ollowing a recent STAR report, University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Carolina Campus Provost José Meza Pereira sought the Academic Senate’s green light to ratify his appointments of several deans made in violation of norms and due process. The UPR Carolina Academic Senate approved his request, which the STAR learned was criticized by at least one member, who noted that the request did not proceed further because the appointments were illegal. UPR governing board member Herman Cestero told the STAR he would be bringing the matter to the board’s attention. Meza Pereira’s actions have occurred under the noses of the UPR governing board and its president, in what sources have described as yet another example of the governing board’s inadequate supervision of campuses. While the UPR president is an ex-officio member of each of the 11 campuses’ academic senates, a sitting president has not shown up at those meetings in years, the sources close to UPR Carolina said. Because of the disconnect between the governing board and the campuses, Meza Pereria appointed deans to the different departments without consulting the UPR Carolina Academic Senate. UPR regulations state that when there is a vacancy for a dean position, the provost in 60 days must inform the academic senate or the faculty, or department in question of the vacancy. If a dean does not head a specific department, then the notification must be made to the academic senate, which has 30 days to appoint a consultation committee. The provosts must also seek the approval of the governing board and the UPR president for the appointment of all deans. The governing board has 60 days to approve the appointment. In the 15 months that Meza Pereira has been provost at UPR Carolina, he has appointed six deans using the mechanism and without consulting. “In all cases, he sends an email to the staff on the same day he makes the appointment, which sometimes is made retroactively. At the same time, he has never officially informed the academic senate of the vacancies of the positions for dean,” a source said. “He has never asked the academic senate for a consultation committee nor has he ever asked for a consultation committee for non-teaching staff impacted by the appointment of the deans.” The sources backed their claims with documents. One of the situations that has alarmed the Carolina campus is the
appointment of Gregory Bermúdez Rivera as interim dean of administrative affairs. Bermúdez Rivera was appointed for the period running from July 7, 2020 to Aug. 31, 2020. Nonetheless, after the one-month period finished, Meza Pereira allowed Bermúdez Rivera to remain in the position for more than a year “in a clandestine and illegitimate manner.” While Bermúdez Rivera has been working in the university system for over 20 years, he does not have a formal college degree needed to occupy the position. The letter written by Meza Pereira, a copy of which was obtained by the STAR, merely states that his 24-year experience in different positions qualifies him for the job. The appointment, the sources said, is also illegal because the rules state that after 30 days, all interim appointments must go before the UPR governing board. Meza Pereira also appointed Jonathan Ramos Scharrón, a professor, as interim dean of the Hotel and Restaurant Administration School; José Ayala, an assistant professor, as interim dean of academic affairs; and Ana Rivera Soto, who was interim registrar, as interim dean of student affairs. Ayala replaced Rafael Méndez, a natural sciences professor and department director, who had also been appointed in an interim fashion without the consultation of the academic senate. Soto replaced Alexy M. Márquez, who was only on the job from February to September of this year. None of those appointments have been taken to the UPR Carolina academic senate, according to documents obtained by the STAR.
A UPR governing board member said he would be bringing the matter to the board’s attention.

NPP will attend status dialogues as statehood efforts continue By THE STAR STAFF
N
ew Progressive Party (NPP) Sen. Thomas Rivera Schatz informed Senate President José Luis Dalmau Santiago on Monday that although his party will appear as part of the planned Dialogue Table to discuss Puerto Rico status alternatives, the NPP will continue to lobby for statehood in Washington, D.C. Sectors within the NPP consider the party’s decision to participate in the Dialogue Table to be treason. They said a majority of voters in a referendum last year selected statehood as a status option. In May of this year the NPP held an election to select shadow delegates to lobby for statehood. For instance, pro-statehood advocate Miriam Ramirez de Ferrer has criticized members of Congress who have refused to sign Puerto Rico’s admission request. She also said individuals should pursue statehood and not depend on the NPP or delegates. Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia said he will continue to pursue statehood but is allowing Rivera Schatz to show up for the talks. In a letter addressed to Dalmau Santiago, Rivera Schatz said the Dialogue Table should include the presidents of the Republican and Democratic parties on the island. Dalmau Santiago invited the presidents of the various political parties on the island to establish a Dialogue Table and on Sunday indicated that all the presidents had
Sen. Thomas Rivera Schatz agreed to show up. “About the Dialogue Table to which you have invited the political leadership to discuss the issue of Puerto Rico’s
status, I suggest you include the local presidents of the national parties, Democrat and Republican,” Rivera Schatz wrote in the letter.
LUMA ordered to prepare plan for EV charging system By JOHN McPHAUL jpmcphaul@gmail.com
P
uerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) Chairman Edison Avilés Deliz announced on Monday that LUMA Energy was ordered by resolution to present the first phase of its plan for the distribution of energy for electric vehicles (EV) on the island. “This resolution is the result of the effort and input of the different sectors related to the industry,” Avilés Deliz said in a written statement. “It is a combination on par with any private sector management, since the current legal framework allows it; even long before this novel alternative became a matter of public discussion.” As part of its preparation, the regulatory entity this year requested and has received the comments of Cambio PR, the Electrician Experts Association, the Independent Puerto Rico Energy Bureau Chairman Edison Avilés Deliz Office for Consumer Protection, the energy public policy program of the Department of Economic Development efficient alternative or renewable energy systems. Planning for the aforementioned implementation, and Commerce, Mr. Ángel Rodríguez and Tesla Inc. In addition to outlining its jurisdiction on the matter, Avilés Deliz said, has been developed, “in constant the PREB emphasizes, as part of its determination, the dialogue to ensure compliance with Article 3 of Law importance and need to implement an energy system 33 of 2019, which expressly includes the electrification with a low dependence on oil and the eradication of of motor vehicles.” The document, having highlighted the generation of coal-based energy, promoting more the relevance of the workshop held on the subject last
September, establishes that in January and February the second and third workshops will be held, aimed at discussing both the criteria to be considered as priorities in the strengthening and development of infrastructure and in the optimal use of the pilot programs, respectively. Among the main guidelines established by the PREB to LUMA Energy for the preparation of its plan, are from the obligation to consider the behavior, present and future, of the consumer, the deployment of the necessary infrastructure and technology in accordance with the demand and other elements of the market, and the locations and costs most appropriate to the network available over time in each geographic region of Puerto Rico. Likewise, LUMA must submit, on or before May 31, 2022, its proposal to configure a rate process that encourages recharging outside peak hours and that addresses different aspects and trends related to the diversity of uses for which electricity is offered at the charging point and the growth and desirability of the installation of energy storage systems. LUMA Energy must present the first phase of its plan on or before Sept. 1, 2022, after having participated in three technical compliance hearings scheduled for Feb. 25, May 31 and Aug. 31 of the same year.

In closing argument, fiscal board stresses that POA doesn’t cut public pensions By THE STAR STAFF
T
he Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico provided closing arguments on Monday in hearings seeking to confirm the plan of adjustment (POA) that would restructure some $33 billion in commonwealth debt, emphasizing that the latest version of the debt deal doesn’t cut government employee pension benefits to authorize new bond issuances. The oversight board late Sunday filed yet another version of the eighth amended POA. Before Monday’s hearing, the oversight board filed a motion seeking to change the Government Development Plan Debt Recovery Authority’s votes to reject the plan, to votes accepting it. Judge Laura Taylor Swain, who is overseeing the case, granted the motion. The Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority (AAFAF), meanwhile, filed a motion over the weekend complaining that the oversight board added three laws to the list of laws it wishes to preempt, a move that, the AAFAF said, will allow the board to hinder pension benefits for future retirees. In a statement, the oversight board described the proposed POA as a “historic opportunity” for Puerto Rico to reduce the commonwealth’s outstanding debt by almost 80%, from $33 billion to $7 billion. The POA includes a base contribution to a pension reserve trust of a minimum $175 million a year. If in any given year the certified fiscal plan as of the effective date of the POA projects a primary budget surplus exceeding $1.75 billion, the base contribu-
tion to the pension reserve trust would rise to 50% of that projected surplus. In addition, the government would contribute to the pension reserve trust for 10 years, compared to eight years as contemplated under a previous plan. Judge Swain, however, noted that there are potentially non-dischargeable claims that the plan currently treats as unsecured claims. Swain said Monday that she is not sure what claims will be determined as non-dischargeable as she hasn’t made a final decision. Oversight board attorney Martin Bienenstock, of the law firm Proskauer Rose, said the plan would still be feasible even if there is a ruling that all $400 million of the relevant claims are non-dischargeable. The judge was referring to eminent domain claims that opponents of the POA say are not getting just compensation under the plan. Those individuals, including Finca Matilde, claim the plan violates the Takings Clause. Speaking in support of the plan, Brian Rosen of Proskauer Rose provided background in the case, noting that the court had already scheduled time to consider disclosure statement approval back in March 2020 when the case was then halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rosen said the suspension of the case led to further mediation that garnered more creditors in support of the plan, which resulted in a revised version last February. Rosen argued that the settlements embedded in the POA are acceptable and reasonable taking into account the complexity of litigation and the adverse effects that would occur if they weren’t approved. Meanwhile, the POA met
U.S. District Court Judge Laura Taylor Swain the requirements of a best interest evaluation conducted by McKinsey & Co., an adviser to the oversight board. Michael Mervis, another lawyer with Proskauer Rose, addressed an objection from retail bondholder Peter Hein. He noted that Hein has argued that the plan should not be viewed on an aggregate basis to determine whether it is fair and equitable for creditors. Instead, Hein argues that it should be determined whether treatment is fair individually on a class-by-class basis. The oversight believes the collective test of fairness is the appropriate standard for approval, Mervis said. Further, he said the general obligation (GO) bondholder class Hein is focused on has overwhelmingly accepted the terms of the POA. Hein has argued that GO debt should be paid even before the government’s operating
costs, Rosen noted, but that would mean paying the debt first before paying teachers or firefighters. Rosen rejected Hein’s argument that the fiscal plan budget includes non-essential spending, such as advertising fees, that don’t have to be paid before bondholders. Rosen said that if advertising for tourism is cut, the economy will suffer. Bienenstock then proceeded to discuss that the plan satisfies fair and equitable standards, noting that the pension classes are the most benefited when compared to other creditors. Creditors overall are getting the same recoveries they would get outside the bankruptcy case. The AAFAF, which was represented by Peter Friedman, a lawyer with O’Melveny & Myers, spoke in favor of the plan even though his client maintains that pension cuts are unacceptable. Robert Gordon, a lawyer with Jenner & Block, which represents the Official Committee of Retirees, said the protection of pensions is supported by sound financial policies. Previous versions of the plan called for an 8.5% cut to pensions higher than $1,500 per month. Unsecured creditors committee (UCC) representative Luc Despins, a lawyer with Paul Hastings, said the UCC fully supports the plan. Voters in the class by a majority supported the plan even though not everyone voted. He said no one in the UCC’s class is challenging plan treatment or arguing that the plan doesn’t meet the best interests of creditors test. Opponents of the plan were slated to provide closing arguments at press time.

Amid spike in slayings, police can't ‘divine’ where they’ll happen, top cop says By JOHN McPHAUL jpmcphaul@gmail.com
P
olice Commissioner Antonio López Figueroa said Monday that his police officers “are not fortune tellers” with the ability to predict when one person is going to kill another. “For the 20,000 policemen that I have, it is impossible that there can be a policeman for every situation, because we can’t predict the future,” the island’s top cop said in response to questions from the press. “We are working. We have work plans in the Auxiliary Superintendency and the special units, doing the appropriate work. Is it that this is long term or medium term? Yes. You are not going to see the results now; you are going to see them next year.” Thirteen homicides were recorded over
Police Commissioner Antonio López Figueroa the past weekend, seven of which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, as reported by the Puerto Rico Police Bureau. “All plans have been modified,” López Figueroa said. “We had preventive patrols over the weekend. We have the necessary patrols and we have the investigations running. And the plans are aimed at this, to counteract the murders, to arrest the people who are responsible for them. And we ask citizens for cooperation.” The commissioner said the recent crimes are being committed by organizations that charge for murders. Sometimes there is cooperation on the part of a member of the criminal organization of the person to be killed, to locate the target. “The best example is the video that is being
seen [of the double murder] in Guayama,” the police commissioner said. “That person had just left the court, because his case was suspended. … One of his partners sold him out to kill him on that highway.” Also, what is classified as stalking occurs. “These crimes are the consequence of crime not paying and I’m going to tell you why,” López Figueroa said. “Individuals who are involved in drug trafficking have to be careful every day that their enemies or even friends who might want to take their position don’t kill them.” “They take advantage of these days to show camaraderie and become vulnerable and have people who in the underworld are called ‘setiators’ [stool pigeons], who are people who locate them. That is why these deaths occur at the most vulnerable moment, so that these [targeted] people cannot respond to the attack.”

As Thanksgiving approaches, US virus cases tick upward once more By MITCH SMITH
A
month ago, new coronavirus cases in the United States were ticking steadily downward and the worst of a miserable summer surge fueled by the delta variant appeared to be over. But as Americans travel this week to meet far-flung relatives for Thanksgiving dinner, new virus cases are rising once more, especially in the Upper Midwest and Northeast. Federal medical teams have been dispatched to Minnesota to help at overwhelmed hospitals. Michigan is enduring its worst case surge yet, with daily caseloads doubling since the start of November. Even New England, where vaccination rates are high, is struggling:Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire have tried to contain major outbreaks. Nationally, case levels remain well below those seen in early September, when summer infections peaked, and are below those seen last Thanksgiving. But conditions are worsening rapidly, and this will not be the post-pandemic Thanksgiving that Americans had hoped for. More than 90,000 cases are being reported each day, comparable to early August, and more than 30 states are seeing sustained upticks in infections. In the hardest-hit places, hospitalizations are climbing. “This thing is no longer just throwing curveballs at us — it’s throwing 210-mile-an-hour curveballs at us,” said Michael Osterholm, a public health researcher at the University of Minnesota. He said that the virus had repeatedly defied predictions and continues to do so. The new rise in cases comes at a complicated moment. Last Thanksgiving, before vaccines were available, federal and local officials had firmly urged Americans to forgo holiday gatherings. But in sharp contrast, public health officials, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectiousdisease expert, have mostly suggested this year that vaccinated people could gather in relative safety. In interviews across the country, Americans said they were not sure what to think. Jess Helle-Morrissey, 43, a therapist who lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, said she has decided to host a dinner, although case rates in her state are among the country’s worst. About 4,200 cases are emerging every day and hospitalizations are soaring in Minnesota. “They are diligent maskers and don’t take any extra risks,” she said of her guests. “Everyone who is coming, I keep saying, is, you know, vaxxed to the max.” In important ways, the country is in better shape than during previous upticks. Doctors have learned more about how to treat the virus and experts are hopeful that antiviral pills will soon be approved. Most crucially, many Americans have been vaccinated. The availability of those shots — including the recent approval of booster doses for all adults — has raised confidence for many who said they planned to proceed with holiday celebrations.
But about 50,000 coronavirus patients are hospitalized nationwide, and tens of millions of Americans have declined to be vaccinated. The course of the virus in Europe, where Austria is entering a lockdown and some areas of Germany have shut down Christmas markets, has raised fears about just how high case numbers might rise in the United States. “The last thing I want is what Austria is doing,” said Dr. Allison Arwady, the public health commissioner in Chicago, where cases have started to rise. “I really, really don’t want to go there.” In Austria, about 66% of the population has been fully vaccinated against the virus. In the United States, about 59% of the population has been. Still, millions of Americans were forging ahead with holiday plans. Federal officials expected Thanksgiving air travel to approach pre-pandemic levels. And plenty of people who hit the road this year will be unvaccinated, unmasked and largely unworried about COVID-19. Many experts said the wide availability of vaccines, now authorized for everyone 5 and older, as well as at-home testing, made it possible for vaccinated people to host a relatively safe, although not fully risk-free, gathering. Arwady said she planned to spend the holiday with extended family members, all of whom are vaccinated except young children who are not eligible. While reports of new
cases in Illinois have increased 62% in the past two weeks, she said she wanted vaccinated people to feel confident going about their life and to enjoy Thanksgiving. “Is there the potential for some spread? Of course there is,” said Arwady, who suggested that unvaccinated adults consider staying home. “Are the people who are vaccinated, even if they haven’t gotten a booster, likely to end up in the hospital or die? They’re really not.” Osterholm said he worried about breakthrough cases in vaccinated people who did not have booster shots and about the potential for future mutations of the virus. Still, he too said he would gather for the holiday with vaccinated family members who live nearby. Officials who once urged caution were now deferring to individuals to make their own decisions. “It’s really hard to tell people to stay away from their families,” said Mayor Katie Rosenberg of Wausau, Wisconsin, where cases have surged to their highest levels since late 2020. “I can’t anymore.” Dr. Rebecca Smith, a public health researcher at the University of Illinois, said she planned to travel by vehicle with her children to see family but would get tested before and after. “People want to get back to normal and we understand that — and there are ways to do that safely,” she said.
Coronavirus cases are rising again in parts of the country, but more people are traveling, and health officials have largely stopped telling people to skip celebrations.

Suspect in custody in deadly Wisconsin parade incident
Police collect abandoned items along a parade route in Waukesha, Wis., on Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, after the driver of an SUV plowed into a Christmas parade on Sunday. The police had a person of interest in custody on Monday after the driver of a red SUV barreled through the parade, killing at least five people and injuring more than 40 others. By DAN SIMMONS, MITCH SMITH, ROBERT CHIARITO and GLENN THRUSH
D
arrell E. Brooks, a 39-year-old Milwaukee man, faces five counts of first-degree intentional homicide after authorities said he drove a red SUV into a Christmas parade Sunday, killing at least five adults and injuring more than 40 others, including more than a dozen children. The dead ranged in age from 52 to 81, Dan Thompson, chief of the Waukesha Police Department, told reporters Monday. Brooks steered the SUV through barricades, ignoring the warnings of officers posted to protect the parade, moments after leaving the scene of a domestic disturbance, Thompson said. The incident was not related to terrorism, and Brooks was not being pursued by police at the time, he added. He was captured shortly after speeding away from the scene, according to the chief, who said he was one of the first officers to arrive at the scene. A police officer fired shots at Brooks’ vehicle, but “due to the amount of people” at the parade had to stop. No bystanders were struck, Thompson said. “We have no information that Brooks knew anyone in the parade,” Thompson added.
Brooks had been free on $1,000 bail in an earlier criminal case, in which he was accused of running over the mother of his child in the parking lot of a Milwaukee gas station with his maroon 2010 Ford Escape earlier this month. A spokesman for the district attorney’s office Monday described the state’s bail recommendation in that earlier case as “inappropriately low” in light of the seriousness of the charges and “not consistent” with office policy. “This office is currently conducting an internal review of the decision to make the recent bail recommendation in this matter in order to determine the appropriate next steps,” the statement said. Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, said President Joe Biden was receiving regular updates on the tragedy. “Our team is in close touch with local officials to offer any support and assistance needed,” she said on Twitter. “Our hearts are with the families and the entire community.” It was supposed to have been a celebratory night in Waukesha. Dance groups and high school bands and politicians were marching along Main Street in the Milwaukee suburb’s Christmas parade, which was returning from a pandemic hiatus. Then, just before 4:40 p.m., the driver of a red SUV, said to be a Ford Escape, stormed past barricades and into the crowd, striking dozens. City authorities said in a state-
ment late Sunday that the number of dead and injured could change. Area hospitals reported treating dozens of patients, including many children. It was unclear what might have motivated the episode. “Today our community faced horror and tragedy in what should have been a community celebration,” said Mayor Shawn Reilly, who described seeing smiling children and happy parents when he marched along the parade route earlier Sunday. “I’m deeply saddened to know that so many in our community went to a parade but ended up dealing with injury and heartache.” Officials at Children’s Wisconsin, which treats only pediatric patients, said in a news conference Monday that it had treated 18 who were injured in the parade, including three sets of siblings. Of those 18 children, six are in critical condition, three are in serious condition, seven are in fair condition, and two have been discharged. Another hospital, Aurora Medical Center–Summit, said in a statement that it was treating 13 patients, including three in critical condition. Officials at Froedtert Hospital said Monday they had treated seven patients. This was the 58th Christmas parade for Waukesha, an annual event that was canceled last year because of the pandemic. The theme of this year’s event was “Comfort and Joy.”

For Arbery’s family and friends, a time of anguish and activism By TARIRO MZEZEWA
F
rom the moment that Theawanza Brooks heard the initial account that her family was told about her nephew Ahmaud Arbery’s death, it felt off. The authorities, she said, reported that he had been involved in a burglary and killed after a tussle over a gun. Her own trip to investigate the scene of his death — his blood still visible on the ground — made her only more skeptical. Nearly three months later, when a video became public showing Arbery being chased, cornered and then shot at close range, she felt vindicated and angry — an anger that has persisted nearly two years. Brooks, 37, who works in retail, is among many members of Arbery’s large extended family and circle of friends who have been both griefstricken and galvanized to action since his death in February 2020. Over the past month, as the case against the three men charged with murder has played out in the Glynn County Courthouse, they have watched with anguish as the gruesome details of the final moments of Arbery’s life — but nearly none of his humanity — were described to the jury. Part of the family’s role, Brooks said, is helping the public understand who her nephew was. “This activism kicked in me that I never saw myself being a part of,” she said. “I feel that every day that I go out, I have to have some kind of representation of Ahmaud.” Brooks has attended the trial regularly, filling notebooks with detailed descriptions of what is said by witnesses, lawyers and the judge. At the end of the day, she cross-references media coverage to make sure her notes are accurate before going live on Facebook to relay the day’s events to people around the world. Diane Arbery, another of Ahmaud Arbery’s aunts, has been outside the courthouse all day, every day talking to supporters. So has Carla Arbery, an aunt whose children were especially close to Ahmaud Arbery. Ruby Arbery, still another of Ahmaud Arbery’s aunts, has brought home-cooked meals for family members and supporters. Ahmaud Arbery’s parents have attended every day of the trial, each arriving with his or her own lawyer, and sometimes sitting with high-profile civil rights activists, including the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. “I’ve been trying to watch every second, every minute because I don’t want to miss anything,” said Akeem Baker, one of Arbery’s best friends since childhood. “I feel like if I take my eyes off it, I don’t want anything to kind of slip through the cracks.”
Many of those closest to Arbery begin and end the day with a prayer. They pray throughout the day for the strength to keep watching. “We need prayer,” Diane Arbery said. “We’ve got to keep praying, and we ask everyone out there to keep praying for us.” Last week, Black pastors from across the country joined the family in Brunswick in a show of support after a defense lawyer asked that Black pastors and civil rights leaders not be allowed in the courtroom because they could intimidate the jury. “My heart is full of just joy in the midst of this broken heart,” Wanda Cooper-Jones, Ahmaud Arbery’s mother, told the assembled crowd before asking the pastors and activists to say her son’s name. Brooks and Arbery’s other aunts were there too, wearing T-shirts that said, “It’s the Black pastors for me.” Arbery, 25, was known to his family and friends as Maud or Quez. He had been a standout linebacker for the Brunswick High School Pirates and dreamed of playing professional football. He left town briefly to attend a technical school but eventually returned to the Brunswick area and was living with his mother. “His mom was his queen,” Baker said. He liked rapping and listening to trap music. After a hard day, he sometimes went to Madge Merritt Park, near Brunswick, to rap to clear his mind. He had recently started a job doing landscaping work with his father, and he was also working at a truck wash, according to a friend. He also had a mental illness that caused him to have auditory hallucinations. The picture of Arbery painted by the lawyers for the men accused in his death has been difficult for the family to hear. One lawyer, building an argument that his assailants had reason to believe Arbery was responsible for a string of neighborhood break-ins, described him as “an intruder” who was caught four times on video “plundering around” a house under construction in the neighborhood. On Feb. 23, 2020, Brooks drove to the Satilla Shores neighborhood outside Brunswick as soon as she got off work — her disbelief at the news of Arbery’s death there compelling her to see for herself. “I was distraught,” she said. She was surprised to see that the house her nephew was accused of burglarizing had no windows or doors; it was still under construction. “Burglary,” she said. “It just kept playing in my mind, ‘How can you burglarize this?’” Brooks began keeping track of local news articles mentioning Arbery, trying to piece
together what happened. She wanted everyone to know what happened to her nephew and for his killers to be held accountable. Eventually, three men —Travis McMichael, his father, Gregory McMichael, and their neighbor William Bryan — were charged with murder. The case became among the most highprofile in the country, contributed to the national furor over shooting deaths of Black people and the wave of protests against systemic racism. In Georgia, it propelled lawmakers to enact hate crimes legislation and to largely dismantle the state’s citizen’s arrest law. In the months since, Brooks has marched

State attorneys general open inquiry into Instagram’s impact on teens By CECILIA KANG and MIKE ISAAC
A
bipartisan group of state attorneys general said last week that they had opened an investigation into Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, for promoting its social media app Instagram while knowing of mental and emotional harms caused by the service. At least 11 states are involved in the investigation, including California, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Tennessee and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, a leader of the investigation, said the states were examining whether the company’s actions violated state consumer protection laws and put the public at risk. “Facebook, now Meta, has failed to protect young people on its platforms and instead chose to ignore or, in some cases, double down on known manipulations that pose a real threat to physical and mental health — exploiting children in the interest of profit,” Healey said. The move comes after a trove of documents from a former employee detailed research inside of the social media company that suggested teenagers suffered body image issues when using Instagram. The documents, called The Facebook Papers, were shared with journalists in October. The Wall Street Journal first reported on the documents and the issues at Instagram with the help of Frances Haugen, the whistleblower. Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson, another leader of the investigation, said the states would examine the “the techniques utilized by Meta to increase the frequency and duration of engagement by young users and the resulting harms caused by such extended engagement.” “When social media platforms treat our kids as mere commodities to manipulate for longer screen time engagement & data extraction, it becomes imperative for state attorneys general to engage our investigative authority under our consumer protection laws,” Peterson said in a tweet. The states’ investigation adds to building regulatory pressure on Meta and other giants of Silicon Valley. Haugen and public interest groups have filed at least nine complaints to the Securities
The Facebook Papers, released by a whistle-blower, showed that roughly a third of teenage girls who already felt bad about their bodies said Instagram made them feel worse. and Exchange Commission claiming Meta misled investors about its efforts to protect users from disinformation and hate. The Federal Trade Commission and dozens of states have filed antitrust lawsuits to break up Meta, and members of Congress have vowed to create privacy, speech and antitrust legislation aimed at reining in the power of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google. Spanning tens of thousands of pages and gigabytes of data, The Facebook Papers show a company struggling to deal with many issues that come as a byproduct of its enormous scale and billions of users, spanning topics like misinformation, addiction and manipulation of users around the world. Much of the information came in the form of detailed reports investigating the issues, laid out by the company’s research division. Meta has said the research efforts are intended to address the issues they pinpoint, with the aim of improving the company’s products and services. The documents detail that roughly onethird of teenage girls in a survey who already felt bad about their bodies said Instagram made them feel worse. “Comparisons on Instagram can change how young women view and describe themselves,” the documents said. Meta has disputed the characterization of the initial reporting on Instagram’s issues, saying that the story lacked context, left out vital information and was a poor interpretation of the data obtained by The
Journal. The company argued that on 11 of 12 well-being issues, the surveyed teenage girls said Instagram made them feel “better and not worse.” “It is simply not accurate that this research demonstrates Instagram is ‘toxic’ for teen girls,” Pratiti Raychoudhury a vice president and head of research at Facebook, said in a company blog post in September. In a statement Thursday, a representative for Meta strongly disputed the claims made by the state attorneys general against Instagram. “These accusations are false and demonstrate a deep misunderstanding of the facts,” said Liza Crenshaw, a spokesperson for the company. “While challenges in protecting young people online impact the entire industry, we’ve led the industry in combating bullying and supporting people struggling with suicidal thoughts, self-injury, and eating disorders.”
CVS will close 900 stores as it looks beyond traditional pharmacies By CORAL MURPHY MARCOS
C
VS will close about 300 stores a year in the next three years, the company said last week, as the pharmacy chain focuses on offering more health care services and expanding its digital services. The closures, which will affect about 9% of the company’s stores, are part of an effort to realign its retail strategy, CVS said in statement on its website. The company operates more than 9,900 stores in the United States, according to its website. A CVS spokesperson said the company did not expect CVS pharmacies in Target stores to be affected. “We remain focused on the competitive advantage provided by our presence in thousands of communities across the country, which complements our rapidly expanding digital presence,” said Karen S. Lynch, president and chief executive of CVS Health. CVS is aiming to remake many of its
stores. Some will offer primary care services, and others will offer broader health care services than standard pharmacies, such as treatment for diabetes. The company will also maintain traditional CVS stores, which provide prescription services and health products. “Hybrid models really took off during the pandemic, including rapid delivery services, curbside pickup and buy online/pick up in-store,” said Ted Rossman, a senior analyst at Bankrate.com. “Those approaches could be particularly advantageous for CVS.” CVS said earlier this month that about 70% of CVS Pharmacy customers were enrolled in its text messaging program. “We continue to modernize our operating systems and enhance the integration of pharmacy models, simplifying consumer interactions and driving further engagement with our customers,” Lynch said during the company’s earnings conference call on Nov. 3.

S&P 500 at record high as banks rally on Powell nomination U .S. stocks hit fresh record highs Monday, while Treasury yields jumped and the dollar extended gains, as investors reacted to President Joe Biden’s decision to nominate Jerome Powell for a second term as Chairman of the Federal Reserve, with Lael Brainard pegged as Vice Chair. Global market gains were capped, however, following comments from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who cautioned that the recent COVID surge in Europe’s biggest economy has become ‘dramatic’, and argued for tighter restrictions on movement and businesses in the weeks ahead. Health Minister Jens Spahn was even more blunt, telling reporters in Berlin Monday that “by the end of this winter pretty much everyone in Germany ... will have been vaccinated, recovered or died.” With markets closed on Thursday, and trading for only a half day on Friday, liquidity is likely to be thin this week with only 12 S&P 500 companies reporting earnings and light economic calendar highlighted by minutes of the November Fed meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Stocks are getting their early Monday boost, however, from the sustained strength of the third quarter earnings season, which is easing into its conclusion, as collective S&P 500 profits rise 42.3% from last year to $452.9 billion. Strongerthan-expected consumer spending data, as well as continued improvements in the labor market are adding to the bullish tone. Inflation prospects, however, are showing few signs of abating, and the current rally -- which has taken the S&P 500 to a year-to-date gain of around 25.1% -- could be tested if the Fed were to accelerate its tapering plans in order to slow the searing pace of CPI gains. Investors will get a glimpse into a least some of that thinking Wednesday with the release of minutes from the Fed’s November policy meeting, as well as a reading of the PCE Price Index, the central bank’s preferred measure of inflation, earlier that same day. “While there’s still more to be done, we’ve made remarkable progress over the last 10 months in getting Americans back to work and getting our economy moving again,” Biden said in a statement. “That success is a testament to the economic agenda I’ve pursued and to the decisive action that the Federal Reserve has taken under Chair Powell and Dr. Brainard to help steer us through the worst downturn in modern American history and put us on the path to recovery.” On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 280 points in the opening minutes of trading, paced by gains in bank stocks, while the S&P 500 rose 36 points to a fresh record high. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite added 110 points from Friday’s record high close -- and first over 16,000 points -as benchmark 10-year Treasury note yields bumped to 1.587% in the wake of Biden’s Fed decision. Tesla (TSLA) - Get Tesla Inc Report shares jumped 3.9% higher in pre-market trading after founder and CEO Elon Musk said the Model S Plaid, the car-maker’s high performance luxury sedan, will be made available in China early next year.

Far-right candidate leads after first round of Chile’s presidential election
A polling station in Santiago, Chile, on Sunday. By PASCALE BONNEFOY and ERNESTO LONDONO
C
hileans on Sunday gave the lead in the country’s presidential race to a far-right politician, a stunning development in a nation that has been rattled by political and social protest over inequality and the rising cost of living. With more than 88% of the vote counted, José Antonio Kast, a conservative lawyer and former lawmaker who promised to restore security and order and to dramatically reduce the size of the state, had carved out a 3-point lead over his leftist rival, Gabriel Boric. The two will compete in a runoff Dec. 19. “Today we took the first step to turn hope into reality,” Kast told supporters Sunday night outside his campaign headquarters in an upscale Santiago neighborhood. “Chile deserves peace. Chile deserves liberty.” The race followed an unusually turbulent period in the South American nation, which has been governed for decades by centrist parties and had, until recently, been regarded as one of the region’s most stable and prosperous democracies. Chile’s departing president narrowly dodged impeachment this month. A month earlier, the army was deployed to the south to confront an increasingly violent uprising by Indigenous militants. And since July, delegates
in the capital have been drafting a new constitution, prompted by sweeping protests in 2019 over inequality and the rising cost of living. This tumultuous period, made still more unsettled by the coronavirus pandemic, set the stage for the first round of an unusually polarized presidential election Sunday. The centrist coalitions that have traded power in recent decades were underdogs in a race led by more radical candidates offering Chileans starkly opposed visions for the future. Chile’s election is among several in Latin America in which incumbents and governing parties are on the defensive, partly because of the upheaval and economic pain that the pandemic has inflicted. Foremost are next year’s presidential contests in Brazil and Colombia, where the virus has killed hundreds of thousands of people and crippled large segments of their economies. “COVID exposed inequalities, it exacerbated inequalities and made it easy to politicize those inequalities in a way that we expect will be very hard on incumbents,” said Jennifer Pribble, a political-science professor at the Virginia’s University of Richmond who specializes in Latin America. “It has generated malaise and discontent that citizens have to put on someone.” The leading candidates vying to replace President Sebastián Piñera — who is not
eligible for reelection — are on opposite sides of the political spectrum. Boric, a leftist lawmaker, promises to vastly expand the safety net, and Kast, a far-right former congressman, proposes a drastically leaner state in which the security forces are given broader authority to quell violence and disorder. The latest public opinion polls in Chile — which have been unreliable in recent elections — had tracked Kast’s growing appeal among voters in the final stretch of the campaign. The polls also suggested that Boric would prevail in a runoff. Kast, who won 8% of the vote when he ran for president in 2017, and Boric surprised political observers by rising to the top of the presidential contest as more moderate politicians gained little traction. Both tapped into the simmering discontent with the establishment parties that have dominated politics in Chile since the return of democracy in the 1990s. Dissatisfaction with the status quo burst out unexpectedly in October 2019, when an increase in Santiago subway fares set off a monthslong wave of demonstrations. Vandalism, including arson of subway stations and other government buildings, elicited a tough response by security forces, which fired rubber bullets into crowds of demonstrators, blinding hundreds. After failing to calm the streets for weeks, Piñera, a billionaire who was far from the ideal leader to tackle an uprising over inequality, agreed to support an initiative to convene a constitutional convention in late December 2019. That process began in May with the election of delegates representing broad segments of Chilean society that had historically been marginalized. The body drafting the new constitution has gender parity and is led by Elisa Loncón, a scholar from the Mapuche Indigenous community. The constitutional convention delegates are debating large-scale economic and social rights, which could upend matters like the pension system, reproductive rights and Indigenous claims over their ancestral lands. Boric, 35, a tattooed politician who eschews neckties and would become Chile’s youngest leader ever, has been a vocal supporter of the new constitution process, which he sees as a vehicle to drastically
overhaul Chile’s market-friendly economy and political system. “If Chile was the cradle of neoliberalism, it will also be its grave,” his campaign platform says. Boric, who is from Punta Arenas, a city in the far south, has proposed a wholesale overhaul of the social security system, shortening the workweek to 40 hours from 44 and forgiving student debt. The significant increase in public spending he envisions would be offset by new taxes on the ultrarich and a more effective system to fight corruption, his campaign platform says. He supports legalizing abortion — which is outlawed in Chile with a handful of exceptions — and same-sex marriage. Kast, 55, a lawyer who served in Congress from 2002 to 2018, adamantly opposes same-sex marriage and legalized abortion. He has proposed hard-line tactics to restore security in the country, highlighted by a proposal to build a ditch along the border with Bolivia, a gateway for immigrants. He says the Chilean bureaucracy ought to be radically downsized, calling for consolidating 24 ministries into 12 but favoring a significant expansion of the prison system. His strong-armed approach would extend to an armed uprising by Mapuche Indigenous factions in the Aracaunía region, where some seek to restore ancestral lands that are under the control of lumber companies by occupying the lands and burning trucks, homes and churches. Piñera, who last month invoked a state of emergency in Aracaunía, where he deployed the army, is completing his second, nonconsecutive term in office on a dour note. Lawmakers came close to impeaching him this month over a transaction in 2010 involving a mining company partly owned by his family. He leaves office with nearly 79% of the electorate disapproving of his performance and with many taking a dim view of the political class’s handling of the challenges of the past few years. “Governing has never been easy, and we faced especially hard times,” he said in an address Wednesday. “Unfortunately, this time around, I feel that in the world of politics we have lacked greatness, unity, collaboration, dialogue and agreements to face the enormous and pressing challenges.”

Two of 17 kidnapped missionaries in Haiti are freed, group says By MARIA ABI-HABIB
T
Haiti, but the brazen kidnapping in broad daylight shocked even local officials and residents accustomed to gangfueled violence, a further sign of the country’s growing lawlessness. U.S. officials estimate that tens of thousands of Haitian Americans are in Haiti at any given moment, either because they live there or because they go back and forth between the countries regularly. They are prime targets for abduction, and every time a ransom is paid, the gangs get encouragement to look for new victims. Security in the country has broken down in the wake of numerous natural disasters and political crises, including the assassination in July of President Jovenel Moïse. That has allowed gangs to increase their stranglehold over Port-auPrince and its suburbs, where nearly half the nation lives. Violence has overwhelmed much of the capital, and by some estimates, gangs now control about half the city. Many gangs wield enough power to bring the country to its knees. Last month, one prominent criminal group blocked the delivery of fuel to much of the country, plunging Haiti into darkness and halting everything from hospital operations to cellphone connectivity. The gangs, which often have political backing, have long been part of the country’s social fabric, but after Moïse’s killing, they have turned more assertive, taking control of vast swaths of territory.
In the absence of a fully functioning government since the killing of Moïse, the gangs’ power has only grown. A spate of natural disasters has only made things worse. In August, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake deepened the devastation of a country that has yet to recover from a quake in 2010 that killed more than 200,000 people. Rescue efforts this summer were initially hampered by security concerns, and aid flowed freely only after gangs that controlled a highway connecting the southern peninsula to the rest of Haiti declared a truce. A severe storm followed days later. In recent weeks, Haitian security forces have stepped up their operations to counter the criminal organizations, but security experts say that the government lacks a coherent strategy. The Haitian police need a complete overhaul, with thousands more police officers needed, a renewed focus on vetting during recruitment and money to buy new equipment, increase salaries and restore morality, American officials say. Unless a reformed police force can step in to reimpose control after neighborhoods are cleared of the gangs, observers say, the government will be unable to restore stability. The surging gang violence has prompted peaceful protests of late, with groups in towns and cities demanding a government response. Some blockaded roads and set tires on fire, a common protest symbol in Haiti.
wo of the 17 people with an American missionary group who were kidnapped in Haiti more than a month ago have been released, the organization said Sunday. The hostages, who included women and children, were seized by one of Haiti’s most fearsome gangs on Oct. 16 as the missionary group visited an orphanage outside the capital, Port-au-Prince. In announcing that two of them had been released, the group Christian Aid Ministries, based in Ohio, said it would not make public their names or say why they were freed. But the group said that those released are “safe, in good spirits, and being cared for.” The ministry urged discretion to protect those still in the hands of the gang members. “We ask that those who have more specific information about the release and the individuals involved would safeguard that information,” its statement said. A spokesperson for Christian Aid Ministries did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The group of hostages, which included 16 Americans and one Canadian, had been working with Christian Aid Ministries before being abducted by a gang called 400 Mawozo, which is infamous for orchestrating mass kidnappings. The gang initially demanded a ransom of $1 million per person, but that was widely viewed as a start to the negotiations that are common in kidnappings in Haiti. It was not immediately clear how much money, if any, was paid. The U.S. government responded carefully to the news. “We welcome reports that two individuals held hostage in Haiti have been released,” a State Department spokesperson said. “We do not have further comment at this time.” The spokesperson for the Haitian National Police, Gary Desrosiers, confirmed that two hostages were released on Sunday, although in its statement, Christian Aid Ministries did not specify when they were freed. It remained unclear why only two of the 17 hostages were released — whether their family or friends had cobbled together the ransom, perhaps, or if the gang had taken pity on them for a medical condition or some other reason. In some previous kidnappings, the 400 Mawozo gang released several hostages who were severely ill or elderly from a larger group. The youngest hostage seized from the missionary group was an infant. Since the kidnapping, Christian Aid Missionaries has been involved in protracted negotiations for the group’s release, with the gang demanding more money and the missionary group offering to bring services into their area instead, an official with knowledge of the matter said. The mass kidnapping of more than a dozen American citizens, five children among them, set off a furor, with U.S. lawmakers condemning the violence in Haiti, and the FBI and the State Department working with local authorities to The Christian Aid Ministries compound in Titanyen, north of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Oct. 17, 2021. Limping and penniless, Iraqis deported from Belarus face bleak futures
Nazar Shamsaldin on Sunday with some of his family back in Erbil, Iraq, after being deported from Belarus. By JANE ARRAF and SANGAR KHALEEL
I
t was cold in Belarus, bitterly cold, but at least it offered hope, however illusory. Nazar Shamsaldin was one of thousands of Iraqis who made their way to the Eastern European country in recent months, hoping it would prove a jumping-off point to new lives in the West, only to become pawns in a geopolitical game. But this weekend he was back in Iraq, sitting on the cold floor of a tiny unfinished concrete house, newly deported from Belarus. Nearby a small boy, one of a dozen children crammed into the house, trying to warm his hands over a single, battered kerosene heater. Shamsaldin, a laborer, and 35 of his relatives had risked everything to travel West. Like many of the hundreds of other Iraqis deported last week, they are now deep in debt and despair. The Iraqis are at the heart of a crisis that erupted after Belarus loosened its visa rules this summer, luring migrants but then pushing them across borders to punish the European Union for imposing sanctions against the autocratic Belarusian president. Once in Belarus, many of the migrant families were abandoned in deep forests with no shelter, food or water, sometimes thrust into dangerous confrontations as they tried to make it into Poland, Lithuania or Latvia,
all members of the European Union. “A Belarusian police officer pointed a pistol at my head, so I had to go back to Lithuania,” said Shamsaldin, 24, who had three small children with him. “In Lithuania, the commandos had guns pointed at me and told me, ‘If you don’t go back, we will kill you.’” He got the message. On Thursday, Shamsaldin returned with his family on an Iraqi Airways flight evacuating 431 migrants from Minsk, the capital of Belarus. Several thousand other migrants remain in Belarus near the border. They are mostly Iraqi Kurds, like Shamsaldin, as well as Iraqi Arabs, Syrians, Yemenis and even some Cubans. But with their usefulness to Belarus diminished, the now-penniless Iraqi migrants are being deported. Most are traumatized. Some have lingering injuries. “The Belarusians beat us with sticks, but the Lithuanians attacked us with sticks and tasers,” said Dhiab Zaydan, a cousin of Shamsaldin’s. Zaydan, 30, had a large bandage around his leg where, he said, he was beaten with night sticks. Photographs showed his entire side to be a deep purple, which he attributed to electric shocks. Reports of assaults at the border are common. “People have been beaten up, and they are in distress,” said Safeen Dizayee, head of the Foreign
Relations Department of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government. “We have told these authorities that they should be treated humanely and, at least until this problem is resolved, they should be treated like normal human beings with some kind of shelter or some food.” For many of the migrants, it was not their first attempt to leave. Shamsaldin had been trying to get to Germany, where he spent six months in 2015 before returning to Iraq to care for his sick father. “Germany is the only country where we have experienced human rights,” he said. Shamsaldin said that after walking for two days, he and his relatives were captured by the Belarusian police, pushed into the back of a military truck and driven to the Lithuanian border. There, they were told to cross the fence. Once they were in Lithuania, an aid organization gave them bread and water, and medical staff assessed any injuries while a cameraman filmed the operation, they recounted. Shamsaldin’s 2-month-old son was taken to a hospital to be treated for exposure. But once the aid organization and the cameras left, Lithuanian soldiers started using sticks and tasers, the Kurds said, trying to drive them back over the border. Shamsaldin said he reprimanded one Lithuanian officer, telling him, “‘You destroyed our country, and now we are coming to you, and you don’t have any humanity.’” The reference was to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, but the Lithuanian was quick to offer a correction. “That was Poland,” he replied. While Lithuania provided support during the U.S. occupation, Poland was part of the invading force. In a middle-class neighborhood of Irbil, Yadgar Hussein described her own tortuous journey, which led to her deportation from Poland three weeks earlier with her children. In October, they had waded through stream of sewage, she said, and walked through the forest for days in freezing temperatures after the Belarusian police cut the border fence. But once in Poland, a driver led them into a police checkpoint, where they were arrested, with her 19-year-old son and another migrant hiding in the trunk of the car. She still cannot sleep, she said. “The only thing I know is my life is destroyed,” said Hussein, who was married at 14 and widowed four years later when her husband stepped on a land mine. She is divorced from the father of her three youngest children. Hussein says she has not given up on leaving Irbil again, perhaps next time by the perilous sea crossing from Turkey to Greece. “If I had money, I would go by sea tomorrow for the sake of my children,” she said. “Either you die or you make it there. But nobody gets arrested.”

The internet broke brand loyalty By SHIRA OVIDE
A
few winters ago, I and many other American women purchased the Amazon Coat, a fairly affordable piece of outerwear that grabbed attention for a hot minute. It’s an OK coat, but I keep forgetting the name of the manufacturer. I doubt that I’m a customer for life. I’m not an oddball in this respect. One way that our lives online have rewired our brains is that we’re more comfortable buying from an unfamiliar brand. And those same changing habits may also be making us less loyal to anything that we buy. I was talking about this phenomenon recently with Josh Lowitz and Michael R. Levin, co-founders of the research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. We talked about the ways that online customer reviews, relatively low-cost social media advertising, and newer shopping destinations like Amazon and Instagram have reordered how we evaluate and buy products. It’s thrilling in many ways, and not so great in others. Think about the ways that you might have bought something in the Before Times — like, before 2010. Maybe you drove to your local hardware store looking for a cordless drill, and it stocked only DeWalt models. You trusted the store to sell a good product — or if you didn’t, it was your only option anyway. That’s what you bought. The retailer essentially made the choice for you, Levin and
Lowitz said. That’s not usually how we shop anymore. Instead of having that solo choice, we can browse the gazillion cordless drills on Amazon from our sofas and evaluate online customer reviews. Startups like Dollar Shave Club and Warby Parker proved that a clever product and canny advertising can turn us away from old standbys. We don’t need the store to be the arbiter of what we buy anymore. We might just need nudges on Instagram to persuade us to try new cookware. In many ways, this is awesome. A one-person company might need only a Shopify website, listings on Amazon or a Facebook page to compete with multinational conglomerates. Powerhouses like Nike or Levi’s can’t rest on their laurels for a century. We get more choices, are more open to trying something new and great products can break through. But like me and my Amazon coat, it may be harder than ever to form a lasting relationship. Maybe you bought the vacuum cleaner that you saw everywhere on TikTok, but will you ever buy from that company again? These young companies, as Lowitz described, “succeed in making sales but not customers.” What happens if companies focus solely on selling us something immediately, not on making us loyal customers? If companies need only to persuade us to buy something once, I wonder if it creates incentives to make meh products.
There is also a cost to choices. There are more chances for us to get duped from bogus reviews or other online tricks. Sometimes, it’s a relief to have only one option of cordless drills rather than having to pick from an ocean of them online. Molson Hart, the owner of the educational toy company Viahart that I wrote about earlier this year, told me that he believed it was still possible to build a great brand with lasting customers. It just takes fresh skills. Products that might have been drive-by purchases on Amazon can encourage repeat buyers by tucking in welcome messages in the product packaging, or reaching out to people who post raves on social media, he said. The idea is to be in people’s minds, so that they’ll come back for another purchase, leave a positive review on Amazon or both. (Not all customers love these tactics. And some Amazon sellers go too far by offering gift cards in exchange for reviews, which is against the company’s rules.) “Whether it is a store, Shopify, Amazon, a billboard, an advertisement ... whatever. If you can get people’s attention and get them to think your product is good, you’re creating a brand,” Hart said. “It doesn’t matter how you do it.” We don’t usually step back and think about why we buy certain products. When we do, it’s remarkable how much we’ve changed, and all the ways our habits have bent the shopping world.

The Mall of San Juan.
‘King Richard’ review: Father holds court By A.O. SCOTT
T
he climactic scenes in “King Richard” take place in 1994, as Venus Williams, 14 years old and in her second professional tennis match, faces Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, at the time the top-ranked player in the world. If you don’t know the outcome, you might want to refrain from Googling. And even if you remember the match perfectly, you might find yourself holding your breath and full of conflicting emotion as you watch the director Reinaldo Marcus Green’s skillful and suspenseful restaging. You most likely know what happened next. Venus and her younger sister Serena went on to dominate and transform women’s tennis, winning 30 Grand Slam singles titles between them (plus 14 doubles titles as a team) and opening up the sport to aspiring champions of every background. (They are credited as executive producers of this film.) You might also know that those achievements fulfilled an ambition that their father, Richard Williams, had conceived before Venus and Serena were born. In the years of their ascent, he was a well-known figure, often described with words like “controversial,” “outspoken” and “provocative.” “King Richard” aims in part to rescue Williams from the condescension of those adjectives, to paint a persuasive and detailed picture of a family — an official portrait, you might say — on its way to fame and fortune. In modern Hollywood terms, the movie might be described as a two-forone superhero origin story, in which Venus (Saniyya Sidney) takes command of her powers while Serena (Demi Singleton) begins to understand her own extraordinary potential, each one aided by a wise and wily mentor. But this is a fundamentally — and I would say marvelously — oldfashioned entertainment, a sports drama that is also an appealing, socially alert story of perseverance and the up-by-thebootstraps pursuit of excellence. It’s also a marriage story. When we first meet them, in the early 1990s, Richard (Will Smith) and his wife, Oracene (Aunjanue Ellis), are living with five daughters in a modest bungalow-style house in Compton,
California. He works nights as a security guard, and she’s a nurse. Their shared vocation, though — the enterprise that is the basis of their sometimes fractious partnership — is their children. This is an all-consuming task: to bring up confident, successful Black girls in a world that is determined to undervalue and underestimate them. Tennis, which Richard chose partly because of its whiteness and exclusivity, is only part of the program. The children — Tunde (Mikayla Lashae Bartholomew), Lyndrea (Layla Crawford) and Isha (Daniele Lawson), along with Venus and Serena — lead highly structured, intensely monitored lives. (A disapproving neighbor calls the authorities, convinced that Richard and Oracene are being too hard on the girls.) This is partly protective, a way of keeping them away from what Richard ominously calls “these streets” — a menace represented by the hoodlums who harass Richard and the girls during practice sessions — but it also reflects his temperament and philosophy. He likes slogans and lessons, at one point forcing the family to watch Disney’s “Cinderella” to teach the importance of humility. “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” is one of his favorite mottos. There is nothing haphazard or sloppy about “King Richard,” and it succeeds because it has a clear idea about what it wants to accomplish. The script, by Zach Baylin, is sometimes unapologetically corny — if you took a drink every time the Williams sisters say “yes, Daddy” you’d pass out before Venus won her first junior match — but the warmth and verve of the cast make the sentimentality feel earned. Smith, digging into Williams’ Louisiana accent and mischievous sense of humor, plays the character as a kindred soul of sorts — a charmer with a strategy. The white men who dominate the tennis world see him at first as someone to be brushed off or patronized. Later, when confronted with the undeniable and potentially lucrative fact of Venus’ talent, they are surprised to discover that Richard’s agenda doesn’t always align with theirs. Against the advice of two top coaches, he pulls Venus off the junior tournament circuit. He is unpersuaded by agents, sneaker executives
and others who claim to have his daughters’ best interests at heart. They see him, sometimes with affection, as stubborn and unreasonable, but he’s usually right. The film’s treatment of the coaches Paul Cohen (a suave, tan Tony Goldwyn) and Rick Macci (a manic, mustachioed Jon Bernthal) is gracious and skeptical. They are neither saviors nor villains, but rather men whose stake in the tennis system limits their perspectives. (The white tennis parents, on the other hand, are a pretty awful bunch, encouraging their children to cheat and berating them when they lose.) The coaches can see Venus and Serena’s potential as athletes, but only within the parameters of a status quo that the sisters will soon demolish. That, too, is part of Richard’s plan. But if “King Richard” were just the streamlined chronicle of his triumph — if there weren’t at least a twinkle of irony in the title — it wouldn’t be convincing. Smith shows his usual, disarming skill at tactical selfdeprecation, but it’s Ellis and Sidney who provide the necessary complexity. Venus, after all, is the center of the narrative: it’s not only her career but also her growing independence and self-awareness that keep us interested in what happens next. And it’s Oracene who stands as the
film’s crucial internal critic, the person who can challenge Richard’s sloganeering, bring him down to earth, and point out his failings. At times, this can seem like too much of a burden. Fairly late in the movie, she lays into Richard about his failed business and the children he has had with other women — all of it new information for the viewer, none of it ever mentioned again. The scene is not powerful because it exposes less-than-admirable aspects of Richard’s character, but because it shows how raw, messy and difficult even an apparently functional and harmonious marriage can be. (It also may foretell Richard and Oracene’s eventual divorce, in 2002.) In the best Hollywood tradition, “King Richard” stirs up a lot of emotion while remaining buoyant and engaging. It’s serious but rarely heavy. Richard’s advice to his daughters when they step out on the court is to have fun, and Green (whose credits include the impressive “Of Monsters and Men”) takes that wisdom to heart. This one’s a winner. ‘King Richard’ Rated PG-13. Brief violence, and some swear words and racial slurs. Running time: 2 hours 18 minutes. In theaters and on HBO Max.

‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ review: A play for nostalgia and merch
In “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the main characters are adorable, wide-eyed children, played by, from left, Celeste O’Connor, Finn Wolfhard, Logan Kim and Mckenna Grace. By MANOHLA DARGIS
I
f it seems that the only movie Big Hollywood knows how to make is the one they made last year — and the year before that — there’s a reason. The industry’s franchise fever is real, though much depends on timing. My colleague Kyle Buchanan once determined that while successful sequels tend to be rolled out every few years, those that wait six years are often doomed to fail. That may be welcome news for the latest “Ghostbusters,” a cautious, painlessly watchable kidcentric romp that is opening precisely five years, four months and four days after the previous installment went splat. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” was directed by Jason Reitman, whose father, Ivan Reitman, directed the first two movies in the 1980s, and was in line to take on the third. Over many
years and after many more studio notes, a new director, Paul Feig, was brought in, and the third movie became a femaledriven reboot. Before it even opened, the reboot became the target of viciously sexist and racist trolling and rage, a casualty of the culture wars. But much like the troublesome apparitions that haunt this series, profitable franchises (and even barely profitable ones) rarely truly die in Hollywood. And “Ghostbusters” is simply too goofy, too smart about dumb fun and too potentially lucrative to stay buried for long. And so: “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which is as cuddly and toothless as you would expect from a relaunched studio property in which the main characters are children and Paul Rudd plays a love interest. They’re all predictably adorable and have big, easy-to-read eyes, the better to widen in feigned surprise or mock fear when various ghosts come
a-calling. For their part, the cartoonish apparitions range from the cutesy to the PG-13 snarly and include a roly-poly metal muncher, a pair of slathering hellhounds and some puffy, gurgling creatures whose wide-open arms and demonically cheerful smiles have been engineered for toy shelves and maximum nostalgia. There’s a story, sure, though you don’t care and neither do I. What matters are the jokes, energy, boos and characters, who are appealing mostly because the performers playing them are too. The main kids are a brother, Trevor (Finn Wolfhard of “Stranger Things”), and his younger brainiac sister, Phoebe (the very good Mckenna Grace). With their mom (the reliable Carrie Coon), they move to a desolate farm in the middle of Oklahoma (played by Alberta, Canada), near one of those small, non-depressed towns straight out of classical Hollywood. There, the kids pick up two charming second bananas (Logan Kim, Celeste O’Connor), crack jokes, battle demons, solve mysteries. Jason Reitman makes easy-watching, frictionless mainstream comedies and dramas for adults (“Up in the Air,” “The Front Runner”) that deliver their laughs softly and their sanctimony seriously. Like his father, he is sentimental, but his father’s comedies are brasher, more down market and high concept: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito are “Twins,” etc. The Reitmans have split the duties on “Afterlife,” with Ivan serving as the producer and Jason sharing script credit with Gil Kenan. Whatever influence the father had on the son, one of the nicer things about this joint venture is that, while the adults in the story tell the young’uns what to do, the emphasis remains on the action, not the life lessons. Franchise sequels bank on dependability and giving the audience exactly what it expects. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” certainly makes good on that contractual promise: There are ghosts, and they are busted. By design, there isn’t a single genuine surprise in the movie. Instead, the movie leans heavily into the previous installments in an effort to create the kind of self-generating franchise mythology that can support further sequels (and so on). It trots out the familiar gadgets, ghosts and goo as well as beloved faces and Ray Parker Jr.’s indestructible earworm of a theme song. Like the younger Reitman, Phoebe and her Scooby Gang battle ghosts on every front. ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Rated PG-13 for ghostly peril. Running time: 2 hours 4 minutes. In theaters.

How to host Thanksgiving with unvaccinated friends and family By CHRISTINA CARON
I
n addition to the big, juicy turkey on the table, there’s also an elephant lurking in the room this Thanksgiving: the vaccination status of your guests. It’s a tricky thing to talk about. Do you ask your aunt if she received the COVID vaccine after she RSVPs? What if she says no? Do you endure another scaled-back celebration, like last year? Or should you serve up a bunch of precautions? According to a Marist Poll published in September, most Americans (nearly 80%) say they have gotten or will get a COVID vaccine, but nearly 20% still say they do not intend to be vaccinated. That doesn’t sit well with some of the people who have already rolled up their sleeves. A recent Harris Poll found that half of the more than 1,400 vaccinated respondents were either “extremely” or “considerably” hesitant to spend the holidays with unvaccinated family members or friends. For some, the risk of celebrating with unvaccinated friends and relatives just isn’t worth it. But if you’re open to gathering with a mixed vaccination status group, there are ways to do it cautiously, experts say. “Be not afraid, but be reasonable,” said Dr. Juan C. Salazar, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist and physician-in-chief of Connecticut Children’s in Hartford, Connecticut. You can still get together, he said, but each family will need to ask one crucial question: “What is the likelihood that we will get very sick from COVID-19?” If you’re uncertain of how to proceed (or whether you ought to gather at all) we asked several experts for ideas on how to make Thanksgiving safer for everyone. Make it a shared problem to be solved. Start by calling your unvaccinated family members and soliciting their ideas on how to gather safely, said Daniel L. Shapiro, an associate professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School and the author of “Negotiating the Nonnegotiable: How to Resolve Your Most Emotionally Charged Conflicts.” Ask: “What’s your advice on how we can make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable when we get together?” he suggested. Then come up with some ideas. Perhaps you suggest that there should be
mandatory testing right before dinner, or that you should gather outside, near a patio heater. “Try not to judge any ideas right away,” Shapiro advised. “Some ideas will be better than others, and by brainstorming together as a family, everyone can take more ownership over the chosen idea. A warning, though: If you go this route, make sure you stick to joint brainstorming and don’t slip into political debate.” Use rapid testing to reduce risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, taking a coronavirus test before a holiday celebration can reduce the risk of spreading the virus, particularly when people from multiple households and different parts of the country mix. Rapid antigen tests, which can indicate within minutes whether someone is contagious with COVID-19, are the best options, said Dr. Michael J. Mina, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and a co-author of a recent New York Times editorial about the usefulness of home testing. “Everyone knows if they come to my house, they are going to be tested,” he said. Mina, who is hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year (and also has a newborn), will offer rapid antigen home tests to each of his guests, regardless of their vaccination status — and his family will use them as well. Any guests who are positive will need to leave. Taking the test just before entering someone’s home is ideal, because the results only reflect whether you have a lot of virus in your nose at that very moment, he added. If your family members balk at the idea, remind them that an infected person can easily spread the virus to other people, even if they don’t have symptoms. And while the vaccine is very good at protecting against severe illness and death, the latest data suggest that immunity against infection may be slowly waning for vaccinated people. “If a rapid test says you’re positive, then that is a very reliable indication that you are infected and infectious,” said Eleanor Murray, an epidemiologist at the Boston University School of Public Health. “You should not be around other people.” Rapid tests are sometimes in short supply, but can be found at retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Kroger, CVS or
Walgreens, both online and in stores. Many of them are pricey, often costing around $24 for two tests. Keep an open mind when talking to relatives about the vaccine. People may decide not to get vaccinated for a variety of reasons, so try not to make assumptions about their rationale, the experts said. Instead, ask questions and listen. If they have a fear of needles (something called trypanophobia, which can occur in adults and children), perhaps you might ask if you can accompany them to the vaccination site and hold their hand. Or if they say they haven’t been vaccinated because they haven’t had time to schedule an appointment, you might ask if you can assist them in doing that. “That one-on-one conversation approach really does help,” Murray said. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines require two shots spaced three or four weeks apart, and full protection comes two weeks after the second dose. If your relatives want one of these vaccines and haven’t yet received a first dose, they’re out of time to get fully vaccinated before Thanksgiving. But there is plenty of time to do it before Christmas — and they can get one shot now, which will provide some protection before Thanksgiving, Murray said. Alternatively, there’s still time to get fully vaccinated with the one-shot Johnson
& Johnson vaccine, but it is not as widely available as the mRNA vaccines, nor is it considered as protective as a two-dose regimen. Think about masks, ventilation and the size of your party. Your family may not have the money to spend on pricey rapid tests. But there are other things you can do to stay protected. Regardless of whether your guests are vaccinated, one of the safest places to gather is outdoors. If you are attending an indoor gathering, open the windows and — if you have the extra cash — consider buying a HEPA air purifier to reduce the amount of airborne virus, Mina said. The CDC recommends that everyone, including children 2 years old and up, wear a mask if any guests are at increased risk of serious disease, have a weakened immune system or are unvaccinated. If you’re the one hosting Thanksgiving and you have unvaccinated family members, consider limiting your gathering to no more than 10 people and two households, Salazar suggested. “This is not yet the year where 30 people can gather in one household,” he added. But if everyone in attendance is fully vaccinated and nobody has viral symptoms or any risk factors for serious disease, he advised that gatherings could potentially go up to three family groups or 15 people. “Nothing is foolproof,” he added, including the vaccine.

You should see her in a crown. Now you can see her face.
A provided image shows the Bronze Age Argaric settlement at La Bastida in Spain. Researchers are analyzing the genomes of 33 people who were buried here. By JENNIFER PINKOWSKI
T
his year, archaeologists announced the discovery of a remarkable, 3,700-year-old double burial in Murcia, Spain. Skeletons of a man and a woman were draped in silver — earrings, bracelets, rings and, most notably, a silver diadem that had once gleamed on the woman’s head. The burial site, and particularly the crown and other fineries interred with the woman, hinted at a premodern European culture in which women might have held considerable power. The skeletons were unearthed in a large ovoid jar in La Almoloya, a key settlement of the El Argar culture, which is one of the earliest examples of a society in Europe with a ruling bureaucracy, geopolitical boundaries and other hallmarks of an advanced state. Although the gender politics of El Argar continue to be debated, a pair of complementary research projects are solving mysteries at this burial site. One has given faces to the woman, the man and others buried at La Almoloya, while the other is filling out an intriguing genetic history for the El Argar people. Joana Bruno, a doctoral student at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, created digital facial representations of 36 people buried at La Almoloya. At the burial site, she said, “We not only have most of the facial portion of the skulls complete, but we also have the mandible, which is a very important portion of what constitutes the lower contour of the face.” The research is part of her dissertation; the findings have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal. Using a combination of facial reconstruction methods, anatomical knowledge and computer software, Bruno created a series of faces that are gray-toned and rendered in profile, their distinctive noses and ears made more prominent by their
lack of hair. The reconstructions have intentionally neutral facial expressions to enable comparisons. “We are trying to use these faces to see if the resemblance between certain traits could point us towards a shared genetic relationship” among the bodies, Bruno said. The silver-rich woman died around 1,700 B.C., during the last phase of the El Argar culture. The upper portion of her skull didn’t survive the millenniums, but a short video by Bruno depicts her with a long narrow nose and thick silver earlobe plugs. Digital facial reconstruction of the man buried beside her (known as AY38/2) shows he had a recessed jaw, or retrognathism. A girl buried nearby (AY30/2) had the same trait. Bruno proposed that the two were related, and genomic analysis proved her right. The man was the girl’s father. “The fact that AY38/2 is the father of AY30/2 gives further support to retrognathism as a relevant marker of Argaric populations,” said Cristina Rihuete Herrada, a professor of prehistory at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and one of the discoverers of the burial site. Bruno also modeled the face of a boy found at the burial site. As she digitally fleshed him out, his unusually wide-set eyes emerged. The condition, hypertelorism, can be caused by a number of genetic disorders. Understanding the genetic relationships of the Almoloya bodies to others across the Iberian Peninsula was the goal of another study, published Wednesday in Science Advances. Researchers analyzed the genomes of 67 people buried at La Almoloya, including the silver-crowned woman, and 33 buried at the Argaric site of La Bastida. The researchers then compared them with the genomes of nearly 200 people found across what are now Spain and Portugal, spanning the years 3,300 B.C. to 1,000 B.C.
This period includes the transition from the Copper Age to the Bronze Age around 2,200 B.C. It was a time of social upheaval across China, the Near East, Egypt and Europe that may have been incited by a century of intense climate change, during which environments became much drier. On the lower Iberian Peninsula, the delineation between the two ages is especially sharp. Copper Age sites contain monumental funerary structures, fortified mega-settlements and artifacts that originated in far-off places. But this lifestyle was largely abandoned in the early Bronze Age. The El Argar favored large hilltop settlements like La Almoloya, and their burials were more intimate, with just a person or two interred. Their pottery, specialized weapons and bronze, silver and gold artifacts were distinctly different. The researchers found that Argaric genetics reflected this turnover. Based on DNA extracted from teeth and cranial bones, they discovered that after the transition from the Copper Age to the Bronze Age, the El Argar had genetic links to a population in Central Europe known as the steppe people. The researchers also found a surprising gender divide across the Argaric sites. Based on their mitochondrial DNA, passed from mother to child, the women and girls were mostly descended from local people. Yet the men and boys were overwhelmingly related to the steppe people, and had virtually no genetic inheritance from the local people. The men and boys, tracked through their Y chromosomes, belonged to a genetic population now among the most common in Western Europe, but which was relatively new to the Iberian Peninsula 4,200 years ago. About a century after their arrival, these steppe-descended men replaced the local Iberian men entirely — and had many children with the local women. As researchers studied these genomes, another gender difference emerged as well. “Males have many relatives at the site, whereas the females have less,” said Vanessa Villalba-Mouco, a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Germany and an author of the study. While the study focuses on population genetics at a regional scale, there are details about a few individuals in the data, too. Phenotype analysis suggests that most of them had brown eyes, brown or black hair and generally medium-toned skin. A few were redheads. And researchers also found evidence of genetic disorders. One infant girl was found to have Trisomy X, or three X chromosomes, which is linked to a number of disorders. Their burials, however, were typical for La Almoloya. The woman with the silver crown, for instance, had the richest tomb as well as a shortened, fused spine and a stunted left thumb. “What is important here is that people potentially impaired were not treated differently and certainly not excluded,” Rihuete-Herrada said. The next step in their research is to try to establish family links between the people at La Almoloya based on their locations, housing environments and burials, which will inform their understanding of the Argaric social structure, including

What we learned from Week 11 in the NFL By TYLER DUNNE
T
his season, bludgeoning running attacks have paid off. Defenses have turned to deploying two-deep safety looks to diffuse the bigplay potential of the league’s most potent quarterbacks — Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Kyler Murray. NFL front offices have also started drafting lighter, quicker defensive players capable of reacting to their improvisation. So the smart offensive minds are countering with the run. That pivot absolutely makes the Indianapolis Colts dangerous down the stretch. Sunday’s 41-15 win over the Buffalo Bills made this week’s biggest takeaway clear: Jonathan Taylor has entered the MVP chat. One year ago, he struggled to even stay on the field as a rookie. This season, it has taken a good two months for Jonathan Taylor to calibrate with the Colts’ powerful offensive line. But Taylor’s full repertoire was on display at rainy, windy Highmark Stadium in western New York, and the Colts shoved the Bills’ top-ranked defense around behind the running game, as Taylor finished with 185 rushing yards on 32 carries with five total touchdowns. Indianapolis fed Taylor from the start. He carried the ball on six of the 11 plays of the opening drive, scoring his first touchdown sliding behind a block by tight end Jack Doyle and carrying Buffalo cornerback Tre’Davious White on his back on a 3-yard run. His second score, a 23-yard reception that put the Colts ahead, 14-0, had Taylor again toting White over the goal line. His third touchdown came late in the first half, with Taylor going over the line to punch in a score. But Taylor saved his best to put the Bills away. In the third quarter, Buffalo coach Sean McDermott’s bizarre decision to have Tyler Bass attempt a 49-yard field goal backfired with a miss. On first-and-10 from midfield, Taylor had a dazzling 40-yard run in which he used a high-step hesitation to zoom past Bills safety Jordan Poyer. Then on the next play, he froze cornerback Levi Wallace with a shoulder dip and knifed inside for his
Colts running back Jonathan Taylor had five total touchdowns as Indianapolis shocked the Bills. fourth score to put the Colts up, 31-7. For the heck of it, Taylor plunged ahead for a fifth touchdown shortly after. Monday morning will be a physically painful one for every defensive player in Buffalo, and the No. 1 reason, of course, was Taylor. He is a fascinating thinker, a philosophy major in college who thought about attending Harvard before choosing Wisconsin, because he dreamed of becoming an astrophysicist. Taylor’s mind operates at a different level. When he wasn’t blasting Big Ten Conference defenses, he was studying the works of the German metaphysician Immanuel Kant or tending to a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle without using the box as a guide. Now, he’s driving NFL defenses mad and, with Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry out, working his way into the MVP race. Kansas City’s defense needed a tweak, not an overhaul. Kansas City’s juggernaut offense had short-circuited for stretches this season while trying to compensate for a defense that gave up 30 or more points in four of its first five games. But against the league’s most highpowered offense, its defense stepped up to
deliver a black-and-blue 19-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys that should recharge Kansas City’s Super Bowl expectations. On a night when Patrick Mahomes wasn’t bad, but also wasn’t great, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo managed to fluster Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott with a pass rush that held Prescott to his second-lowest yardage total (216) of the season. In all, Kansas City hit Prescott eight times, sacked him five times and intercepted two of his passes and forced a fumble. So what changed for Kansas City’s defense? It didn’t hurt that the Cowboys were without receiver Amari Cooper, who tested positive for coronavirus and who is not vaccinated against COVID-19, and that top receiver CeeDee Lamb left Sunday’s game with a concussion. Statistically, Prescott entered Sunday as the NFL’s best quarterback against the blitz and Spagnuolo unloaded exotic pressures on him anyway. It worked. The biggest factor of all, though, was moving Chris Jones back inside to defensive tackle after he spent much of the season on the edge. He had more sacks Sunday (3 1/2) than he had all season (three), three quarterback hits and tipped the pass that ended up being intercepted by cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to end the Cowboys’ final drive. In giving up only 276 total yards against
an offense averaging an NFL-high 433.9 per game, it’s safe to declare this defense officially back. On his third sack of the game, Jones busted out LeBron James’ chest-thumping celebration. On his final takedown, he easily discarded the Cowboys’ four-time AllPro guard Zack Martin. Since Kansas City’s Super Bowl triumph over San Francisco at the end of the 2019 season — when Jones declared immediately afterward that the Chiefs would be a dynasty — Jones has been this front seven’s energy force. Cam Newton remains must-see TV. This was a reunion of necessity, the Carolina Panthers rolling out the red carpet for Cam Newton once more. A series of brutal decisions at the most important position in sports gave the Panthers no other choice but to call Newton, the 2015 MVP, who departed Carolina in 2019 after nine seasons with the team. Carolina lost to the Washington Football Team on Sunday, 27-21, and now has a 5-6 record. But if nothing else, we know this out of Week 11: The quarterback who tore through the league in 2015 for 45 touchdowns en route to the Super Bowl is no more, but it’s also true that Newton, 32, had no business waiting for a job until mid-November. After scoring two touchdowns in a limited role last week, Newton started at home Sunday and did not disappoint with three total touchdowns and 189 yards on 21 of 27 passing. Of course, the numbers alone never do Newton justice. His arrival itself injected the Panthers with hope out of nowhere. When he was introduced Sunday, the team blared “Coming Home” by Dirty Money featuring Skylar Grey over the loudspeakers. As smoke clouded the tunnel, Newton took a moment to bask in this improbable return before screaming at the top of his lungs and sprinting onto the field. Since he was drafted No. 1 overall in 2011, Newton’s energy has been contagious and his unique swagger, on and off the field, gave the entire franchise an identity. But as he accrued injuries in Carolina, it looked as if Newton’s arm was officially shot.

From page 27 He spent the 2020 season in New England struggling to throw the football, with only eight touchdowns in 15 starts. And after losing a training camp battle to the rookie Mac Jones this past summer, he was released. Carolina’s post-Newton quarterback plans simultaneously crumbled. After one season with Teddy Bridgewater as their quarterback, the Panthers traded for Sam Darnold, who stormed out to a 3-0 start this season then regressed each week before landing on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. On Nov. 11, the Panthers essentially said, “Why not?” and signed the most beloved player in franchise history. The team’s margin for error is now minuscule, but Newton’s presence alone will bring a glimmer of hope and, bare minimum, a ton of excitement. His touchdowns Sunday were vintage Newton. Punctuating the game’s first drive, he stepped up as if he would run upfield, stopped and jumped to throw a 10-yard touchdown pass to receiver D.J. Moore. Late in the second quarter, off a play fake, Newton raced to the left edge of the Washington defense and outran multiple defensive backs to the pylon, putting the Panthers up, 14-7. Newton then sprinted to mid-
field to perform his trademark “Superman” celebration. In the end, Carolina’s leaky defense spoiled his return. Taylor Heinicke threw for three touchdowns and Washington ran for 190 yards on 40 attempts. For the Panthers, the game was a crash to reality in a cluttered NFC, but given that Newton prepared as a starter for all of one week in a completely new, complex offensive scheme run by coordinator Joe Brady, Newton was impressive. Carolina will keep opening that playbook for Newton and hope he still has some pixie dust. One thing’s for certain: The NFL is a lot more fun with Newton in it. Around the NFL Cardinals 23, Seahawks 13: Long live Colt McCoy. The journeyman quarterback has been a godsend with Kyler Murray out, and he outplayed Russell Wilson with 328 yards and two touchdowns. No DeAndre Hopkins, no problem: Five different Cardinals had at least four receptions. Bengals 32, Raiders 13: A bye week served Cincinnati well. Possibly no team is as healthy as the Bengals, and that could ultimately be what separates them in a crowded AFC North. After struggling defensively, Cin-
cinnati held the Raiders to 13 first downs, 278 total yards and a 1-of-7 conversion rate on third down. Texans 22, Titans 13: Houston, 10 1/2-point underdogs, shocked Tennessee on the road behind quarterback Tyrod Taylor’s two touchdown runs and a defense that forced four Ryan Tannehill interceptions. Three of those picks came in the fourth quarter. Injuries are piling up for the Titans, who lost top receiver A.J. Brown in the third quarter with an injured chest. Vikings 34, Packers 31: Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins finished 24 of 35 passing for 341 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions and a 128.4 passer rating, to beat Green Bay, which played without running back Aaron Jones and tight end Robert Tonyan, two of Aaron Rodgers’ favorite targets. 49ers 30, Jaguars 10: A trendy Super Bowl pick in August, the 49ers seemed dead by October. But as they get healthier, they’re rediscovering their bruising identity and are now right in the thick of the playoff race at 5-5. A string of winnable games is lined up and, each week, it seems like coach Kyle Shanahan dusts off a new play for do-it-all receiver Deebo Samuel. He rushed eight times for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Kansas City defensive tackle Chris Jones had 3.5 sacks and recovered a fumble in the team’s win over the Dallas Cowboys.
Ravens 16, Bears 13: MVP candidate Lamar Jackson was a late scratch with an illness, and it wasn’t pretty offensively with Tyler Huntley at quarterback. However, Devonta Freeman bashed ahead for a 3-yard touchdown with 22 seconds left to improve Baltimore’s record to 7-3. Eagles 40, Saints 29: Trevor Siemian has struggled mightily through three straight losses for New Orleans. He threw 18 incompletions and two picks Sunday, while Eagles coach Nick Sirianni’s decision to lean on the rushing attack continues to pay off. Philadelphia blasted the Saints for 242 yards on 50 attempts with three touchdowns. Dolphins 24, Jets 17: Miami needs to see as much of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as it possibly can the rest of the season to make a franchise-defining decision heading into 2022. He was solid against a bad Jets defense, completing 27 of 33 passes for 273 yards with two touchdowns. Browns 13, Lions 10: Nothing like a date with Tim Boyle to get your defense back on track. The Browns’ passing game wasn’t sharp, but the Lions’ was worse, as Boyle threw for all of 77 yards on 23 attempts in place of an injured Jared Goff. As long as the Browns can feed Nick Chubb (130 yards), they’ll have a shot against anyone.

There’s a change occurring from today, as the emphasis moves to a more secluded sector. It’s time to connect with deeper feelings and to tune into your dreams and intuition. This phase will last around four weeks, and might see you paying more attention to the messages of your soul. Does a goal seem out of reach? A mentor might help you to uncover your awesome potential.

Indeed, with the Sun now beckoning from your leisure zone, it’s time to unwind and enjoy life more, Leo.
With the Moon linking to Venus in a private sector, this is an opportunity to reflect quietly on key decisions. If it seems that you should set stronger boundaries regarding one person, then doing so can leave you feeling so much happier. Your social life perks up too, as the Sun adds sizzle to this zone over the weeks ahead, and paves the way for sparkling times to come.
Virgo
Pisces
(Aug 24-Sep 23)
Your home zone receives a boost from the radiant Sun, as it moves in for four weeks. With the festive season just around the corner, it’s a good time consider your priorities and plan, so that everything gets done in a relaxed way, Virgo. (Feb 20-Mar 20)

If you have an inkling to send off your CV or apply for an interview, then do it. Don’t be too modest either, as the more you are willing to promote your abilities and even show off a little, the better your chances of success.
