COVER STORY
Hang Loose at Pablo's Pub By CARMEN BATES I recently went to Pablo's Pub, which is located in the Best Buy shopping center at the corner of Bay Area and I-45. Since owners Erich White and Buddy Deese were busy in the kitchen, I sat down with (fictional) mascot, Pablo O'Malley, to find out a little more about the place. Carmen: The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the nice Backyard Bar. Tell me more about that.
Owners Erich White and Buddy Deese enjoying some cold ritas & sizzling fajitas at Pablo’s Pub Carmen: Of course.
Pablo: Well, I really wanted this place to feel like a laidback party environment. As you can see, there is even a short wooden fence dividing the restaurant from the bar area, so you feel like you are sitting in someone's backyard, chilling out and relaxing. Pablo's Pub is extremely kid friendly, so we even fenced in the entire patio area. That way, families can enjoy the great weather outside without having to worry about it being so close to the parking lot. Parents also might be interested to know that kids eat free on Wednesdays.
Pablo: Well, I bet you have never tried it the way we serve it. With over 40 tequilas to choose from, you have got to bring your friends in and have a shot. I won't spoil the surprise, but here is a hint: We don't use a lime for the chaser! Carmen: That does sound enticing! What other kinds of variety can we find on your drink menu? Pablo: If it's variety you want, then this is the place you will find it. We have 12 beers on draft, and over 26 bottled beers for you to try. If margaritas are your thing, we have them frozen and on the rocks, with several different twists, like "The Swirl" (strawberry) or the "Creamsicle Margarita” (orange juice and vanilla ice cream.) If you still can't decide between a beer or rita, we'll mix it up for you. For example, you can order The Belgian Rita, which is a mix of margarita and Blue Moon.
Carmen: I definitely like the impressive surfboard-decor. Was that your idea? Pablo: As you can see, I'm only 4’9”, so I'm not really good at any sports besides surfing; so I've mixed that into the feel of this place. You can even eat at a surfboard-shaped table if you'd like to invite a big group of co-workers after a long hard day. I like to hang loose, and I want others to feel that same relaxed experience when they come here. We have more than 16 HDTVs where we have sports playing all the time, especially UFC and all the sports packages you could ask for. If you enjoy live music, there are live acoustic bands playing on Fridays, inside or outside depending on the weather. Tell me, do you enjoy taking shots of tequila?
Carmen: Sounds intriguing! But how are the prices? Pablo: Rock bottom! We have bar specials Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. which includes $1 house margaritas, $2 wells and domestic beers, plus $3 calls and import beers. We also have daily $2 specials you need to check out Monday through Thursday on drinks and food. Carmen: So Pablo, tell me what inspired you to open a restaurant here in Clear Lake? Pablo: Well, I grew up with a Mexican mom, so she was always cooking fajitas. And my dad was Irish, so he was always drinking beer. One day, I got creative in the kitchen and decided to combine both loves and marinated some fajitas in beer. Genius! They were so excellent, I had to share them with the good people of Clear Lake to try. One bite of beef, chicken or shrimp, and they will be your favorite! All of our food has a Tex-Mex flair. Here, you can be sure to find big portions. - Continued on Page 41

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE
Loose Notes by Andy Eng March was an exciting month as things move outdoors and music hunters had no trouble finding good shows galore. Spring arrived on perhaps the most beautiful day of the month with the Clifton's Spring Music Festival and the Kemah Pan Jam benefit for the Kemah Volunteer Fire Department. We celebrated the reopening of the Zone 504 historical landmark and rocked to the music of After Party. While showers hampered the T-Bone Tom's Music Festival, they answered the punch with the return of the Kemah Jam every Tuesday night. Over on the south side of the beat, music lovers were treated to a touch of class at the Ladies Of The Lake open mic at Heads & Tails. League City's own Myrna Sanders and her Kozmic Pearls have begun finding their way through the area. Gorgeous weather brought out the best of both music and crowds at La Brisa with Silverwing and the Sharks at Mother’s Speakeasy. Over-thetop shows for the month go to Hamilton Loomis at Joel's Ugly Dawg and Vallejo at Scout Bar, both acts recharged our batteries nicely. Spring forward, get out, and linger longer! --------------------------------------------------The Return of the Kemah Jam at T-Bone Tom's - And not a moment too soon. With spring in the air, baseball around the corner and March Madness on the loose, there's no place better these days than being outdoors listening to live music and munching down on the huge patio deck at T-Bone’s. This
month, we caught Undesided (Jeremy Bradshaw guitar/vocals, Adan Coronado bass, Robert Sanchez drums, Maggie Sanchez guest vocalist) taking it up a level. Lady of the Lake Myrna Sanders stopped in for a couple sets and showed off her award winning Kozmic Pearl band (www.kozmicpearl.com) putting the crowd into a vintage frenzy. Expect to see more Myrna this year around the area as she puts forth her bands and collaborations for us to enjoy. St. Patrick’s Day guest host Robin Kirby made her debut performance onto the T-Bone stage this month sharing her captivating songs to an ever expanding Bay Area audience. Best of all, we spotted more than several class musicians in the crowd -- Put this place on your watch list, the best is yet to come...Claudia Hammond at Don Julio's made us swoon. Venue enhancements were spotted at EJ's Sports Bar and Heads -n- Tails. Watch out, April is looking even better, and we

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS: THE FASTEST-GROWING SPORT IN AMERICA
FURIA FIGHT WEAR VENTURES OUT Furia Fight Wear, the popular clothing brand designed by fighters for fighters, recently launched a new online media outlet aimed at assisting the local Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) community. According to Furia Fight Wear cofounder Charles “Chuck” Feigle, the goal of FuriaTV.com is to “give back back to the MMA fans, fighters and gyms.” The site will offer videos on fighters while focusing on their training styles, personalities, gyms and coaches. “The format is fairly simple,” Feigle explained. “Starting in April we will be filming local fighters. We are looking to cover their discipline, training style, dedication in a general ‘get to know segment.’” The guys at Furia are hoping this will Local/Regional Events
allow local fighters to showcase themselves to other fight promotions and help lead to possible sponsors and such. “Our goal is to shoot a new fighter every two weeks,” Feigle explained. “That’s a week to shoot and a week to edit. Houston has the eye of some major networks and we are working with those networks to create the exposure they are looking for. We will also be shooting coaches, gyms and promoters.” Go online to FuriaTV.com to check out the first episode which is dedicated to Furia Fight Wear and offers an inside look at the clothing company.

Much to the displeasure of their wives, The SCENE’s Mixed Martial Arts section is edited by John Ennis, shown at left defending a submission attempt, and Mike Taylor, pictured at right demonstrating a solid chin. Although both are quick to admit they prefer co-ed grappling over exchanging strikes with guys in their weight class, they are committed to providing the Texas coast with the best coverage of both local and international Mixed Martial Arts.

It's the best. Carmen: Very interesting! Are there any other unique food creations at Pablo's Pub for people to try? Pablo: Most certainly! If you are a big fan of chicken fried steak, you have to order ours off the menu, served with spicy jalapeno gravy. Talk about a kick! Back in the kitchen, we like to call it "The Big Dirty." It's a favorite for many of the locals who have already stopped by to try our expansive menu. If you have been to our brother restaurant, Norton’s Pub, we carry the same quality, mouthwatering burgers, but with a different spicy flair like the Mexican green chili and chorizo burger.

TRIBUTE TO CRAFT & HOMEBREWING
B&S Brewers Guild Participates in BIG BREW Same Beer Simultaneously Brewing on Six Continents on May 2nd The celebration of National Homebrew Day, known as BIG BREW, is now in its 12th year, and will be held locally at B&S Brewers Guild on May 2, 2009.
Craft Brewing Statistics The Brewers Association, which tabulates industry growth data for U.S. breweries, announced last month that today's small independent craft brewers are gaining alcohol market share due to a shift toward full flavor beer and increased support for local breweries. From 2007 to 2008, estimated sales by craft brewers were up 5.8 percent by volume and 10.5 percent in dollars. Overall share of the beer category from craft brewers was 4.0 percent of production and 6.3 percent of retail sales. More than 1 million new barrels of beer were sold in 2008, and close to half of those barrels were beer from craft brewers. "2008 was a historic year for beer with the large brewers consolidating and imports losing share, while the top ten selling beer brands dropped in sales. At the same time, small independent craft brewers continued to gain share and attention," said Paul Gatza, Director of the Brewers Association.

Don’t miss out on this entertaining journey that will reveal the truth behind the label of your favorite beer! About Beer Wars: In America, size matters. The bigger you are, the more power you have, especially in the business world. Director Anat Baron takes you on a no holds barred exploration of the U.S. beer industry that ultimately reveals the truth behind the
label of your favorite beer. Told from an insider’s perspective, the film goes behind the scenes of the daily battles and all out wars that dominate one of America’s favorite industries. Beer Wars begins as the corporate behemoths are being challenged by small, independent brewers who are shunning the status quo and creating innovative new beers. The story is told through 2 of these entrepreneurs – Sam and Rhonda – battling the might and tactics of Corporate America. We witness their struggle to achieve their American Dream in an industry dominated by powerful corporations unwilling to cede an inch. This contemporary David and Goliath story is ultimately about keeping your integrity (and your family’s home) in the face of temptation. Beer Wars is a revealing and entertaining journey that provides unexpected and surprising turns and promises to change the world’s opinion on those infamous 99 bottles of beer on the wall.

LOOSE NOTES Cont. From Page 46 An over the top award goes to Scout Bar this month and Vallejo hailing from Austin. and his mighty band (Kit Bailey on bass, Levi on the drums, and Stratton Doyle on sax) put forth to his army of loyal fans what we needed, a massive dose of funk, rock, rhythm and blues the entire night. We scored a couple of Hamilton's CDs including "Ain't Just Temporary" which included an appearance by Bo Didley himself -- His last ever recording session before passing away. If you missed this show, it'll be a while before you may be able to catch Hamilton again as he heads off for a spring tour of Europe. But you can betcha he'll be back, and so will we! ---------------------------------------------------

LOOSE NOTES • ContInued From Page 37 Last month we caught Tom and acoustic master Mark Zeus on the stage and enjoyed an entertaining show, great food from the Heads & Tails kitchen, and warm company with the locals at this Clear Lake Shores hangout. The big surprise of the month came at their Tuesday's Open Mic night featuring the "Ladies of the Lake". Hosted by Robin Kirby,
individual and group collaborations warmed the entire night with appearances by Season Ammons (Nashville recording artist), Susan Turner (steel drum percussionist), Marie Angel (sultry bluesy jazz recording artist), the return of long missed Gail Bixler from her temporary music scene hiatus, Bobbie EmersonRevak (ever rocking sister of the universe), dynamo Torree Montgomery (country, jazz and rock vocalist), and the first time local appearance from the classiest Myrna Sanders. Supported with a little help from their boys, these Ladies graced diners and music lovers the entire night.
Music lovers were treated with beautiful weather and a full day of great music at Clifton's Spring Music Festival. Hosted by the gracious staff at Clifton's and produced by Steve & Bobbie Revak (who were taught by the great Jim Shortt himself), the Festival featured new bands in the Galveston Bay area: End Game, Robin Kirby, Celeste Terrell, Brandon Thomas, Otis Futhermucker, Lost Together, Larry Sepulvado & Sin City, 10 String Stro-Kings, Wood 'n Wind, Cymblem, Zach Tate Band, and the Snake Charmers. If you get out and read the historical land marker near the water, you'll read that the place has loooong been a Galveston Bay musical gathering spot. The tradition continues -- Play on!

Free Ur Feet also offers a great selection of boat shoe brands Sperry and Sebago. Free Ur Feet is planning lots of inventory expansion on the horizon. With new seasonal styles (including sandals) arriving regularly, they encourage clients to come in often to check out new selections. “We try and stock a few things for everyone. Off the top of my head, I don’t even know how many styles I have. There are too many here, and many more coming,” Mark said. “We do have the ability to special order items weekly.” Currently, Cobians are the best sellers at Free Ur Feet. “Mostly because they are soft right off the rack,” Mark said. “We have a large selection and the price is right.” The Sanuk shoes, he said, are right on their tail. Sanuk sidewalk surfers are designed to feel like flip-flops, but you can wear them all year ’round because they are covered to look like regular shoes. Mark explained, “They are non-constricting and ‘free’ your feet, which allows you to walk naturally as if barefooted. They are pretty cool and very popular with guys and gals.” Sanuk is the Thai word for happiness and balance, so what a perfect way to find a pair of shoes that can offer that kind of comfort. “Once the weather stays nice, Sperry – I am sure – will be hard to keep on the shelves once folks know we carry them.” He explained that both Sebago and Sperry are both well-established international boat shoe brands that stay in high demand worldwide. Olukai is a premier sandal with a form-fitting sole that is more like a high-end shoe. Mark said, “They mold to your foot after a week or so and fit your foot like a glove.” So, who’s the ideal client for Free Ur Feet? “Anyone who wants comfortable sandals or shoes,” Mark said. “Our goal is to provide our patrons with footwear that makes their feet feel good so they feel happy while walking, playing or relaxing on and off the water.” Free Ur Feet also carries Anon sunglasses that make a fashion statement, and for serious water lovers (boaters, fishermen, etc.), they carry Costa del Mar high-quality shades. Tell your friends and make plans to check Free Ur Feet out this week, if you haven’t already stopped by. Sole Searching? Free Your Feet! By BETSEY ENNIS Are your little toes sick and tired of being confined? Fear no more. There's a new shop in Seabrook that has your answer. Conveniently located at the corner of Hwy. 146 and Second Street, Free Ur Feet offers an abundance of specialty namebrand casual shoes with one thing in common: Comfort. This locally owned store stocks a variety of inventory ranging from $16 flip-flops to $110 high-end
leather, laser-etched sandals. League City residents Mark and Julie Miller are excited about opening this specialty store in Clear Lake and want to spread the word. So, aside from hassle free, front-row parking, why should one stop by? The Millers are committed to customer service and affordable prices. “What we don’t do is pad our prices beyond the MSRP,” Mark said. That is always good to hear when it comes to shoe shopping.
Although they are still relatively new, their stock of shoes is already plush. Free Ur Feet offers various popular names in non-confining footwear including flipflops and sandals such as Reef, Cobian, Sanuk, Quicksilver, Rainbow, Teva, Pirate and Hurley; as well as the high-end, premium sandals brand Olukai (a conforming shoe in a sandal body) whose non-marking soles fit in with everyday activities and are ideal for boating. - Continued on Page 33

FRANCA’S Continnued From Page 18 Upon arrival, customers of all ages are greeted like they are family. First timers to the restaurant are treated to the “tour de Franca,” where patrons learn the rich history of the Pignataro family. The restaurant is decorated in true Italian style, including concrete pillars, hand painted murals, and fountains made by Franco himself. After dinner, it’s the youngest customers who receive ice cream sundaes, courtesy of Franca. You will likely feel a part of this family by the time you leave. Longtime customers Russel and Susan Treat agreed, “We’ve been coming here since 1973 because the service is wonderful, but the family and the food are superb!” Because the restaurant chronicles the history of family – from photographs and memorabilia, to a village with a fully operational train – what better place to celebrate family events? Franca’s banquet room is easily set up for rehearsal dinners, graduation parties, sports team celebrations, or even weddings. The room usage is free of charge. Franca’s can also cater spring celebrations. Call 281488-2207 for details and reservations. The menu boasts a variety of one-of-a-kind dishes created especially for the customers of Franca’s. “The key here is fresh ingredients. Everything is made from scratch,” explained Franca. Weekday lunch specials are offered Tuesday through Thursday for $5.95. These include fresh homemade garlic bread with each serving. Pollo Franca is a popular item on the menu. It features a chicken breast with spinach, mozzarella, and mushrooms, served in a Marsala cream sauce. While another favorite, Pasta del Giorgio, combines baby shrimp with sauteed spinach, sundried tomatoes, and fresh garlic served in a lemon butter sauce over angel hair pasta. Both are served with a house salad and homemade garlic bread. The restaurant has a full service bar and a knowledgeable and experienced staff

to help with wine and beverage selections. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, this spring Cafe 21 Theatre will bring the production of “The Nerd” to Franca’s. Performances will begin May 16, and run through June 6. The cost for this event is $30 plus tax. For details, menu items, other show listings, auditions, as well as reservations, visit www.cafe21theatre.com. Franca’s is located at 1101 E. Nasa Road 1, and business hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Stop by for a taste of Italiano. Be sure to order a glass of wine with your meal, because according to Franco, “A meal without wine is like a kiss without love.” Salute! Tell them the SCENE sent you! --------------------------

Also, learn how to collect your poetry, stories, or other writings as a gift to yourself, family, friends and our community. “Bay Area Houston’s story of stories should include yours, and University of Houston - Clear Lake is interested, too. Between the 50th anniversary of NASA and the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing, we pause with you to reflect on the stories of the people and organizations who made this community the great place that it is,” stated Dion McInnis. He added, “Engineers, employees and retirees, community leaders and volunteers from then and now, please experience this workshop and consider contributing your story relating to Bay Area Houston to the university’s archives.”

These can be stocked up on at the dollar store and really make your closet look unified. 5. Use great containers. SHOP YOUR CLOSET! Today’s economic situation is forcing some of us to take a step back and analyze our priorities. We are buying fewer frivolous items and honing in on what we really need. Though fashions on the runway this season were mild, we still feel the need to feel fresh, and to not FEEL like we are holding back. I know that at home I have heaps and heaps of clothing, but yet I am always wanting something new. So, I decided to take stock of what I have and make the effort to be creative with it. Right now is a great time to be simple, analyze what we have and appreciate it. Dust off those neglected items and bring them back to life! I wanted to make my closet look like a chic boutique, organized by colors and styles with an effortless warmth.

My closet had become in complete disarray. It was filled to the brim with things that didn’t belong. Sports equipment, memorabilia and an overabundance of things I didn’t want or need. I was lost, so I called in the professionals. Yes! There are some wonderful souls out there devoted to giving us the push we need to get our closets beautified and accessible. Lisa Tyring of Just Organization, Baby says, “Your closet is a place you enter within the first hour of starting your day. By having this ‘secret place’ organized, it creates a huge impact on your day and in many other areas of your life.” She helped me to see that by rearranging and streamlining my clothing, accessories and shoes I can create multitudes of new outfits and bring forgotten items to the forefront. I had forgotten how nice some of my handbags were and that I actually did have some beautiful scarves and sunglasses. Together, we went through everything – keeping, tossing and donating or reselling. I got rid of things I would never wear again and was able to create space in my closet I didn’t know I had. Before, there were shoes piled on top of each other, pairs scrambled in disharmony. Lisa effortlessly created room for a rack and even got my husband to do his share in tossing his old t-shirts. It was like a hurricane blew threw for a few hours, but the calm after the storm brought accessibility and a renewed vigor for a place that I thought was gone forever! Everything was color coded and neatly hung and Lisa gently rearranged things so that they resembled buffet line: First, slip-on pants, then shirts, a belt or scarf if needed; slip on shoes, and grab a pair of shades and a handbag on the way out! By utilizing this system I was able to make use of accessories better and piece together outfits I had never worn.

The University of Houston at Clear Lake will host the V.A.S.E. competition and exhibit April 18th through May 5 , 2009. The state level art competition will be April 18th at U of H-Clear Lake.
V.A.S.E., a statewide curriculum, is an opportunity for exemplary high school art students. The Texas Art Education Association, T.A.E.A., is the organizational sponsor whose membership is comprised of professional art educators, museum art educators, college professors and art administrators. University of Houston – Clear Lake President, William A. Staples stated, “The V.A.S.E. program is the largest high school art competition in Texas and the only one of its kind in the nation. “Art is critical to everyone’s development,” states Dion McInnis, U of H – Clear Lake Associate Vice President of University Advancement. He added, “V.A.S.E. promotes and celebrates the artist, the one who dares to reveal themselves to us through their expression, and for that, we at U.H.C.L. honor their work.” schools from around the nation who attend the event to provide portfolio critiques and recruit students.” The students of V.A.S.E. represent the top high school artists in the Texas schools and for nine years they have gathered at U of H – Clear Lake for this pre-professional event. V.A.S.E. exposes the students to careers in the visual arts and measures their talents against the standard of excellence. The students learn from international artists who teach about genres developed in other parts of the world. For many of the students, V.A.S.E. may be the first time they have visited a college campus. For each student attending V.A.S.E., the university aims to foster hope and build belief that the dream of college education can become a reality. The State V.A.S.E. Director is Joey Doyle. Joey has also organized numerous workshops and seminars, some including pottery demos, ceramics, watercolors and street art demos. His enthusiastic work on V.A.S.E is year-round. The trip to State V.A.S.E. begins months earlier in 20 Texas regions where students artwork is evaluated in the area of concept, technique, craftsmanship and creativity. Students who receive the highest ratings at the regional events advance to State V.A.S.E. Jurors determine the top art works and recognize them with State V.A.S.E. medallions representing a superior

Franca’s Real Italian Restaurant
Celebration of Family & Tradition By SHANNON MILLER
Pignataro.
Whether going out for a quiet dinner for two, or looking for a place to take the whole family, Franca’s Real Italian Restaurant is a Clear Lake landmark worth rediscovering. Since 1971, this familyowned restaurant (originally known as Franco’s) has been serving authentic Italian food to the Bay Area. “When we first opened, you could see our sign from Highway 3,” said founder Franco
Although the Clear Lake area has seen many changes over the last 30 years, including a slight name change to this restaurant, one thing about Franca’s has remained the same – the sense of family. When Franco first opened, he was closely followed by Franca, his youngest of three daughters and now-owner of the restaurant. “I was the boss when I was five,” Franca recalled. “I would follow my dad around with keys just like his, and everyone would greet me just like they did my dad.” The lifelong father/daughter bond has been the driving force and longevity of the success of such a gracious family. - Continued on Page 27

ESCAPE TO VEGAS WITHOUT LEAVING CLEAR LAKE By CARMEN BATES
showing it here,” added Miller. What could be better than all this? I haven’t even mentioned the impressive food offerings.
Wanna go to Vegas? Skip the plane tickets and gambling losses and win big at Vegas Grill instead.
When you can’t decide on Mexican, American, Italian or Asian, Vegas Grill is the perfect place to eat because they have a little bit of everything. If you have not tried their delicious American SlowRoasted Ribeyes, you are in for a treat. With chefs Zack and Javier working in
Vegas Grill is new to Clear Lake, and it is nothing like this area has seen before. “Think ‘Las Vegas casino meets fun and affordable restaurant,’” said owner Steve Miller, and that’s what you’ll find at 20931 Gulf Freeway in Webster. Since opening their doors on 08/08/08, Miller and local product and frontof-the-house manager Jeff Schurwon have been inviting patrons to escape to what seems like a fun-filled Vegas getaway. Combining a mix of flirty entertainment, mouth-watering food and tasty drinks, Vegas Grill is the perfect place to head out for a night on the town.
Amazing Food, Memorabl e Serv
the kitchen, you will indulge in recipes that can only be found inside these four walls. The intricate process in which they marinate and slow-roast their steaks is incredible. "We take extra effort to make it amazing," says Chef Javier (who is also known as "the food guy.") First, they hand rub their specialty seasonings and let the meat marinate overnight. The following day, the steaks are slow-roasted for hours, then carved and pan seared in butter to seal in the flavor. Yum! Other must-try items include their fries, which they take very seriously at Vegas Grill. Their signature Vegas Grill Fry Seasoning was developed by Chef Paul Prudhomme of New Orleans exclusively for this location. To top it off, they load them with cheese, sliced green onions, chopped fresh bacon and jalapenos, all for less than $5. If you’re looking for a bigger taste of Vegas, order the half-pound Original Phat Elvis Burger, that is sure to make you sing their praises!
No, there is no gambling, but you could have fooled me by the authentic-looking slot machines greeting patrons at the front entrance. Step into the main dining area, and take in the awe-inspiring panoramic “window” of the Las Vegas strip at night. In the center of the room, it is impossible to miss the enormous U-shaped bar, and tall, cozy booths and pseudo-black jack tables surrounding the bottom-level of the restaurant welcoming a fun night out with your friends, or an upscale date-night for couples. Looking for the next guys’ night out? “This is not your neighborhood Chili’s or TGI Friday’s,” said Miller. “It’s an experience!” Boasting numerous huge HDTVs, and two jumbo projector screens, it is unlikely you will miss out on any sporting events. “If there is a game on TV, then we are probably
