There’s A New “Don” in Town By Jessica Taylor

Don Julio’s Mexican Restaurant that is!

Owner Sam Rivera has jumped in full speed ahead opened the new Don Julio’s at 2900 E. Nasa Parkway, and he’s not looking back! The new Don Julio’s is just that – a NEW Don Julio’s. Sam has worked with his staff to make sure this restaurant is different from the original location in order to appeal to a different demographic. In order to make a smooth transition from being a family-oriented restaurant like the original location on FM 646 in Brittany Bay is, Sam pulled out all the stops - starting with the food. “My soux chef, Leonor Rodriguez, said she could improve the spice package we use, and she hasn’t disappointed.” Sam said. They have trimmed down their menu, but added a few new dishes like Ceviche and fish tacos, as well as innovative spins on traditional favorites such as fried avocados, black beans and white spanish rice. Sam also believes it is vital for the food served at Don Julio’s to be prepared fresh daily – so important that they purchase the snapper, crab and shrimp used in their dishes from a local seafood house on a daily basis. Even though Don Julio’s boasts the use of the freshest produce and meats available, they are still able to serve up quality meals for a reasonable price. In fact, nothing on the menu costs more than $15! Another element that sets the Don Julio's in Seabrook apart from other restaurants, including the original, is the progressive bar that brings in 40 percent of the revenue at the new location. A copper sheeting encases the bar, making

it more visually appealing to a younger clientele. The bar also carries 49 types of tequila, 35 types of wine that compliment the food served and various types of draft beer as well. One thing you won't find at any other local pub or restaurant is their dessert called DJ's Crazy Creme. This soft-serve vanilla ice cream contains 40% alcohol and is served with peaches and coconut. This tasty treat is for the big kids only, so don't forget your i.d. if you plan to order this one! To spice things up a bit, Sam also included a party room that can hold 70 people, as well as a 14-table open-air patio to increase the capacity of the restaurant, which is at 240 people currently. The restaurant also enjoys the use of six 50" televisions that feature an NFL game package. Live music has also been incorporated at the new location, and can be heard in the bar area from 8:30 p.m. to midnight on Thursday and Friday nights!

Mex with a twist, making it a little more special to Sam. "The overall goal is to offer people what they can’t get elsewhere," said Sam. With the innovative menu, upscale decor, commitment to customer service and, of course, great food, Don Julio’s Seabrook is an exciting treat to be experienced!

DESSERT ALERT!

Sam said the key to the success of the opening of the second Don Julio's has been good management. He credits his general manager, Rick Estrada and his soux chef, Leonor for all they have done in helping him transform Don Julio's from a traditional Tex-Mex restaurant into Tex-

GULF COAST FILM FESTIVAL

BRINGS HOLLYWOOD TO CLEAR LAKE Erin Gray to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award By Peggy “Domino” Taylor Lights! Camera! Action! – The Gulf Coast Film Festival (GFCC) is holding their annual event September 19, 20 and 21, 2008, in the NASA-Johnson Space Center community of Seabrook, Texas. “This is Our Hollywood” is the theme of this year’s out-of-this-world entertainment event. The GCFF is in its ninth year and has gained international recognition in the independent film community.

Other celebrities who will be presenting are Ernie Manouse from Channel 8 (PBS), Nellie Gonzales from Channel 11 (KHOU), Emmy Winner Robin Craig from Channel 26 (Fox), Houston Film Commissioner Rick Ferguson and area elected officials.

All film screenings will be held at San Jacinto College – Central Campus in their new state-of-the-art theater. There will be opportunities for festival attendees to meet and mingle with actors, producers and directors from the film and television industry. Director Hal Wixon founded the GCFF in 2000. An actor himself, Wixon’s mission was to encourage the work of independent filmmakers and promote the art of filmmaking. This became the mission of this non-profit festival, which puts budding filmmakers in the spotlight. “This festival was created to show-

Filmmakers from all over the world submit their films to the festival, which also showcases Bay Area-Houston as a location for future films. Numerous sponsors, including the City of Nassau Bay and the City of Seabrook, support the festival. Tickets are available for three-day passes, Saturday and Sunday passes and individual screenings. Discounted passes will be available to military personnel and students with ID. Individual screening tickets will be available at the door. Banquet tickets are not available at the door, so reserve your seat early. Weekend fun packages for all events Friday, Saturday and Sunday are also available.

Every year, the festival has celebrities in the film and video industries who are guest speakers and presenters. This year’s scheduled celebrity guest is film, television and stage actor Erin Gray, who will be receiving the lifetime achievement award. Erin is best known for her memorable roles in hit television series, Kate Summers, Silver Spoons, Colonel Wilma Deering and the ever-popular Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

This three-day, two-night event kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday evening, with a meet and greet mixer followed by a buffet at Villa Capri Restaurant on Clear Lake. On Saturday film screenings will start, and the day will end with the ninth Annual Cascade Awards Banquet at Bailey’s in Seabrook. The festival will conclude on Sunday with final screenings.

case the discovery of new and emerging artists,” said Wixon. “The goals for this fun and educational event are to encourage the works of independent filmmakers and promote the concept of film as art, offering awards as a means of educational outreach and expanding the awareness of independent film.”

WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY HAIR?! This time of year often encourages one to take a look in the mirror and mull over ones look. Is it time for an update? Is it time to add conditioner to that dull summer hair? What about a new hairstyle? We want something new, but we don’t always know what that should be. When I am out and about I am often confronted with the question, “What would you do with my hair?” First off, that can be a very difficult question to answer. Aside from the fact that people never want to hear what I would ACTUALLY do with their hair, it's too complicated to give a thorough consultation while I am on my third martini. While we stylists would love to just spout out, “Oh my gosh, totally chop it to your chin, and dye it a summer shade of amber, then flat iron it and run pomade through it!” It's just too much to ask for a five-minute chat. There is much to be said about a proper consultation, so make an appointment, and be prepared to have a more thorough session.

First, note what you love about your hair, as well as what is not working. A good stylist should ask you about your styling regimen so as not to give you a style that would be beyond your control. Ask yourself what you are willing to do: round brush, flat iron, or wash and go? Don’t be shy about bringing pictures. Stylists are visual people, and we love to not only have an illustration of where you would like to go but it helps us see the images that you see in your head. Asking your stylist to read your mind is like trying to will a dealer to deal you a 21! Prayer and good intentions don’t always cut it! Also, identify your comfort zone – everyone has one. It’s the one thing you are absolutely unwilling to do – like cutting your bangs an inch long, or dyeing your hair red. Be open with your stylist because they want to please you. And most importantly, don’t ever say, “Do whatever you want,” unless you really, really mean it.

AQUAGE Trend Collection:

During your consultation, be open to what your stylist has to say. A great stylist will give you a perfect marriage between “WHAT’S HOT” and your own personal face and style. So what IS new??? Kiss that high school super sweep across the forehead goodbye and chop those bangs! My “Big Bang Theory” right now is to have either blunt bangs just a tad above the lashes, or what I call “convertible bangs” which are fringe that can be worn down, split off center or even swept aside for some shorter hair kissing the forehead ala Reese Witherspoon. The Rihanna super crop is the hottest thing Going right now. It's longer fringe with shorter hair throughout the crown and nape. Lastly, the Posh is super hot because all face shapes can handle this classic shape. The bob is personalized to bone structure and hair texture. Anyone can wear trends as long as

makes playing a show in Houston a little more special, especially when the last words heard from his mouth on stage are, “Houston: You are the best. The absolute best!” So, you can call it what you want, but at the end of the day, it really is an amalgamation of everything Thornton has ever wanted to do musically – and he gets to share it with the world. How’s that for living your dreams?

OVR-DRV (Over Drive) is a five-member group that play classic to modern rock favorites. I caught them at Monkey Bar. Band members include Tom Smith, lead vocals and guitar; Robert Westerman (lead and rhythm), Laura Magers (lead vocals and keyboard), Bill Bowerman (drums) and Sagacious Sachem (bass). Visit them online at www.overdrive.net. - Andy Eng

Homegrown Talent: I visited with San Leon native Amanda Cevallos (www.myspace.com/ amandajocevallos) who has been away for several years developing her music production skills. She produced her debut album of original works and will be in the area in August and September before kicking off her tour. Amanda's story and outlook on the changes that come with time is one she's excited to share using her musical talents. Check her out when she swings through in the next couple of months. You'll be able to catch her at T-Bone Tom’s, Bojangles, Claudio’s Piano Bar and Clifton's By The Sea.

Returning well-rested after a week of honeymooning in Bermuda, Andy & the Dreamsicles picked right up where they left off: on the Kemah Boardwalk for a Fireworks Friday night. Jim Shortt has been a regular at many of Andy's Oleander parties and we hope to see Jim at a few more. - Andy Eng

Owners of

Railean Rum in High Spirits By Jessica Taylor

Texas is home to a lot of things: the Alamo in San Antonio, the Live Music capital of the world in Austin, Dell and Compaq computers, the Dallas Cowboys and Mavericks, the Houston Astros, Rockets, Comets, Texans, Dynamo and Aeros, Battleship Texas and Dr Pepper to name just a few. But now, one Texas couple wants to put Texas on the map for something else – the rum they hand-make in San Leon, Texas. The inspiration for this rum comes from the sailing hobby of owners Kelly and Matt. The couple loves to sail throughout the Gulf of Mexico and during one of their trips they began trying and collecting various types of rum from the different islands they visited. After seeing and tasting all of these international rums, the Raileans wondered why there weren’t any rums originating in Texas. They decided to solve that problem by making their own 100 percent hand-made Texas rum here in the Lone Star State. Kelly, who had previously spent more than 10 years in the wine business, combined her skills with that of her husband, who is a chemical engineer, when they were working on the recipe for their rum. “I would taste the rum and tell Matt what I liked and didn’t like about it, and he would make adjustments to the recipe,” Kelly said of the process they started in late 2005. After preparing their distillery and acquiring all the necessary permits, they were able to start manufacturing their unique rum in May of 2007. Kelly said that what makes Railean Rum unique is that it is double-distilled and double-filtered to create a smooth, crisp taste without the bitterness or bite you experience with other rums. The Raileans also use a pure, unsulfured Grade-A cane molasses from Louisiana and Florida that is of a much higher quality than the molasses that is used in other rums, as well as new, small, charred American oak barrels to age the rum, instead of older, used ones which can alter the taste. Railean Rum is also subject to higher levels of quality control because it is made in small batches, allowing the Raileans to keep a close watch over them and make sure to capture the “heart of the spirit.”

THE SCENE

Kelly believes that because of the way it is made, Railean Rum is very versatile and as a result, can be mixed into a variety of other drinks. This versatility has aided in increasing the popularity of Railean Rum in the short amount of time it has been in production. Railean Rum is available not just in this area, but Dallas, Ft. Worth and San Antonio as well. Houston area restaurants and bars such as Aurora Wine and Sports Bar, Top Water Grill, Millers ARC, Tommy’s Seafood & Steakhouse, South Shore Harbor Resort, Green Parrot Cafe and the Terrace Cafe are using Railean Rum in their drinks. The Raileans makes two types of rum. Railean’s White Rum is crisp, clean and refreshing – making it perfect for summertime drinks like daiquiris, mai tais, pina coladas, mojitos and rum punch. Their dark rum, the Railean Reserve XO, is smooth, yet flavorful and reveals enticing aromas of chocolate, spice and oak – perfect for that premium Cuba Libre. San Leon, where the Railean Rum distillery is located, was once a stronghold for the swashbuckling pirate, Jean Lafitte, and is now a community of fishermen, sailors and wild parrots. The drink of choice for these selfproclaimed “modernday pirates” is, of course, rum, and they helped inspire the green parrot logo of the Railean Rum brand. Not only do they manufacture it, but they also label and bottle it themselves as well, allowing the couple to be involved in every step of the process. Kelly said the rum-making is and has been a wonderful experience not only because she and Matt have been able to see their work come to fruition, but also because “It’s something they’ve been able to do together.” For more information about the Raileans and their rum or to schedule a private tour of the distillery, call 713-882-3091. She Craves (Continued): The sound of She Craves is a difficult one to describe, but not difficult at all to understand once you've heard them. Anthemic choruses and smartly crafted hooks are hallmarks of the band's sound, as are live shows that teeter on the edge of control as the band churns through their set with unrelenting energy and force. She Craves is fronted by Christine Ely who exudes a rarely seen blend of intensity, charm and sincerity. Part pit bull, part Jimmy Page, guitarist Matt Cole crafts the most melodic and tasteful parts imaginable, drenches them with attitude and cranks them to ten. Drummer Ben Mills hits with the sonic force of a wrecking ball all while bassist, Roger Wuthrich, adds the low end and melodies that keep you moving. Rock and roll is new again. Rock and roll is exciting again. Rock and roll is dangerous again. She Craves (www.myspace.com/shecraves) is rock and roll.

Bodacious Tatas at the Cock-Eyed Seagull. Wow... One can't say enough after one of these evenings. Everybody dance. There is playing up in the loft. Check out the stellar combination of great music and venue yourself if ever these these two forces align again down the road. Simply good mojo and good music. - Andy Eng

ALL STARS HAS IT ALL! All Stars Sports Bar & Grill, located at 1055 Bay Area Blvd., has been undergoing some major renovations and changes since its recent purchase by brothers Curtis and Chris McWilliams. With a history of success in the the bar biz this “dynamic duo” have converted All Stars to a happening hot spot in only a few short months. Since opening “Fast Times” in 1984, their goal with each nightclub has been to have “THE place to be.” Between the two, they have operated renowned clubs throughout Houston such as “Shark Dance,” “NETWERK,” “Hurricane Hut,” “Surf Shack,” and more recently, the newest “Bikini Beach” location in Galveston. “We purchased All Stars because it’s time to give Clear Lake what it needs,” Chris said. “Not just another sports bar, but a place to call your own.” Located on Bay Area Blvd. between El Camino Real and Saturn Curtis said, “You can’t beat the venue. We are the only place around that offers absolutely everything. Inside, we have over 12,000 square feet. We also have a huge outdoor covered patio and bar, two inside bars, indoor and outdoor stages for live music, games, and TVs showing everything from music videos to all the best sporting events.” In addition, All Stars management is especially proud of its menu, offering great appetizers and dinner items. Some locals may remember the All

Stars building as originally being the largest bank in Clear Lake. It is quite unique as it is the only building in the area with a basement – 8,000 square feet to be exact, and it still houses a large walk-in vault. “People often ask us if we are going to utilize the basement,” Curtis said, “and our answer is always yes. But our focus right now is on continuing to take this place to the next level.“ When asked what they attribute their consistent success in the club business to, Chris replied, “That’s easy. We make it a point to listen. We talk to our customers and find out what it is they want, and then work to achieve it.” Each Friday, All Stars serves what they refer to as an “elaborate buffet” for the Happy Hour crowd until 7 p.m. and offers generous drink specials to an average crowd of about 200 revelers or more. Patrons are invited to stop by the guest table and register to win a Friday Happy Hour Party. Each week’s party host bringing the most guests to their party wins $50 cash. The winning hosts for each week then all compete later in the big “Host with the Most” contest to win a Caribbean trip. All Stars’ first grand prize winner was Libby Moreno of NASA (pictured). To book a Happy Hour Party, call All Stars at 281-461-1400. Other weekly special events include the newly established Wednesday Night Pillow Fights and Free Steak Night Thursdays. In the last three months, they have aimed to make All Stars the “world series” of benefits, most recently hosting a large benefit for Equusearch. Thus far, more than $22,000 has been raised to help with medical expenses for various local cancer patients, and more benefits are on the horizon. “I am proud that All Stars has been able to contribute to the community like this,” said Marketing and Special Events Coordinator Melissa McWilliams. “We are working now on establishing a charitable foundation hosted by All Stars that will be a non-profit corporation, allowing us to raise more money for important causes such as these.” - Continued on Page 36

Thornton wasn’t the only Billy rocking that night at Scout as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top took to the stage to jam with The Boxmasters.

Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters hit Clear Lake with Scout Bar performance At a recent Tuesday night performance at Scout Bar I counted more cowboy hats in the crowd than mohawks for the first time in memory. But that’s not to say young and attractive hipsters didn’t show up either. Maybe it was the fact that they have Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton as a frontman, or maybe it was their electrifying, retro-modern style of “rock-a-billy” music that brought in the diverse crowds, but one thing is for sure – the packed house liked what The Boxmasters were giving them. The unique crowds that can be seen during The Boxmasters’ summer tour are likely drawn in Publisher’s Note: Jim Shortt was unable to write Shortt Notes this due to the diversity in month and his friends here at the SCENE are keeping him and his their music. of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones with the likes of Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard – which is probably why the second disc of their album and some of their stage show features classic songs covered with flair only The Boxmasters can provide. Even though he has garnered the majority of his popularity from writing Sling Blade and the acting career that followed, Thornton’s first love was – and still is – music. After releasing four solo albums in the past seven years, he seems to have finally struck a chord with the Boxmasters, who released their self-titled two-CD album on June 10. Not only are The Boxmasters getting recognition from fans in venues across the country, but the video for their song “Poor House” has been featured on GAC-TV and CMT.com as well. But more importantly than the acclaim they are receiving from the industry, they seem to be having fun, too. One could argue that the best part about seeing a band live is being able to see how much the performers enjoy their craft – the Boxmasters are no exception. Not only did they seem to have a fantastic time rockin’ out on the Scout Bar stage, but Billy Bob and the boys got a burst of energy and excitement when they were joined by native Houstonian and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. - Continued on Page 36
