SUMMER 2020

Edito Dear readers, It’s our first issue since the beginning of 2020. Yes, in July. And you may wonder why, behind your screen. As you can see, the beginning of 2020 hasn’t been the best so far, first with the global pandemic. It’s been tough, in quarantine, to jungle between our studies, the magazine and our jobs, all of it, while in our house, quarantined, and the shoot that we were supposed to do was delayed. And the truth is, we also have been having a writer’s block. For some days, we kind of lose interest in the magazine, we didn’t know what we’ll be talking about in the next issues. And the issue that was supposed to be for February/March, was postponed. You mix all of this with a little bit of lack of inspiration and you have our mood, all over quarantine. But now, we are getting better, and this is why we are proud to show you our next issue of SATURNE, featuring Rudy Pankow, Hannah Meloche, Haven, Matthew Salomon, Ashley Romans, and Sam Valentine. We are preparing a lot of new things, photoshoots, articles, features, etc for the next issue. In the meantime, we hope that you'll like this one. And, as usual, don't hesitate to give us your feedback on our social media. Thank you! Cerena Hammana & Lyna Allet

Hannah Meloche INTERVIEW BY LYNA ALLET PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIZIANO LUGLI STYLING BY MIKIEL BENYAMIN HAIR AND MAKEUP BY FRANCIE TOMALONIS

Hannah Meloche is a 19 year old influencer, model, entrepreneur and producer. With a combined 3.5 million followers across her social platforms, Meloche is taking fans on her journey of exploring life during her gap year and has so far been jammed packed. She recently partnered with Tarte Cosmetics and Sugar Rush to create a multi-purpose palette that supports her love for sustainability. The cruelty-free, versatile palette allows fans to recreate her effortless style. Through her palette launch, Meloche has partnered with and helped raise money for the Thirst Project, a non-profit organization who aims to bring safe drinking water to communities around the world. Through this partnership, Meloche aims to soon take a trip to one of the affected countries to participate in the construction of the water well as well as meet some of the villagers it will be helping, all of which will be documented for her YouTube channel. In May of 2019, Hannah Meloche launched her own company Starlite Village, which focuses on affordable and sustainable jewelry and clothing. Each month, the company features a limited collection that repeatedly sells out in just a number of days. Some of her featured collections include: The Coffee Collection (an ode to her love of coffee), The Travel Collection and The Zodiac Collection. We had the opportunity to talk to her about a few things you can read below. ... Why did you start your youtube channel? At first I started my channel at 13 years-old to try DIYs and fun little crafts. Then it slowly turned into more, I realized I had an impact on peoples lives, and I could make people smile by honestly sharing my life and experiences. I started vlogging mine and my family's days, always incorporating positive messaging into my videos. My goal was and still is to make people laugh and smile, to feel safe when they watch my videos! Because you created your youtube channel at a young age, what did you learn and what advice would you give to a creator? I’ve been making 1 video a week minimum since I turned 13. I’ve taken a lot of criticism and I’ve received a lot of love. Something that’s helped me is remembering the people that truly love you and enjoy your vibe and who you are will stick around and support you. Keep going for people who’s days you make, want to make a positive impact.

Make videos for your memories, make it for you. Sharing your videos can be amazing and inspire others, but remember you’re making videos cause it makes YOU happy, and sometimes that can get lost when you want to please others. Another quote that’s helped me is “We are what we believe we are”. Believe in yourself, and love how uniquely wonderful you are. Why was it important for you to take a gap year? I was all over the place senior year, I didn’t know what I wanted. I needed this year off to try new things, and see what I could make of this year. I think if I went to college right away I always would’ve questioned what my gap year could’ve been. During your journey, what did you discover? During my gap year journey I learned a lot about myself. I learned I love my people, my friends and family mean the world to me. Moving into an apartment alone at 18 was the worst decision I could’ve made. I don’t think I had ever felt so lost and lonely and worthless in that apartment alone. I realized that social media isn’t everything, and I want an education, I want my family, and I want my friends. So I broke my lease and moved back home. I have felt such an enormous difference in my happiness and productivity since being back here. Aside from the loneliness I learned more about being a waitress, more about being an artist, being a realtor, learning about different jobs was incredible! I needed this year to truly look at myself in the mirror and figure out who I am and what I want to do. It was a huge growing year, and I’m very thankful I’ve learned so much from it. You’ve created a palette in collaboration with sugar rush x tarte cosmetics, can you talk about what you wanted to achieve with this amazing collaboration? I wanted this palette to be very versatile. It’s a full-face palette with a variety of colors you can use anywhere you desire a little glow! I wanted it to be simple so you could use it on the go with your fingers if you don’t have a brush! I wanted the packaging to be bright and colorful with sunset/sunrise colors. The messaging behind the sun colors are the beginning and end of the day. I wanted to emphasize that every day is a new start and can be as amazing as you make it. You’ve also created Starlite Village, a sustainable and affordable jewelry brand, what’s the story of the brand and what’s the message about it? Starlite Village is my pride and joy! It started just with simple jewelry, but we’re branching out to clothing and accessories. The messaging behind the products will always remain positive. I want whatever you’re putting on from Starlite to know its made with love to remind you that you are amazingly unique and perfect. Everyone should know their value and how precious their life is! I want my products to be full of light and positivity from the packaging to the material itself. There’s no time to wear things that don’t make you feel confident, comfortable, and help you embrace who you are. What’s next for you? Since quarantine happened I’ve signed up for some college courses. I’ve been applying to colleges for this fall semester which is also exciting! I am also working on projects whether its a series for my channel or something new for Starlite! I’m keeping busy and staying safe while in quarantine as I hope everyone reading is as well!

RUDY PANKOW

WORDS BY LYNA ALLET PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLY BALCH

We all know the Netflix success show: Outer Banks, as it was one of the most talked show during the last months, especially during the quarantine. The Plot? The Pogues, a group of teenagers, living in the Outer Banks, are going on an adventure to find a long lost treasure that John B’s dad tried to find but failed. But the research of a treasure, pair up with problems along the way. Even if you’re unfamiliar with the show, you know some of the characters, particularly JJ, the free-spirited teen, member of the Pogues, along with John B, Pope, and Kiara. He’s played by Rudy Pankow, who soon became the new Netflix's heartthrob, we’re seduced by his loyalty, his kind heart, and his fearless attitude. As he says in the show, he has nothing to lose. Apart from this, there are some other characteristics he may have in common with JJ: “ We both share this black sheep kind of characteristic. We sometimes go off and just do our own thing cause we feel that’s what’s best. Our bursts of natural energy. And the love of adventure.” It’s the first role of the 21-year-old actor, so, we can expect him to be a little bit nervous? “Not nervous, more anxious to get the camera rolling to figure out what works and what doesn’t.” For this show, the bar is high. Featuring almost only new talents, we can only imagine how the casting phase was hard and with big expectations. “I honestly wasn’t sure if we had the part quite yet... I had gone through such an extensive auditioning process, I wasn’t entirely sure if I actually got the part. When I found out I had truly gotten the part I was of course very happy and excited” And we can understand him. The most talented surfer of the Outer Banks (even John B say so), fans favorite for his look and personality, numerous people would kill to play the part. But besides the bubbly and caring personality of JJ, a lot is hiding behind that happiness: His conflicting relationship with his dad. Something he eventually wants to see more of this relation and the evolution of it in a possible season 2: “ I hope JJ will find a new layer of himself that wasn’t expressed in season 1. Perhaps JJ finds a new way to deal with his father.” We also want to see more of JJ, more of his struggles, his feelings... We can only hope that the reckless surfer isn’t done surprising us with a new challenge. “I love that JJ has a heart, I hate I can’t give him advice on when to use it.” Even if JJ’s adventure is only at the beginning, Rudy Pankow is currently working on new projects. A secret project for now, because of the current pandemic and the future of the entertainment industry. “I have things in the works, but at the current moment I can’t speak on it any more than that due to the uncertainty of the industry and when things can be announced.” But the project he’d like to join? “ I would love to be in Peaky Blinders or Black Mirror.” Outer Banks will easily become your new favorite teenage show, with a great plot, mysteries, and a sudden urge to move in the Outer Banks, finding a treasure. Still not convinced? “Outer Banks is the show that’ll shatter your expectations of young teen drama. It’s a super fun bumpy ride that will keep you wanting more.” And we couldn’t possibly agree more with Rudy. (Outer Banks, season 1 available on Netflix everywhere)

MATTHEW SOLOMON

What can you tell us about your new movie Followed. What is your role in the film? Followed is a new take on the found footage style horror movie. It centers around my character, Mike, a narcissistic social media influencer who focuses on haunting sightings all around Los Angeles. What’s cool about this movie is it’s from the perspective of a mysterious somebody watching Mike’s video blogs on their own screen. You may not like Mike very much at first, but hopefully by the end you’ll see he’s a big softie. Oh and it’s quite scary. This is your first lead role in a film. What are your goals for your career in the next five years? Any specific directors or co-stars on your wish list? Work work work. I love really toned down personal stories, so directors like Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach (couple goals) would be amazing to work with. Laura Dern in A Marriage Story , directed by Baumbach, is one of those actors who can clearly think on their feet and throw it back at you. Those are the actors I want to work with, Jon Hamm is someone I look up to for the same reason. Joe Swanberg, who directs a lot of mumblecore, is someone I dream of working with. I love improvising on camera, and a lot of what I do in Followed is improvised. Going forward, I want to follow the indie film route, while buffing up my tv resume. I’d love to find myself landing some more queer roles. I seem to get cast as the affable straight boyfriend a lot, I would love to see some queer content. Another dream costar - Alexandra Billings, who stars in Transparent , is a good friend and one of my acting teachers. I would love to be cast in something with her because she is an absolute powerhouse. How have you been keeping your self busy during quarantine? What is the first thing you will want to do when it is over/what have you been missing most? First thing when quarantine is over? I want to travel to see my brother who started a job in Switzerland just before the pandemic. If we’re very lucky I’ll be seeing him in the winter for some skiing. I moved into my own apartment maybe a month before quarantine, and I’ve become quite the interior designer with all this time. I didn’t even have my own forks and knives when I moved in. Living alone for the first time during a pandemic has presented its challenges, so I’m teaching myself to play a piano I bought on Craigslist. Having creative outlets is super important right now, but my poor neighbors are hearing me play a lot of sour chords. I fantasize about when we’re told it’s ok to fully return to our daily lives. When that happens I want drinks, good music, tons of friends, and dancing. And I’ve been safely protesting/supporting activism organizations for the Black Lives Matter movement. Always wear a mask! What are your recommendations to others for your favorite books, music and films, besides Followed, for readers to enjoy during this time? I just read the book and watched the tv adaptation Normal People . Written by Sally Rooney, and streamed on Hulu. Both versions made me cry. The graphic novel, Blankets, by Craig Thomas is heart wrenching. It’s about a straight illustrator grappling with his religious upbringing, surprisingly I found myself relating his story to my own experience coming out of the closet. Speaking of grappling with religion, I just watched Unorthodox on Netflix. Also made me cry. Seems I love stories that make me cry. I’m also a sucker for cartoons, so I’m rewatching all of my favorites: Steven Universe, Over the Garden Wall, The Last Airbender , the good stuff. If I were to give two movie recommendations, it would be The Handmaiden , directed by Park ChanWook, and Your Name , directed by Makoto Shinkai Where can we find you on social media? Follow me @ThatMatthewSolomon on Instagram and @SadDiscoBoy on Twitter. I don’t even know how to properly use twitter, but I’m on it! You can watch me play bad piano on my Instagram stories sometimes.

For those who have not yet seen it, please tell us the story behind your series “NOS4A2.” How does your character fit into the story? The series NOS4A2 is based off Joe Hill's novel by the same title. It's such a cool and trippy concept the best way I can describe it is this: In real life, when you, or I, or anyone hears a song at a concert, sees a movie, walks into a building, reads a book, essentially we're experiencing the physical manifestation of someone else's imagination. The world of NOS4A2 takes that truth to the Nth degree and "strong creatives" can create a separate physical world from their thoughts that other people can interact with and experience. Charlie Manx is a strong creative who kidnaps "neglected" children from their families and brings them to Christmasland, his own world of thought, where he builds an army of bloodthirsty demon children. The only other person who has the enough power to stop this evil Father Christmas and save the souls of all these children is Vic Mcqueen. My character, Detective Tabitha Hutter, is investigating one missing girl and her murdered mother when she meets Vic Mcqueen. The character of Det. Hutter tries to serve as a liaison between the real world law enforcement and the world of thought forces. The first season Hutter is initially very skeptical however she eventually teams up with Mcqueen to aid in the fight against Charlie Manx. You have done a lot of cool work in your career thus far, what are your goals for your career in the next five years? Any specific directors or co-stars on your wish list? Lots of goals. Before the pandemic hit I was set to shoot an action/ mystery crime feature film I was really excited about but production is postponed. Nevertheless I've been mainintaing training in basic fight choreography and light stunts in preparation for production. There is so much incredible content and creative people working right now. I want to work with the people who really inspire me. At the moment I am crazy about Michaela Coel and her new series I May Destroy You,. Other works that inspire me are RAMY, Killing Eve, Fleabag. etc. I am aiming to do more theater in the next 5 years. I just finished the Homecoming podcast with Catherine Keener and Oscar Issac and that is absolutely the kind of story-telling medium I would love to dive into more. Voice-over and audiobooks as well. One of the most important authors I've read in the past year is Geshe Kelsang Gyasto and a goal of mine is to record his audiobook. How have you been keeping yourself busy during quarantine? What is the first thing you will want to do when it is over/what have you been missing most? Quarantine has really allowed me to take personal inventory and analyze how I feel about myself and what productivity looks like. During quarantine I have been journaling a lot, listening to podcasts, reading, watching inspiring and informative lectures on Youtube. I'm most looking forward to sitting in a cafe again with a book or my computer and just passing time. What are your recommendations to others for your favorite books, music and films/tv shows (besides “NOS4A2”), for readers to enjoy during this time? Always happy to give recommendations! As I mentioned RAMY on Hulu is an incredible show. Michaela Coel's I May Destroy You on HBO is a must see. I'm very proud to say NOS4A2 shares the same network with the incredible show Killing Eve on AMC and BBC America. In terms of podcasts I recommend Revisionist History, This American Life, ArmChair Expert with Dax Shepard. Where can we find you on social media? Instagram: @romansash Twitter: @romans_ash

What can you tell us about your new movie Followed. What is your role in the film? Followed is a really fun modern day found footage horror movie based on the supposed haunted Cecil Hotel in Downtown LA. What makes it really different is instead of a regular cast, you have a YouTube vlogger team trying to survive and debunk the myths of the hotel. I play Danni, one of the team of 4 staying at the hotel. Danni was especially fun for me because she is a "behind the scenes" kind of girl, she's very level headed and low maintenance. which makes me a really good middle man in the room. I usually play pretty upper class and typical "cute girl" roles, so to get the wardrobe of a 14 year old boy mixed with the lines of a seasoned trucker...it was a blast. We see that you have worked in both film and television. Do you prefer one over the other? What are your goals for your career in the next five years? Any specific directors or co-stars on your wish list? Yes! I love both so much, but film has always been my first love. There is this "summer camp syndrome" that happens on movie sets, where you spend the bulk of your time for weeks with the same humans. You get so attached, you develop routines and inside jokes, and then you get to have this 90 minute memory bank of what you created to go back to. TV moves so much faster, so I hope in the up-coming years to book a solid character arc over a few episodes so I can really dig into a specific character/view point and also get the enjoyment of the on-set day to day! I am dying to work with a female director, like Ava DuVernay, the likes of which I haven't gotten to experience yet. What have you been doing to keep yourself busy during quarantine? What have you been missing most? Oh man. I first have to say I am SO lucky that I and my family are healthy. I am so grateful to everyone working to keep us that way, and I am at a loss for anyone who has experienced true hardship right now. I am very lucky to have a podcast to keep me really busy, called One Broke Actress. It centers around the industry and the day to day work in it, and actors have been really chomping at the bit to get any info on what they can be doing now, learning new things in this time, and what they can expect or prepare for in the coming months. I am so happy to help give them that. I also have three rescue dogs who keep me very busy. In terms of what I miss,I do really miss my acting classes (I study at John Rosenfeld and UCB for Improv), the ability to sit and listen to another person is such a huge part of acting and it isn't the same over a Zoom call. I also weirdly miss using my chapsticks outside of the house, they really ruin a mask haha. What are your recommendations to others for your favorite books, music and films, besides Followed, for readers to enjoy during this time? I just finished watching Mad Men from the beginning as well as all the Harry Potter movies (that my fiance had never seen!) and that was an absolute blast, if you're looking for something to take your mind off the world. I am reading so many books at the same time haha: White Fragility and Check Your Privilege have been astronomical in helping me understand and be an ally in the Black Lives Matter movement (as did the movie 13th on Netflix). If you're a "slight scary but not too much" person, I just finished and really loved The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. And I am also a heavy podcast listener, The Hollywood Reporter's Top Five, Daily Stoic, Hype Girl Podcast, and Diet Starts Tomorrow and a few of my day to day listens! #BLACKLIVESMATTER Words by Lyna Allet I am going to be completely honest here: I struggled a lot to find the right words for this piece. Not because I don’t know what to write, but because I am a white woman and it’s not my place to speak about racism because I never experienced it (racism against white people doesn’t exist). If you find a petition, sign it. Donate, if you can’t, there are multiple videos on YouTube where the money from the ads goes to associations. Go to a protest. We need to end white supremacy. Police brutality needs to stop and the officers need to be held accountable for their inhuman act. Because we should all listen and learn, below, I listed up numerous businesses blackowned that we should support, books to read, podcasts to listen and petitions to sign. Remember that Black Lives Matter. Men, women, LGBT+,religious, non religious… All Black Lives Matter. We demand justice.

HAVEN INTERVIEW BY LYNA ALLET PHOTOGRAPHY BY STORM SANTOS

26

While fresh to the pop music scene, Haven has been touring the nation since age 15 with major country acts Thomas Rhett, Lady Antebellum, Toby Keith and Hunter Hayes. Haven launched her new sound in November 2019 with the release of “Swimming In Your Feelings” which debuted on Radio Disney, hitting #6 on their Top Radio Disney Songs chart, and went viral on TikTok, reaching 12 million+ users and listened to 1 million+ times on the platform in just the first week of its release. It has currently been listened to on TikTok 2.5 million+ times and hit #2 on Radio Disney’s Top 3 songs of the day on November 25th. Following the success of her debut single, Haven has gone on to release three more charting singles this year. Selena Gomez co-signed her February release “Be With You”, while her single “Sad and Successful” went viral on Triller. Her most recent release, “RN” debuted at the end of May. ... Hi Haven, can you tell me a little about yourself. How did you get your start and what inspired you to start making music? Heyy! I’m Haven :) I’m originally from a town of about 1,600 people called Moville, Iowa. I make music, I have 3 brothers, my favorite snack is cheeto puffs and I’m excited to be doing this interview with y’all! Music was always something I loved ever since I can remember. My mom took me to my first concert to see Shania Twain when I was four years old and I looked up at her and said “I want to do that”. I’d always had the dream of selling out stadiums. I bought a guitar with my birthday money when I was 9 and started writing songs but I didn’t start really pursuing music seriously until I was 12. I started fronting a band, doing around 100 dates a year, traveling to Nashville to be in writing sessions every day and take meetings. Then I homeschooled all of high school to be traveling and pursuing music as well. I lived in my band trailer at age 15 with my mo, so I could be touring and writing in Nashville. Then at around 19, I started traveling to LA to write for this pop project. So, it’s pretty much been my everything for a while now. :) How would you describe the kind of music you make? I would say it’s a mix of Bazzi and Julia Michaels! Your song “Be With You” is heating up the Radio Disney Charts, congrats. Can you tell me a bit about how that song came about? What was the writing process? Thank you so much!! The process for writing “Be With You” was super rare. I was in a session and we had already written 2 songs that day. We had 30 minutes left and figued we’d try to knock out one more idea before I left. We ended up writing the whole song in 20 minutes. It literally felt like “Be With You” fell out of the sky. We wrote it faster than we could type it. That almost never happens, but it’s so cool when it does. Do you have any rituals before you go up on stage? I jump around like a crazy person and eat junk food. I probably should try to save my energy but oh well. If you could collaborate with any musician or band, who would it be and why? I would love to collab with Julia Michaels, Bazzi, Selena, and Shawn Mendes. I’m big fans of all of them.

Who are you currently listening to? I’m currently listening to the “RARE” album by Selena Gomez! You support various wonderful foundations like the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research or the Teens for Jeans Campaign, what inspired you to support these causes? I started becoming involved with The Rally Foundation for kids with cancer in Nashville around 13 years old. I started singing at events to help raise money and when I did that I learned that only 4% of federal government cancer research is going towards studying pediatric cancer. That is just unacceptable in my eyes and something I didn’t realize until I became involved with Rally. I’ve met so many incredible, smart, beautiful kids and it breaks my heart to see a child going through any type of illness. Kids should be outside playing with their friends, not stuck in a hospital bed. Teens For Jeans is such an amazing foundation where you can drop off jeans you’re not wearing at your local Aeropostale and they will be given to teens who need them! It’s such a simple way to help out and it goes a long way! I absolutely love working with them as well. When you aren’t working, what do you like to do in your free time? In my free time I like to watch The Bachelor, go hiking or do anything outdoors really and hang with my brothers. You currently splits your time between Nashville and Los Angeles. Which city do you like the most? I love both cities for different reasons. I love Los Angeles more and more the longer I spend time here. The weather’s amazing, the production talent for music is on another level, and I thankfully have my management family here which has been one of the biggest blessings. I don’t think I could stay here as much as I do if it wasn’t for my manager being so welcoming and making it feel like home to me while I’m here. So so thankful! Nashville is truly home to me though. I’ve been going there since I was 12 and my family lives there now so it is my home base. I love how it’s country and city at the same time. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families affected by the tornadoes in Nashville recently. Nashville is such a strong, close community and I am so thankful to call it home. If you would like to donate to the disaster relief please go to https://www.redcross.org/local/tennessee/about-us/locations/nashvillearea.html! Social media has helped you grow your music quite a lot! Which ones your favorite? Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter, Snapchat or Facebook?

Instagram I spend way too much time on there lol. I try to reply to every single comment. What’s the best fan interaction you have had so far? I think my favorite fan interactions have been the Tik Tok videos they make to my songs. I absolutely LOVE watching the videos they make, it’s so fun and sweet. It makes my day to see them dancing or acting out the words. Love it! Last question, what can fans expect from you in 2020? Lots of new music! I was supposed to tour with Dinah Jane, but the tour has been put on hold until COVID has cleared. I can’t wait to go out on the road and perform for a live audience again! I’m SO EXCITED!!
