach, many welcomed the New Year under a sky filled with fireworks — though without the usual concerts that go along with the celebration.

However, infections started rising again as the highly transmissible omicron variant, which in some cases can infect even vaccinated people, spread around the world. Average daily reports of new virus cases in Brazil have surged again in the past few days, although the numbers remain far below the peaks reached in May and July.

Rodrigo Rezende, who is the head of a group of blocos, said they had already been

applying for official permits when the bad news came through.

“We were getting ready,” he said, “but were very aware that it could eventually not happen.”

Paes suffered a backlash for his decision, with many criticizing his choice to keep the costly Carnival parade, which is broadcast on television nationwide, while canceling the free, public celebrations in the streets.

The decision “favors the industry, and it excludes the regular people,” said Nyandra Fernandes, one of the dancers of the Tambores de Olokun bloco.

The mayor responded on Twitter, brushing off allegations that his decision was elitist: “With all due respect to couch analysts and progressives,” he wrote, “the poor and the humble” are strongly represented in the official parade.

“They are the creators of this incredible cultural manifestation,” he said.

Rio’s annual Carnival, considered to be one of the largest in the world, takes place in the weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday, the Western Christian holy day that marks the start of Lent. Ash Wednesday falls on March 2 this year.

The city’s tradition, with its lively music and elaborate costumes, has endured and often thrived even in difficult times. Brazilians have danced through wars, hyperinflation, repressive military rule, runaway street violence and the 1918-19 influenza pandemic. Official calls to postpone Carnival in Brazil in 1892 (for sanitation reasons) and in 1912 (to mourn the death of a national hero) were largely ignored.

Conversely, this year’s Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans appear to be moving forward after the event was canceled in 2021 because of the pandemic.

Revolt in Kazakhstan: What’s happening, and why it matters

hat is happening in Kazakhstan and why?

Thousands of angry protesters have taken to the streets of Kazakhstan in recent days, the biggest crisis to shake the autocratic country in decades. The events are a stark challenge to President KassymJomart Tokayev less than three years into his rule and are destabilizing an already volatile region where Russia and the United States compete for influence.

Video posted online Wednesday showed people storming the main government building in Almaty, the largest city, while protesters set police vehicles on fire, as well as the regional branch of the governing Nur Otan party.

The protests, which have prompted the Kazakh government to seek help from a Russia-led military alliance, have taken a violent turn, with the police saying Thursday that dozens of demonstrators had been killed.

The protests were sparked by anger over surging fuel prices. But they have intensified into something more significant and combustible: widespread discontent about the suffocating authoritarian government and a sharp critique of endemic corruption that has resulted in wealth being concentrated within a small political and economic elite.

What do the protesters want?

As the protests have intensified, the demands of the demonstrators have expanded in scope from demanding lower fuel prices to include a broader political liberalization. Among the changes they seek is the direct election of Kazakhstan’s regional leaders, rather than the current system of presidential appointments.

In short, they are demanding the ouster of the political forces that have ruled the country without any substantial opposition since it achieved independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Why does unrest in Kazakhstan matter to the region and the world?

Sandwiched between Russia and China, Kazakhstan is the world’s largest landlocked country, bigger than the whole of Western Europe, although with a population of just 19 million.

The latest demonstrations matter be-

cause the country has been regarded until now as a pillar of political and economic stability in an unstable region, even as that stability has come at the price of a repressive government that stifles dissent.

The protests are also significant as Kazakhstan has been aligned with Russia, whose president, Vladimir Putin, views the country — a body double of sorts for Russia in terms of its economic and political systems — as part of Russia’s sphere of influence.

For the Kremlin, the events represent another possible challenge to autocratic power in a neighboring country. This is the third uprising against an authoritarian, Kremlin-aligned nation, after pro-democracy protests in Ukraine in 2014 and in Belarus in 2020. The chaos threatens to undermine Moscow’s sway in the region at a time when Russia is trying to assert its economic and geopolitical power in countries like Ukraine and Belarus.

The countries of the former Soviet Union are also watching the protests closely, and the events in Kazakhstan could help energize opposition forces elsewhere.

Kazakhstan also matters to the United States, as it has become a significant country for U.S. energy concerns, with Exxon Mobil and Chevron having invested tens of billions of dollars in western Kazakh-

stan, the region where the unrest began this month.

Although it has close ties with Moscow, consecutive Kazakh governments have also maintained close links to the United States, with oil investment seen as a counterweight to Russian influence. The U.S. government has long been less critical of post-Soviet authoritarianism in Kazakhstan than in Russia and Belarus.

How has the government responded to the protests?

The government has tried to quell the demonstrations by instituting a state of emergency and blocking social networking sites and chat apps, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram and, for the first time, the Chinese app WeChat. Public protests without permits were already illegal. The government has also conceded to a few of the demonstrators’ demands, dismissing the Cabinet and announcing the possible dissolution of Parliament, which would result in new elections. But its moves have so far failed to tame discontent.

Who are the main political players in the country?

Less than three years ago, Kazakhstan’s aging president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, now 81, resigned. A former steelworker and Communist Party leader, he rose to power in Kazakhstan in 1989, when

it was still part of the Soviet Union. During his rule, he attracted enormous investments from foreign energy companies to develop the nation’s oil reserves, which, at an estimated 30 billion barrels, are among the largest of all the former Soviet republics.

The last surviving president in Central Asia to have steered his country to independence after the Soviet Union collapsed, he handed power in 2019 to Tokayev, then speaker of the upper house of the Parliament and a former prime minister and foreign minister.

Tokayev is widely perceived as the hand-picked successor of Nazarbayev, who until recently was thought to wield considerable power, holding the title “Leader of the Nation” and serving as chair of the country’s Security Council. But the revolt could be a decisive break with his rule.

Is Kazakhstan a democracy?

During his three-decade rule, Nazarbayev won repeated elections with nearly 100% of the vote each time, often jailing political opponents or journalists who criticized him. Kazakhstan elected Tokayev in June 2019 but with lopsided election results in a tightly controlled vote marred by hundreds of detentions of demonstrators.

The election was denounced as unfair by observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The result and the heavy-handed police action against peaceful protesters at the time suggested that while the country’s veteran leader had relinquished the presidency, the system he established during his long rule remained firmly in place.

The meaning of Apple at $3 trillion

3,000,000,000,000.

That was (briefly) the total value of Apple’s stock Monday. It was worth a piddly $2.93 trillion as of Wednesday morning — still a bonkers number that no company has reached before.

The milestone is a useful moment to dig into the identity of Apple and the rest of America’s technology titans. Big Tech companies are smart at making products and even smarter at making money. That is a big reason Apple is worth so much.

What is Apple’s superpower? With clever tweaks and desirable new products, it has extended the life of its iPhone empire well beyond when it might have declined. What should have been Apple’s weakness — its dependence on the iPhone, at a time when smartphones are no longer selling like hotcakes — instead has been a source of strength.

Like knowing that Google and Facebook are rich from selling advertisements for socks and hotel stays, understanding the nuts and bolts behind Apple’s power helps demystify the technology titans that have grabbed both our awe and derision.

I will confess that I was wrong about Apple. Six years ago, I wrote a column for Bloomberg Opinion — the first of many like it — that said Apple was hitting a wall.

Since then, Apple’s sales have increased by more than $132 billion, or about triple the amount that Tesla’s sales have grown since 2015. Apple’s profits are unreal, and we are probably paying too much for their $19 cleaning rags.

I still think I am right about Apple, but I am just not

right yet. (You might describe this as being wrong. I will not argue.) The facts remain: The company’s principal product, smartphones, have shifted from wow to normal, and people are not buying new ones as often as they used to.

In 2015, about 1.4 billion new smartphones were sold worldwide. In 2021, the research firm IDC estimated total sales at … about 1.4 billion. The chunk of those that are iPhones — about 1 in 7 — has not budged much, either.

There are exceptions to this sales flatline trend, including last year when a burst of new iPhones sold.

But mostly, this is what smartphones are now: a wonderful and essential product that people do not buy very often, like fridges, cars and TV sets. In theory, our buying fewer phones should be bad for Apple. Instead, Apple has done great because it is extremely clever at making money and has persuaded customers that they should buy what it sells.

Apple has figured out ways to sell far more types of iPhones than it did before, including ultraexpensive ones.

It has mastered underappreciated details like self-designed computer chips and nudges iPhone buyers to pay more for add-ons like extra space to stow photos. And the company keeps coming up with new ways to make money from stuff that makes iPhones more useful, including subscriptions for dating apps, AirPods headphones and computerized watches.

This is not Apple shifting away from its identity as the iPhone company. It is leaning further into its iPhone dependence. I would say that it will be tough for Apple to keep doing this, but smartphone sales have been meh

for six years and Apple is doing great.

None of that completely explains Apple’s march to $3 trillion.

Money does not make sense right now, honestly. And the Big Tech companies typically churn out consistent and steadily increasing profits that stock buyers are willing to pay for.

There is also enthusiasm about Apple launching its first products in face computers and driverless cars that could, like the iPhone did, make other companies follow its lead and make Apple even richer.

Apple’s struggles with smart software — have you yelled at Siri recently for being clueless? — suggest that it will not be a cake walk for the company to keep winning in a metaverse and artificial intelligence future.

That is not a prediction, though. I am done making Apple predictions.

AYAMÓN – En diciembre pasado, un total de 25 estudiantes de la Escuela Primaria Epifanio Fernández Vanga y la Escuela Intermedia Mariano Feliú Balseiro en Bayamón se graduaron del programa escolar Project LEAD en una ceremonia celebrada en el Tribunal de Distrito de los Estados Unidos para el Distrito de Puerto Rico.

El fiscal de los Estados Unidos para el Distrito de Puerto Rico, William Stephen Muldrow, declaró: “Estamos muy orgullosos de continuar con este programa a pesar de las limitaciones impuestas durante la pandemia. Estamos agradecidos por las escuelas y los padres que confiaron en el personal de la USAO junto con otras agencias policiales estatales y federales, así como organizaciones sin fines de lucro, para brindarles a los estudiantes las habilidades y la experiencia para evaluar situaciones desafiantes y ayudarlos a tomar buenas decisiones. ” En agosto de 2021, la Fiscalía de los Estados Unidos para el Distrito de Puerto Rico inició un plan de estudios escolar de 20 semanas en ambas escuelas.

The devils you know: Three ‘Spider-Man’ villains return in ‘No Way Home’

hey were very good at being bad.

At the dawn of the “Spider-Man” film franchise in 2002, Willem Dafoe, the acclaimed actor of movies like “Shadow of the Vampire” and “The Last Temptation of Christ,” inaugurated the superhero series with a credible, formidable villain, Norman Osborn — otherwise known as the Green Goblin.

Two years later, Alfred Molina, the distinguished star of film (“Frida,” “Boogie Nights”) and theater (“Art”), donned the mechanical tentacles of the nefarious Otto Octavius — aka Doctor Octopus — for a sequel, “SpiderMan 2.”

Another decade and another iteration of the franchise went by, and the mantle of eminent evildoer was passed to Jamie Foxx, an Academy Award winner for “Ray,” who played Max Dillon and his high-voltage alter ego, Electro, in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

Each reset — not to mention the fact that some of the characters died in their films — seemed to preclude the possibility that these actors and the bad guys they played could ever meet up in a single film.

But that comic book fantasy became cinematic reality in the current blockbuster “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” in which an errant spell cast by Doctor Strange brings Osborn, Octavius and Dillon into a dimension where Tom Holland wears the Spidey suit. (Oh, yeah, the movie also unites Holland and his “Spider-Man” predecessors, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield — blah, blah, blah.)

For Dafoe, Molina and Foxx, “No Way Home” allowed them to share (or steal) trade secrets. The movie also gave their bad guys the opportunity to try out being good guys; as Molina explained, “All the villains got a chance to not just redeem ourselves but find a deeper, more nuanced level to fill out our characters and make them richer.”

In individual interviews, the actors talked about being recruited to the “Spider-Man” franchise, returning for “No Way Home,” and the process and pleasures of doing their dirty deeds. These are edited excerpts from those conversations.

Q: What do you remember about first being offered your role in the “Spider-Man” series? What was different about superhero movies at the time?

DAFOE: They offered the Goblin/Norman Osborn part to many people before they arrived at me. I was shooting a film in Spain [“The Reckoning”], and they sent the casting director to Spain, and we shot a little audition in my hotel room. It wasn’t business as usual. But it was something I was very interested in doing, and I had a good feeling for Sam Raimi [who directed the original “Spider-Man” movies]. Of course, some people, at that

MOLINA: These movies have become very specific and almost forensic in the way they’re made. They have to appeal to all kinds of quadrants. On Sam Raimi’s film, I found the best way to handle the enormity of the event was to remember that as an actor, you’re a small cog in a much, much larger machine. You don’t spend a great deal of time exploring character or motivations, particularly if you’re playing a villain. But for me, that’s part of the joy of it — of turning a moment into, hopefully, a fun piece of storytelling.

FOXX: All I can tell you is that my kids finally thought I was cool. “OK, we get all that other stuff you’ve been doing. But what? You’re going to go where? Are you kidding me?” They just loved Andrew Garfield. I was so jazzed to be able to be a kid myself. Watching the “Spider-Man” television show, back in the day, when his web

was like a shoestring or whatever, and then to be part of this huge, huge world, it was just mind-blowing.

Q: After your movies, did you ever feel pangs of disappointment to see the “Spider-Man” franchise continue without you?

DAFOE: Even in the second and third installments [of the Raimi films], having me do little cameos, it was a pleasure to just see everyone again and stick my toe in the pool. But I didn’t have the imagination of continuing on.

MOLINA: I just walked away from my movie thinking, well, that was fun. I really had a great time. But I never thought, oh, God, I wish they’d bring him back.

I never had any kind of hankering to do it again. When your character dies, you go, that’s it.

FOXX: You can never look at it that way. If you look at the disappointments of what could have been, you can never do this business.

Q: How were you approached about “No Way Home,” and how much did you know about the other actors who were participating in it?

DAFOE: When Amy Pascal [a “Spider-Man” producer] and Jon Watts [the director of “No Way Home”] called me up and said, “We’d like to pitch you this idea,” I thought, this is crazy. But let’s see what they have to say.

I really didn’t want to do a cameo. I wanted to make sure there was something substantial enough to do that wasn’t just a tip of the hat. And the other thing was, I said I really want there to be action; I want to take part in action scenes. Because that’s really fun for me. It’s the only way to root the character. Otherwise, it just becomes a series of memes.

MOLINA: When I got asked to come in for a meeting with Amy and Jon, I actually thought it was for a completely different project, maybe to play another villain or maybe an interview for some retrospective documentary.

As the years had gone by, I thought, they may well bring Doc Ock back. But I never thought they’d bring him back with me. I was witness to my body changing, things moving. I walked in completely innocent. Like everyone else, I didn’t know the full extent of where the film was going.

I didn’t get to read a whole script; I just saw the pages pertinent to me.

FOXX: They were able to keep the mystique alive in a world where mystique doesn’t exist, anywhere. There’s Instagram posts, and it’s about how many likes you get.

Imagine if Picasso was screenshotting everything; everybody could see it, like, “Eh, I don’t want to buy that painting.” They kept everything under wraps, and we all bought into something.

Q: Did anything change about how you played your characters in the new film?

DAFOE: I must be honest, I am aware that there was some criticism of that [Green Goblin] mask in the

The San Juan Daily Star original one. We heard it enough that it was probably a consideration to change it up a little bit. I don’t think about that because I don’t think about emoting with my face. My face follows my heart. It’s just an expression of what you’re feeling.

MOLINA: In my original film, the tentacles — I almost said my tentacles — they were mechanical. They were played by puppeteers who gave them personality.

We were like a gang; I dubbed us the Octourage. But this time around, the technology is so much more advanced that the tentacles were computer-generated and I was on my own. That was a whole other way of looking at it.

FOXX: There was a character I played in “Baby Driver”; his name was Bats. He got killed off, but this was an opportunity to let Bats a little bit in on Electro. He wasn’t like, I want to [expletive] everybody up — I just want to get mine. Everybody flying through the air, looking good, got girlfriends. That now becomes the mantra of Electro.

Q: Had you previously met the actors who play your fellow villains? What was it like encountering them on “No Way Home”?

DAFOE: [Alfred and I] started at about the same time, so I was aware of his work and I’d see him through the years, so it was fun to see him and hear his stories.

He’s got a million of them. And it was really fun to work with Jamie, because I’ve loved him ever since “In Living Color.” He’s a supremely sweet and energetic guy.

The Green Goblin — and that mask — in the first “Spider-Man.” MOLINA: Willem and I met each other briefly on the set of Sam’s movie. They brought me to watch Willem doing a scene as Doc Ock, just a little practical joke, which was delightful. For me, Green Goblin is the absolute zenith of supervillains, and he plays him with such relish. For my money, he’s the top man.

FOXX: Alfred is the funniest guy on the planet. But then, the first time I saw Willem, I said, I’ve got to bow seven times, bro. He said, [bashful Willem Dafoe voice] “Ah, Jamie, you’re so nice. Thank you so much, Jamie.”

I said, no, bro, you’re going to get these seven bows. I would just watch these guys work, and even small things that they would do, I’d say, ooh, I’mma steal that.

Q: Your characters in “No Way Home” each have ample opportunity to be very bad and the chance to turn good. Which side do you prefer?

DAFOE: Whenever you play a role, it is you and it isn’t you. If you’re going to play one of these archvillains, it’s the most natural thing in the world to cultivate the opposite of what they lead with. You develop a vulnerability and an insecurity against the confidence of the aggression. We all have that little devil on one shoulder and that little angel on the other shoulder. I remember as a kid seeing cartoons with that image. God knows it stayed with me.

MOLINA: They’re two very different things, but in

a way they belong to each other. Whatever element in Doc Ock that is villainous is made more villainous in the minds of the audience because of their knowledge of his goodness. And at the same time, his return to decency is even more poignant because of what we know he’s capable of doing and has done.

FOXX: Oh, it’s always great to be bad, bro. What makes the superheroes super is how bad the villains can be.

Q: If any of the characters you’ve previously played could appear in the same movie, who would you want to see team up?

DAFOE: Once you finish something, you’ve got to make room for the next thing. So I don’t have much of an imagination for that kind of thing. Maybe I’m a little simpler. One at a time, one at a time.

MOLINA: Just off the top of my head, I think it might be cool if Doc Ock met up with Diego Rivera [from “Frida”] and lent him the tentacles so he could finish off all those glorious murals. He could get so much work done.

He could be working on four or five canvases at the same time.

FOXX: Oh, man, Django [from “Django Unchained”], Willie Beamen [from “Any Given Sunday”] and Electro would be crazy. If they could share, they’d be like, yo, I need a little bit of that electricity over here.

2022 is full of first steps to the moon

obotic missions to Mars and advances in space tourism dominated the space activities of 2021. But this year, the moon is likely to stand out, as companies and governments launch various moonbound spacecraft.

Most of those missions revolve around Artemis, NASA’s multibilliondollar effort to return astronauts to the moon later in the decade and conduct routine science missions on its surface in preparation for farther treks to Mars (a far more ambitious endeavor that will probably not happen in this decade). But before astronauts make the moonshot, a series of rocket tests and science missions without humans will need to be completed.

2022 is the year for those initial steps toward the moon. Two new rockets central to NASA’s lunar plans will launch to space for the first time, each with more power than the Saturn 5 rocket from the Apollo program. And other countries are expected to join the march to the moon as well.

NASA’s gigantic moon rocket debut After years of development delays, NASA’s Space Launch System, or SLS, could make its first journey to space — without any humans — as early as March.

The mission, called Artemis 1, will mark the first in a series of flights under NASA’s Artemis program by SLS, NASA’s centerpiece rocket system for getting moonbound astronauts off Earth. For Artemis 1, SLS will launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to send a capsule named Orion around the moon and back, rehearsing a trajectory that will be performed by Artemis 2, the subsequent mission that is scheduled to carry astronauts sometime in 2024. The third mission, Artemis 3, will result in a moon landing.

Like any major space mission, Artemis 1 has been delayed several times.

It was initially planned for 2020, then pushed to various times throughout 2021 because of development challenges and setbacks caused by the pandemic. NASA blames the most recent delay to March on the need to investigate and replace a faulty internal computer controlling one of the rocket’s four main engines.

SpaceX’s next starship test Central to NASA’s efforts to return humans to the moon is SpaceX’s Starship, which will be used as a human lunar lander in roughly 2025. It will be the agency’s first astronaut mission to the moon’s surface since 1972. Designed as a fully reusable rocket system, Starship also stands at the center of Elon Musk’s ultimate goal of ferrying humans to Mars and will be crucial to SpaceX’s revenuegenerating satellite launch business.

But first, Starship must reach orbit.

That test flight, also with no people on board, could happen sometime in mid2022.

Musk, SpaceX’s CEO, had hoped to launch Starship to orbit in 2021. But a protracted Federal Aviation Administration review of the environmental impact of SpaceX’s launch site in Texas and development delays with the company’s new Raptor engines have postponed the test flight. The FAA review is expected to finish in late February and determine whether deeper environmental reviews will be necessary, or whether SpaceX can resume Starship launches.

A successful orbital test will be a key step in NASA’s moon program. Astronauts launching atop the SLS inside the Orion capsule will rendezvous with and transfer

to Starship above the moon to descend the rest of the way to the lunar surface.

Starship would later liftoff from the moon, then transfer the astronauts back to Orion for the journey home to Earth.

NASA-funded moon robots Three robotic moon landers under a NASA program are scheduled to make their way to the lunar surface this year — if development goes as planned.

Intuitive Machines, a Houstonbased company, and Astrobotic, based in Pittsburgh, are each aiming to send small lunar landers carrying various scientific payloads to the moon by the end of this year. Their landers were developed under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program — part of the agency’s effort to rely on private companies for sending cargo and research instruments into space with the hopes of stimulating a commercial market.

Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C lander, a six-legged cylindrical robot, is expected to launch on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket early this year carrying a dozen payloads to the lunar surface. One of the instruments on board will measure the plume of lunar dirt kicked up during Nova-C’s landing, an experiment that could help engineers prevent messy lunar landings in the future. The lander will also deploy

a small rover built by Spacebit, a British company. In the fourth quarter of this year, the company could also send a second mission to the moon’s surface.

Astrobotic’s Peregrine lander is a boxy, four-legged lander with an onboard propulsion system that will ease itself onto a basaltic plain on the sunlit side of the moon’s northeastern quadrant carrying 14 research payloads. The company says Peregrine will be ready for launch aboard United Launch Alliance’s new Vulcan rocket in the middle of this year.

But whether it launches on time is dependent on when the rocket will be ready to fly. Vulcan’s debut has been held up by the engine supplier for the rocket, which is Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ space company. Its new BE-4 engines have yet to be delivered.

Testing a complex lunar orbit Rocket Lab, which builds rockets for small launches, is poised to send in March a microwave-size satellite, or CubeSat, for NASA called CAPSTONE from the company’s launch site in New Zealand.

The satellite will study an orbit around the moon that a future space station called Gateway, being developed by NASA and other space agencies, will reside in sometime in the next decade.

South Korea’s first moonshot The Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, a box-shaped satellite, will be South Korea’s first foray to the moon as the country aims to bolster its technical know-how for conducting missions in space.

Led by the Seoul’s space agency, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, the spacecraft carrying six main tools is scheduled to launch in August on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and arrive in lunar orbit by December. It will spend a year surveying the moon’s geology and examine from afar the chemical composition of lunar dirt.

The satellite will also carry a Lunar Terrain Imager, which will survey potential landing sites for a subsequent South Korean robotic lunar lander mission.

Even more global visitors Lunar robots from three other countries — Russia, India and Japan — will also try to make their way to the moon this year.

Novak Djokovic is refused entry into Australia over vaccine exemption

ovak Djokovic, the world’s No. 1-ranked men’s tennis player, traveled all day Wednesday from Dubai to Australia, a journey that was supposed to begin his defense of the Australian Open singles championship.

On Thursday, he was told he would need to leave the country, following a 10hour standoff with government officials at a Melbourne Airport, where he was held in a room overnight over the validity of his visa and questions about the evidence supporting a medical exemption from a coronavirus vaccine. The exemption was supposed to allow Djokovic, a 20-time Grand Slam tournament champion and one of the biggest stars in sports, to compete in the Australian Open even though he has not been vaccinated.

Djokovic did not immediately leave the country, and his team filed a legal challenge to the ruling Thursday. A spokesperson for the tennis star did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The chain of events represented a startling turnabout for Djokovic, who in a little more than 24 hours went from receiving special, last-minute permission to play in the Open, to boarding an intercontinental flight, to essentially being told by the prime minister of Australia that he was not welcome in the country.

At one point, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić even got involved, speaking with Djokovic and criticizing the Australian government for its treatment of the country’s biggest sports star.

The pandemic has wreaked all manner of havoc with sports during the past two years. The Tokyo Summer Olympics were postponed for a year. Major events took place in empty stadiums. Star players have been sent into isolation just before their competitions after testing positive for the virus.

The situation involving Djokovic, one of the most polarizing figures in the sport, was a match for any of them. It turned on a confrontation between a sports superstar and the most powerful leader in one of the world’s most prosperous countries, where government officials, citizens, the media and even some fellow players, criticized the exemption, seemingly prompting the sudden shift.

Novak Djokovic’s arrival in Australia on Jan. 5, 2022 was mired in confusion after an airport dispute about the validity of his visa and questions about the evidence supporting the medical exemption he received to play in the 2022 Australian Open.

The decision promises to become another flashpoint in the debate about vaccines and how the pandemic should be managed now, especially in Australia, where egalitarianism is considered a sacred principle — and where “the tennis,” as the Open is called, is also beloved by what often seems like an entire nation of sports fanatics.

In a statement Thursday, the Australian Border Force pledged to “continue to ensure that those who arrive at our border comply with our laws and entry requirements. The ABF can confirm that Mr. Djokovic failed to provide appropriate evidence to meet the entry requirements to Australia, and his visa has been subsequently canceled.”

On Tuesday, Djokovic announced on Twitter that he had received a medical exemption from the requirement that all people entering the country be vaccinated or quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. He later boarded a plane bound for Australia from Dubai.

In a statement later that day, Craig Tiley, the chief executive of Tennis Australia, explained that players seeking an exemption had to pass muster with two panels of medical experts. The process included the

redaction of personal information to ensure privacy.

“Fair and independent protocols were established for assessing medical exemption applications that will enable us to ensure Australian Open 2022 is safe and enjoyable for everyone,” Tiley said. “Central to this process was that the decisions were made by independent medical experts and that every applicant was given due consideration.”

Tiley said Wednesday in a television interview that 26 players had applied for an exemption and “a handful” had been granted. According to Tiley, 99% of the more than 3,000 people coming to Australia for the tournament were vaccinated. The handful who were granted an exemption either had a medical condition or had COVID-19 during the past six months, though Australian health officials said late last year that a recent infection would not necessarily be enough to gain entry.

Tennis Australia said Djokovic’s exemption was granted in part by an independent panel appointed by the Victoria Department of Health.

Djokovic landed at Melbourne’s Tulla-

marine Airport around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. By then, he had become the central figure in a firestorm over how he had received permission to enter Australia, which is experiencing a startling rise in COVID-19 cases.

The country has waged one of the most successful battles against COVID-19, but it has come at a steep price. Strict lockdowns have lasted for months. International borders were largely closed until recently.

Inbound travelers had to adhere to an expensive, two-week quarantine upon arrival.

For long periods, even domestic travel between states was also prohibited. The country has experienced only 2,200 deaths, but since opening its borders late last year, it is now dealing with more than 30,000 cases a day.

As Djokovic flew to Melbourne, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison invoked the government’s authority to deny entry to Djokovic.

“Any individual seeking to enter Australia must comply with our border requirements,” Morrison said.

“We await his presentation and what evidence he provides us to support that,” Morrison added. “If that evidence is insufficient, then he won’t be treated any different to anyone else and he’ll be on the next plane home. There should be no special rules for Novak Djokovic at all. None whatsoever.”

Also Wednesday, Jaala Pulford, the acting sports minister for the state of Victoria, which contains Melbourne, where the Open is held, said the state government would not support Djokovic’s application for a visa. Pulford wrote on Twitter that “visa approvals are a matter for the federal government.”

Her statement followed the comments of Australia’s minister for home affairs, Karen Andrews, who had released a statement that noted the government had the authority to block Djokovic from entering the country.

In a statement headlined “Australia’s Border Rules Apply to Everyone,” Andrews said that “while the Victorian Government and Tennis Australia may permit a non-vaccinated player to compete in the Australian Open, it is the Commonwealth Government that will enforce our requirements at the Australian border.”

“No individual competing at the Australian Open will be afforded any special treatment,” Andrews said.

Pioneering Puerto Rican swimmer Ann Lallande dies at 72

nn Lucile “Anita” Lallande, who as a 15-year-old represented Puerto Rico in swimming at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, and two years later won 10 gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in San Juan, died on Dec. 19.

According to an obituary in The Washington Post, Lallande, 72, died from complications following surgery to repair a broken leg.

Born on June 24, 1949 in San Juan to Joseph Gustave Lallande and Janice Hoover Lallande, Ann Lallande began swimming at age 8 at the Caparra Country Club, according to her Wikipedia page.

At 13 she won five medals (two silver and three bronze) at the 1962 CACs in Kingston, Jamaica. Two years later, and a year after competing in her first Pan American Games, Lallande and Margaret Hard-

ing represented Puerto Rico at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming the island’s first Olympic swimmers.

most medals won by a Puerto Rican swimmer at the CACs, with 17. At the 1966 CACs in San Juan, she collected 12 medals -- 10 gold, a silver and a bronze. She won four gold medals in individual freestyle -at 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters -- two more in the butterfly (100 and 200 meters) and another two in the backstroke (100 and 200 meters). She picked up two more golds, a silver and a bronze in relay events.

It was that dominant performance in particular that earned Lallande the nickname “La Lancha” (the motorboat).

After the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she earned a bronze medal in the 400-meter free relay, Lallande retired from athletic competition. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Marymount College in Tarrytown N.Y. before returning to Puerto Rico for a brief stint as a junior high school teacher in Condado.

After two years Lallande left the is-

land permanently to pursue a career in journalism (as a staffer and freelancer), first in New York City and later in Alexandria, Va., where she and her husband, Robert C. Giffen III, a naval officer, started a family.

Lallande served for a time as a consultant to Carlos Romero Barceló, Puerto Rico’s resident commissioner to the U.S. Congress from 1993 to 2001.

By that time she and her husband and two children had settled in Annapolis, Md., where Lallande was a longtime volunteer through her local Episcopal church and also taught citizen-preparation courses for Spanish-speaking adults at night. She was known as a spontaneous and passionate donor to victims -- both human and animal -- of natural disasters, according to her obituary.

Lallande is survived by her husband of 41 years, children Kyle and Nicole, three grandchildren and one sister.

Irving returns after refusing to be vaccinated

ers on Wednesday night following the team’s surprise reversal of its policy to bar him from practices and road games until he received the coronavirus vaccine.

Irving looked rusty early on against the Pacers, missing his first three shots.

But in the second quarter in Indianapolis, he began to heat up and scored 8 straight points.

Irving declined to be vaccinated for COVID-19 before the season, making him ineligible to play in New York City because of a local vaccine mandate at sports arenas that went into effect in September. The Nets, citing concerns about team chemistry, announced in October that Irving would not be permitted to play in road games either, even if laws in those cities would allow him to participate. The NBA does not require players to be vaccinated.

For the most part, the team has played well in Irving’s absence, and has led the Eastern Conference for much of the season. Following Wednesday’s 129121 win over the Pacers, the Nets were No. 2 in the East, behind Chicago, with a 24-12 record.

But last month, as the omicron variant of the coronavirus began ravag-

ing NBA rosters, the Nets announced they would let Irving play in road games.

Sean Marks, the team’s general manager, said at the time that the Nets were “faced with a roster that has been decimated over the course of the last several days.” Several of the Nets’ top players, including Kevin Durant and James Harden, have missed games because of the league’s virus-related health and safety protocols.

Irving was immediately placed into the protocols as well. The NBA’s rules say an unvaccinated player can be placed into the protocols because of a positive or inconclusive test, or a confirmed exposure to a person who had tested positive. Players can be cleared to play again through testing and isolation periods that vary according to the players’ symptoms but that can be as short as a few days.

When Irving returned to action Wednesday night, all of the Nets’ roster was available except guard Joe Harris, who is out with an ankle injury.
