Loose Notes by Andy Eng Last month, we promised we'd check out some new places and did we. Over-the-top bounce back kudos go to the rebuilt 18th Street Pier in San Leon. Last time we were here was before Ike totally flattened the place. We checked out the venue using our acousticlectic Wood & Wind and certify this place suitable for bands with finer projection. Further inland we caught the grand opening of the new Pier 27 Tavern with the Cecil Shaw Band totally funking out the full house. Both of these places should be perfect indoor music hangouts as the outdoor music beat winds down. Before that happens, don't forget the annual Clifton's Music Brad Blackwell at Hugh & Jeff’s Festival. Also be sure to check out the open mics at T-Bone Tom's and the Cockeyed Seagull. Last year, we got gypped--’tis time to make up...

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE
LOOSE NOTES: Cont. From Page 51 Ike Fest III: “The only helping hand you’ll ever get is when they lower you in the ground,” a comment made by John Mellancamp in a television interview a few years back. Mr. Mellancamp, however, wasn’t referring to the Galveston Bay Area communities and their helping hands. On any given weekend in the communities and neighborhoods all along the Galveston Bay, there is an abundance of fundraising events. Events hosted to assist Volunteer Fire Departments, to help victims of accidents and disease, to assist students with educational items are just a few of the fundraisers that occur and there are many more. Although these communities continue to struggle with post Ike rebuilding there is always time set aside to help those in need. Neighbors helping neighbors….communities reaching out to adjacent communities...all lending a helping hand. Such is the case with the series of IkeFest fundraisers designed to assist musicians with equipment losses suffered at the hands of Hurricane Ike. For an entire year after Ike hit volunteer organizers planned and structured events that supplied musicians and bands with instruments needed to continue performing. Venues offered their services, entertainers donated their time and talent, cook teams prepared food, individuals and businesses donated services, products and items for auction and use, toys were donated for the Marines Toys For Tots campaign and volunteers worked tirelessly to run the events. It has been truly heart warming and inspirational to see the outpouring of assistance. To the communities and citizens of the Galveston Bay Area, on behalf of all involved with IkeFest I, II, and III, League City’s Holiday in the Park, Smoke on the Bayou, the Musicians Benevolent Society and the Galveston Bay Area Musicians Alliance, thank you for supporting your musicians, helping live music play on…thank you for the helping hand! - Lynn Raggio, Galveston Bay Area Musician’s Alliance - Continued on Page 48

LOOSE NOTES: Cont. From Page 49 Fab 40 Abbey Road: The SCENE witnessed a mustsee when local SCENE residents Jon Townsend, Ryan Guidry and string leader Vanessa Vera backed with 40 volunteer musicians from the greater Houston metroplex performed the Beatles Abbey Road album cover to cover at Discovery Green Park. Complete with ethnic ensemble and Houston Symphony musicians, this free show was the third of series following the Yellow Submarine and White Albums. Several local SCENE musicians were spotted in the crowds along with the hundreds of Beatles loving fans of all ages. Borrowing from Andy Upchurch, "The show bent the needle on the Fun Meter!" The Beatles made a few more albums and we'll hopefully catch more of the Fab 40!!! (For more info, see http://fab40music.com/)
Fishbonz Beauty Pagent
----------------------------------------------Bacliff Stretch: A year ago, Bacliff was a battlezone but you couldn't tell this month. We visited Fishbonz, the new upscale icehouse in Bacliff jumping onto the music SCENE with both feet with their kick-butt live music lineups including Slide Effect, Texas Coast and the Michael Stephens band. These folks touched all the bases by hosting the Sunday IkeFest III along with a classy beauty pagent to The Texas Coast Band @ Fishbonz boot. Further down Grand Ave., we stopped in to join Katies hosting the first annual benefit for the Bacliff Volunteer Fire Department. Hear!!! Hear!!! Complete with auctions, BBQ plates, and music from JJ Dynomite and the juggernaut Mark May Band, the great local turnout confirms Katies' on our list of the "good places to be". All the way down Grand overlooking the bay, Clifton's Seaside Diner celebrated their one year anniversary with plenty of snow crab, oysters, and music to satiate SCENE diners. Tops on the list was the Mighty Orq and with the Clifton Music Festival coming October 10, there is plenty to go around... See you there! The Michael Stephens Band @ Fishbonz

‘Party on the Patio’ season has begun at Clifton’s Seaside Diner
By Carmen Bates
With a great view of the bay, live music and tasty seafood platters, there is always something to check out at Clifton’s Seaside Diner.
were very fortunate.” If you haven’t gone outside on the back patio at Clifton’s in a couple years a lot has changed! The patio area is now expanded, with many additions including a stage for live bands, a large stone-fish fountain, and a cozy covered outdoor oyster bar as well. The outdoor atmosphere is a must for locals and visitors alike to relax and enjoy the view.
Located at 10 Grand Avenue in Bacliff, this classic diner has undergone many changes in the past two years, including a change in ownership, expanded patio, and there is also a new menu in the works. Since taking over in August of 2008, owner Corinn Scott has overcome many challenges with the diner, including the battle against Hurricane Ike and the hard-hitting economy. “We were one of the first restaurants in the area to open after Ike since we only sustained minor damage to our patio,” said Scott, “We
“My favorite thing about this place is sitting outside when the weather is nice and just taking in the scenery with friends and family,” said Scott. She goes on to mention that she would not have the same turnout with the restaurant if it weren’t for the help of her crucial staff: the GM James Lundy, the floor and bar manager Taylor Shwartz and Jordan Tubig, the chef at Clifton’s for more than five years. “They all work hard, and it is definitely a group effort,” she added. Join the staff on October 10 for Clifton’s 2nd Annual Fall Music Festival. The all-day event features 12 local bands starting at 11 a.m. This is definitely a family event, so bring the kids for good food, or meet your friends and enjoy drink specials all day long. - Continued on Next Page

Doc’s Upper Deck: Everyone’s Bar, Everyday
Hast Bier? DOCtoberfest III • October 10th With football season in full swing, fans will find themselves at home at Doc’s Upper Deck. Located at 18301A Egret Bay Blvd, Doc’s is the ideal place for cheering on your favorite sports team since the NFL Ticket is broadcast on Doc’s massive bank of TVs on Sunday and Monday. Sunday specials include $1 drinks and a free buffet that changes weekly. During Monday Night Football, specials are 35-cent wings, and $2 domestic pints. During the play-off and bowl games, it is best to reserve a table as the bar fills up quickly. Although the Astros are out of the Pennant race, Doc’s will still broadcast all baseball playoff games, including the World Series. UFC fans can catch the upcoming fights at Doc’s, including UFC 104 (Machida vs. Shogun) and UFC 105 (Penn vs. Sanchez). Because of the growing number of fans, reservations are recommended by calling 281-333-DOCS. Reservation specials include pizza and a pitcher of beer. A point of difference is Doc’s tap wall. It houses over 30 beers, ranging from traditional to seasonal. This is a place where customers can come in and try a new or specialty beer. “Our goal is to move people to a transitional beer and eventually craft beers,” explained owner Randy Prince. “At Doc’s, we offer a huge selection of beers. Go ahead, be brave and try something different. I recommend Warsteiner Dunkel. It’s a dark German beer.” Doc’s Upper Deck is gearing up for its

third annual DOCtoberfest on October 10. This year Doc’s is teaming up with Saint Arnold Brewing as sponsor for the event to make it the biggest yet. This Houston brewery offers an Oktoberfest draft that will be featured at this year’s event. This is an opportunity to get together with friends and listen to some local bands and celebrate Oktoberfest by sampling various German food and beers.
Germany, Prince decided that the Clear Lake area was the perfect place to put on a similar celebration. “DOCtoberfest is Octoberfest, Clear Lake style, the opportunity for people to try a specialty beer. Whether it be a German Octoberfest brewed just for the season, or one of the many tasty microbrews, Doc’s copious offerings from the tap are sure to please,” suggests Coppock. A special Saint Arnold’s beer tub will also be set up to better serve patrons. - Continued on Page 40

ALLEN MATHESON
JOHN ENNIS
CLIFTON GRIM
CLIFF MEINHARDT
Matheson: “Early in the morning, watch for balloon teams driving near the main JSC entrance with their trailers in tow, and follow them out to the launch site. Also, unless you're going for a silhouette, attempt to shoot with the sun at your back.” Ennis: “Instead of waiting for the balloons to reach the festival grounds, follow the balloon teams out to the launch site and take pictures of the process leading up to the launch and the launch itself.” Grim: “Understand the schedules and what is going to go on. The Saturday morning launch gives you an opportunity to photograph set ups and launches from very close. The Friday evening glow is the other great photo opportunity. Meinhardt: “Don't just think about big balloons. From a photographic point of view it can also be abstract colors, lines and shapes, it can be people, it can be action, and look at it from different angles, get up close, get down low, its a great place and a great subject to experiment with.”
RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival October 23, 24 & 25 • Johnson Space Center Whether you dream of flying high over the crowd in a hot air balloon or visiting the moon someday, The City of Nassau Bay and the 16th Annual RE/MAX Ballunar Festival is an event that you cannot miss. Situated in the Clear Lake Area at the NASA/Johnson Space Center, senses will be ignited when dozens of hot air balloons take to the skies in competitions throughout the weekend. Skydiver exhibitions, live entertainment, commercial exhibits, concession booths, a NASA open, and balloon glow are just some of the attractions that will take flight the weekend of October 23-25. “The mission of the festival has always centered on education,” said Steve Lombardi, one of the festival’s co-founders. “Education is the key to a better future and our commitment is to inspire young people to study science and mathematics to prepare them for that future. Throughout the festival’s 16 years, we’ve emphasized this by connecting man’s fascination with flight with the math and science behind one of our greatest innovations.” And what a marriage it is! The festival will have over 70 hot air balloons engaging in navigational competitions that are in large part based on the pilot’s skills in meteorology and math. Every festivity is designed to not only entertain, but stimulate the imagination and encourage young people’s interest in math and science by the thrills of aviation. RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival, Sponsored by the City of Nassau Bay is produced by hundreds of Clear Lake-area volunteers in conjunction with a Board of Directors comprised of various community leaders. The event opens Friday, October 23 at 6:00pm with festivities continuing throughout the weekend. Familyfriendly pricing of just $10 per carload includes Saturday’s NASA Open House from 9am to 5pm, visiting the original Saturn V rockets that took man to the moon, the space vehicle mock-up facility, and the opportunity to get an autograph from an actual NASA Astronaut.

Weekends on the Water
A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence of the
water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venues offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.
News Flash: Weekends on the Water is coming to your computer & TV! You asked for it and now you are getting it! The SCENE Magazine is expanding out into video and is already in production if a number of local, Clear Lake- and Texas-based shows for your viewing enjoyment. The first show hosted by Danielle Feigle is titled Weekends on the Water and is part of a new branding campaign spearheaded by Bay Area Media Services (BAMS) and a number of tourism and service-industry businesses. The goal is to create greater awareness of all the attractions this area has in an effort to make it even more of a destination for people in Houston, the suburbs and beyond! Along with the show, a new website (pictured at left), a new blog, a new e-mail blast campaign and even a hardbound book are being developed. Stay tuned for details on this and other SCENE TV shows which will be airing soon. The SCENE is the official guide to the Clear Lake, Bay Area and Galveston Entertainment Districts. If you have 10 inches or so of extra hair length and are in the mood for a drastic change or makeover, consider shedding that spare hair for a charitable cause. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hair pieces for children who are under the age of 18 and are financially disadvantaged. These children are suffering from hair loss caused by various conditions such as alopecia areata, radiation damage and severe burns. These conditions often have either no known causes or cures so the hair prostheses are often a miracle to these kids.

The mission of Locks of Loves is “to return a sense of self-confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children.” Children who have been affected by hair loss often suffer a loss of self. They are often teased by classmates and are embarrassed by the attention baldness receives. These pieces offer relief and allow kids to get on with their normal lives. Most wigs and other hairpieces are often made for the adultsized head and require adhesives to keep in place that many children find irritating. Locks of Love offers custom-made pieces that go on with a vacuum seal so that only the wearer may remove it. This allows the child to play, swim, shower and do gymnastics.

The bottom line is this: anyone can be a filmmaker. Contrary to popular belief, there's nothing really glamorous or elitist about the craft. Most of the time, making a movie consists of sitting around and waiting for Business of Film Conference ( Heather Leigh Jackson photo) things to happen and when things are happening, digging in ence. If you're reading this, I was a panelist for the “Make Your Movie! The Producer's Panel,” along with three other local producers, Frank Eakin, Susan Fowler and Tom Vaughan. Each of us had a different perspective on how to produce a film; but we all shared in common the notion that it's more important to learn as you go and to just go make your movie than to worry about creating a perfect, crafted work. This, assuming it's your first movie and you're primarily financing it yourself; and you've also got all your legal ducks in a row (never learn as you go when it comes to legal matters!). The house was packed and the laughter was heard clearly outside in the lobby. Audience awards were announced at Dean's Credit Clothing, downtown, shortly after the screening; and are as follows: 5th - Thug Bugs - "This Too Shall Pass" 4th - The Underdogs - "Steam" 3rd - Blimp - "Make Your Move" 3rd - Radiant First Prod - "The Choice" 2nd - Rush Crew - "Addicted" 1st - Simply Red - "Lost in Transition" Top films will be screened soon on www.filmracing.com and the winners will be announced for Houston two to three weeks after. The film voted best film of Houston will go on to national competition. We are on the tail end of the tour (only LA and Brooklyn are left), so the national competition winners will be announced soon, in December.

COVER STORY
888 Bistro offers great food AND good fortune By CARMEN BATES
Sauteed Mushroom with pickled pepper are also top-picks, using the freshest of ingredients to entice your taste buds. If you are in the mood for seafood, there is a large selection on the menu, as well as several items that are lighterflavored with less salt and oil than most Chinese restaurants.
Ranked as the No. 12 Chinese food restaurant in the United States, 888 Bistro is a must-try for anyone who has never had authentic Chinese cuisine. Since opening their doors on 8/8/08, Owner Ben Chen believes good fortune comes to all those who enter their front door, which is “guarded” by two traditional Chinese Kylin statues. Boasting traditional Chinese cuisine, this eatery is an adventure into Asian culture and a step up from what most people enjoy in their Chinese take-out boxes.
Adding to their uniqueness, 888 Bistro offers delivery to their customers located within a 5-mile radius. Order at least $10 of food, and the delivery charge is free.
Located at 16744 El Camino Real, this location is very impressive upon walking through the front door. Besides the hard-to-miss statues out front, the inside feels like stepping into another country. There are more than 6,000 square feet of dining space, or choose to sit outside on the new umbrella-shaded patio. The ambiance is romantic and elegant, with a combination of both traditional Chinese and western decor. The interior is painted dark burgundy, with wooden accents and Chinese calligraphy and paintings adorning the walls. On one wall, note the hand-glued MaJiang pieces, which are from a popular Chinese strategy game. There are also cozy booths for couples and large table tops for big groups as well.
888 Bistro’s full-service, ocean-blue bar brings a surprising change to the ordinary Chinese restaurant atmosphere, with pull-up bar stools and four large flat screen TVs. Hang out with your friends to watch the college games every Saturday in October and enjoy 99-cent domestic bottles and $1.99 imports all day. Also on Saturdays, enjoy $2 frozen drinks and $3 bloody marys and mimosas from open to close. Swing by after work with your co-workers for happy hour Monday through Friday from noon until 7 p.m. Specials include $1.99 domestic beers, $2.50 imports, and $2.99 house wines and wells.
“Someone from China could sit down and eat one of our menu items and feel like they never left home,” said manager Michael Epperley. The owner (who is also the executive chef) is from China, and trained both there and in New York, where he has prepared food for celebrities such as the Clintons and Jackie Chan. Their recipes have a traditional Szechuan theme, but some specialty dishes also include an American blended culture. There are a total of eight chefs at 888 Bistro, and each is a master in his own arena. Not sure what to order? The 888 Steak is a customer favorite. The chefs use shredded rib eye and serve it with a large portion of veggies including eggplant, asparagus and green peppers. It is then topped with honey pepper from Hong Kong, which gives it a sweet and spicy flavor that is truly unique. The Mango Chicken and
