Make A Difference Bay Area

ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition comes to town By Domino Taylor The highly popular TV series, ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has come to Houston’s Bay Area and one well deserving family will get the ultimate surprise of their life by Ty Pennington and his team on January 7. The worthy recipient of this dream home has local builder, Blu Shields Construction, a Division of Energy Solutions Homes, Coastal Building Specialists, at the helm of this mighty project. Blu Shields Construction is reaching out to the community, businesses, organizations and corporate offices for monetary donations for this worthy cause. Patrick Henderson, CEO of Blu Shields Construction stated, “When ABC came to us to build a home for this family, we were honored. We are not into the glamour or fame, we just want to pull the community together to make what would normally take 8 to 15 months to build, complete in seven days. “In one week we will go from demolition, ground breaking and concrete slab to the heroic family sleeping in their new beds.”

Patrick Henderson, CEO of Blue Shields Construction (L) and Blu Shields, President of Blue Shields Construction (R) are seeking donations for a Bay Area Houston family for ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Photo courtesy of Wiredin.cc

the building. The reveal will be January 14, when the famous slogan “Move That Bus!” is shouted to the heavens and the completed home is viewed for the first time and the family enters their new home. Now this might be the day to have extra tissues on hand after the tears of joy shed for a job well done by talented and generous people.

Being a fan of the show, Henderson, his grandfather Blu Shields and grandmother Pat Shields have family pride on always giving back to the community and helping those in need. Henderson stated, “Our company shares the same philosophy as Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (EM:HE) good people helping good people.” Blu Shields Construction and Energy Solutions Homes have worked diligently putting people back in their homes after the devastating hurricane Ike. Besides the Good Samaritan deeds that this construction company delivers, EM: HE knew that they shared another vision with Blu Shields Construction, to change custom homebuilding.

To make a monetary donation, please visit the special account set up with PayPal at http://www.blushieldsextreme.com/donations. If anyone can help with the design needs contact the Design Team at Design@wiredin.cc. Construction materials and supplies donations need to contact the Construction Team at Construction@wiredin.cc. For sponsorships, contact Sponsorship Coordinator at Sponsorships@wiredin.cc. Check frequently on these websites, as they are updated daily and will continue with updates after the family is revealed.

“Our homes are built within 30 to 45 days,” said Blu Shields, President of Blu Shields Construction, “and they are built below the average construction costs all while building energy-efficient homes.” Henderson added, “We will have approximately 300 construction workers working 24/7, including concrete workers, framers, siding, woodworkers, lumber, roofing, plumbing, electrical, flooring and A/C professionals. Our website has a list of items needed, but at this time our most urgent need is monetary donations, and for that we have set up a PayPal account so anyone can contribute. $5 goes a long way and $5,000 goes even further.”

This project is bringing all builders together, while uniting the community with skilled and non-skilled volunteers. They need your help. This event will always be remembered in Houston’s Bay Area. Be a part of this historical project and help a deserving family. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is in its 7th season. The Emmy Award winning reality program airs Sundays at 7 p.m. CT on ABC, local affiliate Channel 13.

The build schedule starts January 4 with the Pep Rally, for the volunteers and sponsors; January 7 is the “Door Knock” when Pennington and his team notify the family with the “Braveheart Walk.” The famous walk is the masses of “blue shirt & white hard hat” clad volunteers that walk in a ceremonial rank and file procession to the site that officially kicks off

Make A Difference Bay Area Makeover: Home Edition has almost daily updates and postings. We also keep our followers, fans and friends posted on Facebook, MySpace and are working toward improving our Tweetings.

It‘s been on my mind for a while... As a highly respected media source, so often we are inundated with media releases and information of upcoming fundraisers and worthy causes needing community attention. As an answer to this on-going dilemma, we decided to start a blog in part because we are an advertiser-supported magazine, and there is only so much free editorial we can run. I learned at a very young age, that even one person has the ability to make a difference in one life, or in many. We each leave finger prints or ripples of our presence in all we meet... sometimes it's noticeable, sometimes it's hard to see... but we all matter, and we all Make a Difference. Visit http://makeadifferencebayarea.blogspot.com/ from time to time for updates and releases – some of which did not make the magazine and some, like the Extreme

I hope you will find useful information on my blog on how you can reach out and touch someone's life in a positive way: Maybe by volunteering time; maybe by donating gifts (monetary or item donations); or just by spreading the word about a fundraiser or benefit... The Scene’s Great Chefs An On-Going Series Chef Bruce Trathen Jr. Cullen’s Upscale American Grille 11500 Space Center Blvd. • 281-991-2000 Your Specialty: Two years as Executive Sous Chef. Previously with Four Seasons Hotels and owner/chef at Stoneway Cafe in Seattle, Washington. Your Specialty: Chanterie / Sausage. Signature Dish: Toad in the hole. Why is it so great you ask? Because it reminds me of my childhood and I get to make them for my kids like my mom did for me. And who doesn’t love eggs and toast? Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? While working for the Four Seasons Hotels, we would always have at least one celebrity in house. While in Seattle, I had the good fortune of cooking for Julia Child, Elvis Costello, Jeff Smith (The Frugal Gourmet), Dave Mathews, members of Pearl Jam and Sound Garden, Derek Jeter, Ken Griffey Jr., Bill Gates and many others. Does this make me famous by association? At Cullen’s, we’ve had the pleasure of cooking for Andy Pettitte, Brandon Backe, Rudy Tomjanovich and on occasion Houston’s own Booker T. makes an appearance. My job is so cool! Please share one special cooking tip or technique with our readers: A pound of butter makes everything better! A pound of bacon doesn’t hurt either. Chef Andy Zhuo

Floyd’s Cajun Seafood

SPECIALIZING IN LARGE PORTIONS AND AUTHENTIC CAJUN CRAWFISH By Carmen Bates Crawfish season is here early! There is no better place to find authentic Cajun crawfish, than Floyd’s Cajun Seafood. Located at 20760 Gulf Frwy. in Webster, it is hard not to notice this unique building with a large oyster boat attached to the restaurant. What most people don’t know, however, is that Floyd’s was started by the “infamous” brother of the Landry’s family, Floyd Landry. Also known as “Dawg,” he and business partner Bret Floyd are “a great combination, and work well off each other, especially in the kitchen,” said General Manager Kevin Benoit. Bret Floyd also has deep roots in the Houston area since the 1960s, when his father, Don Floyd (#75) was All-Pro each year for the Houston Oilers. Although, there are two other Floyd’s restaurant locations (Pearland and Beaumont), this particular store has been open for five years, and you will find several of the original servers still working there. “Most restaurants usually have a high turn-over,” said Benoit, “but not here.” One of those familiar faces is Smiley, the long-time cook who can always be seen smiling back at you through the galley of the boat. Floyd's management is proud of their staff and their service, which Benoit sited as one of the many

reasons why their reputation has carried them through the recession. “We have a full bar at lunch, and it never empties out until we close” said Benoit. They pride themselves on their family atmosphere and respectful clientele. Floyd’s is all about large portions – and that includes the kids’ menu as well. According to Benoit, it’s almost impossible to leave without a to-go box. “You really get a great value for your money,” he added. Floyd’s has its own blue crab factory in Mexico, which means they get fresh crab in their doors within two days of catching. Some must-try items include “Floyd’s Original” (crabmeat-stuffed grilled mush-

rooms or fried jalapeños) and creamy, rich crab bisque. They are also well-known for their freshshucked oysters prepared behind the boat-shaped bar by Manuel – who has been working for “Dawg” for 31 years. “Oysters Floyd” takes 30 minutes to prepare, but is a favorite among the regulars: a dozen freshshucked oysters with jumbo shrimp, topped with fresh blue crab meat, smothered in house white cream sauce, cheddar cheese, and baked until golden. Their popular lunch menu has meals ranging from $7.50 to $10.99, with variety that includes “something for everyone.” For dessert, order some of Bret's Mom’s recipe of homemade bread pudding. - Continued on Page 20

Most people would say it is a little early for crawfish, but not once they get a look at what Floyd’s is serving! Make sure you stop by for their everyday special, 5 pounds of crawfish for just $20.

“BROWN HAIR”

When my clients come in considering a drastic change with their hair, it’s so easy for me to stand behind the chair and convince them to go for it. I am not always there to see the consequences of big changes: how they feel during the process and how it changes their outlook on themselves. New haircuts and colors can have a powerful impact on you, and the way you feel about yourself. I often forget about this poignant part of the process – Well… until I did it myself.

e l eg a n t l y e dg e y

I don’t know what happened to me. I arrived at work one day and simply asked my co-worker to color my hair brown. I picked his chin up off the floor and tried to dissuade his disbelief by smiling largely. I told him to leave me some highlights and make the rest a rich dark brown. I was numb to it. As he placed the color on each section of hair, I felt nothing. I didn’t know what was to come. When it came time to rinse everyone stood around the bowl and poked and prodded my hair. As I was blow-drying, I thought, “Well this is what you wanted, and it’s going to be grand.” Afterwards my co-workers stood staring at me in shock and horror. I had dark brown – almost black – hair. My first thought was, “Hmmm.” My second was “holy S*&%!” It was done, and I just stared. I did not recognize myself and almost thought maybe it would be gone tomorrow. I caught glimpses of myself in the salon mirrors and was fascinated. I peeked around corners, shook my hair and wondered what everyone would say. As I went to bed that night I forgot about the day’s events and drifted off to sleep. The next morning I popped out of bed only to nearly scream when I saw myself in the mirror! I had a panic rise in my stomach, and I almost shed tears. What have I done?! It was still there. I analyzed it, wished I had done something different: maybe a different shade or rinsed it sooner. The blond was all gone. - Continued on Page 37

LOCAL AUTHOR CINDY PRICE FULFILLS FANTASY @ Rock-N-Roll Fantasy Camp SC

EN

ARTS

By Peggy “Domino” Taylor An interesting chance meeting with author Cindy Price at a charity function began with small talk of our similar interest over appetizers that continued as we all settled in after posing for photos documenting our daunting dinner. I knew my recent acquaintance to be fun from the very get-go, because she was a new guest at the annual Nassau Bay Witches Halloween Luncheon, a zany charity event for rescue animals, that appearing as a witch is not just a must, but required (for entertainment purposes only). Sharing the original commonality: we love to help animals and possess a sense of fun, hence the full witch’s garb and all the inconveniences it entails to make it appear effortless at the strike of noon. By the time our entrees were served, I didn’t know if my silliness and tear-dripping laughter with Cindy was due to a slight giddiness resulting from pressure applied to my brain from my 5-pound ornate witch hat or that we just tickled ourselves going down memory lane that resembled an impromptu version of ‘The Top 10 List of Rock Star Anecdotes’. It was both. Possessing a mutual joy of recalling past events and experiences with laughter, we understood our own odd mix of aviation and rock music background. Our shared path of journalism took me down the road of reliving my past in rock radio and aviation and it took Cindy to entertaining me with her Rock-N-Roll fantasies and her aviation career and work with NASA. Being a regular columnist, Cindy has taken her writing to another level covering many topics including her fantasy to be a rock star in her first published book, In My Humble Opinion. Not wanting to miss a word of her story among a vivacious crowd, I leaned into the

THE SCENE

center of the table with even more interest, I felt as though I had just met a ‘kindred spirit’, all while wiping fluorescent orange cupcake icing off my costumed elbow. Wanting to be a rock star since near the beginning of rock music, she reflects in her musings that there is something about writers and rock music. Pointing out that horror novelist, Stephen King played in a band, as did humorist David Berry. “Years ago I wrote in my humor column about creating my own virtual band and being a lead singer. I named the band, ‘Hydrazine’, a type of rocket fuel and I titled the imaginary CD ‘Rock-It-Fool’. I printed out a sign up sheet and actually got a lot of folks to join.” After writing her book about this imaginary band, they never got to play together, much less practice. Cindy then heard about the Rock-N-Roll Fantasy Camp that gives ordinary folk a chance to record and to live like a rock star for a brief period. Even pretending to be a rock star is costly, the camp is not cheap. She contacted one of the local radio stations to sponsor her as a writer going to rock camp, but it never materialized. Cindy Price would not give up this fantasy obsession. After a modest windfall, she decided to ditch the idea of responsible financial planning in hard times or fixing her shower and her needed home repair, and ‘blew’ it all on Rock-N-Roll Fantasy Camp. “You only live once, so I went to rock camp!” Embarking on a unique venture she will never forget, Cindy and her husband went to LA, staying at the Andaz boutique hotel on LA’s Sunset Strip. Immedi-

25

ately she loved her room overlooking the Hollywood Hills and was pampered like a rock star. “I can’t carry a tune to save my life,” Cindy admitted. It didn’t stop her and she went on to have the chance of a lifetime, to sing with noted musician/producer Todd Rundgren and recorded an original song at Capital Records. Her desired band name, Hydrazine, never happened. Cindy laughingly says, “My counselor, Elliot Easton from The Cars, thought it sounded like something that you put on a cold sore. By democratic vote the band’s name became Lincoln’s Beard, suggested by the drummer, which coincidentally was the only one with a beard. Go figure.” Her rock treatment included hanging with Duff McKagan of Guns N Roses, Rudy Sarza of Quiet Riot, Rami Jaffe of Foo Fighters and dozens more. Her highlight of the camp that turned a dream into a reality, was singing with rock legend Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. “He was so amazing,” said Cindy. “He told the rock campers that it wasn’t about hitting all the notes – it was about feeling and passion and getting that across to people. I took his words to heart and gave it all when we finally went on stage.” Cindy’s newly named band, Lincoln’s Beard, was one of the camp’s bands to perform live at a sold-out audience at the famous rock venue, Whiskey A Go Go. “I think we were probably the third best, my husband said second best, but then he was probably a little biased.” It didn’t matter to her. “It was such a rush performing on stage to an enthusiastic audience, I really was a rock star!’’ - Continued on Page 37

Let’s Go Exploring! Two years ago I wrote a blog entry using the title above. We were on the brink of shooting ST. NICK (my first feature film) and, in addition to the conventional impetus during the transition from December to January, I was feeling particularly inspired, partly because director David Lowery and I had just finished scouting the ranch location where, “along with prospecting the land for great shots, we made friends with the cows, the buffalo, and the horses – particularly an overzealous glass-eyed horse with a propensity for biting.” My response to our visit to the ranch had little to do with moviemaking and more to do with childlike experiences. A renewed spirit had overcome me and this playful mentality seemed to course through the veins of everyone involved with ST. NICK from start to finish. Now, as we enter the second decade of the 21st century, that stimulating sentiment has returned, and I'll set my sights toward newer projects on the horizon. ST. NICK

The year is looking promising already. In late January, I’ll find myself surrounded by snow in Park City, Utah, at the Sundance Film Festival. Founded, in part, by Robert Redford, Sundance has long been the most prestigious independent film festival in the country. When I was in high school, making short films in lieu of doing homework, I dreamed of one day premiering a film at Sundance. This year I've got two films playing there: LOVERS OF HATE (written and directed by Independent Spirit nominee Bryan Poyser) will be making its world premiere in the U.S. Dra-

matic Competition section and Clay Liford’s previously rejected short, MY MOM SMOKES WEED, will be screening in a shorts block program. A dark comedy, surrounding two adult brothers in love with the same woman, LOH relies on deepseated sibling rivalry to LOVERS present HATE OF a convincing tale of deceit. Rudy Lucas is a complete and utter failure at everything. Recently separated from but still in love with his wife Diana, Rudy lives in his car, barely holding on to his job as a door-to-door fact collector for the U.S. Census Bureau. He showers at the car wash or at the homes of unsuspecting home dwellers, constantly bugs his soon-to-be ex-wife, and is all-too-obviously jealous of the success of his older brother Paul. A children's author of fantasy tales in the spirit of the Harry Potter ilk, Paul dedicates every one of his best selling novels to his older brother – his inspiration for the lead character and childhood co-collaborator. Oddly enough, upon watching the film you’ll get a few second’s glance at me playing the only “grownup Paul Lucas fan,” as the author reads a selection from his latest novel. An opportunity arises and Diana decides to visit Paul at a mammoth ski lodge, incidentally located in Park City, while he’s writing a new book. Soon after, Rudy takes a road trip of his own, and, as the intimate moments between Paul and Diana play out, the unexpected visitor silently follows their every move, as he hides in closets and peeks around staircases. Upon discovering the sneaky housemate, tension rises and unexpected events unfold in a climatic, despairing finale. - Continued on Page 37

Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence of the water's natural beauty.

Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venues offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

ARMAND BAYOU NATURE CENTER One of the largest urban wildlife and wilderness preserves in the U.S., Armand Bayou is home to bison, raptors, and reptiles. The Center offers a boardwalk through a woodland-pond area, a bird blind, walking trails, a late 1800s farm site, pontoon boat tours and canoe trips. Three ecosystems with over 2,500 acres of bayou, forest and prairie are refuge for more than 360 species of animals and birds. Reservations required for boat tours and canoe trips. Hours of operation Tue. through Sat. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sun. Noon to 5 p.m. (Last admission at 4:30; gates lock at 5 p.m.) Closed Mondays. The SCENE is the official guide to the Clear Lake, Bay Area and Galveston Entertainment Districts. Look for our special Convention & Visitors Bureau racks in hotels and visitors centers.

Mardi Gras Guide Mardi Gras Galveston • Continued One of the most popular participants of Galveston Island’s annual celebration, the Philadelphia Mummers, will return in full regalia to the pre-Lenten festivities. Dressed in brilliant ornate costumes, the forty-five member group of strings, banjos and horns, will lead off the Mardi Gras festivities and perform during various events. A spectacle not to be missed, their performance is an Island tradition. According to Galveston history, Mardi Gras began in 1867, however following a sabbatical imposed in 1941 by war and challenging times, Mardi Gras! Galveston was revived in 1984. The

largest celebration of its kind in Texas, the event has grown in cultural creativity and imagination, showcasing lavish parades, galas worthy of royalty, original artwork, children’s activities and delicious Gulf Coast cuisine. Still led by prominent Galvestonians and their respective krewes, the grandeur is evident in the dueling parades that range from whimsical daytime processionals to elaborate night parades offering dramatic flair. The streets come to life with parade viewers screaming for beads, lively tunes heard by the colorful marching bands, and the infectious merriment that dominates the Island for two full weeks.

Featured Krewe:

Z Krewe

The Z Krewe Zanies was founded in 1994, when 10 fun seekers gathered to design a uniquely different Mardi Gras - Galveston organization. Following many hours of brain storming and drafting of bylaws, Z Krewe was born. Z was founded with the concept that any member could be the King or Queen; or elected president; that committees would make approved decisions; and that Z Krewe would be rich in Mardi Gras traditions. Since 1994 Z Krewe has grown and is recognized as the Zaniest Mardi Gras Krewe in Galveston, Texas. Z has earned the respect and support of other non-profit organizations such as: Gulf Coast Big Brothers/ Big Sisters and Clean Galveston. The Z Krewe celebrates Mardi Gras by a procession through the Mardi Gras entertainment district. The Zanies parade include horse and mule drawn carriages and wagons in Zanie revelry and music. Z Krewe is joined by the Bay Area Parrotheads. Catch Z best beads in Mardi Gras, specially minted doubloons and trinkets.

I look forward to Cindy Price’s next venture, but meanwhile, In My Humble Opinion is her humorous look at love and everyday life with ups and down with a dose of space travel. It is available at publishamerica.com and most online booksellers. As a public service announcement for those that share this local author’s fantasy, the next Rock-N-Roll Fantasy Camp, www.rockcamp.com is February 23-28 in Los Angeles with Sammy Haggar, Lita Ford and many other rock musicians. It is not your average Girl Scout camp. Pack your studded leather and don’t leave home without the platinum credit card. Southern Star releases Buried Hatchet Stout in cans Just hours before this issue went to press I found myself texting back and forth with my contact at Omni International Beverages. Omni, as loyal readers of the Texas Beer Enthusiast know, is responsible for the distribution of the Conroe-based Craft Brewery Southern Star in the Clear Lake/Bay Area. Lucky for me, my buddy was on the way to Clear Lake and I was about to get my hands on some cans of Southern Star’s Buried Hatchet Stout before it officially reaches market this month (January). The Stout, which has been available on draft in a very limited number of bars including the Flying Saucer in Houston, is among my favorite beers and becomes the third offering from Southern Star (after the Pine Belt Pale and Bombshell Blonde) to be both available year round and launched in cans. This development means a much wider distribution for the strong (ABV: 8.25%) American Stout and I’ve already received word that Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash and Grill will be among the first in the area to serve it. - John Ennis

Good Beer & Austin Music @ Chelsea Wine Bar I had a chance to meet some friends on the night after Christmas at Chelsea Wine Bar in El Lago. The Wine Bar, which is much more than a wine bar, just started a new live music series and is bringing in popular Austin-area musicians to perform, usually as solo acts. On this night the highly regarded Amy Atchley was scheduled to perform. But as a special treat, Atchley brought her entire band with her for the gig. The music was outstanding. I was equally impressed with the beer selection at this “wine bar.” The place has a tap wall that would stand up to almost any in the area. (It should be noted that Chelsea is located next door to Boondoggles Pub and sports a mutual owner.) The tap wall features a number of imports and craft beers and there are many more options in bottles. I started with a Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA. Then I met Chelsea owner John Devereux who bought me a Baltika #9, a tasty Russian beer that an astronaut who patronizes the bar and spent time working in Russia with the Russian Space Agency introduced to Devereux. Many thanks to Mr. Devereux for introducing it to me. – John Ennis

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 51 The local live music SCENE covers so many genres and styles that there's something for everybody – be it rock, folk, new age, country, blues, fusion, surf, soul, bluegrass, alternative, tejano, funk, calypso, jazz, classical, salsa and all the new stuff, too. Happy New Year! -------------------------------------------------------------

ALWAYS GOOD: Three SCENE live music events scored December's good karma kudos: The annual Krewe du Lac Toys for Tots Pub Crawl (bigger and better each year), the Bayview Music Festival Hope for Honduras Fundraiser, and the Benefit for Big Mike. In just these three events alone, we were entertained by the likes of Clinton Ashley, Winter Road, Low Frequency, Michael Shanks, John & Holly Boyle, Wood & Wind, Madigan, Rich & Available, Woodworks, Night Wave, Tom Rogers, the Myrna Sanders band, Robin Kirby and Friends, Andrew Bateman, David Schwope, Scooter Tyra and On Time Airline. The past year, it was difficult to not find a benefit where the music, atmosphere, and causes were top quality. Make it your New Year’s resolution to support these win-win-win events.

RANDOM SHUFFLE: Few things are finer than an enjoyable evening out with friends on the SCENE's live music beat. This month we caught a rare type of gig lead by frontman David Schwope and his Random Shuffle lineup of Danny D (lead & vocals), Mike Bastida Random Shuffle @ T-bone Tom’s (bass), and Peter Sanchez (drums). These strong local scene musicians never played together and never rehearsed yet rocked the house and filled the dance floor so well that the audience never knew. Now is that cool, or what?

Loose Notes by Andy Eng December was busy so let's just get to the nitty gritty, okay? The live music SCENE in 2009 was an excellent year, yes? With all the rebuilding and recovery going on, we witnessed live music providing so many of you readers the entertainment and mojo to press on -- We saw you out there... Thanks to all the club and restaurant venues for hosting live music. We appreciate your friendly settings, your staff's kind hospitality, your yummy munchies, and giving us a place to get away. Props to the organizers and volunteers at the benefits throughout the year, you know who you are. It's no secret that we at The SCENE have a soft spot for benefit shows, where helping others is prime, the musicians play with inspiration, where people support. If you haven't been to a benefit show yet, do try to check out a couple this coming year. It's good medicine. The festivals throughout the year were a blast. From small and friendly neighborhood gatherings on the bay to the large regional gatherings in the park, we were with you enjoying the sights and sounds featuring many of our local musicians along with top national acts too. The open mic gigs around the area are another favorite where we get to hear area musicians test out new ideas, collaborate, form new bands and often before you know it, are out gigging on Madigan @ the beat. New Club & Pub Report Introducing THE DAVENPORT Houston bar opens location in Clear Lake By Carmen Bates Attention Clear Lake: There is a new chill-spot in town, unlike anything we have ever seen in this area. The Davenport opened its doors in mid-November, and is tucked away at 1235 Clear Lake City Blvd., just between Highway 3 and El Camino Real. If the name sounds familiar, that's because they also have a location in upscale Houston. The original is located on Shepherd and Richmond, where owners Duane Bradley and Andy Mitchell have been welcoming customers for 12 years now. This classy martini and scotch bar is all about quality lounging, and they want to invite patrons to indulge in their soothing '50s-feel atmosphere. With cozy couches, trendy decor and even soft candlelight, the hip colors give you a laid-back vibe where you can sip your drink and mingle.

around." Although their main feature is scotch and martini, they offer a selection of bottled beers as well. Their specialties include the Chocolate Martini Tilt a Whirl, which is 3 Olives Chocolate Vodka, Godiva Dark & White Chocolate liqueurs, and a chocolate garnish stick. This impressive concoction won first place for People's Choice Best Martini at the 2000 Texas Restaurant Association Awards. You won't find a smokey sports-bar environment here. This "quality lounge" is the perfect location to bring a date for a romantic evening and have conversation over the light music playing in the background. Or, after work, it's a great destination for gathering with friends and co-workers to relax and enjoy good company. Laptop users: This place has Wi-Fi and easy-access power outlets along the walls and under the bar.

The Davenport offers a full bar. Manager Felipe Pulido elaborated, "We have one of the largest liquor selections

The Davenport is open seven days a week from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. Meet up with friends on Tuesdays for Industry Night, where all industry workers get $1 off everything. Make sure to stop by this month and congratulate them on their new location! For more information on The Davenport, call 281-461-3283. --------------------------------
