COVER STORY

Reel in a Great New Year at Masa Sushi By Betsey Ennis Fishing for a delicious way to send off 2008? On New Year's Eve, Masa Sushi Fusion Restaurant, located at 977 NASA Road 1, will be drawing names once every hour for a $100 gift certificate from 4 p.m. to close. Japanese-trained owner and head sushi chef Michael Zhou swears by his food. "We have fresh fish flown in daily from California," he detailed. "The Blue Fin Tuna is flown in from my cousin's company in Hawaii." Masa Sushi offers a vast array of Japanese dishes. Whether one is in the mood for Sushi, Hibachi, Tempura, California Rolls, Udon (soup) or Sashimi, Masa delivers flavors that appease any palate. For those searching for traditional Japanese dishes, their menu offers Masa Hot Rock Beef, Masa Seafood Konro, Shabu Shabu and Yaose Nabe – all of which embrace the allure of table cooking. "These dishes are great winter dishes, especially Masa Hot Rock," said Michael. Shabu Shabu – one of the menu's newest additions – is a traditional Japanese hot pot. It's brought to your table in

a hot bowl (or pot) and you cook it over a small fire in the specified sauce. This particular beef dish serves two. Yaose Nabe is the same concept as Shabu Shabu but with seafood. Other options include Amabei, Oyster, Snapper, Squid and Kani. The menu also boasts several new appetizer dishes and unique rolls. Another new menu item is the Tuna Burger. These two petite Seared Tuna are served on a crispy rice bun and served with green ketchup and Japanese pickles. Masa Sushi offers an impressive and reasonably priced lunch selection seven days a week. The Daily Special is always a winner with the chef's choice of various sushi and roll offerings. As the holiday season kicks into high gear, Michael wants to remind clients about giving gift certificates or using their services for catering. They can cater off site for 100 guests. Onsite they have room for 30 on the patio or 120 if a group rents out the entire restaurant. The patio is equipped with special lighting and a heater for those chilly nights. The main dining room is set up

Masa Sushi Sake Bar, located at 1804 W FM 646, Suite R, in Dickinson is a trendier concept than the original location. This Japanese restaurant has a 110-person capacity. The lower level (main dinning room) is divided into two areas for either big parties or smaller parties if clients prefer more privacy. Second floor lounge is complete with sofas and coffee tables for a more intimate and laid-back experience. This restaurant offers a more extensive menu

with bar seats, cozy booths and long tables throughout. "We are known for our warm atmosphere, trendy and spacious decor, delicious food and outstanding service," Michael said. "Customers have come to anticipate our yearly anniversary celebration when we offer 50 percent off all food and drinks every October 18. We always have a packed house." Sake lovers: Pay attention! Ty-Ku Sake (imported from Japan) is available for a limited time during the winter months. Masa Sushi is selling Ty-Ku gift sets complete with sake bomb instructions. Purchase as a gift or to imbibe on the spot. To find out more about Masa Sushi or to schedule a catered party, please call 281-4869888; and be sure to tell them The SCENE sent you.

than the first with unique dishes not available at the fusion restaurant. Must-have dishes include the Masa Tower, the International Sashimi and – of course – the Yummy Must Try. Another difference worth mentioning is the full bar. Try one of their many Sake temptations – their flavored Sake Martinis are especially tasty. New Year's Eve Masa Sushi Sake Bar (like Masa Fusion) will hold drawings each hour from 4pm to close for $100 gift certificates.

The Scene’s Great Chefs An On-Going Series CHEF DANIEL GREEN THREE OAKS - FINE WINES & EXQUISITE FOODS 601 East Main (Historic League City) • 281-557-8466 What’s your Background/Experience: My family, since immigrating to this country several generations ago, has been restaurateurs, so the business is truly in my blood. I grew up watching my father cook, trying to absorb as much as I could. While he was not a professional cook himself, he provided me a base knowledge of quality ingredients and how to prepare them. As I grew up I traveled across the country several times and to several countries in Europe and Australia, spending months at a time, traveling, learning and most of all, eating. After considering several careers I looked at what I really had a passion for and what made me the happiest, and cooking had always made me happy, so naturally I looked into culinary school and decided that it was where I was supposed to be. While attending The Art Institute of Houston I worked in several kitchens, honing my skills and talents. Since graduating I have continued to follow my passion and working with my good friend John, here at Three Oak, I get the opportunity to work with the best ingre-

dients in a perfect setting for the kind of food that I love to make. Your Specialty: I am particularly fond of Rustic Northern Italian food. I strongly believe that true, authentic Italian food is about the utilization of simple ingredients at the peak of their freshness, presented in a way that encourages the actual flavors of each ingredient to be present in every bite. Italian cuisine, in my opinion, is not about covering up the dish with a lot of sauce(s) or cheese. A little bit of olive oil and fresh herbs are often the bases for the best sauces. Signature Dishes: Fresh green and white striped ravioli filled with spinach, ricotta and a duck egg, in a sage and brown butter sauce. The beauty of this dish is its simplicity, very few ingredients that all play a role in the final dish. The ricotta, spinach and egg all combine with the browned butter to make a delightfully light and subtle sauce for the fresh pasta.

Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? No one as of yet, however the sailor in the classic photo taken in Time Square after WWII will be visiting us in the very near future and it will be an honor to cook for him. Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: Never be afraid to try something new. Go to the grocery store and buy things that you have never used before and try them out. The greatest dishes are results of experimentation and having fun with new things. Granted, they don’t always work out, but Thomas Edison didn’t invent the light bulb on the first try!

T-Bone Tom’s: Survivor from the Storm By Kelly Byerley Among the devastation Hurricane Ike left scattered throughout our neighborhoods, there is evidence that, slowly but surely, Clear Lake is on the road to recovery. Although it may take years to reach the end of that road, certain milestones along the way are proving that our community will bounce back better than ever. KEMAH UPDATE

Kemah Boardwalk is bouncing back from Ike All but two Boardwalk restaurants now open The SCENE is happy to report that much of Kemah, including the Kemah Boardwalk, is bouncing back from the pounding suffered from Hurricane Ike. Just prior to the Thanksgiving weekend Landry’s Restaurants opened the Aquarium and Red Sushi restaurants joining Chart House, Babin’s Seafood House, Saltgrass Steak House, Cadillac Bar and the original Joe’s Crab Shack as boardwalk restaurants open for business. Only the Flying Dutchman and Landry’s Seafood House are yet to open as of press time. Many attractions and games including the Boardwalk Bullet Rollercoaster and C. P. Huntington Train are also operational and The Boardwalk Inn is accepting guests. Palapa’s, Monkey Bar, Molly’s Pub, Burger House and Bakkhus Taverna re-opened soon after the storm in either late September or early October.

T-BONE TOM’S IS BACK • Cont. From Page 18 Perhaps the biggest “silver-lining” to the storm was the impact that it had on the kitchen. Although it did not receive as much flooding as the dining room, the storm damage did create the opportunity to revamp the cooking area. New coolers and additional prep space enabled T-Bone Tom’s to have a more efficient, organized kitchen, while also making room for a new counter dining area where customers can watch as cooks grind meat and press hamburgers.

The reopenings of The Terrace and D-Vine Wine were delayed because of issues with electricity at Toucan Alley. They both opened in midOctober.

Red Sushi is now open at the Kemah Boardwalk

T-bone Tom’s re-opened just before Thanksgiving and The SCENE has learned that Zone 504 Sports Bar may also return. The Kemah Historical Society Landmark that housed the popular sports bar suffered severe damage from the storm surge and it was thought it would need to be torn down. But it appears that may not be the case and the owners are working on a plan to repair the building and possibly have it open before the end of the first quarter of 2009.

LET US CAT YOUR PARTER Y!

It has taken T-Bone Tom’s over two months to recover from its brush with Ike. The “Now Open” sign outside that finally went up proves, that with hard work and determination, our community, much like this Kemah landmark, will weather the storm. When it does, it will be better than ever.

AN AFTERNOON WITH ACTRESS ERIN GRAY E

the 25th Century; did you have a favorite of these memorable characters?

SC

EN

By Peggy “Domino” Taylor The Gulf Coast Film Festival was fortunate to be rescheduled after hurricane Ike with all participants making new schedules and anticipating the event November 15 & 16, including special guest and Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient, Erin Gray. The Friday night Welcome Reception at Villa Capri was a night of first time introductions of celebrity guests, television hosts, many filmmakers, elected officials and Texas actors. The evening was definitely “This is Our Hollywood” as the out of state guests wanted to learn more about and hear first hand stories of the hurricane. We all know and lived the stories, but so many of the L.A/ group wanted to hear our stories, when we were there to hear about their lives and work. As the guest mingled around the lake, they saw destruction and at the same time rebuilding and a beautiful rebirth of spirit. As the fun filled evening was coming to a close, we said our good byes until tomorrow at the press conference at the Hilton and talked about arrival times for the big wrap up

event, the 9th Annual Cascade Awards Banquet at Bailey’s Event Room. During the filming of the press conference, I was asked to conduct the conference, with film and television journalists as well as students covering the event for University of Houston and San Jacinto College. The students were eager and came fully prepared, loaded with questions for Erin Gray, about her life personally and professionally and her next projects. Erin was casual, poised and ready to entertain. After the conference I had lunch with Erin and film festival director, Hal Wixon, and this is when I had my time to get to know personally this multitalented and ageless woman. Below are excerpts from our conversation. Taylor: The public knows of your fame that became a household word from the characters Kate in Silver Spoons and Colonel Wilma Deering in Buck Rogers in

Gray: I loved both of these characters, but little did I realize going in to the Buck Rogers series, that I would be a role model for women and men. I had no idea, but through the years I have met so many young people that said they were inspired by my character to pursue their dream and a career in aviation and space. My dream role became inspiration for more than I ever would imagine and that is rewarding. Taylor: Sitting here in the NASA community, you know where most of our interests lie and doing the pre-publicity on this event, the biggest comments were about the picture of you as Colonel Wilma in the space suit. Of all the photos from your modeling days to film, that was the picture everyone wanted! Gray: (Laughing) You know, after being a model since teenage years, and the original “I’m Worth It” woman for L’Oreal and promoting beauty products for years, the space costume is the one that young boys and men would tell me that is when they knew they were straight!! Taylor: How did you transform from television to live theatre?

Continued From Page 24 Gray: Doing Silver Spoons, I was triplechallenged with the sitcom, comedy, television and live audiences, then I honed in my skills in California Suite and Six Room River Views, Social Security and La Moure N.D 58458. Taylor: The La Moure was an award winning play in 1997; is that when you got the call for the Movies of the Week? Gray: Yes, I worked with Jason Robards in Breaking Home Ties and then on to Avenging Ace and Addicted to This Love. Taylor: Talk about a range, do you enjoy the “evil” roles as much as your others? Gray: I enjoy the variety from playing a psychotic killer to an evil duchess. In Jason Goes to Hell, that was an intense role and I had the same intensity in the Menendez Trial film, Honor thy Father and Mother. (Ms. Gray played the role of the prosecutor in that controversial film.) Taylor: Can you tell me of all you have worked with, who has been your favorite director and actor? Gray: I would have to say, director John Wilder and for actor, Robert Ulrich, he was such a big ol’ teddy bear! Taylor: I know you completed filming 15 independent feature films, and have current projects on board now, many women want to know your secret on how you juggle career, husband and children? Gray: I have a wonderful husband, Richard Hissong, who is a Director of Photography and we raised two beautiful children. My husband is currently producing a

series of videos on my favorite subject, Chi Kung and Tai Chi. I learned how to handle stress and extreme schedules with Tai Chi. I modeled and danced for decades, but nothing has ever been so rewarding as Tai Chi, I haven’t been sick in over 15 years, because of my practice of Tai Chi. I love to talk about it. I learned about acupuncture from James Garner, doing Rockford Files. He was seeing an acupuncturist for all his stunt work and it would heal his back and would help with any other pain or problems. I started going and loved it, but I when wasn’t available to have my acupuncture my mentor said I could receive the same benefits from Tai Chi. I learned and still study and teach. I have had students for 6 years that I teach while I still study and the experience keeps me going and in healthy shape. I want everyone to know about the benefits of Tai Chi and how it can change your outlook and health. Taylor: For someone to never get sick or run down, this amazes me, where do you study and teach? Gray: In L.A., I teach 3 days a week Tai Chi and Tai Chi Knife at the Encino Acupuncture Clinic. I also teach Chi Kung exercises. To further this passion I have on this subject, I am a contributing columnist for a new online magazine VIVmg where I write stories sharing the Taoist philosophy. Do you remember when Nixon went to China in the 70’s and all the worldwide publicity was buzzing about his press secretary who came down with appendicitis, and the emergency surgery was performed without any anesthesia? Well, that is what they used, the teachings of Tai Chi. Isn’t that amazing? - Continued on Page 33

CUTTING EDGE FASHION If you haven’t been hanging out in a cave, then surely you haven seen an Ed Hardy T-Shirt or two draped around a friend or acquaintance! I am often asked- Who is Ed Hardy? Well, the actual man Don Ed Hardy is the Godfather of Tattooing. Born in 1945 in Southern California he has tattooed most of his life. He and his wife Franscesca lived in Japan while he mastered his craft and have also written over 25 books on alternative art. In 2004 Christian Audigier licensed the rights to produce the high end Ed Hardy line which is based on Hardy’s work. Frenchman Audigier as a designer worked his way through the trenches at the likes of Diesel, Bisou Bisou and Levi and started his meteoric rise at Von Dutch. This label catapulted the truck hat onto the heads of college kids and celebs alike, making it a household name. He left in 2004 to create his own empire. Under the Audigier umbrella falls Ed Hardy, Smet, Crystal Rock, CBAR-A, Paco Chicano and CA. He has become a marketing genius whose name also finds itself shockingly on jewelry, skateboards, wine, water, vodka and even, WOW, a nightclub inside Vegas’s Treasure Island.

He loves to perform live and give each person an Ed Hardy shirt designed to show off individual assets. I got to experience the thrill of getting my own custom couture shirt and getting up close and personal with Adam Scissorhands himself! His proudest moments are watching people walk away in his shirts, which retail between $700-1000, with couture dresses going into the thousands of dollars. Here is an excerpt from our interview: Q: When did you first discover that cutting up shirts this way was your niche? A: In 2001, the very first cut into the very first shirt is when I knew I was on to something. It drew a huge crowd of people around me, they were wondering what I was doing and when I finished that first shirt, the applause hit me like an atomic bomb! I was hooked..

E piring fashion designers?

A: The fun-nest thing about my job is looking at my finished creation on the subject and seeing it walk away into the world to become a part of our culture. That’s a pretty cool feeling.

CUTTING EDGE FASHION: Continued

Q: What is your wildest "on the job” story?

A: The coolest? Hard to say, I’ve cut over 7000 custom pieces over the past 7 years and to be honest, not one sticks out to me. I think anyone who gets a shirt by me is cool. It’s a cool experience for everyone, the customer, the audience, and of course myself. It’s just cool!

A: There are a lot of them but unfortunately I never cut and tell. hehe Q: In five words or less, how would your friends describe you? A: Some people have A-D-D, my friends say I have A-D-A-M!

Q: How long have you been involved in fashion? Was it a childhood dream or did you fall into it? A: I’ve been in fashion for 17 years now, whoa, did I say 17? Its unbelievable to think its been that long and I’m still loving it. I never had a childhood dream, I’ve just always believed in loving whatever I chose to do. That’s really most important.. Q: Where do you see yourself in five years? A: The five year plan? That’s a funny question. I’m a very in the moment type person and don’t believe in 5 year goals because what you see yourself doing five years from now can sneak up on you in a week. Life is funny like that. EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN NEEDED!

Dickens on The Strand • Cont. from page 10 For example, GHF has just distributed truckloads of drywall to low- and moderate-income island residents to help them repair their hurricane-damaged homes. So, your ticket purchase buys much more than a chance to enjoy this venerable Victorian holiday festival. The decision to go forward with the event in light of the downtown devastation wrought by Ike might seem surprising, but the foundation didn't hesitate.

THE CENTER OF REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE IS SEEKING

YOUNG HEALTHY WOMEN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 20 - 30

"We decided that the community needed it, and that GHF needed it," said Clay Wade, the foundation's director of events. "All of us at GHF felt the strong need to continue with the tradition that is the grand holiday event for Galveston." "We're going to hold Dickens 2008 in the daylight, so that people can see what's going on, and that Galveston is going to come back," Wade said.

TO HELP A CHILDLESS COUPLE THROUGH EGG DONATION.

Selected candidates will receive up to $5000 compensation for time & travel.

"As in the beginning with Dickens, the whole point of this was to bring attention to the architecture of downtown. It became a backdrop for the festival, which is what it will be again this year."

Please contact Elva at 713-684-6144 We’ve Moved! 1015 Medical Center Blvd., Ste. 2100

Even as new visitors have joined the revelers at Dickens during each of its 35 years, many people have returned year after year, making the festival an indispensable part of their holiday observances. "We're depending upon them to do the same thing this year," Wade said. "Everybody's in it together." Tickets and complete information about Dickens on The Strand are available at www.dickensonthestrand.org. Tickets are also available at 110 Houston/Galveston area Kroger food stores.

Photos by J. Pamela & Domino Taylor

Erin Gray • Cont. From Page 26 Taylor: Definitely. Well, you surely don’t look it, but I hear you are about to become a grandmother, any comments on this wonderful new role? Gray: Just before I got on the airplane to come to Houston and this film festival, I got to hear the baby’s heartbeat during the sonogram, what an amazing sound… I am so excited! Taylor: Tell me about your current projects? Gray: I established a company, Heroes for Hire, which books celebrities at personal and speaking engagements and a production company with my husband, Wu Wei Entertainment. Also, I am a spokesperson for my charity, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and a board member for the Haven House, the oldest battered women’s shelter in the U.S. Taylor: I know that you have written and produced many PSAs with Women in Film, how long have been involved with this program? Gray: Over a decade, I am also hosting programs on The Lifetime network, “Drug & Alcohol Intervention Program.” Taylor: I know you have received many awards, the YWCA Women of Achievement

THE SCENE

Award, the Women’s Peace Award, 9 Community Service Awards, Television and Stage Awards and the 2002 Woman of the Year Award by the Commission for Women. What did you think when you heard you were going to be the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, that you will receive tonight? Gray: I told Hal, ‘Lifetime, I am not done yet! I haven’t got started! I am just getting my legs!’, but I am honored to receive this award and honored to be in this line of work. Taylor: Besides reading your book, you co-wrote with Mara Purl, “Act Right,” an award winning professional guide for actors, which many film students and actors have studied, what advice would you give actors and film makers that are just starting out in their craft? Gray: I tell everyone this, study everything in your field, start at community theatre, learn all areas of production, and go to auditions, local theatre is such a great training ground. I went from modeling to acting, and wanted to learn it all. The first time I was a on a movie set, I didn’t know all the ‘terms’ and what each crew member did, I learned it so I wouldn’t waste production time and knew I needed to work with the crew, it wasn’t all just lines and block-

33

ing. Study voices and accents, try to break in on voice–overs, that is great experience. Be extras on movie sets, get involved, be on time, keep your resume current with headshots and just always seek to learn more. Taylor: Some of your latest Indy films have been The Last Producer with Burt Reynolds, and Caught in the Headlights with Stacy Keach. Tell me what you have coming out in the future and when we will be able to view it. Gray: My new movies that I completed are, Loaded with Jessie Metcaffe, Dreams Awake to open soon, and I am the voice of the robot on the new Sci-Fi movie, Hunter Prey. Taylor: Well Erin, this has been just a delight, last night, this morning and today’s lunch, I am looking forward to tonight and want you to have a wonderful evening. Gray: Thank you Domino, it has been a real pleasure and many thanks to Hal Wixon, the film committee, and sponsors in this wonderful community for being so warm and friendly and with such high spirits after such devastation in the area. I admire all of you and many thanks again for a wonderful weekend and the treasured award. See you tonight!

The Space Rockers @ Scout Bar Wow -- What an out-of-this-world evening of space aged rock! The Space Rockers were set to make their Clear Lake debut back in September but that night, Ike came through instead. We caught them this month on the planet Earth and enjoyed their quest to save humans with a barrage of crisp & witty titles from the ‘80s, ‘90s & beyond. They'll be back in December at Scout Bar -- Be ready!

Ugly Dawg I caught a Billy Bourbon show at the CockEyed Seagull and scored a copy of their CD, "Trained Professional." If you don't have a copy of this fine album, start writing your letters to Santa now! The list of supporting musicians is a who's who of local players that would be impossible and unfair to try squeezing into this space. With fifteen listed originals PLUS two hidden tracks, this collection is a must-have for your collection if you are a fan of area music, super song writing, and well done arrangements. From the very first track "Gas Money" on, each and every track grabs ya the way only the good stuff can. Five picks up! The Billy Bourbin band will be playing at IkeFest II at Katies on December 14th.

Sherlock’s Pub

Heads -n- Tails

It was Thanksgiving week and before checking out the setups for The Hunger at the Scout Bar, I stopped in to meet up with friends at the Raggio-hosted electric jam at Heads & Tails -- I'm glad I did. Many were taking the week off and things were cooking with over a dozen of area musicians and audience in attendance. As the San Leon-based guest band Cymblem was taking stage, the story of this young group (oldest member of this gigging band turned 22 that night), who lost essentially all of their music gear from Hurricane Ike, transcended the evening. Cymblem (Kevin Kershner - Percussion, Chad Kershner - Guitar/Vocals, Mason Sterling - Bass, Chris Garza - Guitar/Vocals) displayed not only their high level of musical spirit on mostly borrowed instruments but moreover, you realize that this young band possesses the true South Texas spirit. In the words of Papa Blues, these guys are "young, they're excellent musicians, and good people at heart" and right there on the spot he donated his Line 6 Spider to the band who were otherwise playing on borrowed gear. Good for Papa Blues. Catch them playing at IkeFest II at Katies.
