MARCH 2009
Everyone’s Irish for a Day St. Patty’s (Tuesday, March 17) is near and that can only mean one thing: Time to get your shamrock on! People along the Texas coast rarely need an excuse to spend the day with friends and a cold beverage at a local pub or club, but if there was ever a reason to get out and party, it’s to pay tribute to one of our favorite Irish guys, Saint Patrick. Ireland is not only a land of friendly people and warm cheer, but the ancient birthplace of good times. On St. Patrick’s Day, everyone is Irish and everything is about having a good time. As a result, there are a number of local pubs, clubs and bars ready and willing to host your own personal St. Patrick’s Day party.
Sherlock’s Baker St. Pub. Sherlock’s features an annual St. Patty’s Day blow-out complete with and live music from The Crisis. The crew at Berryhill Baja Grill Baybrook are always looking for a reason to celebrate and this year, St. Patrick’s Day is no exception as they will be serving Big Ass Beer Specials, $5 Jose Cuervo Frozen Ritas and 99¢ tamales.

Doc’s Upper Deck’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Bash will feature plenty of drink specials, green beer and live music with Stripper’s Lie. The Cock-Eyed Seagull will host the Sexy Leprechaun & Pot of Gold contest while serving up corned beef cabbage, green beer, $5 Irish Car Bombs and $4 Jamesons. - Continued on Page 41
She’s Back! It only seems appropriate that on the last Friday before this issue went to press, we learned that our favorite St. Patrick’s Day cover girl Christina is back behind the bar. Last year we reported from Christina’s retirement party as she left the service industry and her position as manager of the Cock-Eyed Seagull to enter the 9-to-5 world of oil and gas. Although we are sorry the retirement didn’t work out, the local service industry is stronger now that she is back in the world of Beer and Liquor. Not only is she back, but at a familiar address as she is now behind the bar at Doc’s Upper Deck Sports Bar bringing back memories of her days of Rock Neutney’s Sports Bar which was once at that same location. So stop in at 18301A Egret Bay Blvd. to enjoy a pint and welcome Christina back.

THE TREE HOUSE OFFERS A PERSONAL TOUCH By SHANNON MILLER Conveniently located on NASA Road One amid a variety of shops in the Village Real Shopping Center, you will find The Tree House. Owners Gerald and Sherry Emery, look forward to celebrating their 20-year anniversary of The Tree House next year, making it one of the longtime, legendary establishments of Clear Lake. Asked to describe the Tree House, Sherry commented, “It’s a momand-pop place, complete with good drinks, home-cooking, loyal customers, and lots of sports talk.” It is a place where the staff will know your name by
the time you leave. Sherry said, “You are more than just a face around here!” March, the month of Madness, starts and ends with the NCAA tournament shown at The Tree House on the 10 flat
screen TVs. Ice cold buckets of beer (six for $13) and appetizers are available for March Madness maniacs to cheer on their favorite team. For St. Patrick’s Day (March 17), get a taste of Sherry’s homemade Texas Irish Stew, hear the musical entertainment of
Tom Ashbridge complete with plenty of cold beer and Irish party favors. Bloody Marys and Screwdrivers are always $3, but patrons can always ask for their favorite elixir. Happy hour runs seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The eclectic musical talents of Tom Ashbridge, Johnny Felder, Larry Emerson, Rodney Raspberry, Bill Parrish and DJ Doug can be heard Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights in March. XFC Texas Battleground • From pg 36
In February, Swick went on record saying he would “really like to have a bout that’s going to put me in the top ranking if I have a really good performance and I win.” Swick was hoping for a bout with top contender Thiago Alves, who is expected to get a title shot against Georges St. Pierre. Just before this issue went to press, MMAjunkie.com reported Swick will be returning to action at UFC 99 against "The Ultimate Fighter 6" cast member and undefeated fighter Ben Saunders. Though not yet officially announced by the organization, UFC 99 is expected to take place on June 13 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany.
Other action included Izzy Johnson (Round One) defeating Ryan Lopez (USA Stars) in the first round (1:13) with a guillotine choke; Tony Melton (Fight Time Fitness) winning an unanimous decision over Grady Briley (USA Stars; Daniel Gantman (American Top Team) tapping out Cedric Marks (Grapplers Domain) in the first round (2:06) with a triangle choke; Brandon Farran (LA Boxing) submitting Conan Cano (Team Conan) in the first round (2:32) with a rear naked choke; Roy Babcock (Lone Wolf MMA) forcing a tap from Matthew Green (Round One) in the first round (1:49) with a triangle choke;

Funksion
Loose Notes by Andy Eng After being robbed by Ike last year and the winter slow season, live music began heating things up in the month of February. We attended no fewer than 28 shows and witnessed the people of the region coming alive again in big ways. Highlights for the month were catching IkeFest bands Funksion, Abraham's Tree, and Slide Effect heating up the dance floors everywhere. We enjoyed Ezra Charles on T-Bone Tom's sunny patio on perhaps the most beautiful Sunday afternoon following the Kemah Mardi Gras Truck Parade. Massive guitar performances were enjoyed this month at Katie's from the likes of Scott McGill, James Reese and Lynn Raggio. Harp players David Nevling and Pat Beadles were pounding away stronger than ever. Wood & Wind rolled out three new originals (more please) and are sounding better than ever. Valentines Day vocals by Kevin Fenton and Claudia Hammond at Don Julio's made us swoon. Venue enhancements were spotted at EJ's Sports Bar and Heads -n- Tails. Watch out, March is looking even better, and we hope you get a chance to crawl out of your old stale nest, venture forth and enjoy your live music SCENE. Award-winning funk band Zwee on the Star Fleet during the Krewe du Lac Royal Ball at Yachty Gras.
Above: Carl Piano Smith Trio at Bakkhus in Kemah At Right: Dave Nevling & The Blues Kats at Heads -n- Tails --------------------------------------------------Guitar Gusto: Katie’s is amongst the best SCENE places to catch Sunday night live music. They host live music seven nights a week. We honed in on Katie’s last month and caught fine guitar playing from Scott McGill at his weekly Tuesday session and the James Reese entourage at the Amigos Jam. Scott's friends told us he's been playing for over 50 years and James Reese mentioned he actively plays with four to five bands of various genre which makes a lot of sense when you hear the two lay it down. Playing with these two leads were Bob Emmons and Steve Redman (bass) along with Benny Brasket and Vinny Maltabana (drums). A special treat was enjoyed by all with the debut performance of James Reese's 12-year old pupil/protege, Hunter Hagdorn. The kid rocked! --------------------------------------------------In February we found out that Joel of Joel's Ugly Dawg used to be a gigging musician. He must have been a good one because the music he books is consistently good. We can't wait to see his band schedule for the coming months, and I hear he’s adding a regular acoustic night into the mix. I can't wait! - Cont. on Page 34

SCENE BREWERY TOUR
BREWING UP SOME BUSINESS Southern Star Brewing Company off to a big start By John Ennis The SCENE is a large warehouse along the southern border of the beautiful Texas Pineywoods in Conroe. Inside this facility there are all kinds of piping, plumbing and odd-looking multicolored tanks. One bright yellow tank is named “Pac Man,” another is “Dr. Seuss” and a huge orange one is labeled “Lloyd.” There is a monstrous, two-story icebox the size of a four-car garage at one end of the building and various contraptions in between. To many, this is simply an industrial mess of non-description. But to the home brewers and beer enthusiasts who have traveled from miles away on this Saturday afternoon
Southern Star Brewing Company Founder Brian Hutchins talks during a recent brewery tour. JOHN ENNIS PHOTOS
to check out one of the state’s newest and most-promising breweries, this is awesome! Southern Star Brewing Company brewed their first batch of beer, Pine Belt Pale (Ale), just one year ago in March of 2008. Founded by former Saint Arnold’s head brewer Dave Fougeron and his friend Brian Hutchins, Southern Star will be celebrating their first anniversary with a special party on Friday, March 27 complete with a live band and the all-important tasting bar.
SCENE Publisher John Ennis, far right, enjoys a cold one with Faust Vice President Jack Law, far left, and Anheuser Busch Region Market Manager Gabriel Avendano, center.
Epicurean Evening wasn’t just about the great food The 2009 Epicurean Evening at Space Center Houston was a blast as always. Awesome food, great entertainment and a solid supply and variety of beer thanks to the folks at Faust Distributing Company and Silver Eagle Distributing. Faust came up big with much-coveted beers including Shiner 99, Stella Artois and Hoegaarden among others. In addition to Silver Eagle staples such as Bud Light, they served up Landshark, ZiegenBock Amber and Shock Top Belgian White. It was truly a beer drinker’s paradise. (See Epicurean
Anyone familiar with the brewing industry knows simply opening a brewery is a far cry from getting a license to print money. A lot of work and even more money goes into getting this operation up and running far before dollar No. 1 is made. - Continued on Next Page

With a wall of high-definition screens that rivals the largest Casino Sports Book, friendly servers, a diverse menu that ranges from the Phat Elvis Burger to the VIP Ribeye and a double decker happy hour that includes $2 off all 22 oz. drafts and $3 regular Vegas Fries, the Vegas Grill is a great place to enjoy a brew and catch some sports. So swing over and order a Blonde from the blonde, and tell them The SCENE sent you.

Southern Star Brewing • Cont. From Previous Page "We were able to build this warehouse and do most of the construction ourselves which saved us tens of thousands of dollars,” explained Hutchins. But even with those savings, the start-up costs for a brewery the size of Southern Star is huge. So the fellows have not wasted any time pursuing a return on their investment and have come a long way in just under a year. Their first brew, Pine Belt Pale, has enjoyed moderate distribution in Texas, specifically Houston, Dallas, College Station and Austin. But with the help of a second out-of-state distributor, Pine Belt Pale is now available in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina and even Chicago, Illinois. Probably the most interesting decision Southern Star made was to can – not bottle – their beer. Despite common consumer perception, canned beer is of no lesser quality than that poured from the traditional brown glass bottle one would expect to find a craft beer in. As a matter of fact, Hutchins is quick to explain why the canning route – which was actually a more expensive method for their startup brewery – is better for maintaining the quality of the beer than bottling it. Plus, it allows Fougeron and Hutchins, both avid fishermen, to accommodate their fellow outdoor beer enthusiasts and be more environmentally friendly at the same time. In addition to Pine Belt Pale, Southern Star brews a Dortmund style lager called Logger, a Bamberg German style Rauchbier simply called Rauchbier, a blonde style called Bombshell Blonde and a very tasty brew called Buried Hatchett Stout. With the exception of the Pine Belt Pale, all are currently only available in kegs. The Bombshell Blonde should soon be in 12-ounce cans. The Buried Hatchett Stout, which started out as a seasonal and recently received an A+ rating from Beer Advocate has sold so
well, it will be following suit in 16-ounce cans this summer. On this recent Saturday during the Southern Star tour, we were able to sample the Bombshell Blonde, Pine Belt Pale and Buried Hatchett Stout. All were tasty although this beer enthusiast has to agree with the A+ rating Beer Advocate gave the Buried Hatchett Stout. So much so that by the time this issue hits the street, I hope to find a place closer to Clear Lake than the Flying Saucer downtown When the beer is flowing, even members of that serves it on tap. competing home brewing clubs can get along.
The brewery tours are free to the public and start at 1 p.m. every Saturday. All you have to do is purchase a Southern Star souvenir glass, I recommend the large for $7, and the “samplings” are free! On this particular Saturday the Kuykendahl Gran Brewers Homebrew Club (KGB) was at the brewery grilling up free burgers and hot dogs while talking friendly smack to the members of the rival Bay Area Mashtronauts and Houston Foam Rangers homebrew clubs in attendance. Visit www.southernstarbrewery.com to learn more about the brewery, the beer, the tours and the upcoming anniversary celebration. And next time you find yourself at a local bar in an effort to quench your thirst, ask them if they have any Southern Star brews.
New Brew Crew Discovery: BLOUT If you really love beer with a passion, chances are you have enjoyed a pint of two beers mixed together. A Black and Tan (Bass Pale Ale and Guinness) and Half-and-Half (Harp and Guinness) are two popular favorites. Last month we wrote about Stamber, which mixes a Stout and Amber. We discovered this at the Saint Arnold brewery mixing Saint Arnold Winter Stout and Saint Arnold Amber. This month try a Blout, mixing a Blonde and a Stout. This concept is the result of a recent trip to Southern Star Brewery where we enjoyed more than a few Bombshell Blondes and Buried Hatchet Stouts mixed together.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS: THE FASTEST-GROWING SPORT IN AMERICA
MIKE “THE QUICK” SWICK Clear Lake product back on UFC title shot hunt By John Ennis There was a time just a couple years ago when Clear Lake High School graduate Mike Swick was among the hottest and most marketable fighters in the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). He was coming off a successful appearance in the inaugural season of the groundbreaking television show, The Ultimate Fighter. Despite not winning the
show, he earned a spot in the UFC and would go on to finish each of his first four UFC fights in the first round in impressive and explosive fashion. He continued up the middleweight ranks winning a hard-fought decision over middleweight contender David Loiseau improving his overall MMA record to 10-1 and earning him a prime spot on the UFC’s first-ever event in Texas. Held in Houston on April 7, 2007, with Swick as one of the prime promotional pieces, UFC 69 would surpass the Rolling Stone’s as the highest grossing event in Toyota Cen-
ter history and signalled the UFC’s move into the mainstream by making the cover of Sports Illustrated. But Swick would lose to Yushin Okami at the event and didn’t fight for almost a year. He dropped down to welterweight and won two “lackluster” decisions before getting back to his earlier ways by knocking out Jonathan Goulet in 33 seconds last December and improving his UFC record to 8-1 and making a case for himself as a contender, this time at welterweight. - Continued on Page 35

Much to the displeasure of their wives, The SCENE’s Mixed Martial Arts section is edited by John Ennis, shown at left defending a submission attempt, and Mike Taylor, pictured at right demonstrating a solid chin. Although both are quick to admit they prefer co-ed grappling over exchanging strikes with guys in their weight class, they are committed to providing the Texas coast with the best coverage of both local and international Mixed Martial Arts.

Urban Rumble IV scheduled! It appears our friends at MMA Syndicate and the Urban Rumble Championships (URC) have state commission approval to host Urban Rumble IV on May 23 at the Pasadena Convention Center. No word yet on the fight card, but it is safe to assume the event will be 100% Mixed Martial Arts with no boxing and inside a cage like the action-packed Urban Rumble III was this past January. The URC established itself as a premier local fighting organization, and we at The SCENE look forward to bringing you more information about the Urban Rumble IV in upcoming issues.

Loose Notes • Continued From Page 45 After a full day in the Galveston Mardi Gras parades and pouring rain, a bunch of us enjoyed a friendly Valentine’s evening at Don Julio’s soaking in the warm, easy listening tunes from Hourglass’ Kevin Fenton and Claudia Hammond. I've been itching for some good, easy listening stuff (Carly Simon, Carole King, Justin Hayward) that can be enjoyed while carrying on a civil conversation and this evening scratched that itch nicely. More please! ----------------------------Holly Thrailkill showed me the new 2009 Bodacious Tatas menu at their Cockeyed Seagull show last month, and is it packed! Crammed with a full slate of classic dishes and specials, fans should have tons of fun cooking up one doozie of a party. You'll be able to catch the Bodacious Tatas and their new menu in March when outdoor music returns to the Monkey Bar. Spring fever--Bring it on! --------------------------------------------------We stopped in to checkout the new layout at EJ’s Sports Bar in February. With plenty of new seating and with one of the larger dance floors in the area, EJ's can easily become a music venue of choice with Kathy and Jessie holding down the fort. This evening, we caught Houston's own Seth Candan (www.myspace.com/sethcandan). Back in the ‘70s, you often
THE SCENE
would have to pick between country or rock with little room for in between. Fast forward to today and listen to Seth's music, you’ll realize he has figured out how to wire the two together and we liked what we heard. With over 31,000 visitors and a tad under 900 friends on his myspace, we're not alone. --------------------------------------------------It took Heads -n- Tails owner, Erik "Forrest" Miller, less than a year to listen to his customers and get things figured out--And boy, does he have the gumption! If you haven't seen the new layout, do so immediately. Then do so again the weekend of April 4 and 5 when they host the GBAMA/MBS "Smoke on the Bayou" festival. The remodeled interior opens up to a large music stage that can easily handle the BIGGER bands such as C.C. Rider. The spacious dance area is one of the larger floors in the neighborhood and easily handled the entire Krewe de Lac party with ease. Nice job, Forrest!

Inside Out Beauty • Cont. From Page 28 We can work on our bodies, work on our minds and even work on our souls. But unfortunately our soul isn’t showing, so we must use our bodies as a vehicle. I had always thought of myself as a tall, voluptuous blonde – when I was 15, brunette, flat as a pancake and about 80 pounds. For some reason, I felt I could do my life’s work better if that’s what I looked like. (And maybe many people think that in one way or another.) I worked hard to have all of that eventually fall into place – well, except for the “tall” part. In the end, I don’t think I am any better of a stylist with blond hair, but I feel happy and much stronger knowing that I can achieve dreams, go for what I want and that I had the wherewith to bring out that inner vision. So, look in the mirror – or ask a family member – to find what makes you YOU? Is it your quirkiness, goofiness, sensitivity or sarcasm? What trait expresses itself the most? Find a make-up artist and ask them the best way to bring out that feature. (For men, use your facial hair or hairstyle.) How do you see yourself in your dreams? You deserve to let that show. Maybe find a dermatologist for your skin, a dentist for your smile or even a personal trainer so you can remove parts of you that keep you inhibited. We all deserve to shine and be perceived as beautiful. And remember, it doesn’t matter what you look like while you are volunteering at a homeless shelter, helping someone rebuild after a storm or working in a hospice. It just helps us feel more whole, and when we are more whole we spend less time searching for our other parts, and we can begin to help others find theirs. And that to me is true beauty.

MARCH 2009
COVER STORY
IT’S T-BONE TOM’S SEASON By BETSEY ENNIS
March at T-Bone’s means live music is back and the crawfish are in season.
March in Clear Lake means more and more fabulous outdoor weather. For those who enjoy dining (or drinking) outdoors, one of the largest and most entertaining patios out there is T-Bone Tom’s Backyard.
Enjoy a newly refurbished deck and even a few specials: Happy hour is Monday through Friday 5 to 7 p.m. (excluding holidays) with $1.25 drafts and $2.25 longnecks. One special you can’t get inside is the “Backyard Happy Hour” special on their shrimp cocktail for $1.99.
Yes, it’s that time of year! The music’s back, the happy hour specials are tempting and the food is consistently delicious. Since the intrusion of Ike along the shores of Kemah last September, it’s taken a few businesses more than a couple of weeks to get back up and going. But since December, TBone Tom’s reports record-breaking community support. General Manager Anna Hardin humbly insisted, “We are so grateful for our customers. They missed us and now they are coming back, and we just feel so blessed.” She explained how meticulously the staff tried to make “home away from home” seem as unmarred as possible. The silver lining to having suffered 5.5 feet of water was that they got all-new equipment and all-newly arranged work areas (which affords them more productivity in a more efficiently arranged space). “Everything you see is new. Basically the only things that survived were the flat screen TV in the main dining room, our stainless steel tables and the chairs inside the restaurant, which we had to take one apart one by one and salvaged them. Everything else is brand new.”
The restaurant and bar are open seven days a week. Enjoy live music daily (except Mondays). Enjoy Backyard drinks until 2 a.m. daily – and almost as importantly, patrons can appreciate the new multi-stall restrooms outside.
“We tried to put (the restaurant) back the way it was, but better,” she said. “Above all, the most important factor was keeping our quality the same.”
T-bone Tom’s is located at 707 Highway 146 in Kemah – just south of the Kemah / Seabrook bridge. Be sure to tell them, you saw them in The SCENE.
The menu is back and so are the T-Bone’s Plate Lunches – “We’re not missing a beat,” Hardin said.
The day T-bone Tom’s opened back up for business following Hurricane Ike, Astronaut Clayton Anderson, who spent 152 days in space last year aboard the International Space Station (ISS), made a special presentation with memorabilia from his flight to T-bone Tom’s owners Barry and Melissa Terrell.
She also pointed out something new: Prime Rib on the weekends. It’s an off-menu special. That way, they’re able to make their French dip. Locals know

INSIDE OUT BEAUTY A guilty pleasure for me right now is the fun, wildly revealing reality TV show, True Beauty. The show showcases an outer beauty challenge such as a photo shoot, or fashion show and secretly records the models for an unbeknownst to them inner beauty challenge as well. These are challenges that measure psychological factors such as honesty, compassion, integrity and kindness.

So what really is true beauty? And how is it measured? While there is some science behind what is widely thought of as beautiful, beauty is actually a subjective experience- hence the term of “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” It’s a gentle balance of harmony, nature and what makes us feel. Most of us are familiar with the beautiful person who skates through life with everything supposedly handed to them and the confidence they have that makes us envy them (when usually the truth is somewhere in the middle). And we all know the beautiful person who acts so ugly it erodes their beauty like a rusty nail. And my favorite: the at-firstglance-not-as-attractive person whose soul just shines through their skin and with every kind word or good deed becomes more and more beautiful.

So whether or not we were born with that perfect face, we all have the potential to become beautiful people. As a “personal artist,” my goal in life is to help others reach that potential. It is my job to turn your beauty inside out. Our inner traits do show on our outer being. I recommend searching your soul and bringing those traits to light. What I mean is, if you are witty and full of expression, wax those eyebrows to give them a shape that allows your expression to be seen. Or maybe we tend to laugh a lot with an open mouth, keep those teeth whitened and maybe kissed with a little gloss so that your laugh becomes even more infectious. Maybe you are always a little flustered, or blushing. Try and make it part of who you are instead of being embarrassed. Invest in a medium toned powder and learn to use bronzer so you always have the look that you are a beautiful cherub. Trying to hide that can make you look silly, so work with it! If you’re the type of person who loves to use their eyes, to look deeply in to people, or to flirt or smile with, definitely play them up. Decorate your flirt with eyeliner, full lashes and shimmer powder. Laugh lines are a very endearing trait. They are the sign of a happy person so don’t try and kill them with fillers until you’re older. Use great night creme and go to sleep with the knowledge that no one can see your laugh lines while your smiling. I have no qualms with plastic surgery, I feel it’s our right to change our bodies, but keep in mind you don’t want to erase what makes you YOU. I am saddened when I see my clients take the light out of their faces, so fill in your face slowly and gently so that your inner beauty continues to have a way to express itself.

CACTUS GRILL Continued From Page 18 These items along with more entree options will be added to the menu during the month of March. “We have an all-around appeal, with something for everyone,” said Linda. “So bring your date, your friends and coworkers, or your kids!” The ambiance at Cactus Grill is laid-back and festive, with colorful lights strung from the ceiling and fun, up-beat music playing. There’s a huge jukebox, arcade games, and a newly installed wine and beer bar. If you are looking for something
decadent to sip on, sample the special Chilean wine selection from La Fuente Winery, which has been named “Class Champion” at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Wine Competition in years past.
If watching the big game is more your style, invite your buddies and cheer on your favorite team on the 115-inch projector screen, or one of the four other televisions located around the restaurant. Patrons can enjoy happy hour from 4 to 8 p.m. with prices like 99-cent margaritas, $1.75 domestics and $2.25 imports, too. Currently in the works, a newly expanded patio is being set up adjacent to the building for those who are interested in dining outdoors during great weather. Cactus Grill’s daily specials include grilled or blackened pork chops, tuna steak, and an 8- or 12-ounce rib-eye. Some must-try menu items include their grilled gourmet burgers, and their super-sized salads. “Customers are always saying ‘Oh my gosh!’ when they see how big our salads are,” Linda commented. The breakfast buffet on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. are also a big hit with customers for just $9.99, and that includes a drink too. There is a large variety to choose from including a fresh fruit bar and an omelet station, where you can pick your ingredients and watch your eggs being cooked right in front of you. If anyone in your family is a pancake fan, bring them in for a special treat like banana or chocolate chip pancakes. They even have sugar-free syrup available. If you are pinching pennies but still want to dine out, senior citizens get a 10 percent discount everyday, and firefighters, EMS, police officers, postal workers, and those in the military all get 25 percent off with proof of ID. So swing by and say hi to Alvin and Linda after your meal, and don’t forget to tell them The SCENE sent you!

Elvis To Perform at U of H – Clear Lake Jesse Aron Featured in Texas Tour By Peggy “Domino” Taylor For all the Elvis fans, “The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” is coming to the University of Houston Clear Lake in the Bayou Center, on March 12. Actually, it will be a good ringer who professionally performs the King’s songs. His name is Jesse Aron and is considered by his peers to be one of the top three Elvis tribute artists in the country. Jesse is an International Champion and two-time Grand Prize Winner of Milwaukee’s Casino Event. He hails from Wisconsin, but Texas has been his home during his “The Voice of Elvis & Legends Texas Tour.” This concert will take the audience musically and visually through the ’50s, ’60s and the Vegas years of Elvis. Hosting the legend tour is Jesse’s new wife, Tarie who is also a professional award-winning impersonator. Tarie will do sets of Marilyn Monroe and Connie Frances. “She is my relief person so I can change costumes, and she is very talented,” says Jesse. Not only does Jessie change the Elvis costumes accordingly with the years on this Texas tour, he also pays tributes to rock legends Ricky Nelson and Roy Orbinson.

“This is my tenth year doing this professionally, but I started impersonating Elvis when I was 4 years old,” Jesse added. “My father and mother had a band in Chicago, and at one point they were looking for a new gimmick.” Jesse was that gimmick, and now he has a large following that swoons over his melodies and gyrations. Jesse Aron – dubbed as “The Voice of Elvis” – has performed across the nation, from Las Vegas to New York and parts of Canada. “There are a lot of Elvis fans down here, and we’re looking forward to giving them something different this time around.” To hear and see why Jesse is known worldwide, visit his website at www.jessearon.com – hearing is believing. The Elvis concert starts at 6 p.m. on March 12 at the Bayou Theater at University of Houston – Clear Lake (2700 Bay Area Blvd.) For tickets, call 281-358-4867, tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. This is one performer who is always ‘taking care of business!’

Wine & Wishes a Huge Success The Bay Area Chi Omega Alumna Chapter recently hosted its Third Annual Wine & Wishes at Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille. The Bay Area Community came out in full force to support Make-AWish Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana Chapter. The atmosphere was energetic with the help of pianist Bob Henschen and vocalist and saxophonist Kelly Dean. Auctioneer Phil Pampolina kept everyone upbeat. Guests were served a five-course wine dinner and enjoyed a live auction, raffle and door prize drawing. Cochairs Holly Perry and Wendy Shaw were proud to announce the presence of parents and grandparents of Abby O, whose wish was granted two years ago through “Wine & Wishes” 2007. This year’s culinary adventure raised more than $51,000 to grant eight children’s wishes from our area. This is $10,000 more than was raised last year. Four of the fulfilled wishes are Jose, 9 years old, to go to Atlantis Resort® in the Bahamas, Ricardo, 13 year old to meet the creator of XBOX®, Ella, 4 years old to go to Walt Disney World Resort®, and Logan, 2-1/2 years old to go to Hawaii. The culmination of fabulous food, wine, and entertainment along with the company of friends in the Bay Area made the evening a huge triumph. This year’s Magnum Sponsors were Joe and Sherry MacKinnon, Visiting Angels Living Assistance Services , Ronald and Carole Krist, Medsafe, Edmonds P.C., Bob and Lena Perry, Perry’s Restaurant Group, Michael Landolt and Ann Wismer-Landolt, Material Service & Supply/ R.T. Masonry, Jack’s Carpet, Houston Pilots, and Sysco Food Service of Houston, Inc.

Cactus Grill:
Bringing South American fare to Clear Lake By CARMEN BATES Home cooking has never tasted so good away from home! If you haven’t checked out Cactus Grill yet, March is the time to do so. Located at 16580 El Camino Real (behind the 24-hour Walgreens), this restaurant welcomed new owners and new interior updates in August of 2008.
Linda and A lvin Saenz charro beans to the fresh-baked cookies are made in the kitchen every day,” Linda said. “I am a chef, so my husband and I are very hands-on when it comes to our menu.
Alvin and Linda Saenz pride themselves on creating all their menu items in-house daily. If you have been craving some green beans and home-style mashed potatoes made from scratch, listen up. “Everything from the
Taking advantage of Alvin’s Nicaraguan roots, they are in the process of adding a much-anticipated South American flair to the already expansive food offerings available at Cactus Grill. After arriving from Puerto Rico – just ten minutes before our scheduled interview time – Linda was full of excitement describing all the wonderful treats she had researched and enjoyed on her trip. Some of the menu items being discussed for the restaurant’s future are gallo pinto, churrascos with chimichurri sauce, tostones and maduros (both different ways to serve fresh plantains) and fried yucca covered in Parmesan cheese. (Yum!) Alvin and Linda really want to bring these flavor-rich South American dishes back to the Clear Lake area so you won’t have to make the long drive into Houston anymore. - Continued on Page 26

From steakhouses like Smith & Wallenski and Outback to up-scale bistros and down-scale pizza joints, these two have done it all. Along with hands-on experience, they hold culinary degrees from the Art Institute of Houston, University of Houston and Texas Tech. The two collaborate on every dish at Vegas Grill. Your Specialty: VARIETY - They enjoy the challenge of a diverse menu and cooking all their dishes from scratch. With a variety of ingredients prepared daily, it’s possible to create something
special at the request of a customer. Signature Dishes: Rubbing, marinating, slowroasting, and then grilling the perfect rib-eye steak. Fusion of flavors from east and west to build an amazing “Phat Elvis Burger.” The Vegas Fry seasoning created in collaboration with Chef Paul Prudhomme from New Orleans. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? From former President George H.W. Bush’s
80th birthday celebration to, most recently, Astros pitcher Brandon Backe. Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: Only use high quality fresh ingredients. You can have the best recipe in the world, but if you skimp on the quality of the ingredients you start with, the end result will not be “amazing.”
