editorial Hello! Welcome to the first issue of The Scallywag magazine for Leek, Cheadle and the surrounding Staffordshire Moorland areas. When I moved here last year, I wasn’t sure what was going on in my local area – whether there was any baby and toddler groups, what classes there were at the children’s centre or what was happening at the local library. I’m hoping to bring all of that information to one place, making the Scallywag magazine a vital resource for parents and carers. In this issue, we focus on the admission process for primary schools as the deadline is just after Christmas. We go out and about to World of Wedgwood in Barlaston and Peak Wildlife Park in Winkhill, both recently reopened to the public. And, we have included lots of ideas to keep you and your family busy over half term. An important aim of The Scallywag is to support the local community and local businesses. I would like to say an enormous thank you to the advertisers in the magazine as it is because of them that this magazine can be distributed for free, so please support them too! By supporting small, local businesses, you will support your local economy and help to continue to build a strong community. If you have any ideas or feedback, or you think that I’ve missed something important, I’d love to hear from you. I really hope that you enjoy reading the magazine. See you again next issue!

front cover For our first front cover, I decided to try an autumn themed craft activity with my daughter, Betty, aged 2. We created our painting using cotton buds dipped into red, orange, yellow and brown paints. These were then dotted randomly onto cardboard circles which were stuck onto a piece of paper. I then helped by painting the tree trunks. We had lots of fun and it wasn’t too messy! For more arts and crafts ideas, follow us on pinterest: www.pinterest.com/ScallywagLeek

Closure of Children’s centres in Staffordshire moorlands
n April 2015, changes were made to the way that the children’s centres were used across Staffordshire and the services that they provided. This has meant that Staffordshire County Council can focus on funding and providing services that are delivered in the family home, supporting families most in need. The aim is to reach vulnerable families who would most benefit from the support that is provided; however the county council found that it was these families that were not using the services. The amount of children’s centres across Staffordshire was reduced from 57 to 11. Staffordshire Moorlands Children’s Centre in Biddulph will continue to operate as a children’s centre providing a range of services and activities. Other
sites such as the Beresford Centre in Leek have become ‘family hubs’ whilst in other locations, services will be provided in community centres, schools and libraries. The move was criticised by some parents who felt that they would lose vital support as a result of cutbacks. But Mr Lawrence, who is Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for Children, argued that: “The number of children ready to learn and grow when they start school simply isn’t high enough. In particular, the difference in readiness between children from the most deprived parts of Staffordshire and the rest of the county is unacceptable and I intend to do something about it. “Instead of persuading people in need of more help to come to their nearest children’s centre, which frankly isn’t reaching enough families, we need to change our approach so that we focus

Tara Burndred brings home world championship... again!
T
ara Burndred, who runs the Tatsu Kai Dojo martial arts and wellbeing centre in Cresswell, made a remarkable return to ju-jitsu in 2013 after taking a long abÂŹsence from the sport to raise her two children.
Just months after making her comeback, Tara, 4th Dan Black Belt with the TKJJA, won the individual gold in the 78kg and over category at the 2013 world championships. She has just returned from Geneva where she was triumphant in defending her world championship at the 2015 World Ju-jitsu Championships. Now, the double world champion, business woman and mother of two is passing on her knowledge of her discipline to others. Tara’s dojo (martial arts training centre) is located at the Blythe Business Park in Cresswell and provides space for people of all ages to enjoy the sport. The new business
has already proved to be a success and recently won a recommendation from Staffordshire Business Award for Most Promising Start-Up and Tara was runner up in the Stoke on Trent Sentinel Sport Personality Awards 2015. The dojo runs a range of classes which include junior and adult ju-jitsu self defence, which give you and your child the skills to stay safe and are taught in a fun, safe and friendly environment by world class instructors. But that’s not all; if you suffer from low self esteem, post-natal depression, generally feel down or just want to get fit, Tara recommends trying the Kairo Kave or Kairo Box classes which have been created using ju-jitsu and martial arts fitness exercises and are a dynamic way of using all of your muscles to create the ultimate cardio workout. They are great for lifting your mood. The team at the dojo work with local teams, individuals and schools in fitness and self defence.
Tara’s dojo have been sponsored over the past year by M-Viron Ltd, Cross-Deck Ltd, London Road Oakcakes, Blythe Bridge Rotary and has received funding from South Moorlands District Council and The Police Crime Commisionors Fund. The project is a community interest project and isn’t profit related so support from the public using the facilities is appreciated. The dojo has become the place to train to get results as well as meeting new people in a great environment. For more information you can contact Tara on 07742240973 or like the Facebook page for more information about classes: www. facebook.com/ Tatsukaijujitsu.
Peak Wildlife Park Winkhill, Near Leek, ST13 7QR 01538 308880 www.peakwildlifepark.co.uk
T
he Peak Wildlife Park has recently opened on the grounds of what used to be known as Blackbrook Zoological Park. The new park includes large enclosures that you are able to walk through, getting up close and personal with the animals. There is a much bigger emphasis on wildlife conservation and the park has moved away from the traditional cages and aviaries.
I took my little girl, Betty, who is nearly two, on a Saturday. We drove there; it was well sign posted so it was easy to find and the car park is free. Entrance to the park was ÂŁ8.95 for adults. Children aged two and under are free. The park is a work in progress and so the site where the animals are is quite small. It took us less than two hours to explore the whole park but it was still good value for money. My daughter loved watching the penguins swimming. We timed our visit well and were able to watch them being fed. There are windows in their pool so that we were able to watch them diving under the water to get their food. The immersive experiences were great. In the lemur enclosure, the animals seem happy and healthy. They did not seem concerned or frightened by us; in fact, one came to sit next to us on the bench to have a look in my handbag much to the delight of my daughter. The member of staff who was in the enclosure was friendly and seemed very
knowledgeable. I asked her whether it was not quite stressful for the animals to have people (especially little people squealing with happiness!) wandering through their territory. She explained that there are plenty of places for the lemurs to hide but they are actually quite curious and seem to enjoy the company. The wallaby enclosure was also large and open. There were children who were being quiet enough so that the wallabies were coming over to be petted. No such luck with our child. An excited shriek of “cuddle! soon sent them hopping away. I enjoyed watching the mother wallaby with a Joey in her pouch, who was peacefully relaxing near a bench. The only enclosure that we didn’t feel was as impressive was the tortoise’s who, sadly, has worn a path around the edge from spending the day walking around and around. My daughter loved poking her hand through the fence and touching him but I felt a little bit sorry for him. I would recommend taking a picnic. There are a few different picnic areas; one has little cars for the children to play in and there is one by the penguins so that you can watch them playing and swimming. The food from the cafe is limited. There is no hot food, just readymade sandwiches and there wasn’t a lot of choice. However, the cake made up for it: delicious and huge slices. There is also a large play area which, although busy, my little girl enjoyed and burned off that final bit of energy so that she slept all afternoon. They had a bouncy castle and a sand pit too.
As the site is quite small, you are never far away from the toilets which have baby-changing facilities (only in the ladies’ toilets). There is also a souvenir shop as you enter and exit the zoo. The most impressive change, aside from the enclosures, is the accessibility of the park. The paths are wide and smooth meaning that manoeuvring a pram or a mobility scooter is no problem. Overall, it is worth a visit, especially as they continue to expand and add to the menagerie. Apparently, there are rumours that there will be tigers next year, although I don’t think members of the public will be able to walk through their enclosure!

Winter fun at BEAVER HALL
Y
ou might think that here at Beaver Hall we slow down over the colder months. Maybe we put our feet up, drink hot chocolate and sit in front of a roaring fire looking out over the lovely views of the peaks. Well, that is not the case!
There is still plenty going on here all through the winter. On top of running equestrian events all year round, we also have visits from schoolchildren, families and toddlers who enjoy learning about the countryside and animals. We believe in getting children outside and they enjoy exploring our nature trail, seeing the changing seasons and the weather. Our pets’ corner is also open all year and, as it is undercover, it is great for a rainy day. Children can hold guinea pigs, rabbits, bearded dragons and more. They can also meet our three meerkats. Our lovely, warm cafe provides hot food and drinks – muddy boots are welcome! And, of course, there’s Christmas to look forward to. Every year, Santa pays us a visit bringing his magical animals with him. Children can visit him here in his grotto in December. So come along and join in the fun!

Supporting Local Businesses at Christmas
And with good reason too. Successful local businesses boost the local economy and can even raise the value of your house if you are near a thriving town centre. They help to build communities and support local entrepreneurs and workers. By buying locally, you can reduce your environmental impact. And my favourite reason to support small, businesses: you know that your money is more likely to be helping a local family to survive, rather than paying for an exotic holiday for the managing
director of a huge company! Christmas sales can account for over a third of a retailer’s turnover – a bad Christmas can spell disaster for a small business. So, how can we support small businesses this Christmas? Buy Christmas gifts from local, independent shops or from the Christmas markets. They are more likely to be quirky and interesting and the receiver is unlikely to get duplicated gifts. You will benefit from better customer service and personalised recommendations. Buying wrapping paper and Christmas cards from the market is often cheaper too. Ask local beauty therapists or holistic therapists if they sell gift vouchers rather than purchasing gifts for people. You could give a busy mum an hour of relaxation and pampering rather than another scented candle! Buy your Christmas party outfit from a local designer or a local shop – it is more likely to be one of a kind so you won’t turn up at the office party wearing the same thing as somebody else. Look around the farmer’s markets and local butchers for your Christmas food.
It is better for the environment as it has been produced locally and it is better for you as the less it has had to travel, the more nutrients it will contain. Find out what events are happening at local businesses, for example visiting Santa at a local farm will give your child a much more personalised experience. Enjoy a meal in your local pub or restaurant rather a chain restaurant. You know the food will be better prepared! As a festive treat, why not treat a loved one to a visit to a local restaurant that you have never been to before. Small Business Saturday will be held on 5th December 2015. Visit the website: https://www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk. com/ to use the small business finder which finds small businesses near to you.

fter a £34 million revamp, the World of Wedgwood has recently reopened. It has a new factory tour with more hands on experiences. The new website promises “play areas which will offer hours of fun for the younger visitor.” So, we decided to check it out...
It didn’t take us long to find it as it is well signposted; however, I think it would be difficult to get there by public transport. The car park is free. They are open 10am – 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am – 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. It is £7.50 for the museum and children aged 5 or under are free. The factory tour is still not quite finished so we were able to do a preview which we were not charged for. The first thing that we spotted was the outdoor play area which has huge pottery themed wickerwork objects that children can play in. Although it looks great, there isn’t really much for children to do. After playing ‘peek-a-boo!’ in
one of the wickerwork installations and playing on the rope swing for 10 minutes, we decided to head inside. The factory tour, despite being incomplete, was very interesting. Many of the exhibits are interactive. Our little girl, Betty, enjoyed touching and looking at the displays, whilst my husband and I had a bit of a giggle at some of the amusing names for the tools used to produce the ceramics. In the factory, there is the opportunity to visit the ‘Master Craft studio’ where a skilled worker will help you to make your own pot on a potter’s wheel. There is an extra charge of £10 to do this. We decided that Betty was too young to have a go but we enjoyed watching some older children. The helpers seemed really friendly, patient and skilful. The museum is very modern, clean and well-presented. There are digital, interactive displays which have interesting and relevant information. I learnt a lot but my little girl got bored very quickly. Next, we went to the Dining Hall for some lunch. There is an indoor play
area which contains a huge ball pit and a few ride-on toys. It is very clean and has a fairyland theme. But there still wasn’t very much for my little girl to do. There are no activity sheets or colouring in papers so, again, she got bored. The food was delicious and we thought the children’s menu was very reasonably priced. For £4.50, Betty had sausages and mash and a bowl of ice cream. Attached to the Dining Hall is the Decorating Studio where, for £12.50, you can design and decorate your own piece of crockery. We didn’t visit the tea rooms as they looked lovely but expensive. The crockery looked quite delicate so we didn’t think taking a rampaging toddler in would be a good idea. I did have a quick look around the shop but I didn’t find any bargains this time. Overall, it was an expensive day out. I think that older children would enjoy the experience a lot more but the additional charges for the creative activities seemed steep. It is not really an engaging place to take toddlers; the boast of “hours of fun” on the website might be a little bold in my humble opinion. There is much more that could be done to keep little ones entertained. By Natalie Brown

hen it comes to Christmas shopping, I’m usually inclined to leave it until the last minute, order it all online and then feel smug that it will all be delivered the next day and I don’t have to face the mayhem of the shops. But this year, it’s going to be different. This year, having set up a small business myself, I am determined to buy all of my Christmas shopping from small, local businesses.

You may have already decided which school you want your child to attend or you might be wondering how to choose a school. Either way, it’s worth attending your local schools’ open evenings, meeting the teachers, and having a good look at the prospectuses so that you can see what the different schools have to offer. You could also read each school’s most recent Ofsted report and have a good look at each school’s website to see their policies and what extra-curricular activities the schools provide. You should also consider how your child will get to school as very few children are entitled to any help with travel costs. Once you have had a look at the schools in your area, choose your first, second and third school preferences. Be realistic about the schools that you apply for. Although the great majority of parents and carers in Staffordshire get one of their preferred schools, it is important that you consider the possibility of your school preferences not being met, particularly if your preference is for a school that is not within your catchment area. Staffordshire County
Council recommend that you include your catchment school as one of your preferences otherwise you won’t be considered for a place there. It is advisable to make more than one preference. You won’t have more chance of getting your child into a particular school if you only list that school (or if you list more than once!). The order in which you have listed your preferences is only used if you could be offered more than one of your choices. Then, you will be offered the highest one on your application. Make sure that you understand the admissions criteria for each of your preferences so that you know what order of priority you will be given for each preference. You can find the schools’ criteria on their websites. Decide how you want to apply. You can apply online from the 2nd November 2015. This is the easiest way to apply. Or, if you would prefer, you can download, print and fill in the paper application form. During the spring term 2016, all of the applications are processed. All of the applications are considered at the same time; you won’t be given any priority by getting your application in early. Some Important Points: - If you don’t make an application, you will be offered a place at the nearest school with a place available after all of the other applications have been dealt with. - A place will not automatically be reserved for your child at any school,
even at the school that is closest to where you live. An application must always be made, even if you want your child to attend the catchment area school. - Attendance at the nursery class of your preferred school will not give your child any priority for admission into Reception class. - If your child has an elder sibling at your preferred school, you must still make an application. Available places will then allocated using the school’s criteria. - If your application is late, it will be considered alongside those applicants who applied on time, wherever possible. Where it is not possible, because places have already been allocated, then late applicants will be considered only after those applicants who applied by the published closing date. A late application does not affect the right of appeal or the right to be places on a school’s waiting list. - Applications for admission to school on behalf of children with Special Educational Needs but without Statements will be treated in the same way as all other applications. If you change your mind after you have submitted your application, you can change your preferences up to 15 January 2016 by writing to or emailing the admissions team. If you wish to change your preferences after the notification date you will need to email admissions@staffordshire.gov.uk and your application will be administered in line with the late applications process.
