Tracii Guns to play Heads -N- Tails Former Guns N’ Roses & L.A. Guns guitarist to hit Kemah for Special Event on May 28 Tracii Guns, one of the most popular hard rock guitarists of the 1980s and 1990s, is coming to town this month for a “special event” at Heads -N- Tails in Kemah. Guns, whose real name is Tracii Ulrich, is best known for playing with some of the most popular rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s including Guns N’ Roses, Brides of Destruction, L.A. Guns, Killing Machine and a one-jam session run with Quiet Riot.
Mean Gene Kelton Sunday, May 10 MOTHER’S SPEAKEASY
In 1985, Guns formed Guns N’ Roses with Axle Rose, but left the group after a short run to form L.A. Guns. Since then, Guns teamed up with Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue to form Brides of Destruction and quit Quiet Riot after one jam session to start the Tracii Guns Band which eventually changed the name to L.A. Guns, despite the fact there was another lineup of musicians using the same name. According to published reports, Guns recently hired reality show Rockstar: INXS product Marty Casey, and together they are rumored to release a new album by the end of the year.

COVER STORY
Pizza and beer has never tasted so good By CARMEN BATES
lasagna and chicken Alfredo, all made from scratch. If you come to Al Capone’s for one thing, though, it is definitely the pizza. You can order a 12- or 16-inch “pie” and prices range from as low as $14 for a Hawaiian pizza to $24 for their Secret Vault Pizza. This creative pizza is impressive! Made with pepperoni, salami, onions, peppers, olives, tomatoes, pineapple, Canadian bacon, mushrooms, jalapenos, garlic, and Greek peppers (also known as peppercinis), it’s sure to make an impression.
If you haven’t been into Al Capone’s recently, you are missing out on all their new changes! Located at the corner of West Bay Area Blvd. and Fife Lane, you’ll find an enormous slice of pizza welcoming you in to Al Capone’s Pizza Pub. New owner Rena Head took over two months ago, and has incorporated many changes to make it her own, including a full bar, a totally new menu and plenty of events as well.
There is always something new being created in the kitchen, just ask your server or the chef what off-menu items are available that day. Rena has many plans for continued growth and expansion including adding a bakery which will offer homemade breads, Italian desserts, and more.
Al Capone’s offers a full bar for patrons to enjoy, including a Jagermeister machine which keeps the Jager cold and “on tap.” Bar manager Stephen Blackmon suggested that all beer enthusiasts come by and try their beer selection, including Birra-morreti, an Italian beer offered at Al Capone’s. “Our drink prices are always reasonable,” Stephen said, “especially during our happy hours which we have during all Astros and Rockets games.” There are five TVs in the bar area, and of course, pitchers of beer are available to enjoy with your pizza or hot wings. If you are craving a sweet “girly” drink, ask the bartenders to serve you their specialty, and they will create a unique drink or shot. The staff told me when the dinner crowd winds down around 9 p.m., there is an atmosphere change and the customers relax and just have fun. If you love listening to the saxaphone, Capone’s has a player who comes in several nights a week to play for the bar crowd. There is karaoke almost every night, and – the staff swears – it is almost always pleasant to listen to.
Al Capone’s is ready and willing to deliver. Anytime the restaurant is open (11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day) you can get their full menu delivered straight to your office or home within a five-mile radius. Check out their new menu online at www.alcaponespizzapub.com before you come by or call in your order. If you are not sure if you are within five miles, just call and ask. Big events are Al Capone’s specialty. Call Al Capone’s to cater your event. “We can cater any event off-site no matter how big or small,” said Chef Christopher. On-site, they can host an event of up to 120 people on-site. On Saturday, May 9, make sure to join the crew at Al Capone’s for a Crawfish Boil and Parking Lot Party. They will have a drink station set up outside and plenty of hot and spicy crawfish on hand. Festivities start at noon and last all day, with more events to come this summer and fall (stayed tuned to The SCENE for details.)
If your tummy is growling, check out Al Capone’s total menu make-over! Legendary Galveston Chef Luigi Ferre (of Luigi’s fame) was brought in as the menu consultant as he awaits the re-opening of his own restaurant post-Ike. Although Al Capone’s does offer an after-hours bar food menu, Head Chef Christopher Pierce said he is very proud of the many authentic Italian dishes offered on their extensive restaurant menu.
Make sure you stop by this month to toast their new beginnings and try their fantastic new menu, and don’t forget to tell them The SCENE sent you!
“We make everything fresh daily – the bread, the delicious sauces, and the desserts like Tiramisu.” Some of their signature menu items include cannelloni,

Loose Notes by Andy Eng The March live music scene was so much fun, we decided to do even more in April spending most of our time at outdoor music venues. Judging by the turnouts everywhere we went, so were many of you. Don't worry, we did manage to stop in a few of the indoor places but heck, the weather was (mostly) great this month, right? The SCENE outdoor music corridor runs primarily north to south along state highway 146. Starting in the Kemah Lighthouse District is the cluster of Zone 504, the Monkey Bar, Palapas and bell weather talent hangout, T-Bone Tom's, all offering a plethora of outdoor music throughout the entire week, and all within comfortable walking distances from each other. Take a short trip on 2094 to Heads -N- Tails and enjoy their brand new palapa patio where we caught the twoday Smoke on the Bayou music festival and their Sunday dinner hour Singer Songwriters night hosted by Tom Rogers. Further south, we enjoyed several music sets on sunny afternoons with the Sunday weekend riders at Mother’s Speakeasy, then we got hungry and stopped in for Mexican food and outdoor music La Brisa. The outdoor music corridor takes a jog over toward nirvana and Clifton's Seaside Diner, where they've lined up a full seasonal music line-up to go along with their great food on Galveston Bay. Head south down Lakeshore Drive and you can catch outdoor music acts throughout the week at the Green Parrot. Patience will be a virtue for music lovers while the folks at Top Water Grill are The Snake Charmers at Clifton’s Seaside Diner well into

Tuesday Open Mic Night at Joel’s Ugly Dawg their reconstruction. New event alert! The perennial Jim Shortt favorite hangout, Cockeyed Seagull, is taking music outdoors to the patio on Sundays starting at 3 p.m. for all of you with early Monday morning jobs. This event will be hosted by the ever-entertaining Kevin Fenton and already is marked on my calendar as a stop for the months ahead. April was a great outdoor music month! ‘Tis time to linger longer! ---------------------------------------------------
One thing you often hear visiting with the bands is that many of them buy gear at Danny's Guitar Hacienda in League City. So it was no surprise when we stopped in for their 27th Anniversary parking lot party, we saw so MANY of the area guitar players hanging out and entertaining with Danny's own band, Cold Feet. Originating in and playing around the area for over 30 years, these gentlemen (Danny on bass, Donny McCorquodale and David Hargrove on guitars, and Jack Horn on drums) still play a mean lick. Rock on! - Continued on Page 35

SMOKE ON THE BAYOU A SUCCESS! In April, the Galveston Bay Area Musicians Alliance (GBAMA) in partnership with the Musicians Benevolent Society of Houston (MBS) and Heads-N-Tails Bar & Grill hosted a Spring Music Festival and fundraiser to assist musicians who lost their equipment in Hurricane Ike. The lot was filled with booths, clowns, moonwalks, BBQ, crawfish and a live entertainment stage featuring local artists performing at the third Ikefest –this event was dubbed “Smoke on the Bayou.” SCENE live music photographer Andy Eng and I waited around the outside of the tour bus to interview Miss Paula Nelson, daughter of famed Willie. GBAMA started their pursuit of Paula back when they asked if she would consider playing at the first Ikefest. Perseverance of the GBAMA organizers prevailed for this event. Finally, her road manager Logan opened the door, smiled and asked us, “Are you ready?” “You bettcha,” we said and into the bus we went. Paula welcomed us with and a hug while Logan served us beverages and Paula a hot tea. - Continued on Page 36

SMOKE ON THE BAYOU • Cont. From Page 39 Raggio continued, “We also want to extend a special thanks to Erik Miller and the outstanding staff at Heads-n-Tails for hosting ‘Smoke On the Bayou.’” In April, Heads-N-Tails debuted their new palapa patio and game room. They provided a fantastic live music venue complete with an outside stage and a new inside stage. Hunger was satisfied with boiled crawfish on the patio and an 18 wheeler semi truck cooker serving barbecue. The kids enjoyed moon walks, balloons and face painting. The success of any fundraiser heavily depends on the volunteer work force. Fortunately for GBAMA, the volunteers came out in force and supported this event to ensure its success. Raggio applauded the hard work and commitment of Pat Beadles, Papa Blu3z, Kim and Mike Brennan, Heather Brown, Rob Carroll, Andy Eng, Karen & Paula Nelson • Cont. From Page 39 As Andy took pictures, I interviewed this petite, blonde bombshell. She answered with the sweetest demeanor. Toree: Paula, do you have anything you would like to say about your new CD? Paula: Well, I have a new guitarist, Landis Armstrong; he is phenomenal, putting a new twist to my new songs. Also, I am wiser now about my music. Mark Epstein is my bass player, and Kevin Remme is my drummer. They are so great together. Toree: What knowledge and wisdom has your dad taught you about the industry? Paula: He told me to watch everything I do, but do the exact opposite! He would give you the shirt off his back. Toree: Is this Willie’s original bus? Paula: Yes. The woodwork is 25 years old. Toree: Do you accept material from other songwriters? Paula: I write my own songs! Toree: Where do you usually record? Paula: Ray Benson’s and Bruce Robison’s studios.

Joe Hamilton, Niesje Humphrey, Layla Howard, Chad & Kevin Kershner, Karen Raggio, Cisco Ruiz, Gracie Rodriguez, Susan Stuart, Jim Tacl and Kim and Keeley Wiess. Sponsors for this event included Bay Area Moon Walks, Dimensions In Design, HeadsN-Tails Bar & Grill, kemahcitylimits.com, KILTFM, Music News Magazine, Nitelife Entertainment, Performance Sound & Light and The SCENE Magazine. Raggio said, “Thank you to all our sponsors and attendees for your commitment and support of the Galveston Bay Area music scene.” Mark your calendars for the next IkeFest to be held Sunday September 13, on the anniversary of Hurricane Ike. The next event will also be held at Heads-N-Tails and will feature bands from Galveston and neighboring communities. Stay tuned to the SCENE for details!
Toree: What is your sign? Paula: Scorpio. October 27
Paula: Yes. I like to stay home and be with my three dogs, two cats and my turtle “Lil Bit.”
Toree: What would you like to say to fellow singer/songwriters to get ahead in the industry?
Toree: Do you exercise? Do you like to walk?
Paula: You have got to have a sense of humor and learn to laugh at yourself!
Paula: The band calls me a Pistol on the bus. Come let me show you my punching ball! This keeps me sane! Also I am a black belt.
She then told us a story about singing the National Anthem at a wrestling match. It was one of the most difficult challenges she’d ever had to overcome. She managed to start the song in too-high of a key and, well, it just did not go well. She recalled, “Someone in the stadium yelled out, ‘Paula, you suck!’ But I just kept on going, then I heard people booing, and I thought I really sounded bad. But then I realized the people were booing at the guy who said I sucked... I just got through it!” Toree: Do you like golf? Paula: I like golf carts. My dad would always have his friends over on his course, and I loved driving around in the carts. (Laughing.) Toree: What is your pet peeve? Paula: People who are condescending and rude to others. Toree: Are you a homebody when you are not on the road?

Andy and I looked at each other in amazement. Wow! Then she led us to her bedroom, and there it was: a punching ball. With a big smile on her face, she proceeded to punch away. We laughed, cut up and high-fived then went back to our chat while Andy continued checking out the rest of the infamous tour bus. Toree: What have you learned by touring in the music business? Paula: Pack less! Toree: What is your ideal vacation? Paula: Being home. Toree: Are you single or married? Paula: I have a love interest. Toree: As a female musician, what is the most important advice you can give to your fellow female artists? Paula: Don’t take any crap from anyone! It was such a delightful experience, but as the say, the show must go on, and it was time for Paula and the band to do just that. What a night!

LOOSE NOTES Cont. From Page 42 We took in two notable shows under the new Heads and Tails palapa patio this past month -- The Sunday Singer Songwriter's Night where host Tom Rogers invited up local recording artists Randy Meadows, Gary Williams, Merry Agape, and Tonya Courey. Early in the month, we enjoyed a very special evening of entertainment with Chuck Pyle and the story behind the songs at Kelly McGuire's Up Close and Personal show (www.redfishisland.com). Chuck is known in the circles as the “Zen Songwriter” and his songs have been recorded by the likes of John Denver, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Suzy Bogguss, and Jerry Jeff Walker. Kelly's shows remind Up Close and me of the early Personal Austin City Limits sessions but with a nicer touch of class. Seating is kept at a limit so keep up if you want in!

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS: THE FASTEST-GROWING SPORT IN AMERICA
THE URBAN RUMBLE IV Saturday, May 23 • Pasadena Convention Center Cage Fighting returns to Pasadena this month as the Urban Rumble Championships (URC) is set for it’s fourth promotion and second since dropping boxing from the card and trading the ring for a cage.
against a highly regarded Kamal Shalorus last month at the King of Kombat in Austin.
The Urban Rumble IV has a lot to live up to as Urban Rumble III was full of non-stop action and demonstrated that the skill set of Houston-area mixed martial artists is not to be taken lightly. Urban Rumble IV will feature 10 bouts including a Cruiser Weight Championship fight pitting Mike Bronzoulis (8-1-1) against Cleburn Walker (6-1). Bronzoulis is coming off a tough fight Local/Regional Events
The fight was to be for the 170-pound title. But Bronzoulis, who took the fight on little notice, was unable to make weight, weighing in at 171.5 pounds. The fight, which was described as the fight of the night if not the year, went back a forth and ended in a majority draw (28-28, 29-27 Bronzoulis, and 28-28) much to the displeasure of everyone including Bronzoulis who admitted in a post fight interview that he knows better than to let the judges determine the winner. Come out on May 23 and see a fired up Bronzoulis go after a URC Belt after letting a King of Kombat belt get away.

Much to the displeasure of their wives, The SCENE’s Mixed Martial Arts section is edited by John Ennis, shown at left defending a submission attempt, and Mike Taylor, pictured at right demonstrating a solid chin. Although both are quick to admit they prefer co-ed grappling over exchanging strikes with guys in their weight class, they are committed to providing the Texas coast with the best coverage of both local and international Mixed Martial Arts.

Georges St. Pierre
In a sign of protest of the less than exciting victories Anderson SIlva has racked up in his last two fights where he was almost unwilling to engage and push the action, we have flip-flopped Silva and Georges St. Pierre, making the French Canadian our new top pound-for-pound fighter. We still love Silva, so consider this our contribution to the hype surrounding rumors of an eventual catch-weight fight between the two fighters. Recent rumors also have Silva requesting a fight with Fedor Emelianenko, if the UFC can ever get him under contract. Expect more movement to the list in upcoming months as we soon will be treated to two fights with pound-for-pound fighters matching up against each other. First, light heavyweights Rashard Evans (#5) and Lyoto Machida (#6) match up this month (May 23) in a title fight at UFC 98. Early next month, Urijah Faber (#9) gets a rematch and chance to win back his title against Mike Brown (#8) at WEC 41.

BEAUTY SHOW From Page 24 The V.I.P evening consisted of a huge eventboasting about 2,000 attendees in the beautiful ball room at The Palmer House. The evening hosted performances from the major hair care companies of today including Joico, Aquage, and TIGI who had amaz-
ing models sporting the latest in trends as well as avant garde hair work. My favorite – and the most unique – was Ann Bray’s collection with Aquage. Models paraded her finely woven hair work that looked like giant headresses made of spider webs. The collection was months in the making and really made a bang at this event. Trends of 2009 varied widely from company to company, but some of the common threads were braiding, discon-
nected haircuts and bangs. Braids woven throughout the surface of the hair and soft piecey texture were popular at Aquage while TIGI rocked the spikey, rocker multi color dos. Make-up is BACK. Color was seen everywhere and included really wild applications reminiscent of the ’80s glamrock style. Geometric hairstyles are coming back into season, matched with short bangs and curling iron texture. Dust off those curling irons and hot rollers and get ready for summer with flowing, organic texture!

ROCK YOUR SUMMER
America’s Premiere Beauty Show “ABS” made its way to Chicago on March 28 - 30 this year to exhibit thousands of new beauty products, new techniques, styles and trends in the beauty industry. As any type of beauty professional, this is the event not to be missed! Every hair and beauty vendor in the nation has a booth at this event so it draws about 60-70,000 beauty professionals each year. Stylists can expect glitz, glam and pizzazz while they shop, frequent workshops and attend posh V.I.P. events.

One of the big draws to attending the extravaganza is meeting celebrities in the hair industry and learning their techniques. This year’s big-wigs included Nick Arrojo from What Not to Wear, Kim Vo (celebrity stylist and regular on Shear Genius), Kim Kimble (stylist to Beyonce), John Paul DeJoria, Angus Mitchell and Robert Cromeans of Paul Mitchell Systems, Luis Alvarez (noted photographer and co-founder of Aquage hair care products) and many, many more with extensive resumes in fashion, movies, TV and video. Many of the reality stars from Shear Genius were on board to draw in crowds and available for photo opportunities. The casting agents of Shear Genius were in McCormick Place auditioning hundreds of hopefuls for the third season of the reality hit. Stylists stood in line to film a 10-minute video doing a hair cut and showing off their personality. Chicago was all a-buzz with wired and inspired industry professionals!

ECO-ART AND ECO-TOURS RESULT IN ADVENTURE E
ARTS
SC
EN
By Peggy “Domino” Taylor On the heels of Earth Day, one group deems spotlighting because of their eco blend of art and adventure. Discover the wonders of Galveston Bay and enrich the artistic side with Artist Boat, a non-profit group that combines Eco-Art with Eco-Tours that result in kayak adventures. Whether shooting a prize-winning photo, sketching a flock of birds or painting a coastline picture, all are a common goal to the nature-loving participant.
grass beds, oyster reefs, rookery islands, and cypress sloughs. The “water road” of the Galveston Bay watershed hosts a myriad of bird and fish species that change with the seasons, the tides and time of the day. This additionally allows an opportunity for a spectacular piece of art.
Artist Boat provides guided interpretive tours to places of natural significance on Galveston Bay and on Galveston Island via kayak. Their mission is integrating the arts and sciences for exploration and appreciation of coastal habitants. Artist Boat’s staff of certified kayak instructors lead the tours to great places, identify and show native species, teach water coloring techniques, assist one another with kayak paddling skills, and interpret natural processes. Since Galveston Bay and Galveston Island are rich in historical and natural history, it makes a perfect “day vacation” for families. It’s also an exploration of natural wonders for groups or an adventure for the water sport enthusiasts. The tours offer nine paddling destina-
tions within a 10 to 90 minute drive from Galveston. Destinations include Armand Bayou Coastal Preserve, Clear Creek, Cypress Swamps, Smith Point, Drum Bay, Christmas Bay Coastal Preserve, Galveston, Galveston Island State Park, and East Beach Lagoon. Galveston Bay sustained Jean Lafitte’s men, Karankawa Indians and now many Texans with the fish, shrimp, crabs and oysters. The premier access allows the group to explore the estuary’s waters, where the rivers and bayous of southeast Texas meet the sea. Artist Boat has a calendar of events for spring, summer and fall. The explorations are scenic among the marshes, sea-
Programs are available for private and publics schools as well as universities and non-profit groups. Private trips are also available. No experience is necessary, so beginners have no reason to be shy. The Artist Boat is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and preservation of coastal margins and the marine environment through the disciplines of the sciences and the arts. Formed in 2003 the organization is an all volunteer staff and board. The public program is sponsored by the City of Galveston and the Galveston Bay Estuary Program. Tickets for the eco-tours start at $20. Reservations are required, call or refer to their website. This year’s event was memorable and unique in many ways. First, many of the talented Seabrook-area residents who have volunteered their time to help run the event in recent years were unable to help out this year due to the devastation left by Hurricane Ike which continues to affect the lives

of many Seabrook residents today, many months later. But members of the Seabrook Police Officers Association, which the event benefits, and new volunteers stepped in and decided the show must go on! Not even the loss of power at the yacht club and much of Seabrook during the event could dampen spirits as Police Chief Nona F. Holomon was honored for her 30 years of service to the City of Seabrook. Congratulations to Chief Holomon and all who participated.

Bay Area Blvd.) • 281-482-8100 What’s your Background/Experience: Luigi is one of the finest classical Italian chefs anywhere and has made Luigi’s in Galveston into a national landmark in 12 short years. He has graciously imparted his unlimited skills and wisdom to the staff at Al Capone’s while his restaurant is being rebuilt following Hurricane Ike. Christopher, the great grandson of depression-era Presto Cafe owner Demitri Boozilas, has just recently returned to Texas from his travels abroad where he eagerly worked, learned and absorbed the knowledge and style of several master chefs. Your Specialty: Our specialties include classical Italian dishes and homemade hand-tossed pizza. But, with our unlimited flexibility and creativity, we are a neighborhood pub with intercontinental aspirations.
Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? From astronauts to archbishops, rocks stars or sports heroes to local celebrities, we have and will continue to serve them all with the same love and care we give our regular guests, neighbors and family. Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: Cooking for others or even just yourself should always be a labor of love. Take pleasure in it.

Lunch specials are also available Monday through Friday starting at $4.99, and you have more than 30 different options to choose from. Your kids will love Las Haciendas too, especially because they can have a free ice cream cone for dessert.
I recently visited the "original" Las Haciendas location on their seventh anniversary, and boy, do they know how to celebrate! Surrounded by the sound of the mariachis playing, the smell of fajitas, and a margarita in my hand, it felt like I was sitting in "old Mexico." With their tasty food and fun fiesta atmosphere on the weekends, it is no wonder they have been so successful in keeping this restaurant going strong. Hesitant of the NASA/ I-45 construction, I was still able to get to the restaurant by turning on Kobayashi and coming in the back entrance of the parking lot with no traffic headache whatsoever! Located at 1020 W. NASA Parkway in Webster, this location is one of three in the Houston area, including one in Stafford and the other just inside the Beltway at I-45 and Fuqua. "Many of our customers are regulars, and they have favorites that they order every time they come in,” says co-owner Santos Escobar. He and his brother, “Chon” Escobar, want diners to feel like they are experiencing an authentic Tex-Mex feel when they come to Las Haciendas. "We have great service and friendly staff, and much more to offer," added Santos. The Escobar family takes pride in their combination platters, which are unique because they let you try some of everything. For example, the Haciendas Plato comes with two cheese enchiladas, one crispy beef taco, and one fajita taco served with rice, charro beans, sour cream and guacamole. The Stafford

Of course there is plenty to offer the adults, too! Las Haciendas has more than 50 different margarita flavors and combinations to choose from such as guava, sangria, mango, strawberry, pina colada, peach, banana and raspberry. Yum! The Haciendarita is always a good bang for your buck, too, especially during their 4 to 7 pm Happy Hour on Monday through Friday, when you can also enjoy a free mini-buffet along with your ritas or beer. Looking for something different to do on the weekends? Slip on your dancing shoes and head over on Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. til 2 a.m. to party fiestastyle! "Musica Latina" can be heard all night, and you can dance with your friends or your sweetie. The restaurant transforms into a nightclub-feel, and the dance floor is always packed. "We really want people to come out and have a good time," said Santos. - Continued on Page 16
