editorial Happy New Year! This issue I am excited to introduce Jessica Smith, the outdoor learning consultant from Muddy Puddles. Jessica will be writing regular articles for The Scallywag about the value of outdoor education, giving parents and teachers more ideas about how to get children outside. Rather worryingly, my health visitor told me that we are seeing cases of rickets again in this country. Rickets is a condition that affects bone development in children and is caused by a lack of vitamin D. The good news is that rickets can easily be prevented by eating a diet that includes vitamin D and calcium, as well as spending some time in sunlight. So, we have been getting outside and enjoying the beautiful countryside that we have in the Moorlands. We are looking forward to watching out for the signs of spring and getting involved in ‘Springwatch’. Also in this issue, we go out and about to Cadbury World in Birmingham, and Consall Nature Park near Leek. We look at costeffective, environmentally friendly ways to approach your spring cleaning and we have an article about reading with young children and babies. Thank you to everyone that telephoned, emailed and wrote to me to say how much they enjoyed the last issue of the magazine. I’m really pleased that so many people found it interesting and useful. Of course, the magazine could not exist if it was not for the advertisers so please have a look at their input and support these local businesses. Thank you to all my readers, contributors, distributors and advertisers. I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as I enjoyed putting it all together.

news A PHOENIX CHRISTMAS

A

ll Saints’ Church was full for The Phoenix Singers’ Christmas concert. Mince pies, mulled wine and Totally Locally stalls accompanied a live performance of the choir’s new CD “A Christmas Carol”. The first half of the concert included songs and carols by both The Phoenix Singers and Young Phoenix as well as Dickensian themed drama from Longsdon Amateur Dramatic Society. A special guest in the audience was Deborah MacAndrew who, previously a star of TV’s Coronation Street and now an award winning dramatist, wrote the words for “A Christmas Carol” with the music written by choir’s own musical director Ashley Thompson. This touching and witty adaptation uses well known carols and new songs to retell the famous story, combining contemporary and traditional Christmas music. The piece has now been heard not only in Leek but also Lichfield, Stockport and Crewe as local groups warm to this attractive addition to the Christmas repertoire. With sales of the CD further spreading news of this piece it is hoped that it becomes a Christmas favourite. To hear a sample go to youtube: https://youtu.be/USjXwLlBrTs A new year starts, the choirs begin rehearsals, welcoming new members and looking forward to another great year. An early chance to see Young Phoenix will be on February 6th at Trinity Church at a concert in aid of @21 Youth Club one of the many Staffordshire youth groups in need of support following county cutbacks. Later on in the year Young Phoenix will be celebrating its 10th birthday with a “songs from the shows” celebration in June, it’s not too late for any youngsters who like singing to join and be part of what will be a very special occasion. Young Phoenix enter into local life by regularly singing at charity events, in the past year undertaking a small concert with entry being donations to Leek Food Bank and a concert with The Phoenix Singers in aid of Lov4Leah charity.

Signs of Spring at Beaver Hall Park Farm

t’s our favourite time of year at Beaver Hall Park Farm as we welcome lots of new arrivals. Spring officially arrives at the beginning of March, so we are beginning to look out for those first signs already. So, what should you be looking for to know that spring is on its way?

On warm days, you might see queen bumblebees that have successfully survived the winter and are now seeking nectar and pollen from the spring flowers. Bare, leafless trees will begin to bud ready to burst into leaf. We have over 12,000 trees planted over 60 acres. Let your children roam wild along our nature trail. Chiffchaffs are one of the first birds to arrive back in the UK after migrating to warmer climates over the winter. They can be heard singing their ‘chiff chaff’ song from the tops of trees. Watch out for seven-spot ladybirds which may begin to emerge as early as February. Ladybirds spend the winter asleep or ‘dormant’, nestled in dense vegetation or bark crevices. They hibernate in large groups, often piled on top of one another, to protect them from the worst of the weather. And of course, the baby animals! All the family will enjoy this unique springtime experience. This year, we are looking forward to ducklings, chicks and lambs being born. Come along and visit our friendly farm animals, meet the babies and watch out for the arrival of spring.

Spring cleaning

W

hen it comes to spring cleaning, it is all too easy to reach for expensive, branded products. However, they are often packed with chemicals that may be doing more harm than good. Here are some money saving tips to help you to clean your home in an environmentally friendly way ready for spring.

Try sprinkling bicarbonate of soda onto your carpets overnight to soak up any odours. Vacuum it up in the morning to leave your carpets smelling fresh. You can remove food residue, grime and fingerprints from shiny stainless steel or chrome surfaces with half a lemon. Just slice a lemon in half, put some salt on it and rub it in a circular motion. Then, rinse with water. Tea tree oil is a known antiseptic and is perfect for cleaning toilets and germy parts of the home. Put some plain white vinegar and about a teaspoon of tea tree oil into a spray bottle and spray liberally. Once covered vigorously wipe all affected surfaces, but don’t rinse. It’s also great for removing mould. Clean windows using cold water and white vinegar. A squeegee is recommended for an even spread of the solution, while a clean paper towel works perfect for polishing the windows. The same treatment can be applied to all other glasses from cups to mirrors and porcelain objects. White vinegar also has excellent anti-fungal qualities, so you can make use of it when you want to disinfect your bathroom. You can also mix it with baking soda for a fizzy drain unclogging mix, as long as you do it quickly and you use it right away. Stale coffee grounds, can be used in a number of unexpected ways, one way is to place them in your fridge where they will absorb unpleasant odours. All you have to do is put them in a bowl in the fridge for a couple of days; when you remove them they’ll take all the nasty odours with them and leave a fresh smelling fridge. It’s not just fridges they can help do this with, you can deodorise pretty much anything with coffee grounds. Go to http://greenerlifestyle.wikaniko.com for environmentally friendly products that will keep your house clean and green. Here, you can also find vegan products and degradable bags. Finally, keep your home smelling fresh with a home-made air freshener. Simply mix some baking soda with some essential oil in an empty jar. Close the jar and poke holes in the lid. This will keep your room smelling fresh for a couple of weeks.

R

ecently, whilst watching a game show, it came to light that my husband was not aware that Bourneville was an actual place. And then I found out that, despite being a huge chocolate lover, he’d never been to Cadbury World! We made plans to rectify this on his next day off work. I still have quite vivid memories of my parents taking me to Cadbury World when I was younger, especially how the whole factory grounds smelled like chocolate. I’ve worked out that it must have been about 15 years ago because it was when Cadbury sponsored Coronation Street; I remember seeing the displays of chocolate figures that were used in the adverts. It was a very different experience this time. It is essential to pre-book tickets for the tour which we did online. By booking online, we received a 5% discount on the entry price so it was about £30 for two adults. Our little ones were free as they are both under four.

It took us about an hour and a half to get there. It is possible to get there by train but we decided to go by car. Make sure that you follow the instructions on Cadbury’s website as the SatNav wanted to take us on a different route which would have resulted in us getting stuck in a lot more traffic. There is ample parking when you arrive and it is free. When we arrived, we went straight on the tour. We were given a handful of chocolate bars each to take with us: curly wurlys, dairy milks and crunchies. Yum! It wasn’t too busy as it was a school day, but we did see lots of children on school trips. The tour is self-guided and is made up of lots of different areas. The first part is an interactive exhibit that explains the history of chocolate, starting from the Aztecs. We then found out how chocolate came to Europe and heard the Cadbury story. Each exhibit is presented in a different way using live actors, interactive performances and lively displays so, although there was a lot of information to absorb, my toddler didn’t get bored and my husband and I learned a great deal. The ‘Making Chocolate Story’ exhibition was particularly good fun: a cinema

presentation with special effects. I won’t tell you what happens as it will ruin the surprise if you go. We also enjoyed the ‘Cadabra’ ride which is great for little children but I think that older ones might find it a little bit dull. It was a little bit like the ‘It’s a Small World’ ride at Disneyland. Next we walked through the factory seeing the production lines to get to the ‘Chocolate Making’ area. I think that this was probably my husband’s favourite part of the tour as we were given a pot of warm, liquid Dairy Milk with a variety of toppings to enjoy. You are able to watch chocolatiers demonstrate chocolate making skills and order personalised goodies. Finally we had fun reminiscing whilst watching old Cadbury advertisements, some for chocolates that are no longer made – who remembers Fuse bars?! We exited through the huge gift shop which sells the usual souvenirs and also includes the Factory Zone where you are able to bulk buy chocolate at a discount. We got a few bargains in this bit, including a carrier bag full of Freddos. We had taken a picnic (I’m the kind of person that always has a picnic) but we stopped for a hot drink in the cafe. We both had a cup of tea and a slice of cake which cost just short of £8. There was a large variety of different food options and it didn’t look too overpriced. There were children’s menus available too. On a practical note, we found the facilities very clean. There are two baby changing areas and a feeding area which has comfortable seats. There is also a Changing Places facility with a hoist. Most of the exhibits are wheelchair friendly. Outside, there is even more to see and

do. There is a large play area which was lots of fun and my favourite: the 4D Chocolate Adventure, which was a 4d cinema with motion seats. We also enjoyed ‘The Bourneville Experience’ where we learned how the Bourneville Village came to be built. The only thing that I found disappointing was that just before we left, my little girl asked if she could go on the ‘Cadabra’ ride again. When we asked a member of staff, she told us that it was not possible to revisit any areas of the tour but that did not dampen her spirits as she had had a lovely day. Overall, it was an educational and fun day that I think children and adults of all ages would enjoy. I would like to go again and spend more time exploring Bourneville village itself and all of the old buildings. By Natalie Brown

The value of outdoor learning

A

quote we love at the Muddy Academy and find truly inspiring when it comes to our approach to child development is from the Outdoor Education expert David Pollis. He asks “Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the mountains and the stars up above. Let them look at the beauty of the waters and the trees and flowers on earth. They will then begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education.” Recent research has shown some alarming changes in how children are being brought up and the amount of time they are now given to explore and ‘think’ in nature. The space children have to roam in has decreased by 90% in the last 30 years and they now spend on average up to 6 and ½ hours per day in front of screens. The Wildlife Trust’s recent report titled ‘Rewild your child’ showed 37% of children have never seen a hedgehog and over 50% have never found frogspawn in a pond in the wild. At the Muddy Academy we are on a mission to reverse these trends and inspire children to learn outdoors all your round. We know that time spent learning in the open air leads to healthier bodies, better concentration and bigger imaginations. We are clearly focused on breaking down the most

common barriers to outdoor learning: - We believe ‘there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong kit’ our clothing enables children to spend hours of fun outdoors exploring what nature has to offer - We believe it is more exciting for numeracy to be about estimating the number of leaves on a tree rather than the number of dots on a piece of paper so we provide monthly outdoor learning resources to make it easy for teachers to take learning outdoors - We know that encouragement and rewards for children is the most effective way to reinforce learning we and increase engagement so we provide stickers and certificates for teachers to reward children for being super outdoor explorers We are excited to be part of a counterrevolution in a digital age for parents and educationalists who recognize that an active childhood that includes engagement with nature in the fresh air is vital for healthy development and curious, independent minds. There are more and more forest schools across the country and even more schools and

nurseries that are integrating outdoor learning into their curriculum and seeing great results in terms of children’s engagement and achievements. This is supported by an increasing cohort of parents who seek out opportunities to inspire their children with wild time. ne way to get your toddlers outside is to join an outdoors toddler group.

These are groups where the activities are designed to get toddlers exploring and interested in nature. One week, you might be pond dipping and another week, you could be using objects from nature for a craft activity or making bird feeders. Have a look at Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s website for more information about their Nature Tots’ groups which are held at various locations in Staffordshire. Or visit Valley Tots at RSPB’s Coombes Valley which is held on the third Monday of each month. Their next session will be 21 March at 13.30 - 15.00 and costs £3.50 (£2.80 for members).

literacy reading with babies

E

xperts recommend that we read to babies from birth. In fact, some say that we should start reading to babies when they are still in the womb! But many parents feel a bit, well... silly. Babies don’t understand what we are reading to them. They’re usually more interested in eating the book than listening to us reading the story to them! Is reading a story to a baby more beneficial than just letting them listen to us chatting to a friend? Actually, yes! Reading to children from birth has many benefits. It will help children to increase their attention span and concentration. They are introduced to words, scenes and ideas that they are unfamiliar with which will help their imaginations to develop, aid their understanding of the wider world and give them a wider vocabulary as they learn to speak. The American Academy

14

of Paediatrics found that children in poverty hear a lot less words than their higher income peers which results in ‘significant learning disadvantages that persist into adulthood.’ In a world that is full of exciting technology and toys that light up, play music and move, it can be difficult to engage a little person in a book. Help your baby to enjoy a story by really exaggerating your tone and expression as you read: a sharp intake of breath to shock, for example. Use different voices for characters. Talk about the pictures and point out the different characters and colours and objects that you can see. Having a cuddle and sharing a story is a great way to bond with your baby. Don’t be disheartened if they don’t seem interested or their attention wanders. Try a different book or try reading at a different time of the day. Show that you are excited by the book and your little one is more likely to get excited too.

out and about Consall Nature Park

O

ne morning in January we got up and... it wasn’t raining! We could actually see some blue sky. So we got our wellies on and headed out for a brisk walk, some fresh air and a dose of vitamin D.

We always find that walking in the woods is a great way to connect with nature. And without the distractions of television, mobile phones or household chores, it’s a great way to connect with each other too. We headed to Consall Forge in the Churnet Valley as the nature reserve there is one of our favourite walks. There is a large car park, a visitors’ centre, picnic facilities, toilets and

a shop. The toilets also have baby changing facilities. However, I don’t think that the dog enjoys this walk as much as she must be kept on the lead due to nesting birds. The visitor centre has exhibitions that tell you the history of Consall Forge. There is also a table of interesting things that people have found whilst walking around the park. My daughter was most interested in a dead frog! The shop is small and sells snacks and leaflets and guides for other local walks and places of interest. There are four different trails through the park. We usually follow the red route which is three miles. This should take about an hour but it takes us about ninety minutes as Betty, our two year old, likes to explore. We sometimes do the green one too which is a short walk around the fishing pond and only takes about half an hour. The white walk is an hour and a half. We have never attempted the purple walk which should take about two hours. Apparently this one can be quite steep in places but has spectacular views and goes near to a pub by the canal. The way-markers were easy to find. They can be more difficult to see in the summer when they get hidden behind bushes but the paths are quite obvious. We’ve never got lost! The red walk is not too strenuous, although it can be quite steep in places. Of course, after all of the rain, it was very muddy. Suitable footwear is a must! There are plenty of benches along the walk in case you need a sit down – or a lie down!

Despite it being winter, we saw a wealth of wildlife. The park is situated near to extensive reserves owned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and we saw and heard lots of birds. There was also lots of interesting fungi and we saw lots of holes and burrows where we think there were probably creatures hibernating. The only thing that we didn’t enjoy about the walk was that there is a rifle range nearby. Unfortunately, they must have been having an event or competition so the constant sound of gunfire shattered the usual peaceful tranquillity that we experience when walking in the woods. In fact, my husband remarked at one point that he felt like we were in a war zone! But, we have never been bothered by the noise before and it certainly won’t stop us going again. As Betty’s legs are getting stronger, we may try the purple walk soon. Apparently, that pub is very nice...
