CULLEN’S LIVE

JOHN POINTER RETURNS TO CHELSEA I had heard the buzz about John Pointer. I watched the muchhyped YouTube video where the multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger, composer and actor from Austin performs Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir like a full band while utilizing only an acoustic guitar, foot stomps and his beatboxing skills (yes, he beatboxes). I read about the Bachelor of Arts in cello performance and composition, and I knew about the role in Prison Break and his commercials for Chili's Baby Back Ribs and Schlotzsky's Deli. So when he returned to El Lago on a rainy night just before this issue went to press for a performance at Chelsea Wine Bar, I was in. - Continued on Page 42

COVER STORY

Always something special to look forward to at

CHELSEA WINE BAR By JOHN ENNIS

On the coast of El Lago overlooking the tranquil waters where Taylor Lake and Clear Lake meet sits possibly the best kept secret in the Bay Area, Chelsea Wine Bar. Those who know Chelsea, love it. But with a location tucked away and off of the beaten path, Chelsea remains a treasure that more and more people are discovering in recent weeks and months thanks to a growing list of promotions and exclusive live music performances. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable with the hospitality of a wine bar and charm of a European pub with old-world wood, antique accents and hand-painted murals by highly regarded local artist Shelly Shanks. There is an eclectic collection of books and board games to enjoy while listening to the jukebox which features a lineup of music second to none. Enjoy live music on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights ranging from Texas songwriter originals to a diverse blend of jazz, classic rock, big band and Latin tunes. Chelsea features more than 150 hand-selected wines, ports and sherries in stock as well as an impressive collection of Irish cream liqueurs and wide variety of espresso coffees and teas. Homemade sangria is prepared and served daily and the selection of beers in bottles and on draft will not disappoint. Although the kitchen is small, the flavors are not. Try one of the freshly-prepared paninis, mini pizzas, gourmet cheese and meat boards which are perfect to be followed by a delectable dessert. Stop by on Wednesday for homemade pasta, fresh garlic bread and a house red wine for $10 ($7 without the wine). Happy hour is 4 to 7pm and allows patrons $1 off beer and wine, $3 off pitchers and bottles and half price food. Take a visit to Chelsea and let the staff make you feel at home. And as always, tell them The SCENE sent you.

POINT OF DIFFERENCE:

Expanding the waterfront view: As of press time the finishing touches were being added to a brand new two-story deck which will almost double the space upstairs and will offer panoramic views of the water just in time for spring.

Did you know? Although Chelsea has “wine bar” in its name, it also features one of the area’s best selections of beers including 19 import and craft selections on draft and another 60 beer selections in bottles including offers from Brazil, Russia and Singapore among others. Check out the daily $3 draft specials at Chelsea featuring Blue Moon on Monday, Shiner Bock on Tuesday, Guinness on Wednesday, New Castle on Thursday, Fat Tire on Friday, a Saint Arnold selection on Saturday and Mirror Pond Pale Ale on Sunday.

Wednesday Night Texas Songwriter Series Every Wednesday night (8 to 11pm) Chelsea features exclusive live performances from Texas Songwriters you will not find playing anywhere else in the Bay Area. These performers come into town from Austin and bring multi-award winning talent which is a real treat in such an intimate venue. Do yourself a favor and make it out to a show.

10 Years @ Scout Bar

Loose Notes by Andy Eng The music SCENE jumped into high gear this first month of the new year. We got high octane lifts with Scout Bar action at the 10 Year show, the Hunger's New Year’s Eve celebration, and the ever-popular Buzz 94.5 shows each Sunday night. With weather being goofy, we took it indoors with Drivetrain spinning up The Tree House (my favorite neighborhood bar). Back on the beat, we took in Coldshot at Cullen's and over at EJ's was Electricbite, a regional band playing all around and finally hitting the local beat. These cats stay booked waaaaay out in advanced and will be back in February. Clinton Ashley kept the music going at Zone 504 making the place another favorite neighborhood bar of ours. An interesting Sunday Open Mic is up and playing at Al Capone's over in Friendswood. You've heard us rant about their great pizzas and friendly settings from our earlier reports. We checked out this new action catching several sets from the house band led by Craig Reed before singer songwriter Austin Vetaloesco played a few. Best tone award goes to Mighty Mike Taylor's acoustic set. – Continued on Page 48

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 50 We had to peel out early before catching some of the other talent. Keep an eye and ear on this place. According to Ruth, Al Capones will be offering more live music to the Friendswood SCENE. With The Amigos at Katie’s and now this, Sunday night open mics are well set. Mardis Gras is here and that means fun, music and crawfish. Zydeco Joe & the H-Town Players delivered at Heads & Tails. OVER THE TOP for the month goes to Hugh & Jeff's Carwash & Grill for hosting the John Elam benefit held on the nicest weekend of January. Plenty Coldshot At Cullen’s Live of great live music was provided by the Ziggy Moonshine Band, Midnight River Choir, and the John Evans Band. The turnout rivaled IkeFest attendance and the support raised was stellar. Kudos to the organizers and supporters of this well-run family event.

Tickets to the event -- the first official event at Saint Arnold’s new brewery -- sold out in 20 minutes as a thirsty crowd of beer enthusiasts sampled tasty offerings from 30 cooking teams competing for the title of the "Best One-Pot Dish Made With Saint Arnold Beer." SCENE favorites included America’s Stout Mac N’ Cheese (Winter Stout), the Jambalayale (Elissa IPA), Saint Arnie’s Carnie Mac N Cheese (Brown Ale), Round Up Rattle Snake Chili (Amber Ale) and the eventual winner which was Grandma’s Twisted Sweet Potato Pie (Root Beer). Bay Area Brew News & Notes: The small, new distributor that could, Omni International Beverages, is at it again on behalf of the Conroe-based Craft Brewery Southern Star and Bay Area beer drinkers are the winner as a result. Omni enjoyed many “wins” in January, including getting Southern Star’s Bombshell Blonde on the tap wall at Doc’s Upper Deck Sports Bar in Webster, making Doc’s the first Bay Area location with a Southern Star product available via draft. Omni also got Southern Star products in Kemah’s Saltgrass Steakhouse and now you can enjoy the Bombshell Blonde, Pine Belt Pale and the just-releasedin-cans Buried Hatchet Stout at Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash David Le Smith of Omni Beverages and Grill. Matter of fact, the Stout is the featured beer of February. Next time you are up along the Beltway, stop in at the Fox and Hound for a Red Fox Amber, their exclusive signature beer.

John Pointer • From Page 56 The gig didn’t start out as smoothly as he would have liked. This fellow, who once had the Austin City Council declared a day (January 27, 2007) in his honor, pointed to his stack electronic gear and speakers which he battled with during an extended warmup and explained “That is $3000 worth of s#*t that doesn’t want to

work, so I’m going to fool you with technique.” But then the show began and the crowd was sold, technical difficulties and all. Pointer is known for a cross-pollination of genres and the use of standard instruments in non-standard ways. His performances have been described as “part music, part magic, completely connected and impossible to forget.”

42

But on this night, it was hard to ignore Pointer’s voice. One audience member who is a singer/performer in his own right, summed it up best. “Dude sung his ass off!” Yes he did! Pointer will return to Chelsea on March 10 as part of the wine bar’s exclusive Wednesday Night Texas Songwriter Series. Check him out!

You might freak out in a good way! • There WILL be a grieving period. Even though you may have wanted your hair cut forever, you will still mourn the loss of it. Phantom hair will haunt you. All of the sudden everyone in the world has your old hair color. The Day After is the worst. • You WILL have to make changes in the way you style your hair, wear your

make up or wardrobe. Make sure you fully understand these changes by asking your stylist. • You WILL get used to it, and love it. Say thank you when people notice or comment, and be confident in it. If you love it, so will everyone else. Lastly, even if it’s not exactly what you had envisioned, just know that hair is not an exact science, and there may be a small adjustment period with your hair. Sometimes you need to cut a little more here or there, or let the color fade a touch. Just be patient and relish in your power to make change.

Seen by the SCENE: Extreme Makeover - Home Edition in Kemah Art Column • Continued From Page 24 In 2003, she became part of the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” This Los Angeles resident handles her many hats with grace and ease, all while being a full-time mommy to her kids, bringing them on the road while filming the television phenomenon dedicated to rebuilding homes for families in need. Through her involvement with EM:HE, Tracy has witnessed first-hand the dramatic impact that living spaces can have on the lives of the people who occupy them. Every episode stimulates her naturally philanthropic spirit, and she responds to each family’s needs with compassion and enthusiasm. “I believe we should be earth friendly, not only in products, but in repurposing our furniture, buying from flea markets, using handed down antiques and the results will be an eclectic earth friendly design unique to you.” stated Tracy. When asked her favorite power tool, the petite blond said, “Sander!” It is the frequent tool used to change the ‘found treasures’ into newly designed decorator pieces. Cost efficient and trendy, too – can’t beat that. For more information on Tracy’s book, go to www.abrams.books.com. Film Column • Cont. From Pg 23 LOH is a grown-up film and it's a very real film. It doesn't take the easy way out and make “movie characters,” as Bryan puts it, out of the actors. Instead, these actors genuinely feel like real people with real emotions and because of this, the audience sometimes isn't quite sure how to react. All of the screenings were filled with intensity at some moments and boisterous belly-laughing at others. The queasy, uneasy feelings during uncomfortable moments, subsided with the hilarity of the general situation; and the audience played right along. For me, each screening presented the film in a new light and to an ever-changing audience. As stated above, the premiere began in tears and might have ended in tears as well. I know it did for me. And it was the culmination of the film itself the ridiculously amazing performances of actors Alex Karpovsky, Chris Doubek and Heather Kafka and the fact that we were all right here in Park City in the snowy

THE SCENE

cold premiering a film Bryan had only just conceived of two years ago (in Park City, during Sundance 2008) and filmed one year ago (partially in Park City, right after Sundance 2009). For a moment it really hit me hard, as I realized how insanely lucky I truly was to have gotten the opportunity to help this film in its fruition. And I was really here, at Sundance; arguably the second most prestigious film festival in the world second only to Cannes. That's one of those rare feelings I'll cherish for the rest of my life. I regret missing the second screening of LOH; however, I attended the third screening in Salt Lake City and, of the three (out of five) I actually caught, it proved to be my favorite. The great thing about having a screening in Salt Lake City is you're almost guaranteed to have a majority of the house packed with locals just wanting to watch movies. The likelihood of having a great deal of press, industry or other filmmakers is quite slim―mainly, because the drive from Park City to SLC inconveniently requires finding transportation. But when you do get out there, the entire vibe changes. Suddenly, you're no longer in the hustle and bustle of one of the great film events in the world; instead, you're just a guy trying to order a sidecar at a local bar because you have no idea how to order a drink in Utah. A very small group of us went to this particular screening; consisting of me, Bryan and the actors (and a few friends). Bryan introduced the film and we watched the opening sequence and then we hit Johnny's, a local bar serving up enormous plastic mugs full of intensely weak draft beer. The savvy drinker orders a Hops Rising beer in a bottle at 9% alcohol per volume. Because Utah's infamous liquor laws don't apply to bottled beer sold in drinking establishments, the state has several such bottled delights. But the real delight was just hanging out in a total dive, drinking excessive amounts of beer, smack dab in the middle of a city that largely frowns upon alcohol consumption. After guzzling down our spirited libations, we made our way back just in time to catch our film's climactic conclusion. The audience appeared knee-deep in the movie and the majority stuck around for a Q&A that rivals any I've

40

ever attended. Slightly lit, Bryan and the actors took the stage and entertained the audience with anecdotes and witty repartee, encouraging the audience to ask some really wellthought out questions. The actors talked about Bryan's rehearsal and introductory process―an interesting combination of what you might find on the first day of kindergarten or at a retreat sponsored by Alcoholics Anonymous; they mentioned oddball outtakes and noted uniquely phrased improvised dialogue. Laughter ensued as the audience took it all in and the people on stage were obviously just having a really fun time. Chris Doubek, who plays a jaded failure of an elder brother, resentful of everyone around him, noted the real importance of the venue―this wasn't a theatre created for the festival or even an art house; this was a real theatre, packed with real people. You could hear the munching of popcorn and slurping of soft drinks; and there were no expectations. This was pure entertainment. My final screening took place in the famed Eccles Theatre, located in a high school and boasting a 1,300 seating capacity. I'd say we had at least 800 people packed in there – nearly three times the usual screening. Most of the cast and crew, who attended the festival, stayed for the duration of the film. Throughout the screening, I heard roars of laughter and gasps of breath and found myself taking part as I watched the film yet again with a new set of eyes. Hilarious, dark and quirky, LOH is a film I'm intensely proud to be a part of. It's been reviewed by the likes of The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Entertainment Weekly, L.A. Weekly and The New York Times. We've got a long festival road ahead of us; but nothing will be quite like our Sundance experience. Find out more at www.loversofhatethemovie.com. Adam Donaghey is an award-winning film producer from Texas and his website is www.adamdonaghey.com. News Flash: Just as this issue was going to press, The SCENE learned that Lovers Of Hate and two other Donaghey-produced films, Earthling and Audrey the Trainwreck, will be screening at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, next month.

Putting the Ahhh in Kemah It all started with a former UTMB Galveston employee who got laid off following Hurricane Ike. After 20 years with the same company, Melissa Pannel felt compelled to go in a new direction, thus the inception of Aja Nail Spa. “I decided I wanted to do something that makes people happy, helps them look good and relax,” she explained. Aja (pronounced “Asia”) is located in the Kemah Lighthouse District (512 7th Street)

and opened in the fall of 2009. The upscale yet unpretentious decor provides a relaxing atmosphere. Although the outside of the stand alone building looks more like an older home, the inside is newly remodeled and boasts beautiful floors, calming wall colors and modern and comfortable furniture. There is a big screen at the entrance in the waiting area, and a smaller TV to entertain manicure clients. The semi-private Pedispa room, however, is a more tranquil environment from the music to the state-of-the-art spa machines. Waxing services are carried out in a completely private room. Services at Aja include Happy Hand Manicures, nail enhancements, Barefoot Beautiful Spa Pedicures and complete waxing services. Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence of the water's natural beauty.

Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venues offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

ARMAND BAYOU NATURE CENTER One of the largest urban wildlife and wilderness preserves in the U.S., Armand Bayou is home to bison, raptors, and reptiles. The Center offers a boardwalk through a woodland-pond area, a bird blind, walking trails, a late 1800s farm site, pontoon boat tours and canoe trips. Three ecosystems with over 2,500 acres of bayou, forest and prairie are refuge for more than 360 species of animals and birds. Reservations required for boat tours and canoe trips. Hours of operation Tue. through Sat. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sun. Noon to 5 p.m. (Last admission at 4:30; gates lock at 5 p.m.) Closed Mondays. The SCENE is the official guide to the Clear Lake, Bay Area and Galveston Entertainment Districts. Look for our special Convention & Visitors Bureau racks in hotels and visitors centers.

DRASTIC MEASURES

Believe me, I loved the blond hair I sported for 10 years, but I was beginning to get stuck in a Dolly Parton-esque time warp. Sometimes, it’s nice to have an overhaul. When my clients come in considering a drastic change with their hair, it’s so easy for me to stand behind the chair and convince them to go for it. I am not always there to see the consequences of big changes: how they feel during the process and how it changes their outlook on themselves. New haircuts and colors can have a powerful impact on you, and the way you feel about yourself. I often forget about this poignant part of the process – Well… until I did it myself.

I don’t know what happened to me. I arrived at work one day and simply asked my co-worker to color my hair brown. I picked his chin up off the floor and tried to dissuade his disbelief by smiling largely. I told him to leave me some highlights and make the rest a rich dark brown. I was numb to it. As he placed the color on each section of hair, I felt nothing. I didn’t know what was to come. When it came time to rinse everyone stood around the bowl and poked and prodded my hair. As I was blow-drying, I thought, “Well this is what you wanted, and it’s going to be grand.” Afterwards my co-workers stood staring at me in shock and horror. I had dark brown – almost black – hair.

My first thought was, “Hmmm.” My second was “holy S*&%!” It was done, and I just stared. I did not recognize myself and almost thought maybe it would be gone tomorrow. I caught glimpses of myself in the salon mirrors and was fascinated. I peeked around corners, shook my hair and wondered what everyone would say. As I went to bed that night I forgot about the day’s events and drifted off to sleep. The next morning I popped out of bed only to nearly scream when I saw myself in the mirror! I had a panic rise in my stomach, and I almost shed tears. What have I done?! It was still there. I analyzed it, wished I had done something different: maybe a different shade or rinsed it sooner. The blond was all gone. By about the second shampoo, the color had set in so nicely, and it was beginning to grow on me. I felt different. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I felt empowered to have made a big decision to change my image. I love the way my clothes now contrast next to the dark hair. It was fun to change my makeup and go from the golds I used to wear to pinks and purples. People noticed that my eyes “pop” a little more. I loved hearing what people had to say. My favorite comment was, “Wow! It looks better!.” I love it now! I took a risk, and it was awesome, powerful and motivating.

FEBRUARY 2010

“EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION” DESIGNER TRACY HUTSON ADDS AUTHOR TO HER BIO I, like many thousands had the opportunity to work on the home for the Beach family in Kemah, through ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” But I did feel an extra sense of pride to be a part of the lead committee team that started right after Thanksgiving and continued through December when the secret was still kept in, with the Lock & Key Production, aka: EM:HE staff. We worked side by side with the ABC family undercover with Blu Shield’s staff and beloved family, contractors, trade partners, and sponsors. Barbara Roberts and I worked with Dustin Pullum and his team from ABC’s EM:HE out of make-shift offices at South Shore Harbour Resort side by side daily, with locals Chiquita Taylor, Eddy Harper, Laurie Dotson, Mary Dees and Kim Woodard. It was a long-kept secret with long hours, while watching others keep even longer hours day after day. Through my eyes, it was like watching a symphony in motion, while all where achieving the goals to have the overwhelming job of having all the many components in place by the time the Braveheart march was implemented. (The Braveheart march is when the show’s blue shirted volunteers walk behind Ty and his team to surprise the heroic family that they had picked for the home makeover.) By January 7, so many of us had bonded by the time we got to the actual home building week. I realized I can keep a big secret, even after six weeks when speculation was out, and it was near the point of “hiding out” to make sure the secret was kept. We did all enjoy our secret codes, and our correspondence being dubbed 719, (the episode number). Additionally, we all were on a high spirit of volunteerism while covering our job demands. We made some good friends, not just the typical, “look at me with a celebrity”

THE SCENE

Sure, heartthrob Ty Pennington is the top celebrity of EM:HE and all adore him, but along with Ty are the down-to-earth design team, Michael Maloney, Paul DiMeo and the adorable Tracy Hutson. They make the show sparkle with talent. But the Hollywood cast knows it is the multitude of volunteers, sponsors and trade partners that make their designs for the home become a reality. After we moved our temp offices from South Shore to the buildsite in Kemah, we all experienced the coldest winter weather ever on the coast, (or at least in several decades) but the cold and the rain never seemed to slow the incredible masses of people. My personal interest has always been the design team, and designer Tracy Hutson was a real pleasure to meet, but also to visit with during the week she was here. Anyone who watches the Sunday night ABC show knows that Tracy works with the team on the design of each special home. I enjoyed talking to Tracy about her children and husband and her new book. By the time our wrap party came, we got to do some decompressing at T-Bone Tom’s. We shared an experience that we will always remember. The spirit of volunteerism was the highest level noted in the Clear Lake / Bay Area, and I know it will continue – the bar was set high, and it was met. While the end was near during the emotional chants of

I want to thank all the people who worked with me and volunteered graciously, giving not only their time, but a true devotion to this project.

photo but really got to know them in an “unHollywood” setting. When you work daily (in rain or freezing weather, it adds another layer of bonding) day after day, conquering obstacles, seeking their wisdom on their past experiences, all while sharing a few tears with a lot of laughter, it makes an unforgettable experience.

------------------------------Tracy Hutson is an accomplished interior designer, a devoted mother and the author of a charming and informative book on how to decorate the perfect space for your child. “Feathering the Nest: Tracy Hutson’s Earth Friendly Guide to Decorating Your Baby’s Room” ($29.95) is an easy-to-use resource for parents who want to create a nursery that is both mentally stimulating and emotionally comforting, that maximizes safety and that is built and decorated with environmental responsibility. In this book, Hutson shares her specialty and her passion for designing children’s spaces, putting her guiding principles into practice for four styles of nurseries: vintage, contemporary, traditional and international. See photos of actual children’s rooms from around the country and descriptions on how the rooms were made; the book also focuses on the essential components of nursery design, including the special touches that make a room your child’s very own. With Feathering the Nest, the warmth and creativity of Tracy Hutson’s approach will inspire parents to create the ideal nest for their child. The book is beautifully illustrated with photography by Laurie Frankel. Tracy began her professional career as a stylist and designer in 1999, when she started her own Los Angles-based design business. - Continued on Page 40

Former club owners embark on new Kemah endeavor Two old crabby club owners, Alan Franks (formerly of The Seabrook Beach Club) and Paul Latour (of Junction Night Club) are working on a new project in Kemah together. This new endeavor will actually be two separate businesses; the first is a local seafood market. Alan’s Seafood Market will feature fresh and frozen seafood such as shrimp, crawfish, oysters, fish, crabs, lobster and a vast array of species in every size. There will be a variety of services available, including live bait for fishermen; a drive-thru window for pick-up orders; cooked crawfish to go; and event catering that includes crawfish and shrimp boils. With easy accessibility from Highway 146, the bright blue building can be found on the east side of Kemah bridge next to Molly’s and Ichibon’s near the Kemah Boardwalk Marina.

THE SCENE

The second business will be a Cajun boil house restaurant. The general concept is “Crazy Al’s Swamp Shack.” This restaurant will specialize in Cajun boiled crawfish, shrimp, crabs and lobster. Other specialty menu items will be gumbo, jumbo fried shrimp, raw oysters, baked oysters and much more. The kids will have their own menu and play area so that the adults can relax. The roof top deck overlooking the marina will surely be a favorite hang out. Alan said he would describe the decor as “something like an old rustic shack in the Louisiana swamp.” He explained, “It will be the hole-in-the wall kind of place where you can let your hair down and have some fun at a reasonable price.” For more information about Alan’s seafood market, call 281334-1445.

Wine & Wishes at Perry’s Steakhouse

The Bay Area Chi Omega Alumnae Chapter hosted its 4th Annual Wine & Wishes in January at Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille. The community full-heartedly supported Make-A-Wish Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana Chapter producing the most successful year ever with the culinary adventure raising more than $63,000 to grant 10 children’s wishes from this area. The 2010 financial gifts surpassed last year’s total by more than $10,000. Four of the fulfilled wishes will be for Ana D. (age 5) to meet the cast of iCarly, Hannah H. (age 5) to go on a Disney Cruise, and Noah L. (age 5) and Hunter H., (age 4) to go to Walt Disney World Resort. The atmosphere was energetic with the help from The Megatones (a five-piece blues band) and auctioneer and emcee Phil Pampolina. Guests were served a five-course wine dinner and enjoyed a live auction, big board auction, raffle and door prize drawings. Co-chairs Holly Perry and Wendy Shaw introduced the attendance of parents and grandparents of Abby O., whose

I apprenticed under classical French Chef Bonetti at Hemingway’s in Missouri. (Chef Bonetti was a private chef for Hugh Hefner for several years.) I rose to the level of Sous Chef at Hemingway’s, and then served as chapter president for the American Culinary Federation in Springfield. My first executive chef job was at the Sheraton in Minetonka, Minnesota. I have spent the last four years as executive chef at the Hilton Nasa Clear Lake and the Luna Restaurant. Specialty: Regional modern fusion: Taking local favorites and infusing with flavors from my French, Cajun and Pacific Rim training; thus, making my food familiar, but distinctive to the local community. Signature Dish: Infusion of East meets West Coconut Chicken Salad. (Shown above.) T-bone Tom’s, great food, great times & world famous Armadillo Eggs By Carmen Bates

in the kitchen. Other must-try items include their jumbo fried shrimp and homemade applepecan bread pudding. Also available for catering, you can call 281-334-2133 for additional information.

Located at 707 Hwy. 146 in Kemah, Bay Area hot spot Tbone Tom's is now hotter than ever! Combining home-style food with a laid-back atmosphere and friendly staff, T-bone's has the recipe for success.

On November 24, 2009 – exactly a year and one day after their re-opening postHurricane Ike – this eatery was featured on The Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives with Guy Fieri. "

Since first opening in the '60s as the Kemah Meat Market, T-bone Tom's has grown over the years and is now both a national and local favorite. Long-time General Manager Anna Kennedy knows all about T-bone Tom's rich history. The original owner Leonard Fitzmorris handed down the business to his son, Tom, for whom the restaurant is named. "We like to think that Tom is smiling down on this restaurant from up in heaven," said Kennedy, because they now have more customers than ever before.

"People from all over the country have stopped in to eat and told us they saw the show," said Kennedy. The three featured menu items were marinated rib-eye, homemade sausage and armadillo eggs.

This month, current owners Barry and Melissa Terrell are celebrating their 11th anniversary of ownership, and believe that it is all about serving the best quality food possible. "Hands-down, our Chicken Fried Steak is a customer favorite," said Kennedy. Patrons can find lunch and dinner specials Monday through Friday which include home-style cooking and recipes made from scratch daily

The customer base is not the only thing that has grown over the past 35 years. Kennedy explained that their building itself has expanded as well. It is now twice the size it once was as a meat market, and there is also the additional outdoor patio known as "Tom's Backyard." Customers can enjoy their food and the weather under the largest palapa in Texas, while relaxing and listening to live bands Wednesday through Sunday evenings starting in March and running through October. - Continued on Next Page

Eiland was presented The Quasar Award, which is given each year to an outstanding individual who has contributed greatly to the economic wealth and diversity of the Bay Area Houston region. The selection of Eiland was in acknowledgment of his steadfast leadership in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike and in appreciation of his legislative accomplishments in championing the restoration of one of the region’s greatest resources, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
