PUB & CLUB UPDATE
Come see what's new at the Seagull By BETSEY ENNIS There's no doubt that the Cock-Eyed Seagull, located at 1010B East NASA Parkway (at Egret Bay), has become a staple in our area's live music and nightlife SCENE. There's absolutely no entertainment venue with muraled walls as recognizable as this place. Reminiscent of an undersea adventure, complete with life size sharks hanging from the ceiling, this watering hole is a wellknown hangout for musicians, service industry locals and music lovers alike. The staff is fun-loving and down-to-Earth. Witty bartender and newly appointed Bar Manager Brandy Buckout has, no-doubt, never met a stranger. "Our customers will be excited to know about all of our improvements: We have new faces behind the bar and out on the floor, and on the stage, plus new drink specials and our kitchen is up and running again," Buckout said.
offer awesome cheese sticks; Friday night, we have yummy rib specials; and Saturday night is chef's special plate,” Buckout said. “You have to try Eric’s boudain. Come by and check it out.” Kitchen hours are from 3 to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The Cock-Eyed’s tropical, palapa-thatched stage hosts live music five nights a week including karaoke on Wednesday and Sunday, Open Mic Jam on Thursday and scheduled bands on Friday and Saturday. October bands include Bodacious TaTas, Captain Rick, Abrahams Tree, Cruise Control, Convertibles and Magazine. Groove Kings, Sharks and Los Gallos are slated for early November performances.

On Friday, October 31, dust off your best wig, squeeze into those tights and turn into your favorite alter ego and head over to the Cock-Eyed for their Halloween party. “Enjoy our spooktacular drink specials,” Buckout said. “The names are a surprise and Halloween-themed. Music will be provided by the Convertibles. Meet the Miller Lite Girls and compete in the costume contest ($100 cash for first place; $50 & $25 bar tab second and third place, respectively). On a somber note, Sunday, Oct.19, the Cock-Eyed Seagull is hosting a benefit and memorial for former employee Sunshine Silver which will start at 2 p.m. There will be various live bands performing, plus a live auction and Cliff’s Karaoke at 8 p.m. No matter what the occasion, toast your friends at the improved Cock-Eyed Seagull and be sure to tell them The SCENE sent you!

The Sharks with Bennie Brasket at T-Bone Tom's “Can't say enough about this gig. We all know how Sunday nights at T-Bone's is often a packed house for an evening of dining and dancing. Band leader Rod Rodriguez was is the audience, soaking in some good sun, and looking great these days while he's on his way back. Filling in for Rod this evening is Bacliff's own Bennie Brasket. Bennie's a poorly kept secret hanging out mostly at Katie's with bassmeister Chris Ray and qualifys in our book as not just a Texas Blues guitarist but a Gulf Coast Blues performer, if you understand the distinction. When you hear Bennie play what he hears and feels, and it's different each time, you know what we mean. Backing up Bennie was veteran Seabrook bassist, Ricky Pitts, who also plays by ear and feel along with martial arts master Jody Smith on the kit. And thus, you have a band that doesn't just play music but make music (with a bite to boot)!

Music News National Act BROTHER to hit Clear Lake: ”Chances are you've seen BROTHER on NBC's 'ER', maybe heard their music on the classic 'Baraka' soundtrack. The band has shared stages with Joe Walsh, John Entwhistle, Linkin Park, and Alicia Keys and are the only independent band to have played the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fusing signature vocals and guitar with the deep pulse of the didgeridoo, the soaring highs of the bagpipes and tribal percussion, BROTHER is wholly original. The band's powerhouse live performances are an energetic celebration, captivating and engaging the audience from the first song to the last. We're excited to welcome BROTHER back to Houston, Texas, for their first time appearance at the 11th Annual Clear Lake Celtic Music Festival.” - Dennis McClain, Clear Lake Celtic Festival SPACE ROCKERS Houston debut rescheduled: The SPACE ROCKERS, who were scheduled for their Houston debut at SCOUT BAR on Sept. 12, had to reschedule thanks to Hurricane Ike. No fear, though; they have been rescheduled for shows at Scout on November 28 (Friday after Thanksgiving) and also in December. See Scout Bar’s ad inside the back cover for more details on upcoming shows.
Benefit News Update: As we go to press a number of benefits following Hurricane Ike are being planned and discussed. One in particular involves the Bay Area Musicians Artists (BAMA). A talented group of volunteers speerheaded by local musician Lynn Raggio are planning an event or series of events aimed at raising money to help a number of area musicians hit hard by the storm. The SCENE has already pledged support and will assist getting the
word out as soon as some dates are set. If interested in helping out, contact Lynn at onleadguitar@sbcglobal.net. Another good idea is to join The SCENE’s Webmail list by e-mailing me at john@thescenemagazine.com. We will be sending out webmails as we learn of any events helping our neighbors who were hit the hardest. Stay tuned for details.

Clear Lake’s bestkept secret for all of your costume and party planning needs is Herbert’s Fun Shop, located just off Hwy. 146 at 2114 Seabrook Circle (behind the Waffle House). Herbert’s Fun Shop has been serving the Bay Area for over 30 years and has been in its current location for the past three years. “We needed more space to showcase our large collection,” owner Gary Douglas said. With more than 5,000 items in stock including costumes, wigs, hats, make-up and decorations, this store can set you up with almost anything you need for any season. Whether you have a large or small family or you are looking for the best costume for you, Herbert’s Fun Shop should be on the top of your list for places to go this Halloween season. They have everything from pretty pirate costumes, to goofy and ridiculous. The Fun Shop also keeps most of their products in stock year ’round. At the Fun Shop, they carry toddlerthrough adult-size costumes and accessories at very low prices. “We are able to keep our prices so low because we are a major mail-order supplier across the United States and can pass the savings on to our local customers. We may be a small local shop, but we do a major International business,” Gary explained. Costumes can range from sale items at $5 to more elaborate, specialty costumes that can be over $200. The average price for a costume is about $30. Wigs range from $14 to $24, masks from $4 to $24, and hats from $7.95 to $14.95. Herbert’s Fun Shop has provided costumes and props for the television show C.S.I. and
movies including She’s the Man, Accepted, and My Name is Earl. Besides Halloween, Mardi Gras is a big season for Herbert’s Fun Shop also. “We import most of our Mardi Gras products direct which makes us the preferred Supplier for most of the local Float Krewes. We are already stocked with more Mardi Gras items than ever before,” Gary said. The Fun Shop is loaded with hundreds of beads, costumes and float decorations for any Mardi Gras party. In October, Herbert’s Fun Shop will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 12:005:00 p.m. For more information, call Herbert’s Fun Shop at 281-291-0707 or visit them online at www.funshop.com. So if you plan to win best costume this Halloween, be sure to stop by Herbert’s Fun Shop, the best kept secret in town and see if our prices don’t beat all those temporary stores.

HOW TO SURVIVE A HURRICANE IN STYLE • FROM PAGE 26 Next, load your IPOD with all songs named Hurricane. My favorites are among the following: Ani Difranco, 4 Strings (Heart of Pain Hurricane Mix), Golden Smog, The Click, Angie Matson, Bush, Athlete, Jazmine Sullivan and Natalie Imbruglia. I can’t bear to hear The Scorpions one more time, but if you must, download it…. Then sit down for a beautiful candlelight dinner with all the windows open. These are my top picks for a five course hurricane dinner: (1)Trail Mix (2) Squeeze cheese and crackers (3) Spaghetti (4) Canned Fruit (5) Hurricane Cookies for dessert. (See recipe below.) Don’t forget peanut butter and tuna go great on anything. Save all of your little restaurant packages and sauces (tartar, ketchup, etc.) you can add them on to anything for a little flavor! Nothing says “hurrication” like an amazing after-dinner spa massage by candlelight. Just lie there in the dark and pretend you are in a thatched roof hut in Tahiti. Then lastly, let's not forget the world-famous – and absolutely necessary – EMERGENCY liquid
Hurricane. Be sure to keep a bottle of rum and Pat O’Briens Hurricane Mix handy at all times. And, as always in times like these, SHARE! Get out and meet your neighbors. Send your love and concern in the form of a pitcher of hurricanes and a batch of no-bake cookies. End your night by pretending the sound of generators humming is just the whir of a cruise ship engine, and remind yourself: It will all get better in time!
Drop by spoonfuls onto a flat surface such as pan lids. Let sit for about 10 minutes to set. In hot weather, they might not set as well.

Weekends on the Water A Special Guide To the CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA & GALVESTON ISLAND Post-Hurricane Ike Update: Obviously, our area took a hit. Popular restaurants and clubs were destroyed. The Kemah Boardwalk suffered severe damage, the area’s boating community was thinned out significantly and – more importantly – many of our friends and neighbors lost their homes and more. Six years ago, we launched the Weekends on the Water section to highlight the
water recreation districts along Clear Lake, Galveston Bay and on Galveston Island. Unfortunately many of the attractions and destinations we have promoted over the years were damaged or destroyed. Some of our favorite waterfront restaurants and clubs were wiped out, attractions flooded and annual events cancelled or rescheduled. But I’m happy to report that the rebuild-
ing started immediately and this area will bounce back bigger and stronger than ever. To do our part, I’m happy to announce the launching of a new campaign and website, www.weekendsonthewater.com, dedicated to promoting and supporting those same water recreation districts and tourist attractions that suffered the most from Hurricane Ike. Stay tuned for details. - John Ennis, SCENE Publisher

HOW TO SURVIVE A HURRICANE – IN STYLE!
Style
SCEN
BY HEAVEN PADGETT
As I ponder this month's fashion and style article, I find myself questioning the importance of fashion in the face of disaster. Does it matter if I have my Jimmy Choos or my Prada bag right now? Would I care if it floated away? These “things” don’t really define us, of course, but I have discovered some things over the course of a few weeks. For one, I thought the salon would take a hit because of the frivolous nature of beauty right now, but as it turns out, we were busier than ever. We had clients come in who had lost everything, but yet couldn’t wait to get their roots done and a warm shampoo. People who suffered little damage just couldn’t wait to get back to normal. And even as I was sailing on the Carnvial Conquest during the hurricane, I still remember thinking, “Well, if my house floats away at least I have all my cute clothes with me!”
HEAVEN PADGETT

Fashion is still most definitely a part of our culture regardless of our situations. Life still imitates art and art still imitates life. Even natural disasters seep into the consciousness of young artists and designers, which in turn, manifests itself if many ways. Disaster infiltrates our culture, and we start to see collections influenced by the minds of the affected. The Spring 2009 Collection by Lorick is a perfect example. This young designer from Florida has allowed natural disaster to shape her collection. This amazing collection called “After the Storm” is both eerie and fashion forward. Check it out on Fashionologie.com (search: Lorick). It's breathtaking. Dresses the hues of dying trees, sand and upturned earth tones, mud-dipped skirts and patterns with the appearance of falling leaves define the upcoming trends.
JASON MOSHER Artistic Director
But for now, while we are still all “weathering the storm,” I thought I would share some fun Hurricane Happiness tips from the one who can search out the fashion and fun in any situation. Hurricane Fashion Tips: • Use lots of gel! It can take the place of a blow dryer and get rid of frizzies.
AQUAGE Trend Collection:
• If you hate cold showers just wash your hair in the sink. Allow to air dry then pull into a bun.
Bridal Faux Hawk
• Keep your face cleansed well, and use a tinted moisturizer, so at least, you won’t look as miserable as you are.
Designed By Heaven Padgett
• Keep your hands sanitized, but use lots of lotion. Dust is really bad after a storm. • Comb your hair into a pretty side part and then into a ponytail for a little more kempt appearance. Having no electricity is no excuse for looking like the Swamp Thing. • Pull out all your slip on dresses for nice, non-clingy outfits for dining out in humidity –even if it's just the backyard! • Keep lip balm or lip gloss handy. It has magical power that gives you strength to face anything!

Farewell to a Community Friend As we were finalizing the last pages for this very issue we got the news: SCENE music columnist Jim Shortt passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, Sept. 7. “The last ninety days have been very difficult,” Jim’s wife explained. After his heart surgery in July, he was on a ventilator, and we were not able to communicate the entire time.“ Aside from having a deep passionate love and genuine appreciation for live music, Jim did more than most to help out his fellow neighbor, in particu-
lar the musical community. He led the charge to many fundraisers helping those who needed funds for funerals or medical bills. I can’t begin to imagine the reach of his thoughtfulness and kindness to those in need, not to mention his loyal readership following. I know he touched many, many lives both in person, behind the scenes and on print pages... He will be missed. In lieu of flowers, his family requested donations to a favorite cause: Ike survivors, St. Jude's, American Heart Association, American Lung Association. His wife said, “The best way to honor Jim is to do something for others.” – Betsey Ennis

SCENE RESTAURANT UPDATE
Don Pico’s: Celebrating 13 Years By Betsey Ennis Serving generous portions of Mexican food to the Clear Lake area for 13 years, Don Pico’s owner, Javier Enriquez prides himself in providing quality service, flavorful food and reasonable prices to his customers. The literal translation of “Don Pico’s” from Spanish is “Mr. Beak,” the owners chose to go with a tropical parrot theme which has been fully embraced. Located at 2110 Bay Area Blvd. (Behind Ashley’s Donuts) in Clear Lake City Don Pico’s welcomes guests with a festive decor of pink and blue walls and probably the most massive collection of parrots hanging from the ceiling. “At Don Pico's we use only the freshest ingredients,” Enriquez said. Having been in the restaurant business for more than 25 years, he says he know how to keep his customers coming back for more. “In 13 years, we have not raised prices for our fajita specials and our $1.99 Margaritas have also remained the same,” Enriquez explained. “We have a commitment to quality service and providing the best value for our food.” As the holiday season approaches, Don Pico’s is prepared to help you host your next event or holiday gathering. Don Pico's can accommodate parties of up to 150 in the Bay Area location or up to 200 in their other location in Pearland. Catering starts at a minimum of 30 people plus a delivery charge. Menu items include grilled fajitas and hand-rolled enchiladas, to fresh guacamole, chips and salsa. “Everything we serve is bold and flavorful,” Enriquez said. Call for more details: 281-280-0357. Whether you decide to dine in, cater out or throw a party, be sure to stop by either location and tell them The SCENE sent you!

The Scene’s Great Chefs An On-Going Series CHEF JOSE R. FIGUEROA BAKKHUS TAVERNA GREEK RESTAURANT & BAR 605 6th Street in Kemah • 281-538-1800 What’s your Background/ Experience: I’ve been in the restaurant/food service industry all my life. My father was an instructor at the Culinary Institute of America for several years. I started my career in the Army as a Food Service Specialist (cook); I spent 81/2 years states side and overseas in Korea, Germany, Panama, and Saudi Arabia. I left the military and worked in the hotel industry as a pantry chef and worked my way up to Executive Sous Chef and Executive Chef. I left that industry to pursue opportunities in the corporate restaurant industry (Don Pablo’s, Applebee’s, TGI Fridays, ect.) as a Kitchen Manager. I also held a position as General Manager for the Mexican Post chain in Philadelphia. I relocated to Texas in 2006 and held the Executive Chef position at Phil’s Place shrimp and oyster bar in South Shore Harbor and Kitchen Manager position at Boondoggles Pub in El Lago. Specialty: My favorite style of cooking is Eurasian Cuisine. It’s a fusion of classic French techniques and Asian style of cook-
ing. Similar to the style of “Simply Ming” from the Food Network. Signature Dish: We have a Red Snapper perfectly seasoned and pan seared; topped with sauteed Roma tomatoes, Bermuda onions, fresh garlic, oregano, and white wine. Finally the snapper is drizzled with a cilantro Aioli and served over spinach orzo pasta. We also have Beef or Chicken Souvlaki, it’s like your regular kabob you cook up on the grill only with a Greek twist. This kabob is marinated beef or chicken skewered with tomatoes, onions, and both red and green peppers served with lemon potatoes or herb rice. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous?: Every guest that comes into the restaurant is famous in some way. Every meal that my staff prepares is special in every way. I’ve cooked fore Mayor Ed Rendell of Philadelphia (now the Governor), Melissa Etheridge, Pattie La Belle, Bernard Hopkins (champion boxer) and a few others.
Please share one special cooking tip or technique for our readers: Thickening sauces, soups, or gravies: First you need to know what types of roux you’re going to use. Whether it’s flour and oil or clarified butter and flour or If it’s a light, brown, or dark roux. One trick is when the roux is ready and your stock is hot, remove the roux pot from the heat and add half the stock to the roux. Stir the sauce or soup and place the pot over the heat to bring it back up to temperature. While the sauce thickens you can adjust to any consistency you want. This keeps the sauce or soup from having roux balls (lumps).
