Krewe du Lac’s Royal Ball Aboard the Star Gazer Party Boat during Yachty Gras

Saturday, February 21 If throwing beads from a float during Mardi Gras is memorable, we’re not quite sure how to describe throwing beads from the largest boat on the water to thousands of Mardi Gras revelers lined up along the Kemah Boardwalk during Yachty Gras. The Yachty Gras Boat Parade is an annual Mardi Gras event with a unique twist only found in Kemah. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the popular event, and this year’s theme is “Recovery of the Sea.” If you own a boat with an appropriately silenced exhaust system, you can form your own private “Krewe,” decorate the boat with a particular theme and participate in the parade.

But don’t worry if you don’t own a boat as the best way to experience Yachty Gras is with the official Krewe of Kemah, Krewe du Lac, aboard the flagship of the parade, the Star Gazer. This formal event (black-tie optional or Mardi Gras costume attire only) is the finest and most unique Mardi Gras party, complete with live music, dancing and presentation of the Royal Court. Alternative metal act Powerman 5000 has decided it’s time for another run at the limelight with a new single about to be released and a new tour that just kicked off. After stops in New York, Massachusetts and North Carolina, the group will head straight to Texas for shows at all three Scout Bars including a much-anticipated return to Clear Lake on Thursday, February 12. Then it’s off to California for the group which has overcome record label collapses and a revolving door of band members coming and going in recent years. The current group includes “EVAN9” and “VELKRO” on guitars, “X51” on bass, “GFLASH” behind the drums and, of course, the popular frontman “SPIDER.” Younger brother of Rob Zombie, Spider founded the Boston-based underground electro-metal band in 1994. It earned a popular cult following along the East Coast before relocating to the west coast. Signature singles include "When Worlds Collide" and "Nobody's Real."

The new month of the new year finds new changes everywhere and at the Cockeyed Seagull, we caught two local band doing just that, Hourglass and The Sharks. The central Hourglass band which include brothers Mark and Kevin Fenton, Claudia Hammond on guitar and vocals, and drummer Steve Davis is one of my favorite local bands covering the smooth and easy listening rock lineup

One of the first times I became aware of this was seeing Mama Cass perform at the Hart Festival and realized the Texas Gulf Coast spirit is like no other. Fast forward a few years and a hurricane to boot to the Green Parrot and we find that strong spirit still there with Mama Cass and the San Leon/Bacliff region. 2nd Annual Saint Arnold One Pot Showdown

Saint Arnold Brewing Company founder Brock Wagner, pictured in center, with members of The SCENE Brew Crew. Take one part chili cookoff, one part stew stampede, one part gumbo gauntlet and five parts beer sampling. Heat to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally, and there you have the Saint Arnold’s 2nd Annual One Pot Showdown. The sold out event and food drive, which benefitted the Houston Food Bank’s effort to feed Hurricane Ike victims, featured 30 cooking teams who competed using their best Saint Arnold beer related recipes. A firstever Best Booth Spirit Award contest was added this year and The SCENE Brew Crew was there to confirm there was plenty of spirit. Congratulations to the entire Saint Arnold Brewing Company team, the volunteers, the participants and everyone who came out as the event was a great success. We look forward to next year’s event in Saint Arnold’s brand new facility.

Everyone scores at EJ’s Sports Bar The “scene” is a recent Friday night at EJ’s Sports Bar at 435 El Dorado in Webster. EJ’s is the newest bar to hit Clear Lake. But judging by the crowd and atmosphere, the rookie season is over and this place is positioned to compete among the best. On this night there is a nice crowd and action in every corner ranging from the live music (Madigan) on the stage, to the patrons sitting at the center wraparound bar, to an attractive couple shooting pool, to a couple fellows testing their aim at Big Buck Safari. And while I can’t confirm it, there appears to be a private party going on in the sperate VIP room. There is something for everyone. Sports fans can enjoy catching the games and fights, including Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Pay Per

Views, on the 12 big screens and projection screens strategically located throughout the bar. Pub fans can play darts and pool while enjoying some brew on draft (Tuesday is pitcher night and Wednesday is Big Ass Beer night). They have all the popular video games incase you want to get your “Golden-Tee on,” live music on Fridays, a DJ on Saturdays and an attractive staff for all days. JANUARY MMA RECAP Packed house gets a great show at the Urban Rumble III By Mike Taylor January was a busy month in the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Affliction and, locally, the MMA Syndicate all put on shows. The UFC pushed the action with two payper-view (PPV) cards, UFC 93 Franklin vs. Henderson and the much-anticipated, highly promoted UFC 94 St. Pierre vs. Penn 2. Fighting live in Dublin, Ireland, the UFC delivered some hardhitting overseas MMA with UFC 93. Taking advantage of the time difference, we headed for Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash and Grill to watch the bouts live at 2pm. (Check out the opposite page for more about Hugh & Jeff’s.) Easily the top fight of UFC 93 pitted Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis against Chris Lytle. They gave the Irish fans in attendance and those watching via PPV a hard-hitting fight that never hit the ground. They applauded each other openly during the fight to a level I’ve never seen, R E S P E C T! Davis won the split decision, but both men looked as though they had fought a polar bear. People still not hip to how fast MMA is moving should consider this, Affliction started as a t-shirt line for MMA fighters and fans. Now they have their own PPV events. Affliction’s Local/Regional Events

second event aired last month and featured their ace card and possible the top draw in MMA, Fedor Emelianenko. They pitted Fedor against former UFC heavyweight champion Andre Arlovski. His second former UFC champ as an oppopntentin as many fights. Arlovski looked to be a good fight for the Russian, but when he pinned Emelianenko in the corner, he got careless and got knocked out. WOW! Fedor is two for two, in two rounds total since joining Affliction’s roster. Hopefully a fullscale rivalry breaks out between the UFC and Affliction, that’s twice the fights. - Continued on Next Page

The UFC and Affliction’s fights were great, but the highlight of the MMA month locally came courtesy of the MMA Syndicate. A local MMA fight league, the MMA Syndicate put on its third and best show, Urban Rumble III. Broadcast live via the Internet by beatdowntv.com from Pasadena Convention Center, the URC III showcased its new cage to the entire world. The first thing you see as you clear the entrance is the cage. These guys aren’t playing around. My heart was jacked, and I wasn’t even fighting. Thank God! The new cage was put to test right away as Brian Mellancon earned his first professional victory. Camera men mounted above the cage offered a new perspective for the large screens. The third fight made good use of the new angle capturing a flurry of punches delivered to Jared Taylor. Anyone can get caught in a bad position, it happens. But it takes an intensely trained body and mind to make it through, stand up, and strike back with the fervor that Jared showed the crowd. With the first round over I was starting to smell a comeback, but what we actually got was the knockout of the night. Throwing vicious combos, Jared set

In the co-main event, veteran Chad Cook submitted Katana Cagefighting Light Heavywieght Champ and crowd favorite Chris Reed with a heel hook. And in the main event, former UFC fighter and The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 reality star Sam Hogar treated MMA vet Johnathan Ivey like a punching bag eventually winning by submission in the third round. All nine fights were high energy, explosive, and packed with skilled fighters from local training facilitates. Representing Houston were 4oz Fight Club, Houston Metro Fight Club, Submission Boxing Academy, Bushi Ban and Miletich Fighting Systems Houston. It was a great show and we look forward to the next one.

Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash and Grill We had heard many great things about Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash and Grill, but our call-to-action for checking it out on a recent Saturday afternoon was the fact it was the only local bar airing the UFC 93 Pay Per View from Ireland LIVE that we could find. Yes, we apparently weren’t willing to wait and watch the American PPV viewing that night on tape delay. Although the grill is not complete and there are some ambitious, if not spectacular, plans for the upstairs, the bar and waiting area is open and beautiful. There is impressive woodwork, aquariums, leather recliners, plasma screens and former SCENE covergirl Vanessa behind the bar. I was able to watch the fights in a great setting, enjoying adult beverages with friends while my Expedition got an unbelievable car wash and detailing. I literally fell in love with it all over again as it looked as good as the day I drove it off the lot. I will be back, and I strongly recommend checking them out!

Don’t slather yourself in cologne, but DO wear it. A man should smell nice when you hug him or get close to him – we don’t want to smell you from across the room. If a woman finds you attractive, she will want to get close enough to smell you. If she smells you from across the table, she will perceive you as trying too hard. Don’t wear oversized clothing. Bigger guys tend to wear big baggy clothes and this looks sloppy. Many women will be attracted to a big, beefy guy. Don’t attempt to hide yourself! Don’t wear wrinkled clothing! Of all the women I interviewed, this came up the most. It shows complete lack of self-concern or interest. We ALL wear wrinkled clothes from time to time, but this is one example of when you want to look sharp. Do attempt to wear something fashionable. Not “trendy,” but something with the

As a writer, I am often times asked to write something on or explore a topic I may not be familiar with. Recently received a request for grooming and dating tips for a speed dating website. As a person married for 16 years, I thought this might be a challenge, and something I could attempt to sink my teeth into.

I pondered dating, and how it has changed over the years. How now, meeting people online, using match-making services, and speeddating are not only no longer taboo, but almost a necessity to meeting quality people. Today’s busy schedules can limit our time enjoying the places, hobbies and organizations that are great avenues to meet interesting people. If you could narrow down every crowded room to the top three people you connect with, life would be easier. And today’s dating world allows you to do just that. So with this in mind, I thought, “How does our image impact people on a first date? What should I do to make an impression, without TRYING to impress.” And what I discovered are that these concepts are not really very far off from every day life, and there is a definite art to introducing yourself to any single person or group of people for the very first time.

First, find out some more info about your meeting. Will it be daytime or night time? Inside or Outside? Casual or Elegant? Here are just a few key tips to think about when putting together your first impression. Ladies: Don’t dress too sexy. This is a sure-fire thing to get a man thinking about all the wrong things. If he finds you attractive, he will find you attractive in more appropriate clothing. If he ONLY finds you attractive in sexy clothing you are looking for a let down! Leave something to the imagination. Don’t dress overly stiff either. A power suit, penny loafers and a key chain hanging off the side of your pants is a sure way to scare a man to death! You want him to get to know you without him wondering if you’re going to crush his balls! Don’t over accessorize in expensive jewelry and accessories. You don’t want to give off the impression that you only enjoy things he may or may not be able to afford! Do go for “pretty” instead of “sexy.” If you are dressed “pretty” and smell nice for example, he will definitely find you “sexy” but much more approachable. Men can sometimes be intimidated if you are too aggressive. The goal in dating is to find out who someone actually is rather than to force traits out of him/her with too much sexual energy or false pretenses. Do wear your hair and make-up as you would typically wear them. You at least want him to recognize you on your second date! You want him to be attracted to your typical daily look. Do consider a sun dress, Capri pants or comfortable jeans for an outdoor date. If you want to feel “cute” in a pair of heels but realize that the outdoor date requires a bit of walking – just bring a back up pair!

The Bay Area Harbour Playhouse announces classes in Musical Theatre and Theatre Arts for the Spring 2009 season. All classes begin the week of Feb. 9 and continue for 8 to 10 weeks with performances on Saturdays in April. Advanced Musical Theatre requires auditions on Sat., Feb. 7 at 2 pm and the class meets on Thursdays from 5 to 6:30 pm. Beginning Musical Theatre meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 6:30 pm. Theatre Arts class for ages 6 to 9 year olds meets on Mondays from 5 to 6:30 pm. Theatre Arts Class for ages 10 and up meets on Wednesday from 5 to 6:30pm. March is one of the best months to photograph birding along The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trails. Flocks of White Pelicans spend their winter along the coastal areas of Seabrook from October to April. Trees are budding and the coastal grasses are flush with new growth along the brilliant sunrises and sunsets on the water. For photographers, both experienced and novice, the 3rd Annual Seabrook Coastal Photo Workshop by Ruth Burke is March 7 & 8, 2009. This annual tradition is not only fun, but provides valuable information on capturing images and creating a fine art print with the guidance of internationally known and published photographer Ruth Burke. This workshop will combine location photography of nature, water birds, marine and coastal subjects.

Photoshop will be discussed and demonstrated with hand-outs to use as a guide when preparing photographs for

Love You Forever February is a romantic month and art is honoring Valentine’s Day and all the romance that goes with that day. A new exhibit, “Love You Forever – Shelia McGraw – A Retrospective” will open February 12 and run through March 19 at The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake (TAACCL). Original art and workings drawings from bestsellers, Love You Forever, I Promise I’ll Find You and Pussycats Everywhere will be displayed. New paintings, including portraits, floral still lifes, organic color-field paintings, figurative paintings and drawings will also be featured. A reception and book signing will take place February 12 from 5:00 - 8:30 p.m. and a special book signing on Valentine’s Day, February 14 will be from noon to 2:00 p.m.

Burke will work with each participant, regardless of their skill level or type of equipment to ensure that everyone leaves the workshop with new ideas about creating great photographs.

MARDI GRAS GALVESTON 2009 More than 200,000 people attend Mardi Gras! Galveston annually to experience the party of a lifetime as the island comes alive with 11 extravagant parades, more than 50 galas and festive activities including bead throwing, live entertainment, food and bead vendors, a festive carnival, and the best cuisine the Gulf Coast has to offer. “Mardi Gras! Galveston is designed to entertain people of all ages,” said Lou Muller, executive director for the Galveston Island Park Board. “This celebration is one of the most popular in Texas and is full of laughter, excitement and incredible things to do and see.” As part of the family entertainment, there are a number of beachfront and Strand parades ranging from the lavish Momus Grand Night, Krewe of Gambrinus and Krewe of Aquarius; Krewe de Vroom (motorcycles), Fire truck Parade (area firefighters), Krewe of Barkus and Meow (children and their pets, sponsored by the Galveston Island Humane Society), Munchkin Parade (kid size floats with small fry bead throwers), Bicycle Parade and Truck Parade. Galas and pageants include the Annual Treasure Ball Pageant, benefiting Galveston Catholic Schools; Special Peoples Ball, benefiting Transitional Learning Center; and Royal Krewe of Barkus & Meow, benefiting the Galveston Island Humane Society. MORE PROGRESS TO REPORT IN KEMAH Landry’s open • Zone 504 rebuilding • Kemah Pan Jam coming in March Month after month, we are still watching and waiting and witnessing the resurgence of our community. In every issue of The SCENE since the storm, including the October issue that required gas generators to power our computers, we’ve written about the resilience of our business owners and residents. We all fight to make a come back as fully as we can to overcome the obstacles laid down by Hurricane Ike back in September. This month our covers feature two more businesses, Mario’s Italian Restaurant in Seabrook and the Green Parrot Bar & Grill in San Leon, that suffered such extreme damage, that it took them a little longer than many to get back going.

KEMAH UPDATE We are happy to announce that

Landry’s Seafood House at the Kemah Boardwalk is now open. It joins the Aquarium, Red Sushi, Chart House, Babin’s Seafood House, Saltgrass Steak House, Cadillac Bar and the original Joe’s Crab Shack as open for business and leaving the Flying Dutchman as the only restaurant at the Boardwalk yet to reopen. We are also happy to announce that Zone 504 Sports Bar in Kemah is scheduled to reopen either later this month or in early March. Check out Zone’s ad on the flip side of this issue.

Also making a return in Kemah is the Pan Jam Steel Drum Festival. The 2008 event was cancelled because of Hurricane Ike. But the 2009 event has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 21. See the ad on the opposite page for more details.

Vogt prides herself on being involved and giving back to her community. Mario’s was the last restaurant open in Seabrook as Hurricane Ike’s surge took over the shores. She would later call it the “last supper.” Vogt was named one of “Houston’s Hurricane Heroes” by Great Day Houston for feeding more than 400 Coast Guard personnel based out of the Hilton immediately following the storm. Additionally, every Sunday Mario’s Seabrook seated 300 to 400 in a make shift drive thru providing a hot pasta meal and salad for any passers-by. On February 28, from 9am to noon, Vogt – along with the University of St.
