“Nashville Star” runner-up to perform 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 16 at the new La Brisa in League City

John Arthur Martinez comes to town

“What is it with you...” John Arthur Martinez asks in the song "Cobalt Blue" - a lyric written when he was courting his wife, which could just as well be asked of Martinez himself these days. He wears a cowboy hat, but more out of deference to Texas and his ancestors, as he is no hat act. He finished in second place to Buddy Jewell on Nashville Star in its first year, but extrapolating a mainstream stereotype from that would just be wrong. He is heart and soul and defies categorization. He is erudite, world wise, and yet hasn’t lost touch with his roots. He is as much at ease in a work shirt as he is on the podium.

Bowling For Soup Saturday, December 5 SCOUT BAR

John Evans Band

Three years on hiatus provided time to reflect about what’s important- family, friends, and song, and now John Arthur Martinez reemerges. In fact, the impeccable songwriting on this new CD is a testament to that new energy and new direction. PURGATORY ROAD presents a solid collection of story- songs that flow with melody, memories, pure emotion and Martinez’s unique brand of Americana, infused with folk, Latin and country.

YOU COULD WIN DINNER FOR 2 just for becoming our friend at myspace.com/thescenemag

Come out to La Brisa in League City on Wednesday, December 16 to catch the Texasborn Martinez perform a powerful set of snapshots anchored in the reality of our times.

10 YEARS returns to SCOUT BAR DEC 30: w/ Since October, Down From Under & The Last Place You Look Popular alternative metal band 10 Years (Universal Records) will return to Scout Bar this month during what bassist Lewis Cosby describes as “a little batch of shows in between Christmas and New Years.” According to Cosby, the band has been writing, recording and laying down some demos but is looking forward to a little time on the road. “This will give us a good chance to test out some new stuff for a live audience,” Cosby explained. “We can't wait to get back out on the road and do what we do best.” Come out to Scout on Wednesday, December 30th when Cosby and his mates take the stage.

Mike Shanks @ T-bone Tom’s

Texas Renaissance Festival

Crossroads @ T-bone Tom’s

Loose Notes by Andy Eng With the season's overflowing harvest of outdoor live music winding down, we merrily roll inside to cozier settings. The outdoor music SCENE was outstanding this year and we thank all of our outdoor venues for providing entertainment well done. Tops for outdoor music this month goes to the Texas Renaissance Festival. Closer to home on the outdoor beat, we happened into plenty of fine talent popping up in the area including ASCAP singer/songwriter Jeff Lopez and his family band, Crossroads (www.jeff-lopez.com) delighting the SCENE on the T-Bone's patio. Also on the patio, we've been catching Michael Shanks (lead singer of the Misfit Toys) out on the loose trying out some powerful acoustic solo work.

The Kind @ Mother’s Speakeasy 2nd Wind @ Fishbonz

Down the road at Mother's Speakeasy, we happened upon The Kind (http://thekindoftexas.com) a band of seasoned veterans with decades of touring experience that we know will get SCENE listeners rocking to their hard driving Texas beat. We've been a fan of Steve "Hollywood" Rangel's music reviews for some time and simply had to catch his band, 2nd Wind (www.2ndwind.cc) when they came breezing through the SCENE at Fishbonz, Maribelle's, Clifton's, and Mother's Speakeasy. With “Big Ed" on drums and Starr on lead, Hollywood's band put forth covers and originals crisp on texture and smooth with feeling. The band is working to book more gigs in the area and is a group we know you'll enjoy.

The Sid Maxwell Band @ Heads-N-Tails

The Oldies and the Goodies have been hitting the SCENE at Amadeus and Heads & Tails. No other band in the area plays this type of feel good, get down, rock and roll -- Proof we've enough room for everybody.

TERRENCE GLENN BENEFIT @ KATIE’S

Motocycos at Zone 504 Zoning: You can tell a good band when the sidewalk traffic outside stops, listens, and decides to come in and spend time. We saw plenty of that with Motocycos at Zone 504. Think of the stronger more powerful covers in your collection and you got it... Needing a midweek place to hangout? Check out Zone's Wednesday night acoustic night featuring area musician Clinton Ashley.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 51 Over the top good karma kudos goes to Jim Fulton and the folks at Katies for throwing together a first class lineup at the Terrance Glenn benefit show with super performances from Bennie Brasket, the Revelators w/ Tommie Lee Bradley, Pee Wee Bowen, James Reese, the Groove Kings, and Tommie Dardar. Nice job folks!

--------------------------------------------------Taking It In: While getting Hinder tickets at Scout Bar, we happened into the weekly Obsolete August show. Wow... These kats have come a long way in a year, since we last saw them. This weekly gig features cranking alternative acoustic rock. We enjoyed cameo stage appearances from the likes of Brian Carrion (The Crisis), Michael Harrison (Lao Tszu), and Nashville recording artist Natalie Stovall on the two nights we went. While on the Scout Bar, we followed up on a SCENE feature for the Mullet Boyz and took in an evening of the group's "business-inthe-front-Party-in-the-back, four-wheelin',ass-kickin', beer drinkin', wet t-shirt contest enjoying, bar-b-q grillin' kicker box blastin', Rock!" Folks, if you weren't there, you missed one fun show! This coming month, we'll be visiting other indoor music venues -- Check them out and we hope to see you there! The action never cools off at

Pier 27 Tavern The falling temperature outside is having little impact on the action inside Clear Lakes's newest party bar, Pier 27 Tavern. Strategically located where Kemah meets South Shore Harbour, Pier 27 Tavern opened earlier this year and plans to finish 2009 strong with a month packed full of special events, live music (every Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and great promotions. The staff has been taking reservations for Christmas parties, and dates are filling up fast. You can also come in and register to win two EXECUTIVE SUITE TICKETS to the Dallas Cowboys home game in the new $1.5 billion stadium on January 3 against their conference rival Philadelphia Eagles. The Pier 27 Tavern’s New Year’s Eve themed bash is titled Hollywood Nights and will include a $500 balloon drop, drink specials, midnight toast and plenty of fun. Come dressed as your favorite Hollywood Star. One promotion just in time for the gift-giving season is the Pier 27 Tavern Swimsuit Calendar. The calendar features all local girls from the Bay Area posing in some of the hottest swimsuits available from local boutiques and shops. If attractive girls in swimsuits wasn’t enough, the calendar producers added hot rods, choppers, sport bikes and exotics to the photo shoots for the girls to pose with. "Getting the cars, bikes, and girls together in one place for one shoot was tough,” explained Mark-Eric Cerda, producer of the calendar and manager of Pier 27 Tavern. “Add in the countless weather issues and it’s a minor miracle we got it done. But it turned out great and is something everyone will be excited about." The calendar features some of Clear Lake’s hottest models and young ladies including Laci Willis, Jen Manual, Lisa Coulter, Holly Speer, Krystal Sheaves, and Nicole Scott, just to name a few. The shoots were done on location at the Lighthouse Park in Kemah, the South Shore Harbour Marina and other areas giving it a true Clear Lake feel. In addition to Pier 27 Tavern, the calendar will be available at Bakkhus Taverna and Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash and Grill among other spots. The official calendar release party will be held at Pier 27 Tavern on Sunday, December 13 from 3 to 7 p.m. There, you can meet the models, have your calendar signed and check out the featured cars and bikes. Remember, a personally signed calendar is a great gift that really and truly does keep giving all year long! - John Ennis

DECEMBER 2009

Farewell to a Famous Friend Publisher’s Note: Just as the last section of this issue was going to press, I received an email from Stephanie Foster informing us that the Outpost Tavern (OP) would be closing for good in January. Apparently the land the OP sits on was recently sold and Stephanie didn’t want to “wonder when or if someone would come in and say ‘get out by Friday,’” she explained “ I would like to give everyone notice that in January, we close. This way, we can enjoy the place a while longer, and make plans on how to save what we can. I would rather have the Outpost close my way, instead of having someone shut us down one day without so much as a ‘fare-well.’” Minutes after receiving her email, I decided to hold the “Tour Stop Clear Lake” feature originally planned for this space and write something about my experiences at the OP. There were the burgers, the Mashtronaut meetings and the fact everyone always seemed a little looser and friendly at the OP. But then I decided to yield to the best story teller I ever met, the late Jim Shortt. Below and on the opposite page is a shorttened (edited for space) Q & A Jim did on the Outpost Tavern for our Bay Runner magazine in 2003. I hope you enjoy it. Also, make sure to check out our January 2010 issue for more news on the final days of the OP including details regarding the final closing celebration. - John Ennis Originally Published August 2003

owned the Outpost?

Welcome. The scene is a friendly neighborhood tavern. At the bar, patrons are solving Bay Area and worldwide problems. Across the room, a pool game and a shuffleboard match are being contested to the music of cheers, groans, and laughter. The scene is a museum of American space history memorabilia. A spacesuit hangs from the ceiling. The walls are filled with pictures of astronauts in action and NASA publicity photos. Most are signed and include personal inscriptions. The photos of the lost crews of Challenger and Columbia give one the feeling of a shrine. The scene is a Texas chili cook off, da hottest, best kind [is that redundant?] Since dawn's first light, chili crews have been building their showcase booths. The ultimate goal is to win Best Chili & Best Showmanship. The scene is the home of the best cheeseburger and fries on the planet, so voted by the customers. How many places do you know that making an order of fries starts with slicing a potato? The scene is the Outpost Tavern (outpost-tavern.com), all of the above rolled into one converted Ellington Field Army Air Corps wooden barrack. If walls could talk … Well, walls can't talk but folks can. So on a recent fall afternoon, owner Stan Aden, Outpost historian Roger Mitchell and I talked about this landmark Texas beer joint where you can almost smell the adventure of space flight; and where the neighborly spirit of the Bay Area is very alive and well. So step through those famous saloon doors and listen in on our conversation. Jim: Stan, how long have you and Sharon

THE SCENE

Stan: Sharon and I bought the Outpost from the estate of previous owner Gene Ross in 1996. [Stan grins.] Sharon couldn't be here today because her daughter Lisa had twins yesterday. She's in Austin with mother and babies. Everyone's doing great! Jim: Excellent! Double congratulations. Stan, didn't you guys used to come here as customers a long time before you bought the place? Stan: Since 1979. Twenty-four years for us and a lot of other folks. Jim: Is that when it became the Outpost, in 1979? Stan: 1980. In '79 it was owned by Terry Bone and was called the Universal Joint. Gene Ross bought it in 1980 and named it the Outpost Tavern. Jim: Gene had a lot of friends in the space program. I see a lot of memorabilia on the walls. Tell us about those days when Gene was the owner. Stan: This place was packed six nights a week and closed on Sunday. A lot of the older astronauts frequented this place. The newer breed of astronauts aren't like the old breed. They used to party and have fun, carouse and drink beer and pull practical jokes on each other. Now the newer breed is more into family, working out in the gym, stuff like that. So if astronauts come in now, they're usually retired or getting ready to retire. Jim: Because of those days, weren't some space themed movies shot here?

41

Stan: Yeah. Roger, help us out on this. Roger: The first movie that was made in the Outpost was in 1989. The producers shot a made for TV movie [4 stars] named Challenger. It was about the lives of the crew members leading up to the launch. In 1997, Disney Pictures came in and filmed a kind of forgettable comedy called Rocketman [2 stars]. Stan: The last one was Space Cowboys [3 stars]. They shot the bar scene here and then afterwards, the fight scene outside. That had to be every bit of five minutes in the movie. Roger played the bartender. Jim: I'd bet that was a blast. Stan, you tried a live music experiment. Tell us about that. Stan: I tried putting the best regional blues acts from all over the country in here. I know that you came out and reviewed some of them like Jimmy Thackery. - Continued on Opposite Page

DECEMBER 2009

Outpost Tavern • Continued Jim: Yeah, and this place was about three quarters full for Jimmy when folks should have been hanging from the ceiling. The next year at the Seabrook Music Festival, Thackery played to an overflow crowd and knocked'em dead. His performance was easily the best of the festival. Stan: We also had Debbie Davies, W. C. Clark, Deborah Coleman, Lavelle White, Anson Funderburgh and others; but we didn't draw enough people on a regular basis to support those high ticket acts. Jim: I saw most all of those shows and they were all great! Roger, I understand that this building traveled a bit before it arrived here. What do you know about that? Roger: This building was originally a WWII era Air Force, I should say, an Army Air Corps barrack out at Ellington Field. It spent some time down in Dickinson as a Pentecostal Church, which may account for why some of us feel blessed when we come in here. Jim: Ha! Very good. Roger: It was also a Western wear store located near where Heartbreaker's is now. It was moved to Harris County in 1968 and was a barbeque house, an auto parts store and – I haven't been able to verify this one – an Italian restaurant - before it became a bar. It was several different bars before Terry Bone bought it. During the 70s, it was a favorite hang out for JSC engineers getting ready for the Shuttle program. Jim: Yep. I was one of them. Terry had a lot of board games like backgammon, chess and Othello, plus pool, darts and ping-pong for the more athletic patrons. Roger: When Gene bought it from Terry in 1980, there wasn't much space related stuff on the walls. At that time, Bob Crippen and John Young were getting ready for STS 1. They liked to find out-of-the-way places and this was one that they hung out in. One day they brought their boss, George Abby, with them. Gene got to know George and asked him for some pictures to put up on the walls. So George said sure and got everybody in his astronaut office to autograph a picture for the Outpost. And that started a tradition of getting pictures for the Outpost walls. Gene and George became good friends and remained so until Gene's death in April of 1996. Jim: So while Gene was the owner, the Outpost became a popular hangout for astronauts and aerospace types – sort of sophistication upside down. Then you and Sharon bought the place

THE SCENE

when Gene died. How did that come about, Stan? Stan: Gene kinda wanted me to do it. We talked about it when he was sick and he wanted us to do it. He wanted us to try to keep the place going. So we figured out a way to do it. Jim: There's another tradition we haven't talked about; that's having the best cheeseburger on the planet. Gene started it and Sharon must have gotten his recipe. Roger: I think the secret is having a well-seasoned grill. Jim: [Chuckling] Hmmm … could be. Roger: A couple of years ago [the city of] Webster got a new Fire Marshall. He red tagged the kitchen for not having a vent hood that was up to code. Stan: See that new vent hood over there? Remember when we were cookin' burgers we'd open the window and turn on that little vent fan? Now we've got the whole deal. Tell Jim how we got it, Roger. Roger: When Stan and Sharon found that out, the cost was going to be too much for this bar to pay for. So it became kind of a community project with cash donations and a lot of free labor. Stan: The bar didn't do it. We had a town meeting in here one night and I told everybody that I couldn't afford to spend that kind of money on the kitchen. It wasn't ten thousand dollars. It ran what, fifteen-five or sixteen grand before it was all over? Roger: Twelve thousand for the kitchen. Stan: Donations came rolling in. Bob Crippen was in from Colorado for his NASA physical and came by and left a check for $500. All kinds of people donated. You couldn't beat that. That was great stuff. Roger: After that town meeting, one of the people went home and set up a web site called, at the time, Save The Outpost. Within two weeks, Sharon got a call from Bruce Nichols of the Dallas Morning News. He had been to the Outpost while covering the space program. He wrote an article for their Sunday Feature section. Pretty soon after that Houston's Channel 11 came calling. It escalated to the point that one day a reporter from the New York Times showed up. Stan: And they did an interview and published a big picture of the Outpost Tavern on Page 1 of their Sunday Community section. Roger: And then it went international. I got a call from Sharon who doesn't like to do interviews so I sometime act as her spokesman. She asked me to show up and do an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation's World News program. That program is sent

40

around the world by shortwave. It was pretty interesting, being interviewed by the BBC. Jim: I'm sure. Roger: Then one day at lunch – and I have no idea how this came about - I get a call on my cell phone and it's an aerospace oriented magazine in Turin, Italy. They had carried the original story that was in the New York Times and wanted an update – were we successful and still in business? Jim: Incredible! Roger: So we're now known internationally. I just wish we were better known locally. Jim: Yeah, that would be good. Tell us about the chili cookoffs. Roger: Terry Bone started the cookoffs and Gene and Stan continued them. Stan: We do the cookoff every year in late April. It's been successful every year and we've always had a good turnout. Last year we had 21 teams. Jim: Do you still have the contestants build the showcase cookoff booths? Stan: That's right. We award three places for chili and the overall Showmanship Award. Jim: Besides all this, the Outpost hosts a bunch of NASA related events, doesn't it? Stan: We do. We hosted the Columbia end of crew training party. And when tragic NASA events occur, we become a community focal point. After the Columbia tragedy a lot of the community came here to mourn. We were literally snowed by a barrage of interviews from reporters from around the world. Sharon's picture was in the New York Times along with a story on the Outpost. I was told that I was on the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. It was a madhouse for three days. Jim: As to the future, how will the new road affect you? Stan: You mean if they ever build a road? The Transportation and Safety Board told me there will be an exit ramp right at this property; they said that it would curve around and take off a little property but not much. ----------------------------------Publisher’s Note: This Q&A was originally published in the Bay Runner magazine in 2003 and was edited for space in this issue.

Texas Beer Enthusiast grow! to s e u n ti n o c y n a p m g Co craft brewery Southern Star Brewin ents in the works for Conroe Many new developm

Andy Eng photos

The SCENE first reported on the youngest Craft Brewery in Texas in our March 2009 issue after making a run up to Conroe to report on the Southern Star Brewing Company. We became instant fans of Southern Star’s offerings, which include the Bombshell Blonde, Pine Belt Pale (ale) and Buried Hatched (stout) among others. Upon returning from that first trip to Southern Star, we began an effort aimed at bringing it to some establishments on this side of downtown’s Flying Saucer, the top beer bar in the region. If you have been reading the SCENE in recent

months, you have noticed Southern Star is now in the Bay Area and available at a select number of SCENE clients including Hugh & Jeff’s Carwash and Grill in League City and Bakkhus Taverna in Kemah. Specials thanks to our new friends at OMNI International Beverages for making that happen. But as Southern Star’s reach has expanded -- it is now available in Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, South Carolina and even has surfaced in China -- the brewery has experienced some growing pains and struggled to keep up with demand -- a problem any new business would be happy to deal with. Last month, we returned to Southern Star with members of The SCENE Brew Crew and are happy to report some new developments. The first development we noticed immediately upon entering the brewery were new stainless steel 50-barrel fermenters, a major investment aimed at keeping up with demand. We also learned our favorite Southern Star offering, the Buried Hatched, will soon be available in cans which will result in much wider distribution. Keep on eye on this space in future issues for more news on Southern Star and other Texas Craft Breweries. - John Ennis

Divine #9: When Craft Beer & Twitter crossed paths We first wrote about the excitement surrounding Saint Arnold Brewing Company’s Divine Reserve series back in 2007, then detailing the lengths some craft beer enthusiasts would go to to locate and purchase a six pack or two of the limited release, one-time brewed beer before it sold out. But the hysteria has only increased since with the releases of Divine Reserve #8 in September and then Divine Release #9 the day this issue went to press. Probably the most interesting development is the use of Facebook updates and Twitter “tweets” in assisting the beer lovers locate and identity stores with pricey micorbrew in stock. Despite the reports of widespread sell-outs in just minutes and individuals hiring day laborers to get around the one-sixpack-per-person limit, I’m happy to report The SCENE did acquire some Reserve #9 -- an Imperial Pumpkin Stout with 11% alcohol -- and will report back on it and other just-released Winter/Holiday Seasonals in our January issue. Cheers! - John Ennis

MOODY GARDENS SHEDS LIGHT ON HOLI-

Festive sights and sounds once again fill the air at Moody Gardens during the Festival of Lights ongoing through January 2. As one of the largest holiday celebrations on the Gulf Coast, the annual event receives over 85,000 visitors, many of whom have made the festival their own holiday tradition.

Santa Claus kicked off the festivities on November 14 by parachuting in to switch on a mile-long trail of more than one million lights. The festival will be celebrated Thursdays through Saturdays until December 16 and daily starting December 17 through January 2, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. In addition to over 100 sound-enhanced animated light displays and nightly live entertainment, visitors can strap on a pair of skates and glide across

the ice at the area’s only Outdoor Ice Skating Rink. Indoors, visitors can take pictures with Santa or enjoy a variety of holiday-themed films at the IMAX® 3D Theater, Ridefilm Theater and 4D Special FX Theater. In the spirit of tradition, Polar Express 4D will return with interactive special effects like snow, wind and the smell of hot chocolate to engage all the viewers’ senses.

Friends, family or colleagues can enjoy each other’s company over the annual Holiday Dinner Buffet at the Garden Restaurant or at the Gift of Christmas Live Show and Dinner which combines a fine dining experience with a festive performance by Texas’ brightest talents. The Gift of Christmas Live Show and Dinner is scheduled for Dec. 17 through Dec. 27, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. daily. Tickets to this holiday event will be $43 for adults and $25 for children. The Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Dinner and Shows begin at 4:40 p.m. with caroling. A new Children’s Matinee Show on Dec. 16, 17 and 18 at 1

p.m. will open the season. Tickets for the Children’s Matinee are $15 for adults and $10 for children. There are also hotel packages available that include tickets to the Festival of Lights and Gift of Christmas Live dinner show. For more information on these packages, please call 888-3888484. Admission to the Festival of Lights is $5.95, and tickets to additional attractions including the Aquarium Pyramid®, holiday IMAX® 3D film, holiday Ridefilm, Discovery Museum and Colonel Paddlewheel Boat, can be purchased for $5 each with a Festival of Lights ticket. For more information, please call 800582-4673 or visit moodygardens.org.

Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence of the water's natural beauty.

Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venues offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

Featured Event: CHRISTMAS BOAT PARADE Ring in the holidays with the 48th Annual Christmas Boat Lane Parade on Clear Lake. More than 100,000 people traditionally enjoy this event from land and from hundreds of boats anchored throughout the lake. The parade features more than 100 brightly decorated power and sailboats that will traverse the Clear Lake channel from the South Shore Harbour Marina and the Nassau Bay Lagoon to Galveston Bay. Enter your own boat in the parade or enjoy the lighted parade from your favorite Bay Area restaurant. For questions or details contact Shari Sweeney, 281-488-7676.

DECEMBER 2009

WINNING FILM SHOWED AT STAR CINEMA By Domino Taylor The Gulf Coast Film Festival honored the winning films with crystal awards at a recent film screening at Star Cinema Grille. Winning first place in Best Drama was the Entertainer’s Last Stand, directed by Carlos A. Pagan. WKTZ News, Clear Creek High School’s radio station and sponsor Marilyn Othon presented the special event along with Star Cinema and the Gulf Coast Film Festival on October 22 at Star Cinema Grille. The theatre was full and Carl’s movie poster was proudly displayed in the lobby with the company of every current major Hollywood film. There were t-shirts for sale in the lobby that promoted the movie and all movie goers were treated to a very special night. Director and producer FILM COLUMN Continued From Page 14 What makes him a true gem is that his decisions can't be influenced. He's written all but a few of the films he's directed and maintains complete control over all of them. A-list actors like Christian Bale, Tim Roth, Willem Dafoe and most recently, Nicolas Cage, work with Herzog simply to work with Herzog; they don't do it for the money. A rogue filmmaker, at heart, Herzog announced loudly that in this digital age we live in he won't accept any excuses from a wannabe filmmaker. Cameras are readily available, and if you can't afford one, "steal one," he says. According to Herzog, "The world reveals itself to those who travel on foot." I'm composing this month's article from a hostel in the heart of Tuscany-Florence, Italy. The church bells just finished ringing as the sun sets. It's quite cold and rainy outside today, so it seemed like as good a time as any to write my column; that, and my deadline was two days ago. I'm enjoying the art and architecture of Italy during the low season with quieter scenic areas and cheaper lodging. I began my trip in Athens and the view atop the Acropolis is a sight to be seen indeed! It's truly phenomenal to experience structures thousands of years old, up close.

Gulf Coast Film Festival Honors Winners Carlos A. Pagan is a student of Clear Creek High School and lives in League City and says, “This won’t be my last film. This is great!” Before the premiere, Hal Wixon of the Gulf Coast Film Festival thanked the sponsors and proceeded with the awards among the popcorn and Coke crowd.

Other winners given awards where, Denise Boucher for Best Short – Unfortune.net and Cynthia Neely for Best Script: Super Luke. These films will also be aired at next year’s film festival. For more information and listings of all participates, log on to www.gulfcoastfilmfestivalcom.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus stands a whopping 17 meters high, and I actually sat in the Theatre of Dionysos! After five full days of exploring. I took a train to Thessaloniki and watched as many movies as I could. I caught a flight to Rome and was yet again amazed by the ancient Roman ruins. I recommend viewing the Colloseum at night, so as to avoid a barrage of tour guides soliciting their services and Roman soldiers begging you to take their pictures. Whether you like his films or not, Herzog is quite an inspiration. He's traveled across the globe and seen more than most people. The vast majority of his films deal with obscure individuals with unlikely talents or extraordinary hopes and dreams. Oftentimes, it's man against nature, and it's a toss up as to who will win -- and of course, to what end. Typically his characters are driven insane by both their passions and their downfalls. Herzog's films can be hopeful or despondent, enlightening or frightening. Most importantly though, is that his films are informative and entertaining at the same time. He takes great care in crafting images on screen so as to interest his audience.

year. When asked if Herzog would change anything about his films, he was quite clear that he wouldn't. His films are his children and because of that he wouldn't change a thing. I feel the same way about ST. NICK. Sure there are subtle details that would have been better this way or that; but really, the film inhibits the unique personalities of everyone involved. And, for better or for worse, I'm rather comfortable with that. Several of my upcoming films are locked and loaded and ready to premiere next year on the festival circuit. As I parted with my producing partners, I felt the year coming to an early end. The day I checked out of my hotel, I boarded a flight to Rome and spent three full days walking the city before catching a train to Florence. Rome and Florence were all about seeing the sights and trolling the museums. Tomorrow I'll head out to Cinque Terre, five villages along the Italian Riviera, and take in a bit of the Ligurian Sea, as I hike along the rigid coastlines and visit the historic neighboring villages. On my way back to Rome to catch my flight back to the States, I plan to stop at Pisa for a half-day visit. This trip has been a welcome break from America and a great way to end the year.

ST. NICK has basically run its course for this year, and we'll be announcing a distribution deal by the beginning of the new

ANNUAL HOLIDAY FAVORITES ARE HERE! The annual holiday favorites of the art community are upon us, and it is time to make your plans to see the holiday season classics that we all treasure. Several holiday performances are a must-see. An annual Christmas and Bay Area must is The Nutcracker, by the Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre. This time honored tradition is a story of magic and a Christmas celebration. An amazing journey begins when young Clara joins her family and friends at a holiday party. She is given a nutcracker by the mysterious Dr. Drosselmeyer and the wonderful story is told in a ballet wonderland. This is for the whole family and if not a tradition in your family yet, this is a good year to start. Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre (BAHBT) performs this beautiful performance at University of Houston- Clear Lake in the Bayou Theatre, 2700 Bay Area Blvd. Performances are December 4, 5, 6, & 11, 12, 13. Friday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday performances are at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday performances are at 2 p.m. Tickets go fast on this popular event, so reserve today. For more information, visit bahbt.org or call 281480-1617. Grygier and Steven Carmona will help bring this classic to life dancing the roles of Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Nutcracker. A tap routine to Brian Setzer’s swing version of ‘The Nutcracker Suite’ and rockin’ numbers performed by Kennedy Dance Theatre’s Hip Hop Company and Dancin’ Divas will also help kick off the holiday season. This exciting show will also feature a visit from Santa Claus. The one day performance is December 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Grace Community Church, 14505 Gulf Freeway. If you haven’t done this before, try it, skulking through the brush in search of an elusive warbler or watching the feeder just might be what one needs after all the Christmas activities. Armand Bayou is also hosting the Kid’s Holiday Camp, for nature-loving children from December 21-30 during the school break. It is an opportunity to catch a break from the ‘Play Stations’ and TV. For more information on these fun events, log on to www.ABNC.org. This non-profit organization needs the support of the Bay Area and you! Well, these are a “few of my favorite things.” Merry Christmas!

-----------------------------------An additional holiday tradition is the Open Door: Winter 2009 Juried Exhibition at the Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake (TAACCL). Whether you are looking to enjoy the company of good friends, or rejoicing in a special occasion, nothing says celebration quite like sushi. Located at 977 NASA Parkway, Masa Sushi has been serving the Clear Lake area for more than four years now. With a second location at 1804 FM 646 in Dickinson that has been open for more than three years, it is obvious that owner Michael Zhou is doing something right. When asked the secret to his success, Zhou had plenty to say. With 25 years of sushi experience, “I put my heart into the food and business,” said Zhou. He goes to work at the restaurant Michael every day, and & Chi personally orZhou ders fish from California and Hawaii himself. He has family is in the

seafood business in both states, so he gets better quality fish for a better price, and is able to share that savings with his customers. The Blue Fin Tuna served at Masa Sushi, for example, is flown in fresh every Tuesday and Thursday. Teamwork is also very important to his success. “My sushi and kitchen chef have been with me for more than 10 years,” said Zhou. His restaurants feature a warm decor, and a very clean environment. There are booths and tables to sit at, or you may choose to watch sushi being prepared at the large sushi bar. Customers at Masa Sushi typically consist of families, romantic dates, and business parties as well.

The menu at Masa Sushi has plenty to offer everyone. Try the new “Michael’s Special Roll” which is created

with lobster. Their Masa Hot Rock Beef is very popular, because it comes sliced very thin and is prepared by diners in the traditional Japanese style of tablecooking. Other must-try menu items include the Black Pepper Tuna Sashimi and, of course, their sushi rolls. Lunch specials run daily until 3:30 p.m., and are “large portions at a very good price,” said Zhou. What’s even more exciting is that Masa Sushi has partnered with Take-Out Waiter delivery service, which can deliver sushi right to your home or office. Call the restaurant at 281-4869888 for details, and make sure to check out their online menu at www.masasushitexas.com for all your to-go needs. Catering is also an option, because Masa Sushi has their own crew who handles large parties such as weddings. Anything on the menu is available and there is no group too large. - Continued on Page 20

America gets a taste of T-bone Tom’s Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” airs visit to Kemah steakhouse On the day before Hurricane Ike bore down on the Texas Gulf Coast last year, T-Bone Tom’s owner Barry Terrell planned to remain open to serve any die-hard customers who decided to brave the storm. Instead, authorities issued a mandatory evacuation for Kemah, so Terrell could do little except post “Open Sunday” on the sign outside and leave. When he came back, his restaurant sat in more than 5 feet of water, and the sign had to be changed to “Open Someday.” That day was the Monday before Thanksgiving 2008. Exactly one year later on the Monday before Thanksgiving 2009 Terrell and his unique eatery was featured on the Food Network's acclaimed cable television show, “Diners, Drive-ins & Dives” while fans of the 35-year-old establishment packed the place for the viewing party under the giant, new palapa in the outdoor patio known as “Tom’s Backyard.” “We were thrilled to be recognized on the episode," stated Barry Terrell, owner of T-Bone Tom's. "We've been serving tasty comfort food to our loyal patrons since 1974, and we look forward to sharing our choice steaks and seafood well into the future." Congratulations to the Terrell family, general manager Anna Kennedy -- who was the star of the episode -- and the entire T-bone Tom’s staff for not only bouncing back from Hurricane Ike, but bouncing back bigger and stronger than ever. - John Ennis

On Assignment from Greece The Thessaloniki International Film Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary this year and ST. NICK chose this festival in Greece to make its world premiere. I arrived via train and conversed with a Greek most of the way. He showed me where my five star hotel was and the staff graciously allowed me to check in at 8AM. I slept a great deal that day, but eventually met up with my coherts in crime, who arrived much later. TIFF is especially interesting because of the films they program. A great deal of the films I saw, I just won't get to see in the States. Perhaps if I purchase a DVD or maybe, just maybe, some of them might be available on Netflix; but a great deal of them I'd never get to see again, and certainly not on the big screen. Both of our screenings were packed full of festival goers and industry people; but mostly Greek cinema goers. It's really a treat to see such an interest in festival films from the masses. As the film played and the Greek subtitles flurried onto the screen, I found myself in a quasi state of a European trance. The festival even flew out the real stars of the show: our child actors, Tucker and Savanna Sears. What a

The real highlight of the festival for me, though, was discovering Werner Herzog. I've known of the man for quite sometime, as he's something of a legend; but not in such depth. Herzog has directed over 50 films, a hodgepodge of features, shorts, narratives and documentaries. His work has been well-received and awarded at major festivals all over the world, and he was nominated for an Academy Award in 2008. Most recently, he's premiered two films for 2009: MY SON, MY SON, WHAT HAVE YE DONE? and THE BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS. The latter, starring Nicolas Cage, is now playing in theaters. Both films merely scratch the surface of Herzog's ouvre, but would be interesting introductions. The festival's retrospective screened every one of his films, twice. Herzog also garnered a Golden Alexander -- the primo award of the festival -- and gave a master class. I was bombarded with a true master of storytelling and documentaries of, as he puts it, "ecstatic truth!"

Herzog proclaims that "cinema knows no mercy." He says one should not be a fly on the wall when filming a documentary, but a hornet stirring things up.

HAUTE FOR THE HOLIDAYS Want to be super haute on a cold winter night? Whether an office party, family function or a friend’s shindig, we all want to make an impact and appear stunning without actually stunning anyone. After all, no one wants to be the tart that’s talked about at the water cooler Monday morning! How do choose an appropriate look and jazz it up for the fun, festive holiday season?

When searching for the perfect holiday party look, it’s imperative that you first consider your event. You should instantly know what is appropriate attire. Midriff, cleavage and leg are a good barometer of what should be covered. My rule of thumb is to avoid all three at an office party (show more “arm”), skip the midriff and cleavage for families, and skip the midriff at “party, parties”, unless you are showing it in the form of a cute cut-out dress which are very red carpet this season. Also, I usually start piecing together my look from the shoes up. Find out where the majority of the party is being held. If it’s strictly inside then strappy, sparkly heels can definitely be in order. If the event is indoor/outdoor you may want to consider boots to keep those tootsies warm.

Strappy heels go with just about anything. If your dress or outfit is very sparkly, keep shoes and accessories muted and understated. If you have a simple black dress, then jewel crusted shoes will be just the perfect amount of pizzazz. I find that the little black dress can be a little boring for a festive party so if you go with one, be sure to jazz it up with sparkling earrings and accessories. Also, layering two or three necklaces is a sure way to haute it up for a party. If you go the direction of boots, A-line dresses are the perfect compliment to almost any style of boot. If you go with an ankle boot, try colored tights. If you go all the way with this season’s thighhigh boot, try metallic tights. Metallic tights can be pretty overwhelming, but if only about 3 to 5 inches are showing, it really adds texture and dimension to your dress.
